HEALTH

Modern Oriental Medicine & Meridian Therapy by

A

DR. George Love

Arrogance

ccording to Health and Human Services figures in 1996 the number one cause of death in all ethnic groups was heart disease, including myocardial infarction, hypertension and stroke. Colo-rectal, lung, breast and prostate cancers were the number two cause of death. And the number three cause of death was diabetes and its complications of foot amputations, blindness, etc. According to the American Heart Association the causes of heart disease are smoking, lack of exercise and poor (high fat) diet. Now in all intelligence, how can taking a drug offset another drug like nicotine (smoking)? How can taking a pharmaceutical drug balance lack of exercise? How can poisoning your body offset a high fat diet? Assuming the American Heart Association is correct and I think that they are, the profession of cardiology is not interested in treating the cause of heart disease, but merely the symptoms. Asking your oncologist why you have cancer, will not produce satisfactory answers. The causes of Cancer are unknown out side of environmental poisoning and heredity according to the American Cancer Society. The treatment however, is surgery and Chemo/Radiation. That is like using a Bazooka gun to kill a mouse. Sure, you get rid of the mouse but your house is full of holes. Using chemo/radiation is like blowing up your transportation system because of a traffic jam. Why would you poison your blood and potentially destroy your kidneys and liver just to kill cells that have mutated because of your own ignorance of diet and lifestyle? If you knew the cause of your cancer, would you try to reverse it naturally? Using Oriental Medicine to reverse the process of tumor formation, Surgery and Chemo/radiation becomes an option rather than a standard treatment. Adult onset Type II Diabetes is an autoimmune deficiency disease. It is caused, not so much by sugar intake, as fried foods, heavy starches and refined flours like bread and bagels. It can also be caused by iatrogenesis - the taking of drugs for other diseases. Pregnancy

of

Western Medicine

complications can cause Gestational diabetes. Why would you take a drug to control your blood sugar when you can change your diet? Some Medical doctors will say that patients will not comply with dietary changes. I have asked many diabetics if they would change their diet to get off medications, and none have refused! Taking drugs is a choice and I am not blaming medical doctors. They are only doing what they have been trained to do, PUSH DRUGS! When first year medical students attend class the first week they are given a doctors bag with prescription drugs in it. The message is quite clear, their job is to prescribe drugs. The science of logic dictates that if your premise is wrong, no matter how logical your argument is, the conclusion will be wrong. The premise of Western Medicine is that humans are mechanical creatures that can be repaired with interchangeable parts. The premise of Oriental Medicine is that humans are electro-magnetic creatures that must be self-regulated energetically. The Western physician is a Mechanical engineer and the Oriental Physician is an Electrical engineer. They are both engineers but what are they working on, and which system will yield the best results?

Modern Oriental Medicine

hat is the alternative to drugs and surgery? The answer has been around for over four thousand years. The Eight Limbs of Modern Oriental Medicine are Diagnosis, Breathing, Meditation, Exercise, Massage, Food, Herbs and Acupuncture. The Yellow Emperors Guide to Internal Medicine is dated back to at least 300 hundred BCE. In Sri Lanka, stone tablets written in Sanskrit describing acupuncture meridian therapy date back to 1000 BCE. The Medical papyri of Egypt date back to at least 1800 BCE where they describe both the circulation of blood and Chi through twelve vessels, which is the basis of Oriental Medicine. Gold and silver acupuncture needles have been found in Egyptian burial sites.

Breathing exercises will correct many emo-

tional problems before they become physical problems. Oriental medicine is based on the circulation of Chi or Qi. This Chi is electro-magnetic energy that circulates through carefully defined pathways called meridians. The literal translation of Ch’i is Breath. This corresponds to the ancient Greek element called Pneuma or air that circulates within the body. According to Tibetan medicine, the ultimate cause of all disease is a spiritual imbalance. Observation shows us that when the spirit is weak, the breathing is shallow. Picture if you will, a child observing her parents argue, or being abused, or feeling her siblings are the enemy, will contract her abdominal muscles, tense her body and hold her breath. This reduces the circulation of chi and is the origin of all disease.

www.nuestromagazine.com

Meditation is a major tool in the Oriental

Medicine Bag. Unfortunately it is not part of our culture and we tend to lump it into esoteric, occult, anti-religious and cultist fads. Adults create for themselves, job stress, money stress, in-law stress, etc. They worry and are anxious about things they have no control over. This mental stress is distracting from basic things like eating and sleeping. We make poor food choices and do not get quality sleep when we are mentally stressed. Meditation is the best way to still the mind, calm and relax the nervous system. Meditation is the flip side of prayer and is a powerful daily ritual that will help you accomplish your goals.

Exercise in the West is considered good for cardio-vascular strength and muscle

Nuestro Magazine • Nov/Dec/Jan 2018

training, however the other benefits are not well understood. When exercising, one gets hot, which creates an artificial fever in the body that kills viruses, fungi, bacteria and parasites. If one exercises daily for 30-40 minutes, one automatically strengthens the immune system by routinely killing microbial infections. Secondly, one perspires when hot, which opens the pores of the skin to eliminate toxins. Lastly, exercise squeezes and pumps the lymphatic system that increases function of the immune system and blood flow back to the heart. The best exercises were invented in Asia, which include Taoist Yoga and Medical Chi Gong. Meridian Chi gong activates the acupuncture meridians and stimulates the internal organs. Tai Chi is a martial chi gong, which has been adapted for health. There are eighty textbooks on Massage therapy written in the last two thousand years in China. Only five of them were translated to create what we know as Swedish Massage. Chiropractic or spinal manipulation was also described in writing at least one thousand years before D.D. Palmer invented Chiropractic manipulation. All of the modern massage techniques such as Trager, Rolfing, Soma, Osteopathy, Cranial Sacral, etc. were known in Chinese and Tibetan Medicine. Other techniques are Thai Massage, Ayurvedic Massage, Tibetan Massage and Tui-Na, which is Chinese Medical Massage. Tui-Na includes joint and spinal manipulation. Chinese Dietetics or Food Therapy is part of the development and culture of China and practically all of Asia. Through observation and understanding of seasonal change and availability of foodstuffs the Chinese, Persians, Hindus, Indonesians, etc. were able to make medical decisions part of the culture. For example the seasoning we call curry powder is actually a medicine. The five culinary spices of turmeric, garlic, cayenne, black pepper and ginger all have medicinal properties. Because refrigeration was non-existent until modern times, preserving food was a problem. Using these spices all together was a way of strengthening the immune system to prevent food poisoning. Modern Chinese Herbal Medicine has developed a way to increase the potency of herbs and decrease the dosage. Typically one needs fifteen to thirty grams of herbal medicine to be effective. This translates as

HEALTH ten to fifteen capsules per day, which many Americans would consider too many pills to take. The ancient way of Herbal healing was to place the herbs in a soup pot that everyone in the family ate from, because if one person was sick, eventually they all would become sick. When you read the names of Chinese Herbal formulas you will usually see the word Tang at the end. Tang means soup. Herbal Medicine or Herbal Food Therapy was both prevention and treatment. Herbs could also be prepared as pills (wan), drinks (jiang), liqueurs (chieuw) or granules (kampo).

A

cupuncture is the eighth Limb of Modern Oriental Medicine. Jing-luo or Meridian Therapy is what the Chinese call their medicine, not Acupuncture. Magnets, sound waves, laser light, electrical stimulation, heat, suction and pressure are used to stimulate the meridians. Another ancient name translated as Heat and Pressure, is today called, Acu-Moxa therapy. Acupuncture or Meridian therapy is the last resort in the Chinese Medicine Bag. It is the inferior Physician who waits until his patients become sick before treatment. It is the Superior Physician who teaches them how to prevent illness. The Superiority of Modern Chinese Medicine is demonstrated in the treatment of Degenerative Disease. Heart disease, liver stress, kidney failure and lung diseases can be diagnosed up to five years before Western diagnostic equipment. These can be treated preventively with food, herbs and acupuncture. Aging is a natural process, however in the West we suffer from pre-mature aging and young people suffer from diseases associated with aging such as arthritis, heart disease, stroke and cancer. Through proper lifestyle such as breathing, meditation, Chi Gong exercises, regular massage therapy and food therapy we can prevent Degenerative diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, strokes, hypertension and cancer. After your illness is revealed then Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture should be considered as the first form of treatment. When your chi is depleted to the point the point of no return, then and only then should drugs and surgery be considered. According to a number of sources from Chiropractors to Osteopaths and Acupuncturists.

There are 3 causes of dis-ease. TRAUMA 1. Mental Emotional Stress - causing poor eating habits and poor lifestyle, TB, autoimmune, Weakened immune function, colds & flu 2. Electromagnetic radiation - weakened immune function, parasites, auto-immune, 3. Structural Physical imbalance - pain, injuries, accidents, Circulatory disease INSUFFICIENCY 4. Nutritional insufficiency - heart disease, diabetes, cancer, auto-immune, digestive disorders 5. Lack of physical rest, Lack of Mental Relaxation & Tranquility 6. Lack of oxygen in the blood, lack of water or exercise TOXICITY 7. Chemical Toxicity - Air, Water, Food 8. Microbial - parasites, Ulcers,

CO-FACTORS OF DIS-EASE

We have identified several important co-factors involved with the formation of disease. Lack of security, Negative Thinking Self Love No good humor or Laughter, Lack of Spiritual Upliftment, Low Self esteem There are two ways of looking at the disease process. The eastern and the western. The western we are familiar with. You know the so called germ theory. Accidents, Infectious diseases and degenerative disease, which are also caused by germs. Cut it out or kill it. Military mentality. The eastern viewpoint is that proper lifestyle

and diet will create an internal environment or biological terrain that will either support disease and infection or not support disease and infection. We propose both Nurturing and Nutrition, a holy whole health mentality. 35th Anniversary Juan & Nelson Entertainment

T

he indie label with the longest trajectory in Latin Music celebrates 35 years of hits

www.nuestromagazine.com

The history of Latin music cannot be written without mentioning Juan Hidalgo and Nelson Estevez, who, for 35 years have headed up the record label J & N Records, now Juan & Nelson Entertainment. Innovation has been their key to success as they celebrate more than three decades in the industry. At present, Juan & Nelson embark on multiple projects with an ambitious plan for marketing and promotion, compatible with the digital era. The record label has lived through continuing change, and has known how to adapt to the morphing market. In response the label has expanded its team, and has signed new artists to 360 deals - as record label, publisher and manager for the world. As an emerging company, Juan Hidalgo, its President confirms, “ We started with an investment of $13,000 dollars and we give thanks to God for the success we have enjoyed. We are the only record label that has remained independent, and I am proud of that fact. We have changed the dynamic within the company little by little to adapt to today’s market and digital exploitation; though physical is barely on the map, digital can be looked at as an added value to music that was non-existent in the past. This is positive because it helps for the music to reach previously inaccessible places. I believe in all innovation that makes the world smaller,” stated Hidalgo.

Nuestro Magazine • Nov/Dec/Jan 2018

In the meantime, his brother and partner Nelson Estevez states that the most beautiful part of this business the unknown, the mystery of what may happen tomorrow. “You never know where the hit may be. That is why in this business, as the years pass, one is never bored, and everything becomes an unforgettable memory. We have been changing, and in business this is important. Of all of the independent record labels that were created years ago, we are the only ones still in existence. We have recorded merengue, salsa, ballads, bachata, and beyond, and as a company we are open to whatever comes, and we are going to continue recording everything, provided the music is well done!” stated Estevez. Juan & Nelson Entertainment is currently promoting new faces in Urban Music, Urban being the style currently monopolizing the market. True to the label’s extensive catalogue of classic tropical music, J & N continues to support projects in more roots-based Latin American styles as well as Pop and Jazz. Within their new offices they have built a recording studio and television studio space to create content, record music videos and present artist performances. In addition they are working on a digital education program so that children in other countries may have the opportunity to learn about music at a low cost.

ENTERTAINMENT BUSINESS About Juan & Nelson Entertainment

The label commenced as a humble “ma & pa” retail record store in Corona Queens, NY, where they sold LPs and cassettes. With the passing of time the brothers were approached by artists looking for a way to record and release their music. “We made records and nobody bought them – only two that we bought ourselves! But we kept on trying. Finally we signed Ramon Orlando Valoy and everything went really well. From there we signed los Toros Band, La Artilleria, Proyecto Uno, Alex Bueno among other artists. Today, 35 years later, we are still betting on new talent,” explained Nelson. The company, previously known as J & N Records, has recorded more than 25,000 songs; they have released dozens of platinum and golden records with many millions of copies sold throughout the world; there have been innumerable international hits, as well as recognition in the industry by The Grammys (both American and Latin), Billboard, ASCAP, BMI, to name a few. Without the shadow of a doubt, J & N has written a large chapter in the history of Latin Music over the past 3 decades. Within J & N’s many successes and hits are classic artists that broke all normal industry rules with amazing success. “We had such a major hit with “Cachamba” by Kinito Mendez, where we sold more than a million units- for that particular era in the mid 90s, this was an unprecedented feat. And with Proyecto Uno we had a landmark hit with “El tiburon,” which continues to this day as a top seller for synchronization,” states Juan Hidalgo. Juan’s sense of satisfaction is connected to the company’s legacy, which he will be able to pass down to the new generation. Brothers Juan & Nelson have produced artists such as Frank Reyes, Monchy & Alexandra, Zacarías Ferreira, Raulín Rodríguez, Alex Bueno, Tito Rojas, Johnny Ventura, Mily Quezada, Willie Rosario, Kinito Méndez, Fernandito Villalona, Los Hermanos Rosario, Rikarena, La Máquina, Puerto Rican Power, among many, many others. In addition, they

were the precursors in innovating Urban Music in Puerto Rico, where they recorded Vico C, Fransheska, Lisa M and Falo during the 90s. “At one time we had offices in New York, Santo Domingo, Colombia, Puerto Rico and Miami. We represented Fonovisa in Latin America, and this was very interesting because of the amazing splash made by their artists at the time – Enrique Iglesias, Marco Antonio Solis, Cristian Castro and Noelia, who had great success in Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and Venezuela. Unlike the old days, in today’s market we have access to all of those territories, and beyond, via Internet,” states Nelson. Nelson believes the most important prize is to remain in business. After a brief period of separation, Juan & Nelson never abandoned the music business – in spite of the fact that Juan relocated to Puerto Rico and Nelson remained in New York. Later they changed again. Juan moved to Miami and Nelson to the Dominican Republic to produce and A & R music. During the trajectory of the company, J & N has owned and successfully run 3 RUMBA radio stations in the DR, as well as one of the best local recording studios, EMCA. The company also acquired historic catalogues including Musical Productions and Remo Records – and administrates other, including Discorona. The brothers’ relationships, experience, intuition and knowledge of disparate markets have put them where they are today – the indie label with the most grandiose trajectory in the Latin market and with more hits than any other in a spectrum of musical genres.

ETIQUETTIC CORNER

How To Navigate The Office Holiday Party the invitation, HR can share wardrobe tips, and so can a trusted colleague. The holiday event, in whatever form it takes, is an extension of the work day, so it’s all business. Choose modest attire that maintains the professional reputation you’ve built. Avoid short skirts, tight clothes, or inappropriate ugly Christmas sweaters.

Ioffice t’s that time of year again. The infamous holiday party is here. Be sure to

attend, as skipping out sends the wrong message to the powers that be. Keep in mind that your organization planned this event to celebrate the year’s accomplishments and to thank the employees. Be careful: this isn’t just any ordinary party. What happens here could determine whether or not you get that promotion and even set the course for the rest of your time with this company. The following tips will help you impress your colleagues and have them talking about you the next day - for the right reasons.

RSVP Be sure to respond to an invitation with 48 hours, regardless of whether it comes via Evite, email, telephone or traditional methods. As much as you may not wish to attend the office holiday party, you must. Attendance is practically mandatory – failing to go to the annual holiday party sends a negative message. Executives and upper management will take note. Don’t Automatically Assume You Can Bring an Extra Guest Be sure to read the invitation carefully. Know the company policy on guests, or whether the event is ‘Employees Only’ or has a ‘Plus One.’ Discreetly check ahead of time to determine whether spouses or dates are welcome. It can vary by company. Dress to Impress The holiday party is one of your few chances to see colleagues outside of the office. Dress up--but do so the right way. The dress code will be printed on Nuestro Magazine • Nov/Dec/Jan 2018

Don’t Binge at the Buffet Eat a small amount of protein before the party to curb your appetite. You were not invited because the hosts thought you were hungry! Be considerate of others and remember your etiquette basics – keep hands clean and avoid a mouth full of hors d’oeuvres. Avoid walking around with a full plate, do not double dip or eat over the chafing dish, and properly discard toothpicks, napkins, and plates. Network, Network, Network This is your chance to converse with senior leaders of the organization with whom you may not typically get much face time. Avoid clinging to your cubby buddy. Instead, meet customers, and new faces from other departments. If you work for a large organization and don’t often see the CEO, introduce yourself, state the department you work in, and shake their hand (keep your beverage in your left hand so your right is dry, and free to shake). These interactions might open doors for future growth opportunities. Thank the hosts, party planners and your superiors when departing. Avoid gossip or talking shop (this is a party, after all!). Skip controversial conversation topics (religion, politics, sex) and keep the mood positive and light. Travel, pets, movies, and books are conversation starters. At all costs, avoid appearing bored and ready to dash for the door. Don’t be Monday’s Gossip This is probably the most common mistake that executives make during the holiday party. Alcohol and a loose tongue may add up to a regretful Monday morning equation. Consider tea, club soda or water. If you choose to drink, do so responsibly. Don’t Clap for Yourself The CEO may offer a toast during the evening. When the toast is for a colleague, raise your glass at the conclusion of the toast, when the host raises

their glass. Do not touch your glass with everyone elses; it is unnecessary and distracting. Pause afterwards and watch. The recipient will most likely reciprocate with a toast. If you have been a star performer, you may be honored with a toast. Stand and accept it gracefully. Refrain from drinking to a toast offered in your honor; this is akin to clapping for yourself. Be sure to stand and make a toast to the person who toasted you, thanking them for the recognition. Watch the Clock Be sure to arrive and leave at appropriate times. Arriving too late shows a lack of appreciation, and overstaying is inconsiderate to the hosts. Arrive within 15-20

minutes of the start time, and leave 30 minutes before the end time. The office holiday party is a time for cheer, so enjoy yourself! Remember that the holiday event, whether a luncheon, open house, or dinner is still a work event. Knowing the rules of business holiday etiquette will help you navigate the upcoming season like a pro, not to mention give you an edge on the competition.
