ABU DHABI

It is February 22, leaving from Milan with a few degrees on the thermometer we cannot even imagine arriving in Abu Dhabi with 30 degrees and a wonderful sun that makes the body and mind rejoice. We are in Abu Dhabi the capital of the United Arab Emirates, a wonderful city full of places to visit even for those who after the event want to treat themselves to a few days of vacation. In addition to the nature that you can enjoy with camel or Quad rides in the desert, you can visit the wonderful Sheikh Zayed Mosque, the Louvre Museum Abu Dhabi, the Ferrari Museum, Emirates Palace and much more. For the next 5 days we will attend the second edition of the AL SHIRAA ARABIAN HORSE SHOW organized and under the patronage of HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Hazza Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Already in its first edition it had turned out to be one of the star shows in the Middle East and I am happy to confirm that it is to all intents and purposes, thanks in part to an outstanding staff that boasts H.E. Mohamed Ahmed Alharbi as Chairman and 5 members in the high organizing committee. The show is definitely in
good, experienced and professional hands. Among the members Mrs. Antonia Bautista Stud manager of Al Shiraa Arabians, Mr. Mumtaz Faiz Allaf, Mrs. Samantha Kettle, Mr. Karim Hussein Mustafa and Mr. Amer Wael Sahloul. HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Hazza Bin Zayed Al Nahyan is also a very busy woman with other activities such as being Chairwoman of the Fatima bint Hazza Cultural Foundation, Chairwoman of the Fatima bint Mubarak Ladies Sports Academy and is also Owner and Founder of Al Shiraa. The stables venue where the ECAHO-affiliated and EAHS-supported event is held is “AL FORSAN,” a luxurious equestrian center a few kilometers from the airport. The show had a total of 276 horses entered, for judging in the ring 9 judges were invited: Mrs. Anna Stojanowska, Mr. Ali Shaarawi, Mr. Elyas Ebrahim Faraj, Mr. Gianmarco Aragno, Mr. Bialobok Jerzy, Mr. Klaus Beste, Mr. Lucas Gozdzialski, Mr. Mohamed Machmoum, Mr. Sufian Taha. In the technical committee of the show Mr. Mohamed Alharbi is the Show Manager along with his brother

Hamdan and Mrs. Lulua Almansoori is Supervisor. General coordinator is Mr. Ebrahim Basheer. On the computer score Mr. Peter Biju, the two outstanding voices were Mrs. Sara Alakour and Mr. Eric Blaak. We media also had our coordinator, Mrs. Razan Abdullah who followed us with patience, kindness and great professionalism. Mrs. Lizette Svensson and Mr. Eidha Almenhali took turns in the ring. The DCs were Dr. Mohamed Hammad, Dr. Mohamed Mohsen, Dr. Abdel Whab Ben Ali Amira and Dr. Farah Zouaghi.

One of the most important aspects of a show is the care and well-being of all participants. When I write everyone, I am talking about the people in charge, the guests, the horses who had spacious and well-cleaned stables, the guests in the VIP area, and even us, the media. A lavish catering served food and drinks throughout our stay at the show. Four great days because Al Shiraa Arabian Horse Show has all these characteristics to be a great event. Even the timing dare I say Swiss with classes starting and ending on time, which is tricky when you have to handle horse numbers like

this, but thanks to everyone’s professionalism the goal was achieved. The rich prize money rewarded the classes up to 5th place with AED 30,000 (about 8,000 euros) to 1st, AED 20,000 to 2nd, 15,000 to 3rd and 10,000 4th and 5th. Considering that the 276 horses were divided into 20 categories in total I would say that is a substantial contribution for breeders. The largest prize money is obviously what was given in the final championship: AED 100,000 to the Gold medalist - 70,000 to the Silver and 50,000 to the Bronze. A cash contribution was also given to the

Jordan is a peaceful country deeply steeped in history, but today a modern and open state, a

of refugees is an enormous challenge for this small

Christ, until it fell into the hands of Alexander the
Great and was later occupied by the Romans. In 635 Amman became Islamic and 900 years later it was part of the Ottoman Empire.
In 1948, the small town of Amman became a large
city due to the influx of Palestinian refugees fol-
lowing the creation of Israel. Many refugees also came after the Lebanese civil war, after the at-
tack on Iraq and later the Syrian civil war, to in-

The 2022 CONFERENCE HRH Princess Alia Al Hussein.
“It is a great pleasure and honour to open this Conference on behalf of His Majesty King Abdullah,
who is very enthusiastic about it though not necessarily so much involved with horses himself,
as I am, he has been on the Council of the stud for the past 30 or 40 years.
We are very happy to have you here and it’s a great pleasure that it’s finally in Jordan, we have been
Members of WAHO since the 70’s actually but our
stud Book was accepted in the early 80’s. We had obviously hoped that you would be here sooner but then COVID intervened, and we are just very
happy to see you all, people from so many parts of the world and being able to get together and visit
our country which I am sure you have heard a lot about in previous.
The current theme that we’ve had in all the meet-
ings, is how horses and the Arab horses in particular, unite people. I think your presence here is proof
of this and we hear about many cases where in spite of great adversity; political, physical and otherwise,
people have got together and surmounted all the obstacles to get together for this one love that they all have.
I was thinking this morning, what is it about the
horse? Yes, we are united because we love them, and their beauty certainly attracts us, but it is more than that. It’s something very deep and innate in
them, courage certainly, the fact that they tolerate human beings with good and bad habits, they are always willing, they empathise, and have kindness.
Perhaps when we are around them, they trigger that
and we see it in each other in a better way and I think that’s possibly why we are so very harmonious at these meetings and why we are able to surmount
other differences or disparities between us, which in the run of the mill world come between us”.

you have not refused an invitation from Her Royal Highness, so please bear with me.
When we talk about conferences and events such as this in Jordan we are very, very proud to host them.
I am Jordanian, and it is the Jordanian tradition to welcome guests and visitors. Jordan’s population is
a clear reflection of how our location has given us constant, interaction with the rest of the world, as a major trade route, as a major strategic hub in the
region, so welcoming visitors is very much part of our tradition, part of our culture, part of our DNA.
I am going to tell you an anecdote, it involves horses. A tribal Sheikh, a prominent outspoken loyalist to
His Majesty King Abdullah the First, our founding King, had a famous Arab stallion which was the envy of many, including one of his competitors.

of course rendered the assistance, not recognising
that his horse was stolen. There was the horse, 50 yards away with his new and very short-lived own-

you don’t tell anyone that I was fooled and tricked

as beautiful could not be taken or transferred in ownership because of a trick.
It gives you an idea not only about how the Arabian horse was valued but more importantly about the
mind-set of the people who own these horses, they viewed them as trust not as property.

and post Covid economic fallout. However, we are also exceptionally diverse in climate, in terrain and in people so I do encourage you to take the opportunity to
interact with the widest spectrum of people. You will occasionally feel that we are a little bit like the Spartans
of the Middle East, because when you talk to people
you will find that almost everyone’s brother or cousin
or father served in the armed forces, in the Jordan Arab Army.
Not the Jordanian Army, the Jordan
Arab Army, so named because it was an indicator of
Jordan’s willingness to recruit Arabs from all over the region, not exclusively as a Jordanian National Army. And the simple fact is that one of the backbones, one

of sporting and cultural heritage here. Our Army is a defensive army for certain, a proper army and a capable army for certain, but it is much more to
every Jordanian. It’s also a deep sense of pride, it’s a deep sense of belonging, it is the unifying factor
and the levelling playing field for all Jordanians and the aspiration of the many young Jordanian men
and women to serve in the institution because of the sense of unity and cohesion that it provides, so we thank them for their support. (…)

Ministries represented here and from the Amman Mayor’s office.
But it is part of the magic that I, with great pride, say that Princess Alia brings to all of us. She has always been an older sister, a wise head and a wise voice to
all of us and she has an incredible knack of bringing
people together in the kindest possible way. The fact that so many people were willing to support this

Of course, the concept of purity is an ethnic one and not one that can be proven genetically over a long

Furthermore, WAHO must deal with ever new
challenges in our global world of the “Horse Industry”. Today the problem areas are the difficult
harmonization of the administrative procedure of registration, which is subject to different national
regulations in many countries of the world. In addition to individual ambitious breeders and
breeding stables, there is also the reproduction industry with its lobbying, which has increasingly
exerted influence on the reproduction of Arabian
horses in many countries and has, under certain circumstances, allowed unlimited embryo transfer

Each representative of a member country presented in a Tent Pegging, demonstrated by the mounted police
short report the situation in the domestic Arabian horse
association. The main focus was on statistical results, such as the number of annual foal births, imported
and exported horses, use of embryo transfers, national events of horse races, shows or endurance races.
It is interesting to see the different markets that have
developed for the horses and their use in the various countries and the extent to which breeders have also adapted to these challenges. The globalization of
markets has meant that it is less about origin and regional provenance and more about using useful
genes for the purpose and benefit of the horses and
their owners. Show horses are similar all over the
world, as are racehorses or endurance horses. Today, there is a world of difference between these three types of Arabian horses. There is no doubt that breeders
select and “improve” their horses according to different commercial and cultural demands. One can see that
countries with a busy racing business have relatively stable birth rates (Turkey, France, Tunisia, Morocco,
UAE etc.). On the other hand, countries with a lot of against WAHO rules. In this respect, the biennial WAHO conference with the meeting of the national
studbook leaders (voting delegates) is absolutely
necessary in order to discuss the new facts and to vote on the problems.
Some Results from the Delegates Meeting
The registrars, custodians of the studbooks of the
Arabian horse in all member countries discussed in
show business or original breeding like Asils, suffer
more from recession and economic crises, apart from the Gulf States, of course.
In 2013, the USA was in first place with 3282 foal registrations; in 2021, there were only 2189 foals
registered. In Germany, too, there were 700 registered
foals in 2013, in 2021 there were only 376 foals. In Italy, too, the number of foals born to local breeders
has fallen sharply, but this is less evident in terms of numbers because in this country, as in the Netherlands

Qatar, KSA, UAE and Kuwait, but also Egypt, are

English Thoroughbreds. But this could not be
done with some Member States with advanced
reproduction technologies, because the industry has a great interest in this market. Whether breeders
earn from it is questionable, because the method is very costly and risky, for the mare owners. The
market has long been saturated and the prices
breeders get for their horses today under normal circumstances are more than inflationary. Moreover, the epigenetic influence of the recipient mare is generally underestimated. In addition, there is the
permanent stress caused by hormone doses and
medication to which a broodmare is exposed from which several embryos are to be flushed per year. This has nothing to do with animal welfare anymore
and WAHO could take up the topic under different aspects at the next conference.

SHOWS AND EVENTS Based on the registrars’ reports, one could see that in
2021 only 11 countries did not register ET foals. (Norway, Pakistan, Syria, Iran, Algeria, Japan...)
Instead, many countries accept ET unlimited. (USA, South Africa, Qatar, Hungary, Netherland, Austria, Belgium,
Canada, Chile...). Some limit the number of ET’s, like Egypt (2) or Poland and Sweden (1+1) That means one own and one ET per year, and per Arabian mare.
Poland has the additional rule that the recipient mare
must be an Arabian mare, a rule worthy of imitation if one thinks of the influence of the recipient mare on
the embryo during the 11-month pregnancy plus 6 months of upbringing.

In some countries, since the end of the cavalries, the state studs have been regarded as historical
sites, as living museums only. In a few countries, on the other hand, these studs had a supporting role
in educating the regional breeders. Some of them breed with great success until today and are also active as equestrian event managers. But that is no longer enough today.
The state studs could play an important role in saving the Arab breed in the future. For ever new
world crises and an imminent climate collapse, concrete reform ideas are emerging: less growth, more state targets up to state promotion through
selective supportive measures. This is already working in some countries.
For reasons of space, here is a brief summary of the four interesting reports, the original versions of which will be printed in full in the verbatim booklet of the conference proceedings.

Numbers of horses and breeders have been
decreasing dramatically in Europe after the world
economic crisis in 2009, 20-30% loss per year ever
since. Many private studs, and state studs and institutions have been closed. Equestrian sports, racing and shows are facing similar trends.
As some parts of the world seem to be growing out of equestrianism, other parts of the world show
encouraging development of the Arabian horse breeding.
Horses have survived – and have contributed to
the solution of – many critical periods in history.
Crises as we know well have provoked series of farsighted changes in economics, agriculture, the arts
and sciences, education, civil administration, only thinking of leaders like Muhamad Ali the Great

Conflicts, climate change – essential challenges that
we are facing around the world. The global crises do
not leave the horse sector in general and the State Studs in particular untouched in times of enormous social, political, economic and ecologic problems.

State Studs are living heritage sites. Most of them derive from the time when horses were
essential companions in transport and agriculture,
representation and warfare. After the technical revolution, the number of breeding institutions declined.
Most of them are under the authority of the state,
some have been already turned into foundations or run as private enterprises.
Those institutions are not only places of animal production. They are also facilities full of atmosphere
with magnificent buildings, parks and cultural landscapes formed by horse management over centuries. They are unique heritage sites preserving
three forms of heritage: tangible, intangible and living heritage.
The studs are places of horsemanship developed and refined over many generations of dedicated horsemen aiming at harmony between men and
pattern of human needs. Many breeds owe their them even in times when they were less popular, such as the draft and working horses, and helped them to a renaissance as a leisure or therapy horse.
Thus, the national studs contribute significantly to the preservation of biodiversity.
Horse heritage needs sound science. We owe it to our history and to our horses to find cooperation and research in the fields of genetics, biodiversity,
behaviour, welfare, culture and ecological questions. State Studs are predestined for scientific studies due to their management, horse numbers and facilities.
The equine sector presents various environmental assets, with special topics in each country, allowing the equine to be part of the current agro-ecological
transition. Horses cannot exist without grasslands.
Permanent pastures are important for biodiversity, carbon storage and for the protection of water quality.
Let us use the state studs also for promotion and the welfare of the horse. Collaboration between private
and state studs and other institutions all over the world allow exchange in many fields, give tribute to the public and thus, contribute to maintain horse heritage.

Through the ages it has been almost the same in many countries, firstly breeding cavalry war horses and then useful horses in agriculture, travelling, racing and now endurance and showing.
The Mughal Empire had Royal Studs breeding many thousands of horses, so that “during the 19th Century, Bombay was considered one of the greatest and best market for Arabian horses.
When the British East India Company took over,
there was more need for remounts, and in 1902 a Remount Stud was restarted at Ahmednagar, in Marashtra Province, the only stud devoted to
breeding pure Arabians in substantial numbers.
Pakistan still breeds Remounts at Mona in the Punjab.
Syria did not have a National Stud, although the
tribes in Syria had been the centuries old source of thousands of horses for Empires and Royal Studs
around the world. In 1985 The Basel Assad Centre for Arabian Horses was founded, and a breeding programme put in place specifically to preserve and
promote the Syrian Arabian as a National Heritage and Syrian treasure.
In Egypt, in 1898 the Royal Agricultural Society (RAS) was founded under the patronage of HM King Farouk I. In 1953 the RAS became the Egyptian
Agricultural Organisation (EAO) which along with a succession of excellent Egyptian directors continues to care for the Stud Farm of Al Zahraa and its heritage.

*El Shaklan was sired by Shaker El Masri, a Morafic son out of Zebeda, bred by the Egyptian Agricultural Organisation. Shaker was purchased by Sigi Siller in Egypt, who immediately fell in love with the beautiful Straight Egyptian stallion and brought him back to Germany. Upon being informed that Shaker meant “thankful” she added El Masri onto his name, which now meant “thankful to Egypt.” His life was tragically cut short due to a pasture accident, but his life on Earth was nothing but valuable, leaving behind the great *El Shaklan, amongst others, for the world to enjoy. *El Shaklan’s mother, *Estopa (Tabal x Uyamia), was born in 1965 to Osuña Escalera, Spain. *El Shaklan’s influence and ability to become a worldwide legend is undeniable. He started his journey at the first home of Om El Arab in Germany, before spending two breeding seasons in England with Pat and Johanna Maxwell (the original lease was for 3 seasons, but after the sudden death of Shaker El Masri, the Maxwells graciously returned him to Germany.) Meanwhile, Sigi had visited the US where she was captivated by the Santa Ynez valley. It was soon decided that Om El would find a new home, and after
*El Shaklan’s 1982 breeding season, he left Europe for his new adventure in America, standing first with Doug Dahmen. He spent time impressing American breeders who fell in love instantly with what they saw. In 1985 *El Shaklan was sold to Brazil to the Audi family, which received a standing ovation from Brazilian breeders. *El Shaklan was at this point 11 years old and an International superstar. He had left quite the mark in Europe and USA, and now it was Brazil’s turn.

‘The Greatest Horse Show on Earth!’ – emblazoned in bold white capital letters on an attention-grabbing imperial red background – proclaims the banner adorning both sides of the walkway above the entrance to Westworld’s iconic Wendell Arena. This decisive identifying statement implies both authority and longevity, claims the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show can rightly make as one the world’s longest running and still the breed’s largest showcase of Arabian horses on the planet. It is this annual show, modestly initiated by the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona some sixty-eight years ago in 1955, that has transformed the desert outpost of Scottsdale into the undisputed Mecca of the Arabian breed worldwide, an epicentre of Arabian horse breeding, training, trading and exhibition still unrivalled on the global stage.
SHOWS AND EVENTS
SHOWS AND EVENTS
Now encompassing eleven days of competition and nearly every imaginable discipline in which the Arabian horse competes, ‘Scottsdale’, as the show has become affectionately known the world over, remains, unquestionably, the largest gathering of Arabian horse owners, breeders, professionals, aficionados and enthusiasts from every inhabited continent on the annual calendar. There is often more business conducted, ideas exchanged and new projects initiated leading up to and during Scottsdale than at any other time during the year as a result of the optimism, expectation and opportunity inherent in this cornerstone Arabian horse event. There is something for everyone at
Scottsdale, from the novice and newcomer to the seasoned professional with decades of accrued attendance and experience. This unique ‘melting pot’ experience, once central to the best of our Arabian horse activities, still thrives at Scottsdale, ensuring that devotees of all disciplines from all backgrounds and countries of origin have the opportunity to mix, meet and mingle for over one week and a half, providing ample opportunity for everyone to enjoy, appreciate and connect with the entire spectrum of the Arabian horse industry and community. Despite a few challenges from Mother Nature – including gale force winds (that wreaked havoc on nearly everyone’s set-
SHOWS AND EVENTS
up), near freezing overnight temps and a few intermittent showers mid-week and on the final day of the show – Scottsdale avoided most of the massive winter storm the paralysed the majority of North America, including neighbouring Southern California, in the latter half of February. The sun was reliably bright and warm most days, with more show days dry and pleasant than not, resulting in only two days of rescheduled classes from Wendell to the close confines of South Hall (Wednesday and the final Sunday), and one marathon day of halter classes in Wendell on the second Thursday unlike any other in recent memory. For those who spent any amount of time watching halter classes, a division in which
Scottsdale showcases more Arabian horses than any other event in the world, the name of one emerging sire of significance was heard repeatedly when announcing entries in the winner’s circle more than any other throughout the entire week: DOMINIC M. Bred by Marino Arabians in Alabama, DOMINIC has been a global traveller of great renown, travelling first to Uruguay with Olivia Strauch, then to Al Hawajer Stud in the United Arab Emirates, on to Europe to both Osterhof Stud in Germany and Danubius Arabians in Romania, before finally returning ‘home’ to North America in the stewardship of Orrion Farms as chief sire, in residence at the newly unveiled Scottsdale ‘showroom’ as the valley’s greatest single attraction.
SHOWS AND EVENTS
132 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
SHOWS AND EVENTS
In an industry first, DOMINIC was the sire of every single yearling winner in the Scottsdale Classic division – both senior and junior fillies in addition to the senior and junior colts – as well as the second-place winner in both senior yearling fillies and colts. The was something extra about each of the DOMINIC progeny that achieved in Scottsdale – enchantingly elegant, and refined, with exceptionally well-designed heads and beautiful faces epitomised by broad foreheads, large dark eyes in luminous, perfectly placed sockets and small refined muzzles. The DOMINIC foals were all notably well balanced and harmoniously designed, with upright, exemplary forehands and an undeniable noble presence and aristocratic quality. Anticipation is incredibly high for this exceptional collection of youngsters as they mature. Watching each of these aspiring young show horses be honoured in succession, led by a reassuringly broad cross section of trainers representing breeders and owners from around the world, one could not help but feel that something transformative was transpiring, that perhaps a quiet revolution, more natural ‘evolution’ than radical departure from the norm, was underway in the breed. Time will tell if, like legends MAGNUM PSYCHE and MARWAN AL SHAQAB before him, DOMINIC M redefines the breed in his image, with Scottsdale 2023 forever remembered as the dawn of ‘DOMINation’. In another first for both DOMINIC M the sire and the industry revolutionising Scottsdale Signature Stallion (SSS) programme, the same filly won both the SSS Yearling Fillies ATH and the SSS Auction Fillies AOTH, on each occasion with unanimous consent of the entire judging panel which equated to six first place distinctions, making SERAPHIC K the most decisive winner in the long history of the Scottsdale Show. Not only did this gorgeous filly receive the biggest payout of the event, she was led to both her victories by her owner AND her breeder – the holy trinity of SSS success: Katie Hendrickson. Even more astoundingly and assuredly most rewardingly, Katie also bred SERAPHIC’s dam, VIXXEN K (by Exxalt), and was on the lead just three years ago as ‘HBO’ (handler-breeder-

owner) when VIXXEN took home the biggest paycheck as – you guessed it - SSS Champion Yearling Filly. These improbable accomplishments, achieved just three years apart, makes SERAPHIC the very first produce for VIXXEN, and the third female successive generation bred by Katie since 2015, when she purchased foundation mare STEEL MAGNOLIA TT. Katie’s triumphant trips to the winner’s circle were the unequivocal Cinderella success story of the entire show, and the ultimate ‘feel good’ moment for everyone, as we all celebrated the inspiring vision, tenacity and accomplishments of this quintessential small breeder. While the quality of breeding horses was incredibly high across the board this year
in Scottsdale, the excellence on display in both the filly and mare competition was amongst the very best yet showcased in the last quarter century. As expected, DOMINIC was in the pedigree of both the Champion and Reserve Champion Junior Fillies – LADY NICA SRA (EKS Alihandro x Lady Dominica JSZ by Dominic M) and FELIX AJMAL MALAK (Dominic M x Felix Ajmal Mora by RFI Farid) – respectively. The Senior Mare Championship contained a veritable feast of fabulous females, with magnificent mares in both the front and back rows down the line. When the more seasoned EXXALTRESS, who has never looked better or more composed in her charmed life and winner of the most competitive halter class of the show – Senior Mares Six & Seven Years of Age, was sashed
SHOWS AND EVENTS
Reserve Champion, expectations were abuzz as to exactly whom the judges had chosen as Champion. When the number 296 was read aloud, both sides of South Hall erupted in jubilation, with breeders Psynergy Enterprises – Mike Weinstein, Jean Edwards and Arturo Uribe – closest to the announcer, and Team Rae-Dawn – Murray and Shirley Popplewell and supporters – just opposite, ecstatic over the unexpected victory for ALESIA ENB (Atticus ENB x Aliyah Vision PCF by PCF Vision). This bold moving, superbly constructed showstopper was at her absolute best in both her show ring appearances, earning a first for both her breeders and owners as Scottsdale Champion Senior Mare, and emblazoning her name firmly in the history books as one
of the youngest mares ever to have earned this illustrious honour. The competition for colts and stallions in the classic division was smaller than in year’s past, but the quality was high in both divisions, with worthy winners forward in both lines in the respective championships. Amongst the Junior Colts, the judges chose the more seasoned senior two year old – the dynamic and masterfully presented BERGEN AN (Beijing BHF x Maria PCF by DA Valentino) – above both the exceptional yearling colts by DOMINIC M – DOMINICUS RAR (out of Miracle RA by Hariry Al Shaqab) and STALLONE PCF (out of CW La Stella by Na’Mous Al Shahania), choosing the elder colt, STALLONE, as Reserve Champion. In the final Scottsdale Classic

division, the front of Senior Stallions was solid bay – showcasing the effervescent young ARIA LA CROIXX (Delacroixx x La Belle Shawan HVP by FA El Shawan) and two impressive sons of supersire FA EL RASHEEM – ARIA RAKEEM (out of MD Hibbat Allah) and TAJ RAHEEM (out of RA Marwans Elygance by Marwan Al Shaqab). In the best condition of his aspiring young life, ARIA RAKEEM was chosen in a unanimous decision as Senior Champion Stallion, with the even younger ARIA LA CROIXX selected as a decisive Reserve Champion in a noteworthy clean sweep for Aria-bred stallions. Although TAJ RAHEEM was unrewarded amongst the senior stallions, he stood head and shoulders above his competition as a sire, responsible for siring not just one, but two extremely appealing Gold Champions in the International ring during the first weekend of premier halter exhibition at Scottsdale: Yearling Colt Gold Champion STA HIGH VOLTAJ (out of Rose CME by Lark RCA) and the universally admired TASHEEM PMA (out of Chiara Luna by KM Bugatti). Manuel Durini, the brilliant Ecuadorean breeder whose MD HIBBAT ALLAH (DA Valentino x Anastasiaa) was the dam of the newly crowned ARIA RAKEEM, was also the mastermind behind the International Silver Champion Yearling Colt MD SALIM (Rhan Al Shahania x MD Alihandra by EKS Alihandro), who likewise traced directly to Durini’s foundation aristocrat dam ANASTASIAA (ATA Bey Star x Showgirl SP by Shaklans Padron NA). Both Silver & Bronze Champions amongst the International Junior Colts were South American in origin, Brazilian-bred and Royal Arabians owned HAZ AL BRSB (Royal Asad x Elegance AL by Halyr Meia Lua) and KIDARK HBV (Pharoah HBV x Seduction HBV by Power World JQ). Another of the promising sons of DOMINIC M, OFW LEGEND, was awarded Bronze International Champion amongst the yearling colts, adding further prestige to the production record of his prolific dam LULU MARAJJ (Marajj x Silhouette FF by Shael Dream Desert). The Royal Arabians roster of senior stallions reigned supreme amongst the International Yearling and Junior Filly entrants, responsible for both

Silver Champions – the yearling ROYAL MIA (AJ Radman x Royal Hadara by RFI Farid) and the two year old CARTOUCHE SVB (Royal Asad x Caressable NA by Ever Afer NA) – as well as the undeniably beautiful Gold Champion Yearling Filly DIAMOND SKY (AJ Radman x OFW Jewel of Marwan by Marwan Al Shaqab). DOMINIC M scored yet another winner when reigning Brazilian National Champion KHALEESI EL LAMI RB was awarded the International Bronze Champion Junior Filly title, while ALIYAH VISION PCF (Vision PCF x Maria PCF by DA Valentino) enhanced her growing list of champion produce with Bronze Champion Yearling Filly with SHANELLE PCF (by Sultan GK) for owner-breeder Sam Peacemaker. Al Jood was the proud owner and breeder of International Gold Champion AJS SIGIS BELLE, sired by the Chilean-bred HP ALI, whose unmistakeable namesake pays homage to the late Sigi Siller, legendary breeder the filly’s dam OM EL BADRA (Om El Shahmaan x Om El Benedine by Sanadik El Shaklan).

The senior division in the Scottsdale International Championships was also fiercely contested, resulting in a pair of Gold Champions for Team Royal, whose horses were presented with consummate professionalism and in superlative condition. The undeniable crowd favourite was the Polish-bred FUERTE (Shanghai EA x Frymuszka by Ekstern), who channelled the indomitable show attitude of his late World Champion maternal grandsire to capture the well-deserved title of International Gold Champion Senior Stallion. Amongst the mares, the glittering Brazilian-bred SAPPHIRE RB (Emerald J x Symphony RB by Sirajj UB) triumphed as Gold Champion, besting one of the deepest line-ups of mares ever to grace the international arena at Scottsdale,
with the luminous MARBELLA PCF (Exxalt x Verietta PCF by PCF Vision) sashed just behind as Silver Champion, and broody powerhouse GENEVA CS (SF Veraz x Gevalia CA by MS Mostly Padron) awarded Bronze. Another undeniably commanding Aria-bred stallion, ARIA VALIANT, was honoured as Silver Champion amongst the senior males, with VESPACIAN (Shanghai EA x Vesperra), a three-quarter brother to the illustrious Scottsdale Classic Reserve Champion Senior Mare EXXALTRESS and former Scottsdale Classic Champion Senior Stallion EXXALT, honoured as Bronze Champion. If one was paying close enough attention, there was another theme of excellence, in addition to the rapidly expanding influence
SHOWS AND EVENTS
of DOMINIC M, woven into the tapestry of success of the very best horses of all ages at Scottsdale, one that has resonated across many years and generations and in the programmes of a multitude of gifted and courageous breeders. The profoundly positive connective tissue that bound all of these horses together – EXXALTRESS, SERAPHIC K, MARBELLA PCF, GENEVA CS and CHLOE EL VERAZ T to name just a few – was SF VERAZ (Gazal Shaqab x Veronica GA by Versace), a now seventeen year old stallion that has been an understated sire of significance on five continents. The appearance of SF VERAZ through multiple sources in so many pedigrees of horses of growing significance has earned him highest honours as one of the most important
broodmare sires in breed worldwide, a gratifying reward for his breeders and succession of owners who have put their faith in this perennial patriarch. The success of the SF VERAZ descendants adds further credibility to the profound legacy of his iconic Aristocrat Dam VERONICA GA, unquestionably one of the most precious and prodigious daughters of breed pillar VERSACE (Fame VF x Precious As Gold by El Shaklan). In addition to SF VERAZ, VERONICA is also the dam of his three-quarter brother PCF VISION (by Marwan Al Shaqab), the invaluable Peacemaker Farms foundation stallion whose daughters have become indispensable matrons for so many ambitious breeding programmes all around the globe. In 2023

SHOWS AND EVENTS
alone, PCF VISION was an essential component in the pedigrees of title winners ALESIA ENB, MARBELLA PCF and SHANELLE PCF, all of which continues to make VERONICA GA one of the most enduringly influential matrons in the breed. The PCF breeder designation of Sam Peacemaker, long a universally respected mark of distinction, was a consistent link of quality in the pedigrees of a multitude of the Scottsdale 2023 achievers, especially apparent in the descendants of MARIA PCF (DA Valentino x MCA Afire Beylee by Afire Bey V). Like VERONICA GA, MARIA PCF was the common thread of excellence in a vast array of winners, including, most astoundingly, four high-profile champions: Scottsdale Classic Champion Senior Mare ALESIA ENB; Scottdale Classic Junior Champion BERGEN AN; Scottsdale Champion Senior Mare AAOTH NATALIA PCF (by Invictus PCF); and Scottsdale Signature Champion Yearling Colt ATH RD RHAVIER (Rhan Al Shahania x Giana Leah PCF by Polidoro FC). In addition to this triumphant quartet of champions, twelve other tail-female descendants of MARIA PCF also finished with Top Ten honours across the entire spectrum of halter competition, a breath-taking achievement for a mare just 15 years of age.

It has been immensely refreshing to witness a reinvigorated passion for breeding at Scottsdale, with breeders from both North and South America at the vanguard of both inspiration and energy. Without question, the depth of quality in the young horse classes is on the rise, with discerningly bred competitors hailing from a broader range of bloodlines now finding success and appreciation more consistently and convincingly. Camaraderie and collaboration amongst breeding programmes is also evidently on the ascent, all of which has made for a more celebratory atmosphere in the winner’s circle as well as during the farm visit excursions, an indispensable highlight of the Scottsdale experience. Emboldened by all of these positive changes, the future for the Arabian breeding horse feels not only safe and secure, but assuredly heading towards greater promise and possibility in the greatly anticipated generations that lie just ahead.

Costanza Laliscia and Fara in the Top 10 of AlUla Memorable performance by the Fuxiateam horse/rider combination in the prestigious The Custodian of the two Holy Mosques Fursan Cup 2023 in Saudi Arabia by Monia Rossi (Press Office) z photos by T.G.C. Eventi
Perugia (IT), 07 March 2023 – Costanza Laliscia, the 23-year-old rider from the Fuxiateam of Italia Endurance Stables & Academy, hits a new memorable milestone: on 4 March in AlUla, riding the Arabian mare Fara du Barthas, she took ninth place in The Custodian of the two Holy Mosques Fursan Cup 2023.

The most important endurance race on the world stage has seen the best riders in the world compete for total prize money of 15 million SAR - about 4 million euros - on a 120 km track that is extremely technical and demanding, immersed in the beautiful desert of AlUla, in Saudi Arabia, which gave all the participants breathtaking landscapes and scenery from sunrise to sunset.

du Barthas A masterful race for Costanza Laliscia who was the star, together with Fara du Barthas. Laliscia improved her position as the race went on, 70th on the first lap, 38th on the second lap, 18th after the third lap and 9th at the finish line, thus entering the Top 10 for the second consecutive year. Fara du Barthas, an 8-year-old gray purebred Arabian female, certainly did not disappoint, demonstrating her great reliability, confirming her growth path even more on the rise and finishing the race in perfect condition. The combination from the Agello of Magione stables conducted a tactically impeccable test crossing the finish line at an overall average of 16.773 km/h with a fourth lap at the formidable speed of 22.075 km/h which allowed them to score the highest hourly average in the last round of the whole competition. Sky-high satisfaction for the entire Fuxiateam of Italia Endurance Stables & Academy and the president
Simona Zucchetta bears witness to it: “We will definitely remember last weekend. Following Costanza and Fara du Barthas kilometer after kilometer was exciting and seeing the great daily work transformed into such an exhilarating performance fills me with joy and pride. My greatest congratulations to the whole team for taking Fuxiateam high in the world once again”. q

WE, WOMEN by Giorgia Mauri
I stumbled upon this sentence days ago and can’t get it out of my head. “If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same”. It is taken from Kipling’s poem If and welcomes the world’s greatest tennis players as they enter Centre Court at Wimbledon. I think it means that often things are not as they seem, that every event even the most extraordinary brings with it a new world full of possibilities and choices to be made. That one should never believe (only) the facade and exhort one to remain whole and true to oneself.

I am Marion Richmond, born in Australia and descended from an English convict, through my mother: my father was a refugee from Germany. Most of my working life was spent in our family electrical engineering business. It was a maledominated industry at the time, and I faced significant difficulties based simply because I was a woman. This is a stark contrast to the Arabian horse industry at the time, where one had women like Judi Forbis, Sheila Varian, Sigi Merz (Siller), and now her daughter, Janina, Becky Rogers and Lisa McCracken. Horsewomen were valued based on their knowledge and ability, not their gender. I am now retired with three adult children, seven grandchildren and a husband, so I am able to spend much time with my lifelong passion of Arabian horse. As a child I was in hospital for long periods of time, and was brought books to read: only horse stories, of course. My favourite was the story of the Godolphin Arabian, so from five years of age I had in my mind a picture of a white Arabian mare. That has not changed until now. At the age of 10 years, I purchased my first horse, with my own pocket money, a very old partbred mare who came with a saddle (with no stuffing) and a bridle tied up with string. I gave pony rides and sold guinea pigs by the roadside to buy oats, at 10&6 per bag. My parents had just purchased 22 acres at Dural, New South Wales, as they bred dogs, and had 70 in the city! Simeon Stud now has 72 acres, as every time, I had a big sale I either purchased adjoining land or horses with new bloodlines. I approached the world of the Arabian horse through the Arabian horse. I am always looking to breed “the perfect horse”, so I am looking at photos, videos, some Facebook posts, for horses that will fit my ideal to incorporate into my programme. Before 2019 I travelled as much as I could, to go to as many farms with straight Egyptian horses as possible. I also enjoyed judging at shows to
learn about other programmes. I very much enjoy being a woman in the Arabian horse industry. In Australia I welcome all and sundry to my farm, and try to spend time to impart to young and old, and new people into the industry, what I have learned over the years. In Australia, this industry has no gender bias. The only time I have had a slight hiccup has been in some parts of the Middle East, where women are not as respected as they should be. Tenacity and perseverance are the two qualities that one needs to fulfill your dreams. Never give up in searching for perfection. Despite other people’s voices, you always must keep the image of the horse in front of your mind. Sometimes, miracles can happen! Sometimes, one has to sell a wonderful horse to bring in new bloodlines: life is also a compromise. Frozen semen, if it is good quality, is another way to bring new blood. Experience is always valuable. Recently, at a show in Australia with five judges (one from the USA, two from the Middle East and two Australian), we showed three straight Egyptian females. One was a yearling, and top score of the show, a mare, second highest overall score of the show, and an 18 year old broodmare who went top fourth overall (all bloodlines, all genders, all ages). One of the Australian judges had complained beforehand, about having to also judge a straight Egyptian class. After the classes, I am told they apologised to the committee, as they had just loved the horses. So many breeders of Arabian horses, who had never seen straight Egyptians competing, were overwhelmed and most of them were young women starting out with a just a few horses. I think the fact that I am a woman of 76 years, and people can see I am still breeding wonderful horses is an inspiration for other women to follow their dreams.

My name is Alexandra Lebedeva, I am 24 years old. I live in Italy but I was born in Moldova. Since I was five years old I have a great passion for horses, I started with show jumping horses and then I fell in love with reining, I did endurance and finally I found my love and started working with an Arabian horse, EK Dehor. With him we started competing in a western pleasure class and I started training horses for shows, learning how to take care of these amazing horses. My history with Arabian horses started four years ago when I was asked to go and work in an Endurance stable
in Dubai, after this experience I had the great opportunity to work in a stable where they train Arabians for shows. I think these kinds of horses need more attention, patience, a lot of sensitivity, and I think they need to trust the person they are working with. Maybe sometimes men think they can do everything better than a woman, it would be nice if men would push and encourage more women to do this work, to present, to show ... for me the key to get ahead in any situation is to have a goal and work hard to get it! This world needs more women!

I’m Costanza Laliscia and I’m 23 years old. I live in Umbria, in the province of Perugia, and I carry out my business in Agello of Magione in the Umbrian countryside, where my family’s Italia Endurance Stables & Academy is located. I am first and foremost an athlete in the endurance discipline, but I also take care of the general management of our stables and also of training. In fact, Italia Endurance also has an Academy that deals with the training of talented young athletes, the champions of tomorrow. I am very passionate about teaching because it allows me to transfer to others not only what I have learned from a technical point of view, but also those values and emotions that this sport has been able to give me. With the aim of continuing my professional career also in the field of training, I graduated in Motor Sciences at the University of Perugia. I approached the world of horses, and in particular the Arabian thoroughbred horse, thanks to my family and above all thanks to my father Gianluca, who has always had a great passion for horses. Since I was a very small child
he brought me in close contact with this beautiful animal which I then fell in love with. Being a woman for me has never been an obstacle in this world. In fact, I think that equestrian sports are among the very few sports where women and men can compete on the same level and without distinction. Given that horses are always part of my life projects, the male physique is often associated with resistance to fatigue, but above all in the discipline of endurance, what counts together with physical performance is concentration combined with a marked sensitivity, a exquisitely feminine that allows you to communicate more easily with the animal. I believe that sensitivity is one of the characteristics that most distinguishes me: being able to interpret the horse, a living being that does not speak but that transmits emotions that we must be able to catch and interpret. This empathy is essential to get in touch with horses and to achieve important results with them.

Who you are, where you come from and what you do?
How did you approach the world of the Arabian horse?
Simona: Good morning everyone! We are Marzia, Mirjam, Simona and Valentina, we all live in the province of Parma, an area that is a bit magical for us because it is rich in excellence and opportunities. In fact, important industries are born here: first and foremost the food industry (prosciutto and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese need no introduction), then we have car manufacturers (see Dallara automobili), a cuttingedge investigation department that is RIS, and even as far as art is concerned, Giuseppe Verdi and Parmigianino immediately come to mind. We work in the ANICA secretariat, which is of national importance for the Purebred Arabian Horse Stud Book. Italian breeding, in fact has reached high levels for racing, endurance and shows. We take care of registration: births, transfers of ownership, imports, etc...
Simona: It all happened by chance, I was looking for a job and after an interview and a trial period I was hired. I was immediately intrigued by the focus and importance of genealogies ascertained by DNA testing. After the first few years, though, in seeing the various psa-related events, I really wanted to ride! So I attended a riding school for a while. Then the decrease in free time at that time and the resulting leg ache from not doing regular activities made me give up the sport. However, I have some basic knowledge left, and when there is an opportunity for a horseback ride on vacation, I don’t miss it!
Mirjam: I was born in Switzerland (my mother was Swiss) and when I was two we moved to a very small village in the hills of Parma where I still live with my family and my animals. Passionate about horses from a very young age. Since last year I no longer have horses but I have many bees hives and several dogs (German Kurzhaar) with whom I spend my free time in truffle hunting and various competitions. Time is never enough to do everything. Valentina: I was born in Parma back in 1979 and still live in my birthplace. I love the place where I live, far from the city, surrounded by greenery and (almost) the silence of the countryside. I love animals very much, despite that I have always had only and exclusively dogs. At a very young age I did a little bit of horseback riding together with some elementary school friends without alas great success. For the past few years instead, besides following my son involved in rugby, I have been dabbling in longdistance triathlons together with my husband; the effort I put into doing this sport reminds me so much of the effort put in by all those we take care of in the Secretariat, who, riding their very strong Arabian horses, complete grueling races in mountain running and more. Not incidentally, both of these disciplines are defined as endurance.
Mirjam: I finished high school and I started working almost immediately for ANICA. It was 1986 and ANICA had just moved to Parma to the offices of Ing. Giovanni Ficai, whom I still thank for passing on his passion for the Arabian horse. There were no computers there was nothing, just a small room with a few papers and an agenda with a list of horses and their owners. An old typewriter with which I used to compile and write pedigrees side by side with photocopies of the parents’ pedigrees, and then there were the magnificent old WAHO stud books that the Engineer, as we all called him, had taught me to read to complete the horses’ data. Valentina: I came to Anica quite casually, initially as an archivist; the documentation that we receive daily for all equines registered in the Arabian Horse Stud Book has to be catalogued in order to be reused over and over again depending on the needs of each horse and its progeny. I admit that I knew early on that I would love this place, which did not show itself as just paperwork. Marzia: Since 1990 I have been a part of what I consider to be a family: the A.N.I.C.A. Being an accountancy graduate, I was immediately involved in the accounting department and all related activities. The activity that was assigned to me and that I have continued to follow until today, is very gratifying to me because it is in line with my educational and professional profile. This is also thanks to the serene

environment that has welcomed me and always marked by maximum cooperation. What does it mean today to be a woman like you in the Arabian horse world? Simona: We are fortunate because we not only have the classic office work but also do some traveling (such as for membership meetings, National competition secretariat, etc.). We like to go on away trips because it gives us a chance to meet breeders in person. Have you found any difficulties or obstacles in proposing yourself in this world? Nowadays life has definitely become more complex, impending deadlines and bureaucracy always keep everyone running. What qualities or characteristics do you think you must have in order to pursue your dream or to undertake a project you care about? Mirjam: When you do something with passion, obstacles become a stimulus to do better, in work you need precision, attention respect for those who work with you and certainly stimulus to do better and better. Valentina: With time you learn to take measures with everything around you, I consider Anica and my colleagues Mirjam, Marzia and Simona a second family, with whom I can face joys and sorrows. We work as a team, supporting and confronting each other on any difficulty in order to be able to solve each situation in the best possible way. The causticity of this work faced in

4 has a whole other flavor, so I believe that being able to share and help others are necessary qualities. Do you think that your experience and history can be an inspiration for a future generation of women in this world? Mirjam: Maybe, I don’t know. It depends on what goals you have. Here you don’t have any career possibilities. Valentina: I cannot give an answer to this question. I can definitely say for sure that the experience of the colleagues before me and their stories of life lived in the Anica world are a help for me and my daily work, maybe the same will happen with those who will come after me, maybe. Marzia: I think I am not able to give a precise answer, I say, on my life and work experience, that commitment and honesty in work and life definitely brings you great satisfaction. Leave a message to future generations of young women to encourage them to take their own path, whatever it may be. Simona: I have a dream! (M L King) Dear girls, remember that anything is possible as long as you believe in your dream. Stay united and friends, because being able to work in a pleasant environment is truly a blessing. For future generations, in my humble opinion, I think the starting point is to take care of the study as much as possible, then with the right commitment comes everything else.
