BRAND PROFILE
UNCONVENTIONAL SHAPES A-line is a women clothing brand - that started with only shirts and blouses, which is still its main focus – challenging conventions to create the perfect fit for the 21st century woman. Simplicity meets sophistication – the synergy results in unlikely shapes that compliment the female body. The brand’s designs are a reflection of what the A-line woman stands for – elegance, maturity and confidence. Designing the perfect styles and sharing them with women everywhere was Alexandra Carneiro’s drive. Thorough and passionate about detail, the creative director at A-line has synced her sense of taste and her 20 years’ experience in the textile industry to reinvent the essentials in a woman’s wardrobe. A-line curates natural and delicate materials such as cotton and silk to design easy care, functional, high quality pieces. From one woman to another. All day, every day.
WHO I AM
ALEXANDRA CARNEIRO Her mother being a dressmaker, Alexandra Carneiro grew up around thread, sewing patterns and fabrics. This also meant that high quality standards and attention to detail were the norm for her, and when playing as a child, she would already turn the hems for flawless, perfect seams on the pieces she dressed up her dolls in. Those days, garments were tailored and intended to endure time. Her personality would translate into the unique pieces she wore, and Alexandra has always stood out for her impeccable taste and sophistication, characteristics that have also defined her path and her career in the creative areas. When she was only 18 she began working at a textile company, her first learning experience in the industry. It didn’t take long before she set up her first business, and, little by little, she built a loyal client portfolio across Europe. In 2015, a lifelong dream came true – she set up her own atelier, where she still develops garments for international private labels. Benefiting from a career of over 20 years in the textile industry, she has come to realise that there is a segment of women unsuccessfully looking for elegant, comfortable pieces that are adaptable and suitable for any time of the day who end up settling for options that are not really what they had in mind in the first place. Being a wife, mother, business owner/manager and creative director, Alexandra Carneiro has a real insight into women’s needs, which is why, in 2016, she embraced the challenge of reinventing the shirt – a staple in a woman’s closet –, an approach with unconventional shapes and details at its core.

Viemos conhecer a A-Line, uma marca portuguesa de camisaria feminina, que desafia o convencionalismo para criar o fi ing perfeito para a mulher do século XXI. O compromisso? A forte aliança entre simplicidade e sofisticação, apresentando formas improváveis numa ode ao corpo feminino. As peças, essas, reflectem bem o conceito de elegância, maturidade e confiança.

Who is Alexandra? It’s a bit difficult to describe myself, but I’d say that I am a simple, genuine, a fighter and a determined person. What inspires you? People in general, but women in particular. And, as a woman myself, I feel that I can do something for the female sex in general. I like diversity of style and we have this ability to express ourselves in a variety of ways… How would you describe your style and what way does this influence your brand? I am a simple and discreet person, but I like to feel different, through my attitude. Comfort, quality and the wearability of the pieces always come first. That’s the way I conceive A-Line pieces, because all of us deserve better. If you had to choose three inspirational women, who would they be? Catarina Furtado, on the national stage; Alexa Chung, on an international level and Audrey Hepburn on a timeless level. What can we look forward to with this project, in the future and how do you see it ten years from now? To create a brand means a long path ahead, but with persistence and a lot of work on research and creation, surrounded by the right people, I feel confident that everything will be successful. I enjoy challenges and, because of this, I naturally see myself broadening the range of products and not just limiting myself to women’s blouses… The sky is the limit!

Quem é a Alexandra? É um pouco difícil descrever-me, mas diria que sou uma mulher simples, genuína, lutadora e determinada. O que a inspira? As pessoas em geral, mas especialmente a mulher. E, enquanto mulher, sinto que posso fazer algo pelo sexo feminino em geral. Gosto da diversidade de estilos, e nós temos essa capacidade de nos expressarmos de múltiplas formas... Como descreveria o seu estilo e de que forma o imprime na marca? Sou uma pessoa simples e discreta, mas gosto de marcar pela diferença, com atitude. O conforto, a qualidade e a vestibilidade das peças estão sempre em primeiro lugar. É desta forma que penso as peças A-Line, porque todas nós merecemos o melhor. Se tivesse que escolher três mulheres de referência, quais seriam? Catarina Furtado, no panorama nacional; Alexa Chung, no plano internacional; e Audrey Hepburn, a nível de intemporalidade. O que podemos esperar deste projecto, no futuro, e onde o vê daqui a 10 anos? Criar uma marca significa ter um longo caminho a percorrer, mas com persistência e muito trabalho de pesquisa e criação, rodeada das pessoas certas, tenho a certeza que o projecto tem tudo para dar certo. Gosto de desafios e, por isso, vejo-me naturalmente a alargar o leque de produtos, não me limitando apenas à camisa feminina... “The sky is the limit“!

We’re at a studio, just a few kilometres from Oporto, a kind of laboratory, where all the action takes place, where light floods in through the windows, lighting up and injecting life into each raw material and the pieces laid out around the space. We have come to discover A-Line, a Portuguese brand for women’s blouses which defies convention in its quest for the perfect fit for the 21st Century woman. And the brand’s commitment is? A strong alliance between simplicity and sophistication, presenting unexpected shapes in an ode to the female figure. The pieces reflect the concept of elegance, maturity and confidence.

Inspired by those women who seek comfort and distinction throughout the day and on any occasion, A-Line begins with the gathering of natural and delicate materials, such as co on and silk, to then create easycare, functional pieces of the highest quality. Available in a range of neutral and basic colours, and in pastel colours, the brand’s creations take one aback with the way they feel when worn, by their so ness and commitment to detail. To create the perfect blouse and to share it with all women was, in fact, what inspired Alexandra Carneiro – mentor and creative director of this project. Meticulous by nature and passionate about detail, she combines sensitivity, good taste and twenty years of experience in textile production, in her quest to reinvent the essentials of the female wardrobe. During our visit, our gaze wanders over the various inspirational moodboards, and then returns to rest on the true ‘works of art’ produced by A-Line. And because the conversation is flowing so naturally, in this welcoming environment where we feel at home, we couldn’t leave without some words from Alexandra, in the first person, from woman to woman.
In this edition we went to a private garden to give life to a choice of products different from the usual, from jewels to sustainable garments. The contact with nature gave the motto so that the production was framed in our Green cover theme.

Inspirada na mulher que procura conforto e distinção ao longo de todo o dia e em qualquer ocasião, a A-Line parte da curadoria de materiais naturais e delicados, como o algodão e a seda, para construir peças easy care, funcionais e de elevada qualidade. Disponíveis numa paleta de tons neutros e basilares, e em cores pastel, as criações da marca surpreendem pela forma como vestem, pela suavidade e pela dedicação ao pormenor. Criar a camisa perfeita e partilhá-la com todas as mulheres foi, aliás, a motivação de Alexandra Carneiro – mentora e directora criativa do projecto. Meticulosa por natureza e apaixonada pelo detalhe, alia sensibilidade, bom gosto e vinte anos de experiência na produção têxtil, para reinventar os essenciais do guarda-roupa feminino. Durante a visita, o nosso olhar vai-se perdendo pelos vários moodboards de inspiração, para depois se encontrar e repousar nas verdadeiras “peças de arte” da A-Line. E porque a conversa vai fluindo, num ambiente acolhedor que nos faz sentir como que em casa, não conseguimos partir sem umas palavras de Alexandra em discurso directo, de mulher para mulher.

Nesta edição rumámos a um jardim particular para dar vida a uma escolha de produtos diferentes dos usuais, desde jóias a peças de roupa sustentáveis. O contacto com a natureza deu o mote para que a produção fosse enquadrada no nosso tema Green.
