HISTORY
THE HOUSE RUTH BUILT
BABE
BUILT IN 1923 THIS WAS THE ORIGINAL HOME OF THE NEW YORK YANKEES. IT RAN FROM 1923-2008 WHEN IT WAS DEMOLISHED TO FOR THE NEW STADIUM WHICH IS OPEN TODAY. THE NAME “THE HOUSE THAT BABE RUTH BULT” WAS DERIVED FROM THE LEGENDARY BASEBALL PLAYER WHOSE LEGACY STARTED IN THE STADIUM.
ISTORY
THE NEW YORK GIANTS
FROM 1956-1974 IT WAS THE HOME OF THE FAMOUS NEW YORK GIANTS
CONSTRUCTION
THE BIRTH OF BASEBALLS HOLY CATHEDRAL
THE TEAM OWNERS SETTLED ON A LUMBERYARD SITE IN THE BRONX FOR THEIR STADIUM LOCATION AFTER LOOKING INTO OTHER OPTIONS IN LONG ISLAND QUEENS AND MANHATTAN. THEY WERE RIDICULED FOR CHOOSING TO MAKE A STADIUM TO HOLD 60,000 PEOPLE BECAUSE AT THE TIME BASEBALL GAMES WERE PLAYED IN FACILITIES THAT ONLY HELD 30,000 CONSTRUCTION STARTED ON MAY 5, 1922 AND WAS COMPLETED LESS THAN A YEAR LATER. THE STADIUM WALLS WERE DESIGNED BY THOMAS EDISON TO BE AN EXTREMELY STRONG AND DURABLE CONCRETE, 20,000 CUBIC YARDS WERE USED IN THE ORIGINAL STRUCTURE. -TOTAL CONSTRCTION COST 2.5 MILLION
RE-RENOVATION
ENOVATIONS
A DETERIORATED NEIGHBORHOOD 1974-75
BY 1974 THE STADIUM WAS IN BAD CONDITION AS WELL AS THE NEIGHBORHOOD WHERE IT STOOD. CBS OWNED THE YANKEES AT THE TIME PROPOSED RENOVATIONS OF THE STADIUM WHICH MEANT THE YANKEES WOULD HAVE TO PLAY TWO YEARS IN THE NEIGHBORING SHEA STADIUM (QUEENS NEW YORK METS) THE YORK METS DENIED THE YANKEES THE USE OF THEIR STADIUM. WHICH DELAYED RENOVATIONS FROM 1971-74. IN 1972 MAYOR JOHN LANDSEY STEPPED IN AND PURCHASED THE STADIUM FOR THE CITY AT $24 MILLION ($135 MILLION TODAY) AND LEASING IT BACK TO THE YANKEES. BECAUSE THE CITY ALREADY OWNED SHEA STADIUM THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO FORBID THE YANKEES FROM USING THEIR FACILITIES
POST RENOVATION
CHANGES AFTER RENOVATION
AFTER THE STADIUM WAS RENOVATED MANY BELIEVED THAT THE NEW CHANGES MADE IT LOOK LIKE A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT STRUCTURE THAN IT WAS ORIGINALLY. THE ORIGINAL WOODEN SEATS WERE REPLACED WITH PLASTIC SEATS. THE UPPER DECK WAS EXPANDED 9 ROWS. BLEACHER SEATS WERE REDUCED AND NEW WALLS WERE ADDED TO BLOCK THE VIEWS FROM THE ELEVATED 4 LINE TRAIN STATION.
FTERMATH
A SIGN OF HOPE BECAUSE OF THE AGE OF THE STADIUM AND THE HIGH DEMAND OF FANS THE YANKEES DECIDED TO BUILD A NEW STADIUM THAT WOULD BE LARGER THAN THE ORIGINAL. IN THE BEGINNING THE CITY DID NOT AGREE BECAUSE OF THE PARK LAND THAT WOULD BE LOST. THEY LATER DECIDED TO DEMOLISH THE OLD AND GIVE BACK THE GREEN AREAS THAT WERE BEING TAKEN AWAY FROM THE NEIGHBORHOOD. THE CITY BELIEVED THAT A NEW STADIUM WOULD IMPROVE THE SOUTH BRONX AREA MAKING IT FRIENDLIER TO TOURISTS.
EMOLITION
THE END OF AN ERA CONSTRUCTION ON THE STADIUM BEGUN IN AUGUST 2006. THE FINAL TWO SEASONS WERE PLAYED IN 2007 AND 2008 WHILE THE NEW STRUCTURE WAS GOING UP. HISTORY AND TOURS OF THE STADIUM WAS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FROM SEPTEMBER 21, 2008 UNTIL NOVEMBER 12, 2008. THE LAST OFFICES CLOSED BY JANUARY 2009 AND DEMOLITION BEGAN IN MARCH 2009 AND COMPLETED IN 2010. A NEW PARK COMPLEX STANDS IN ITS PLACE HERITAGE FIELD.
