Welcome from Artistic Director Janis Laurs I am pleased to announce that the 2nd Adelaide International Cello Festival is taking place from 1–10 April this year! The outstanding line-up includes international cellists David Geringas and Pieter Wispelwey, and younger generation cellists Li-Wei Qin, Pei-Jee Ng, Pei-Sian Ng, Gabriel Schwabe and Nicolas Altstaedt. Former Paris Opera principal cellist Martine Bailly will share her great experience giving advice to our up-and-coming professionals. The Adelaide International Cello Festival again features the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (ASO) and its internationally renowned maestro Arvo Volmer, Music Director and Chief Conductor. ‘Cellissimo’ is an amazing showcase where guest stars can be heard in concerto appearances, in addition to the ASO Master Series featuring David Geringas. These concerts are held in the Adelaide Town Hall. Most activities are at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide, the festival’s major partner, with the iconic Elder Hall being the main venue for recitals and masterclasses. The popular Celebrity Lunchtime series returns, with students of the Elder Conservatorium performing in the Elder Conservatorium Symphony and Chamber Orchestras under the baton of Keith Crellin, as well as in a solo capacity and in chamber music. Composition students can also enter a competition, with the chosen works being performed during the Festival. Returning by popular demand, a cello will be built in 10 days and will make its debut in the closing concert of the Festival on 10 April! The Festival attracts huge interest and serves to bring together the most talented young cellists in Australia today and give them the opportunity to perform with and be guided by distinguished Australian and international cello teachers and performers. Best wishes and enjoy the Festival!

Rastrelli Cello Quartet Germany The singular Rastrelli Cello Quartet has been thrilling audiences with their renderings of non-traditional programmes since 2002. Steeped in the powerful Russian cello tradition, Kira Kraftzoff, Kirill Timofeev, Misha Degtjareff and Sergio Drabkine formed the ensemble with a mission to perform music “between the genres,” and their widely varied programs mix comfortably works by Bach, Saint-Saens and Tchaikovsky with that of George Gershwin, Dave Brubeck and Leroy Anderson. The name of the Quartet is taken from the eighteenth-century architect Bartholomew Rastrelli, who designed the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the home city of three of the four Quartet members.

The Rastrellis have performed in many of Europe’s great concert halls and, in addition to concert tours in Europe, the USA and Russia, they perform at such summer music festivals as the Beethoven Festival Bonn, SchleswigHolstein Music Festival, Darmstadter Festspiele, and the Meadowlark Music Festival. The Quartet continues to tour widely throughout the world: the United States, Russia, France, Italy, Portugal, Brazil, Ireland and Switzerland. The Rastrelli Quartet currently has five recordings (Rastrelli, Volumes 1-5) on the Amphion, TonArt and Manchester labels, as well as a 2008 release with music by Piazzolla entitled “Cello in Buenos-Aires.”

Cello Makers Alex Grant Australia/Scotland Rainer Beilharz Australia Frank Ravatin France Benedict Puglisi Australia Robert Acaro Australia Volker Beilharz Australia The Cello Challenge The Cello Challenge is taking place in the Radford Auditorium, at the back of the Art Gallery of South Australia. The Challenge is on to make a cello by hand in ten days from scratch – truly a challenge that will see the cello-making team working furiously from early morning until late into the night. The makers include our good friend Frank Ravatin from France and a group of nationally and internationally acclaimed makers from Victoria. The Cello Challenge event is open to the public and everyone is welcome to come along and watch the team at work. Many people will enjoy checking in on a daily basis to see how the cello is progressing and to cheer the team on to the final goal, which is to have it completed and ready for David Geringas to play at the Cello Festival finale concert, the “Cello Extravaganza”, on Sunday 10th April at 11.30am in Elder Hall.
