France THE CITY OF PARIS WHICH IS ALSO THE CAPITAL OF FRANCE SURROUNDS A GREAT PORTION OF THE SEINE RIVER WHICH BECAME VERY IMPORTANT TO THE GROWTH OF WHAT HAS NOW BECOME A UNIFIED MEGATROPOLIS.

Île de la Cité THE DEVELOPMENT OF PARIS BEGINS WITH DESIGN FORCES THAT WERE INTRODUCED BY ROMANS AND HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED UNTIL PRESENT DAY. THE MAP SHOWS THE INTERSECTION OF TWO DISTINCT SYSTEMS WHICH IS KNOWN AS THE ÎLE DE LA CITÉ. HERE, THE ROMANS BUILT AN NEW CITY AS A BASE FOR THIER SOLDIERS. JULIUS CAESAR AND HIS ROMAN ARMY SETTLED IN PROTECTING THE TERRITORY FROM GERMAN INVADERS.

the IMPORTANCE OF THE RIVER FOR CENTURIES FOLLOWING UP TO THE RENAISSANCE PERIOD, POETS, PAINTERS AND ARCHITECTS HAVE UNDERSTOOD THE POWERFUL ATTRACTION OF A CITY THAT FINDS ITS OWN REFLECTION. PARIS HAS FOLLOWED UP WITH THE RENAISSANCE PERIOD TO MAINTAIN THAT TRADITION. THE CITY WAS BUILT RIGHT NEXT TO THE SEINE RIVER. THE RIVER BROUGHT IN COMMERCE TO THE START OF PARIS NONETHELESS HELPING THE GROWTH OF ITS CITY.

Development of Paris

EXPANSION of PARIS THE FIRST WALLS OF PARIS WERE BUILT NORTH OF THE RIVER. THEY LATER WE MOVED OUTWARD BY PHILIPPE AUGUSTUS IN 1223. AS THE CITY GREW, THE WALLS HAD TO EXTEND FURTHER TO ACCOMADATE THE GROWTH OF THE CITY. THE WALLS WERE EXTENDED UNDER CHARLES V AND CHARLES VI. THE FOLLOWING TWO CENTURIES THE DEVELOPMENT OF PARIS CONTINUED TO GROW FURTHER OUTWARD AND THE WALLS ONCE AGAIN ENTENDED UNDER LOUIS XIII. THE FINAL WALLS THAT WERE BUILT TO SURROUND PARIS WERE KNOWN AS THE MUR DES FERMIERS GÉNÉRAUX MEANING THE WALL OF THE FARMERS GENERAL.

Medieval Paris 12th - 15th Century

GROWING OUTWARD PARIS BEGAN TO GROW AS A TIGHTLY DEVELOPED TOWN, CENTERED ALONG THE SEINE RIVER. IT WAS ENCLOSED BY ITS OWN CITY WALLS ENABLING THE CITY TO BE PROTECTED AND UNIFIED. PARIS THEN BECAME THE POLITICAL, ECONOMICAL, RELIGIOUS AND CULTURAL CAPITAL OF FRANCE. DURING THIS TIME, PARIS WENT THROUGH SOME ONGOING CHANGES THAT RESULTED ON THE GROWTH OF ITS CITY. SOME CHANGES WERE UNDER, KING LOUIS VI AND VII KING PHILLIPPE AUGUSTUS KING LOUIS IX KING LOUIS IV

King and Queen

SOCIAL and POLITICAL UPHEAVAL THE CITY LATER BEGINS TO GROW AS A MONARCHY, RULED BY KING LOUIS XVI. DURING THIS TIME FRANCE WAS GREATLY IN DEBT AND THEIR KING FOLLOWED BY HIS QUEEN MARIE ANTOINETTE WERE NOT SUITABLE TO TAKE ON THE RESPONSIBILITY OF FINANCIAL CRISIS OF FRANCE.

EXECUTION of ROYALTY KING LOUIS XVI ATTEMPTS TO SOLVE THE FINANCIAL CRISIS OF FRANCE BY ASSEMBLING THE STATES-GENERAL. - THE CLERGY (1ST ESTATE) - THE NOBLES (2ND ESTATE) - THE COMMON (3R ESTATE) THE ASSEMBLY RESULTS IN DIISAGREEMENTS BETWEEN THE ESTATES AND THE KING AND SO THE START OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION BEGINS ENDING IN THE EXECUTION OF THIER KING AND QUEEN.

UNIFIYING PARIS DURING THE START OF THE 1800’S, NAPOLEON BONAPARTE (NAPOLEON I) STARTED TO REESTABLISH ORDER AND BRING CALM TO THE PEOPLE OF PARIS. HE MADE PEACE WITH THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. BY 1804 HE TRIED TO MAKE PARIS INTO AN IMPERIAL CAPITAL SIMILAR TO ANCIENT ROME. HE ALSO TOOK IT UPON HIMSELF TO BRING FRESH WATER TO THE CITY BY IMPROVING THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF THE CITY. BY 1814, NAPOLEON WAS DEFEATED BY THE RUSSIANS. PARIS WAS THEN CONQUERED AFTER NOT BEING UNDER FOREIGN POWER FOR OVER 400 YEARS. THE PONT DES ARTS - 1802 FIRST IRON BRIDGE IN PARIS

the NEW MONARCHY BY THE MID 1800’S, THE POPULATION OF PARIS INCREASED FROM 785,000 TO 1,053,000 IN NEARLY TWO DECADES. SEWERS WERE EMPTIED INTO THE SEINE WHICH CAUSE A CHOLERA OUTBREAK KILLING OVER 20 THOUSAND PEOPLE. UNFORTUNATELY, PARIS WAS NOT IMPROVING UNDER THE NEW RULE OF KING LOUIS-PHILLIPPE. HOWEVER, HE TRIED TO MAKE EFFORTS ON IMPROVING THE CENTER OF THE CITY BY BUILDING NEW STREETS, PLANTING TREES ALONG THE RIVER, COMPLETING THE PLACE DE LA CONCORDE AND BUILDING THE FIRST RAILROAD STATIONS IN PARIS. the Paris of Napoleon III

HAUSSMANNS RENOVATION of PARIS DURING THE TIME OF NAPOLEON III, PARIS’ POPULATION GREW FORM 1 MILLION TO 2 MILLION. HE FOCUSED ON BRINGING IN MORE WATER, AIR AND LIGHT INTO THE CITY MAKING IT THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITY IN EUROPE. HE ALSO FOCUSED ON THE CITY PLANNING ASPECT ALONG WITH THE HELP OF GEORGEEUGÉNE HAUSSMANN, WHO WAS IN CHARGE OF CARRYING OUT A MASSIVE PROGRAM TO CREATE NEW BOULEVARDS, PARKS AND PUBLIC SPACES; TO TRY AND UNIFORM PARIS. MORE GREEN SPACES HOSPITALS GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS NARROW STREETS 4 TO 5 STOREY BUILDINGS


the First World War DURING THE TIME OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR, FRANCE HAD EXPERIENCED A GREAT DEPRESSION PERIOD. FOOD AND SUPPLIES WERE CUT TO A MINIMUM. GERMANY HAD ALSO TRIED TO INVADE FRANCE MORE THAN ONCE, BUT WITH THE HELP OF THE AMERICAN AND BRITISH ALLIES, GERMANY DID NOT SUCCEED. MILLIONS MARCHED THE STREETS OF CHAMPS ÉLYSÉES IN 1919 IN VICTORY.
