If you want to go old school you can try the “Egyptian” method of sleeping under a damp towel or sheet. The evaporation of the cloth’s water will keep you cool all night, and the sheet or towel will most likely be dry by morning. This method was widely used by the Egyptians for over 500 years. CINEMA: MOVIE REVIEW By Gil Berkowitz Hotel Mumbai Raw, Unrelenting Look at Terrorism “Hotel Mumbai” is an intense, gasping thriller about the insanity of terror. The film is a disturbing and unnerving experience that should shaken the most hardened viewer. Australian Director Anthony Maras tells the story of the co-ordinated attack in Mumbai, India by a terrorist cell throughout the populous city across several locations. This is a true account of the November 2008 attacks that shook Mumbai and left more than 170 people dead. The major attack targeted the luxurious Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and the over 1000 foreigners and local guests. The events unfold through the eyes of the hotel staff, its guests, local law enforcement and the terrorists as well. It is a complicated story of heroism, horror and mass confusion. It all begins with the terrorists initiating the attacks in a railway station, working their way through the streets of Mumbai, being
Toscana Living | 10
guided by an unknown voice at the end of a phone call. The chaos begins when four heavily armed men storm into the lobby of the hotel and in a cavalier manner begin to massacre innocent people. It is a gut wrenching scene. Dev Patel plays a waiter and Sikh named Arjun. He is preparing to work and attend to the guests in the hotel restaurant when the attack begins. Also, in the dining room is a biracial couple, Zahra (Nazanin Boniadi) and her American husband David (Armie Hammer) and a Russian industrialist Vasisli (Jason Isaacs). One of the characters is based on a real life person Oberoi (Anupam Kher), the hotel’s legendary and highly respected chef. He and Arjun choose to stay behind and help all of the guests to try and escape through a back entrance. This film is not to be seen as entertainment but as a visceral experience revealing how horrible and inhumane these attacks are and the crime that is terrorism. The movie is playing at Harkins theaters throughout the valley and is rated R for violence, bloody images and language. It runs for 125 minutes.

Focus: Pollen Allergies Article retrieved from https://www.webmd.com/ allergies/pollen_allergies_overview#1 Flowers are blooming, or lawns or trees are bursting with new greenery, and -- like clockwork -- your eyes water, your nose runs, and the sneezes keep coming. You wish you could enjoy the nice weather, but you end up miserable whenever you head outside. You think it might be a cold, but there’s a pattern. Every year, you have the same symptoms when spring (or summer or fall) is in the air. You probably have seasonal allergies, which are sometimes called hay fever. Causes Some plants, including ragweed, grasses, and oak trees, make a fine powder called pollen that’s light enough to travel through the air. This is how these plants grow and reproduce themselves. More than 25 million Americans are allergic to pollen. Some people are allergic to tree pollen, which is in the air in spring. Others have a problem with grass pollen, which is more of a summertime issue. Still others have trouble with weed pollen, which is common in the fall. Symptoms If you have a pollen allergy and go outside on a day when it’s flying around, your body will react as if it’s being invaded. Your immune system will make a lot of something called histamine to fight back. When this happens, you can have symptoms like: Itchy throat Red, itchy, watery eyes Runny or stuffy nose Sneezing Wheezing or coughing Treatment Your doctor may first want to confirm that you have an allergy. An allergist can give you a skin-prick test to see what’s causing your problem. Once that’s narrowed down, there are a few ways to treat pollen allergies: Nasal irrigation. It rinses out your sinuses using a squeeze bottle, neti pot, or other device with a saltwater (saline) solution. Make sure you use distilled or sterile
TL
water. If you use tap water, you must boil it and let it cool off before you use it. Or you can filter it with a filter that says “NSF 53” or “NSF 58” or says “absolute pore size” of 1 micron or smaller. Also, be sure you clean the bottle or neti pot after every use, also using distilled, sterile, boiled, or filtered water. Over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. Antihistamines block the histamine your body makes. If your nose is stuffy, decongestants can help you breathe easier. Some nasal sprays help allergy symptoms, too. Prescription medication. If the OTC drugs don’t work, your doctor may prescribe something stronger. Some prescribed meds block chemicals other than histamine that can trigger allergies. Others treat the symptoms caused by certain kinds of weed or grass pollen. Allergy shots. If you don’t have any luck with medications, allergy shots may help. You’ll go to the allergist every few weeks for the doctor to inject a tiny amount of what’s causing your problem under your skin. After a period of months, your body should get used to the trigger and your symptoms should get better. Helpful Tips Check the weather. Your local weather report should say whether it’s a high or low pollen-count day. Pollen counts are higher when it’s warm, dry, and windy and lower when it’s cool, rainy, and wet. If you know it’s going to be a high-pollen day, stay inside as much as you can. The yard work can wait. Keep pollen out. Instead of opening the windows in your car or at home, run your air conditioner with an HEPA filter to remove pollen from the air. Don’t hang your laundry on a line to dry or it will pick up pollen; use the dryer. If you’ve spent time outside, change your clothing, shower, and wash your hair before you get into bed. If you don't, you’ll transfer pollen to your pillow and blankets and breathe it in all night. If you let your pet spend time outside, don’t allow it into your bedroom. Create a pollen buffer outside. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and a hat to keep pollen off your hair. Take medicine. When pollen counts are high, take your medication before you notice symptoms to stop them before they start.

In and Around Toscana DANI'S DIGEST
By Dani Wall, Administrative Assistant Dani’s 5 Ways To… Honor Veterans on Memorial Day
1. Learn what Memorial Day is really all about, and share that with your Children and Grandchildren. Memorial Day isn’t a shopping opportunity, or another bonus day off. It isn’t even another Veteran’s Day. Memorial Day is dedicated specifically to those who have died while serving in the United States military. Each year, the last Monday in May becomes a sacred time as we remember our fallen warriors by speaking about them, holding memorial ceremonies, and lending a helping hand to our living veterans. The idea of honoring deceased warriors has a deep history, but the American practice began just after the end of the Civil War. The enormous number of casualties, on both sides of this terrible war, took burial and memorialization to new heights of cultural significance, and the formal decoration of graves began to take place. No matter our faith, political leaning, or culture, this is a day for all of us to come together and honor our fallen warriors. 2. Donate to Veterans Honor the fallen by supporting our living veterans. Disabled American Veterans Charitable Trust Fund, Thanks USA, and the Fisher House Foundation can stretch your dollars further that you can. There are veterans struggling with lack of social support, mental illness, physical disabilities, transitions back to civilian living, and many other issues that need our help. These charities help provide scholarship opportunities, homes, essential services, and rehabilitation programs. 3. Volunteer If you are looking for a way to really help your veterans, contact your local VA medical center. They have ample opportunities to give your time to sick and injured veterans. If you have ever been to the VA Hospital, you know that they will gladly take the help offered. The last time I went, it was truly a bag of mixed emotions and I was so happy to be there. I went shortly

after my grandfather passed to thank his nurses for being so amazing. I brought a donation to the veterans selling items in the hallways they had made with their own hands. There are memories of those who died posted all over the walls, bringing in a strong emotion of pride and strength for Country. It makes you take a step back and realize that the small every day fuss you make over little things is so minute compared to what these people in front of you have sacrificed. Veteran’s inspirational notes are left on papers that anyone can take with them as they walk through the halls. These strong supporters don’t lose their spirit, we should help them support our veterans as much as possible. 4. Send a Care Package One of my personal favorites is Operation Shoebox. The website leads you to many ways you can help veterans including, donating old cell phones, volunteering, sending shoeboxes, donating money for supplies to keep them warm or entertained with magazines and board games, and setting a classroom up with a box to send full of pictures, supplies and handwritten letters to our deployed service members. They love receiving toothpaste, instant coffee, sunscreen, tissues, baby wipes, body wash, Candy (who doesn’t), beef jerky, books, magazines, and other store-bought treats. 5. Honor the National Moment of Remembrance May 3rd, 2000, Congress promoted a “National Moment of Remembrance” encouraging Americans everywhere to pause for one minute at 3 p.m. (local time) on each Memorial Day. This is a great way to make that Memorial Day Barbeque about more than just eating burgers. Mindful Note: Wear Red, White and Blue, But Not the Flag. Many people aren’t aware that the flag is not meant to be worn as an accessory, even when it’s printed as a design on fabric. Ideally, disposable items such as napkins and cups printed with the flag shouldn’t be used either. The flag isn’t meant to be a decoration, even though you’ll start seeing it used as such in more and more places as the summer months approach.

NICOLE'S NOTABLES
By Nicole Careaga, Community Manager How do I make my monthly HOA payments? A very common question that we encounter here at the office is “how can I pay my HOA dues?” We have a few options and one of them is bound to meet your needs. Direct Debit. This option is definitely the easiest and safest option in that you supply us with the information and we ensure that it is pulled each month around the 5th and will automatically update with any assessment changes. Also, this option never expires, and will be active until you decide to terminate the agreement or sell your unit. Check. Each December, we mail each of you a coupon book that has a coupon for each month of the year. On it is the amount owed, due date and mailing address. Online E-check. This is a free option, that allows you to pay via an online e-payment HERE and all that is required is your banking information and your association account number. Online Recurring Payment is a free option that automatically pays your bill each month. This option requires that you schedule the payment and make any adjustments manually if the assessment amount changes. Note, this option does expire, and requires you to manually re-new it. Online Credit Card Payment. This option is $14.95 per occurrence and requires you to enter all of the information each month.
As you can see, making your assessment payment really couldn’t be easier, plus I am always here if you have any questions or need further assistance.

Toscana Pool Rules were created using City/County codes, keeping in mind our large number of pool users. UPDATES FROM YOUR MAINTENANCE TEAM By John Raabe, Facilities Director Vandalism in Toscana I would once again like to discuss vandalism around Toscana. We are very fortunate that we do not have to deal with large scale vandalism, such as spray painting or damage to large structures, but we do have some issues with small scale vandalism that still costs the community time and money. Most of our issues are small and easily fixed by paying proper attention. Recently, we have discovered a lot of scuff marks along the baseboards in buildings; it appears as if residents with carts are running into the wall, leaving large black marks all down the halls. We have also had issues with someone tampering with the roll up doors, which causes them to go into a fault. A fault signal causes us to call out our gate vendor, who often determines the gates were powered down incorrectly or someone opened the box and deactivated the unit entirely. Down in the parkades we have had several of the parking curbs hit or run over, breaking them loose from their and spots and breaking the curbs themselves. These curbs are extremely heavy and cause a huge eye sore when they are broken and covered in tire marks.
Our largest and longest-standing issue, however, is littering and pet waste. In the parkades, there has been large amounts of trash left in parking stalls and walkways. We have also received some reports of residents walking their dogs in the parkade and leaving any urine or waste their pet leaves behind. On the surface, we receive constant complaints and photos of pet waste not being cleaned up, as well. We attempt to mitigate this eye(and nose)-sore by instructing our landscaping crew and porter to keep an eye out for pet waste and dispose of it. However, this is not their full-time job. The landscapers are on a rotation within the property and may not see a certain are for 3 weeks and the porter has several other jobs, as well, and does not always have time to do a full property clean-up. So it is very important that every pet owner is cleaning up their own pet waste. Per the CCRs, the first time someone is caught not cleaning up their pet’s waste they will receive a violation letter and fine in the amount of $200. With each additional instance, the fine increases. This can be extremely costly to residents who are not picking up pet waste. If you see someone vandalizing your community, please let us know. Help us keep your community looking beautiful.
