Raised Up

2015 | 2nd year design studio led by lola sheppard

Presented with the design challenge of introducing a type of public programming into the Don Valley Watershed that addresses environmental concerns, community involvement, or self identified issue in the area, I developed Raised Up. Raised Up introduces diverse programming that create an engaging environment that is designed to be reflective of many aspects of the iconic ‘summer camp’. It invites Toronto’s city-dwellers out of their normative comfort zone to experience and witness the often unseen and ignored beauty of the Don River and its relationship to the city.

Splitting the analysis into user types, allowed a unique focus throughout the design process. How could a simplified structure support all the user? How would it adapt for camping, versus relaxation? How far should it adapt? Who would be attracted to such a structure? Who amongst the city vs outdoor users would need more or less support?

Munio

2017 | 4th year design studio | project completed with meghan taylor

Trastevere Urban Plan Munio: To strengthen, fortify and protect ; typically in reference to a wall or road. This reference is apt for this urban renewal program that connects to and extends the existing ancient Aurelian Wall and builds against the Porta Portese.

As a mixed-use project the scheme incorporates a plethora of programming including an affordable living project, art gallery, music school and more. The project organizes itself as a cluster of third spaces***. It presents itself as a plaza where pedestrians are celebrated and a presently neglected area within Trastevere is transformed.

By selectively preserving existing structure on the site, and taking classical axis’s into consideration, this new scheme modernizes the site. Bringing it into the present day Rome while maintaining the tectonic urban moves that founded the city. Our design lays the form-work for the diverse community that Rome is growing to become. ***Urban life often poses two spaces for people to occupy daily. The home and the workplace. Other spaces can be defined as third spaces. Examples: churches, cafes, clubs, parks, are all third spaces

Providing a diverse set of units ranging from single bedrooms, to multi-family the residential scheme opens the site to be one of growth. It envisions and predicts a future that thrives on diversity and celebrates it.

McKinley Burkart

2018-present | Architectural Designer Vancouver,bc 2017 | internship Calgary ab

Overall On project teams I’ve been lucky to be involved through pre-design, schematic and construction phases. Ranging from small interior renovations to large development proposals my experiences have greatly informed my understanding of how the pactice and business of architecure interveaves and supports eachother in the real world. Fabrication Alongside architecture and interiors projects, 1 day a week to fabrication to support projects within the firm. With access to a makersapce and 3D printer I’ve constructed and prototyped many objects for the firm. During my time at the firm I’ve repaired the printer several times, and produced 50+ successful prints. Rendering As a member of the visualization/tech leads in the office, my ability to learn new programs have allowed me to learn and use adobe after effects, premiere pro, Lumion and enscape throughout several projects. Experiements with representation through the pre-design and schematic phases paired with fabrication exercises allows exploration into facets of a design to harmonize the physical and digital explorations.

Whilemsburge Involvement: production of presentation material A urban planning competition and located in Germany, the preservation of the garden houses were of the utmost importance. The proposition combining a multitude of building types proposes a largely green, community focused design. Nobelar Involvement: Preliminary organization and design Challenged to propose a new Nobelar Cultural Center featuring a program of fine arts, theater, drama, education and a local library. Our design embraced the multiple heights of the different programs ‘draping’ the roof over each becoming a tent-like enclosure.
