4 Folded Box Board with Thermoform: Selected Product
There isn’t much variety in the shape of tea boxes at the grocery store. Many of the boxes I tested have closures that do not work well. The Shop Rite Organic Tea (above) has a perforated strip that takes two to three tears to remove properly. Every time I use the product, I make a mess of it’s packaging by ripping more away than is intended.

6 Folded Box Board with Thermoform: Selected Product
After playing it safe with some conventional box designs, I started looking to the shape of a tea leaf for inspiration in the creative process. Eventually I came to my favorite concept: a box comprising two leaf-shaped halves and a tiered thermoform insert that doubles as a closure.
7
8 Folded Box Board with Thermoform: Selected Product
The final solution is a two-part exterior made with chip board and a plastic thermoform insert. Its tiered slots store the tea bags upright and its edges function as a closure for the entire box. On the back side is a die-cut with a shear film on the inside. Not only does it echo the shape of the package, but the lines created by the stacked bags alludes to the surface pattern on a leaf.

My leaf-inspired box adds some excitement to the monotonous display of the existing shelf. The issue of the messy opening in the original packaging is resolved with a snap closure of its thermoform insert. It can be stored with either front or side facing outwards.

18 Thermoformed Package: Selected Product
The leafy greens I buy at the grocery store always go soggy over night because they are rinsed and then enclosed in a ventless container.

20 Thermoformed Package: Selected Product
From the very start I knew I wanted to create a package that allowed the product to breathe. The solution of a perforated surface led to the concept of a bowl with a top that functioned as a strainer. My earlier concept was spherical, which was wasteful and impossible to ship.
21
22 Thermoformed Package: Selected Product
My final solution is a thermoformed plastic bowl with a thin perforated resealable film lid. The bottom has a circular reclosable door that exists for the purpose of watering the lettuce. The holes serve a double function of straining water and allowing the product to breathe once stored away.

My solution allows the lettuce to breathe, which prevents the leaves from going soggy as they do in the original packaging. Its other function as a strainer makes it easy to wash the product since it need not be removed from the container to do so. It may be stacked for optimization in shelving and shipping.

Gristedes is my choice for a low-end venue.

I selected hot cocoa mix as my product.

32 Merchandising Packaging: Selected Low-End Venue
Because I wanted the hot cocoa to come in straws, I looked to traditional dispensers in the design process. While I loved the idea of a twist canister (opposite page), I found that I was limited in terms of shape and ways in which it could be stored. I looked to pencil cases for inspiration in my final concept. The idea for it to open with the twist of a side dial came from my old fashioned Bingo ball dispenser.

The stand functions to prop up canister for the purpose of twisting the side dial for dispensing straws. It is also the means by which it can be put on display in its planogram.

Unlike a traditional low-end hot cocoa product that’s sold in a container or packet, my solution is unique in its use of straws to contain the mix. The cylindrical dispenser canister also sets it apart from the rectangular boxes of most of the other products that open with plastic lids.

The Chocolate Bar is my choice for a high-end venue. This chocolate shoppe sells a variety of gourmet chocolates and cocoas.

Inspired by a habit I have of putting pieces of chocolate in my cup of cocoa, I decided to enclose each serving of the mix in chocolate spheres. Because the end result reminded me of bonbons, I looked to dessert trays and platters for inspiration.
My idea for the first concept (above) was to put the cocoa spheres on a tiered planogram within a clear rounded display case. My second idea (right) involved attaching three stacked dishes to the bottom of a canister lid. Instead of leaving the spheres exposed, I wrapped each serving with decorative wrapping.

For my final solution, I placed stirrer sticks to the ends of the cocoa spheres. The end result reminded me of a lollipop so I looked to tree style thermoforms and displays for candy canes

The typical gourmet cocoas are not much different than the lowend brands in terms of package shape. My solution is unique in its presentation and function. Its reference to high-end bon bons adds some fun to the traditional mixes on the shelves.
