31 Purebred Junior Spring Show in Białka st

The Horse Stud in Białka has been the symbol of the beginning of the show season in Poland for many years. On 4-5 May “the upper crust” of Polish Arabian horse youth, which is an important indicator of the level of Polish purebred horse breeding for breeders, gathered once again in the green spring season. One-year-old, two- and three-year-old horses take part in the show. During the two days, 97 horses competed in the Białka’s ring (with 106 horses entered), including 69 fillies and 28 colts from state and private studs. To judge the show were invited: Claudia Darius from Germany, Koenraad Detailleur from Belgium, Cedes Bakker from the Netherlands and Gianmarco Aragno from Italy.

For a good start - yearling colts On Saturday, the yearling colts started as the first, competing in two Classes consisting of 6 and 8 competitors respectively. In the I A Class, colts from the Horse Stud in Janów Podlaski came first and third. Grey Agadez (Magic Magnifique - Adelita / Kahil Al Shaqab) won with a high score of 92.00 points, including one “20” for movement. Therefore, we didn’t have to wait long for the first “20”. On the other hand, his stablemate Encarino (Shiraz de LafonEneria / QR Marc) was in third place with a score of 89.17 points. Unfortunately, Agadez’s high score did not give him a medal in the championship, in which the colt came in 4th place. The second place in this Class and the bronze medal in the championship went to the privately-bred colt (Piotr Podgórny) Glorius M, the grey son of RFI Farid stallion and Ginga by Galba mare (90.83 points). In the IB Class, the pupils of the Michałów Horse Stud took the lead and divided the first three places between each other. El Maestro (Morion - El Medonia / Shanghai EA) was placed first with a score of 92.67 points. His result consisted of high marks for movement: 2 x 20 and 19.5 points. Right behind him was Porto Rico (Złoty Medal – Parmania/ Kahil Al Shaqab) with a score of 91.33 points and Złoty Owoc (Forman – Złota Olza/ Kahil Al Shaqab), who obtained 90.83 points, came third. In the championship, the distribution of forces was similar: El Maestro - gold, Porto Rico - silver. Złoty Owoc, however, was fifth in the final. One should point out that the fathers of the aforementioned colts are stallions bred also by the Horse Stud in Michałów. Because there can only be one king. The two-year-old and three-year-old colts Classes were much smaller, with 7 and 6 participants respectively. Colts from Michałów won again in both Classes. The undisputed winner of the two-year-old colts Class was the great Ferrum (Morion - Ferrmaria / El Omari), who outClassed his rivals by scoring 93.17 points. The judges awarded him a total of

five “20s”: two for type, two for head and neck, and one for movement. It was the highest score of the day. Ferrum is already an experienced participant in such shows. After all, he is the gold medalist of the last year’s shows in Białka, the champion of the National Show in Janów Podlaski, during which he also got the Best in Show title, and the European Champion of Yearling Colts. He proved his high Class in the final, where he reigned over his rivals, which translated into a unanimous decision of the judges to award him the title of Junior Champion Colt. The second place in the Class and the third in the final (bronze medal) took the sorrel Chicago (Wortex Kalliste - Calatea / Ekstern) bred and owned by Marek Kondrasiuk with a score of 90.83 points. The victory in the three-year-old colt Class went to the grey Pointer (Sahm El Arab - Palanga / Ekstern), who was awarded 91.17 points. The good result of the pupil from Michałów translated into a silver medal in the Sunday championship. The Horse Stud in Michałów will give Pointer for sale during this year’s Pride of Poland auction. The second place in the Class and fourth in the Championship went to Janów’s Pinito (EKS Alihandro - Piniata / Eden C) with a score of 90.5 points. Finally, there come yearling fillies The time has finally come for the fillies to run into the ring. The fillies Classes always arouse the greatest emotions and the greatest curiosity. In total, in the three yearling fillies Classes (IVA, IVB, IV C) we watched as many as 36 contestants. The highest score among the yearling girls was 92.17 points, and it belonged to the bay El Mariella (Morion - El Marina / Ganges) bred and owned by the Horse Stud in Michałów. This score gave her victory in the Class (IVC) and first place in the Championship. Thus, another gold medal went to Michałów. Second in this Class and third (bronze) in the Championship came her stablemate Emiremia (Morion - Emblema / Chimeryk), who scored 91.67 points. The silver medal went to the winner of the IVA Class - the filly Bogini Róż PA (Kahil Al Shaqab - Blac Rose / Abyad AA) bred and owned by the Dąbrówka Horse Stud (PPH Parys) with 91.83 points. Her note consisted of

Private breeding horses were awarded 3 medals: 2 bronze and one silver. The highest marks for movement, i.e. a set of “20” (3x20), went to the two-year-old filly Elsa Black Lady (Wadee Al Shaqab - El Endila / Justify) bred and owned by Anna Janas - Naze. Unfortunately, the Horse Stud in Janów Podlaski and the Horse Stud in Białka didn’t win any medals. However, this is just the beginning of the Arabian horses’ competition in the show rings this season, and there may still be many surprises. q

Pietrasanta L’arte del Cavallo by Giorgia Mauri z photos by Sunny

The event L’Arte del Cavallo (the Art of Horses) was at its twentieth edition and, as you can read in the preface by Mayor Giovannetti, “well represents our desire to tell the whole world that Pietrasanta and Versilia are once again welcoming, hospitable and above all safe places.” After last year’s stop, the Versilia Park reopened its doors to this event in which as many as 80 horses from all over the world participated. The artwork signed by sculptor Antonio Signorini accompanied the poster of the initiative, giving even greater value to the setting in which the show was held. The event also served as a prologue to the rich season that the Fondazione Versilia is preparing for the entire summer, with open-air shows in the large theater, cultural encounters with great personalities from the worlds of culture, journalism, science and politics, and activities dedicated to children. Thanks to Mayor Giovannetti, to the organizer Luciano Borzonasca and to the Versilia Foundation we were able

to attend a B-class show that was very well attended both by the breeders who showed their horses and by the public who flocked to admire the grace of the magnificent creatures present, in the highest expression of their beauty that is realized through the harmony and elegance of their forms. Tutto Arabi was the mediapartner of the event and Arabian Essence took care of the streaming. To judge the beauty of these horses were invited Cristian Moschini (Italy), Michaela Weidner (Germany), Gedeon Reisel (The Netherland) and Francesco Santoro (Italy). housands of pages would be needed to talk about the beauties to be found in Campania. Just to mention one: aples, its gulf, the islands, Vesuvius, Pompei and Ottaviano. Here we stopped and let me describe this town in a few lines. In Roman times, Ottaviano was a village ofhouses within a vast estate belonging to the family ofEmperor Augustus.

The territory of Ottaviano has always had a strategicmilitary importance as from its dominant hillside position it could control the Via Popilia (Via Capua - Regium). It was the scene of several battles, starting in 73 B. C. where Spartacus defeated Gaius Glabro. In 1933, on the bimillennium of Octavian Augustus, the name of the city was definitively confirmed as Ottaviano. In the following years, the city has been named after princes, dukes and historical figures such as Francesco de Medici, Armando Diaz, the Gonzaga family and many others.

But let's get back to the present day, or rather let's go to 12th and 13th June, when the second edition ofthe Vesuvius Trophy was held in this splendid city. An event that encompasses three events: the first, the most eagerly awaited by breeders, is the ECAHO-affiliated C ational show. The second one was the Straight Egyptian Event and last but not least this year the open day ofthe breeding farm owned by Mr Donato Prisco, Patron of the initiative and of the organisation ofthis great event, which was very awaited. The Prisco Family, for this 2021 edition, has demonstrated the ability to manage a great event. They have been invited to judge the ational show Mrs. Claudia Darius (Germany), Mrs. Maria Ferraroni (Italy), Mr. Eric Gear (France), Mr. Hassan Al Mannai (Qatar) and Dr. Gianmarco Aragno (Italy). For the Egyptian Event three other world class people, both

as judges and breeders. Mrs. Kathleen Ohlsson from Sweden, Mrs. Antonia Bautista from Spain and Mr. Klaus Beste from Germany. For both shows Dr. Laura Mascagna was Ring Master, and the task ofD. C. was entrusted to Mrs. Barbara Raso and Dr. Vet. Giampaolo Teobaldelli. A highly professional and experienced staff, totally managed by Mr. Roberto Ceccaroni, a worthy ambassador and a great help to the host Mr. Donato Prisco. I would like to thank him and the entire Prisco family for their gracious hospitality and my sincerest compliments for organising such a high level show. The presence of the Mayor of Ottaviano, Dr. Luca Capasso, made the event even more prestigious. On Saturday 12th, at the end of the show, the most interesting event took place, the "PRISCO ARABIA S" open day. The pearls of the Prisco Arabians paraded under the spotlight in the ring. The breeding farm boasts straight

Egyptian and pure Arabians. The warm voice of ico Belloni was able to perfectly describe the beauty and elegance of each subject. They were masterfully presented by a young and emerging handler, Mr. Giuseppe Baragiani, who you will soon hear about at European events. In order to better understand the level oforganisation ofthe shows, I would like to point out that, as for the most important European and world events, here in the heart of the city of Ottaviano no one and nothing was overlooked. The photographs were taken by two of the best professional photographers in the sector: Mr. Alessio Azzali and Mr. Simone Bergamaschi. The streaming was provided by Arabian Essence. In addition, the wonderful music by Mrs. Halizee Ht have accompanied the presentation. ow I leave you enjoying the pictures of the medals and their scores.

Giovanni Messinese has always been passionate about horses and was born in Agrigento in 1986. Son of a professional photographer, he grew up with a passion for photography and with a colt given to him by his father when he was 4 years old. At the age of 13 he officially began his career as a photographer of ceremonies and events. In 2010 he is invited to take pictures at an important horse show in Sicily. Thanks to the positive feedback Giovanni realised that his passion for photography and horses could coexist in a single project. In 2011 he started to be invited as the official photographer to many equestrian shows, thus starting his professional path, following Regional and National shows and then focusing on Arabian Horses. In 2018, after winning several awards, his photos are published in important magazines specialized in Arabian horses including the magazine Tutto Arabi, that this year celebrates 24 years of activity, and Arabian Horse Magazine. The support by important Italian publishers allowed him to become internationally well-known. In 2019 he was credited as the official photographer for Tutto Arabi magazine at Kalba Show in UAE and other international shows where he was appreciated for the great quality of his work. in his work. As he told us: “A good photograph is more than a beautiful image; it encompasses a wide range of emotions that tell the whole story of a moment frozen in time”. The experience of studio, reportage and fashion photography and the in-depth experience gained over the years, which he then brought back to the equestrian world, gave Giovanni a different quality, allowing him to stand out in the industry thanks to the personal touch he manages to give to each of his shots and the use of specific techniques that make him unique and recognisable. The warmth of the perfectly balanced light creates unprecedented shapes and contrasts and viewers can perceive the full life force of the Arabian horse in a new way. Horses arouse passion, inspire respect and have influenced human history unlike any other animal. These unique creatures represent strength, pride and beauty. Giovanni Messinese explores all this and much more in his work. Through his images he conveys the emotions of a particular moment in time, skilfully captured by his camera. Today Giovanni Messinese with his projects continues to show animals in all their splendour, in particular Arabian horses which have always been his greatest passion. During the weekend of 8th and 9th May was held the International C show organized for many years by Mr. Antonio Culcasi, this year helped by his daughter Federica, returned from abroad after 5 years. In spite of the name always brings back as locality Trapani, the show was held in a modern equestrian center, around 30 km from the city. The “Pietra dei Fiori Equestrian Center” is located in Buseto Palizzolo, an area of Sicily totally cultivated with vineyards. The surrounding hills are of a bright green, not usual for a land burnt by the sun. Here the panorama is nothing short of amazing. The blue sky typical of the island was the frame of the two days of the show and a light breeze made our stay even more pleasant. The event was followed by a large audience and was streamed by a very professional local station WWW.ARABIANHORSECUP.IT where you can also find both the video of the show and the scores for each horse. The international jury was formed by: from Qatar Mr. Hassan Al-Mannai, from the Netherlands Mrs. Paola Bohmer, from France Mr. Daniel Souppat and finally our most experienced judge Dr. Gianmarco Aragno. In the arena the ring master was Mr. Mario Bonomi and

the disciplinary commission by Mr. Marco Capelli and Mr. Roberto Ceccaroni. Speaker and voice of the days was Mrs. Vittoria Abbenate. The equestrian center is certainly very well equipped and prepared for each type of event, has very large boxes for horses, stands for the public and a luxurious restaurant. What is sad is to see that an international show with an equally professional jury had only about sixty horses registered. Especially in a wonderful location like this. It is now clear that in these two years of pandemic the life of all of us has changed, but we cannot allow ourselves to weaken even more. Let’s take advantage of the opportunities, show the world your horses, participate actively by helping each other. Sicily is a land of Arab horses, it has a history of Berber horses and today is the region with the largest number of horses in Italy. I have seen a remarkable growth in breeding in Sicily and I think that with some effort we can soon see some subjects worthy of participating abroad in major categories shows. However, I am always happy to attend horse events in Sicily, great food, great horses and above all the warmth and kindness of people which here is unique. On May 8th and 9th, Sicily hosted two events for Arab horses affiliated with ANICA, just a few kilometers apart. In Buseto Palizzolo, in the province of Trapani, the International Morphology Show of class C and in Partinico, in the province of Palermo, the qualifying stage of the Horse Event Sicily. The latter with a prize money of about 10,500.00 euros provided by MiPAAF and 1,800.00 euros (ANICA) to be divided between the top 3 classified in the 3 categories. The qualified horses will compete in Punta Ala in the final, where the prize money will amount to 24,000.00 euros. Even though Tutto Arabi is not a magazine specialized in mounted

races, we, the editorial staff, did not miss the opportunity to be present with our magazine at the event. We also took the opportunity to have a chat about the two worlds, Morphology and Mounted, with Engineer Pier Luigi Grassi, an important MIPAAF inspector. One world is undoubtedly an adjuvant to the other, as not all Arabian horses have the same characteristics to perform certain disciplines. The show horse must be beautiful, charismatic, must have a standard that judges appreciate. The dressage horse must have the graceful movement of a dancer. scared even on a rough course that the horse often never knows. He is the horse that over the centuries has led men through the paths of the world. The race was held in several categories: Debutants over a minimum of 20 to a maximum of 30 Km. Cen/A min. 40 max 60 Km and finally the most challenging stage CEN/B from 80 min to 99 Km maximum.

The spirit that you breathe is the same as that of the morphology shows because those who have the passion or as they often say “the disease” for purebred Arabian horses have in the blood the competitivity and the desire to raise the Champion. We also interviewed the organizer of this event Mr. Salvatore Bagliesi and we did it in the club house of the “Country House Western A.s.d.” from where the stages started.

The two worlds of the purebred Arabian horse and the two Sicilian events The world of morphology and the world of endurance really seem to be two worlds that travel on parallel lines, two worlds that can never meet. Different workouts, different nutrition, different demands from the trainer. Surely they are different worlds, but what matters and what interests fans, breeders and all those who live this passion is that what unites the two disciplines and the people who are part of it is the Arabian Thoroughbred, the true protagonist of both worlds, the horse par excellence, the horse that comes from our farms, thanks to breeders who with many sacrifices share the same passion and aim to create a good horse or even a champion! I am convinced that the adult horses present at the morphology show in Buseto Palizzolo, well trained, could easily compete in the endurance race with those present in Partinico.

Tutto Arabi: Tell us about Endurance in Sicily. Salvatore Bagliesi: In recent years we have certainly seen a greater attention to the care of the horse, especially I feel I can say that breeders have understood what is the important task entrusted to them. From birth, the foal is cared for in such a way as to be ready for the task to which it will be entrusted. In the case of Endurance, progress is visible, and I think you will have realized this during the event last May 8/9. Endurance, as a discipline, is gaining more and more importance in our region, considering that it can bring a state of well-being for the animal in an almost brotherly relationship with rider and breeder. From these premises, it seems right to think that everything done can be qualitatively improved. TA: What is the path you have designed? SB: In the study of the route faced by the participants in the “Horse Event Sicily”, the first concern was to ensure, if I may use this term, the comfort of the horse. Precisely for this reason, most of the route has involved a flat area, with some sandy stretches. The choice, as I said, was not random, and took into account the particular morphology of our territory. As a result of all this, I would like to underline that only one of the 30 participants had any problems with their pace. This seems to me to be a fact of absolute

importance, confirmed by the fact that almost all the horses finished the trial in perfect physical condition. TA: What does the endurance world look like? Do the riders help each other or is it pure competition? SB: This is a complex question that deserves an in-depth answer. As in all sporting disciplines, it is clear that not all participants are based on De Coubertin’s principle “The important thing is to participate”, however, Endurance has a unique quality, I believe, that is, it supports a relationship that goes beyond the simple competitive aspect, it allows a familiarization between all components (riders, breeders, organizers). It is necessary to focus on a greater cohesion, in order to be able to structure an extremely valid calendar, which allows all or almost all fans and interested Sicilians to be present. Under this aspect the situation is slowly but steadily improving. The route still has some small unforeseen, but I am sure that with the work and the collaboration of all, the Sicilian Endurance universe will enjoy a great future. Finally I would like to take advantage of the space granted to thank the Mipaaf, the Anica and the Aiace for the necessary support received. If the event has obtained a good success, it is owed also to them.

VETERINARY Close your eyes for a moment and try to picture the image of a horse. For many of us this conjures up an animal in the middle of a large meadow (the background depends on the type of riding…), grazing grass, alert but calm. This image of the horse in the wild reflects two key characteristics: the need for space and the habit of eating grass. In our studs, although life is very different from that in the open air, some basic conditions should be maintained, first of all the need for horses to eat if not grass, other fibrous food especially hay. Hay ensures that the intestine of our friend functions correctly and is also an important source of nutrients. But which hay should you choose? How do you select it? What do you replace it with? How much should you give your horse? Here are some indications on how to use a widely used but much neglected food.

HAYS AND MEALS

What is the ultimate goal of a nutritionist? It is simple, it is that of providing a well balanced meal that contains all the nutrients a horse needs to live and breed. In order to achieve this, variable quantities of several foods are used, each of which has a specific function. The combination of the different foods creates a balance that goes beyond the composition of each ingredient. That is why, as the saying goes, there are balanced MEALS, rather than perfect foods. In the specific case of the horse, only the “complete” fodder can be given on their own and will meet all the nutritional requirements, but these are compound foods. Milk is the only food that can be provided on its own, albeit for a very short time. For these reasons, the feeding of our animals usually consists of several foods, especially fodder (hay, grass…) and concentrates (barley, oats…). This leads us to a very important concept: the fodder must be chosen so that it can fill the nutrition gaps left by hay, and vice versa. Therefore, there are no types of hay that can balance all the meals, in the same way that not all the types of fodder can support any type of hays. A practical example will serve to clarify this further: alfalfa hay, widely used for feeding Quarter Horses, is rich in calcium and proteins, much more than other types traditionally used. Consequently, meals based on this type of hay include fodder that is low in proteins. That same fodder, if used with other types of hay, give poor results, because the food is not balanced. On the contrary, rich fodder, formulated to make up for poor-quality hay, will not be useful if provided together with alfalfa hay, indeed they can cause fermentation in the intestine and, in the worst cases, colic, diarrhea and even laminitis. In these cases, the cause of the problem is not the food in itself, but its improper use.

WHICH TYPE OF HAY?

The most common type of hay to be found in our studs is “hay from first-crop polyphyte meadow”. Let us briefly see what this means. u First of all, hay is grass cut at a specific growing stage (usually the florescence) left to dry in fields according to suitable drying methods, then gathered and taken to a shed in bigger or smaller prism-sized stacks or cylinder-shaped bales. u A polyphyte meadow is the one on which several types of grass can be found. More specifically, you could find grass belonging to several families, mainly Graminaceae and legumes. u First crop denotes the grass sickled in May (this hay is also called May hay), when the meadows are flourishing and there is a large percentage of graminaceae. In subsequent crops (usually August and September) the percentage of legumes increases and, with them, the quantity of proteins. The percentage of fibers, instead, decreases. The hay described above is rich in fibers, poor in proteins and calcium but horses love it. As this is by far the most popular type of hay, it is used as a reference for many types of Italian fodder, developed to make up for its wants. You can also find fodder that is ideal for being given together with alfalfa hay, hence not suitable for feeding horses together with polyphyte meadow hay. As we said before, no type of hay is suitable for every occasion. The best advice we can give is not to change hay frequently and/or suddenly: this certainly causes problems because the microorganisms in the horse’s intestines are “creatures of

habit” so to speak, and do not like regular changes. A second piece of advice is to give preference to healthy rather than rich hay. Poor hay can represent the basis for a correct nutrition, all you need to do is add a good fodder; on the contrary, unhealthy hay (for example full of dust or mold) will always create problems.

Pros and cons in brief

It is not easy to correctly evaluate hay without the support of an analysis laboratory. However, you can get some good indications also without the need for special equipment. Color, for example, gives us an idea of its preservation status. Fresh hay preserves the green color of chlorophyll, which tends towards yellow over time (even inside the bales of any type). So you should use fresh hay. A grayish coloring is a sign of bad preservation, and the same can be said if you notice brown or black spots. If there are white spots, it means that there is mold. The smell is also important, as fresh hay has a typical fragrant aroma, whereas alfalfa hay of better quality almost always smells like tobacco. On the other end of the scale, it is easy to detect the smell of mold. But beware of allergies! The fungus spores that can be found in hay, which are responsible for chronic obstructive bronchitis (also known as heaves) in our horses, can cause rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis in humans: it happened to me several times, I smelled a moldy hay and my eyes immediately puffed up, I started to sneeze while the people around me were smiling ironically. There are also other characteristics that can be detected. Dusty or soiled hays, if shaken, reveal their content in the form of a cloud of various colors; hay containing ditch grass can often cut because of the sharp edges of the grass itself; hay that is too dry, finally, tends to fray and horses do not like it. In short: avoid hays that have been somehow altered, i.e. moldy, dusty, old or too dry. Give preference to fresh and fragrant hay. Simple, isn’t it? And yet this is often overlooked in the stables when it is time to feed horses with hay. Hay is just dumped in the boxes almost without looking at it, with the result that some unlucky animal might get uneatable food, due to negligence. Alfalfa hay is the most dangerous in this sense, because it is often moldy but mold is not evenly spread. In the same lot you might find perfect bales and dangerous ones, which should obviously be removed. Incidentally, moldy hay (and straw) cannot even be used as bedding, because it

VETERINARY might trigger extremely serious respiratory allergies (chronic obstructive bronchitis) in predisposed animals, as we said before.

Hobson’s choice?

If hay has got so many defects, why not replace it? Good idea. There are four options. u First option. If a meadow is available, for most part of the year you can use the grass of good grazing land. It is certainly richer than hay, does not usually have problems and makes you save on concentrate. This solution is viable only if the land is big enough. In Italy, you often have to use small paddocks just to aid the moving of the horses, and grass has no real importance from a nutritional point of view. u Second option. Use a complete fodder, which is used indoors and the nutrients are balanced. This option is ok in theory, but in practice it is better to have some straw available, in order to increase the daily food consumption timings. Eating a diet consisting entirely of pelleted feed takes much less time (digesting hay requires about 40 minutes for each kg, whereas digesting pelleted feeds, cereals and other feeds only takes 10 minutes). This leads to more free time and so it might generate the potential risk of boredom. As a result the horse

could develop cribbing or other ‘spooky’ behavior. u Third option: use ensiled foodstuffs. On the market you can find pre-dried ensiled grass for horses. This is usually without mold and their composition is stable enough, they are good products but not yet widely used, also because their cost is far higher than hay. Their use, however, requires a total review of the food quantity to be given. u Fourth option: use artificially dried and cut-up grass. There are various types, mainly coming from alfalfa, sometimes enriched with other products such as molasses. This is excellent food, richer than hay, expensive but with a stable composition for which we can draw the same conclusion as before: they shorten consumption times and require a total review of the food quantity.

How much hay?

Luckily for us, the horse self-regulates on the quantity of hay to consume. Generally, diets that are poor in hay are better suited for sport horses, and this for various reasons. But in order to avoid any problem, they must have access to a minimum of 4-5 kg of hay a day. Competition horses can eat up to 7 kg, divided into at least two meals. Milking mares can need 9 kg and more. q

It is making known to the world the stories of many women of Arabian horses that we are used to seeing in the spotlight of the most important international shows but that not everyone knows personally and whose stories, beginnings, the spark from which it all began, we do not know. Or women we know little about because they work in the fields of study and research, a fundamental sector for breeding but less visible in the show world. My name is Claudia Brugman. I am 51 years old, born and raised in Holland of Dutch and Indonesian descent. Nowadays I am living my dream as a passionate Arabian horse breeder in Belgium. My love for horses began ever since I could walk by myself. We lived in green acres surrounded by ponies (from Shetland and Wales) as well as horses like for instance Frysians and Icelandic horses. There also were many schools for horse riding which I frequently visited with my brothers and sisters. Furthermore we spent a lot of time at the museum “Paleis het Loo”, famous for its equestrian sports. The first time I ever laid eyes on an Arabian horse, my love changed into a true passion. I could see so many different capacities united in just one horse. To me they looked so refined yet strong as well as stubborn and fiery but nevertheless very approachable.

From that moment on I was convinced that when William Shakespeare wrote “a horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse”, he must have been referring to an Arabian horse. It had to be! As for me, I never experienced any big obstacles or major difficulties as a woman in any business so ever or in particular the Arabian Horse world. There is also the circumstance that we, all the participants in this small community, share the same passion. However, on a global level I realize the struggle of so many women before me and the time it takes to have human rights legislated. Nevertheless I am convinced that patience and dedication go a long way. Because, no matter your capacities or qualities, you will always be considered a newbie in whatever community you enter. My experience is that you can achieve anything you want in life if you have the courage to dream it, the intelligence to make a realistic plan and the will to see the plan through the end.

My name is Lætitia-Marie de Belsunze d’Arenberg, married to Leopond Franz Habsburg-Lothringen, I have two children and five grandchildren. I have dual nationality; French-Austrian, although I live in Montevideo, Uruguay since 1951. From a very young age (since I was 13 or 14 years old) I work tirelessly in different charitable works that I consider fundamental pillars of our society. At the age of 40, I started my professional projects in Uruguay in two areas: the automotive industry and the agroindustry. Since I was born, I’ve been in contact with nature, my family has been linked to the cultivation of the land and everything that revolves around it for many generations. At the age of 15 I had the privilege of being invited by one of my best friends at the time, a Moroccan Princess, to his father’s farm. That’s where I had my first interaction with the Arabian horses and I must say: it was love at first sight; I’d never seen horses more beautiful and more perfect than the Arabians. Truth to be told, I found very few obstacles in the Arabian horses’ environment. The beginnings were perhaps not as smooth as I expected – since the Uruguayan equestrian culture and scene leans towards the Criollo horses, therefore, it wasn’t easy to concretize the project of Las Rosas-Arabians. I was extremely fortunate to find two key people in the development of my project: Roberto Serventi, Director at Estancia Las Rosas, who worked for

several years with Federico Zichy-Thyssen, and a very talented young woman, Olivia Strauch, who from a very young age dreamed and knew that she wanted to devote her energy to empowering this breed. I must thank God for having them in my team at Las Rosas, they are a fundamental stone, I truly believe that this teamwork formula was the great springboard to get me where I am today and positioning the Arabians LR both nationally and internationally. When it comes to a project there are many different stages: firstly, you dream of it, you fantasize with the idea, it floats in your mind vaguely but firmly. When you dream becomes a hundred percent clear you start investigating thoroughly on the subject, always in the most thorough way. One must also bear in mind that dreams of this kind are long-term, so we must go slowly, with prudence, step by step, keeping the final objective clear, but also considering short-, medium- and longterm milestones. There will be many different paths to the same result; trial and error is what will help one achieve excellence and perfection. It is just as a work of art... one invests time, energy, love and tenacity in the pursuit of perfection... And sometimes you even feel that “the work of art” is not finished yet! It’s a long way, but never stop dreaming as it’s a path of happiness, tears, frustrations and rewards, but I can asure you: if the dream is deeply attached in your mind, you will have it; visualize things and they will happen.

My name is Olivia Strauch, I was born in Uruguay and have been the manager of the Arabian horse division at Estancia Las Rosas (Florida, Uruguay) for the last 17 years. Animal lover since I was a kid, my grand mother was a big influence transmitting her passion for horses, specially the Arabian horse. I remember sitting with her in a small tv room were she displayed all this arabian horse magazines, and posters and books, telling me all kind of stories and legends which made me curious and interested about the breed. Since I can remember I dreamed of approaching this world and learning everything about these horses. Thanks to a friend, I worked a couple of years as a secretary at the uruguayan breeders association and from there it was one friend and then the other who opened doors and gave me opportunities to move forward. The years at Guzzo Arabian Training defined my future, while travelling the world and learning skills that would lead me to develop a lifestyle and get involved in the project I am till today. With effort, dedication and talent (and a bit of screaming lol) we women have conquered spaces that were reserved for men in the past, but I think it´s about time to finish with stupid revolutions and accept we are different, and be proud to be who we are, with our capacities and also our limitations.

At the beginning, my dream was to become a “top trainer”, and get to show halter horses around the world, but at some point I realized I would never be capable of being “as good as the boys” and desisted from it. Though in other equestrian disciplines we can see woman doing it at it´s best, we have to recon we will never play football as good, or tennis or show halter horses as good. What to do? Accept it and find other things that we can be great at! When I was first recommened by a friend for the job at Las Rosas, the first reaction of the director was “NO”, “we never had a woman working here” “it will be disruptive” “nobody will respect a 23 year old girl as the boss”, but finally accepted to “make a try” and here I am… and I have to say I never had any trouble, I quickly made myself part of the team, working back to back and gaining their respect. The first thing is to have a very clear goal or aim. After you have defined this, start working for it and never never stop. The inspiration, the method, the skills, and (very important) the people who will share this with you and help you achieve things, will be attracted to you be this “force”. I think woman to admire or to have as inspiration should be those who are succesful in a project or business but managed to build and take care of a family at the same time as well.

My name is Verena Heiss, I´m 41 years old and live in Austria. During the day I work for a big concern in the office but after work I spend every free minute with my horses and I live my big dream as an owner, breeder and an enthusiast of Arabian horses. Actually I’ve been addicted to horses my whole life, but I found my love to the Arabian horse at the age of 13. I was mesmerized about these animals that decided to spent all my pocket money on magazines, books, videotapes,…. to learn everything about these wonderful horses. In 1999 the time has come and I was able to buy my first Arab. It should be a two week old colt named Khen Saabis Effendi. With this horse I got to know the reality of the Arab scene. And through him, I was able to learn everything about the show and breeding scene. Of course, I quickly realized that he wasn’t a horse for big shows. But I was able to learn so much from him, attended show seminars, amateur shows, and later I went to equestrian sports with him and so I was able to develop constantly. Another very important point, in my opinion, is

visiting many stud farms - whether large or small, is secondary. Simply to study the variety and the different type of the Arabian horses and to get a vision for your own breeding. In 2002 I took the opportunity to travel to California for a few weeks to learn even more at the world-famous OmElArab International stud. Grooming, halter training, presentation and so on. I just wanted to learn everything about this business. For me the most important factor as a breeder is seeing the reality, being self-critical and believing in what you are doing. This is the only way to continuously develop and increase the level of your own breeding. In my opinion, this is a major deficit that so many new breeders bring with them by not seeing or wanting to see the faults of their own horses and then they give up and disappear from the scene after many unsuccessful and frustrated years. But for me the most important thing is that we don´t stop to love and appreciate this marvellous animals and have fun with them!! It happens too often they were only seen as trophies.

As a woman in this amazing Arabian horse world, I think we are able to have a distinctive eye towards life, and being surrounded by the horses and nature is the best way to recharge our energy and keep our strength to accomplish our goals and refresh our souls. Arabian horses resemble the feminine spirit. They show strength and power, and at the same time can show elegance, transmit peace, calmness and love. It is really satisfying to get to connect with such a special and sensitive animal.

My passion for Arabian horses started at a very young age and has been strengthened over the past year. I grew up among Arabian horses, spending time at our farm and going to exhibitions with my family all around Brazil and the USA. I also had the amazing experience of working for a semester at the Brazilian Horse Breeders Association (ABCCA). More recently, during the pandemic, Haras JM and our farm, where it is located, became my second home. I have had the opportunity to live among the horses with my four kids, husband, and family for almost a year now. I can say that in some way, the horses’ energy, calmness and free spirit have helped me go through this tough and uncertain time.

My name is Ewa Imielska-Hebda and I come from Poland. I am a photographer. Sometimes I photograph a show jumping, dressage, etc, but my heart truly belongs to Arabian horses. World of Arabian horse always was and still is a big part of my life and Arabian horses has been present in it since I remember. At the beginning I was inspired by Zofia Raczkowska`s amazing photographs and thanks to her work I deepened my passion for those horses. Later I had a possibility to work with Arabian horses as a Raider in one of the best racing stable in Poland and it gave me a better understanding of their true nature. Finally it gave me a complete image of an arabian horse and there is no other such a breed. For me arabian horses were no longer only a beautiful horses from a picture – they were much more than that – with their appearance, charisma, ambidexterity, responsiveness and courage. On that point I had an opportunity to photograph those horses, to look at them through the lens. And my purpose was to capture that perfect moment, when all these unique qualities of the Arabian

horses are in one place and time. It was a first step on my way to a current place. I never notice that my gender is an obstacle in society of Arabian horses. There are lots of very talented women in Arabian horse business in every area - as photographers, grooms, trainers, breeders, judges, managers. My path was delineated by an admirable women including Anna Janas-Naze - owner of Black Lady Arabians Stud, Monika Luft - owner on L-Arabians Stud and editorial of PolskieAraby.com. Years ago, at the beginning they trusted my skills and my vision of Arabian horse. I strongly believe that we can achieve anything we want, anything we dream about as long as we find in ourselves enough strenght, courage, passion and determination. If we are truthful, loyal and courageous we will meet the right people and friends on your way which can help us to pursue our goals and dreams, people which share the same passion, dreams and vision. They give us inspiration and energy to move forward.

SPECIAL My name is Ilona Bax and I am a professional rider and breeder based in the South of the Netherlands. My dream to work with horses started early and therefore I started working from a very young age, at stables for International Grandprix riders. This is where I had the privilege of working with exceptional women and men, who helped in the formation of my character, as a professional and a person. But my first inspiration came from my mother, Marion. She built a foundation of values and modeled consistency, determination, compassion, integrity and persistance. I worked my way up as a rider until in 2006 my fire for the Arabian was ignited. It was then I got to train an Arabian stallion and altough he was definitely not an easy horse he would do anything for me. His heart was huge and fierce in a way I hadn’t expierenced before with other breeds. People told me many times I was wasting my talent and should ride “normal dressage horses” but I couldn’t disagree more… What I saw was an opportunity to stand out from the crowd, as there are dozens of warmblood riders, but not many high level Arabian riders. So I stuck to my plan and proved them wrong by winning numerous prizes and titles in many disciplines, with different horses, mainly stallions. All these wins such as 4 times Dutch National Champion, Gold European Champion and 2 times European reserve Champion Ridden Class, 6 times top 5 All Nations Cup Aachen had earned us even a Sport Award by the ECAHO. I threw myself into developing a deep understanding of this breed, and over the years have perfected my technique in training them. I’m a big believer in lifelong learning and horses are the best teachers! My partner, Matt, and I have now established our own facility called Just Arabians where we train and

sell horses for clients and ourselves from all over the world. Beside riding Arabians I am chasing up a new ambition and dream of breeding the Arabian horse. This year we got our first foals off the ground. I think many people, when they meet me, often tell me, “Wow, your life is amazing! . You’re so lucky!” But the truth is there was no luck involved. I created this life myself and had to be very determined and patient. Also it takes lot of sacrifices that people don’t see. Horses to me are not a tool or device for ego and money. I give myself a 100% 7 days a week, every hour of the day to keep them happy, sometimes to the detriment of my own health. That is why it is so extremely important to me to have my partner and family, who are my biggest cheerleaders, supporting me every step of the way. So yes… I am very lucky… Lucky to have found such a drive and passion in my life, and to be able to share this with the people I love the most. I don’t necessarily feel that I have expierenced any obstacles with being a woman standing in the way of my ambitions. However, as we all know horses bring up emotions and in order to deal with many different types of people in society I did find out that you don’t only need horse skills, but also people skills. In order to succeed in any business or dream it is absolutely essential that you have a positive mental attitude in every aspect of life. Stay focused and set goals. A goal is a dream with a deadline that is measurable, identifiable, obtainable and specific. I hope my story and expierences can be an inspiration for the next generation of young woman and that if they ever get told they can’t or they shouldn’t they can and they will!

It is my pleasure and honor to participate in Tutto Arabi - We Women Project, and I am very thankful to Mrs. Giorgia Mauri for this precious chance. My name is Saria Almarzook, born in Syria and living currently in Berlin, Germany. I have been raised close to the Syrian Desert, by Euphrates river bank, where I met for the first time three Arabian fillies playing around their mothers. From that time on, I had the fillies always in my dreams, and their images are still vivid in my mind! I completed my PhD in Molecular Genetics of Arabian Horses in 2018 at Humboldt University Berlin. The doctoral thesis was a mixture of historical and laboratory research on over 200 Arabian horse samples (mainly from Syria with an extension of DNA frequencies from USA) and included the following topics: Biodiversity of the Arabian horses genetic pool SNPchip and a set microsatellites, Diversity of the Hypervariable region-1 of the equine mitochondrial DNA in three of the most important Arabian horse strains, in addition to a study of the candidate genes that are potentially involved/responsible for the endurance performance of Arabian horses. Currently, I am involved in a research on the genetic diversity of the Y chromosome of Arabian horses with the Veterinary University of Vienna. Recently, I got the honor to be a visiting researcher and participant in a project on whole mitochondrial genome at the University of Agriculture in Krakow. Practically, I worked in research filed for 14 years. I am currently working as a university associate lecturer and a translator in Berlin/Germany. I have a book entitled “Biodiversity of Arabian Horses”, and some publications in revised journals. Recently, I translated a very interesting book about horses from German into Arabic. As an equine researcher in both, Syria and Germany, I always had the chance to go deeper in the genomic world. But this was not always satisfying! Due to metaphorical dimension of Arabian horses in the minds of Orientals (mainly Middle Eastern people like me) makes it extremely

difficult to be convinced only with laboratory results. Therefore, I had to delve deeper into the history of Arabian horses, relevant literature and arts, traditional crafts, poetry and stories, the Arabic oral and intangible heritage in order to define and interpret the relationship between Arabs and their Arabian horses which were represented in the genetic pool of the samples! This sounds romantic, I know, but this is the truth. Genetic research of Arabian horses, which suffers limitation, encouraged me to complete my postgraduate studies in this field and led me to the gate of knowledge. But I’m still at the gate, and there’s still a lot to learn and to do. I have never owned an Arabian horse before, but my family`s household had access to the surrounding neighbours who were hosting and raising Arabian horses, and I was always roaming close to them. My interest in the world of horses grew in Syria in the late nineties, with the encouragement of my “science-loving family”. At that time, my focus was mainly on reading historical and genealogical books, as well as Arabic poetry that described the Arabian horse’s features and considered it as “living legend” of the desert. I also found equine tales and narratives from the Bedouins. Despite that, I noticed that there were many gaps and absence of a lot of vital information that I was looking for at that time in the Arabian libraries. I could not find anything to satisfy my curiosity and answer my questions, so I turned to what was available to me from the foreign books and English animal periodicals which were arriving in Lebanon basically. That was before the internet revolution! The “Horses and Camels” module, during the third year of my bachelor, was a huge, dry and very difficult module, which suffered shortage in updated information, in addition to a total absence of the practical side. I passed the exam with somehow “acceptable” grade. However, I insisted to continue digging in this field. I cannot say that the road of my research in Syria was paved and flowers grow on it. I experiences very difficult times

and I was mostly ignored and sometimes injured. A young woman in equine research was a joke in Syria. I ignored all obstacles and challenges, and I kept collecting my samples and learning slowly, but continuously. Besides of being a researcher at the national commission of biotechnology, I was editor-in-chief of the first Syrian Arabian horse’s magazine, whose name was “awlad alreeh” which means “sons of the wind” published in both Arabic and English, for about two years. But the project and the magazine stopped due to war and lack of funding. “Do not work unless you feel that your work will lead to a revolution,” my father used to say, and I think it was said by the writer and thinker Joseph Beuys. For private reasons, not necessary to be mentioned here, I considered my study was the starting point for my own revolution. Generally speaking, as a young scientist and researcher woman, I am assigned to a group of women who make up less than 30% of the scientific research workers in the world, who publish, receive salaries and develop less than their “male colleagues”, according to a study of UNESCO in 2018. In wars, conditions are changing according to requirements, creating new needs in the labor markets. Studies show that the two world wars changed the fate of many survivors - especially women - in the field of work, which resulted in major economic changes that contributed to a dramatic change in their lives. This is what happened also to women of my home country. The war changed my life. I consider myself fortunate to be one of the lucky survivors and who could join the cohort of women equine researchers, inspired by many of them, like Monika Reissmann, Jessica Peterson, Barbara Wallner and Monika Stefaniuk (taking into account the titles). Determination and patience are important for any success. I started my master’s study in 2007 in Berlin, and I decided to begin by delving into the genetics of horses. At that time, I collected 75 samples from

three Arabian horses’ strains, and decided to study the diversity of their genetic pool. The results were published at Humboldt University in 2009. This was my first steady and strong step towards achieving my goal. Many months after graduations passed before I took a part-time job at an insurance company! Yes, this was a job that I got after attending some quality management training course! The job had nothing to do with horses or genetics, but it did pay for my insurances, my bills, and my house rent. It is very difficult to find a job in equine research. Economically, horses are not like cows, goats or sheep. Therefore, funding an equine research in general, and Arabian horses in particular, is quite difficult, where some people think it is fun or a kind of luxury. May be this is reasonable somehow for economists, because the return from Arabian horses raising in the Middle East is not even equal to their needs and expenses. In the Western world, too, we suffer from the same problem, and researchers must do their best to convince the funding bodies of the importance of the equine research. This is also understandable. The value chain in horse production (and everything related to the horse industry) has variety of models, differ from place to place. Therefore, the investment returns are also varied, taking in consideration all factors and forces affecting the workflow within the “variable and diverse” value chains. However, although I know all these difficulties, but I will continue working in the equine research field, and I will remain passionate about Arabian horses. I will never give up. In Arab world, I think that I am one of the few women who pursued postgraduate studies in the field of genetics and molecular biology research of Arabian horses (or at least one of the pioneers since 2006). I hope that the outcome of my studies and my passion for Arabian horses will stimulate young generation of Arab women in research. I hope to witness their interest in the legacy of Arabian horses. It would be great if I could join them in the horse tracks and attend their lectures! I really hope so.

I was born in Genoa, I have lived all my life in Monte Carlo, where I did my studies. Thanks to my parents, my life has always been set on seeing beautiful places, I’ve travelled around many parts of the world, and this has allowed me not to be rooted to a single place, to love every culture, to make it my own and to respect it. My parents are both great workers, I’m the daughter of a family of shipowners who are set on the respect that everything made to be beautiful must be maintained, and you have to work hard always with much sacrifice and dedication. I have a degree in economics, I have followed many masters and studies, and I am constantly updating myself. I have had the opportunity to be trained very well in my studies, both in foreign languages and in the fields of economics and law. Having a good education is a great gift in my opinion, because it allows you to make your life choices consciously and to be able to create great things, developing them professionally with great diligence. However, no one in my family has ever been tied to material things, for us everything can always be done well, the important thing is to do something unique and great and always with respect, to be remembered in people’s hearts. Thanks to my passion for horses, I work in the horse business, mainly with my husband and my brother (who follows every department of our family almost too meticulously, just kidding of course). In the horse world, we mainly create big events, show jumping, Egyptian and Arabian horses, Shows, then we also train horses in our facilities, we breed them. My husband and father-in-law have been training horses for a generation. Well, I would say that my story is beautiful. It all started as a game, I was proposed by Dr. Santoro to do an event at my facility, the Straight Egyptian World championship, and I liked it. I decided to do it, I designed the event and I did it. The first event was a bit complicated, I didn’t know anything about the world of Egyptian or Arabian horses, nobody, luckily I was helped by Mdm.Chazel and Dominique Briot, I liked them a lot, they taught me many things, I learned from people with respect. The first event I designed well, but it wasn’t what I really wanted, so I took the plane and went around everywhere, I studied everything to improve it according to what I thought was right and with my mum. My mum is the most beautiful and aesthetically pleasing person I know, she is an intuitive woman, when we see things together we always come up with something new. She is my mum and my best friend, she is my dad’s great strength.

I am a born perfectionist. I love beautiful things, I love that people look good. Watching every Arab or Egyptian event in other countries or show jumping, I understood the culture, and the things that I thought were missing. Then I decided to move forward, and I tried to make that SEWC event better every year by giving it all the strength and respect and all the skill and love and experience and neutrality that I could. Every year the Egyptian Horse World Championship has taken shape, beauty strength. I think people love it, because behind its creation there is a meticulous study of every detail by my whole team and my family, and all the people who work like me and have worked with me for years. My sponsors know how much I love it, and I’m sure they love it too, and each of them has put more and more strength into the event, never leaving me alone, and that’s important, not being alone is very important. In the event, almost nothing is left to chance, even if sometimes this is not perceived by others. I love all the sponsors very much, not because of the money they invest, but because I know that they are like me, I feel them close to me while we are creating the event, they all believe in the event strongly, and each one of them allows the event to become more beautiful and unique and above all to endure over time with strength and passion and to reach people’s homes and touch their hearts. It’s as if we all believe in a winning horse and help it to win and endure, against everything and everyone. It’s like we’re showing the world that we’re here too and we’ve done something unique and we’ve taken it home to the people and around the world to make it known. To build an event well is a wonderful thing. As in all things, I have found many obstacles, I have had people making up all sorts of stories to make me lose the organisation of the European Arabian Horse Championships, which were cancelled due to third party issues. But I think that when you know how to do your job well with professionalism, dedication, honesty, respect and great love, in the end everyone always loves you, and loves your events. Knowing how to do an event is like knowing how to paint a beautiful picture, you can do it anytime and anywhere. Then designing things and putting them together is an art of its own, everyone must always decide on their Team Leader and believe in him, to be able to do things. And like knowing how to choose a good designer to make a suit. Mainly, I never get offended if third parties do things, I like to go and look at other people’s things and look at their ideas with love to get new ideas of

my own. I tend never to listen to people when they report negative things to me, I only listen to them if they are constructive for me and if they help me to improve myself. Once my uncle Mario Bianchi, who has now passed away but whom I loved so much, was my mentor, and he told me (..) “talk little and work honestly, you will always win”. (..) “never let those who criticise you clip your wings, and always assess whether those who criticise you have such an exemplary curriculum and life to be able to criticise or teach you something, if not, turn the other way and pursue your own ideas and your own path”. These are kind of my mottos, I love them all. Because I deeply love my life, so I don’t have time to get lost in thinking about, or listening to, things or facts that can’t lead me to do better. If I have to listen to constructive criticism to do better, I listen to it with an open heart and very willingly, because we must always improve. My life is a bit like a horse, you yell at it not to humiliate it but to make it do better, because you know it can do better or win. But my greatest qualities are definitely perseverance and willpower and strength. I hate people who change their ways if they lose; in life, as in sport, you lose and you win, you can’t always win. I think

I have always shown people who know me well that I am a hard worker, I have crazy willpower and I am not afraid of losing or not following my innovative ideas. When I want to reach a goal and I want something to be done well or better, I work on it forever. But when I see it, and it is what I wanted it to be, it repays me immensely for all the effort. My father, my mother, my husband, my brother, my daughter, we’re all a bit like that, we’re all hard workers. When we create events, all of us put all of ourselves into it trying to stay within the budget that we create. This is one of the most difficult aspects, because I think everyone is capable of doing great things by squandering money, I have never squandered money, if you have the budget you can do things, if not I study how to make them beautiful with what I have, I look for budgets, people who know me, who know how I work and have always given me confidence, they know that if I am not sure that things are done well, I don’t recommend them to others and I don’t do them. My dream today is to create a super exclusive and unique place, for more people and brands, and to do more and more new, different, unique and perfect events, which have great media coverage so that they can reach people’s homes everywhere and above all be loved by people.
