“Inclusive design creates an environment where everyone can access and benefit from the full range of opportunities available to members of society. It aims to remove barriers that create undue effort, separation or special treatment, and enable everyone to participate equally in mainstream activities independently, with choice and dignity. (Mayor of London’s Office, the London Plan, 2004)

s.p.a.c.e values the importance of well planned urban design when trying to build an inclusive community. To help us fulfill our inclusive design dreams s.p.a.c.e partnered with Brisbane Architecture firm 'Arkhefield' and the Design Institute of Australia's Socially Responsible Design Committee 'Design Action'. Collectively we are working towards building the first universally design facility in Brisbane suitable for use by ALL members of the community.

“Somewhere on this planet, someone has a solution to each of the worlds problems. It might be one of us. With your help, we can build a more hopeful world. -Marianna Larned

The hall is owned by Scouts Queensland and is on State Government land. s.p.a.c.e and Scouts are in negotiations to hopes to a sub-lease agreement so that s.p.a.c.e can renovate and manage the hall for community use.

The Four Stages of Structural Impact

Creating change through innovative design. s.p.a.c.e has fundraised all the money needed to implement Karen’s designs. To help us manage our funds as well as our use of the hall Karen created four separate stages of implementation. We have enough funds to follow through with stages 1, 2 and 3 of the proposed changes. Renovations hope to begin in the near future. What this s.p.a.c.e!

“Caution! The left-brained worl wants you to “be realistic, quit dreaming, be more like us, get your head out of the clouds and your feet on the ground” To advance and prosper, steadfastly ignore that advice.” -Marilyn Grey

“We are a group of designers who have a strong social streak, who want to give back and use our skills to benefit those who need it most. We are a practice group within the Design Institute of Australia Queensland Branch who seek to assist community organisations with pro-bono design services. Design Action are also about designers taking the lead in proposing change in society, whether it is addressing social, environmental or economic issues – striving for a better world. We take action. Whether it is little and local, or grand and global, we strive to speak with actions as well as with words and designs.

The interior design team worked closely with s.p.a.c.e to make the hall as multipurpose as possible. s.p.a.c.e will be used by a diverse range of community stakeholders all of whom have different needs and usages for the facility. The designs allow all furniture to be removable so that rooms can be altered to meet the needs of different groups. Bathrooms are fitted out so that anyone can use the facilities without assistance. In time the kitchen will act as a servery. The section of work is very creative and still in the process of being finalised.

Funding

Finding the money to build the facility of our dreams. In May of 2009 s.p.a.c.e was named a major benefactor of the Lord Mayoress’s Community Trust Major Gift Round. We were ecstatic to learn that we had been given $100,000 to be spent on the developing our facility. In response to this generous donation we went on to match the donation by initiating our own community fundraiser entitled “The s.p.a.c.e 100 Project”. s.p.a.c.e challenged 100 people to in 100 days raise $100,000. Each of the lucky 100 were supported in raising $1000 that was then pooled to match the one hundred thousand donated by the Trust. Thank you to everyone that participated in our fundraising efforts.
