Qamar El Zaman Al Waab A horse is a thing of such beauty... none will tire of looking at him as long as he displays himself in his splendor. -Xenophenby Cynthia Culbertson - photos: Glenn Jacobs, Jennifer Ogden
With the birth of every colt, hope is born anew. Will he fulfill the promise of his ancestors? Will he have the qualities to make a breeding stallion? What will his offspring be like – will they resemble his sire, his dam, or his grandparents? Qamar El Zaman Al Waab, as he enters his fourth year, brings to mind all of these questions and more. As he matures into a beautiful young stallion he is also an apt reflection of his name “Moon of the Ages” – a beacon of light reflecting

dreams of a bright future. Those who have loved and admired the Straight Egyptian Arabian horse over the past decades will have vivid memories of Qamar’s ancestors. They will picture the breathtaking trot and charisma of his sire Ansata Nile Echo as he commanded show rings with his huge dark eyes, incredible motion and proudly carried tail. They will reminisce about the alabaster coat and classic type of his grandsire, Al Adeed Al Shaqab,

BLOODLINE as the spotlight illuminated his victory as World Champion Stallion in Paris. Perhaps they were fortunate enough to see the immortal Ansata Halim Shah when he arrived in Qatar, or Ruminaja Ali when he trotted to victory as a U.S. National Champion stallion. Every student of the breed, however, will recognize that Qamar’s quality and beauty are the result of a meticulously planned breeding program. In Qamar’s sire lines, the multiple crosses to Ansata Halim Shah are tempered with outcrosses to Imperial Madheen, Jamil, and Prince Fa Moniet. The dam lines in his pedigree combine many of the most renowned mares to be exported from the Egyptian Agricultural Organization,
including Ansata Bint Bukra, Hanan, Magidaa and Nabilahh. A mare that is featured ten times in Qamar El Zaman Al Waab’s ancestry, however, the beautiful bay Halima, never left her homeland yet exerted a worldwide influence. Qamar hails from this relatively rare Dahmah Shahwaniyah female line of Halima through the mare Maymoonah – he also has eight crosses to her most influential son Ansata Ibn Halima. Glowing with promise as he prances in the light of dawn, it is only fifng that Qamar is wearing a halter especially made by the famed Om Ezzat for his great-great grandsire Ansata Ibn Halima. He is indeed worthy of this honor. m

The farm of Mauro, Carmen and Victor Ranieri is located close to Bolzano in the wonderful region Alto Adige - Südtirol. The Dolomite Mountains are the perfect background for Victor Arabians, founded by Mauro in 1998. After all these years of daily commitment, the stud has developed into one of the most important Italian stud farms. Horses born with the VA prefix were sold to breeders from Europe, South America and across the whole Middle East. “My wife Carmen, my son Victor and I were always been looking for the absolute excellence by being aware of the new trends of the industry,” says Mauro. “We created a strong basis with a small but high-qualitative group of mares, which ensured our long-term breeding journey.” The unity of the family is the winning card of Victor Arabians. Everything is shared and decided together – strategies, breeding plans, daily work, disappointments and successes.

Hidden on the forest edge one can find a boutique breeding farm of purebred Arabian horses named Arabian Stud Europe, founded in 1999 by Talitha Bakker. Since 4 years, her partner Louis is also involved with the horses and together they breed around ten foals a year of which most of them are client owned. Besides show horses, the farm also residents international endurance horses, trained and ridden by Talitha herself.

Since our last feature on Al Dawla Arabians, only 12 months ago, much has transpired for the emerging breeding program. Inspired by the thrill of show ring success at some of the industry’s most important shows, as well as the horses themselves, bred and collected at home in Australia, owner Diaa Karaali has begun a quest to share the Australian Arabians with the world. ‘We had exported a few daughters of RHR Heir of Marwan to Europe, and a son to the Middle East who was very well received there. We had several requests for frozen semen, so I decided instead to send RHR Heir of Marwan to Saudi Arabia himself. Where he can also be shown at the local and international shows, including the Holy City of Mecca Championships and others. He has great potential for many more breeding opportunities to Saudi mares.’ Diaa tells. “We have had great success with Lulu Al Dawla and Haneen al Dawla with Schoukens training centre in Belgium and with Raneem Al Dawla with Capecci Training Centre in Italy and Spain. Najm al Dawla a colt by Heir of Marwan and out of Obayana KA has
had great success in UAE and in Jordan’s Middle East Championship he was awarded with a medal and has now moved to Israel’. With more than a handful of mares, and a young black stallion by WH Justice now living across several countries in Europe, Diaa began the search for a base to keep all his horses outside of Australia in one location. Naturally enough, the search first began in Europe, however Diaa soon turned his sights towards the country of his ancestors, Lebanon. “Starting a farm in Lebanon has been a natural growth to our story with the Arabian horse. There is a spiritual enlightenment that drove us to connect to the bigger world so that the Arabian horse can lead us on a historical journey which can give hope for future generations. To be closer to international shows both in Europe and the Middle East and to the high demand for horses for this task was definitely an added encouragement”. “Like in several countries at the time, there has been in recent history various political and financial decisions in Lebanon that led to mixing Arabian lines with non-

Arabian lines. Lebanon was once part of Al sham with Syria as one nation, and it had the finest purebred Arabians which were exported by Lady Ann to Crabbet Park in the United Kingdom. During the mid 1900s purebred Arabian horses were traded for English thoroughbred lines for racing in the Beirut racetrack. My decision to move some of Al Dawla Arabians finest broodmares and bred horses to Lebanon comes as a childhood dream come true to return the best of the Arabian pure lines back to Lebanon like it once was and at the same time, be the ambassador of the best of the Australian lines and influential programs that outcrossed well to Marwan Al Shaqab and Padrons Psyche lines to Europe and the
Middle East. Geographically and historically Lebanon is situated as the perfect place for all that”. In early 2022 more than 20 females and several young colts made the trek from Sydney to Lebanon without incident, and all are happy and settling into their new way of life. Diaa has initially set himself up in Lebanon to oversee the horses, focusing more energy towards learning the opportunities the country may bring. The stud farm is currently under construction and it will be built to world class standards with over 60 boxes, indoor arenas and visitor accommodation, along with veterinary and training capabilities.

I also sent those with Spanish lines such as GG Magnetism, as well as mares from Amir El Shaklan/ SK Shakla Khan bloodlines, especially those with Windella bloodlines. I have become so enamoured with these bloodlines, and want to share them with the world. We have decided on a program that mixes RHR Heir of Marwan with these specific Spanish and Egyptian lines as this mix not only bred the best show horses for us but also their relatives have been observed to breed the best amongst international programs in USA, Europe and the Middle East through other Marwan Al Shaqab sons and daughters and Padron Psyche sire lines. Some of the mares sent over were in foal to either RHR Heir of Marwan or Fairview Touch of Magic, so we look forward to seeing their foals in due course’.

And thus, more mares were sent to the Netherlands including D’Amors Jewel In The Crown

From his dam Ansate Nile Pearl, Nabeel Al Khaled inherited his nice flea-bitten gray color. On top of that, it’s impossible not to note his Ansata Look which is, most probably, also to be tailed back to Ansata Halim Shah, the grandsire of both of Nabeel’s parents. His gentle and trustworthy character is also contributed by his sire’s genes, and is among the things that make him such an enjoyable Chief Sire in the barns of Tre Balzane stud. Even in extreme situations, he displays how cooperative and responsive he is with humans. He is a horse to rely on. After all, grave doubts may have cropped up in recent years if you believe in the great number of videos presenting scenes of violence involving stallions, and add to that your own observations during shows. Horses are flight animals, however if they can’t flee – such as because during shows a thin gold chain bites into their skin behind their ears as soon as they try to step back from the whip during Stand-up – then stallions in particular may quickly mutate into fighters.

BLOODLINE For stallions today, it is impossible to win a herd of mares according to the biological concept of evolution, where the fittest will win, cover, and transfer his genes. They depend on their owners, managers or breeders for their opportunity to develop naturally, to be allowed to run free with a herd or to be castrated, or to have their fates sealed as servers of phantoms. Nabeel Al Khaled was lucky, there in Brandenburg. He had a peaceful life in a run-in shed, being friends with two very old mares who would not allow him to cover them, but who made him feel like “the master in his own house“. In 2018, there was a short interruption in this idyllic situation when Tomasz Rombauer took the stallion to Babolna stud in Hungary for a breeding season. And sometime during last spring 2020, his lady owner decided to greatly reduce the number of her horses; as experience has shown, the stallions are usually the first ones to have to leave the farms. VERSATILITY OF ARABIAN HORSE
by Talitha Bakker photos by Reindert Jansen & Tales by Joey
The Arabian horse is seen as one of the most beautiful breed in the world. They are also known as the most versatile breed in the world. They are excelling in endurance, but also a few Dressage Arabians make it to the top. Dressage has the goal to make the horse more athletic, more strong and obedient. The horse should perform all exercises correctly. By riding a certain patron of exercises, the horse can earn points. When you collect a certain number of points, you are promoted to the next level with even more complex exercises, keeping it challenging for both the horse and rider. The classes are divided in novice, light, medium, difficult, extra difficult and most difficult. Some countries also build in some classes in between these levels, to make the step up less difficult. In this way it takes a bit pressure of the horse and rider and they can both slowly get used to the new exercises and the complexity of it.

In dressage it is not just all about scoring the highest points. It is also meant to develop your horse. By performing dressage, your horse will develop a better topline, neck and body as well as extending his endurance and mental strength. The highest level of dressage asks a lot of this from the horse and rider. In dressage, they pay attention on the
rhythm and regularity, relaxation, contact, impulsion, straightness, collection and obedience. The points given are from 1 till 10. With a 1 being very bad and a 10 being excellent. Also the character of the horse is important to perform well in dressage. The horse needs to be obedient and willingly. This makes the Arabian Horse so suited for

dressage. Not only do they have a friendly and a topeople oriented character, they are also studious and extremely intelligent. An Arabian horse will always do his very best for its rider, trying to please him as much as he can, but only when treated with the right amount of respect. It is therefore important that the horse is trained in the right way with, when needed, professional guidance. Arabian horses are athletic, nimble and energetic horses, which are all preferred characteristics for a good dressage horse. When starting the dressage training of your Arabian horse, you should keep in mind that the Arabian horse often needs more time to develop mentally and physically. To go slow on the groundwork, the lounging, breaking in and basic training, is essential for a future career. When the horse is obedient in every gait, it responses to only a small impulse from the leg and hand, you can go to the next level in training. Important is that your horse keeps relaxed and is moving with a constant impulse. (the natural impulse of the horse to go forward). With a young horse, you start to ride forward, offering him to go down and seeks for contact with your hands. When you make contact, give the horse some space, making your hand elastic, while keeping the contact with the mouth of your horse. When the horse knows where to find you, you can work some exercises, making bending exercises to stronger the muscles, making the horse more elastic. Just like us humans, also the horse can develop muscle pain. It is therefore important to do a good warm-up and cooling down, to make a variety of different exercises and to not over ask them. The Arabian horse is a pleaser and you sometimes need to protect him not to work too hard. A horse that is well balanced and elastic, is aware
of his body and hind and will find it easier to bend the entire body as well as moving straight. In dressage it is important that the horse keeps a constant contact with your hand without any interference of the bridle bit. The rider should follow the horse movements and keep the light contact with the mouth, keeping the head of the horse on the same position. In every level, new exercises are added and the complexity increase. The higher the level, the more collection in movement is required. With doing so, the hint legs of the horse are being placed further under the body. An Arabian horse, like other breeds, has the natural ability for this collection. You can see this in exercises they perform their selves like rearing. A good collection takes a lot of strength and endurance of a horse. That’s why they slowly ask more of the horse in each level. When a horse is collecting, the back will sphere and the horse will find it easier to carrier the rider. The rider can train this collection by let the horse go sideways or performing transitions in speed. Of course the talent and the body shape are of infl uence on how much time a horse needs to be able to perform these exercises. Generally speaking, with an Arabian horse, it is mainly important to set a step back when they over perform in all their eagerness. It is important to keep rest and consequence during all trainings. When they are over excited during a contest or show some tension, it is wise to practice at home, asking your friends to make some noise, to put blankets or flags around the fence or to turn on some music. Of course it is also important to keep calm yourself and to give enough guidance to the horse. Routine and consistency are the key to a successful sport horse. q

Beauty is Not Everything, But Without Beauty Everything is Nothing. Straight Egyptian Arabians in El La Diva Stud, Belgium. by Monika Savier
Paul Lamers can be described as a veteran of Belgium’s original Arabian horse people. Already, as a young rider, he demonstrated his deep empathy for horses. In 1987, he met Winand Bijnens, the then President of the Belgian Arabian Horse Association, and was able to train his horses. They were straight Egyptian Arabians. This was a challenge in this different environment. Belgium is a country dominated by agriculture, bordering the Netherlands to the north, Germany and Luxembourg to the east and France to the south. The west is washed by the Atlantic Channel and its capital, Brussels, is also the administrative capital of the European Union. In keeping with the tradition of its neighbouring countries, Belgium also has a successful history in equestrian sport and horse breeding. The Belgian warmblood breed is an internationally successful showjumping and dressage horse of powerful and large size that dominates the Belgian sport horse scene and this is also an economic factor. But it is not just a matter of economy. With the interest in so many multicultural dimensions on the part of the international EU administration, there was the great passion of some horse lovers to import fine exotics from the East, namely Purebred Arabians. For many fans of Arabian horses in this country, beauty

was not everything, but it was precisely because of the exotic beauty and elegance of these horses in relation to the sport horses that the desire for Arabians crystallized more and more in Belgium and also in the Netherlands and West Germany, whether they came from Tersk in Russia, Poland and more rarely, Egypt.

Paul Lamers commented: “I loved these fine elegant Arabian horses, they were more intelligent in training and if you treat them like a partner without pressure, they were loyal and would always cooperate.” A few years later Sabine Lens became his partner, and both were now working with Arabian horses. The first horse with which they had lasting show success was the EAO stallion IBN BARRADA by Gad Allah out of Barrada of Ikhnatoon, imported from Egypt. This authentic, typey chestnut also dominated the open shows in the 90s, as the first Egyptian Event
was still years away. Sabine and Paul founded “O.O.X Training Stables” and presented mainly Straight Egyptians, which again had a different type and a finer conformation than the Russian and Polish Arabians from the area. The Arabian horse associations in Europe organized breeding shows where especially the offspring of the good mares and stallions could impress and also be sold. The judging criteria were developed by the newly founded ECAHO (European Conference of Arab Horse Organizations) and the shows at that time in the 80s and 90s were the place to

be with Arabian horses. Sabine and Paul left the world of amateurs and dedicated themselves completely and successfully to professional show training and showing. Their love was unreservedly for the Straight Egyptians. “We accompanied the horses everywhere, to the shows, back then, and we slept in the service stalls next to the horses. For us it was not an option to retire comfortably to a hotel in the evening. It had something of a modern nomadic feel to it. The stables were open to all during the shows and visitors came to have a coffee with us and discuss the horses. We were a community and although there were conflicts, we had something in common that created a strong cohesion, namely the work with the horses, which we all enjoyed,” Sabine Lens says about the 90s show scene. At the beginning of 2000, things slowly changed, the classic breeding show became a beauty contest, a catwalk for horses with panda-eyes and pearl halters. They now increasingly came from the Gulf region, which provided the show business with new money and the ECAHO adjusted the selection criteria CD Anasta (Safeen x Qublah).

accordingly. The breeders of Straight Egyptians mostly did not want to jump on this wave of the new show world. Consequently, the format of the “Straight Egyptian Event”, once created by the Pyramid Society in the USA, came into being. From the German Pyramid Society Europe came the idea for the title show Egyptian Event Europe, which took place for many years in Lanaken, Belgium. Paul was tired of the show circus after 20 years and didn’t want to show horses himself anymore, but the couple supported the Oben family, who were the organizers, with practical and organizational help and also had their own horses presented there, because in the meantime they had founded the farm El La Diva Stud. It came about like this: Ibn Barrada’s owner, Bernard Van de Putte, imported the mare Qublah (Ibn Morafic
x Qisani) from Canada to Belgium in 1998. She was in foal to the SE Show stallion Safeen (Ibn Safinaz x Abitibi Madeena). Qublah stood, like the other show horses of Bernard, in the OOX training stables. When the foal CD Anasta was born there, Paul and Sabine made their decision quickly. This foal should stay. This was a good decision and the bay typey CD Anasta, who also has an excellent body, became the stud’s foundation mare, and with great success. But where did she come from? Qublah, the dam of CD Anasta, embodies the Who’s Who of American Straight Egyptians imported to Texas in the 60’s by Douglas B Marshall (Gleannloch Farms) from EAO, El Zahraa in Cairo. Besides the early Ansata imports, the Douglas B Marshall imports were the elite of the Straight Egyptians at that time and the basis for the world success of these horses, also in Europe and later in the Gulf States. Qisani was sired by Soufian, a Moniet El Nefous son. She was also imported by Douglas B Marshall from EAO, as was the later world-famous stallion Morafic, whose son Ibn Morafic was the sire of Qublah. Anasta’s female line trace back to the influential mare Rodania and thus belongs to the Kuhaylah Rudaniyah tribe. She was born to the Ruala Bedouins in 1869 and was one of the Root Mares of Lady Blunt’s Sheykh Obeyd Stud in Cairo. CD Anasta’s sire, Safeen was the stallion that won the most shows in the 1990s and was also a top show producer through his offspring. His sire, Ibn Safinaz, who was imported to the USA from Cairo/ EAO in 1982, was also an extremely successful show champion in the USA, Paul and Sabine founded their El La Diva stud and, true to their principle of class over quantity, CD Anasta 23 years of age.

Pedigrees tell their cultural history; they are the witnesses of the past and we are also responsible to give meaning to their pedigrees through their foals for the future of the breed”. Monika: That also means you don’t do an embryo transfer, where many full siblings with the same pedigrees in the same year are part of a commercial concept and no longer part of the cultural history of the breed? Paul: “There is no real reason to do embryo transfers. We breed in generations and want to be able to judge the result of each mating accurately and also learn from it for the future. In my opinion, industrialized animal reproduction has no place in our breeding. It is not about producing a lot of horses for the market, but about selective breeding of chosen horses that are worth the good reputation of the Arabian. We have the responsibility for that when we have Arabian horses in our stables and breed with them.” q

According to the Cambridge Dictionary of the English language, the adjective ‘exquisite’ stands for very beautiful and delicate. I must admit that whenever I have the opportunity to admire the three-year old RDS Exquisite in person, I am under the impression that her breeders, Amira and Eiad Safady, could not have chosen a better name for this breathtakingly beautiful bay filly. They admit that “when the filly foal was born in 2019, we were overwhelmed by her beauty and we did our best to find a suitable name for her to reflect how remarkable she is. She was everything we could wish for and more.” She is the third generation of Royal Dutch Arabian Stud breeding program, a blend of fascinating

and precious bloodlines. Her extraordinary type and remarkable refinement did not go unnoticed in the small world of Arabian horses and she quickly caught the attention of Sheikha Muna AL RASHED, a horse breeder, owner and enthusiast known for her great taste in the Arabian breed. After being introduced to SH Muna and her children, Mohamad and Haifa, who share the passion for Arabian horses, the Safady family had no doubts that Al Orasia Stud would be the best forever home they could ever find for their special filly: “RDS Exquisite made her debut in the show ring proudly representing the Kingdom of Bahrain. It was an indescribable feeling for us as her breeders to share such an

extraordinary filly with the world.” Without doubt, RDS Exquisite is the true reflection of Sheikha’s breeding philosophy, where type and beauty are an absolute must for any horse that joins the relatively new but already widely renowned breeding programme of Al Orasia Stud. Located in Al Jasra, a charming coastal village situated on the western coast of the Kingdom of Bahrain, the stud became widely recognised among all Arabian horse aficionados due to its impressive collection of horses carefully chosen by SH Muna herself. Her incredible intuition regarding Arabian horses must have derived from her noble heritage. Her

ancestors trace back to the esteemed Anaza Tribe who have bred and cherished Arabian horses for centuries. Needless to say, the owner of Al Orasia has Arabian horses in her blood and she cannot stress enough how important Arabian type and refinement are to her: “type in Arabians means to me that a horse has all the traits and qualities which distinguish it from other breeds; beauty, movement, charisma and correctness. One cannot exist without the other.” So far, she has consistently followed her breeding vision, which led to some spectacular successes of the Bahraini stud in the show arenas around the world.

Sheikha’s strategy to lease horses before buying them has paid off well, allowing her to observe the horse’s performance and development before including it into her breeding programme. The story of how she acquired RDS Exquisite was no different, even though, in her own words “this filly was a love at first sight. She is so distinguished, so different to anything I have ever seen that we could not resist having her”. But no matter how special she was, Sheikha decided to follow her strategy and lease the filly before making decision to buy her. Her story with this exceptional filly started on one very early morning, when SH Muna and her son Mohamad
took a train from London to Holland to see her in person. Despite the early start, that was a journey she has never regretted. They both fell in love with the fantastic filly and made the decision to speak with her breeders. By no means it is a coincidence that the word ‘royal’ is part of their name as Royal Dutch Arabian Stud is an extremely successful breeding programme of which SH Muna speaks very highly: “Most of their mares are like precious pearls, well hidden from the eyes of the world. Apart from admiring their horses, I was also impressed with their professionalism and how well educated and knowledgeable they are. Also, the love and

appreciation they have for their horses is something very appealing to me. I am nothing less than proud to include a part of RDS into the Al Orasia breeding programme.” The choice of RDS Exquisite was by no means a coincidence, as in Sheikha’s own words: “she has a very interesting pedigree. Both her sire and dam are pretty

special to me”. This young filly has a pedigree which is a dream come true for many breeders as she is linebred to a champion producer, the wonderful WH Justice. Her spectacular sire, the international sensation and triple crown winner Excalibur EA needs no introduction. Considered as an heir to Shanghai EA as well as one

of the best grandsons of WH Justice, he follows in his sire’s and grandsire’s footsteps. Not only did Excalibur take the top of the podium in many prestigious shows but he has also sired excellent progeny worldwide. One of the hidden jewels of Royal Dutch Arabian Stud, the amazing Ajman Moniscione daughter and granddaughter of WH Justice, Angelica KS, seemed like a perfect match for this sensational stallion. Apart from the above-mentioned Ajman Moniscione, widely known as the sire of unbelievably beautiful mares, Angelica has another significant stallion close in her pedigree. Her dam’s sire is the Straight Egyptian Al Hadiyah AA, whom Sheikha Muna also values highly when it comes to Arabian horse breeding. With such a concentration of precious genes, RDS Exquisite was bound to succeed in the show ring. She started her show career on a high note, when as a yearling she bewitched the judges of the 2020 Arabian Horse Weekend, easily winning the first class of the show, the gold medal and International Best in Show title. In the championships, the jury were almost unanimous in their decision, with only one judge pointing to another filly. After this spectacular success in her motherland, the year after Exquisite faced some fierce competition during the 2021 Menton Show in France. Again, she won her class and a day later she became Silver Champion Junior Filly, with two out of six judges choosing her as the gold medallist. This wonderful win inevitably put her on the path to Paris, where during the prestigious World Championships she became Bronze Champion Junior Filly. Exquisite

finished the class on the first place with a very high total score of 93.00 points, including 4x20 for type and 5x20 for head and neck. She certainly could have been luckier in the final competition, especially with three out of eight judges expecting her to take the top of the podium. Even though in the championships she had the same score as the silver medallist, her score in the class was slightly lower, which determined the final placement on the podium. Her breeders are very proud of her debut: “in our hearts, we wish that one day she makes her come back so that everyone in the world can witness her beauty again. A filly of such high quality and so beautiful as RDS Exquisite embodies everything we could wish for as Arabian horse breeders.” However, Sheikha Muna had mixed feelings about her performance at the World Championships: “Knowing how unpredictable the Paris show can be, I was relieved that my filly won the bronze champion title and disappointed at the same time that it was not gold or silver, especially after she did so well in the class. On one hand, a medal in Paris is something that many breeders dream of, on the other hand, I am confident in her quality and I think she should have won either gold or silver champion title.” In the eyes of her owner, RDS Exquisite is an absolute beauty and it is difficult not to agree. Each time this phenomenal filly is presented to the world, she brings the image of the most distinguished dams of the Arabian breed. Beyond the shadow of a doubt, like many of these magnificent mares, she will grow to resemble the work of art. Behold the remarkable RDS Exquisite - a masterpiece in the making! q

THE FIRST QUEEN OF EGYPT

I recall in the 1970s that a certain level of “celebrity” became associated with the Dahman Shahwan strain. It had become much admired, largely through the popularity of the beloved stallion Ansata Ibn Halima. The strain had already been in the U.S. for a long time established in Egyptian lines by Mr. Babson’s imported mare Bint Bint Sabbah. Her dam line produced some quality champions over the years. Bint Bint Sabbah’s handsome sons, Khebir, Fasaab and Fabah were muchadmired sires and many of her daughters founded important families. When Ansata Ibn Halima arrived on the scene, he crossed well with the tail female Bint Bint Sabbah horses, which included the recipe of the renowned “Nile family.” When the splendid Ansata Bint Bukra arrived, another celebrity for the Dahman Shahwan debuted. The contribution of these individuals, while not the only representatives Dahman Shahwan, created a dynasty and in some ways also created an image in the minds of many as to what the

Dahman Shahwan should look like: ideal size, not too big not too small, balanced bodies, clean limbs of just the right proportions, relatively short backs, arched tails, gracefully arched necks, beautiful heads, not too long-not too short, large eyes and wonderful temperament. It sounds like the description of the ideal Arabian horse, almost like the rulebook standard drawing of an Arabian. Indeed many of this strain (though not all) seemed to follow more or less the “rule book” standard look. In my youth I figured it must have something to do with El Dahma, the 1880 mare, a root mare this strain in Egyptian breeding. It was just an assumption that I had for many years without looking into it further. However, as I traveled over the years I began to realize that the Dahman Shahwan strain, like all other strains, could come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. So what role does El Dahma play in Egyptian bloodlines other than just a famous female line?

El Dahma was a mare in the stud of legendary breeder Ali Pasha Sherif born around 1880. There is some speculation based on Lady Anne Blunt’s writing that El Dahma descends from Abbas Pasha stock. We don’t know for sure how many foals she had in her lifetime but she was at some point given by Ali Pasha Sherif to Khedive Tewfik, ruler of Egypt at the time. The Khedive produced her daughter Nadra El Khebira at his stud. The Khedive’s son, Khedive Abbas II inherited Fa Sherifaa (Ansata El Sherif x Faserrabba) 1985 grey mare representing the ideal blending of three famous lines to El Dahma, Ansata Ibn Halima, Ansata Bint Bukra and Bint Bint Sabbah. his father’s stud and under his involvement El Dahma’s next three foals were born. At some point later, all four of El Dahma’s produce would become a part of the breeding of the renowned Prince Mohammed Ali Tewfik. El Dahma’s four foals that have bred on in today’s Arabians are: Nadra El Khebira 1891 grey mare (x Nader El Khebir); Obeya, 1894 grey mare (x Koheilan El Mossen); Gazza, 1895 grey mare (x Saklawi I); Saklawi II, 1896 grey stallion (x Saklawi I).
BLOODLINE El Dahma’s daughter Nadra El Khebira is the grand dam of the celebrated mare Farida who has established a large family. Farida created female lines in Europe, via the famous German Weil-Marbach “M” family handed down from the lovely mares Malikah and Moheba II. Weil-Marbach also used the Farida blood via the mare Nadja of the Nefisa line. Another Farida family was established at Babolna in Hungary from the exceptional mare Bint Inas. In Egypt, Farida’s female line maintained a branch through such splendid
mares as Adaweya. The Nefisa line came to the U.S. in both Pritzlaff and Gleannloch Imports. Farida’s granddaughter the aged Ghazalahh, grandmother of Bint Inas, was imported to the U.S. by Gleannloch however did not produce there. Two other Farida female lines came to the U.S. via Ansata Bint Sameh and her ¾ sister Deenaa, known as the grand dam of legendary stallion Anaza El Farid. Of course Farida’s most world-renowned male descendant is Ansata Ibn Halima.

El Dahma’s daughter Obeya is the grand dam of the mare Sabah (with 2 lines to El Dahma), who became one of the most prolific female lines to El Dahma via her three grand daughters, Bint Bint Sabbah, Bukra, and Layla. Bint Bint Sabbah, the aforementioned Babson import, produced seven daughters, many found not only in Egyptian lines but also in other American bloodlines. She is the dam line of International Champion Fa Halima (x Ansata Ibn Halima), just one beautiful example of the ideal matching of the Halima
Nazeer (Mansour x Bint Samiha) 1934 grey stallion, the most transformational sire in Arabian breeding since the Polish stallion Skowronek. Though Hadban Enzahi by strain, even Nazeer traces to El Dahma, through his grandsire Gamil Manial. Judi Forbis photo.

and Sabah blood. The beautiful Bukra produced Bint Bukra at the EAO and also Ansata Bint Bukra imported to the U.S. by Ansata and, in combination with Ansata Ibn Halima’s blood, founded a huge influence within Egyptian lines worldwide. Layla is revered as the female line of Europe’s magnificent Tamria line, from the beautiful mare Kamar. Because the Sabah branch of El Dahma is connected to so many females it has helped El Dahma become perhaps the largest mare line within straight Egyptian breeding.

Morafic (Nazeer x Mabrouka) 1956 grey stallion, certainly the most exotic Nazeer son. Even though he is of the Saklawi Jidran strain Morafic carries 11 crosses to the original El Dahma, compared to Ansata Ibn Halima’s 7 crosses. Jerry Sparagowski photo.
Prince Fa Moniet (TheEgyptianPrince x Fa Moniet) 1981 grey stallion. A very prepotent sire. He not only carries 48 crosses to the original El Dahma of Ali Pasha Sherif but he carries a line to El Dahma’s daughter Ghazza via his granddam Fada. Jerry Sparagowski photo.
The line to Gazza is not found as a female line but rather through her grandson the bay stallion Bark, who is found in the pedigree of the Queen Mother’s stallion Ibn Farhan and also the imported Babson mare Bint Saada. Bint Saada produced no daughters that bred on but her son Faddan (x Fadl) is found in many prominent horses such a Prince Fa Moniet and Akid Geshan.
El Dahma’s only son is Saklawi II. While it has already been noted El Dahma’s female line is very prolific, what has further made her one of the most influential Egyptian mares of all time is the fact that her son Saklawi II is also the sire of two important stallions Mabrouk Manial, sire of numerous important mares, and Gamil Manial, grandsire of Nazeer.

Royal Colours (True Colours x Xtreme Wonder) 2003 straight Egyptian bay stallion. 2009 Paris World Champion stallion. He carries an incredible 579 crosses to the original El Dahma of Ali Pasha Sherif. Gigi Grasso photo.
Considering all this, one can easily see that there are many crosses to El Dahma in Egyptian pedigrees. Interestingly the famous and most exotic Nazeer son Morafic, a horse who is clearly much different in type than the other famous Nazeer son Ansata Ibn Halima, actually has more crosses to El Dahma than does Ansata Ibn Halima. Morafic has 11 lines to El Dahma. Ansata Ibn Halima has 7 lines to El Dahma. Because El Dahma comes down through Egyptian breeding in a variety of ways, she is in every Egyptian pedigree, and her role is very strong throughout Arabian breeding, much in the same way that the Blunt’s mare Rodania is found throughout Egyptian and Arabian breeding worldwide. By example, today just within straight Egyptian breeding the recent Paris World Champion Royal Colours carries 579 crosses to El Dahma. Even horses that are not straight Egyptian benefit considerably from El Dahma’s influence. Paris World Champion Pianissima has 71 crosses to El Dahma. Marwan Al Shaqab has 69 crosses to El Dahma, and WH Justice has 52 crosses to El Dahma. There is no confirmed description about what El Dahma looked like herself, so we cannot make the sweeping judgment that there is a certain look to the El Dahma family. But it is clear by the huge family she has created that her role in Arabian breeding is enormous and her descendants will continue to be popular for a long time. So it is only fitting that we celebrate Egypt’s “first queen” El Dahma. q

Endurance Riding by Talitha Bakker photos by Arabian Stud Europe archive
www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 155
Endurance Riding Endurance riding is one of the oldest disciplines in horse riding. Already centuries ago, the horse and his rider where covering many miles together. Either to delivering important messages, to fight war, to herd cows or simple as means of transport. Endurance started as a sport in the United States, where the US cavalry tested its horses on a five-day, 300-mile (483km) ride, with each horse carrying over 200lbs (91kg). It did not become a competitive sport until the 1950s, when Wendell Robie traced the Pony Express route from Nevada to California in under 24 hours. Wendell Robie inspired and organized the first competitive ride from Lake Tahoe across the mountains to Auburn in California; one hundred miles to be completed in less than 24 hours, under veterinary supervisio.
156 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
Endurance is a long-distance competition against the clock, testing the speed and endurance of a horse and challenging the rider over their effective use of pace, thorough knowledge of their horse’s capabilities and ability to cross all kinds of terrain. Although the rides are timed, the emphasis is on finishing in good condition rather than coming in first. Endurance competitions can be a one-day competition, where the start and finish is at the same day, but there are also competitions that can have more riding days. One of the longest is being planned for 2024, 20 days, 1200 km, from south to northern Germany, called the Trans Germania. The fun about endurance is that you can participate with any horse. Doesn’t matter the breed or the age of the horses. Every horse from 4 – 30 years in age are welcome! The distance
www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 157
Endurance Riding starts with 20km in one day to a max of 160km in one day. When you like to go on a multi-day-event, then the shortest distance is 40km in two days. You can go as slow as 6 km/h average speed but can also join the big international FEI competitions where the speed is around 25 km/h average speed. Before, during and after the competition, your horse is being checked by a veterinarian. They check of course the movement of the horse, but also the heartrate. This must not exceed 60-64 Beats per minute. They also check if the horse is not dehydrated and if they eat well during the competition. And if they are no irritations or wounds from the saddle or bridle.
158 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
At most rides ,the trail is marked with arrows, pointing out the route to take. There are also rides where you have to find your way on a map and they are no markings to point you in the right direction. During the competition, the riders have a groom with them who takes care for both the rider and the horse. Proving food and water on the way and helping with the vet examinations. After every loop, there is a 40 minutes break where both horse and rider can rest. Endurance rides take you to one of the most beautiful places in the world. Wonderful scenery, great friends and a great atmosphere makes it more than just a sport. It is a lifestyle! q

This series is about taking a look back, just for fun, at some photos of horses born at the R.A.S. many years ago who are no longer found in straight Egyptian breeding but might have made some interesting contributions to the quality and genetic choices for today’s straight Egyptians.
The old stallion Awad (Mabrouk Manial x Bint Obeya) being presented to visitors at the R.A.S. in the late 1930s. Note his very large eyes. Forbis archive photo.
I chose the opening photo above just for reminiscing. In the late 1930s at the R.A.S. Nazeer would have been a young horse at the race track and then out at the stallion depots so he was not yet a phenomenon to be presented to visitors. His sire Mansour was much in use and had proved to be a very good sire. Mansour’s first prominent son, Sheikh El Arab (x Bint Sabah), would precede Nazeer at stud at the R.A.S. Today we have Sheikh El Arab blood only through his daughters, not any of his sons.

El Dalil 1940 bay stallion by Sheikh El Arab x Bint Dalal. Forbis archive photo.
In the Forbis archive are photos of two sons of Sheikh El Arab who are not found today in straight Egyptian breeding. The first is the 1940 bay stallion El Dalil (x Bint Dalal). He was used once by the R.A.S. producing a bay daughter named Dalila II (x Shams) sold as a 3 year old. Nothing much is known about what became of El Dalil but since his daughter was out of the mare Shams (Mashaan x Bint Samiha) there must have been some interest for racing potential. He appears to be a very handsome horse. The second son of Sheikh El Arab pictured here is Salhan, a 1943 grey stallion out of Medallela, making him a full brother to Wanisa the dam of legendary Moniet El Nefous. A handsome

horse, Salhan also exhibits the type and quality that seems consistent from Sheikh El Arab. However, there are no recorded get of Salhan and nothing further is known about his fate. Sheikh El Arab’s daughters became legendary for their produce, yet sadly no sons succeeded him. Because most of his get were born during the era of World War II, one would speculate that point in history might have limited breeding opportunities for Arabians. Perhaps if either of these two Sheikh El Arab sons had been given an opportunity for a good selection of mares things would be different. They would have added a new branch to the Saklawi I sire line which now is only represented by Nazeer.

Bint Rabdan, 1921 grey mare (Rabdan El Azrak x Bint Gamila) a lovely full sister to Ibn Rabdan. Forbis archive photo.
Digging further in the Forbis archive reveals a photo of the R.A.S. mare Bint Rabdan. This lovely flea bitten grey mare is a full sister to the celebrated sire Ibn Rabdan (Rabdan El Azrak x Bint Gamila). She was born in 1921 and produced five foals for R.A.S. Unfortunately she died after her fifth foal, named Hakma, sired by El Deree. Hakma was sold to Mohammed Hilmi Baleigh and has no recorded progeny. Her only other daughter Rasmeia, sired by Rustem, was sold to the Italian Government. So there were no daughters to replace Bint Rabdan at the R.A.S., a loss considering the legacy of the Hadban Inzihi strain. Bint Rabdan produced three sons, Ibn Bint Rabdan (x Hamran), Dahshan (x Mansour) and Habashi (x Mansour). Dahshan died at age nine without any get, and there are no get recorded for the other two sons of Bint Rabdan. For such a nice mare, it is a shame that Bint Rabdan did not leave

any legacy today, even though there is considerable representation of her brother Ibn Rabdan. Judging from Bint Rabdan’s son Habashi who is pictured here there seems to be a lot of quality in her get. Note Habashi’s excellent legs and good proportions as well as having large eyes well placed in his head. Habashi was sired by Mansour, so again, if he would have been given an opportunity at stud he could have created another branch of the Saklawi I sire line. Often such good stallions spent their lives in the stallion depots out in the provinces to improve local horses and that is no doubt a worthy contribution for the Egyptian population who depended on good horse flesh to conduct their daily business. Nazeer himself spend much of his life in the provinces before being called back for stud at the R.A.S. [later renamed E.A.O.].

While on the subject of Nazeer and the Hadban Inzahi strain, Nazeer’s dam was favored by the racing community and her line has done well on the track. In honor of the new young King Farouk, the R.A.S. gave the stallion Hamdan (Ibn Rabdan x Bint Radia) to the Royal Inshass Stud in exchange for El Deree from the King. At the R.A.S. El Deree sired a number of good foals, [see Arabian Essence Newsletters April and May 2009] one of which was out of Nazeer’s dam Bint Samiha. The resulting foal was the mare Morgana. This would have been an ideal representative of both parents. In Morgana’s picture as a young mare one can see the good legs and conformation of her sire along with a lovely head of her dam. Morgana was sold to Mohammed Taher, presumably for the racing community, however she left no recorded progeny. El Deree was a wonderful out cross for the R.A.S. mares giving quality and genetic diversity. It would have been very nice if Morgana had replaced herself several times at the R.A.S. before being sold but it was not to be.

Another El Deree get produced in 1936 at the R.A.S. was the stallion Azeem out of Hind (Ibn Rabdan x Bint Rustem). The photo at right shows the good overall quality and form of another El Deree get from a mare of the Hadban Inzihi strain. His dam’s line is that of the famed Aswan and Simeon Shai. If Azeem had been retained by the R.A.S. and given an opportunity for a selection of good mares, it would have been another opportunity to preserve the now very, rare El Deree sire line. But it did not happen. While all of this is just speculation and perhaps a bit of lament about past choices, this newsletter is intended to encourage thinking about what has bred on into today, and to take a second look at maintaining some diversity so that the future of Egyptian breeding will not need to be one of fewer choices. Every new foal born deserves a closer look.

This series continues our look back at some photos of horses born in Egypt many years ago who are no longer found in straight Egyptian breeding but might have made some interesting contributions to the quality and genetic choices for today’s straight Egyptians. Let’s explore some more possibilities that got away. First is the full sister to Nazeer, Bint Bint Samiha. Actually there two full sisters to the legendary Nazeer produced before Nazeer was born. Both were purchased by Ahmed El Sherif. While there are no recorded progeny from these two in the RAS studbooks it is likely that they became a part of the racing community since there was a great deal of respect for the produce of Bint Samiha as racing prospects. One can see by the yearling photo of Bint Bint Samiha that the special kind of dryness and refinement associated with Nazeer is also apparent in his full sister. It would have been interesting if one of Nazeer’s full sisters was retained at the RAS to see how she would have contributed, but it was not to be.

A stallion of the Hadban Enzahi strain on both sides of his pedigree was the black-bay stallion El Akhrani born at the RAS in 1937. His is an interesting pedigree because he is by the desert bred stallion Nabras and out of the RAS mare Bint Rustem who founded the dynasty of many greats including Aswan, Ibn Galal and many others. Bint Rustem herself was close to desert breeding so this would make El Akhrani a useful outcross for Egyptian breeding at the RAS. He was sold to Mohamed Taher Pasha as a young horse so became a part of the racing community. Later he was owned by Queen Nazli of Egypt and when she came to America in 1950 she imported four Egyptian horses, including El Akhrani. He was the oldest stallion in the group and it appears that he was acquired by Riyad Ghali in California. It was not until he was 27 years old that he sired his first foals, only one of which was out of the Queen Mother’s Egyptian horses, the stallion Kurasan out of the mare Princess Fawzia (Ibn Farhan x Saema). Kurasan was never used at stud. The other three were out of Al Khamsa mares that were predominantly Egyptian, early Blunt and Davenport desert breeding and while they continued on very thinly in Al Khamsa bloodlines, El Akhrani would become lost to Egyptian breeders which is sad considering the quality of his pedigree. The one photo of him shows a handsome horse with large expressive eyes so true to close up desert breeding.

Because of the Inshass program the strains of Abayyan Om Jurays and Kuhaylan Krush were restored to the gene pool the new EAO had to work with. Among the very nice mares of the Kuhaylan Krush group was the lovely flea bitten grey mare Shaheera. However another very handsome son of El Nasser was El Moutannabi who was also a Hadban Enzahi stallion out of Fasiha (Awad x Hind), a granddaughter of Bint Rustem. El Moutannabi raced very well. Because he became a part of the racing community, he did not leave any registered foals in the studbook. His photos show a very handsome stallion of great quality and type. El Moutannabi would have been another opportunity for the kind of formula that helped to extend the success of the horse of Egypt: that of an outcross desert bred horse combined with an Egyptian bred one. This formula created the great sires Sid Abouhom (El Deree x Layla) and Sameh (El Moez x Samira INS), the excellent mare Shams (Mashaan x Bint Samiha) and the important sire Kheir (Ibn Samhan x Badaouia), all found in the pedigree of today’s famous sires such as Ansata Hejazi and many more. q

VERSATILITY OF ARABIAN HORSE
“Arabians at their best” Eventing text and photos by Talitha Bakker
Eventing is the ultimate test of a horse and rider – comprising three disciplines – Dressage, Cross Country and Show Jumping, the scores from each combine to produce an overall total. Eventing (sometimes known as Horse Trials) takes place over one, two and three days depending on the level of competition – evolving from the training of cavalry horses the sport is rather like a pentathlon in that it combines diff erent disciplines in one competition and is run on a cumulative penalty basis. Eventing demands of the competitor considerable experience in all branches of equitation and a precise knowledge of the horse’s ability and of the horse a degree of competence resulting from intelligent and rational training. It covers all round riding ability and horsemanship: the harmony between horse and rider that characterize Dressage; the contact with nature, precise knowledge of the horses’ ability and extensive experience essential for the Cross Country; the precision, agility and technique involved in Jumping. Eventing is one of the three disciplines in competition at the Olympic Games, the other two being Jumping and Dressage. Modern competitions consist of three distinct tests: Dressage, Cross-Country and Jumping. Th ey take place on separate consecutive days during which a competitor rides the same horse throughout. 1. Dressage Test - After an opening Horse Inspection, a Dressage test is performed, the object of which is the harmonious development of the physique and ability of
172 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
the horse. The test consists of a series of compulsory movements at walk, trot and canter gaits, within a rectangular arena 60 m. long and 20 m. wide. To perform a good Dressage test, the horse needs to be flexible and fluid. To keep the strong Eventing horses under the firm control required by the exacting Dressage movements involves great knowledge and understanding. A good Dressage test lays the foundation for the rest of the competition and horses that are found wanting in this phase face an uphill struggle to get up amongst the prize-winners. 2. Cross-Country Test - The focus of the entire event ison the Cross-Country test, the objective of which is to test the ability of athletes and horses to adapt to diff erent and variable conditions (weather, terrain, obstacles, footing etc...) and jumping ability of the horse, while at the same time demonstrating the rider’s knowledge of pace and the use of his horse. Exceeding the time allowed and refusals result in penalties. All penalties are added together and recorded for inclusion in the final classifi cation. Fall of a horse and/or of a rider entails immediate elimination. 3. Jumping Test - The Jumping test takes place on the last day after a second Horse Inspection. Riders may voluntarily retire their horses if they seem unfit to continue. This test is run in reverse order of merit and its main objective is to prove that the horses have retained their suppleness, energy and obedience in order to jump a course of 11 to 15 obstacles. The winning individual is the competitor with the lowest total of penalty points. The winning team is the

VERSATILITY OF ARABIAN HORSE
one with the lowest total of penalty points, after adding together the final scores of the three highest placed competitors in the team. All horses and riders need to build up their levels of skill, the sport has diff erent levels of competition ranging from Intro classes, to Pre-Novice, Novice, Intermediate and Advanced. As horses progress through each level gaining points and experience the level of the competition increases. It is one of very few sports where professionals and amateurs compete on a level playing fi eld with even the most experienced riders having to start at the lower levels with the young horses. Eventing is an Olympic discipline and is amongst just a handful of sports where men and women are considered entirely equal - there are no distinctions or single sex classes. Before anyone decides to take up eventing, they will need a good range of basic riding skills and a high level of horsemanship. Horsemanship is important in eventing, where so much is being asked of the horse – a true partnership. Th erefore, the rider must be able to communicate easily and openly with their horse. Once a good level of riding has been acquired, the rider will need to learn how to jump, if they do not know how to do so already. Th ey will also need to study dressage and the range of manoeuvres they will be expected to perform – which can be anything other than the very highest level movements. Once the individual components have been mastered, the rider must start putting them together. They will need to train in such a way that their work in, say, the
174 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
cross country element, does not leave them too tired to be able to compete properly in the dressage. As well as riding skills, a three day eventer will need to work on their general fi tness and stamina levels to ensure that they do not become fatigued in a competition. Do not forget that in most cases, men and women compete on equal terms at eventing. Although this is testament to the ability of female riders, it does mean that they will have to work particularly hard at building up stamina and strength while men may have to concentrate on their grace and elegance when riding. The horse too will need to be well trained for a three day event. At lower levels, any horse can be used in competition. But it must always be well-conditioned. However, as the levels get higher, the horse will need to be a thoroughbred to compete convincingly as these have the maximum athleticism and stability. It is here that the Arabian Horse is at its best. The horse must be trained to listen to its rider at all times. It needs to listen well to be able to perform the many and varied things it will have to do, and to do these things in an elegant and careful manner. In cross country particularly, the horse must be a good listener because the risk of falling is so much higher. A perfect jumping ability is not usually necessary, although the horse must be competent and confi dent at the jumps. Three-day, and indeed one-day, eventing is an arduous sport, because of the disciplines. It requires a lot of
VERSATILITY OF ARABIAN HORSE training and if the rider is not prepared to put in the work and be completely dedicated, it may be better to concentrate their eff orts on the individual disciplines alone. These too are hard work, but can be more recreational at lower levels, than the time consuming three-day eventing. Once the rider and horse are good prepared, Eventing is one of the most exciting discipline in the equestrian riding. It is also a lot of fun and gives a true bonding with your horse. Eventing is also a discipline during the European Arabian horse sport championships. With its various jumps, it is a great one to watch as a spectator as well.

VERSATILITY OF ARABIAN HORSE
“Arabians at their best” Tevis Cup by Talitha Bakker z photos by Karen Chaton and others
This article is dedicated the Tevis Cup, a part of endurance riding. The vast majority of the major cup winners have been either pure or part bred Arabians. It would be safe to say that the Arabian breed dominates the sport of enduranceand trail riding in the world.
The Tevis Cup is the oldest modern day trail ride. e ride was rst organized by Wendell Robie, an Auburn businessman and devoted rider of the Sierra high country. Many people in the 50s doubted that any modern-day horse could cover the rugged trail from Lake Tahoe to Auburn in a single day. Wendell and a few of his friends proved them wrong in August of 1955. He continued to hold the ride annually thereafter and organized the Western States Trail Foundation to preserve the 100 mile (more or less 160 km)trail and the Ride. The Tevis Cup trophy is awarded to the person who completes the 100-Mile One-Day course in the shortest amount of time and whose horse is in sound condition and “fit tocontinue”. e trail follows a rugged portion of the Western States Trail which stretches from Salt Lake City, Utah, to Sacramento, California.

would depend on the level or division you have entered. The following morning, the ride itself begins. Competitors VERSATILITY OF ARABIAN HORSE set their own pace and, unless instructed otherwise, in the gait they prefer. The choice of speed and gait in each segment of the ride is an important tactic. Competitors are observed by the judges at various points along the trail. The horse’s pulse and respiration (“P&R”) are checked periodically, during mandatory holds/lunch stops. Lunch is either provided by the rider or ride management depending on the CTR. Any feed given to the horse must be carried by the rider. When riders reach a certain mile marker at the end of the day’s ride, they must maintain forward motion into camp, with no further stops allowed. Thus, it is the last opportunity to make timing adjustments. Riders who are ahead of time may stop at that point for as long as they like, but once leaving it, may not stop until they get into camp. The only exception to the rule is if the horse wishes to drink at a creek crossing, which is permitted in the interest of good horsemanship. However, riders are not to linger, but simply let the horse drink and move on. Riders behind schedule need to speed up to get to camp. At the end of the day, all horses are again presented to the judges for an exam. The Horsemanship Judge checks each competitor’s trailer and camp for safety and care of the horse. If the competition is a one-day ride, awards for these horses and riders will be given. If a two-day or three day ride, there is another ride briefing to recap the day and announce

The Stallion Power
BLOODLINE
Musings on Some Descendants of the Om Dalal family by Joseph Ferriss Article published with the kind permission of Arabian
Essence
Just for fun let’s look back on the female line of Om Dalal, one of the most celebrated Saklawi Jidran female lines in Egyptian breeding and, through pictures, get a feel for its influence. Om Dalal became a broodmare for Prince Mohammed Ali. She produced the stallion Samhan of which there is only one known picture of him in old age. He appears to be a handsome horse with a rather masculine face, not extreme by any means. He is the sire of Ibn Samhan, who sired Balance a horse of high conformational quality and the greatest Egyptian race horse of the past as well as a sire of quality mares. Balance was sire and grandsire of a good many race winners so he was a proven performance horse but he was a plain looking type. Ibn Samhan also sired the
stallion Zarife (x Mahroussa) and the mare Bint Saada (x Saada) who were imported to the U.S. and became ancestors in many endurance pedigrees and American bred performance horses. In Egypt Ibn Samhan also sired Kheir (x Badouia) who raced well and sired race winners. So it would be realistic to say that Om Dalal’s son Samhan was primarily a source of performance quality though not necessarily associated with beauty. Nonetheless it is important to have such “performance” potential included in the ancestry of this family.
Dalal [Al Zarka] 1903 grey mare by Rabdan x Om Dalal, at Prince Mohammed Ali’s stable. All the spendour of this famous Saqlawi Jidran line begins here. Forbis collection.
On the female side, Om Dalal’s daughter Dalal (also called Dalal Al Zarka - the grey Dalal) a full sister to Samhan, was an attractive mare of refinement, a bit long in body but good
depth, long forearms, with desirable short canon bones, and nice expressive eyes. Dalal produced quality but also proved to be a line of great beauty increasing with each generation.

Dalal confirmed her merit as a broodmare through her son Gamil Manial sire of Mansour who is famed for his sons Nazeer and Sheikh El Arab. Dalal’s daughters were also a significant influence. Dalal’s daughter Mahbouba is granddam of Mr. Babson’s import, the previously mentioned Bint Saada (who has two crosses to Om Dalal). Dalal’s
daughter Ghazalah (who also has two crosses to Om Dalal) became a broodmare for the Inshass Royal stud. Dalal’s daughter Khafifa (by Ibn Samhan) produced Medallela, whose beautiful daughter Wanisa is celebrated for producing Moniet El Nefous.

As you look at the picture of the young Medallela you can already see emerging a kind of refinement of this family. This type of head is a bit longer but with the distinct prominent forehead “jibbah” gracefully curving below into a distinct dish in the face and tapering to a soft rounded muzzle. As you look at the picture of Medallela’s daughter Wanisa
(x Sheikh El Arab) as a filly, you can see the refinement and beauty of facial details and lovely ear shape. The face is now longer and more refined. This look is transmitted to her daughter Moniet El Nefous. Wanisa has 3 lines to Om Dalal. Breeding Wanisa to Shahloul to produce Moniet El Nefous represents the marriage of two celebrated Saqlawi Jidran families, Om Dalal and Bint Radia.
Gamil Manial (Saklawi II x Dalal) pictured here in old age. He is the grandsire of legendary sires Nazeer and Sheikh El Arab. Forbis collection.
Studying the portrait of Moniet El Nefous taken by Judi Forbis in Egypt you can see that she was not just a mutation of nature but also the distillation of all the beauty of this female line that seemed to increase with each generation. In the details of Moniet El Nefous one sees the graceful lengthening of facial features, the refined dry skin showing dryness and detail, an enhanced and more elegant ear shape, and more expressive eyes with just a bit of white in the corners giving a more “human like” expression. This is a
portrait of the evolution of beauty in the Om Dalal family with Moniet El Nefous being the ultimate conclusion. Because her look was so strong for generations, Moniet El Nefous became a transformational figure in Arabian breeding much the way Nazeer did. It seemed to many that a “new archetype” look for the Arabian horse had emerged as her descendants and those of Nazeer were sought after by many in the desire to produce more of this look that we still see today.

There are those who argue that such a type of head as Moniet’s is an aberration and would be found elsewhere or in the desert among Bedouin tribes. Maybe not in the extreme, but I am not one to make such sweeping generalizations. I
remember seeing the straight Babson Egyptian mare Aradan in old age and being taken by how much she resembled the Moniet El Nefous look, even though she had no Om Dalal or Moniet in her pedigree.

Let’s also take for the sake of comparison, the head type of Moniet’s grand dam Medallela and compare it to a 100% pure Shammar Bedouin mare born in 1896. The Bedouin mare’s name is Abeyah, she is of the Abeyan Sharrak strain and she was imported to the U.S. in 1906 by Homer Davenport. He had written that Sheikh Hashem Bey said
“she had the rarest head there was in the desert and was one of the most valuable of mares”. There are incredible stories about her speed and endurance in Homer Davenport’s book and she proved that a mare with a long and refined face can still be a true “performer.” People who knew her remarked about her unusual beauty compared to her contemporaries.
A portrait of the queen Moniet El Nefous (Shahloul x Wanisa). The beauty of this line has reached its optimum result. Aradan 1953 chestnut mare (Khebir x Nadra), a straight Babson Egyptian mare born in America just seven years after Moniet El Nefous. She has no Om Dalal or Moniet in her pedigree but notice the head type. Ferriss collection.
In this comparison photo one can see the that Abeyah on the right born nearly 40 years before Medallela on the left shows the unique configuration of the skull representing a type like that which evolved into the look of Moniet El Nefous. One wonders what legacy Abeyah might have created had she been acquired by the R.A.S. Certainly Abeyah was not lost in Arabian breeding since she is found in Al Khamsa breeding but is also the tail female mare of the famous show horse sire Versace (Fame VF x Precious As Gold) and is in the pedigree of other famous sires such as Ali Jamaal, Jullyen El Jamal (3 times) and Ivanhoe Tsultan to name a few.
The “Moniet” look is one we see quite often today because it is so inspirational and admired. It has proven to be a feature, though rare, that has existed within the breed for a long time. Yet racing speed was also associated with the Moniet female line, such as the incredible influence of the intensely Moniet bred stallion Moniet El Nafis (Ibn Moniet x Hoyeda) to name just one. The Om Dalal family has shown in the past that it can produce both beauty and “performance”, just as the Bedouin mare Abeyah herself had proved. To me the “ideal” is still the Arabian that can be both beautiful and a remarkable athlete at the same time and let us hope that we can continue to preserve the perfect harmony between both in the future.
A comparison between a member of the Om Dalal family, Medallela on the left (grand dam of Moniet El Nefous) and a 19th century Bedouin bred mare Abeyah on the right, imported to the U.S. by Homer Davenport. The work is the subject of great interest and success in the artistic world. Nel gennaio 2019 termina l’opera “Indisturbata”, scolpita nel marmo rosa di Portogallo ed esposta a palazzo Trentini (Trento), dove conquista uno strepitoso successo. of little Aylan, an image that went around the world and that we all sadly remember. The sculpture is conceived and designed by the artist to be a warning of the tragedy, which is why it was donated to the Holy Father, Pope Francesco, on September 13, 2017 and given by him to the Rome headquarters of the FAO, where it is now on display. In 2018, Prevedel created a sculpture on white stone from Vicenza dedicated to the aviation pioneer Gianni Caproni. The work has a remarkable success acclaimed also by the most illustrious art critics and is exhibited at the Cassa Rurale of Arco (Trento). In January 2019 he finishes the work “Indisturbed”, carved in pink marble from Portugal and exhibited at Palazzo Trentini (Trento), where it wins a resounding success. The exhausting work, carried out completely by hand and without the use of electrical instruments - as are all the other works of the sculptor - engaged the artist for 10 months. 194 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

The love for art and aesthetics has brought Prevedel closer to the world of the Arabian horse. Thanks also to his friendship with Mauro, Carmen and Victor Ranieri of Victor Arabians, who for years have been breeding Arabian thoroughbreds with love and dedication in Nova Ponente in Trentino Alto Adige, Italy, achieving respectable results and exporting breeding and show horses in Italy and abroad, Prevedel began to take an interest in the world of Arabian horses and the breeding of these wonderful animals. With the intention of making his art available to the world of the Arabian horse Prevedel aims to create eternal works of historical and important Arabian horses (some of which are already deceased) in real size - one of a kind! While cultivating the dream of becoming a good breeder of Arabian horses his attention is all on the aesthetics and morphology of these animals that with their grace have always enchanted man. His expert hands will be able to exalt in the matter the traits that distinguish the most famous and important specimens and progenitors who have made the history of the Arabian horse. The dimensions of the works that can reach the natural size (scale 1:1) will be able to represent all the magnificence that some subjects have left in their descendants and that have arrived to us today.
During 2019 Prevedel also makes his only work in wood, a material he doesn’t like to work with as much as marble, creating a Christ on the Cross whose features are masterful. The work is exhibited in the Artist’s country of residence. The Artist participates in the International Biennial RomArt2019 in Rome among the 150 artists from
