TSHWANE: A prosperous Capital City through Fairness, Freedom and Opportunity

Fairness • Freedom • Opportunity

MAYOR’S WELCOME Today it is my honour, privilege and pleasure to welcome you to the African Capital Cities Sustainability Forum (ACCSF). The purpose of the ACCSF is to forge a network and fellowship among African Capital City mayors in the objective of advancing city sustainability in Africa. Adopting sustainability as a primary objective of service delivery and urban development will result in greater prosperity and safety for city residents, and indeed for the world at large. It means providing for the pressing service delivery needs of our citizens while safeguarding the environment on which our cities depend. This includes creating the conditions for business to flourish, especially by leveraging the green economy as it continues to grow and flourish on the world stage. As a symbol of our commitment to sustainability principles, as embodied in the Paris Accord, the City of Tshwane is relocating to its new headquarters this month. Tshwane House is a five-star rated Green Building and one concrete example among many of how government and business can partner to deliver the future. We will be hosting a series of exploratory tours for you to experience the benefits of green infrastructure as it has been implemented in our city. The fact is that, supported by appropriate policies, design ingenuity, innovation, technical proficiency, robust implementation mechanisms and adequate infrastructural investments, African cities can create the conditions for high levels of quality of urban life. To this end, we look forward to an enlightening exchange of insights at the Mayoral Round Table taking place under the auspices of the ACCSF. As mayors and civic leaders, it is within our power to enhance the environmental health of our cities while achieving highly competitive economic prosperity in the medium to long term. There is no way to lead but by example. By harnessing our administrative leadership position, we can galvanise local government in our respective countries to realise the benefits of the principles of sustainable development. This year, our objectives are to reinforce the Network as a collective institutional objective. Our forum provides the opportunity to share the latest thinking so that we can achieve consensus on how to advance city sustainability going forward. This will enable us to set in motion a series of actions to give real effect to the Network by formalising a schedule of actions and communications.

Yours faithfully, Solly Msimanga Executive Mayor, City of Tshwane

SUSTAINABILITY GREETINGS Dear Participant, A very warm welcome to you all to Sustainability Week 2017, incorporating the African Capital Cities Sustainability Forum, along with 15 other sustainability oriented events. On behalf of our hosts, the City of Tshwane, as well as all our partners and affiliates, we extend to you the hospitality of this beautiful city and hope you draw inspiration, insight and motivation, not to mention the opportunity of meeting and building relationships with other key stakeholders in the sustainability industry. Once again the event plays host to the Mayors and representatives from more than 20 African capital cities from the four corners of the continent, all eager to find common ground for unpacking and solving common challenges as well as to debate African solutions. To all of you, we offer a very special welcome indeed. Sustainability Week is a unique event as it has been devised as a multi-sector, cross-cutting forum and we invite you to share your views and experiences in the various highly interactive conferences, seminars and debates. There is so much information for you to soak up but, at the same time, I encourage you to please engage with the speakers, thought leaders and other delegates. After all, your input will prove most valuable in helping us all to grapple with the challenges and opportunities that sustainability present us with. On a personal note, I would like to say a special ‘thank you’ to all the speakers who have so graciously agreed to prepare their presentations and stand before you to share their knowledge. Many of these speakers, facilitators and advisors (as well as you in the audience) have travelled great distances to take part in this forum. This opportunity for us to all gather here would not have been possible without the invaluable support and financial backing of our partners, sponsors, affiliates, suppliers and service providers. Without your support this event would simply not be possible. To them and everyone who is attending, I would like to say a heartfelt thank you for your participation at Sustainability Week. It is my sincere hope that your experience over the next few days will have a positive and lasting impact for you, your organization and everyone you work with.

Yours faithfully, Gordon Brown Convener

Green Building Conference Dear delegate, Welcome to the Green Building Conference. Energy efficient buildings, sparked by the desire to deliver buildings with low operating costs and greater self-reliance is driving Green Building practices in South Africa. It is now the norm in new buildings and refurbishments for architects to specify efficient technologies, with leaders in the property sector now looking beyond efficiency at implementing renewable energy generation technologies such as roof top solar. The move from Energy Efficient to Green Building will be the next broad-based move in the property sector as water and waste issues become just as critical as energy. These advances are being driven by Blue Chip tenants on the one end of the value chain and by the investment community on the other, seeking to future proof their portfolios. Now more than ever, building designers, constructors, and materials suppliers need to be at the leading edge of green building thinking, strategy, and design and that is precisely what the 11th annual Green Building Conference will deliver. The findings, submissions and proposals from this seminar will be published in various media and distributed to key people in the sector to contribute to the body of thought on these important topics.

Sustainable Energy Seminar Dear delegate, Welcome to the Sustainable Energy Seminar. Renewable energy is widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest opportunities, not only for investors and manufacturers, but also in terms of its role in unlocking human potential through advancing mobility, education, health and security. On day one, we examine Africa’s energy potential from a supply-side perspective. What is the business and investment case for renewable energy in Africa? What is our true renewable energy potential? What policies should government consider in this regard? What can South African independent power producers do to ensure they get their share of the African renewable energy business? One day two, we take a nuts-and-bolts approach demand-side factors that be improved through the application of sustainability principles, focusing specifically on the two key areas of energy efficiency and small-scale embedded generation (SSEG). The findings, submissions and proposals from this two-day seminar will be published in various media and distributed to key people in the sector to contribute to the body of thought on these important topics.

Green Manufacturing Seminar Dear delegate, Welcome to the Sustainable Manufacturing Seminar. At issue are two important themes: how to implement sustainability principles across the manufacturing sector, and the opportunities that the green economy holds for manufacturers. What are the key mile stones on the sustainable manufacturing roadmap? Can the green economy emerge as a significant manufacturing opportunity for South Africa? Throughout, the accent falls on Industrial Symbiosis: a resource efficiency approach where unused or residual resources (material, energy, water, waste, assets, logistics, expertise etc.) of one company are used by another. This results in mutual economic, social and environmental benefits. The findings, submissions and proposals from this seminar will be published in various media and distributed to key people in the sector to contribute to the body of thought on these important topics.

Responsible Tourism Dialogue Dear delegate This year has been declared as the Year of Sustainable Tourism Development by the United Nations Workd Tourism Organisation. It is therefore appropriate the annual Responsible Tourism highlights opportunities and tools to help the industry to make the tourism industry more sustainable. Today we will expand on our 5 previous dialogues to include critical elements of tourism sustainability. We are looking at this from a business, community and industry perspective. Tourism businesses need to become sustainable in order to help grow the South African economy. As part of one of the fastest growing industries, tourism businesses enjoy massive opportunities as both domestic and international demand for travel increase. But tourism businesses – now more than ever before – need to take action to stay ahead of the game. For many tourism businesses, however, the “how-to” still remains elusive. The Responsible Tourism Dialogue provides tourism businesses with a platform to gain insights on the latest developments in tourism. Every year, tourism experts take the stage to share information on successes and lessons learned. NIKI GLEN

With a strong focus on programme implementation, Niki’s key strengths lie in excellent teamwork as the only way to achieve successful implementation of strategies. Her vision is to ensure communities in South Africa reap the benefit equally from the opportunities presented by tourism. Over the past 4 years, Niki has developed networks and stakeholder relationships across many industries and has found her niche as a strategic thinker, programme developer, implementer, researcher, facilitator and speaker. She has helped negotiate a number of strategic partnerships for the STPP and has spearheaded large scale programme implementation through these partnerships. She has good working relationships with a number of local, provincial and national government institutions. Her career foundation is Professional Engineering, which she followed by an MBA that took her into a corporate role. Since her entry into Tourism 6 years ago, she has been invited to participate in various committees concerned with policy formulation, standard setting, programme development and curriculum development. She co-founded the STPP in 2012 of which the main focus is mass scale sustainable tourism implementation through forming strong partnerships across the entire tourism supply chain, using smaller tourism businesses as catalyst for localized economic development. She is the Editor of the Responsible and Sustainable Tourism Handbook, convener of the annual Responsible Tourism Dialogue as part of Sustainability Week (since 2001). She is passionate about sustainable tourism in South Africa and she believes that this attitude is reflected in the work that she has done countrywide.

Speakers... TAUBIE MOTLHABANE Taubie Motlhabane has more than 25 years’ experience in marketing, communication, public relations and events management in varied industry sectors such as banking, tourism, hospitality, broadcasting, print media and local government. She has a great passion for this field of work. Her work experience spans blue-chip private companies as well as government agencies, and she has extensive knowledge in strategy development, business planning and marketing management. Ms Motlhabane also has experience in public relations as well as print and broadcast communications. Taubie is the Executive Director; Convention Bureau and Visitor Services.

JACQUI TAYLOR Jacqui Taylor is intimately aware of the concerns and economic restraints in small town communities as she is the daughter of a farm manager who has lived and worked in rural areas. This is one of the primary driving forces behind her tenacious and energetic approach to improving the economic status of these rural communities. She has a keen understanding that Agritourism is about creating destinations and not just focusing on the individual farms to promote responsible tourism. With her international marketing work experience (Atlanta Olympic Games/ Cape Town Olympic Games bid), understanding and defining the travel destination and experiences offered by a farm and the formulation of marketing strategies and promotion is second nature to Jacqui. Through her worldwide travel experience while working with Meerlust Wines, Cape Town Tourism, Durban Tourism and the Orient Express Hotel Group she has developed a wide and varied contact list of key players in the tourism and agricultural industry which is beneficial for marketing a successful Agritourism operation for both local and international (urban-based) tourists who seek an authentic rural experience in South Africa. Overcoming many challenges as a child, she knows that life is not always easy and has worked hard to achieve her goals, but she also knows that self-improvement and self-determination is not always accessible to all. Creation of opportunities for people that seek a better life is important to Jacqui and the promotion of responsible Agritourism is uppermost for this cause. (Profile Written by Sonia Mountford)

DR AUDREY MUKWAVI MATIMELO Dr. Matimelo’s passion is to see people in rural and township communities engaging with their tangible and intangible assets for social and economic development, and becoming actors of their own development and not perpetual clients of handouts from NGOs and government. “I want to see women, youth and men in rural and township communities building networks to enable them start and manage small business ventures including tourism.” Based on her PhD research work that engaged with the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework and the Asset Based Community Development, Dr. Matimelo is convinced that there is untapped tourism potential in rural and township communities of South Africa. Having started off in her career as a Banker and now a community development practitioner, Dr. Matimelo is using her experience and expertise to promote the concept of selfreliance through Self Help Groups, a concept she has worked with since 2007 in rural and township communities of KwaZulu-Natal. Currently she is working with 1 874 people (women, youth and men) in 5 rural districts in KwaZulu Natal. Her work with the Self Help Group Concept has continued to help her develop immense research and programmes implementation skills for social and economic development.

Vision Zero Waste Seminar Dear delegate, Welcome to Vision Zero Waste. Here the accent is firmly on Industrial Symbiosis: converting one organisation’s waste or unused capacity into material that can be used by another. At issue are two key themes: how to optimise material flows in order to reduce the waste footprint, and how to beneficiate materials so as to create broad-based economic opportunities. Combining strategic approaches to waste management with case studies in beneficiation drawn from across a broad spectrum of industries, we discover the state-of-the-art in zero waste. The findings, submissions and proposals from this two-day seminar will be published in various media and distributed to key people in the sector to contribute to the body of thought on these important topics.

Sustainable Water Seminar Dear delegate, Welcome to the Sustainable Water Resource Seminar. Nowhere has the vital importance of water been brought home more sharply than in South Africa, with its ongoing experience of crippling drought. Business-as-usual simply cannot survive. In this context, we ask: Is the glass half-empty or half-full? On the supply side, we approach crisis as a basis from which to fast track or leap-frog to best practice approaches to sustainable water resource supply. On the demand side, we take a look at emerging technological solutions and share best practices from cities with similar challenges. The findings, submissions and proposals from this two-day seminar will be published in various media and distributed to key people in the sector to contribute to the body of thought on these important topics.

Youth & the Green Economy Dialogue Hackathon and Youth & the Green Economy Dialogue The Youth have been gathering at Sustainability Week every year since 2010 to learn and share about career and business opportunities in the Green Economy. In 2017 however Youth have been enticed and corralled into a 2/3 day think-tank billed as a Hack-a-thon, to help solve challenges faced by the City of Tshwane, and by extension all cities. This is most apt given the presence of more than 25 mayoral delegations from Capital Cities from around Africa, that are present at the event to discuss these very challenges. Introducing the Hackathon - an intense 3 day desk-top analysis of the key challenges cities face, and more importantly, bringing fresh eyes and fresh minds to these problems to try and leap-frog from current conventional paradigms directly to new cutting edge, but not necessarily high tech approaches that could pave the way for greater prosperity across all income groups in the City, not just now but into the future. We have high hopes, without placing undue pressure on our Youth, and look on with great curiosity as the group sets to work, and then presents their proposals/projects/prototypes at the Youth & the Green Economy Dialogue on Thursday 15 June in the Amber Room. We wish our Youth well in their work!

Who owns the project? • How willing are banks to lend on the strength of municipal off-take agreements for example? • What is the typical private equity portion required to fund such projects, and are developers able to finance this portion? Water Hygiene Convenience (WCH) A leaking toilet can waste 30 to 700 litres of water a day (about 7 bathtubs). On the contrary, the WHC Leak-Less Valve™ is a water saving device that can be fitted into new toilets and can be retrofitted into existing toilet cisterns, to detect leaks and save up to 70% of water that is currently lost through toilet leaks. The WHC Leak-Less Valve™ saves the money that would have been used to pay for the lost water. The difference between the WHC Leak-Less Valve™ and alternative products on the market is that, if you go on holiday for 21 days, using the alternative product on the market, you will lose water and money for 21 days. If you are using the WHC Leak-Less Valve™, you will save water and money for 20 days. Water Research Commission The WRC was established through the Water Research Act (WRA), Act No. 34 of 1971.
