A LESSON IN GEOGRAPHY

Jamaica is an island found just 90 miles southwest of Cuba and Haiti, in the Caribbean. The geographical alignment of the island is latitude 18o15’ N, and longitude of 77o30’ W. From Denver, Colorado, Jamaica is about 2222 miles.

AN OVERVIEW OF JAMAICA

Jamaica provided an interesting challenge, namely because the nation has been controlled by so many other countries. They are a nation steeped in politics and strife, but have emerged a proud, incredibly diverse people that emphasize unity and love. Jamaica is also an incredibly vibrant place full of life, despite the struggle, and we wanted to capture that in our design work.

Vacationers relax on one of Jamaica’s many beaches. The island strongly relies on the tourism industry as a source of income.

THE NATIONAL MOTTO

“Out of many, one people. Because of the many years Jamaica spent under the rule of other countries--namely England, beneath which it is still a commonwealth, it has become a very diverse nation. The people of Jamaica put a strong emphasis on unity, and come together in the belief that they are all Jamaican.

Inity [in ∙ i ∙ tee] -noun origin: Jamaican Patois 1. the quality or state of being unified

“We mind-mapped words and ideas that came to mind as we thought about Jamaica. As we focused on the mission statement, one word came to mind-unity. Not wanting to use this word, we began mind-mapping the word unity. While looking up Jamaican Patois(slang), I found a word commonly used-inity. Meaning “unity” we immediately said it out loud and felt like it was the perfect match.” - Erin

We wanted to stick with the theme of using words from the Jamaican Patois language when naming our retail space. When we came across “braata”, it encompassed everything we wanted the retail name to stand for. Good will, a little extra something to keep customers happy and to keep them coming back.

After we settled on the word inity, we decided that we preferred all lowercase because of the unity with the i’s in it, and it should be a sanserif typeface because the word had a very soft feel to it.

We decided that Kabel was going to be the typeface to represent Inity, but just choosing and writing the name out in the typeface wasn’t enough. We had to test out various type weights (thickness), as well as make a final decision as to whether or not we wanted to capitalize the “i” in Inity. And if not, what would be the rules when we were designing things like books? Would it be referred to in upper case except when used in the logo? We had a lot to think about when it came to our type.

Inity | Word Marks 17

WORD MARK

THE FIRST WORD MARK This is the first word mark we produced that was intended to work with the logo in a final mark. But the typeface Kabel didn’t work in all aspects here. All letters but the ‘y’ are very softly curved with angled edges. The ‘y’ has a sharp junction where the two lines meet and is stiff--there is no movement here. We wanted our word mark to dance, to jive, to have a beat, like a Jamaican drum. So we set out to make some changes.

Kristen Manning

Susan Lefever

Inity | Word Marks 18

WORD MARK

“FIXING” KABEL

The major changes that went into making our final mark dealt with making the ‘y’ more round. To do that we took the ‘n’ and turned it upside down. The decender was hand drawn and the lowest curve was taken from the bottom of the ‘t’. We wanted it to look as if it’s always been there, so we took from what we already had as far as shapes went. The circles on the ‘i’ were made slightly larger, and the crossbar on the ‘t’ was extended to make it more balanced.

A l i c i a R a u s ch

Angelique Charles

Erin Shimamoto

Kristen Manning

Susan Lefever

There was a very exact process that went into making the decender on the ‘y’. As shown above, a circle with a diameter the thickness of the lines in the typeface was moved down the curve so that the parts we were building would stay consistent with the rest of the typeface already present.

Inity | Word Marks 19

WORD MARK

THE FINAL WORD MARK

Our final word mark really embodies what we wanted our restaurant to look and sound like. It’s angled edges give the illusion of dancing, and it has a good balance of solid, hard line, and soft curves, just like when you say ‘Inity’ aloud.

FIRST LOGO

The first logo we really finalized was very rectangular, and the ‘rising sun’ cur ve was very low and closed off. We decided we wanted to open up the spacing quite a bit so that when we combined it with the word mark, it would be an easier fit. The cur ves also needed to be smoothed out.

Chicken Man

Chicken Man Part of the main attraction when customers come into the space, the “chicken man” greets all customers in the entry hall. The “chicken man” is a chef from Jamaica who is able to make a smile on any customer entering while making them feel welcome. His main responsibility is to cook the jerk chicken that is one of the main dishes on the menu. One of the main features within the restaurant is the open kitchen. Customers coming into the space or waiting for their table can watch the “chicken man” cook or can watch some of what is going on through the kitchen through the Lumicor. Designed with a flavor of Jamaica, this space gives the customer a view into what is to come throughout the rest of the restaurant.

Part of the Jamaican culture, the bar is designed to bring togetherness within the community and allow people to feel comfortable together. Since thatching and dark wood is often used throughout Jamaican spaces, these materials were also used to honor the culture. Since sustainability was a concern for the client, every material used within this space was selected with this in mind. The existing brick was cleaned with non toxic bleach. In order to reuse materials existing within the space, the existing flooring is brought up. The wood was then sanded, cleaned and refinished off site to eliminate dust and then used for the drink ledges and tables. The paint used on the walls is a no VOC, low odor paint from Benjamin Moore. The countertop is made from recycled glass and recycled concrete, Cradle to Cradle and LEED CI certified from Ice Stone. The flooring from Forbo is Smart Certified along with LEED CI/NC/EB certified. The hatching used on the umbrella comes from Synthatch that is a synthetic material that will not fade or shed and is ASTM E108 Class A and B certified.

Leading from the bar, the dining room provides a private space for diners to eat. The large window located to the back of the dining room leads the eye to the back of the restaurant and the porch to the back. Allowing diners to see the party experience in the back gives them other spaces to want to experience in returning to the restaurant. Since green, blue and yellow colors are often seen within Jamaica, these colors are incorporated in muted tones to highlight the culture throughout the space but create a quiet space for diners to enjoy the food of the culture as well. Equalizing the focal point of the window, the ceiling creates additional visual interst by leading the viewers eyes to other spaces within the restaurant and ties those spaces together, unifying the restaurant as a whole. The logo is incorporated within the space as well within the circulation winding patterns in between each table. Just as with the bar, the existing brick is kept.

Back Patio

On warm afternoons and evenings, you can relax on the back patio in one of our hammock chairs. Invented in Jamaica, the hammock communicates a fun, relaxed escape from the everyday. The logo design is incorporated into the wall behind our outdoor bar. The floor is textured to resemble sand to bring back memories of the beach. We have taken advantage of the space behind the restaurant to make a new, must see spot.

Inity Retail

Inity’s retail store sells a variety of edible items from Jamaica, supporting their local agriculture. We have a variety of rums and beers, as well as Inity branded herbs, spices, and coffee. The retail space flows in a curved pattern that emphasizes the length of the building. The drop ceiling over the cash wrap and the hanging canopies reinforces the spaces curves. Colorful custom pendants hang over the small tasting area. another custom fixture shines through the Inity logo.

The cash wrap and tasting bar are made from the reclaimed floor wood, and give the space a warm feeling. No VOC, low odor Benjamin Moore paint is used on the walls and marmoleum is used for flooring throughout. Fabrics from Maharam have reduced environmental impact, are free of heavy metal dyes and have 100% recycled, natural fiber content. Armstrong’s canopy ceilings are made locally, are highly durable, and help to reduce noice in the space.
