Summative Evaluation (See Evaluation Guidance on next page for more information) You are required to write a 750 word Summative Evaluation of this module. Please type up your Summative Evaluation in the box below. Make a PDF of the document, print out a copy to submit with your portfolio of work. Also please cut and paste the text from this box into the final page(s) of your OUIL505 Project Report. I was very excited on the beginning of this module, after a success of OUL504. Therefore, still inspired by fashion, the topic from the previous project, I have decided to base my project on fashion illustration. I wasn’t exactly sure on what I would like to do, other than creating characters and relate it to mode. After a development and few tries of recreating the already existing ladies dressed in fancy clothes, I have dropped the idea. The idea of recreating characters wasn’t for me. I also think that I needed to step back from the subject of fashion. During the research on the first project I have found the illustrator called Laura Laine, who designed few zodiac characters for ELLE Russia, and this has inspired me to focus my project on zodiac signs. I thought it would be a great opportunity to create characters, as I have planned on the beginning of the module. In my free time I have created quite a lot of sketches. After the Christmas brake, I have changed mine main medium to ink, so I have drew a lot, trying to explore new tool. The idea for final piece came unexpectedly, from trying a new ink brush. I have created a cancer sign, and on the same day decided to add some collage into it. Encouraged by my ‘happy accident’ I have created few other pieces of work based on the first idea. Second semester of the level 5 was the most intense so far. Other modules took a lot of my time and effort, which is why I haven’t experimented as much as I would like to. Fortunately the idea I had on the beginning was good, so I kept creating in similar aesthetic. Collage and ink were working very well on my illustrations. I was a little bit worried about lack of colour in my drawings, they seemed a little bit unfinished for me and I was also wondering if they don’t look boring because of the black and white look. The

problem was that I didn’t wanted to add just a detail of colour, as in my previous project for 504 and also in animation for responsive. The black, white and colour option looks very good, although I don’t want to repeat myself so often, instead I want to explore. Another problem was the timing. Even if I would like to experiment with colour a little bit more, I am not confident enough with a colorful palette, so I couldn’t change so much in short amount of time. After few consultations, crit and analysis of produced work I have decided to stick to black and white palette. The other issue was context. I did the illustrations in thought of editorial application. I have imagined my illustrations in the magazine, in the occultist section, where each month different illustration would be shown, depend on the zodiac sign that is leading in the current month. I think that this is still a really exciting idea, and that I might be interested in editorial in the future. Although I prefer long-term projects where I can explore subject in depth, I am a quite quick maker and I am coming with the ideas quite quickly. That skill is something priceless in this profession. During the process of making, I have decided to make posters. I think the changing point was printing the work bigger then A4. The images looked so much better! That moment encouraged me to create posters for imaginary theatre play. I haven’t changed much in the design of my illustrations- just added the most important information. I am always afraid that the type I use wouldn’t match my illustrations, but after I have practice a little with making posters for LCA Film Society, I became a little bit better. I still need to work on the type in my projects, but thanks to Polish Poster School I am learning a lot about poster making. I have mentioned it in responsive evaluation, but I am really finding myself in poster making. I would be very excited to extend it onto my professional practice, as I am film and theatre enthusiast. The last application was tattoo. I wasn’t quite sure about it, because anything can be a tattoo design, and I can’t tattoo myself, so I didn’t focus on that application that much. I have made some funny mock-ups and posted them on my blog, just to check how the design would look on a body builder. But to be honest, I would like to try the art of tattooing in the future. I think it might be a very interesting profession. That is something to think about. Over all I think the set of illustrations I have created suits the project. All of them are cohesive, because of the colour, media and mark usage. They give a certain, disturbing, but also playful vibe. The only thing I would change is the background colour. I think I have a tendency to contrast my images too much, so the analogue feel of the background is missing. Also background itself- I feel like I should have added something more into the composition, because the characters look good as vignettes in the idea of editorial illustrations. But some of them look unfinished as posters.
