Fort Meade is the nation’s center for information, intelligence, and cyber operations. It is home to several major federal agencies, including the big one—the National Security Agency (NSA). Fort Meade is Maryland’s largest employer, and with the focus on intelligence and security, expect to find a lot of smart folks here. Here’s a fun fact: The NSA was once the largest employer of mathematicians in the world! Fort Meade is also home to the Defense Information Systems Agency, the Defense Media Activity, the Defense Information School, the Defense Courier Service, the United States Army Field Band, and the United States Cyber Command (established at Fort Meade in 2009). The area around Fort Meade is suburbia at its best. Situated between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, a posting at Fort Meade means easy access to the wealth of cultural opportunities these two cities offer without the downsides of city living. Some of the nation’s best museums, first-rate theaters, and historical sites are all a quick trip away. Sports fans will also rejoice in having two NFL teams, an NHL franchise, an MLB team, and an NBA team nearby. This area of Maryland is ideal for families and children. Schools in both Howard County and Anne Arundel County are top-notch, and the ubiquitous planned communities and subdivisions that pepper the region often have family-friendly amenities, including playgrounds, swim teams, and bike trails.

Traffic is a fact of life in Maryland, and residents quickly learn the ins and outs of the major thoroughfares. Rush hour lasts far longer than an hour—expect heavy traffic to begin as early as 6 a.m. and to last well past 7 p.m. Be sure to research commuting options and get a feel for the commute to Fort Meade during peak travel times. Many towns around Fort Meade offer alternate routes, but understand that traffic will be heavy on both major roads and side streets.

Columbia About Topping Money Magazine’s 2016 list of the “100 Best Places to Live,” Columbia is one of the most popular locales in the area. A masterplanned community founded in the 1960s, Columbia is comprised of ten “villages,” each with several neighborhoods offering a variety of home styles, recreation activities, schools, and shopping options. The village concept was designed to offer a small-town feel to residents, while still providing the amenities of a larger community. Each village has its own style, and all have a mix of property types, including townhomes, singlefamily homes, and apartments. The Columbia Association provides a nearly endless list of amenities—golf courses, an equestrian center, fitness clubs, outdoor concerts, a nature center, a farmers’ market, a dog park, and an ice rink, to name a few—but there is a cost to having these amenities at your doorstep. In addition to property costs and HOA fees, Columbia residents are required to pay an annual assessment based on property value, and there are additional fees for the use of some facilities. Most residents find the increased quality of life worth the cost, but be sure you fully understand the financial obligations that come with living in Columbia. Columbia is also a regional business hub, with 2,500 businesses operating in the area, and the Columbia Mall is a major retail center. Career-minded spouses have plenty of employment opportunities to consider.
Neighbors Columbia was designed to be a paragon of diversity and strives to have housing suitable for a variety of budgets.
Neighborhood Feel Townhomes, single-family homes, condominiums, and apartments are all found on Columbia’s beautifully landscaped streets. Some were built in the 1960s and 1970s when the community originated, and there is also more recent construction.

Crofton About A master-planned community (a large-scale residential area that includes extensive amenities), Crofton is a sought-after community south of Fort Meade and west of Annapolis and the United States Naval Academy. The town is encircled by a four-mile parkway, with all the Crofton elementary schools located within this family-oriented development. Crofton is growing, but still maintains a quiet, understated vibe. Named to Money Magazine’s list of the “100 Best Places to Live” in both 2007 and 2011, Crofton has a lot to offer, including numerous shopping options and excellent schools.
Neighbors Families flock to this master-planned community with lots of amenities for children.
Neighborhood Feel Crofton housing options consist of townhomes, apartments, and single-family homes. Mature trees are plentiful, adding to the park-like feel of the area.

Gambrills About Gambrills is a small town nestled between Odenton and Crofton. This friendly community is growing quickly and is close to the MARC commuter station in Odenton. Don’t let Gambrills’ small size fool you into thinking there isn’t much happening in this up-and-coming town. Shopping centers offer easy access to daily conveniences, and the recently constructed Waugh Chapel Towne Center is a favorite shopping destination, with upscale tenants including the popular Wegmans.
Neighbors Gambrills is a wonderfully diverse neighborhood. Many residents are government employees and commute to Washington, D.C.

Laurel About To the west of Fort Meade is Laurel, a town known for affordability and convenience. Mainly residential with pockets of retail space and corporate office parks, its two MARC commuter train stations make it popular with Washington, D.C. commuters. Laurel has a small historic district where you can see remnants of its past as a mill town. The area hosts the annual Main Street Festival, a celebration of Laurel that draws thousands of people and features a parade, food vendors, and bands. The city straddles three counties—Anne Arundel, Howard, and Prince George’s—and property taxes and school options will vary depending on where you live in Laurel. When looking for properties in the area, be sure you are familiar with the costs and benefits of each county. Millersville About Millersville is a small area known for being a bit more affordable than nearby Severna Park. Families are attracted to the more reasonable home prices and stellar schools. The homes are largely from the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s. The Childs Residence is the centerpiece of the town. Also known as the George Miller Residence and the Millersville Store and Post Office, the historic house dates back to 1840 and was the home of Millersville’s namesake. The building served as a post office and community store for 130 years and currently houses the Anne Arundel County Trails program.

Odenton About Located just south of Fort Meade, Odenton is a growing town that boasts great schools, varied housing options, and easy access to public transportation. Families are particularly fond of this area, and you will see many children running around Odenton’s many subdivisions. Odenton has the advantage of offering public transportation options for travel into Washington, D.C. There is a MARC (Maryland Rail Commuter service) station in town, which is a boon to commuters and those who wish to explore the nation’s capital. When you talk about Odenton, it won’t be long before you hear about Piney Orchard. This massive subdivision—it has more than 4,000 homes in dozens of neighborhoods—is the largest planned community in the county and dominates Odenton. Piney Orchard includes a nature preserve, an assisted living facility, four pools (one indoor), and an ice rink. Severna Park About
Severna Park is the most upscale of the communities surrounding Fort Meade . The town began as a stop on the Baltimore-Annapolis Railroad and has steadily grown since its founding in 1906. The Baltimore-Annapolis Railroad lives on as a walking, running, and biking trail that passes through Severna Park. Bordered by the Severn River to the southwest and the Magothy River to the northeast, Severna Park has many waterfront properties available, and all residents enjoy the beauty of the waterways. There are housing options for middle-class families alongside some spectacular properties with million dollar-plus price tags. In fact, Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak has a home in Severna Park! Families head to Severna Park for the safety of the community and the well-regarded schools. Four of the elementary schools in town are rated 9 on GreatScools.org, and Severna Park High School is one of only two Blue Ribbon-winning high schools in the district. Athletics are a big part of the school culture here. Break out your lacrosse sticks if you’re heading here—LAX is life in this town!
Neighbors Severna Park is a white-collar area with higher home prices than nearby communities. The town attracts higher ranking military officers, but younger service members will likely be priced out of Severna Park.
