SPACE - Urban Transformation of the AtatĂźrk Airport / 2017 - 2018 Spring Semester Istanbul (Europe) Green Space

The shor tage of green areas in Istanbul is evident . When we examine the European side closely, the presence of nor thern forests covering a large area in the nor th is thebest and most conser vative aspec t of green space def iciency. Since Istanbul can be a livable city, it will be more possible by protec ting and increasing these green areas and it is necessar y to maintain this green area density and increase it as much as possible.

GREEN CITY. LIVEABILITY. NORTHERN FORESTS

Analysis

Map of Istanbul Density When we look at Istanbul f rom the upper scale, it is a growing city with a strategy that concentrates at cer tain points and turns these regions into a sea of housing. This strategy has also been implemented in the regions around AtatĂźrk Airpor t and the dense residential areas have surrounded the airpor t .

Transpor tation

Ataturk Airpor t is one of the most accessible locations in Istanbul. You can easily reach this area by metro, metrobus, marmaray line and bus lines which are connec ted with the bridge on the Anatolian side.

Space, Atatürk Airpor t Atatürk Airpor t is a closed area which is surrounded by roads that surround the nor th and south direc tions. In addition, when the terminal buildings are removed, it can func tion as a big black hole that cannot be entered.

While there is a city texture that continues around the area and does not lose its continuity, this texture reaching the boundaries of Atatürk Airpor t strikes a wall and continues to exist outside those borders.

10

Inner Circle The area around AtatĂźrk Airpor t has a residential struc ture with respec t to its distribution of func tions. At the points where social reinforcements turn into trade, the projec tion in the city begins to become linear and concentrates on those points. When we look at the environment in general, the density of social reinforcement according to the housing texture is insuff icient .

Centralized places of Istanbul

Research

Lorem ipsum

There are two types of center in the world. The City Center is the ancient center of old building and when The Downtown concept is used instead of the center of culture, politics and finance. When we look at Istanbul, the centers become homogenous and extend linearly. This linearity is transformed into centers that are joined to each other when viewed from an upper scale. The centers of Istanbul usually function as one type of function.

The centers grow by articulating and these growing centers are interconnected to form a larger center network.

RING, located on the periphery of Atatßrk Airport, aims to define the gap in the interior and restore it to the city. The surrounding urban texture is knitted with RING and open space access is provided. Open space features : - Easy to access - Must have different open space characters. - Sustainable landscaping should be preferred. - Seasonal change should be observable. - It must be suitable for different users. - The runways determine the character of the open space. *For ecosystem balance - Biological ponds should be established. - Biological diversity should be taken care of. - The runways determine the character of the open space. Structuring features - RING must have the character of a building that will create the feeling of a boulevard in order to have a certain human density. - Nodes should be created for people to adapt more easily. These points should have a more singular and monumental character than RING. - RING should host informal events and venues. - To ensure a safe nightlife, part of the buildings must be housing. - Buildings facing the open space must relate to it. - The ground oors of the buildings should address different usage hours. - Research at the research center should support the development of the airport area. Transportation features - Some public transport lines existing in the city should be maintained to reach RING.(tram and sea transport) *For checking car use: - The speed of the cars should be reduced. - Existing car roads should be narrowed. - The places where cars can enter should be restricted. *For the development of green mobilization: - Walkable spaces should be increased. - The use of bicycles as transportation within the region should be increased. - Different types of public transport should be interconnected.

We studied RING itself in a linear order to examine the parameters of the effects. Its occupancy-clearance and greenery-hard oor were removed from the requirements of the rate.

We define the wall to restore the gap to the city. RING is associated with the city around it is varying according to factors.

Open space relations. Existing open areas are connected to each other.

Buildings. Most of the buildings that have lost their function have been newly added to RING.

Public transport. We maintain the tram line by Zeytinburnu and connect the various types of public transport that are close to the area and ensure public transport within the region.

Texture. According to tissue typology, RING also shows character changes.

Roads. We're rebuilding the existing road network to address the inaccessibility of the region.

Relations with water. It has to relate to water elements near RING.

Vezneciler Museum of Cities / 2017-2018 Fall Semester The Vezneciler region has been in the historical peninsula in the past and nowadays, it is located on the busiest axes of the city. There are many commercial, social and historical functions around it. Nearby university buildings, surroundings to visit many historical buildings and to visit perhaps the people who live here, the people who do business here would be the main visitors. The subject of the museum to be held here with this enviro ment. It is an important factor to be able to satisfy visitors when visited. This environment-related function does not only fulfill this function by making a city museum, but also enables a city like Istanbul to have a museum in this function. In the temporary exhibitions of this city museum it allows people to experience not only Istanbul but also different cities. The cities that will arrive at certain time intervals will be displayed here people who did not have the possibility to go or not experienced in the city perhaps other cities that have come to the museum will have the chance to compare with Istanbul.

A semi-open courtyard in the middle of the museum building instead of using the land and working as a logic in the middle of the field to breathe, though I aimed to leave space. We provided a vitality here by analyzing urban furniture, open exhibition niches and green areas. I created the museum masses by not using a single whole, using a low oor height and a fragmented structure. In this way the surrounding buildings formed a hierarchy with the surrounding construction without creating an overwhelming mass. I tied together my fragmented structures with a fringe that stretches towards the middle courtyard. Fringes on the ground I created a different facade structure with extending colchat. With the image of the continuity created by the colonates, I have overcome the massive image of the deaf walls.

Etiler Tourism Vocational High School and Hotel / 2016-2017 Spring Semester

The Tourism Vocational High School and Application Hotel in Istanbul Etiler was required to be redesigned by adding public spaces. Due to the shape and location of the land, all three sides had different features. Nispetiye Street is on an intense vehicle and pedestrian axis. For this reason, I positioned the hotel and culture art school buildings, which are open to public use, on the side of the land facing Nispetiye Street. I put the Tourism Vocational High School in the corner of Meydan Street and Ebulula Mardin Street. This is because these two axles are more calm and suitable for the school structure. I positioned the hotel in the corner of Nispetiye Street, close to Meydan Street side, because I saw that the density of the vehicle at Meydan Street for the hotel car entrance was more appropriate.

When designing outdoor activities, I positioned the area on Nispetiye Avenue where the pedestrian ow is intense. I designed a concert hall, urban furniture and open exhibition areas. I designed an amphitheater, a multi-purpose hall and a green area for the students to use in the center of the three buildings in the area and to provide a vitality in the center of the buildings.

Moda Semi-Olympic Public Pool And Sport Center / 2016-2017 Fall Semester

The project is a swimming pool complex located in the green and the sea. This complex includes a semi-olympic swimming pool as a focal point and a gymnasium and its additional units. Due to the high level difference between the upper and lower points of the land, the project is positioned in Moda district as if it was a part of it without interfering with the land.

While the main entrance of the building is on the coast, this entrance also serves a cafĂŠ. The building is directed towards the sea in fronts to take advantage of the wide landscape view.

Fatih Cukurbostan Seed and Public Library / 2015-2016 Spring Semester

We were asked to design a library in the area of Çukurbostan District Park in Fatih district of Istanbul. We were asked to have the library as a public library and to create a library structure that was focused on a topic that we would determine. I thought that the best way to determine the topic of my library is to investigate the history of this environment. Çukurbostan is the name given to the public among the public cisterns from the Byzantine period in Istanbul. These deep pits have been used to store drinking water for many years. The past years have filled the bottom of these cisterns with a fertile soil layer. When the open-air cisterns are not used in time, the people started to grow vegetables and fruits in the soil layer of the accumulated soil. Because these cisterns are empty and resemble deep pits and they are used as vegetables and orchards, they are called as Çukurbostan. I decided to create a seed library based on these data. When I analyzed the shapes of seeds when designing the library, I saw that their structures were discontinuous and did not show any vector features. Therefore, I chose an amorphous design when designing the building. Due to the fact that the land is less than eight meters below the road level, I have designed ramps that are connected to the ground and construction. I have made connections between masses in the structure that I designed in four mass form. Since the land is already used as a park, I applied an open space design which will continue the perception of people living in the neighborhood. I protected the historical walls of the land and the mosque in the area.

Bakirkoy Primary School and Kindergarten / 2015-2016 Fall Semester

We prepared primary school and kindergarten projects in the area of Bakırköy Anatolian High School located in Bakırköy district of Istanbul. Because there is not much historical texture around the school, we had the opportunity to move more freely while designing. When designing the school, I made a fragmented design by dividing the structure into four masses according to its functions. These masses; kindergarten, primary school, administration and common areas. When positioning the masses, I placed the elementary and kindergarten masses at the farthest points. This is due to the fact that they have different break times and they will use a common garden, and I aim to minimize noise problems and to adopt areas that are closer to them in the garden. I placed the administrative and common areas between the primary and mainstream masses. This is because these two masses will serve the other two masses at the same time. I took the entrance to the school from Mera Street, a quieter axis. In order to provide a movement in the design of the structure, I gave inclinations at angles aligned with each other on the roofs and facades.
