The Mares of Al Qusar Stud and Their Offspring, a Story in Generations by Monika Savier
is a stud farm in Germany whose name stands for the successful breeding of classic Eg yptian Arabians whose offspring can be found in many studs around the world. The stud AL QUSAR Arabians has a long history, as it changed over the years from an internationally successful show-training stable to a successful stud for breed56 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
BLOODLINE “When I take the mares with their foals to the pasture early in the morning and see the babies exploring their environment, running after butterflies and do canter pirouettes in front of their proud mothers, then I know that I wouldn’t want to trade this 7-day job for anything in the world.” Robert Schlereth

ing straight Eg yptian Arabians. The two owners, Robert Schlereth and Volker Wettengl are experienced trainers and breeders who not only seek to realize their own interests through breeding, but are also influencers for many young and older breeders in Germany who have also succumbed to the fascination of straight Eg yptian Arabians. www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 57

You could say they are all part of a large network that not only exists in the social media, but also supports each other in real life, advises, and helps at events. In principle, they all agree that climate change is also a problem for horse breeding and that ecological farming and animal welfare play a major role, which in the reality of the studs has to some extent eclipsed the discussions about the past of Arabian horses. Large pastures, healthy feed, loving treatment of the horses, strategic planning of reproduction is almost a matter of course at the traditional studs in Germany. Critical, on the other hand, is the breeding and selection of specialized show Arabians, because a beautiful Arabian horse with type and charisma should not be judged by the show circus first but should rather become a successful breeding or riding animal according to other criteria. Quality, functionality, Arabian nobility and type, all these are characteristics are better evaluated in the studs, specifically when the horses can be judged in a relaxed way in their home environment, without being trained and presented according only to ECAHO show criteria. The first of the "Open House Presentations" was hosted at the Nobel Festival in Holland, and last year at the Open House of the studs at the Katharinenhof of Dr. Nagel, at the El Thayeba Stud and Al Qusar Stud- all three studs are located in the same place Grossenkneten in the north of Germany. It is thanks to these three world famous studs that the region has gained recently an international reputation for the breeding of Straight Egyptians.

BLOODLINE If today the horses of Al Qusar are no longer to be found at shows, then there is a good reason for this. The stud was founded 25 years ago in the Lüneburger Heide in the north of Germany by Robert Schlereth and Volker Wettengl as a breeding and show training stable. There, everything has always revolved around Arabian horses, on the ground, in hand, in the saddle, and on the many kilometers on the road to the shows. Full of hopes, joy, sometimes disappointments, but always with the vision of an own breeding, which was successfully worked on in parallel over the years. This stud in the Lüneburg heathlands was an institution in Germany for many breeders and a great challenge for the two owners. But at some point, something had to change so that it could continue. Robert Schlereth: "We developed more and more away from the shows, because the way you have to train horses to be successful there was no longer acceptable to us. 20 years ago, it was enough to have the horses washed, nicely dressed up maybe and they then went to a show to perform. A really good horse had every chance of winning. But as time went by, it became all about the sponsors, who were more important to many show organizers than the horses, who are the real actors of the show. It was all about the money, to put it briefly. That's why today we prefer to meet with other breeders at the stud or at an event without the atmosphere of a competition generating winners and losers".

The horses and the owners of Al Qusar Stud all live together in a large historic farm surrounded by eleven hectares (110,000m2) of pasture land and with 21 large and bright horse stalls. Working with horses on the farm, farming and pasture care defines the lives of the residents there. "We are not here in this area by chance today, but because Dr. Nagel needed assistance at Katharinenhof and asked me if I could help out there. I agreed, because it was a new challenge for me, which I find very exciting, even if I have my own breeding strategy based on our regular horses. in breeding a successful line. We also feel very comfortable here in this village, we have a lot of contact with our neighbors, there are many studs and horses in this area and everyone helps everyone here". The horses at Al Qusar Stud are known for their beauty and good character. Indeed, it doesn't take a show judge to determine that. The straight Egyptian bred "Asil Arabian", or the classic Arabian type from the Nejd, the south of the peninsula of Saudi Arabia dominates the pedigrees of the horses in terms of genotype. As far as the phenotype is concerned, the Al Qusar horses are typey people-oriented horses with a lot of charisma and nobility. They come across as light and elegant, displaying calmness and composure. "We cannot turn back the wheel of time, the original Arabian from the Nejd desert does not exist anymore, but in the pedigrees of our mares you can still find exactly these ancestors. We try to breed by selection an Arabian horse that primarily represents classical beauty and the Arabian character that made it possible for these horses to develop an intensive relationship with us", Volker Wettengl describes his breeding concept. What criteria were used to select the stud's foundation horses? Robert Schlereth. "First of all, the broodmares must be beautiful and, in addition to good legs and a good croup with classic tail carriage, they must of course have type and character. As far as pedigree is concerned, the generations of parents and grandparents are most important to me. I try to avoid heavy horses in the pedigree. Many breeders of Straight Egyptians look at the pedigree first. I look at the mares first. If they don't trigger any emotions in me, they are out of the question for our breeding, even if the pedigree is considered particularly valuable. Maida Bint Mohssen was such a mare. She was not perfect, but she had these beautiful big black eyes, the fine typey face and an enormous charisma. When she was later imported to Qatar by Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Thani and became one of the foundation mares of 62 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

Al Rayyan Farm, her daughter Mashahana Al Qusar established the first important mare line at our stud. It was only later that I realized the importance of her famous Dahman Shawan bloodline. Also, the purchase of her sire, Teymur B (Assad x 214 Ibn Galal I), whom I was able to acquire in 1996 as a 2-year-old at the State Stud Babolna in Hungary, was rather a spontaneous and emotional decision. The fact that his sire was Assad, a famous son of Ansata Halim Shah and that his dam came from the beautiful Tamria line of the Dahman Shawan family was less important to me at that moment. But the history of our stud and the offspring of these horses shows that in the end phenotype and genotype must go together and quality comes from both." Not only the Dahman Shahwan family, tracing to Farida and Tamria are represented in the stud, but also a group of mares of the Siglawy Jedran Ibn Sudan strain represent the fine and typey Al Qusar horses. Root mares are the small bay El Thay Bint Maheera, whose daughter Muneera Al Qusar by Teymur B was able to establish her own family at the stud. The second one was Naafisa Al Qusar by KP Nameed out of Hayat II, who goes back to Mahiba. Today there are their third and fourth generation foals at the farm. How were you able to finance the stud? Robert Schlereth: "Only through hard work with the horses, countless show performances and training sessions were we able to implement our long-term strategy and acquire our foundation mares. It was crucial that we did not sell our own first good foal for good money right away, because even if that would have helped us for a moment, we would never have gotten to know if our breeding concept was right that way."

Three Ansata mares were leased or purchased, as initially the Ansata Halim Shah aspect in Teymur B's pedigree was to be strengthened. Ansata Queen Nefr came, whose dam, Ansata Nefertiti, is also an Ansata Halim Shah daughter. Ansata Princessa came, she was a daughter of Prince Fa Moniet and through her dam Ansata Jahara, an Ansata Halim Shah granddaughter. Through Bagdady, another daughter of Ansata Halim Shah came to the stud. Over the years, new experiences were added, new mares and new foals. The foundation mares were handpicked and selected according to the highest standards and all the rules of the art, because the contribution of the mares is more influential than that of the stallion, in addition to genetics through pregnancy and education of the foal. Moreover, a broodmare at Al Qusar must be a good mother. It was soon realized that it was better to acquire a few very good mares than to own a larger herd of mediocre mares. Little by little, the offspring at the stud formed a group of impressive young mares from their own breeding. Last year the AK Nawal granddaughter FA Nefilim joined the group. She was at the farm for mating with the already successful young stallion Majd Al Qusar (NK Nadeer x Mashahana Al Qusar). After much urging with the owner, Robert Schlereth and Volker Wettengl were finally able to buy this mare. She gave them a beautiful filly this year, Authentic Nadirah. The successful breeding of Arabian horses is a long-term commitment, and at the beginning it requires a good concept to be in place. But with time, experience and results play an important role and the strategy may need to be readjusted. The easiest way to do this is to use different stallions flexibly. At Al Qusar, however, Teymur B was used for many years without moving increasingly to inbreeding. In fact, this strategy has brought the stud a lot of success. His cross-bred offspring are very successful, both at shows and under the saddle. www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 67

Majd Al Qusar Junior Stallion at Al Qusar Stud From the root mare Mashahana Al Qusar, the successful daughter of Teymur B at the stud, her son Majd Al Qusar was selected as his successor. The young stallion with the large black eyes and small ears, representing the Dahman Shahwan line of both his parents, already has successful offspring. His sire, NK Nadeer (NK Hafid Jamil x NK Nadirah) from Dr. Nagel's Katharinenhof Stud, has passed on to him his impressive charisma and great trotting action, while his gentle character is certainly not only due to his parents, but also to the horse-friendly husbandry at Al Qusar Stud. "Our horses must be brave and curious with a clear mind and have a good nature. Visitors must also be able to touch them. But our breeding goal is not only to maintain and perhaps improve the Arabian type in the best manner, they must also have a healthy, athletic body," says Volker Wettengl. "Not only type and trotting action, but athletic ability, coupled with trainability, is one of the most desirable qualities. Whether our Egyptians can also be performance horses, that depends on the goals of the potential buyer. We do everything we can to give them a good basis for this," adds Robert Schlereth. www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 69

Fa Nefilim Who in the farm takes care of the foal births? "In spring, when the foals come, we both take care of the night watches and the foal births. It is of course very exciting to experience whether the foal lives up to our expectations. There are many horses I have bred that come close to my ideal. But one probably dreams of the perfect foal all one's life. But who knows- the next foal that is born could be our best? After all, I hope that with our breeding we have contributed to the preservation and improvement of Egyptian Arabians and I hope that we have been and will continue to be an inspiration to other breeders as well. The Arabian Horse Weekend in the Netherlands is organized by The Stoop family, which consists of Pieter, Ine, their daughter Annelieke Stoop-Hesen and her husband Ralf Hesen. Usually organised in May, the Arabian Horse Weekend is the kick-off to the outdoor season and provides for a great experience for young horses that are new to the showring. The Stoop family has a great passion for the Arabian horse, and animal welfare has always been very important to them. They strive to make their show a great first experience for young horses, by providing ample rest in the safely set up stables and by creating a show ring in which the horses have enough room to get acquainted with the many new impressions. And not for nothing: many horses and
especially yearlings that claimed their first medals on the lucky Brabantse showground have found their way to the winners circle at big shows such as Menton, Paris and Aachen! The Arabian Horse Weekend always has been, and still is, a family affair! Annelieke is responsible for admin, show office and marketing (and much more). Pieter and Ralf are responsible for facilitation. With her catering and hospitality experience, Ine is responsible for the VIP area and the catering so guests can relax and enjoy a lovely show with great food. In 2001 the Stoop family bought their first Arabian purebred: Paroeska (1992, Paraquay x Knitova), who still is with Annelieke. With

After successfully competing in dressage competitions, the family first organized a dressage competition for Arabian Purebreds in 2003, followed by the first show in 2004 and two dressage competitions yearly. They also quickly found their way to breeding under the name Lazize Arabians, and Paroeska gave them no less than five beautiful daughters of which two are still with the Stoop family. The Stoop family has always tried to keep matters in their own hands, and it is no surprise that they did just that with the winners’ garlands in 2007: they started making them themselves. Seven garlands for the medalists and one for the Best of Show quickly grew into no less than 65 for the medalists, special awards and three Best of Show garlands in 2022. Each and every one hand made by Pieter and Ine Stoop. A massive task that is started months in advance. And every year they try to be as original as possible, creating something new, keeping a bit of an element of surprise to the prizes! The International C-show was first organized in 2012, dividing the weekend in a National show on Saturday and the International show on Sunday. In recent years there was simply no more time for the under saddle classes, but the Stoop family is still actively involved in the organization of all-round events as well as competing in them. This quickly grew into the famous Wall of Fame for which the handlers compete for years to be on the Wall of Fame next year. 2018 marked the 15th anniversary of the Arabian Horse Weekend. Of course, there were beautiful big trophies for the winners as well as the handmade flower garlands. In celebration of this special anniversary there was a
lottery as well in which breedings to world renowned stallions could be won. Some of the resulting foals have been showed at the Arabian Horse Weekend since! An in depth aftermovie made by Arabian Insider completed the festivities, and is still very dear to the Stoop family. In 2020 Covid-19 turned the world upside down. Many shows were canceled, the season seemed lost, people had to stay home. Yet, the Stoop family insisted on bringing some joy and fun during this challenging year and

Anyone who has ever attended one of the legendary WAHO conferences will usually never forget it. These conferences are traditionally embedded in the history and culture of the host country. The Arabian horse has been bred and domesticated on the Arabian Peninsula and the neighbouring western and eastern regions for several millennia. In this respect, those WAHO conferences in the Arabian world of origin have always been a deeply impressive experience. Unforgettable are the pre- and post-Conference tours, through which the host country

SHOWS AND EVENTS establish a connection between the participants and the Arabian horse History and presence in their country. The conferences in Syria and Oman were unforgettable, and Qatar and Bahrain were very impressive, and the discussions and lectures were followed by an insight into the life of the breeders and their horses in a contemporary world. Jordan joins the ranks of fascinating countries that had a lot to show the participants in an authentic environment. The pre- and post-conference tours made the participation in the WAHO conference an exciting experience with so much learned about a fabulously beautiful country, its people and history.

THE DAY VISITS Jerash Archaeological Site Jerash was one of the ten biggest cities of the Roman Empire, and one of the largest and bestpreserved archaeological sites of Roman architecture in the world, outside Italy. It is also known as the ‘City of 1000 Columns,” or the ‘Pompeii of the East”, possibly because it lay hidden under sand for centuries. It has an unbroken chain of human occupation dating back more than 6500 years. It may look small on a map, but it’s packed with historical wonders and authentic local charm. Jerash and Petra are Jordan’s two most visited attractions.

Ancient Amman and Jordan Museum
SHOWS AND EVENTS
Amman is a city of contrasts, a unique blend of old and new. Modern buildings built around and amongst the remains of ancient civilisations. Originally built on seven hills, it now spans over an area of 19 hills, and almost half of Jordan’s population is concentrated in the Amman environs. Jebel Al Qala’a is one of the original seven hills, and the Bronze Age Citadel ruins are here, both Roman and Islamic, and the Roman Temple of Hercules. Byzantine history is represented by the columns and mosaics from an early church. There is a stunning view of Amman and one can look down on the Roman Amphitheatre with its 3 tiers of seats for up to 6000 people, and the smaller restored theatre, the Odeon. Visitors get a perspective of the city’s incredible history. The Jordan Museum tells the story of Jordan chronologically and thematically, covering the environment, food production, visual art and architecture, cultural exchange and trade. Politics and the military, communication and writing, industry, religion and daily domestic life. One is encouraged to explore the Kingdom’s past present and future.
Mosaics of Madaba and Mount Nebo Madaba is often called “The City of Mosaics” and there is plenty to explore. The vivid 6th century Byzantine mosaic map shows Jerusalem and other Holy Sites. The Madaba Institute for Mosaic Art and restoration, trains students in the art of making, repairing and restoring Mosaics. Mount Nebo is believed to be the place where Moses was buried and is one of the most revered holy places in Jordan. At a height of 1000 metres, the top of the mountain, offers amazing views over the river Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, Jericho and Jerusalem. There are more interesting mosaics in the Moses Memorial Church, and the Serpentine Cross standing just outside, is symbolic of the brass VHUSHQW 0RVHV WRRN LQWR WKH GHVHUW DQG WKH FURVV RQ ZKLFK -HVXV ZDV FUXFLÀHG

The Al Ma'wa Wildlife Reserve in Jerash province is 48 kilometres north of Amman, it covers 140 hectares that were donated by the Jordanian Agriculture Ministry. It was established in 2011 by the Princess Alia Foundation in partnership with the international animal welfare organisation Four Paws. It is the largest sanctuary for rescued and mistreated wildlife in the Middle East. The project provides a regional solution for rescued wild animals and offers emergency relief to animals from war zones, irresponsible private owners, zoos that could or would not look after them properly, and illegal wildlife trading. $QLPDOV WKDW FDQQRW EH UHWXUQHG WR WKHLU FRXQWU\ RI RULJLQ RU UHOHDVHG LQWR WKH ZLOG ÀQG D SHUPDQHQW home at the sanctuary. :HOO FDUHG IRU DQG ZHOO IHG DOO WKH DQLPDOV OLYH LQ VSHFLHV VSHFLÀF HQFORVXUHV WKDW HQVXUH WKH animals have enough space and appropriate conditions that best suit their natural needs, and they all appeared content and very healthy.

A Day at the Dead Sea
SHOWS AND EVENTS
The Dead Sea is totally devoid of life, except for some primitive microorganisms and algae. At just over 400 metres below sea level, the water is 10 times saltier than the sea, and very rich in chloride salts. These mineral salts have healing powers to treat and rejuvenate skin complaints. The thick black mud also has health giving properties for skin ailments. For over 2000 years people have taken advantage of the natural, outdoor health spa. The best-known side effect of this very salty water is that it is very buoyant. Floating and relaxing are supposed to be easy, but putting your feet back down on the seabed, less easy. A challenging and amusing way to enjoy an afternoon dip.
Petra - the “Rose Red City” “Petra is one of the world’s biggest mysteries,” says one of the Jordanian guides, “and 65 per cent of Petra is still underneath our feet, hidden by dust.” The UNESCO World Heritage site of Petra has been well documented and written about because it is such an amazing experience. Nothing really prepares you for your visit. The 2 km walk along Al Siq between the towering rose red rock carvings and hollowed out tombs, gives you time to imagine the Silk Road traders walking along the same route 2000 years ago, to the capital of the Nabatean Kingdom. The sophisticated water system evolved over hundreds of years and was amazing in its skill and effectiveness. Water from natural springs and rainwater was stored in cisterns. An intricate and ingenious system of channels carved through the rock, and clay pipelines carried water throughout the city. It is estimated that up to 30,000 people had water all year, and could even cope with the arrival of large trade caravans. Petra is a huge site and there are temples, tombs, monasteries and a theatre carved into the rock face, and guides, tourist, camels and horses. There is so much to see and learn, but however far you walk down the valley or up into the hills, you will end your visit knowing that you have been somewhere special.

Travelling to “The Golden Triangle of Jordan”, 4- Days Tour The title and description of this 5-days tour was tantalizing and attracted two coach loads of conference attendees to go on the adventure. Starting with a visit to Petra – “The Rose Red City, half as old as time”, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and followed by the less well known, Little Petra. Wadi Rum and the beautiful desert landscapes promised a memorable experience. As a complete contrast we would travel to Aqaba, and then end the tour at the edge of the Dead Sea. We left Amman for the three-hour drive to Petra, and there was plenty to see of the Jordanian landscape and interesting information provided by the excellent guides.
I am sure Petra has been on many people’s wish list for years, and images and impressions formed in our minds, but I don’t think anything prepares you for the wonder of this historic and archaeological city. The path or “Al Siq” is almost 2 kilometres long and at times as narrow as 3 metres. The rose-coloured rocks surround you and tower above you making it feel like a fortress in places. It is possible to ride in a converted golf buggy, or on a camel, horse or donkey, but you can sense the history of the old trading routes and burial sites as you walk along the route. Camel trains, incense and spices must have created a heady cacophony of noises and smells. After about 30 minutes you walk through a particularly narrow passage and catch a glimpse of tall carvings, and suddenly you come out into an area that is dominated by the spectacular Treasury Building, 24 metres wide and 37 metres high. From there the walk becomes wider and opens into a valley that takes you past the Theatre, Royal Tombs, street of Facades, colonnaded street and many more features. The historical site covers about 60 square kilometres, so there is more to see than is possible in a short visit, but it is breathtaking and a privilege to have seen and experienced. Petra is a symbol of Jordan, as well as the country’s most-visited tourist attraction, which has up to 1 million visitors a year. Little Petra is also Nabatean, and lies just to the North of the main Petra site, but receives fewer visitors and appears calmer and more atmospheric. This may be because it is also known as Siq al-Barid, meaning the ‘cold canyon’, and it certainly felt cooler! It is thought to have housed traders on the Silk Road, and the EXLOGLQJV VXJJHVW WKDW LW ZDV XVHG E\ PRUH DIÁXHQW PHUFKDQWV HVSHFLDOO\ WKH 3DLQWHG 5RRP ZLWK LWV YHU\ UDUH ancient frescoes. Historically less is known, but it is a fascinating visit. After those two remarkable places, we had a two-hour drive to digest what we had seen, and wonder what the desert trip would reveal. Gradually the landscape changed and we were in the desert, beautiful red colours and distant hills, another UNESCO World Heritage site, Wadi Rum. It is also known as the Valley of the Moon and is a maze of monolithic sandstone and granite rockscapes. We were divided up into two different hotels/camps, and
prepared for our afternoon activities. Horse or camel ride or a 4x4 jeep tour. Many different cultures have inhabited the area, and we were able to see petroglyphs, inscriptions and temple ruins, as we explored the area in or on our chosen transport. Just before sunset we were taken by the guides to a suitable position to watch the sun disappear behind the hills. I would like to say that it was romantic and peaceful, but in reality, there were many groups of tourists enjoying the changing colours and waiting for nightfall. Back at the hotel and we were looking forward to Bedouin Zarb Dinner. When it comes to the culinary delights of the desert, the wadi is well-known for a meal that is cooked underground. "Zarb is a centuries-old method of cooking, where the bedouins place food on coal and cover it for two to three hours," according to the guide. Before it was served, we went and watched a pile of sand scraped to one side to reveal a carpet! More scraping and digging, and a lid appeared. When this was raised, two men grasped a metal bar and lifted a tower of shelves covered in vegetables, rice and chicken. Delicious – served with salads and breads and fruit and sweets. Before sleeping, there was an opportunity to sit outside and enjoy the expansive unpolluted skies. Next morning was unfortunately rather windy so that the Hot Air Balloon trip was cancelled. Such a shame, DV Á\LQJ RYHU GHVHUW LV SDUWLFXODUO\ HQMR\DEOH On the way to Aqaba, we had a quick stop at the Al Hijaz Railway. Quite bizarre to see a railway line and reconditioned steam train in the middle of a desert setting.

The journey south was quite short and it was interesting to see Eilat in Israel so close.Aqaba is Jordan’s only coastal city, a strategic location at the northeastern tip of the Red Sea between the continents of Asia and Africa, and important port throughout thousands of years. It is considered the third part of the Golden Triangle. During the afternoon we were taken on board a boat that took us on a short harbour tour. The water is so deep and clean, that several species of coral can survive, so we boarded a smaller boat with underwater windows and were able to see a few examples. Next morning before our journey to the Dead Sea we stopped for a brief look at Aqaba Fort. It offers a glimpse into Jordan’s history. Through the ages it has been used as a Pilgrimage stop for travelers, and as a military base for battles. Finally, we arrived at the Dead Sea, and having found our hotel rooms, the next experience was to ‘swim’ in the ‘salty lake’. At 430.5 metres below sea level, it attracts many visitors who are amazed and amused by trying to move in such ‘dense’ water. Sadly, the Dead Sea is receding at a swift rate, the surface area having almost halved since 1930. Proposals and ideas continue to search for a solution. We were taken to a special place to watch the golden hour and have dinner. Perched atop the edge of the Zara Mountain range cliffs, the Panorama Dead Sea Centre is famous for the stunning sunsets and excellent food. A wonderful evening in a unique position with both new and old friends, made during the past 10 days. Such memorable days. At the beginning of the Conference, we were promised that Jordan would entertain and look after us and they certainly lived up to that statement.

For decades in the world of Arabian horses, the word ‘Polish’ has been synonymous with ‘perfect’, especially when it comes to the mares born in the Polish state studs. 200 years of documented breeding of Arabian horses in Poland has resulted in establishing some of the most appreciated and admired dam lines in the world. These important families have survived the turmoil of wars, uprisings and communist regime to flourish in the last few decades and have influenced the breeding of Arabian horses in every part of the globe. It is impossible to cover all the magnificent mares born in the Polish state studs in the recent years but this selection of mares that reached for the highest laurels of the most prestigious shows should put some light on what a precious gene pool the Poles have gathered and have so persistently preserved in the three state studs of Janów Podlaski, Michałów and Białka. The meritorious dam line of MILORDKA, better known as the champion producing ‘E’ line, is one of the most numerous and highly valued Arabian families not only in Poland but also in the world. Originated in 1810 in the Princes Sanguszko’s Stud of Sławuta, the family is nowadays represented mainly in Michałów State Stud and it has become their trademark in the recent years. The snow-white or flea-bitten, and more recently also bay, representatives of ‘E’ line have been among the most sought-after broodmares in the world due to their extreme femininity,
ESTOKADA 1951 (Amurath Sahib x Saga) harmonious built and powerful movement. Between the correct but rather unpretty foundation mare ESTOKADA 1951 (Amurath Sahib – Saga / Hardy) that joined the Michałów broodmare band in 1953 and her fleabitten great - granddaughter EMIGRACJA 1980 (Palas – Emisja / Carycyn) that started the subbranch of the family known for remarkable refinement, there was an unprecedented breeding progress, unseen anywhere else in the world. All thanks to one of the most talented breeders of Arabian horses and a true visionary when it comes to selecting stallions, first director of Michałów State Stud, Ignacy Jaworowski as well as director Jerzy Białobok and his wife Urszula who continued Jaworowski’s work in Michałów. EMIGRACJA’s show career can hardly be called impressive, especially when it is compared to the number of trophies her own descendants have won over the years.
Named ‘just’ Polish National Reserve Champion Senior Mare in 1991, EMIGRACJA however became one of the most cherished Arabian broodmares who commenced the dynasty of champions known to all Arabian horse aficionados. Thus, it was right to award the beloved broodmatron of Michałów with the WAHO trophy for outstanding individuals of the Arabian breed, which she therefore received in 2006. Twelve out of fourteen EMIGRACJA’s foals were fillies, six of whom were sired by the epochal Polish stallion EUKALIPTUS 1974 (Bandos – Eunice / Comet).

After a short break, she came back to the showring in 2013, achieving even more as PSAIAHF Bronze Champion, Abu Dhabi International Gold Champion, DIAHC Gold Champion, All Nations Cup Gold Champion, European Gold Champion and World Gold Champion Senior Mare. A year later, she again won the title of DIAHC Gold Champion Senior Mare and paused on her path to glory until 2018, when she became Gold Champion Senior Mare in Dubai and Sharjah. The crowning achievement in EMANDORIA’s show career was the title of World Platinum Champion Senior Mare in Paris in 2018, which together with the other titles makes her one of the most highly decorated mares in the history of the Arabian breed. As the authentic ambassador of the Arabian horse, she was also the recipient of the 2016 WAHO trophy. With mares as successful as EMANDORIA, the breeders have high expectations when it comes to the quality of their progeny. It must be said that EMANDORIA did not disappoint, producing a very successful sire, EMERALD J 2010 (by QR Marc 2005), for Christine Jamar of Jadem Arabians in Belgium, as well as a few superb daughters who themselves became valuable broodmares for Michałów Stud. ESTARDA was also one of director Ignacy Jaworowski’s favourite mares. It is a shame that ESTANCJA rebred to GADIR the following year produced a stallion that later became gelding, while ESTARDA gave only two stallions before she died, yet this is the unpredictability of breeding. Without a doubt, what MONOGRAMM did for Michałów Stud could not have been predicted either. He left behind a hundred and twelve fantastic fillies and colts, of whom the grey EGZONERA is another incredible individual representing the ‘E’ line. Tail

In the MILORDKA dam line, there are also mares that have never won a show but have still shaped the modern Arabian horse scene as highly influential broodmares. Such a priceless mare that needs to be mentioned here is the grey ERNESTYNA 1989 (Piechur – Erwina /

One of EKSTERN’s excellent daughters that represents ‘E’ line at her maternal stud is the captivating chestnut EKLIPTYKA 2003 (out of Ekspozycja 1992), a full sibling to the best son of EKSTERN, the grey ESPARTO 2002, who unfortunately died at the age of thirteen without leaving his heir. Thermo Thermography by Domenico Bergero, Cynthia Préfontaine
THERMOGRAPHY
Science and technology are often applied to the world of horses with extreme caution – if you see the glass as half full – or extremely slowly – if you see it half empty - and so some well-known techniques take sometimes decades to be recognized and applied on a large scale. On the one hand, this is certainly due to the cost of equipment, which naturally tends to decrease and so the same technology becomes more and more accessible to a wider audience. On the other hand, there is a certain lack of dynamism in the system, which does not react to the new proposals as quickly as it should. The use of thermography in horse medicine is a good example of this.
WHAT IS THERMOGRAPHY?
Thermography is the use of an infrared imaging and measurement camera to see and measure thermal energy emitted from an object. Thermal energy, emitted as infrared rays, is light that is not visible because its wavelength is too long to be detected by the human eye; it is the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that we perceive not as light but as heat. Everything with a temperature above absolute zero (i.e. above 273 degree C) emits heat in the form of infrared rays. Even very cold objects, like ice cubes, emit infrared rays. The higher the object’s temperature, the greater the IR
148 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
radiation emitted. Infrared rays can be seen and the quantity of radiations measured through scales of gray or by showing different temperature areas in different colors, allowing us to see what our eyes cannot, i.e. the heat emitted by an object. Infrared thermographic cameras produce images of invisible infrared or heat radiation and provide an important non-contact tool to measure temperatures. Nearly everything, including inanimate objects, emits infrared light and gets hot before it fails, making infrared cameras extremely cost-effective, valuable diagnostic tools in many diverse fields of application, such as biology, volcanology, ecology, engineering, mechanics and others. As infrared imaging develops and improves and thermographic cameras become more and more sensitive, new applications are continually created and developed. The applications that we are particularly interested in are those connected with biology and, especially, veterinary medicine, which benefit from thermographic cameras that can detect surface temperature changes by a tenth or even one hundredth of a grade Centigrade. Digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI) and the subsequent analysis has led to considerable progress in assessing and comparing data as well as exact and time-deferred measurement of temperatures.
VETERINARY
ography IMAGING DIAGNOSTICS
Thermography deserves to be given a place in medicine among diagnostic techniques (those required to understand the reasons of a disease, rather than curing it) and particularly among imaging diagnostics, which benefits also from other more or less recent tools: x-rays, scans, tomography and others. From this point of view, an important aspect of thermography is its execution time. Whereas diagnosis with traditional x-rays is rather long, due to the time required to develop the radiographs (but digital equipments are also available today, very innovative compared to the traditional methods), thermography imaging can be obtained immediately, saved in digital format and processed straight away through a laptop computer. In addition, the cost of a single image is very low, once the initial, high cost of the thermographic camera and its application software has been amortized. However, as it is often the case with modern technology, the newer models are generally better and less expensive than their predecessors, which is what usually happens with digital cameras or computers. Essentially, once the thermographic camera has been purchased, a veterinarian is encouraged to use it under many circumstances, with the two-pronged result of providing useful and accurate information to the client and investigating new and interesting fields of application.
THERMOGRAPHY AND VETERINARY
Measuring the surface temperature of living organism is not a new science. Ancient Greeks were already observing the drying-up process of mud spread thinly on the human body, and the fact that the mud dried up more quickly on certain body areas led them to conclude that some parts of the human bodies were warmer than others. Veterinary application of thermography can be
seen as the natural heir of these ancient observations. Thermography is just a technologically advanced evolution of the Greek mud technique; it shows which areas of the body are warmer and which are colder, enabling us to compare various parts on both sides of the body. The superficial temperature of a body part changes according to many variables: ambient temperature, higher or lower flow of blood in capillaries underneath the skin, presence of local alterations etc. Local temperature variations are at the basis of veterinary applications. When a tissue or an organ does not work properly, the body produces a reaction called inflammation. The typical sign of inflammation is the heat produced on that area, which spreads to nearby tissues. This way, the skin covering an inflamed area (an organ, a joint, a muscle) appears of a different color compared to the neighboring areas or to the so-called counterlateral part, i.e. the corresponding part on the other side of the (healthy) body. When the inflammation is superficial and violent, the temperature differences can be felt also on the palm of our hand. But when these differences are less than 2ºC, it becomes difficult to detect them directly, so thermography becomes indispensible. In addition, the horse’s coat somehow mitigates and masks the differences, given the well-known insulating properties of hairs. Thermography can highlight the inflamed areas and so localize the problems that would otherwise be difficult to spot. The sensitivity of the device is obviously of utmost importance in order to obtain concrete results, but the models that are available on the market today are capable of identifying temperature differences of just 0.01°C. Thanks to thermography, the inflammation to a tendon

can be diagnosed up to 2 weeks before this can be done through other techniques. A similar advantage is often fundamental in proposing the most appropriate treatments and in avoiding that further damage is caused by getting the horses to work in far from perfect conditions. Once the inflamed area is identified, this can be appropriately treated so that a normal condition than be gradually restored. Thermography helps also in this sense, as it assesses the effectiveness of the treatment adopted to control the inflammation. This aspect is less obvious and secondary than one might think. As every owner knows, being able to assess the progress of an injury is often arduous, and the tools are not always objective. The gradual reduction of the inflammation, on the other hand, can be easily seen through a thermpographic camera, to the joy of the veterinarian and of the owner. In this sense, the thermographic camera is a previous tool also, if not above all, for the veterinarian, who can quickly ascertain the appropriateness of the treatment and, if necessary, recommend timely changes in the cure.
THERMOGRAPHY AND EQUINE MEDICINE
Having the chance to see inflammation at an early stage is of significant interest in equine medicine, for example to check the health status of limbs in case of lameness that is difficult to define. Detecting a change in superficial temperature can often be used as a “guide” to then proceed with an accurate control aimed at the area where the temperature change has been detected.
150 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
The typical case is that of a joint found excessively warm through thermography. This is subsequently checked through very specific and accurate x-ray tests, which highlight an injury overlooked at the first check. In the same way, it is possible to highlight muscular problems that are difficult to detect through other techniques. Thermography can also be useful to diagnose abscesses inside the hoof, to confirm the rare cases of shoulder lameness or to highlight signs of inflammation more in general. The main applications of thermography to the equine field are connected with lameness and muscle, tendon or joint inflammations. However, the field of application has not got such clear demarcation. With a thermographic camera we can notice the increase in temperature of a horse after a standard workout, determining the level of fitness, a term that every sports person knows well. We can also study its effectiveness in dispersing heat. This application, which seems to come out of a sci-fi movie, is already used on men and on race dogs, in combination with appropriate blood analyses. The results obtained are excellent. Once the saddle has been removed, we can also detect which areas were more loaded, hence more prone to risks in the future. Thanks to this, we can also determine the best saddle that “sits” more comfortably on each individual horse. By analyzing the thermographic images we can also ascertain local decreases in temperature due, for example, to a lower blood flow, as in the case of thrombosis. Finally, we can also measure the heat emitted into the surrounding environment, assessing, albeit indirectly, the energy use of an individual or a group of horses. q

FOOD for the by Domenico Bergero & Cynthia Préfontaine z photos by Tutto Arabi Archive
Summer is a critical time for every horse, but for sports horses it is even more so, as they find it difficult to get rid of the heat produced during exercise. Therefore, it is necessary to act to improve the sports horse’s ability to withstand the seasonal dangers. For grazing horses, summer is typically the period in which activity is concentrated in the early hours, evening hours or even at night. During daytime, the activity is significantly reduced, if not totally absent. During these hours, horses enjoy standing in the shade of the trees lazily chasing away the insects. Nothing more. On the contrary, working horses do not always choose the environment they prefer the most or the hours in which they can train. Often it is the rider to decide, who in turn is pressurized by lots of daily commitments. This way, sports horses are those mostly at risk at this time of the year. When we talk about food for sports horses during the summer season, it is worth clarifying some key concepts, connected yet separate. It is necessary to differentiate between food in the studs, food preservation and rehydration.
Food in the studs
First of all, the quantity of food given to the horses should not be reduced, as it often wrongly assumed. The need for food is in fact connected with weight and type of exercise, not with the whims of weather. However, that the diet must be adapted to the feeding quality and routine is absolutely true. In this season more than any other time of the year, horses require a balanced diet from an energy point of view, which provides the correct amount of energy and other nutrients. At this time of the year, 152 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
horses spend an awful lot of energy to maintain the body temperature through regulatory mechanism such as sweat; otherwise, the temperature would tend to rise. By doing so, the horses utilize energy but also get rid of water, electrolytes (sodium, potassium and chlorine) and also proteins. That is why it is necessary to change the quantities. Body condition (presence and quantity of subcutaneous fat) and weight are two of the key factors to take into account. During the summer months, obese horses can become prone to a whole range of problems, because subcutaneous fat affects their ability to dissipate heat. In this case, if the external temperature is too high and particularly humid, as it is often the case in some stables with poor air circulation, the horses can be subject to health problems such as heat strokes. When it comes to feeding overweight horses, the portions must be appropriately reduced to help them gradually lose weight - also in relation to the exercise required - avoiding sudden drops in the total quantity of food. This can be done by changing the type of food and feeding routines. For the other horses, you can start by changing the quantity of hay or other fodder used. Fodder is the main source of fiber in food and is very important to guarantee the correct functioning of the gut and the intake of nutrients produced by microorganisms found in the large intestine (cecum and colon). The fiber is used mainly thanks to the fermentation process, which produces a remarkable quantity of heat. In the summer, the quantity of hay can be reduced to about 1 kg a day, in order to diminish the entity of this process without compromising the

VETERINARY
fundamental function of the large intestine, which incidentally supplies important vitamins, very useful in summer. For horses kept on a bed of straw, it might be advisable to leave the quantity of hay supplied unchanged, but use another type of bedding other than straw, which is excellent in winter. This way it is possible to avoid the intake of too much fiber, as horses often love it, especially if it’s straw from wheat. Conversely, for grazing horses it is very important to ensure the presence of many shady areas. In order to help the organism work less, busy dissipating heat in summer, you can also avoid feeding them during the hottest hours. Practically, in the morning they must be fed at dawn, rather than in the morning, and then after sunset, rather than in the early night. This rule obviously clashes with stud schedules and staff requirements, but it is an excellent measure if you can organize shifts. With regards to concentrates, avoid sudden changes and products too rich in protein, as the large quantity of nitrogenous waste excreted makes kidneys overwork in a period in which less urine is produced due to sweat. In these cases, the risks are considerable. You can also use compounds that are light on the intestine, as they are simple to digest and rich in water.
154 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
During the summer month, the smaller quantity of hay can be balanced with a higher quantity of cereals or other foodstuffs (about half a kg more). In this case, the total energy of the food is essentially the same, but the heat produced by digestion is lower. If we supply simple mixed foods, it is also possible to increase slightly the portion of barley and reduce that of maize. We can also add a higher amount of bran, which has a refreshing effect on the intestine. If, instead, we opt for compound fodder, we can give our friend one that lightens up the work of the digestive system and adds water, at least once a week. If the horses are very tired and made lazy by the hot temperatures, we can integrate their food with electrolytes and cooking salt, but also with water-rich produce such as apples, carrots and other vegetables or, even better, let the horse graze for a few hours, preferably on a green and luscious polyphyte meadow.
Food preservation
High temperatures are dangerous not only for our horses. Many types of fodder do not withstand heat due to their composition, as they contain ingredients that are damaged by high temperatures. Molasses, for example, tend to ferment when it is hot or, in the best
scenario, tends to become more liquid, creating serious issues about its preservation and use. The sun and the heat produced by its rays make fats become rancid much more quickly. This phenomenon can lead to a quick degradation of fats, creating a smell similar to that of rancid butter, and cause gastroenteric problems in the horses. After purchasing bags of fodder or bulks of cereals, in the summer it is necessary to preserve them accurately, to avoid problems. Each stud should have space to store fodder, which can also be used for other types of food and supplements. This way, the bags will not be kept outside where humidity and heat can damage their content. The food storeroom should always have – but even more so in the summer – good ventilation and a pleasant temperature, should not be overfilled with bags and should be kept without dust. In this room, it would be useful also to have insect and rats repelling systems. It is best never to use altered food: apart from not giving the full intake, it might make the liver work excessively or, in the worst cases, lead to fully-fledged diseases.
Rehydration
Sweat is the main mechanism used to dissipate heat. In horses, sweat is produced all over the body by the socalled sweat glands, which are more concentrated in the areas where the nerves pass, on the back and between the legs. In the area of the neck, particularly visible is the quantity of albumin excreted through sweat, which takes the form of the white foam created by the rubbing of reins against the skin. The quantity of sweat excreted depends on numerous factors, such as the physical condition of the horse and the room temperature and humidity. Sweat consists mainly of water, electrolytes (predominantly sodium, chlorine and potassium) and proteins. During the summer period, there is an excessive sweating mainly due to the weather conditions and the abundant loss of water, electrolytes, proteins and a higher use of energy by the organism, so as to reduce and then maintain the body temperatures at normal levels. Horses can use lots of water when they are training in hot and humid environments. In these conditions, endurance horses can excrete up to 500 g per km and even more (especially less-trained horses). Therefore, during the hot season the horses must always have water near-by, as it compensates the loss of fluids and the amount of electrolytes the animal needs. For horses living in a loose box, it is necessary to clean the every day, so as to avoid potential obstructions or breakages, which would prevent the horses from drinking. Grazing horses who do not have drinking troughs must be supplied with water in specific containers, preferably located in shady areas, where the sun does not shine
directly and so the water evaporates less. In order to counteract the abundant loss of electrolytes occurring during training and competitions, it is best practice to supplement the food with some salt, which adds sodium and chlorine (food quantities are usually very rich in potassium, the third main electrolyte). The quantity to be supplied can range between 20g and 100g, depending on the amount of activity and intensity of exercise. In many conditions and during demanding training sessions and competitions, it is also important to use supplements readily available on the market, which supply not just electrolytes but also other minerals and vitamins, many nutrients involved in the regulation and dissipation of excessive body heat. These products can be purchased as a powder to be mixed with water or food or as a paste. If they are given after tough training, it is always better to ensure that the horse drinks because, if that does not happen, it might lead to the opposite effect. The horse may find it difficult to drink water due to an altered sense of thirst, or after intense competitions. In this instance, the presence of salts in the stomach attracts liquids, thus worsening the dehydration of tissues. So make sure your horse drinks, even after the most unrestrained ride! q www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 155

All his life, the stallion Salaa El Dine (1983 – 2007) had a private as well as a public function. The private one was his role as Chief Sire Number One at Katharinenhof Stud, in Germany. The stallion was an important element in the breeding concept of Dr. Nagel, for many years and the current President of the World Arabian Horse Organisation, “WAHO“. From an early stage, Dr. Nagel had translated his passion for Arabian horses into a strategy. He was determined to fulfil a desire of his, planning to maintain the famous but critically endangered horse population of the Arabian peoples in the South of the Arabian peninsula, the Nejd region, and to revive the breed in his stud. Salaa El Dine, one of the “essential elements” of this genetic concept, was greatly successful in living up to that role. Even whilst alive, he became hugely popular – without ever having made an appearance at an Arabian show. His excellent offspring more than served to establish his fame in five continents. His public function as a sire – with his gene pool used by mare owners from many countries, all trying to achieve successes similar to those his breeder Dr. Nagel had achieved – was marked by great and small successes, as well as occasional failures, just as is the case with all publicly serving sires. Salaa El Dine was, however, by no means a closed
book, as there were detailed “directions for his use” to be read in Dr. Nagel’s book “Hanan, the Story of an Arabian Mare”, which was written in the 1990’s and was precise and fitting on the subject of Salaa El Dine. Salaa El Dine was something special. In contrast to most famous stallions, he was neither a projection of the vanities of his owner, nor a money making vehicle, and he was also not just a lucky strike. He was the last foal of Hanan and was sired by Ansata Halim Shah, destined for a special role in the long-term experiment taking place at Dr. Nagel’s Katharinenhof Stud located near Bremen in Northern Germany. At the beginning of the 1970’s, Dr. Nagel imported his exotic foundation mare Hanan and three other mares, but with less influence, from El Zahraa near Cairo, taking a circuitous route to Germany via Babolna in Hungary, and founding Katharinenhof stud with them. Hanan’s first foal, Ibn Galal I by Ibn Galal, was born in 1972 while she was still stabled in Hungary. She produced 11 foals in all, three of whom have made priceless contributions, not only to the future of Katharinenhof, but also to Straight Egyptians throughout the world. These three horses were Ghazala (by the Bukra son Ghazal), Jamil (by Madkour I), and Salaa El Dine (by the peerless Ansata Halim Shah).

reach his goal. He had been able to search through many Arabian countries, through the USA and Europe, and had defined his breeding goal according to what he had seen. He had a clear mental picture of the standard he was aspiring to, and for him, the only horses that came close to the ideal he was seeking were to be found at El Zahraa, but he definitely wanted to arrive at his goal, and he would not leave anything to chance until he had reached that ideal. So he wanted his Arabian horses to have the following features: • they must have a chiselled Arabian face with big black eyes and black skin, • they must have good tail carriage, elevated during every movement, • they must have very good movement, and • they must have a docile and 164 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
friendly character. He intended to improve the body overall as well, having become aware that his breeding stock could do with a better croup and shoulder. Based on that assessment, he realised that not only did some of his horses require improvement in these areas, but that it was a general problem of most of the Egyptian horses. His logical conclusion was to start a systematic search for a stallion who was able to improve these aspects, finding him in 1983 in the two yearold Ansata Halim Shah of Judith Forbis’ Ansata Stud in the USA. He brought him to Katharinenhof Stud for two years, and, in exchange, sent Jamil, the son of Hanan and Madkour I, to the US. The decision was a milestone in Egyptian Arabian horse breeding, and the results were to change the looks of Egyptian Arabians throughout the world.

Dr. Nagel made a decision not to double up on mares with Ansata Halim Shah blood, but, rather, to put Salaa El Dine over Jamil daughters, as he believed that Jamil’s daughters would be perfectly complemented by the infusion of Ansata Halim Shah blood. In order to fix the superb type of Hanan’s sons and daughters, Dr. Nagel experimented with putting Hanan’s sons over Hanan’s daughters, initially using Jamil, and after his death, Salaa El Dine. The results were astonishing. To Ameera, he produced Nahaman, a handsome steel grey stallion whose grey daughter NK Nabeelah (out of Nashua) was a leading broodmare at Katharinenhof until her untimely death in 2011. Jamil was intended to be the perfect match for the Katharinenhof mares after returning from America, but he died young and mysteriously. So once again, Dr. Nagel needed to find a fitting stallion to replace his leading sire, when Hanan, who had been served by Ansata Halim Shah, gave birth to her last foal, little Salaa El Dine. Ansata Halim Shah, as well as his sire Ansata Ibn Halim, and his grandsire Nazeer were stallions who could produce good mares as well as good stallions. Later on, Salaa El Dine was to follow in those footsteps, proving to be an outstanding sire of offspring of both sexes, and these were soon to be found, not only at Katharinenhof Stud, but also outside of it. Few other stallion before him ever influenced overall breeding as extensively as he did. Having an outstanding Ansata Halim Shah son in Salaa El Dine to put over his mares,

whose daughters are revered and much sought after around the world today. Nashua (Salaa El Dine x Lotfeia) produced a series of lovely fillies by Nahaman, of which NK Nabeelah and Bint Nashua were the pick. She also nicked brilliantly with the Salaa El Dine son Adnan to produce three exquisite grey daughters in NK Nasrin, NK Nadirah and N.K. Nada. Both NK Nasrin and NK Nadirah have been retained by Dr. Nagel and are probably his best broodmares. N.K. Nada went to the very impressive Ezzain Stud of Usamah Al Kazemi in Kuwait, and was sold recently for a king’s ransom to Al Wahab Stud in Qatar. Nashwa became an outstanding broodmare for the tastefully designed and beautifully laid out Ajmal Stud of Mohammed J.K. Al Marzouk in Kuwait. We need, at this point, to step back in time to Salaa El Dine, and to examine the influence that this stallion has had on both Katharinenhof and on a world wide basis. Here, we can only deal with his influence on the future of Katharinenhof, but it should be pointed out that he was also the sire of many outstanding horses for other breeders around the world, such as RN Farida (from the Hadban Enzahi daughter Noha), one of the most beautiful mares
ever born, and the signature mare at Al Rayyan Farm in Qatar. RN Farida is also the dam of the superlative young sire Safir Al Rayyan by Ashhal Al Rayyan, a grandson of Salaa El Dine. Salaa El Dine only sired 54 foals for Dr. Nagel, but what a list it was! Nejdy, Nahaman, Adnan, and so on. Apart from the impossibly beautiful three daughters from Nashua already mentioned, Adnan sired other lovely mares in NK Yasmin (out of Helala, and now at Ezzain Stud in Kuwait), NK Hallah (out of Asfoura, and now at El Adiyat Stud in Kuwait), Samsara Nihal (out of Assal, and now at Seven Oaks Arabians in Australia), and Asma Bint Asfoura (out of Asfoura, and bred by Annette Hedley of Briery Close Stud in U.K.). He also sired the colt Mubarak (1990 – 2012) out of the Obayyan mare Myrna, who arrived in Iran as a gift to the breeder Mrs. Mary Gharagozlou. During his lifetime, he produced more than 1000 foals, giving to the Iranian Asil Arabs a better type. Also, many of his offspring had enormous success on the racetracks and showgrounds in the country. 1992 was another defining year at Katharinenhof, as this saw the birth of Helala, by Salaa El Dine out of the Jamil daughter

After 1995, Salaa El Dine’s role was largely taken over by his sons and grandsons like NK Hafid Jamil, NK Kamar El Dine, NK Jamal El Dine and NK Nadeer. However, he was not done yet, and in 1996 he sired the very lovely grey mare, NK Aischa out of Amarilla, and this mare became a very important mare for the Ajmal Stud in Kuwait. In 1997 Salaa El Dine sired NK Asila, a full sister to N.K. Nariman. She has produced beautiful daughters to N.K. Hafid Jamil, being NK Aziza (retained by Dr. Nagel), Amarilla HM (owned by Seven Oaks Arabians in Australia) and the bay Jamilla HM sold originally to Ezzain Stud in Kuwait and now owned by the superb new stud of Abdulrahman Al Jasmi in Bahrain. In the following years Salaa El Dine sired many important horses in Europe and around the world, such as the black stallion TB Yasir, out of Sulifah, a Jamil and Salaa El Dine granddaughter, and the type maker Al Whaid El Dine (Salaa El Dine x Gioia APS) and many other well-known horses. In 2007 Salaa El Dine sired his last foal for Katharinenhof, in the grey stallion NK Sharaf El Dine out of NK Aziza. This valuable stallion spent two years at Tre Balzane Stud in

Dr. Nagel acquired two Dahman mares from Ansata Stud, being the Jamil daughter Ansata Gloriana, and, at a later point, Ansata Ken Ranya, who was by Salaa El Dine out of the Jamil daughter, Ansata Prima Rose. In 1993, Salaa El Dine’s best foal was probably Nour, a grey filly who became an important broodmare at the Samsara Stud of Donald Duke in the U.K. In 1995 the lovely grey Sanaya daughter NK Layla was born, and another birth was the stunning grey full sister to Helala, Ansata Helwa, who became an important broodmare, initially for Omar Sakr in Egypt, and thereafter for Al Khaled Farm in Saudi Arabia. Finally, the incomparable NK Nariman (out of the Jamil/Ghazala daughter Amarilla) was born. NK Nariman is the dam of some wonderful foals, mainly sired by NK Hafid Jamil. These include the mares NK Jurie and NK Lolowah (both at the Ezzain Stud of Usamah Al Kazemi in Kuwait), and the brilliant grey stallion NK Qaswarah, who is siring truly astonishing foals of both sexes at Ezzain Stud, and NK Nessma (at the U.K. Stud of Hassanain Al Nakeeb). Italy and belongs now to Bebo Stud of Mila Khamis. From Salaa El Dine’s 54 foals at Katharinenhof, at least 26 (nearly 50%) would be classified as outstanding horses, all of whom have bred on. These figures alone represent an extraordinary breeding career for a stallion, and the results were achieved from a variety of bloodlines – a truly remarkable feat. In addition, of course, Salaa El Dine sired many outstanding horses of both sexes for other breeders in a number of countries. Mention has already been made of the incomparable mare RN Farida in Qatar, the stallion Crusader in Sharjah and, inter alia, there is also a fine stallion in Salaa Sihr (out of the Jamil daughter Ansata Nile Magic) at Pearsons View Stud in Australia. Salaa El Dine had firmly fixed the type which has become known as the “ Nagel type” around the breeders’ world. Good stallions who will transmit their outstanding qualities are the basic potential of any stud, as “if you don’t infuse with good stallions repeatedly, the offspring will always slip down into mediocrity” (Federico Tesio). His offspring is living proof of the fact that Salaa El Dine is a top stallion who can do without flaunting displays. Still, when Salaa El Dine became 20 years old, visitors to the birthday
party asked why the stallion had never been to a show, and Dr. Nagel’s answer was: “Arabian horses in history were used for so many purposes; they grew up under desert conditions or even here in Europe, and a uniform standard of evaluation never existed. I think today we have one standard, called Show. And for many years now, many breeders have been selecting their Arabian horses for the show. But from the point of view of a breeder, show criteria can’t be the only criteria, and they are not my criteria. So I invite you to reflect on the standard you like and you are searching for. That means you must make your own choice and then breed very consistently to reach the goal”. Thanks also to Salaa El Dine, Katharinenhof Stud produced many fine horses which were much sought after, particularly by breeders in Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, as the Arab countries became aware of the need to buy back their history and their heritage. But during this period, the foundations were being laid for a major quantum leap in refinement and quality, which would seal the future of Katharinenhof and of many other studs as well.

Who were his most important sons? As to my own stock, that was definitely Adnan. Then there is his brother Safir who also had significant influence on the breed, serving in Doha on Al Rayyan Farm and through his son Ashal Al Rayyan. Another important son of Salaa El Dine is Mubarak who was sold to Iran quite early in his life. He had crucial influence there and was able to improve the breed country-wide. Another horse to be mentioned might be
Crusader, in the UK, who was very successful on the racetrack before he made himself a name as an inheritor. Later, there were a lot more whose development I was not able to follow closely, but generally I noted that Salaa El Dine is a very good match for Ansata lines. Myself, I have a rather closed population of broodmares which he served, so it was rather easy to assess the results. As to outside mares, I never advertised my stallions, and most breeders coming to the stud have those lines themselves, but from the results of which I know, you can conclude that matings with the Judith Forbis lines continued to bring the best results.

What are your long-term results with Salaa El Dine, now that the 2nd and 3rd generations fill the pastures of Katharinenhof Stud? Salaa El Dine has improved the overall conformation of my horses. In particular, he transmitted a markedly good shoulder, his long neck and the good topline. And the next generation also feature these positive characteristics. I can’t imagine my breeding stock without them any more.

Was Salaa El Dine a milestone in Katharinenhof Stud? He was a landmark and “watershed”. He was incredibly important for my whole concept of breeding, which is still true for today. There are rumours that enormous sums have been offered for Salaa El Dine from the Middle East. Salaa El Dine was my horse. You don’t sell a horse you have that kind of relationship and attachment to. It’s just as if you were giving away the soul of the stud. A horse
who accomplished so much for your own breeding – you can’t but keep such a horse. What recommendations can you give on the subject of using Salaa El Dine offspring? It’s easier to predict the results if you breed with related blood and lines. Generally, however, it’s true that mares should be beautiful to be considered for breeding. When Ansata Halim Shah was at my place, I chose 35 hand-picked mares for him. The results were great, with the exception of just 2 or 3 foals. Later, when he was in the US, he was more generally advertised and used, outside of Ansata Farm, with the result that the number of successful offspring decreased markedly. There is now offspring of his that don’t live up to the results he achieved in Germany. The same is true for Salaa El Dine. Stallions are to improve the breed, but the mares need to provide a quality basis for the stallion to stand a chance to transmit his big points. Successful breeding works only if you have two good parents who are mutually compensative. Monika Savier

Dine was the best of the sons of Ansata Halim Shah? The stallion that accomplished most, due to his great influence, is definitely Salaa El Dine, followed by Maysoun. In the Middle East, there is Ansata Hejazi who is highly influential, and Al Adeed Al Shaquab, of course. There was also El Thay Ibn Halim Shah, unfortunately passed away early, but he had already started to attract attention as an important son of Ansata Halim Shah.

- THE LEGACY OF MAHIBA -
A desert flower with the kindest eyes in the world Some horses born to greatness, but have little time to achieve it. The mare Mahiba was one of these. In the brief time on Earth she was given, she produced only four foals. But these were enough to create a legacy far greater than other mares achieve with far more offspring. by Betty Finke Photos by Joanna Jonientz, Gigi Grasso, Rick van Lent, Erwin Escher, Irina Filsinger, Archive Dr. Nagel, Glenn Jacobs, Dr. Ali Hawaj, Nicole Sachs, Martin Kubat
Mahiba was foaled on August 22, 1966, at El Zahraa. She was the third of four full sisters by Alaa El Din out of Mouna, arguably the greatest daughter of the celebrated “Queen of the Nile”, Moniet El Nefous. The two oldest of the four sisters were retained by El Zahraa while the two younger ones, Mahiba and Moneera, came to Germany. One day when Mahiba was just a yearling, a young man came to El Zahraa to see the horses. His name was Dr. Hans Nagel, and he had already encountered Arabian horses at the state stud of Hungary, Bábolna. But he had never seen anything like this before. He describes his first encounter with Mahiba as follows: “Exotic – that was the proper word for this small, peculiar head. Delicate it seemed, with a slightly rounded, broad forehead, a groove bisecting the length of the profile.
172 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
The nostrils opened wide and trembling, showing pink inside as they laboured to breathe out in the heat. The ears were short, much shorter than usual, and pricked alertly. The dark eyes were round, almost perfectly circular, and stood clearly out from the little head. Yes, the huge eyes were dark – and appeared even bigger because of the grey-black skin surrounding them. The whole body appeared dry and clearly defined, a fine skin covering bones, sinews, veins, and muscles; elasticity, lightness, hardiness and strength were evident (...) This little horse was not shy, not sulky. Its eyes were friendly, calm, and good-natured, a little bored, but alert and expectant as it approached. Trust instead of fear, serenity instead of tension (...) This was my first encounter with a true Arabian mare, exotic through and through, refined as a desert flower with the kindest eyes in the world.”

Heritage, Heartbreak, and a Friend in Need Dr. Nagel bought Mahiba, along with several other fillies, which for reasons of quarantine were first taken to Bábolna. They all grew up there and produced foals at Bábolna first. Mahiba had a daughter by Ibn Galal, who was retained as a broodmare under the name of 18 Ibn Galal. She produced two colts there, one of them a Shagya-Arabian stallion who became a chief sire. Mahiba’s first foal at Dr. Nagel’s stud was a full sister to 18 Ibn Galal, Sabah. Dr. Nagel describes her as different from her sister, more reminiscent of her sire. She produced several licensed stallions, the best known among them being Sherif Pasha (by AnsataAbbasPasha),
who was World Junior Champion in 1985. Her son by Mohafez , Sameer, was not a show champion, but did well as a sire and has international descendants, especially through his black son DF Siraj. Sabah’s Jamil daughter Sehnab established her own family. Sabah’s dam line also continues at other stud farms through her daughters Shahwana (by El Moniet) and Salua III (by Mohafez), Mahiba’s next two foals were sired by Mahomed (Hadban Enzahi x Malikah). The first was a colt named Ibrahim. El Thayeba and the Dynasty of Mona II Mona II, Mahiba’s last foal, may well be called her dam’s greatest triumph. She became one of the foundation mares for Dr. Hans-Jörg and Cornelia Tauschke’s El Thayeba Stud, which is continued today by Cornelia Tauschke and Klaus Beste and last year celebrated its 50th anniversary, making it one of the oldest straight Egyptian studs in Germany. It was there that Mona II firmly established her place in the history of the Arabian breed.
Mona II, Ibrahim’s full sister, was to be Mahiba’s last foal. As any horse breeder knows, joy and heartbreak lie close together. After only three foals, Dr. Nagel lost his beloved Mahiba to complications following pneumonia. Devastated, he called his friend Dr. Burgert, director of Bábolna, to tell him what had happened. And Dr. Burgert proved a true friend indeed: after hearing of Dr. Nagel’s loss, he sent Mahiba’s first daughter, 18 Ibn Galal, to Katharinenhof as a replacement for her dam. In Germany, she was renamed “Kis Mahiba”, meaning “Little Mahiba”, and she proved a phenomenal broodmare, producing seven fillies for Dr. Nagel. All of them became broodmares. The oldest, Maysouna, was by Kis Mahiba’s own sire Ibn Galal. She was an astonishing broodmare herself, producing 13 fillies and five colts, of which four were licensed. She is best known for her son Maysoun, one of the best sons on Ansata Halim Shah in Germany, champion of the last stallion licensing and a prolific and successful sire of both sons and daughters. She was a daughter of the homebred stallion El Thay Mahfouz (Ansata Selman x El Thay Mahfouza), who carries two lines to Mahiba through Ibrahim himself. She was also her dam’s most look-alike daughter and a perfect example of her dam line. But the “colt curse” struck once more: Mayassa delivered five colts in a row. Cornelia Tauschke was beginning to despair of keeping the family going at El Thayeba. She finally gave up the struggle and sold Mayassa to Claudia Scheidel, Al Ryah Arabians. But meanwhile, Mayassa pulled the same trick as El Thay Mabrouka had done before her: once she had changed hands, she promptly produced a filly. Fortunately (having gotten wise after what happened with Mabrouka) Cornelia Tauschke had made provisions for such a case, and the filly returned to El Thayeba as a future broodmare. Mayassa didn’t stop there, though; she went on to produce another two fillies! So now, after having all but vanished, the Mahiba family at El Thayeba is going strong once more and has grown considerably. Mayassa’s first filly, El Thay Mouna Al Ryah, has now been joined by her dam Mayassa, who has come home again in hopes that she will have more fillies in the future. But that’s not all, because there are two more exciting new arrivals from the Mahiba family at El Thayeba.
Along with Mayassa and her daughter came the 4-yearold mare Moniet Al Ryah (Nader Halim x Maheebah Al Ryah). Her breeder and owner Claudia Scheidel has been reducing numbers, which is why these horses became available. The very appropriately named Moniet Al Ryah is not only of Mahiba’s dam line, but carries a total of six crosses to Mahiba: two through Kis Mahiba and four to Mona II, including both her sire and dam in tail female descent. The other new arrival is the stunning 2021 colt NK Laziz (NK Nabhan x NK Lateefa), tailing back to Kis Mahiba. This chestnut colt was one of the stars at Dr. Nagel’s open day in 2021, every inch a little superstar, wowing the spectators with his style and presence. He was not actually for sale, since Dr. Nagel has tried for years to breed an outstanding stallion from this family. So it took

His full sister in blood, NK Lara (NK Nabhan x NK Lina), also born 2021, was sold to Doha Stud and very successfully shown at the Katara International Arabian Peninsula Horse Show, where she was awarded Silver Champion Yearling Filly, and at the Kuhaila Straight Egyptian Arabian Horse Show in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where she took the crown of the Gold Champion Yearling Filly. She is very similar to her brother in type, conformation and colour.

Today there is only one horse at El Thayeba that doesn’t descend from the Mahiba family. Most of them trace to her two or more times, through both Mona II and her full brother Ibrahim. Now Laziz is growing up at El Thayeba, and the future has never looked more exciting. The lines of Kis Mahiba and Mona II may soon be joining to create the next thrilling chapter in the story of the little mare with the kind eyes, who only had four foals, but became an icon of the breed.
