WELCOME TO THE MID CAPE

Y

ou would be hard-pressed to find anywhere in New England where there is more to see, do, and experience than in Barnstable and Yarmouth. These two popular and centrally located towns offer a wide range of eclectic offerings for the visitor and resident alike. Greater Hyannis and Yarmouth Chambers stand ready to accommodate every visitor’s needs, whether it be advice on what to see and do or where to stay and eat. Both Chambers can outfit you with maps, brochures and a wealth of knowledge that will make you feel like a local. The Town of Barnstable’s seven villages provide distinctively different experiences. Villages are located along both Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound. Hyannis (including enclaves of West Hyannisport and Hyannisport) is the Cape’s most renowned village and is closely associated with President John F. Kennedy and his family. Beyond the village of Hyannis, its six sister villages are Barnstable Village, Centerville, Cotuit, Marstons Mills, Osterville and West Barnstable.

The 17-square mile Town of  Yarmouth, the Cape’s second oldest town, incorporates three sibling villages —West and South Yarmouth on the Sound side and Yarmouth Port on the Bay. This trio of villages — offering 39 miles of glorious coastline, 11 saltwater and four freshwater beaches, two dozen crystalline ponds and two boating and kayaking rivers — is an ideal family destination with wide-ranging family-friendly lodging options at every price point. This guide features information that is based around the following categories: methods of touring; recreational activities; beachgoing; arts, history, and culture; accommodations; and dining options. There are also a few larger features on items made right here on the Mid Cape, local musical talent, the Yarmouth sand sculpture trail, the history of the Father’s Day Car Show. Whether lodging, dining or a recommended itinerary is needed, a stop at any of the Chamber visitor centers will sort you out. For those seeking to make a move to the Mid Cape, reliable insider information and referrals will ease the transition.

MIDCAPE GUIDE 2019

If you’re seeking locally crafted delights — from edibles to décor, gifts to locally crafted beer — look no farther than Barnstable and Yarmouth. These two centrally located Cape Cod towns produce a variety of unique and useful items that are all Mid Cape made.

BEER BAKED GOODS

On your way to Yarmouth’s beaches, stop at Great Island Bakery for some of their homemade breads, quiches, or popular elephant ears. When she isn’t performing musicals at local theaters, owner Sara Sneed is baking up delights at The Bashful Tarte, newly located in South Yarmouth. Her cakes were once featured on Martha Stewart’s wedding blog. The villages of Barnstable have their own collection of delicious bakeries including world-famous Centerville Pies and Hyannis’ Pain D’Avignon. If you find yourself in West Yarmouth and have a fixing for a sweet, head to Englewood Baking Company. The Bashful Tarte, 23 Whites Path South, South Yarmouth; Centerville Pies, 1671 Route 28, Centerville; Englewood Baking Company, 572 Route 28, West Yarmouth; Great Island Bakery, 46 South Street, South Yarmouth; Pain D’Avignon, 15 Hinckley Rd, Hyannis

Two breweries in Hyannis offer yearround selections of creatively crafted beer, both for tasting and taking home. Barnstable Brewing has a tasting room on West Main Street with seven beers on tap. Since 2017, the Connor family has operated this micro-brewery, featuring styles such as Russian Imperial Stout and Double New England IPA. Cape Cod Beer has been brewing beer since 2004, expanding to their current location on Phinney’s Lane two years later. Their best-selling Blonde, Red, IPA and Porter are served alongside dozens of specialty and seasonal brews in their lively, event-packed tasting room, and available at restaurants and package stores throughout the region. Barnstable Brewing, 485 West Main Street, Hyannis; Cape Cod Beer, 1336 Phinney’s Lane, Barnstable

BOAT CANVAS & SAILS

Cape Codders relish their sea-going lifestyle, and Ocean Tailors has them covered. Open year-round, local artisans craft custom marine canvas and cushions at their “stitching room” located on White’s Path, South Yarmouth. Their fabric selection includes designer looks and UV-resistant and washable materials for one of kind, comfortable and long-lasting cushions for your boat or home, as well as full furniture upholstery services and custom-made awnings and shades. Barnstable Canvas Company has completed 2,000 marine, residential and commercial canvas projects since it was established in 1997. Barnstable Canvas Company, 355 Yarmouth Road, Hyannis; Ocean Tailors, 65 Whites Path, South Yarmouth

CANDY

There is something very sweet about the Mid-Cape: its candy shops. T

wenty-Five years ago, the Inaugural Father’s Day Car Show was the brainchild of the then Hyannis Area Chamber of Commerce, under the presidency of Frank Catania. The Chamber was seeking ways to increase visitation and commerce within Greater Hyannis by creating an event with wide appeal. Catania had been a motorcycle aficionado who attended a car show in another community and began to imagine how such an event could work within the Greater Hyannis community. He brought this idea to the Board of Directors, who immediately latched on to the concept and created a committee to begin planning. Local car buff, Hank Farnham was invited along with several other like-minded individuals to spearhead this movement. And so the first Hyannis Main Street Father’s Car Show took place on Sunday, June 19, 1994 and the Chamber’s marketing message to locals and visitors alike became “bring Dad to the Car Show!” The number of car exhibitors was nominal as compared to today’s 300 vehicles, but as the years passed, more and more vintage car owners joined the show allowing it to grow to host an estimated 50,000 plus visitors to Hyannis Main Street and the surrounding area each year.

MIDCAPE GUIDE 2019

Looking for good local music? With venues large and small and musicians performing in any genre you can think of, the Mid Cape is where it’s at. We talked to some local performers to learn more about how they got started, what their shows are like, and what they do when they’re offstage.

Dan Blajda

POLKA DAN’S BEETBOX BAND

“My father was a violinist, and his ancestors in Poland were violinists, so I grew up with it and just carried on,” says Dan Blajda, leader of Polka Dan’s Beetbox Band. His family roots are in a rural section of Poland, where the main crop is sugar beets (thus the Beetbox Band). “We’re a lively bunch,” he says. “It’s kind of a modern take on a lot of older polkas. We do a mix of very familiar polkas and traditional village songs. We try to keep the audience engaged and get them dancing. Most people don’t know how to polka anymore, but the crowd has a good time.” The Beetbox Band has played at Cape Cod Beer in Hyannis, the Hyannis Open Streets festival and Windmill Weekend in Eastham. Blajda, who lives in West Yarmouth, owns Ocean Tailors, which specializes in custom canvas and cushions for marine use. Rayssa Delorey

CLÃ DA BOSSA NOVA

Rayssa Delorey was working as a hostess at the Roadhouse in Hyannis when jazz trumpeter Lou Colombo asked her to sing “The Girl From Ipanema.” It became a weekly thing and then someone asked if she had a band that could perform at a festival. She said yes — but she didn’t. “I knew I had six months to figure it out so that’s when I built my first band,” she says. Eventually that led to the formation of Clã da Bossa Nova, a quintet that plays regularly at the Grand Cru Wine Bar & Grill in Hyannis and the Cotuit Center for the Arts. They also play the Arts Foundation concerts in Aselton Park during the summer. “We’re a very upbeat band,” says Delorey who lives in West Yarmouth and works for a biotech company. “We play a lot of bossa nova standards and then we bring a little bit of samba into the mix.” “It’s kind of like a tropical party. We want people to get up and move around and have fun.” Grand Cru Wine Bar, 1225 Iyannough Road, Barnstable, www.capecodderresort.com/live-jazz/cape-cod, Cotuit Center for the Arts, 4404 Route 28, Cotuit, www.artsonthecape.org P H O T O B Y J O E N AVA S / ORGANIC PHOTOGR APHY

Kate Whouley

CAPE COD CONCERT BAND

Kate Whouley was in junior high when a doctor recommended that she play a wind instrument to help with her asthma. She was interested in the clarinet, but her mother brought home a flute. “At the time I wasn’t happy about it, but it was actually the best decision she ever made,” says Whouley. A writer and teacher who lives in Centerville, Whouley is a longtime flute player with the Cape Cod Concert Band, which performs free shows at the Saint John Paul II High School auditorium in Hyannis. “A concert band has about 45 performers, all on woodwind, brass and percussion instruments,” she says. “We have no string section and that differentiates us from an orchestra.” Band director John Hagen is a huge fan of John Philip Sousa, so shows usually include one piece by him, she says. Other works include classical pieces and Broadway overtures. “It really runs the gamut, depending on the theme of the concert,” she says. Cape Cod Concert Band, www.capecodconcertband.org

Fred Clayton didn’t have access to a music school where he grew up in Alabama, but he made up for it later. A grant from the National Endowment for the Arts enabled him to take standup bass lessons in New York with jazz legend Bill Lee (father of filmmaker Spike Lee). Clayton moved to the Cape in the early 2000s and quickly found gigs playing jazz and blues, including covers of songs by B.B. King and Elmore James. “My crowd enjoys songs that go to the roots of music,” he says. “I’ve always been a go-getter,” says the West Yarmouth resident, who works days as a handyman. “I’m always able to find gigs.” He plays monthly at the Grand Cru Wine Bar & Grill in Hyannis and regularly at The Loft at the Cove in West Yarmouth. He also hosts a Sunday night blues jam at O’Shea’s Olde Inne in West Dennis. In addition to his solo work, he is part of the Clayton Restaino Project, which also plays throughout the Cape. Molly Parmenter SINGER/SONGWRITER

Molly Parmenter was 16 when her father taught her how to play guitar. “I had always loved creative writing, poetry and that kind of thing, so, I combined the two and started writing songs,” she says. Before long, she performed at an open mic in Hyannis. Her debut was terrifying, but that experience helps her nurture new talent when she hosts open mics every Tuesday at the Duck Inn Pub on Main Street in Hyannis. Parmenter, a bartender who lives in Marstons Mills, also performs her “singer/ songwriter soul music” as part of a trio at Harvest Gallery Wine Bar in Dennis. “If my music makes somebody feel better about something they’re going through or feel less alone, that is the ultimate,” she says. “That’s what music was for me when I was growing up.” Duck Inn Pub, www.duckinnpubcapecod.com

Since retiring last year as a math teacher, Sean Murphy of Centerville has devoted himself full-time to his passions: teaching Irish history at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in South Yarmouth, teaching Irish music at the Sons of Erin in West Yarmouth and performing Irish music wherever he can. Murphy has played the tin whistle and wooden flute for 30 years and has performed at a number of Irish pubs and the Cape Cod Irish Village in South Yarmouth. He’s also hosted a Sunday evening session at O’Shea’s Olde Inne in West Dennis for 12 years, which can have anywhere from six to 25 singers and musicians participating in “reels, horn pipes, jigs, slides, all the different forms of Irish music,” he says. “I didn’t learn to play music when I was a child,” he says. “It was later in life that I took to it, because it’s part of my heritage. CAPE SYMPHONY

Betsy Doriss switched from the clarinet to the oboe when she was in seventh grade. “It was love at first sight — or at first note,” she says. She’s been with the Cape Symphony since 1976. “I think there’s something that is unique to this orchestra under the direction of Jung-Ho Pak, in that he’s really tried to bridge the gap between orchestra and audience and make it a much more personal experience,” she says. You can see her onstage as the symphony’s principal oboist at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center in Hyannis — and a lot of other places. The West Barnstable resident teaches concert and jazz band at the Lighthouse Charter School. Doriss has played the accordion with the All Worn Out Jug Band, sang in a gospel trio called the Pioneer Valley Girls and performed the oboe on new age and folk recordings. “I’m not a one-trick pony,” she says. WHEN SAND BECOMES

Art

What is it like making the sand sculptures throughout Yarmouth? We asked the man who creates them. BY B ILL O’NEILL

MIDCAPEGUIDE.COM

33

C

ape Codders are familiar with the Yarmouth Sand Sculpture Trail. But did you know that the artist behind it started his sculpting career with…a snowman? When Sean Fitzpatrick’s daughter was 3, she asked him to build a snowman that looked like Santa Claus. “I had never done any serious sculpting before and really didn’t know where to start,” he said. “I made a big pile of snow and shaped it into something that looked like Santa Claus, while she watched me from the porch. I fell in love with the medium, the fact that I could create stuff so quickly on a rather large scale.” The next summer Fitzpatrick was looking for ways to entertain his daughter and son at the beach and built an eight-foot-long snake out of sand. “It was nothing special, but a bunch of other kids came over and were playing with it,” he said. “It gave me a lot of joy to see these kids’ eyes light up.” A few summers later, he was working on a sand sculpture at the beach and realized 200 people were watching him. In 2000, just a few weeks after creating a website about his sand sculptures, he was hired by Comcast to create 16 promotional sand sculptures across Massachusetts. In 2006, he quit his job as an auto mechanic to work full-time on sand sculpting, pumpkin carving and snow and ice sculpting. Fitzpatrick created his first Yarmouth Sand Sculpture Trail in 2011, which featured one sculpture at a beach and six at local businesses. The following summer he created nearly 40 sand sculptures in Yarmouth. The 2018 Yarmouth Sand Sculpture Trail had 33 stops, including the Yarmouth Police Station, the Pancake Man and the Y-D Red Sox home field. Fitzpatrick consults with each host to come up with a vision for their location. “Sometimes they don’t know what they want or maybe it’s something that is way over the top of what’s possible,” he said. “It’s up to me to kind of rein those ideas in and come up with a design. I tell them, ‘Your logo is on your business. Let’s create something fun.’”

34

One of his favorites from last summer was at Cape Cod Creamery. The Route 28 restaurant is known for the Adirondack chairs in front where people linger to enjoy a cone. Fitzpatrick came up with the idea of a sunglasses-wearing ice cream cone sitting in an Adirondack chair. “The owner of the business was blown away,” said Fitzpatrick. “He fell in love with the sculpture. It was like a part of the family to him. That’s the goal. He said he couldn’t believe how many people stopped to take pictures of it.” Last year’s Yarmouth sand sculptures were created in May and June by Fitzpatrick, his wife Tracy and Texas-based sand sculptor Fred Mallett. Most of them were created in a day by one crew member working for 10 to 12 hours. “We did all 33 sculptures in 17 days between the three of us,” he said. “It was quite a challenge.” Each sculpture requires about three tons of sand. Surprisingly, it’s not sand from Cape Cod beaches. “I know that sounds odd, bringing sand to a place where there are abundant beaches, but quarried sand has more of a square grain, and beach sand is more round,” he said. “It’s the difference between stacking bowling balls and stacking bricks, so I bring the bricks.” Three tons of sand is enough to create a sculpture four to five feet tall and three to four feet wide. “It’s just big enough to catch your eye as you’re driving by,” Fitzpatrick said.

MIDCAPE GUIDE 2019

A small amount of water is added to the sand, which is then compacted in plywood frames to squeeze out air. He compares it to avalanche science. “If you have a compact layer of snow and then a light fluffy layer and then another compact layer on top of that, the light fluffy layer has a lot of air and is susceptible to sliding and moving,” he said. “It’s the same with sand. You’ve got all that pressure from above that’s pushing down on it,

so you’ll have a collapse more than likely if you don’t get the air out. It’s really important that you do that right the first time. That makes for a nice solid sculpture that withstands the weather. Instead of the sand getting saturated when we get a lot of rain, it rolls off the outside.” As for sculpting tools, “there is no sand sculpting depot,” he said. “We have to improvise. I like to use a lot of cake frosting tools and masonry tools. There’s a lot of trial and error to find the right kit. “It’s funny because we have these big tool bags, but there will be two or three favorite tools that we’re always using. The rest are there just in case.”

Cake spatulas are one of his favorite tools, and he always has spares on his hand, so he can give some away to children. “I’ll stop carving and I’ll just give the kid the tool that I’m carving with. I’ll pull out another one and start working again. You’d be surprised what a little gesture like that means to a child. It’d be great if some day one of these kids said, ‘I remember when this guy gave me a tool, and that’s why I started my own business.’” When the carving is done, the sculptors seal the sand art with a solution of Elmer’s glue and water, which forms a thin eggshell-like barrier. That protects the outer layer from the wind and

MIDCAPEGUIDE.COM

rain. The sculptures require no maintenance and remain intact until autumn. “I think a big part of the appeal is that these sculptures aren’t meant to last forever,” he said. “If you happen upon one, you can wonder why someone put all these hours of work into it. The answer is to put a smile on someone’s face. If you can slow someone down, just for a few seconds, for them to enjoy that moment, as an artist, I think that’s all you can ask for.” For more information on Sean Fitzpatrick, visit www.FitzySnowman.com. DOGS ALLOWED

Dogs can certainly accompany visitors to the Cape when they are on their family vacations. Navigating any seasonal destination with a canine friend can be challenging however, public lands and businesses here on the Mid Cape can be canine friendly. DOG PARKS Dog Parks have been sprouting up from Falmouth to Provincetown. On the Mid Cape is the Yarmouth Dog Park and Barnstable Dog Park, with their three separate yards for large and small dogs and training. Got home late and want to take the dog after sunset? No worries. At the Yarmouth park there are solar-powered lights to extend the visitation hours. Barnstable is open dawn to dusk. Barnstable Dog Park, 1431 Phinney’s Lane, Barnstable; Yarmouth Dog Park, 452 Buck Island Road, Yarmouth;

OCEAN BEACHES Almost all beaches prohibit dogs in the summertime (in the off-season — Sept. 16 to May 14 — they are welcome, but need to be leashed). The one exception on the Mid Cape is Sandy Neck, which allows dogs on the off road vehicle section of the beach. You can take the dog with you if you have a yearly ORV sticker, or you can park in the main lot and walk your dog from the gatehouse down the access trail to the ORV beach. Sandy Neck Beach, Sandy Neck Road, West Barnstable DOG-FRIENDLY RESTAURANTS Most restaurants with open, outdoor seating in the villages of Barnstable and Yarmouth allow dogs. Health codes strictly prohibit non-service pets inside. This includes restaurants on Hyannis Main Street and Hyannis Harbor, and Route 28. We recommend calling ahead to check on the availability of outdoor seating.

There are many ways to get out and about to see all the Mid Cape has to offer. Most people cruise around by car, but there are a whole host of other options.

BASS RIVER KAYAK AND PADDLE BOARDS The best way to explore Cape Cod’s estuaries, inlets and shorelines is in a kayak or on a paddleboard. This shop has you covered. No reservations necessary. Orientation, life jackets and paddles included with rentals. You can buy kayaks and paddleboards there as well. The Smith family has rented and sold kayaks to locals and vacationers for more than 18 years on Bass River. 118 Main Street, West Dennis, & 40 Main Street, West Dennis, 508-362-5555, capecod kayaking.com

DUCKMOBILES These completely restored military amphibious vehicles cruise down the main streets of Hyannis, and visitors see where the Kennedy family went to church and where JFK gave his Presidential election acceptance speech. Then you plunge into the water and glimpse a lighthouse, some of beaches around the harbor, and waterfront properties. Trips last about 45 minutes, and be ready to quack. Trips depart from 437 Main Street, Hyannis, 508-790-2111, duckmobile.com

HARBOR CRUISES You can do a Lighthouse Harbor Tour with Bay Spirit Tours where you will pass a replica of Brant Point Light in Hyannis inner harbor, then continue to Point Gammon Light on Great Island, (weather dependent). From there you can view the navigational tower at Bishops & Clerks on the way to Hyannisport to see the Kennedy Compound, pass Hyannis Harbor Light and then back to Hyannis inner harbor. There are also sunset and music cruises and rides on their new sailing vessel, the Bay Breeze, a 45’ Lock Crowley designed catamaran. On the northside, Barnstable Harbor Ecotours naturalists will help you discover all the wonders of the many sandbars of Barnstable Harbor. Care to jet around the harbor in a touring speed boat? WHALE WATCHING AND SHARK EXCURSIONS

P H O T O C O U R T E S Y O F H YA N N I S W H A L E WAT C H E R S

The largest animals on earth roam the waters off Cape Cod regularly, and they are a sight to behold. Each one—from the common Humpbacks to the rarer, endangered Right Whales—has unique markings and entertaining antics. Come watch them in their natural habitat aboard the Whale Watcher, a 130-foot-long by 28 foot-wide vessel powered by five water jets (no propellers). If you want to leave from Hyannis, Cape Rib Tours offer a whale watch on a high-speed boat. For an up-close and personal view of a variety of local sharks, try cage diving. Bounty Hunters’ vessel Fins has been outfitted to run at speed with a super strong, custom-built cage, which holds two people at a time. You will be safe among the sharks, which will come right up to the cage to investigate. BIPLANES If you want to experience the Cape from the sky, the place on the Mid Cape to do so is on a biplane from the Cape Cod Airfield. You can see all of the region from a Waco YMF-5 Biplane, a replica of a late 1930’s design that was built in 1988. One or two passengers ride in the front cockpit to see stunning views of the beaches, bridges, and canal. Rides are 15, 25, and 35 minutes long. While Sandy Neck is known for its beach goers, there is also an extensive network of great trails behind the dunes. Likewise, Grey’s Beach has the Calley-Darling Conservation Trails nearby. You can also do the trails-to-beach experience in Audubon’s Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary. If you needn’t have a beach as part of your experience, trails in the Bridge Creek Conservation Area wind around old stone walls, abandoned fields and cranberry bogs. Old Jail Lane Conservation Area trails meander through wooded areas from Cape Cod Community College all the way to Phinney’s Lane. Such hikes in Yarmouth include those in Sandy Pond Recreation Park and Raymond J. Syrjala Conservation Area.

Located in Yarmouth, the Whydah Pirate Museum is the only place in the world you can see real pirate treasure — together with personal remains as weapons, jewelry and clothing — discovered by explorer Barry Clifford. Exhibits tell the secrets of pirates’ lives including that of Sam Bellamy, whose ship The Whydah wrecked off the Cape killing all but two men aboard. Clifford has been salvaging the site since its discovery in 1984. discoverpirates.com

CAHOON MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART

Based in the historic Crocker House a Colonial Georgian home built between 1775 and 1782, it is now a museum celebrating the work of current and historic Cape Cod artists, including its namesake artists Ralph and Martha Cahoon, who once resided there. This year’s exhibitions include a show from a famous group of Truro artists to a collection of vintage sailors’ valentines. The museum underwent a major renovation of its historic building and added a new addition while operating offsite at a temporary location. The Museum reopened in May 2016, with an additional 3,600 square feet of new space, doubling its exhibition space and giving enhanced access to the Museum’s collections. cahoonmuseum.org 64
