Foreword SAIA The South African Institute of Architects (SAIA) was proud to host this, the fifth AZA Conference. Apart from drawing together architects and other registered architectural professionals, a large number of students joined the conference. Although the AZA was essentially a conference with world class speakers sharing the latest trends in architecture, it also included public events and the SAIA conference. By drawing together a large number of influential and interested members within the built environment, the aim of the conference was met, namely, to inspire leaders and influencers to be a part of the regeneration of major urban life. Held at The Sheds @ 1 Fox Street Newtown, an historic venue, the backdrop was set for a vibrant, exciting and inspiring event. Thanks goes to GiFA President, Daniel van der Merwe, who initiated the event as well as Alive2Green, who ensured its success. We also wish to thank the myriad of speakers, sponsors and other interested parties who worked tirelessly to make this an event to remember and one of which SAIA is justly proud. Obert Chakarisa Chief Executive Officer, The South African Institute of Architects

Afirica’s biggest architecture festival

The second decade of the 21st century heralds a dramatic new era where, for the first time, the majority of the world’s population will live in cities. This landmark trend towards almost unstoppable urbanisation will establish a new power relationship between the state and the city, which will drive business and politics in the future. It will change the way in which humans live, interact and survive in a precarious yet challenging environment. Daniel Silke, Political Analyst

Vote of thanks JDA The City of Johannesburg would like to express its gratitude to the Architectural community for welcoming the city to participate in and contribute to ArchitectureZA 2015. The presentations, discussions and exhibits stimulated new thinking and ideas for the city and highlighted a shared desire for a future city that is just, inclusive, working with informality, mobile and innovative. The conference further highlighted the City of Johannesburg’s commitment to partner with the built environment fraternity towards the future city. We look forward to being a part of future ArchitectureZA. Sincerely MMC Ros Greeff, The City of Johannesburg

AZA 2015 Future City Conference Report Back from the event 24th – 26th September 2015 Report Back from the event 24th – 26th September 2015 Architecture ZA (AZA) is Africa’s first and largest premier urban culture festival that gathers academics, students and architects around the globe together to discuss how architects and designers contribute towards urban environments and the value they add through their work. The South African Institute of Architects (SAIA) was the proud host of the AZA2015 Future City conference that took part in the heart of one of South Africa’s most iconic cities – Johannesburg. This year’s multi –faceted programme was structured to target the largest possible audience of architects and design fraternity professionals as well as students embarking on their careers within the sector. The City of Johannesburg played an important part of the conference because, as a “Future City”, it needs to collaborate with the built environment fraternities as critical partners in developing Johannesburg into an inclusive, resilient, economically active and creative city. Sponsored by PPC Ltd and Corobrik “Future Cities” drew local and international speakers who shared their expertise and debated critical issues around architecture and design and how they co-create the cities of the future. The conference was co-hosted by the Gauteng Institute for Architecture (Gifa) and also featured a Student Architectural Festival (SAF) curated by the University of Johannesburg (UJ). This report summarises the key presentations and insights that emerged during the three days of events, presentation and activities AZA “Architecture is a powerful weapon for social enablement. It plays a critical role in shaping the future of the city and architects have the potential to ignite social change and transformation. Their abilities can be used to create better living spaces that address the needs of today and pave the way for the people of tomorrow.” Daniel van der Merwe, AZA Chair, Architect with PPC Cement, President of GIfA

Shaping cities of the future can be a powerful tool for social transformation. In his opening address AZA chair, Daniel van der Merwe emphasised how this year’s ‘Future City’ theme is more relevant and urgent than ever before. “For the first time in human history the majority of humans are now urbanised”, he said and while this could prove to be the “biggest human experiment ever” the new era of urbanisation is already dramatically shaping the cities and countries we live in, offering new opportunities and creating new challenges as we collectively redefine the future of our planet in the face of climate change and unprecedented demands on precious resources. As humans start living in closer and closer proximity to each other, we will have to evolve in completely new ways – changing how we live, engage, interact and survive as individuals and as part of a collective in our future built-up environments. Our concept and use of ‘space’ needs to be fundamentally redefined and shaped to support the needs of future generations. The United Nations estimates that 71.3% of South Africa’s population will live in urban areas by 2030 and by 2050, nearly 80%. To give you an example- Johannesburg and its population is set to expand by 66% over the next 20 years. High concentrations of people‚ buildings and infrastructure‚ increases risk to natural disasters‚ climate change and variability which makes reducing urban risk critical to achieving sustainable urban growth. Safety‚ particularly in public spaces‚ is an essential ingredient for the creation of liveable and prosperous cities. Urban spaces need to be designed and managed in a humane way that makes citizens feel part of communities, and which will make them feel safe from violence and crime. By 2030‚ South Africa must see more integrated‚ balanced and vibrant urban settlements but currently over 60% of the land projected to be included in urban areas by 2030 has yet to be designed and developed. To achieve this‚ the country must clarify and relentlessly pursue an integrated vision for urban development.”

Speakers - Presentation Summaries 24th – 26th September 2015 Khalied Jacobs (SA) The Architecture of Consequence – Creating Meaning in Spaces Cape Town based Khalied Jacobs presented current and past projects that show case how architecture can respond to the community who utilise the space. The first project was the Cape Town Waterfront community centre that engaged the community in the design process of the centre. The Tygervalley Shopping centre incorporated principles of how to create space and remove barriers to perception that shopping centres are private places when they could be used for more public access points to city streets. A project that enabled subsidised housing for women enabled choice and diversity in housing typologies and addressed consequences of Apartheid spacial planning that has led to the increase of informal settlements. The cycle routes in Khayalitsha is a project that works with existing infrastructure and, by engaging with the community, creates opportunity for public spaces and informal trade. Thorsten Deckler (SA) Informal settlements are the Future Cities In the next few decades we will see the development of informal settlements into the next big city hubs according to Thorsten and his projects from Diepsloot to Ruimsig informal settlements (in collaboration the University of Johannesburg and the community) respond to existing infrastructure and services and how they can be expanded upon. The project, Dream City uses new urbanism principles to respond to the failures of the existing industrial area in Marlboro. Dream City suggests abandoned warehouses to be used as housing for the community and this ‘dream’ was made possible by entering into dialogue with all stakeholders: residents, government and urban designers. The conclusion drawn from the presentation is that in order for future city planning to take place, more collaboration amongst multidisciplinary teams is needed. Steffen Lemmerzahl (Switzerland) Parametric – The technology to remodel urban areas In this presentation, Steffen explored computer generative design (Parametric) as a design tool to organise spaces, create neighbourhoods and program typologies with variations. This design tool has been used in several of his projects, with a housing initiative in Zurich a focus. The local project that incorporated the parametric design is the Marshall Street carwash in the Maboneng precinct (Johannesburg) and its design looks at how to create variations in modular design of spaces around a central core. Technology like this is making the design process far simpler and a lot quicker enabling rapid and accurate solutions to urban regeneration MMC Greef COJ: Development planning Regenerating the CBD The talk by MMC Greef covered the current regenerative projects undertaken by the city of Johannesburg to redevelop the CBD for future generations guided by spatial development plans, corridors of freedom and small development precincts. The idea expressed is to create a compact city that relates to the concept of resilience with focus on eco assets, heritage and built form.

Peter Rich (Peter Rich Architects. SA) Sub-Saharan Spaces The presentation by Peter Rich gave a comprehensive overview of his approach to architecture through his seminal research into African concepts of space making in sub Saharan Africa and his mission to improve the quality of life of African communities. He also presented his award winning project, the Mapungubwe Interpretation Centre as well as projects currently underway which include the Thematic Master Planning for Aksum in Ethiopia and the Laetoli African Footprint Museum in Tanzania. Zahira Asmal Publishing – Creating Cities The introduction of her publishing company, The City, turns its focus to how cities are created and how they are deisgned. Zahira’s first book Reflections and Opportunities has already been published in three different languages and in over 17 countries. The current project that is creating much excitement is a place-making project in the Johannesburg inner city in collaboration with city mayor Parks Tau and the Johannesburg Development Agency. Alfredo and Arturo Brillembourg. (Urban Think Tank. USA, ETH Zurich) Research and Discovery Brillembourg’s research based firm, Urban Think Tank, specialises in the design practice of contemporary architecture and urbanism, and in conducting research and fieldwork in urban slums. The focus of the presentation highlighted the importance of the education and development of a new generation of professionals, who will transform cities in the 21st century. Brillembourg’s published a series of books and other publications which shares this knowledge across many networks in and out of Sao Paulo. Yara Sharif. (UK) Architecture of resistance Yara in her presentation aims in empowering communities through research in design which is evident in Riwaq’s 50 village’s project in creating architecture of resistance. She states maps cannot be neutral and as such are instruments of conquest. In the 50 villages project Yara through a poetic narrative describes the project as stitching together of a fragmented historic landscape of Palestine that consists of 50 historic centres. In the project Latex House of Clothes she looked at how to break isolation using layering to create a memory belt of events, views and a community centre. Julia King. (UK) Sanitation and urban growth Julia King a research based architect in the United Kingdom in her presentation emphasised the importance in architecture of creating and how important it is not to romanticise poverty. She further explained that buildings mirror the kind of societies that we live in or use in our everyday life. The problem is that contemporary cities fail to engage complexities of the real world. The project that was presented was the sanitation crisis in Savda Ghevra, a small town in India which raw sewage posed as a health

7

hazard to the community. Through engagement with government, Julia was able to design a large sewage pit or tank which houses or buildings could connect to to. The conclusion drawn was that rapid urbanisation is resulting in failing sanitation systems because these systems were excluded from the the initial design of cities. Dr Hannah Le Roux (University of Witwatersrand) Culture and context The presentation by Dr Hannah Le Roux highlighted the dualism of space and how it’s been used. Through research based design and engagement with the community in the Kwa Thema project done in 2007 Dr Le Roux was able to understand the cultural context and that community were made of parallel of activities. Richard Stretton (Koop Design) Timber Housing Solutions Richard presented the advancement of wood (timber construction) as a solution to housing problems. In the presentation a variety of projects mostly competition entries were graphically shown of how timber has incorporated into the designs. He also mentioned the common timber technologies such as laminated strand lumber, laminated veneer lumber and cross laminated lumber. Peter Kidger (Clay brick South Africa) Clay bricks and creativity Peter Kidger gave a brief presentation into the possibilities of clay brick with the main focus on aesthetics and its physical properties that can be used for acoustics. Images of international as well as local buildings that use clay brick were shown such as the Frank Gehry building in Prague to demonstrate the creativity that clay bricks can offer an architect. Beatriz Colomina (USA) Adapting to a changing world The presentation presented by Beatriz Colomina was on the privacy and publicity in the age of social media and how has it redefined spaces. Beatriz focuses on Hugh Hefner as a public figure who began a trend of the bedroom becoming more than just a place to sleep in, but also a place where you can work, with the bed becoming the workspace. She also looks at how the younger generation is influenced by social media in the present and compares it to how it would have been in the past where technology was not as advanced. The conclusion that can be drawn from this presentation is that architecture needs to respond and adapt to the changes and the different needs of people and their everyday life.

Future City panel discussions: On the Agenda

* Does technology like parametric design hamper creativity and the freedom to express unexplored solutions? * Are architects being shaped by the systems of building? * Architects and their role in communities

UJ Exhibition opening Prof. Lesley Lokko from University of Johannesburg opened the exhibition in the Main Hall introducing the Unit System Africa to delegates. The exhibition included work of the Masters Students of University of Johannesburg curated by Dieter Brandt and installed with the assistance of the students. The work demonstrated interesting attitudes to different methodologies of approaching architecture resulting in innovative and relevant projects within different contexts. An exciting programme of student-led and run talks, walks and workshops ran parallel to AZA2015, offering the nation’s students, delegates and the general public a glimpse into what’s on the mind of the next generation of architects, urban designers and budding intellectuals. The festival was organised by the University of Johannesburg, South Africa’s youngest school of architecture. The event opened with the award-winning documentary, The Competition, which was shown on the African continent for the very first time. With sponsorship from some of Gauteng’s most generous and forward-thinking practices, the Spanish director of the documentary, Angel Borrego Cubero, hosted a Q&A session after the screening where he shared personal insights that weren’t included in the documentary. Two exhibitions were also up on display: one showcased the finalists in the Des Baker awards, and the other, some of the best current work coming out of UJ’s department of architecture, including work from its brand-new graduate programme, ‘Unit System Africa.’ UJ Btech exhibition set up by the 2015 BTech students utilised the main exhibition space and the rustic chill space. A special mention was given to the design teams whose idea was to innovatively showcase the work of students from hanging boxes and work from walls and trusses. The exhibition also included a popcorn machine that each student took turns operating during their shifts and a beautiful moss graffiti wall depicting an eland.

Healthy debates: The opportunity to engage with different perspectives is how we learn and this is why the debates held were so pivotal to the whole experience for the students. Debate #1 – Tomorrow’s Architects Today. Architecture and architecture schools are forever evolving due to the students that come through the door. The combination of great students and great lecturers often leads to a great school of architecture and later on good architecture. This topic is an imaginative one, we challenge you to imagine the future student of architecture, the future school of architecture as well as the future of architecture. Dr. Finzi Saidi, Head of Department at the University of Johannesburg, chaired the debate with speakers Tuliza Sindi, practicing architect, students Greg McQueen from the University of Free-State and Kgao Mashego from the University of Johannesburg. Rich conversations came from the panel resulting in active audience participation. Debate #2 – Towards a New Social Agenda. Housing rights and property ownership for the urban poor is a critical issue; not only for providing access to infrastructure for all, but also for ensuring that basic human rights are met. Considering that development has not been occurring at the same rate of urbanisation for most African cities, this issue requires not only support from multiple stakeholders but also innovative solutions. Are governmental policies adequate when addressing inequality and social exclusion for affected settlements? Onthatile Makgalemela, student president of University of Johannesburg, chaired the debate with speakers Mikara Naidoo, practicing architect and Jhono Bennett Lecturer at the University of Johannesburg. Participating students include Adheema Davis from the University of KwaZulu Natal, Tebogo Ramatlo from the University of Johannesburg and Oratile Mothoagae from the University of Johannesburg. This was the most well received debate and student heavily engaged with topics surrounding social demographics within the architecture realm in South Africa. The debate addressed student issues surrounding race, context and economic stature.

SACAP Presentation A quick introduction into the South African Council of the Architectural Profession. This is a board which focuses on protecting the rights of Architects and the public who are practicing in South Africa. They spoke about the registration process as well as the benefits of being a member of SACAP.

Films on show at the event: Films on Show during the event were a much welcome addition to the intense discussions and networking. These included: The Competition Director: Angel Borrego Cubero A documentary of how some of the top design architects in the world, like Jean Nouvel, Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid, struggle to beat the competition for the National Museum of Art in Andorra. The director, Angel Borrego Cubero, followed these top firms over months recording the pressure that goes into producing an architectural masterpiece, from the designer’s initial sketch down to the draftsmen’s bolt. Robots of Brixton & Jonah Director: Kibwe Tavares The films by award winning Bartlett Architecture student, Kibwe Tavares, depict a turning moment within the architectural teaching space by allowing students to introduce new types of representation, in his case ‘film’ as a means of expression. Lagos Wide and Close Director: Bregtye van der Haag This film by architect, Rem Koolhaas and documentary film maker Bregtye van der Haag digs deep into Lagos, Nigeria in an attempt to understand what makes a city dysfunctional. This was an important film to enable students to interrogate their context from an urban and political perspective. Internet’s Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz Director: Brian Knappenberger This is an award-winning documentary about an internet genius, Aaron Swartz who tragically died at the age of 26. This film looks at the internet as a public space where a lot of private activities occur. It looks at issues of surveillance and how we establish degrees of ‘publicness’. Denise Fouche, Director of Endcode, chaired the discussion for this conversation around the documentary and informed the students about the importance of internet safety in this day and age.

It’s a Wrap! The student party hosted by the Student Steering Committee wrapped up this event. It took place at The Sheds and famous bands such as BCUC and Nomadic Orchestra performed. This concluded the activities for the week.

Des Baker Awards These awards were chaired by UJ B-Tech co-ordinator, Ken Stucke. He began by introducing the winner of the Be Your Building Competition, Heidi Lu for gracefully demonstrating the relationship between the body, the garment and architecture. He proceeded by introducing the Des Baker winners. In third place was the University of Cape Town, with the project titled Choose Wisely. In second place was Tshwane University of Technology with the project titled Earth Haven. In first place was the University of Cape Town with the project titled Deep in my Thoughts.

Tours Johannesburg Modern Guide: Brian McKechnie The tour looked at modern movement icons, from the Brazilian inspired White Mosaic Innes Chambers, to Marble Towers, through to the now dowdy Normandy Court and Hotpoint and Peter House. It ended with a visit to the refurbished Ansteys Building, that offers a viewpoint from the restored from the 20th Floor Observation Deck – Johannesburg’s own mid century Rock Centre experience. Johannesburg Retail Guide: James Ball A tour of the old retail district, Eloff Street, the Bond Street of Johannesburg, as well as the iconic Cuthberts and Markhams buildings, the legendary battles to save them, and exciting new projects in this part of the city. Johannesburg Cultural Heritage Guide: Salma Patel A view of what the demolitions and forced removals left behind, and what was lost in the ultimate destruction of a once integrated and diverse multi-cultural community that imbued Johannesburg with a distinctive character. The walking tour through Pageview started from the Fietas Museum which displayed a well curated collection of photographs by world renowned South African photographers, David Goldblatt and Paul Weinberg who documented the essence of a by- gone era. Stories of activists and “lived” resistance gave insight into the strong multi-cultural diverse community and its rich history that became fragmented by the social engineering policies of apartheid.
