Who doesn’t love a tall glass of lemonade in the summer? Liven up a summer classic with a fan-favorite recipe for sparkling blueberry lemonade. This crisp, refreshing drink will have your taste buds tingling in delight. INGREDIENTS • 2/3 cup white sugar (superfine is best) • 2/3 cup water • 1 1/2 cups fresh blueberries • 1 teaspoon lemon zest • 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (~4-5 whole, large lemons) • 2 cups ice cubes • 3 cups sparkling water or club soda (my favorite is sparkling lemon-lime water) INSTRUCTIONS 1. Combine the sugar, water, blueberries, and lemon zest in a saucepan. 2. Bring to a boil over medium heat, simmer for 5-10 minutes, or until the sugar is melted and blueberries are starting to burst. 3. Remove from the heat, and pass through a fine sieve. Let the blueberry syrup completely cool. 4. Meanwhile, juice the lemons to get 1 cup lemon juice. 5. In a large pitcher, add the blueberry syrup, lemon juice, and ice. Stir together. 6. Stir in the sparkling water or club soda RIGHT before enjoying (don’t add sparkling water/club soda to anything you plan on having leftover) 7. Enjoy immediately.

Toscana Lifestyle A WORD FROM THE LIFESTYLE DIRECTOR

By Mark Gatchell, Lifestyle Director shop in their unique storefronts. Lunch will be included Chill Out with Our on this cool getaway. Summer Events We’re sizzlin’ through summer! July was a fun-filled month here at Toscana, and I want to thank everyone who braved the sun to come and join us at our events! The summer heat can be a strong motivator to keep you indoors and away from our Fun Friday Social or other events. I know I want to turn right back around to the comfort of my air conditioning when I step one foot outside! That being said, many residents register for events, but plans change or the temperature is just too high to open the door, and they end up no-showing. If you are unable to make an event you registered for, it is essential to let me know you won’t be coming. This can be as simple as a call or email, or you can always drop by the office during business hours, if you’re in the area! We often times have a wait list for our more popular events or have catering based on the number of registered participants. Informing me if you aren’t (or are!) coming in advance helps us better plan the budget and reduce spending and food waste.

Game on! Got a competitive streak? Don’t miss out on two popular Toscana staples, Trivia Night and Game Day! Whether you’re the King of Monopoly or a Trivia Wizard, you’re invited to join your fellow residents to test your prowess. Will you hold the “Big Brain” award at the end of the night? Or will you be left saying Sorry! to your teammates. See the events page for more details on these events. Whether you’re sticking out the heat (and sticking to your car seats) here in Phoenix, or staying far away from the sun, don’t forget to put on your sunblock and stay hydrated this summer! We can’t wait for those cooler month when we see more of your smiling faces. As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions on upcoming events or would like to rent out one of our amenity spaces.

Spotlight On... CINEMA: MOVIE REVIEW By Gil Berkowitz Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood Tarantino’s Bold Pop-Culture Look at Hippy Hollywood

This movie is full of classic high jinks; it’s a playfully funny/ violent romp on movies that only Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time In...Hollywood” can get away with. It blends fact and fiction, with made up characters at the heart of the real, and horrible, Charles Manson history, tied into a love letter to Los Angeles and the film industry. It’s a wonderful tongue-in-cheek spoof of Hollywood. The film begins in August of 1969, where it leads us to the story of Rick and Cliff before finishing off with a dazzling twist on the Manson massacre. Non-fictional characters pop up throughout like the doomed Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) and Nixon-era celebrities, Steve McQueen (Damian Lewis) and Bruce Lee (Michael Moh), but at the heart of the movie is a friendship that is pure fiction. Leonardo DiCaprio is Rick Dalton, and Brad Pitt is Cliff Booth. Rick is the over-the-hill cowboy star trying to hang on by playing bad-guy roles. He is overly-emotional and hard-drinking. His finances are just about depleted and the only thing he has is his

Toscana Living | 10

mansion home, next door to Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski. His buddy Cliff is his stunt-man, go-fer, and his livelihood depends on Rick’s success. He is a violent man with a dark side, but his redeeming qualities are enough that you still find yourself rooting for him. There is a frolicking scene where he challenges Bruce Lee to a fight. The co-leads are excellent together, great conversational flow and spark. DiCaprio thrives as an aging star caught in the midst of the changing times, trying to survive, and Pitt is outstanding as a man facing reality with confidence and swagger. They actually remind you of John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction. The mood of the film is gleeful and tongue-incheek like the two friends cruising Sunset Boulevard, knowing that the Los Angeles they knew is ending and they are somewhat lost. The film is playing a Harkins Theaters throughout the valley and is rated R for violence, sexuality and language. It runs for 2 hours and 40 minutes.

COMMUNITY HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Focus: Avoiding Heat Stroke Information retrieved from https://www.mayoclinic. org/diseases-conditions/heat-stroke/symptomscauses/syc-20353581 HEAT STROKE PREVENTION

Heatstroke is predictable and preventable. Take these steps to prevent heatstroke during hot weather: Wear loosefitting, lightweight clothing. Wearing excess clothing or clothing that fits tightly won’t allow your body to cool properly. • Protect against sunburn. Sunburn affects your body’s ability to cool itself, so protect yourself outdoors with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Apply sunscreen generously, and reapply every two hours — or more often if you’re swimming or sweating. • Drink plenty of fluids. Staying hydrated will help your body sweat and maintain a normal body temperature. • Take extra precautions with certain medications. Be on the lookout for heat-related problems if you take medications that can affect your body’s ability to stay hydrated and dissipate heat.

cool spot. Try to schedule exercise or physical labor for cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or evening. • Get acclimated. Limit time spent working or exercising in heat until you’re conditioned to it. People who are not used to hot weather are especially susceptible to heat-related illness. It can take several weeks for your body to adjust to hot weather. • Be cautious if you’re at increased risk. If you take medications or have a condition that increases your risk of heat-related problems, avoid the heat and act quickly if you notice symptoms of overheating. If you participate in a strenuous sporting event or activity in hot weather, make sure there are medical services available in case of a heat emergency.

WHY NOT

TONIGHT?

• Never leave anyone in a parked car. This is a common cause of heat-related deaths in children. When parked in the sun, the temperature in your car can rise 20 degrees F (more than 6.7 C) in 10 minutes. • It’s not safe to leave a person in a parked car in warm or hot weather, even if the windows are cracked or the car is in shade. When your car is parked, keep it locked to prevent a child from getting inside. • Take it easy during the hottest parts of the day. If you can’t avoid strenuous activity in hot weather, drink fluids and rest frequently in a

The last item on your monsoon checklist is helping us keep Toscana beautiful. After a storm, if you notice any broken branches or damaged property, make sure to let the office know immediately. Do not assume we already know, we would rather get 100 phone calls telling us something isn’t looking right than one phone call a week later from an upset resident because something didn’t get cleaned up. With over 1000 residents on property, you are likely to see something before we do, even with our regular inspections. We want to fix things as soon as possible, and part of that is being aware there is an issue! As a reminder, there are multiple ways you can report an issue around property. If you see something looking amiss, please feel free too: drop by the office, give us a call at 480-585-0808, shoot any member of the office team an email, or fill out a maintenance request form on our website! Well, that’s all I have for now, stay safe and enjoy the rain, and lightening shows.
