STRATA | Mars Habitat Graduate Work UCLA | 2017

This project rethinks all facets of architectural design, from material to fabrication by applying an additive manufacturing process to remotely fabricate an entire enclosure protecting equipment and human inhabitants of the first Mars dwelling. The design focuses on creating a layered habitat with an imperative to give its inhabitants visual connection to the landscape beyond the habitat. Vertical gardens within the habitat provide a break in the monotony of Mars’s desert landscape, while contributing to food and oxygen production. The structure , aside from providing living and lab spaces for the astronauts, includes a factory/experiment unit which focuses on terraforming and other procedures which could contribute to altering the Mars biosphere for future human habitation.

Strata proposes the additive manufacturing fabrication method of material extrusion. The design is centred on layering at its various levels - from space distribution and shell structures to the fabrication via layered extrusion of silica and regolith, locally available on Mars. As part of the project proposal, a mock up was fabricated in order to defend the proposed fabrication strategy. Using clay extruded through a syringe cartridge hooked up to an air pump and KUKA robot, we fabricated a column which mimicked the formal language of Strata’s Mars habitat. (We began by fabricating a plastic extrusion tool in order to visually depict the material quality of silica and regolith in terms of transparency, but due to time constraints, the project was completed using clay extrusion.)

WAX AGGREGATION Technology Seminar Graduate Work UCLA | 2017

Wax Assembly represents a conversation between robotic precision, human craft, and entropic material behavior. The objective was to develop an end effector for the Agilus KUKA robot that could be controlled in real time by users during the fabrication process. Using wax and working with its rapid material phase change properties, the KUKA arm attempts to fabricate a column through the process of cumulative aggregation and multidirectional massing. Midway during the KUKA controlled dipping action, the process is intercepted by human intervention in the form of various environmental alterations such as gravity shift, air flow rate and material temperature and density, in an attempt to push it into a new typological structure. We therefore acheive complexity within the vertical structure in the form of branching and twisting of each individual arm.

SOFT ROBOTICS Technology Seminar Graduate Work UCLA | 2016 SOFTBOTICS

This project challenges the current abilities of soft robotics in the realm of dexterity and autonomous interaction. A prosthetic device was added to the KUKA arm which could interact with a common object. The creviced bulbous object directed the design of the prosthetic, leading us to develop a hard limb-soft joint prostethic which would be able to grab onto the object in order to pick it up and move it. We found it best to mimic one of the few devices equipped to deal with such objects - the hand and fingers. Composed of hard 3D printed parts connected by soft inflatable silicone joints, the silicone robot deforms when triggered by touch sensors to inflate and reposition the 3D printed limbs in order to grab the object, mimicking the action of a thumb and index finger. AUTONOMOUS OBJECT Graduate Work UCLA | 2016

This project focuses on the ability of an object to change shape through material properties trigerred by sensor data. The major deformation of this object is achieved by a combination of actuator motions and material properties through a soft joint - rigid panel structure. Working with varying elastic properties of silicon, a skin was developed which was a combination of an elastic stretchable grade of silicone, cast with a harder non-stretchable silicone panel system of varying sizes. The panel layout was computer generated based on curvature analysis - with varying sized panels which interlocked with one another upon deformation of the surface. Embedded with photocell sensors and servo motors, the objects arms were designed to deform through material elastic properties to reveal a translucent skin beneath the panelling system, allowing for varying intensities of light diffused along the underskin of the object.

Fabrication of the object involved milling of an MDF mold with the panel layout. Silicone was cast in two layers - the first pour was of the higher grade harder silicone which made up the panelling. The second pour was of the more elastic silicone layer which connected and acted as the soft joint between the hard panelling system. Once cast (ith a stretchable net material iwithin the silicone for strength, the skin was stichted together and supported on an inner wood structure which housed the electronics and motors that controlled the objects movement.

THE CLOUD Graduate Work UCLA | 2016

The Cloud was a project that entailed the design of a kinetic shading device to be attached onto an existing skylight. The robotic unit was designed to change shape, orientation and light quality by means of an openable and closable mechanism. The formal langauge was based on creating a voluminous attachment composed of domes with openable petals, which would be programmed to open and direct light based on the suns position. The basic framework comprised of alluminum sections and CNC milled wood. The domes were fabricated manually with fibreglass, resin and speckle and assembled onto the wooden framework with custom designed 3D printed hinges and off-the-shelf nuts and bolts. The remainder of the envelope comprised of stretched fabric painted over and hardened with wood glue. Movement in the petals was acheived through a combination of servo motors controlled by raspberry pi boards and hooked up to metal screw rods to be screwed open and closed.

ARTIST’S STUDIOS Undergraduate Work | Thesis Goa University | 2014

The aim of this thesis was to create workshops, studios and interactive spaces to enhance the creation of art and create an atmosphere for artists to feel free, relaxed and comfortable while at the same time also being open to the public. In one space, an artist will be able to create, display, discuss, and sell his or her artwork. The design was created in sync with the site - split into 3 levels. The highest level of the site being the entry level, houses the more public activities such as the lobby, galleries and library. On entering the institution one experiences expanse as it opens out to the view of the valley. The galleries which are located on either side of the entrance lobby are placed at an angle, thereby opening the lobby out to the vista created of the main stairway which cuts across the site, looking onto the valley and hills beyond; and within the site- the restaurant and decks with outdoor art displays and workshop spill-out spaces as well as the amphitheatre are directly visible allowing a visitor to at once feel the activity, art and liveliness of the place.

*Shortlisted and presented at NIASA (National Institute for Advanced Studies in Architecture) Thesis Competition among top 10 Projects from the West Zone of India.

ARTIST’S STUDIOS Undergraduate Work | Thesis Goa University | 2014

The lowermost level of the site houses the private areas such as the private work studios and studios with attached accomodation for visiting artists which are located at the other end of the site, away from the public areas but accessible to the restaurant and library. These also open onto a common outdoor workspaces where artists can mingle and work together if they so desire, facilitating exchange of ideas and collaboration in artwork. The accomodation section with attached studios is designed such that it follows the morphology of the site, fitting into the contours, along three levels. The roof profile through the entire design is split such that the studios and workshops receive north light which washes over the interior surface of the workshop roofs. In order to span large areas, and have large interior volumes, it was proposed to support the building structurally with steel. Hence, the use of steel spaceframes and sections. The large workshop spaces and galleries have been given a feeling of lightness by raising the roof up, on steel sections with glazing, such that the space does not give one a feeling of total enclosure and bulkiness. In addition, this acts as a design feature, which will create patterns with the internal lighting post sunset.

WATERFRONT HOTEL & COMMUNITY CENTRE Undergraduate Work | Urban Design Goa University | 2014

As part of the overall urban design project which involved creating a master plan for the extension and partial replanning of Mapusa city in Goa, India, we were required to develop and design one of the public spaces/blocks within the city. For this, we proposed a business hotel and recreational centre along the Tar rivulet (the banks of which were currently used as a site for squatters), thereby revitalising it as well as using the added benefit of it being a scenic area. It was proposed to develop the area edged by the Tar rivulet, opening the city toward it, revitalising it and providing greenways, interesting and viable business’s and recreational facilities(restaurants/cafes/coffee shops/ ice cream parlours/art galleries/sports facilities) creating urban mobility along the waterfront along with high-end retail facilities mixed with residential throughout the remainder of the site. This development will in addition to providing for the general public, become a popular destination within Mapusa and also draw tourists from the neighbouring areas of Calangute, Anjuna etc.

RENOVATION & EXTENSION OF OLD GOAN-PORTUGUESE HOUSE

Personal Work Goa, India | 2012-13

Set amidst sprawling lawns on a 3,925 sq mt plot in Ucassaim, Goa, this project was a renovation and extension to a 125 year old plus villa built during the Portuguese Rule in Goa. Purchased in a dilapitated condition, the rear of the building was pulled down and rebuilt with modern day materials, while still retaining the old architectural style. The building was planned such that it would consist of two houses - one contained in the existing old house which would be rebuilt structurally (intended to be a weekend home) and the other to be in the extension, connected by an intermediate services and housekeeping section. However, the property is currently leased out to a photography school - “The One School Goa (www.theoneschoolgoa.com).Various finishing materials such as stone (marble, granite, jaisalmer and marble inlay work), artifacts and antique wooden carved pillars from run down havelis were sourced from the state of Rajasthan. Portuguese themed mouldings and furniture were sourced from Old Goan houses in Goa. Various cornices and mouldings were made for the extensions to resemble the Old Goan architectural aesthetics.

WOODWORK & CRAFT Side Table | Personal Work 2016-17

This was a side project worked on while at UCLA, using rhinocerous to generate drawings that were fed into the laser cutter to cut and etch plywood. This side table was designed to house a light fixture on the inside which would glow through the cut pattern. The fabrication came out of the need for a shorter than normal side table to be in level with a mattress on the ground, and designing and building it myself came from the need to save money and the want to design and build my own furniture.

WOODWORK & CRAFT Personalised Gift Box | Personal Work 2016-17

This gift box was designed as a personalised gift for a friend drawing from her fascination with astrology and the zodiac. It was fabricated in plywood using the laser cutter to etch and cut the design.

WOODWORK & CRAFT Fridge Magnets | Personal Work 2016-17

Another side project using the laser cutter was these wood and acrylic cut fridge magnets.
