"Its a hobby, a very popular hobby in Egypt... the greatest pleasure is to see them fly... It's not about making money... they are a national treasure..." from interview by eNCA with a 65 year 0ld Egyptian pigeon breeder.
"When I'm very depressed I come up here, I keep busy with the pegions, feeding them, lying them and even talking to them. This is how I forget my problems..." from interview by DNE with an Egyptian pigeon breeder in his forties.

Aly Elsayed Portfolio 2015
Pigeon breeding is claimed to be an ancient tradition in Egypt, since the times of the ancient Egyptian 7000 years ago. This famous hobby is an obsession for many Egyptians breeders; one could see that in the many wooden towers situated on top of Cairo's buildings. The towers are built high so they can provide a healthy environment for the pigeons away from the pollution of the congested city. As a passion, breeders raise a vast variety of pigeons types from all around the globe and build their wooden high towers is different designs and decorations. One could claim that a pigeon tower is a dominant element in most of the city's buildings roofs. Thus, they provide an excellent inspiration and starting point for the new hotel network in both building form and structure. The structures allow for a variety of functions in the small spaces and are light weighted which best suits the city's buildings. Not to mention that local pigeons are one the main dishes in Egyptian cousin, which provides good material for the restaurant facilities.

'Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design' Masters Program
Chp.I: Unfolding the Bunkers The task of the research is to look for the unknown stories and explore the un-used metro zones of an urban area "Bad Cannstatt" located in Stuttgart, an area known for its diversity and the presence of multi-cultural minorities; Turkish Muslims among others. The search for the "unknown story" provoked the team to look into the area's darkest chapters of history and beneath what first appears to one's eyes to reveal what’s hidden from its daily user and by passers. The research took three months of condense work as the multi-cultural research team consists of four members; one Egyptian (the author), one Jordanian and two Germans. by the end of the research phase, a booklet is produced which exhibits the team's work. Locations of different bunkers within Stuttgart
Background In the course of the first and second world wars, a number of defensive structures were developed by the republic of Germany, some of which were later rehabilitated during the cold war. In 2007, these structures were officially decommissioned by the German government where only very few were to be maintained and opened for visitation. In the case of Stuttgart, the city faces the challenge to what to do with these structures as they are expensive and un beneficial to deconstruct. The general aim of the research is to revive the bunkers and adapt them to the community's spatial and cultural needs to develop a narrative of an experimental network of bunkers where they are perceived as a part of the city's urban environment. While preserving the special values behind such spaces, New activities would offer opportunities for meeting and income generation for the surrounding communities based on participatory approach for establishing the feeling of “local ownership". This encouraged the initiation of a complete urban diagnosis with various stakeholders inspired by the "Bad Cannstatt" area's diverse community and high concentration of bunker

Bunkers Network The Unknown Story of Bad Cannstatt Chp.II: Reading the Community An urban diagnosis is held for the surrounding community in order to detect the comprehensive needs of its different groups and parties. Several tools are used for the urban diagnosis that includes interviews, testimonies, surveys, physical mapping and focus groups. These tools enabled the investigation of the contextual problems that included cultural conflicts, lack of services and marginalization. The assessment of community needs and physical potentials of bunkers led consequently to the formation of the vision of the bunkers network. By the end of this chapter, the research team reaches two scenarios in order to achieve development of the network with various Collage of the selected bunkers and surrounding problems partners and users.

Bunkers Network The Unknown Story of Bad Cannstatt Chp.III: Developing the Bunker Network Formerly used to shelter large groups of people from air raids, Bunkers could be now reused to gather people again thus unfolding the bunker. The abandoned spaces could be awakened, and filled with multiple and experimental functions. Direct surrounded communities are integrated and invited to implement their ideas and benefit from the offered and reworked space. A network of bunkers is to be developed incrementally over the whole city. The outer shells and the inner spaces of the different bunkers offer a variety of possibilities for diverse functions through a toolbox of interventions developed by the research team. A special language of signage and logos is also developed by the team to connect the different bunkers within the city. According to the stakeholders and potential users for each bunker, a vision that includes adequate functions and interventions is visualized.

SAC werk 8 Spatial Art Conversation WERK 8, a recently opened artistic hub in a former factory in the ever-changing industrial area of Feuerbach in Stuttgart, Germany. Surrounded by migration minorities, it is a site of negotiation over identity. Western Europe‘s continued dependence on millions of migrant workers especially during the worst economic crisis since the Second World War shows that the economic system can no longer exist without their labor. The aim is to highlight the importance of migrant workers in a contemporary society. The vision is to create a place that opens up the experience of migration for the German society to know and experience more about. start a conversation with the social and physical surrounding of Werk 8 socially using Dialogical art or community-based art and physically through opening up the envelope of Werk 8 inside out. Several social and physical tools are developed by the research team; beginning with participatory art project. The first project was a street gallery initiated by the research team in co-operation with INSIDE OUT project. The project includes the collecting of 56 portraits for people of migration backgrounds, reminding us that behind the numbers are real human stories. All hanged on the outside wall of Werk8 on the 25th of July 2014, catching the attention of people who are not typical museum or galleries visitors.

"Istabl Antar" - Cairo, Egypt The research project is part of ICS (Integrated Case Study) module which is a part of the third semester of the IUSD (Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design) Masters program taking place in Cairo. The course aims to guide its students through a ‘hands on’ experience regarding one of the biggest challenges facing Cairo as a megacity in particular. The research team is composed of six members of different nationalities and cultural backgrounds. The primary analysis was done on Istable Antar which is an informal area situated in Cairo, Egypt. Phase I included the understanding of the actors within the area; while Phase II provided a specific analysis for the socioeconomic, infrastructure, land and building issues of the area. This had resulted in a closer understanding of the needs and problems that have to be tackled in the area. In Phase III Nine interventions, covering the previously identified needs, were suggested. One of which is rooting a Local Cooperative Body (LCB). LCB is a body that works on residents’ representation, empowerment, and enablement for self urban management. Results are based on various brain storming sessions within the group about the suggested project. At the same time, a Log Frame was developed by the team members to structure and detail the idea of the LCB. The idea was presented to local public during a festival held by the IUSD program in the area where the team discussed the formation of LCB in a round table with members from the local community. The team had to provide some visual informative material to facilitate the presentation of the idea. A catalogue and a comic book were produced which include information on the importance and details on the LCB formation, steps were shown using pictograms and staked together in one comic book.
