Created multiple written summaries, presentations, and documents to further the development of a potential $4.2 Billion dollar renovation of the University of Chicago’s Main Quadrangles (“Quad Capital Renewal”). Drafted documents concerning the proposal of the Frank Lloyd Wright Robie House as a UNESCO world heritage site; these documents were used to make final decisions about the recommended buffer zone for the site. Compiled a report addressing the National Park Service Reconnaissance Survey for the Pullman Historic District and its potential effects on the University of Chicago Press Buildings within its boundaries. Created maps and graphics used as references for major projects: these include an official map of campus buildings by age, and maps that showed existing emergency lights and potential sensor locations for a citywide data-gathering project (called the Array of Things). Created architectural drawings of a potential underground parking structure above proposed geothermal energy pump on the Midway.

Since I began my studies of architecture this year, I have consistently approached design problems in systematic ways, creating intricate and logical forms that have challenged me to constantly enhance my skills. While my work is in its nascent stage, it is a culmination of a years-long career studying architecture from a historical and cultural viewpoint. This portfolio acts as witness to my continuously evolving relationship with design.

14th Street Lost and Found Core I project, Fall 2016 Critic: Alfie Koetter Duration: 3 Weeks
In an unprecedented move, the MTA has joined forces with an oracular cult in order to restore lost belongings to their rightful owners. The space of the resulting Lost and Found has been divided into two domains: storage and circulation, leading the 14th Street MTA station, and the interstitial space, given to the program needed by the cult.

Impacted Vertical Park Core I project, Fall 2016 Critic: Alfie Koetter Duration: 1.5 Weeks
The geometries of Stuyvesant Town's building and park plans press into the structure of one of its corner buildings, creating a vertical park that breaks down the seemingly impenetrable barrier of the complex. The preexisting infrastructure--including its vertical circulation--remain vital parts of this new arrangement. As a result, both the residents of Stuyvesant Town and the nearby community at large have access to the parks of this historically off-limits space.

Alluvial Bridge Core I project, Fall 2016 Critic: Alfie Koetter Duration: 3.5 Weeks
The Alluvial Bridge, taking its form from the basic three processes of alluvial flow, spans the East River from midtown Manhattan to Brooklyn. The bridge itself acts as an installation space for large-scale, site-specific works of art, and activates an industrial part of Manhattan for public use. Align

Interpolated House GSD Career Discovery, Summer 2015 Critic: Marshall Ford Duration: 1 Week
This home is a living space for two parties: a single-parent household and a lone male. The home exists as a buffer between their daily routines; they can sense each other and hear each other, but live separate lives. The shapes present on the roof—two squares, a circle, and a rounded triangle, expand, cut, raise, and drop through the floors, forming furnitures and structures that catalyze the interior.

Inflate-a-House Core I project, Fall 2016 Critic: Alfie Koetter Duration: 1 Week
This device was inspired by historical experiments with inflatables by mid-20th Century architects. Its mass was initially compacted inside of the metal cylinder, where it descended to the bottom of the pool and the Alka-Seltzer inside of it began to react with the water, inflating it and bringing it to the surface.

Light Studies Core II project, Spring 2017 Critic: Karla Rothstein Duration: 3 Weeks
Above: The images above were meant to represent a the architectural light qualities of a civic sanctuary, mapped and spatially inverted in order to understand the light’s depth. Right: These diagrams represent the light over time of multiple materials, one which dissipates (top, wax) and one which maintains its structure (bottom, hot glue attached to acrylic). 21

Theses
Returning to Not Knowing: Surealism in the Open City of Ritoque, Chile Recipient of the Summer International Travel Grant for thesis research Thesis chosen to present at the Chicago Area Undergraduate Research Forum
My thesis, submitted for consideration within both the Art History and Latin American Studies departments at the University of Chicago, analyzes the pedagogy and aesthetic history of an experimental architecture site in central Chile. This site, created and run by professors and students of the Architecture School of the University of ValparaĂso, drew heavily from surrealist thought and nationalist poetry in order to create forms independent of established Chilean contruction methods. By rethinking the way that architecture relates to both those who inhabit it and the particularities of the land it occupies they were able to realize structures that offered “a repeatable process of experiencing and representing space that is other than rational, yet grounded in individual subjectivity.â€? This process, and the form of the buildings informed by that line of questioning, allow visitors to substantate their perception by allowing two versions of reality to coexist: the permanent and the impermantent, the contextual and the separate, the communal and the individual. My argument concludes with an assertion that the work of this school and its associated method has been instrumental in the development of modern architectural thought in Chile. 23
The Application of Religious Philosophy in a Modern Hong Kong Church: An Analysis of Form in Johannes Prip-Møller’s Design for Tao Fong Shan Recipient of the Dean's Research Grant
My master’s thesis, written within the History and Archaeology concentration at Peking Univeristy in Beijing, China, concerns the architecture of Danish Christian missionary Johannes Prip-Møller and its adaptation of Chinese Buddhist monastic architecture. Prip-Møller’s greatest work, Tao Fong Shan church in Hong Kong, blends modern international technology with a pared-down version of Chinese traditional architecture, drawing on his encyclopedic knowledge of Chinese architectural form. Through an art historical analysis of the church, I was able to discern the formal origins of many of the individual parts of the church and make a case that the church is a rare third typology of structure in China that is neither international nor national; instead, Tao Fong Shan represents a hybrid style that depends on information from both cultures in order to function. 24
Representation
The following images were created in an intensive semester-long course called Architectural Drawing and Representation. Starting from very little knowledge of the suite of digital architectural tools, I was taught in a few short weeks to produce technical and meaningful representational images. Both of the drawings shown here are of Giuseppi Terragni’s unbuilt 1942 monument to the reign of Mussolini, patriotically named the Danteum. 25
In the image above, I attempted to recreate the internal light conditions of this building via an unrolled section, made all the more difficult because the building was never constructed. True to Terragni’s vision, I was faithful to the materials that he chose for his Danteum. Through this representation, one can more clearly understand the depth of shadows and the intensity of natural light that the structure would possess.
26
The image at right is meant to contextualize the Danteum: in popular representation, the building is often shown divorced from its surroundings. However, in its intended spot across the road from the Roman Forum, one can immediately recognize the influence of the surrounding architectural form and layout. 27

During the year I spent as an intern in the Department of Planning and Design within Facilities Services, I was able to both grow my architectural skill set and participate in dynamic, multi-million dollar projects that were not only influential in the present but had the potential to affect generations. The major projects I was involved in were: (1) The Array of Things, an environemental data collection project led by the City of Chicago in conjunction with the School of the Art Institute (SAIC) and the University of Chicago. 10-15 locations were chosen to site the sensors on campus. (Images at right) (2) I created multiple written summaries, presentations, and documents to further the development of a potential $4.2 billion dollar renovation of the University of Chicago’s Main Quadrangles. (3) I drafted documents concerning the proposal of the Frank Lloyd Wright Robie House as a UNESCO World Heritage Site; these documents were used to make final decisions about the recommended buffer zone for the site. (4) I created a standard example accessibility layout in order to create a unified language for architects working for UChicago to imitate in their maps.
