After

Glacial ice caves form when a hot spring or volcanic activity excavates underneath a snow field. This process creates multifaceted dome structures (see inspiration image) that arch high overhead. The driving force behind the biophillic principals used in this redesign is these cave features and what lies outside them. Refuge, material connection with nature, prospect, and use of biomorphic forms and patterns were the main principals that guided the design of this space. Designing a space to be a refuge from the cold winters was a primary concern. Plush materials for upholstery, warm soft rugs, layered lighting, and a large fireplace all create a comfortable arctic haven. The natural materials used in this space included marble, wood, and granite. The chocolate colored Amani Marble AttachĂŠ is a simulation of the earth itself at the bottom of a snow cave. The Thunder White Granite slab that encases the columns represents the middle of the visual scale against the large pattern of the marble tiles and the small scale of the City lights tiles. Raw wood end tables are used throughout the space as a further textural and visual connection to the natural world. Even the wicker sofa and armchair from Expormim use natural materials for a tactile experience.

The change in ceiling height to creates a compress and expand moment reminiscent of exiting a cave to the boundless natural world. The transition from low to high creates a varied experience that simulates nature, especially when paired with the curved ceiling. Organic lines are used throughout the space in different applications as a further homage to the environment. The City Lights Wheel 720 St. Moritz pattern was used as an abstraction of the many, domed forms that together create the arch of the cave. This space provides a large open area with large glass windows and doors to allow for unimpeded views of the nearby mountain. The NanaWall BEARicade doors fold out to allow for maximum access to the changing seasons. Curved lines again are emphasized in the furnishings, which include Bernhardt Design sofas, Organic Modernism coffee tables, and Jan Kath area rugs. Even the decorative lighting, by Paul Mathieu, on the curved wall was inspired by a perched bird. The use of biomorphic forms in the sculptural furniture and fixtures is something that creates a connection to the curving hills and mountains all around. This design won first runner up in the Daltile student design competition.

START WITH ART TWYLA COMPETITION 6

ALI GUYMON

James Gortner, the artist of The Watcher, paints scenes over thrift store art. He told Twyla that he explores "interconnectivity, artistic production, mysticism, and the tradition of painting". In this bathroom I wanted to capture the essence of the painting through materials. Using the Eros Grey Field Tile from Ann Sacks and the Vespasian Stone Double-Slipper Tub created a stone base for the room that mimicked the visual weight of the large

rock that is a large grounding element of the painting. The Gisele Chandelier from OLY created an abstract birdlike element to complement the elegant heron. Portraiture is an integral part of James' work. I wanted to tie that into the environment. The Hand Side Table from Noir was used to incorporate that human element into the space. Color was a directly influenced by the painting, pulling its warm yellow hues and bright greenery.

Project: Custom carpet for the Durkan D*SCOVER competition 2017 this design placed 3rd Standout: Cacti have unique properties that allow them to appear soft and yet be very dangerous. This adaptation inspired the texture variation that allows this carpet to hide spills and dirt and hold up in high traffic areas. Carved elements give another layer of dimension. YUĂ N SPA AND CUSTOM PATTERN The YuĂĄn Medical Spa was inspired by the Yuanyang rice terraces in the Yunnan province of China. The rice terraces were created by the Hani people as a sculptural taming of the landscape. 12

ALI GUYMON

Lines inspired by the rice terraces were used to create the unique lines of the front desk. The lines evoke of cloud forms which also inspired the finish selections. Most notably would be the Mars wallpaper by Trove

in the hallway and locker room. The form of the Ann Saks Carved Stone Hua Field tiles from in the sauna is quite reminiscent of the terraces. The custom wall covering explores the colors and lines

within the Yuanuang terraces at different times of the day and during different seasons. The colors are also drawn from the traditional festival clothing of the Hani people.

STEINWORKS OPEN OFFICE Today's office has gone away from formality and towards casual collaboration. This open office challenge was given to us by our regional Herman Miller distributor Henriksen Butler. In a team of four, we were challenged to use Herman Miller’s Living Office research and their products to create an efficient office for a fictional start-up company. Steinworks is the company 18

ALI GUYMON

that created the Chroma pen, a device that allows the user to draw on any surface and create a digital file of their writing. This office, inspired by the work of Roy Lichtenstein, uses bright colors and dot-like forms. Lichtenstein-esque murals are seen throughout the office to define individual spaces. A variety of desking options are available for people who work in different ways. Coves,

havens, jump spaces and more were created for the uses, as seen in the color-blocked plan. In addition to the large formal conference room there is a smaller, less-formal conference room that is reservable, as well as lounge areas throughout the space that allow for impromptu meetings and scheduled meetings to take a more relaxed tone.

LANDSLIDE ROCK AND GEM SHOP This project is located in Green River, Utah. Landslide Rock and Gem was inspired by dinosaur digs of Utah. Eastern Utah in particular is known for its large collection of Jurassic era fossils, and dig sites. The fossils, rocks, and minerals found in Utah are rare and beautiful items that have to be uncovered; and the inspiration for this space highlights this. A plaster technique was used to give the impression of layers of age and the reveal of a rib-like painting on the brick wall. The custom display furniture

22

ALI GUYMON

was also inspired by the layered earth that fossils and minerals are found in, and the fossilized bones themselves. The sedimentation was depicted in the piece to the right through layered drawers while the space created by lofting two of the drawers hints at the unknown during the excavation process. A small apartment was an addition to the existing building to allow for this to be a live-work environment for the owner. The apartment includes an open living room, dining room, and kitchen with a single adjoining bedroom and bath.

PAVONINE 1000 SQ FT RESIDENCE

26

ALI GUYMON

Building Section

This residence may be small but the visual impact leaves a larger-than-life impression. The form for this building was inspired by El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. An abstraction of the summit that emphasized its verticality was

the basis of the arched forms that come together to create the north side of the building. The verticality is enforced by the repetition of the east and west windows that also provide indirect light because of the depth of the exterior walls.

The white cantilevered pool pierces through the dark exterior to create a focal point. The pool extends all the way from the pool deck to the bedroom door with a floating walkway spanning the distance between the two.

Transforming furniture was used to make the best use of the small space available. The bedroom makes use of a murphy bed that doubles as a desk. The living room coffee table changes height to become a dining table.

BEACHCRAFT VENICE BEACH HOME

34

ALI GUYMON

The client’s collections of art and sculpture, as well as his varied interests, allowed for exploration of his personality through this design. Venice Beach is known for its off-beat artist colonies, quirky people, and, of course, the ocean. The client’s love for the area and art guided the concept of beachcraft, the captivating nature of the eccentric and maritime. This home was designed for entertainment. The dining

room was inspired by the theater. A dual backdrop with a contrast of hard and soft materials creates a scene for the characters, the table and chairs. They are dramatically lit with Niamh Berry lighting and pulled together with the curtain, the Jan Kath rug that sits on the stage. The large NANA walls open up all along the exterior. This integrates interior and exterior entertaining areas.

BREW PUB SILENT CITY BREWERY The branding for this bar was created to evoke both Old West and new city sensibilities. The interiors also bring these elements together with modern interpretations of the Old West. To bring the feelings of an old saloon into the space, acoustical tin ceiling tiles and

a comfortable mixture of chairs were used. Furniture with straps and ropes were used to reference ranching theme. The large custom lighting fixture, inspired by a wagon wheel, draws the eye into the space and towards the bar.
