the houston music museum’s site presents an interesting opportunity within the city. being one of the largest cities in the nation, it has a rich culture that deserves more recognition. along with that evolving culture are the ones that we are surrounded by everyday; business, leisure, and what takes us between the two, the car. downtown houston has a push for taking the city away from the cars, and back to the pedestrian leading to more parks and paths to make the city more pleasant than a sea of parking lots.

the site sits between the juncture point of houston where you can experience businesses crossing with consumers, with the fine arts district to the left and the highways that houston is known for straight ahead. instead of giving houston a museum celebrating it’s heritage with a typical building seen downtown, the design was a complete reaction to the city, while giving back to the pedestrian. creating a park in the middle of the site, rather than giving it back to parking allows for another green space that the city currently lack, bring people together of the city much like music does for us everyday.

viso fall 3rd year: intermediate studio energy corridor houston, texas professor matthew johnson focus: sustainable design

20 energy exploratorium

the primary concern was to create an educational facilities for the energy corridor which addresses and examines the present and future of energy use. by orienting the building towards the main contributer to the energy industry, ConocoPhillips and by orienting the STAIRS that extend from the site into the building to serve as a BRIDGE to better understanding and enlightenment. viso is to be a VISION for a more sustainable future in the heart of the energy corridor, where both industry and community can build together.
