T
his year marks the sixth anniversary of ALIVE’s “Men of Style,” our annual editorial spotlighting some of St. Louis’ best-dressed gents. When planning this year’s story, we took inspiration from the city itself and chose men who represented St. Louis’ energy and vitality through their professional, social and community-driven lives. From sophisticated attorney Jay Perez to energetic KSDK sports anchor Rene Knott, these men have styles all their own, but collectively represent what it means to be a modern man in the city. The resulting editorial (p.74), presented by Saks Fifth Avenue, takes place within the streets, spaces and sidewalks of Downtown’s Old Post Office District. Special thanks to General Manager Ingrid Mosley for use of the Old Post Office building, which served as our home base for the two days of shoots. From the Plaza’s clean lines to Terrace View’s patio overlooking Citygarden, Downtown’s most beautiful neighborhood was the perfect setting to showcase the well-designed wardrobes of this year’s Men of Style. We were excited to catch up with this month’s cover boy, Michael Drummond, who became a national household name on this season’s “Project Runway.” We go way back with Michael, a star in the local fashion industry, winner of last year’s Saint Louis Fashion Week Project:Design! contest and a 2009 ALIVE Man of Style. So when Michael began filming “Project Runway”—competing alongside 2010 Man of Style A.J. Thouvenot—we knew we had to follow both of our local-styleboys-made-good, and were thrilled to cheer them on, along with thousands of other St. Louis fans. Fashion Editor Jill Manoff, who has come to know Michael well over the years, caught up with him just after his return home; her story is on p.70. While every man commands his own style, there are definite trends for guys. Right now, masculinity in fashion is redefined in a few ways, with the rugged All-American, the bookish schoolboy and the urban rebel playing themselves out in fashion and lifestyle accessories. Jill Manoff puts together the ultimate pieces for these three of-the-moment men’s looks on p.86 in “The Manual.” Join us in celebrating men’s fashion at the Men of Style event at Saks Fifth Avenue in Plaza Frontenac on November 4. Honoring the 2010 Men of Style, the event will be hosted by special guest and Saks Fifth Avenue Men’s Fashion Director Eric Jennings.

JENNIFER SILVERBERg
Though not quite man enough to take up a career behind the bar, Matt likes nothing better than to break out his shaker and experiment with cocktails old and new at home, and test the results on himself, his wife, Beth, and any unsuspecting house guests. He puts his mad cocktail know-how to use in this issue’s “Cocktail Attire” (p. 28). When not warming a barstool and sampling the wares of his favorite mixologists, Matt is a regular contributor to a variety of area publications.
This month, regular contributor Jennifer Silverberg caught up with pizzamaker Sam Racanelli at his newest restaurant home, Pizzeria Tivoli in South St. Louis (p.32). She hadn’t seen Sam since their days back in The Loop at the first Racanelli’s Pizza. They had a great time catching up, eating great pizza and sipping a little Chianti. Being a food photographer definitely has its perks! When not photographing food, Jennifer keeps busy photographing the many people and places that make St. Louis an ever-interesting place to call home.
CArmen Troesser

St. Louis photographer Carmen Troesser looks forward to her time in the ALIVE studio shooting the latest styles. The monthly shoots are a nice change for Troesser, who also shoots a lot of food. “A pair of boots don’t melt or wilt after five minutes,” she says. More of her work can be seen at carmentroesser.com.
“Photographing the cover for ALIVE and the Men of Style have been the most exciting projects to date,” says Wesley. “Not to mention the most work. I watched over nine continuous hours of ‘Project Runway’ and ‘America’s Next Top Model.’” Having handled the lighting for a number of German “Vogue” covers while working in NYC, Wesley has also worked with many highprofile clients and photographers such as Steven Meisel. He graduated from the SI Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. Wesley has also contributed to “Marie Claire” magazine.

“Money follows passion, not the other way around,” says David Siteman Garland. It’s a belief that has helped him achieve success over the last three years as an entrepreneur, marketer and host/founder of “The Rise to the Top.” Now, this local young professional is sharing his insight, knowledge and passion in his debut book, “Smarter, Faster, Cheaper: Non-Boring, Fluff-Free Strategies for Marketing and Promoting Your Business,” releasing next month. Siteman Garland, who’s interviewed hundreds of business leaders, authors and experts since creating his business and brand marketing show in 2008, says he wanted to write a book about marketing and branding for the small business owner that would change their mindset and allow them to immediately take action. And true to Siteman Garland’s candid style, the book does just that, in a smart and approachable way. Siteman Garland breaks down the shift in the marketing and social media world, then presents strategies to improve your business and succeed—including being your own media source, using online video and building credibility. “The idea for the book came from an article I wrote about the future of marketing,” says Siteman Garland. But also from the mindset that success really happens when you build a business around a passion that makes you excited to go to work every day.” ($24.95, available at bookstores and smarterfastercheaper.com).

Ahead of the Curve The new 2011 Lexus IS 350 steers the standard for the luxury performance vehicle. By MATT SORRELL
> There was a time when luxury and performance were an either-or proposition for car buyers. Either you were buttoned up in comfort and style, or stripped down for acceleration and agility. Cocktail Attire
A man’s cocktail of choice reveals as much about him as what he wears or what he drives. Looking for a libation that tells your story? Then consider a classic and choose from one of these three styles of sips.
By matt sorrell
the city sophisticate You like holding court in the penthouse, making the rules, setting the style and generally being the sheik of chic. Drink of Choice:
The Martini Distinguished gentlemen from Bogie to P. Diddy have indulged themselves with this grandaddy of the modern cocktail. Its simple elegance still reigns supreme among tastemakers. Be Your Own Mixologist: • 1 3/4 oz. gin • 3/4 oz. dry vermouth Stir in mixing glass with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with olive. For a Twist: Try a couple of dashes of orange bitters for a pre-Prohibition take on this classic. Gotta-Have Gadget: If you decide
to go the Bond route and shake your martini instead of stirring, try this unique model with a built-in strainer, the Metrokane Fliptop Cocktail Shaker ($30, at Bed Bath & Beyond).
28 ALIVE STL NOVEMBER 2010
The Two-Fisted Adventurer You fancy yourself a man of action, tend to lead with your heart and not your head and value deeds over words. Drink of Choice: The Cuba Libre
One legend has it that one of Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders came up with this concoction during the Spanish-American War. It was also rumored to be a favorite of legendary man’s man and literary lion Ernest Hemingway. Take no prisoners!
the swinging hipster You fly with the night owls and like spending the wee hours hanging in the lounge debating literature, music and generally spinning tales—tall and otherwise. Drink of Choice:
The Manhattan Supposedly commissioned for a party held by Lady Randolph Churchill (yep, Sir Winston’s mom) in the late 1800s, this classic was allegedly a fave of the Rat Pack, in its dry version, and was a go-to drink for literary legend Jack Kerouac.
Be Your Own Mixologist: • 2 oz. light rum • cola • juice of half a lime
Be Your Own Mixologist: • 1 3/4 oz. rye whiskey • 3/4 oz. sweet vermouth • 1 dash aromatic bitters
Pour the lime juice into a highball glass over ice, add rum, fill with cola, stir and serve.
Stir in mixing glass with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a cherry.
For a Twist: Try other types of rum, like dark or spiced varieties. Drop the squeezed lime into the drink for an additional citrus kick.
For a Twist: Go off the grid completely and ditch the vermouth and play with other sweet wine-based liqueurs, like Campari or Lillet Rouge.
Gotta-Have Gadget:
Squeeze every last bit of juice out of that lime with the Breville Die Cast Citrus Press 800 CPXL ($180, amazon.com).
Gotta-Have Gadget: Keep your liquid
creation free of debris with the WMF Loft Strainer ($18, amazon.com). It has adjustable coils to fit in different size shakers and glasses, and a short handle that won’t get in your way.

Version 5.0 Nelly drives home another successful album. By cristy miller
> It’s been ten years since Nelly first hit the music scene. His freshman album, “Country Grammar,” catapulted him to hip-hop superstar status and he hasn’t slowed since. Now this multiGrammy-winning rapper is returning with his sixth album, “5.0,” releasing November 16 and has already scored a Billboard Top 10 hit with “Just a Dream,” which went platinum in October. I spoke with the personable and funny star to get the scoop on his highly anticipated new album. ALIVE: What was your experience like returning to the studio for your sixth album? Nelly: It was a different project, I guess, considering it had been a while since my last album dropped. It was good just being in a studio creating. And the process was business as usual, but I worked with a few different people this time that I never worked with before, like Don Vito, who produced “1000 Stacks,” Jim Jonsin who produced “Just a Dream” and the “Gone” song with me and Kelly [Rowland], also Dr. Luke who produced “Move Your Body” with me, Akon and T-Pain.
ALIVE: In a recent interview you said that “doubt is a fuel” when you’re working on a new project. “Brass Knuckles” had a mixed reception in 2008; were you eager to prove something with “5.0”? Nelly: I think every artist goes into an album thinking you’re going to succeed. But for me, I think it’s rough as an artist just starting out. This album release feels like when I first came out. You’re always gonna have people saying, “He’s not going to do it this time,” or “He’s not going to succeed” or “It’s over,” but I play better from the underdog position. It’s kind of like a double-edged sword in a sense; our first few records were amazing and successful—and I do feel fortunate for that—but damn, now I’m getting compared to myself. ALIVE: It’s been ten years since “Country Grammar” came out, and since then, you’ve earned many awards and success and ventured into other projects. What have you been most proud of? Nelly: Being a parent. Just doing what I’m
30 ALIVE STL NOVEMBER 2010
doing and still having the kind of relationship with my kids. Being busy most of the time, I didn’t want my kids to not know me, but I think that’s what I’m most proud of. I know it’s rough on them because I am who I am and they don’t always get to have their daddy at their every beck and call, but they still have the same love as if I’m there every day. ALIVE: I know that this past summer in St. Louis, you had a temporary gig as host on Hot 104.1. What was that like? Nelly: It was cool—it basically gave me the freedom to have Nelly radio. I filled in for Staci Static while she was on maternity leave. She just
had a baby, so congratulations to her. But I thought it would be something fun to do for the penny. My salary went to charity, my Jes Us 4 Jackie Foundation, to get people signed up in the bone marrow/stem cell registry in honor of my sister who passed away in 2005 from cancer. ALIVE: What a great thing for your foundation and a different venture for you as well. So, as a host, who is a dream interview for you? Nelly: Oh man, I would’ve loved to have gotten Michael Jackson to come in and just do a little [singing] “he he” ” on the show. Just that. That’s all I would have needed and then I’d be like, “I’m done!”

ALIVE: What was the inspiration for “5.0”? Nelly: With the title, if you know anything about a 5.0 [Mustang GT], then you know it’s a classic, it’s got strength, muscle and power. And that’s what I tried to do with this album. The album is a little lighter than probably any other album outside “Suit,” because that album was more melodic, where “Sweat” was a little more traditional rap. Now this album is definitely more melodic, but it definitely has the feel and the vibe of Nelly.

Spinach with ricotta, mozzarella and Parmigiano
A new small South City pizzeria serves up big flavors and savory creative selections. By Cristy Miller | Photos by jennifer silverberg
> I have a friend whose affinity for a good slice of pizza drives him to enjoy it at least five days a week. From pedestrian—albeit not commercial chains or provel-packed pies—to gourmet, he’ll take it. And while I don’t share such strong affection, I do appreciate his uncanny knack for identifying a darn good slice. And, because I always love the challenge of finding him a new interesting pizza joint, I was more than pleased when I introduced him to Pizzeria Tivoli, a new under-theradar restaurant that opened in late July. 32 ALIVE STL NOVEMBER 2010
Perfect Pie What got our attention on the first visit was the warm, earthly aroma emanating from the large, wood-burning brick oven. All pizzas—about a dozen on the menu—are handmade and baked in a 600-degree open flame, and the result is simply sublime: a light, crisp, smoky-flavored crust topped with authentic ingredients like fresh mozzarella, shaved Parmigiano and roasted garlic. We were eager to enjoy offerings like the simple but assertive Margherita, with tomato, mozzarella and fresh basil leaves, and the Bianca, with soft ricotta and Parmigiano. All pizzas are about 12 inches (enough for two people) and are reasonably priced, with the highest priced pizza, the shrimp pesto with sun dried tomatoes and mini shrimp, a mere $13. Of the handful of pies I’ve tried since my first visit, I’ve been satisfied with all, with the exception of the Napoletana; topped with capers and
anchovies, it was a little too salty for my taste. I also didn’t favor the Hadrian with Italian sausage; on more than one occasion the center was doughy and a little undercooked. But the Quattro Stagioni, which also includes anchovies, was a nice departure from the norm, with mushrooms, olives and spicy coppa (Italian ham), which added a lingering kick to each slice. There’s also a nice red pepper and chicken pie and a cheese-laden Quattro Formaggi, topped with a blend of fontina, provolone, mozzarella and Parmigiano—I would have preferred pecorino instead of provolone, but the taste was still delicious. Starters and salad options are sparse, with an antipasto platter and bruschetta. Of the salads, I’d order the Tivoli, with an ample mix fresh greens, feta, artichokes and tomatoes and served with two small slices of pizza bread brushed with olive oil and basil. Pizzeria Tivoli left us both satisfied; him for having found another pizza spot and me for having successfully helped feed his addiction, but hey, what are good friends for?

Hot Eats: Pizzeria Tivoli
Barely a blip on the restaurant radar, Pizzeria Tivoli came to my attention by way of a nearby café server. Located on a residential block at the corner of South Kingshighway and Holly Hills, the restaurant had just opened in an unassuming rehabbed building—I later learned that the owners live upstairs. The space is small, but understatedly charming, with a row of tables along one wall, bar seats and an Italian café-style patio.

Assert Your Independence Pledge your allegiance to Subterranean Books and explore every shelf of this local indie bookseller. By Sheniqua Faulkner | Photos by sarah quatrano
> Bookish types and fashionistas have something very fundamental in common: most members of both camps would rather explore the aisles of an indie store stocked with carefully selected gems than rifle through a big-box gargantuan where the good stuff can sometimes be overshadowed by heaps of the run-of-the-mill. When it comes to treasure of the inkand-paper variety, Subterranean Books offers an impressively well-edited yet diverse selection of independent bookstore bestsellers, lesser-known tomes from small presses, classic lit, children’s titles—the literary gamut. Open since 2000, this Loop treasure trove made its mark as the locally owned source for both new and used books, especially for Wash U. students. Nowadays, the nook only sells new books, but the atmosphere of discovering an unexpected gem still remains; the shelves are filled only with that which Subterranean’s staff of literary curators find cool—much like a great boutique that only sells the clothing its devastatingly stylish employees find fabulous. But unlike some elite fashion boutiques, Subterranean staffers have not a single ounce of pretension. Here, you’re encouraged to ask questions, make recommendations on what the store stocks in the future and pore over each and every shelf until you find something that fits you perfectly (6275 Delmar Blvd., 314.862.6100).

Winter Warm Up Prepping for snow season is as simple as scoring a fab new two-piece uniform. By Jill Manoff | PHOTOS BY carmen troesser
>As each show season introduces new ideas by the droves, knowing which looks are musts can prove hard to decipher. Sure, Chanel’s Yeti look is fun and bust-celebrating silhouettes are having a moment, but when it comes to worth-it investment pieces, one must remember one perennial rule: in winter, it’s all about the coats and the boots. This year, when shopping for your topper and frigidweather-fitting footwear, focus on great lengths; classic tweed and wool outerwear that skims the knee looks new when worn with of-the-moment thigh-high heels. When outdoors, the two will be responsible for representing your style; if, underneath, all you’re wearing are panties and a push-up bra (in the name of fashion’s embracing of femininity and curves, of course—or laundry day…), no one will be the wiser.
When it comes to scoring statem ent boots this seas on, the thigh is the limit; a pair that’s knee pick -high or higher and equipped with bold embellishments .

Ladylike in Lipstick
>For a long time, lipstick got the cold shoulder from most women, the consensus being that lipstick seemed oldfashioned and its execution laborious (Lip liner? Blotting? Constant reapplication? The embarrassment of it creeping onto your teeth? No thanks). This season, fall’s lip look is giving the smooch to fruity glosses and overly lacquered finishes and saying hello a more ladylike approach where lips are enrobed in creamy, nude hues and bold berry shades.
Glosses make way; this season, kissers will don coats of lipstick in shades from strikingly bold to nearly naked.
Imitable beauties Kim Kardashian, Eva Longoria Parker and Jennifer Lopez turn to Motives Cosmetics by Loren Ridinger, a line of customizable cosmetics that offers a generous selection of colors, versatility and high-quality production and packaging. Motives Rich Formula Lipsticks, which are vitamin and mineral packed and highly moisturizing, are available in shades to complement any skin tone. Check out Ridinger’s universally flattering selections handpicked from Motives’ collection.

Perhaps less intimidating than a true red, berry-slicked lips look just as pulled together at the office as they do on the dance floor—and on the catwalk. Dolce & Gabbana and Giorgio Armani sent models down the catwalk with lips in shades from pretty cranberry to bolder blackberry. Pair Motives’ Scarlet shade with warm wash of slightly metallic gold or sand-colored eyeshadow, or forgo the shadow altogether à la the winelipped ladies walking the runway at Lanvin. Remember, when rocking a bolder pout, it’s a good idea to go easier on the rest of your makeup.

Not since the ’90s has brown-toned lipstick been so buzzy. Back then, Drew Barrymore and the cast of “Beverly Hills 90210” wore highly matte, ruddy colors that can look dated if worn today. 2010’s incarnations are luxuriously creamy with a light shine. Motives’ new Café au Lait shade has warm peachy undertones that look great with the season’s rich chocolate and plum eyeshadow shades.

This easy-to-wear Motives shade is perfection for casual days when you’re trying to achieve a more natural look. But don’t stop there—nudes are beautiful when paired with an intense smoky eye, a combo that brings balance to the face by playing up one amazing feature at a time.
{Where to Get It}

Where I Live
A Dream Fulfilled
Center of Everything
Chery, an accountant at Steifel Nicolaus, says her on-the-go lifestyle is perfectly
complemented by The Syndicate’s location in the Old Post Office District. “I love being in the center of everything; I get to walk to work, to the gym, to Busch Stadium—and I love hanging out at the Washington Avenue bars and have a lot of friends who live within a few blocks of me,” she says. “Also, having Culinaria next door is a lifesaver; I’m there probably five times a week.”
Attractive Amenities
At The Syndicate, ultra-modern design aesthetic and cozy, functional living spaces are beautifully combined. Cheryl and her neighbors enjoy hotel-like amenities, including 24-hour fitness facility, art galleries, game room with outdoor terrace, creative workshop area and theater/media room. “I love the courtyard on the 9th floor,”
Cheryl says. “Its perfect for having people over to barbecue and hang out. There is also a rooftop that is great for laying out in the summer.” Each condominium home features open floor plans, gourmet kitchens and large, Chicago-style windows that overlook the St. Louis cityscape. “I would definitely recommend downtown living and The Syndicate,” says Cheryl. “It’s the nicest residential building downtown, the building is secure, the people are so friendly and the location is awesome!”

For the first two years Cheryl Maier lived in St. Louis—a transplant from Chicago—she lived in a loft across the street from the The Syndicate building, which was undergoing a transformation at the time. “I saw all of the construction on the building from day one,” Cheryl says. “And from that day, I have always wanted to live here.” Last summer, Cheryl got her wish when she moved into a rental unit at The Syndicate, and she remained there happily until this past February when she decided to buy a condo on another floor and make The Syndicate her permanent home.
Why busy professional Cheryl Maier chose The Syndicate and luxury living in the heart of one of Downtown’s most vibrant blocks.

Burger Blitz Fall sports are in full swing; gather the gang at your place for an afternoon of noshing, sipping and enjoying the game at home.
When you can’t be at the game, nothing is better than enjoying the action from the comfort of your own living room. Take it to the next level by inviting over friends, preparing some delicious food and enjoying the hard-hitting action in all its HD glory.

Because fans cannot live on handfuls of snacks alone, plan to prepare a more fulfilling meal. Grill up this sports-watching fave with a twist and your guests will be cheering for you come party’s end.
Get your guests pumped up for the action by putting some effort into your décor. We’re not talking about painting your man cave with your team’s color (although that would be sweet); just a few touches that make fans feel festive. To start, instead of plain cups, napkins and plates, score ones emblazoned with your team’s logo (service ware prices vary, available at Party City, 10861 Old Halls Ferry Rd.).

Recently Ringed Three St. Louis couples share their engagement stories.
The Couple: Lauren Murray, 23 & Kyle Murphy, 26 How We Met: Kyle and I met in college at the University of Kansas. We met in 2005, but remained just friends until 2008. We were always running into each other, but Kyle is very shy, and I was stubborn, and we never approached one another. One night, after a few cocktails, my best friend and I went out and we ran into Kyle at a bar. He said “hi” and his friend came up to me and said, “So, you are the girl Murph talks about.” After a few more cocktails, I approached Kyle later and planted a kiss on him that he would never forget. We connected the next day through Facebook and he asked me on a real date. The Proposal: Kyle and I were going to Wisconsin for the weekend for a wedding. We
were supposed to go on Saturday, but Kyle told me he wanted to go earlier to go out with everyone on Friday night. We drove up to Wisconsin Dells, and he said we were going to a hotel where the whole wedding party was staying. It was actually a beautiful bed and breakfast overlooking the Wisconsin Lake. After we unpacked, we walked down to head to the rehearsal dinner after-party, and when we walked out on the balcony, there was a table with dinner, candles, champagne, photos of us and a tiny little box. Kyle got down on one knee and proposed. He hired a violin player to play while we were eating dinner and a professional photographer to snap photos of us during the proposal. It was wonderful! The Big Day: October 22, 2011
The Couple: Melissa Roberts, 21 & Brent Billhartz, 22
The Proposal: I’m a support partner and had to work a shift at the hospital on the evening of August 6. Brent brought me dinner and we ate in the break room. Other nurses had been coming in and out, and I noticed Brent’s face was red and he was really quiet. I went to the bathroom and came back and noticed a folded up piece of paper on the table. In black sharpie it read, “Will you marry me?” I sat down and opened up the paper to see the ring inside the note. I was not expecting it to happen at work! The feeling was so unreal. I immediately called my parents to tell them the wonderful news! The Big Day: August 6, 2011
The Couple: Anna Dwyer, 26 & Brandon Moritz, 27 How We Met: Brandon and I met on the infamous big hill at the Hermann, MO winery during the Fall of our senior year in college in 2005. Although, Brandon attended Saint Louis University and I went to Mizzou, we had many mutual friends. Brandon got the courage to ask me to his Phi Kappa formal that December. I had so much fun that I asked him to come to my Delta Gamma formal that Spring in Columbia, MO. After graduation, we were both living in St. Louis and started officially as a couple at Al Hrabowski’s after a Cardinal’s game on July 3, 2006. The Proposal: It was a typical Sunday. Brandon and I went to church and then were heading to my parents’ house in Chesterfield for what I thought was a birthday brunch for my grandma. When we arrived at my parents’, Brandon asked me to open his trunk. When I did, pink balloons flew out and he was down on one knee. I was so excited that I actually took the ring out of the box myself and put it on my finger after saying “Yes!” All of our close family and friends then ran out my parent’s front door. They had recorded the proposal and greeted us with hugs, champagne, Italian food and cake. It was the best day of my life. The Big Day: May 7, 2011 at the Old Cathedral downtown and reception at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch

How We Met: One of my close girlfriends, who is Brent’s cousin, introduced us on MySpace in 2007. We started sending each other messages, and after one day of messaging, I gave him my number. We later talked for hours on the phone and decided to meet. He played baseball in Mascoutah, so my cousin and I went to a game one night. I was so nervous but excited and my heart was racing the whole time. When the game was over, I invited Brent and some friends to my house afterward and we hung out on the pool deck and started talking about high school (we had just graduated in May). It turned out we’d had a class together junior year of high school! We hung out the entire night and when it was finally time for everyone to go home, we hugged and then he kissed me right then and there. I had butterflies and couldn’t wait to see him again.

>When Sarah Thompson talks about how she met Boyd Pickup, she jokingly says, “we met because Boyd edited my package.” It sounds funny, but the two media professionals met after she began working as a segment producer at HEC-TV, a local TV station that focuses on education, arts and culture, on the show “State of the Arts.” He was immediately taken with Sarah’s sense of humor, intelligence and beauty. “I was very happy when she started working at the station,” Boyd says. “I put on the charm and I knew she would eventually go out with me. And, look at us now: I was right!” The day Boyd proposed, Sarah had had a busy day: client meetings, deadlines and a computer virus. Even though Sarah was stressed and not in the best mood, Boyd insisted they go for a walk and dinner. “I couldn’t figure out why he was so insistent,” says Sarah. “I started getting suspicious, but didn’t really know for sure.” Sarah agreed to go for a walk in Forest Park, where they took strolls frequently. On a beautiful Victorian-era footbridge, Boyd got down on one knee and asked Sarah to marry him. Sarah said “yes” and the two went to Niche for a celebratory dinner. THE CEREMONY: Sarah and Boyd felt it was important that their wedding day be a true reflection of who she and Boyd are at their core. For 54 ALIVE STL NOVEMBER 2010
them, that meant understated elegance mixed with all-out fun (the media-gifted couple even made their own special wedding video that ended with a funny bit about Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” that got big laughs at the reception). Graham Chapel on the Washington University campus was the backdrop for the July ceremony. The architecturally stunning space needed little embellishment beyond the dramatic curly willow, yellow roses and mums from Odelia Floral. After Sarah and Boyd exchanged the vows they had written for one another, teary and overjoyed guests cheered when the two were officially announced as husband and wife. THE GOWN: After learning about Seattle-based designer Chrissy Wai-Ching while reading an article online, Sarah was drawn to Wai Ching’s nontraditional approach to wedding gowns, which are created with organic silks and hand dyed. “When I saw the Athena dress, it was so reflective of me,” says Sarah. “I emailed her and we started a conversation on customizing a dress.” The gown, a pleated silk chiffon, featured rich turquoise sashes that tied in the back and draped to the floor. THE SWEETS: After completing a segment for STL-TV featuring Reine Bayoc, owner of SweetArt Bakeshop and Studio (sweetartstl.com,
314.771.4278), Sarah fell in love with the bakery’s delicious cupcakes. For Sarah and Boyd’s reception, SweetArt created a cupcake tree filled with an assortment of flavors and topped off the tower with a small cake. THE CELEBRATION: The courtyard of Washington University’s Charles S. Knight Center proved to be the perfect reception site. During the cocktail hour, guests enjoyed passed hors d’oeuvres of smoked salmon wraps, asparagus and bruschetta while grooving to music from jazz trio, The Usual Suspects. Forgoing the traditional seated dinner or buffet, the couple chose food stations, which were set up around the courtyard and dining room, allowed guests to mingle freely. The menu offerings included salad, pasta, seafood and carving stations. While working on another project, Sarah met legendary St. Louis Blues musician Big George Brock and decided she wanted him to perform at the reception. He arrived ready to play decked out in a turquoise suit that matched Sarah’s dress. “People had a great time, we had a great time, and we felt like we really succeeded in staying true to who we are,” says Sarah. “The hard work and late nights we spent planning truly paid off.”

Get Involved: Harvest from the Heart This month, give thanks by giving back to these local hunger relief charities. BY SHENIQUA FAULKNER
St. Louis Area Foodbank
St. Louis Area Foodbank
For 35 years, the Foodbank has helped thousands in the bi-state region. In fact, an estimated 57,100 people rely upon the St. Louis Area Foodbank for food assistance each week. During the holidays—and of course, everyday—the Foodbank relies on the help of volunteers. Hold a food drive at your home and encourage Thanksgiving guests to bring non-perishable food items to dinner in addition to their famous green bean casserole, or organize a drive in your workplace. Help is also needed in the Foodbank’s repackaging center, where each year, millions of pounds of food are donated through community food drives, local and national food manufacturers and the United States Department of Agriculture (stlfoodbank.org).

St. Patrick Center
Operation Food Search
As the largest provider of homeless services in Missouri, St. Patrick Center serves more than 9,000 people annually who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless and helps provide them with opportunities for self-sufficiency. This year, help the Center with their annual “Give Thanks: A Feast for Every Family” event, which assists more than 400 St. Patrick Center clients and their families. Clients receive grocery items, a gift certificate to purchase a turkey at any area Schnucks store and the opportunity to select a gently used winter coat. The center seeks donations for non-perishable food items, shopping bags and winter coats as well as volunteers to help sort and package the items and distribute to clients (stpatrickcenter.org).
A leader in collecting and distributing food throughout Missouri and Illinois, Operation Food Search also offers comprehensive nutrition education programs and environmentally friendly initiatives. OFS welcomes volunteers to help in their warehouse and to distribute food to local agencies, but you can also help the organization through their annual Empty Bowls event at Plaza Frontenac this month from November 19-21. Throughout the year, OFS receives dozens of donated art pieces representing empty bowls—reminders that many in our community are faced with hunger everyday. These works, which are constructed of materials ranging from clay to paper maché, are offered to the public with a suggested donation value. Each donation is tax-deductible, and for every dollar donated, Operation Food Search is able to distribute $17 worth of food (operationfoodsearch.org).

MICHAEL D. MAKES IT WORK
On-the-brink and uncensored, the “Project Runway” alum gets real about success and the St. Louis runway that launched his career. By JILL MANOFF Photography by WESLEY LAW Art Direction by David Hsia Makeup & Hair by Mary Ann Saitta, 314.220.8280, skincare24.net Model: Gabrielle Kniery for Centro Models, centromodels.com
I know my being in this contest is a long shot, by all means, but I like to think that miracles happen.” Sent from his Gmail account, the included sentence pretty much summed up the uncertain sentiment of Michael Drummond’s first correspondence with me. It was February of last year, and as Saint Louis Fashion Week’s Fashion Director, I had just started to reach out to the designer hopefuls deemed likely to make it to the “finalists” round of the event’s Spring 2009 Project:Design! Competition. A month and a half later, Drummond took the prize and, less than a year and a half after that, he was jetting off to join the elite group of designers chosen to compete on Season 8 of “Project Runway.” Of the reported 15,000 applicants, only 17 made the cut. Having previously earned his supper strictly in the realm of knitwear, “Michael D.” (his handle on the show, thanks to the casting of Californian Michael Costello) was an unlikely contender for Bunim/Murray Productions’ multi-million-dollar contract-of-secrecy, to say the least. In a statement made on air during the season premiere, he compared the leap to all-design-encompassing “Project Runway” to “playing the harpsichord your whole life, then going into electric guitar.” Being neither one of those superfans you hear about waiting overnight in the elements for the chance at starring on reality TV, nor a pop-fashion nut drinking his morning coffee (which he was sipping from a “Real Men Like Cats” mug on the day of our interview) while flipping through the latest issue of “Harper’s Bazaar,” it seems the fashion industry sought him out. He long avoided glossies—before being ordered by Tim Gunn and “Marie Claire”’s Zanna Roberts to change his ways during the filming of Episode 2; now shelves in his Art Lofts space are occupied by everything from mainstream “Vogue” to “Pigeons & Peacocks” out of London. “I do like them as reference,” he admitted. What’s more, it took the show’s producers two seasons to convince him to even audition, upon discovering his work by way of online Saint Louis Fashion Week coverage. Convinced the show was “smart and respectable,” he finally agreed and braced himself. “I knew what to expect,” he claimed, thanks to his experiences post-Project:Design!: “My world had flipped on itself. I went from an underground designer nobody knew to this local celebrity. I went through a whole year of, like, ‘WTF?’” “In [competing in] ‘Project Runway,’ I knew people would start to treat me differently. I thank God for Project:Design! Had that not happened, I would be a crazy person right now.” Understandable. Joining him for an afternoon shopping trip to Plaza Frontenac to scout wardrobe for his cover shoot proved an event, thanks to multiple fans spurring conversations and a tea sample-offering worker frantically waving from across the corridor, “Hi, Michael! I loved you on ‘Project Runway’!” His elimination episode airing just days before our meet-up, Drummond, who was among the last nine standing, was able to openly discuss the design that sent him packing: a gather-pleated skirt Tim Gunn adamantly advised against showing, which was intended to be fitting sportswear for a modern-day Jackie Kennedy. Though torn apart by the judges, Drummond defends his design to this day. “I have no regrets,” he said. “If they were going to send me home, they were going to send me home for something I believed in.” ••• A St. Louis native, Drummond’s preparation for the fashion designfocused competition started at a very young age. “Coming home from Catholic school, I used to cut through people’s yards to get home faster. One woman had fabulous flowers in her yard and I would play with them like they were dresses—like a little queen! Plus, my sister had Barbies, so it was inevitable that I would play with Barbies, and I started making dresses for them out of everything I could get my hands on.” A young 31, Drummond’s life experiences are considerably vast and have clearly molded his current stand-up character. He recalled having “fucked up a good few years” in San Francisco, where he had moved to
attend the Academy of Art University; he now calls the stay “a bust” thanks to his getting caught up in the drugs and party scene. “Thankfully, I got that out of my system.” Before that, he lived alone in a cabin in the middle Washington State for four months, with the original goal of working on a book of knitwear patterns proposed to him based on his standout work while at Lindenwood University. When his knitting machine broke in shipping, he schlepped his plans (which he now calls “the only regret I’ve ever had in my life”), yet decided to stay and spent his days sitting, thinking and chopping firewood. “I had chickens!” he laughed. “It was amazing. I would do it again in a second.” His valuing of that time, it seems, now contributes to his levelheadedness. “It’s important for me to be able to go on a walk, and be quiet and still see the world from a calm, introspective viewpoint. If I get caught up in the fame stuff, I won’t hear that voice anymore. I don’t want to screw with that special gift.” Far from the stereotypical television star, Drummond is no diva. He supplements his passion with gigs as a commercial stylist; a freelance designer for the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, for which he creates custom pieces for various productions, and a knitwear designer and patternmaker for The Hill-based Skif, a longstanding fashion house spearheaded by Nina Ganci, who is his inspiration for staying in town. “I don’t have any real plans to move from St. Louis. I think a lot about the fact that if Nina can do it, I can probably do it, too.” But lack of funds are making it hard. “St. Louis is famous for rooting for their own. I like it when people are supportive. I like it more when people buy things.” Just weeks after returning home from showing his ten-piece collection at New York Fashion Week, an opportunity granted to “Project Runway’s” three finalists and a handful of decoys (one of which was Drummond; as the episode was to air weeks after filming, he was still in contention on September 9, as far as viewers knew), he was simultaneously recuperating from a weeks-long sickness (likely the result of either stress or exhaustion) and plotting. “I want to strike while the iron’s hot. I need investors, an accountant, a business manager, someone I can trust to take it to the next level. All of the stars are aligned; it’s just a matter of doing it.” He credits a number of competitors from the show’s previous seasons with having “done it right” in his book, including Santino Rice, Nick Verreos, Chloe Dao and “obviously, Christian Siriano,” the Season 4 winner who, on top of designing a successful ready-to-wear collection, has signed deals with such major corporations as Payless ShoeSource. Confirming rumors circulating around the blogosphere that the judges this season were “extra bitchy,” he recalled a time when he wanted to throw in the towel. “Some days, we were getting up at three after going to bed at two. We had no music, no books, no time to talk when the cameras weren’t rolling. At the same time, I was disagreeing with what the judges were calling “winning” looks; it was unfair, and I was watching people I had come to care about fall apart in the heat of the competition. I remember thinking, ‘I don‘t want to do this anymore.’” Still, he carried on, and amidst his own light at the end of the tunnel, at the time of our interview, he was clearly excited about a few alreadyin-the-works projects he was not at liberty to discuss. Even so, based on my eavesdropping on a phone conversation, I was able to conclude that
he is in discussions with fellow contestant Christopher Collins about selling some of his things in his San Francisco store. In addition, I retrieved that he was going to town on a dress for Heidi Klum, who had personally asked him to outfit her, and was about to hop on a plane to film a commercial with Ivy Higa—with whom he insists he has a stellar relationship, despite Episode 7. To recap, a competition that paired the two left him defending his side of their opposing “jargon” (“She went to Parsons; I’m self-taught.”) and her justifying a design on the grounds that it was “edited”-slash-dumbed-down for Michael who “doesn’t know how to execute a pant.” He debuted two stellar takes on the style during his New York Fashion Week Show at Lincoln Center, under great pressure. “It was the most nervous I had ever been. It’s the most important Fashion Week in these three [American] continents, and almost the world!” But, following his colleagues’ approval, his nerves subsided. “All the contestants who were showing at Fashion Week were like, ‘I would totally wear this stuff.’ Casanova was in love, he was like, ‘I wanna come to St. Louis to learn how to do this;’ Christopher Collins really liked it; April loved it; Ivy loved it; Gretchen said she thought it was genius.” And Tim Gunn shared the sentiment. “He said, ‘I’m a thousand times behind this. I think it’s interesting; I think it’s really, really sellable; it’s really beautiful.’ He was really impressed.” Mirroring the uncertainty evident prior to his competing in Project:Design!, Drummond confessed that it wasn’t until receiving Gunn’s stamp backstage that his attitude flipped. “Prior, I was like, ‘I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing.’ I think I know what I’m doing, but then I inevitably wonder, ‘Is this really good, or is this just pure crap?’” Today, as he looks forward to a new season, he threads a different needle. “I feel really reborn,” he confided. “I’m more excited, I’m more confident, there is a really big spring in my step. It’s not that I’ve changed, I’m just more proud of myself.” Michael Drummond photographed in his live/work studio in downtown St. Louis. R Clotheshorses? More like stallions, and more esteemed for their all-encompassing styles rather than simply their killer wardrobes. Still, they just play on an elevated sartorial plane. They take risks. They not only know their neck size and the name of a great tailor, they’re prone to making informed references to such industry icons as Tom Ford and Cary Grant. They openly profess their loves for Prada footwear and manscapingthat-borders-on-pampering, and drop lines
like “less is more.” They’re not so much a rare breed as they are MVPs in a league that’s “too grown-up” to wear sports jerseys. They are the 2010 Men of Style, and they’re dandy representatives of our cosmopolitan city. Call them metro, if you will.

Grandma knows best: “My grandmother was a seamstress and instilled in me an eye for tailored clothing and proper fit. She’s always critiquing what I’m wearing, and she’ll tell me if I’m working out too much.” Organized living: “My closet is very organized. I think, when it’s not, most people tend to forget what they have and start wearing the same thing. This way, I get to be creative.” Style motto: “You never know who you’re going to run into.” On “the God of Sex”: “I like masculine dressing. I think Tom Ford does that in a sexy, not vulgar, way. It’s okay to show a little chest hair!” Dress for success: “Always look your best; if you took the time to look put-together, you’ll take the time to do your job well.” Power suiting: “On a big day, it’s a navy suit with side vents; a well-pressed white shirt; slim, light-brown shoes and a matching belt—and always a handkerchief.” Essential elements: “Balance of mind, body and spirit are important. For me, that includes regular exercise, yoga, meditation, a healthy diet, a good night’s sleep and an occasional visit to the spa for some pampering. I'm not someone you have to convince to relax!” Everyday Jay: “I would definitely say I’m a jeans guy; I like to be comfortable.” Q Calvin Klein blazer, pants and shirt; Ray-Ban sunglasses and Gucci tote available at Saks Fifth Avenue, Plaza Frontenac, 314.567.9200

26, Fashion Designer, “Project Runway” Season 8 Alum Out of the closet: “I was not fashionable in high school; I looked like I stepped out of TJ Maxx. My own style didn’t come out until I started going to gay bars; I figured, if I’m going to date, I better step up my game.” Prized possessions: “My three must-haves are my collection of skinny ties that dress up any outfit, a ridiculous gold jacket from American Apparel and my John Galliano button-up. It’s the most expensive thing I own, and it fits perfectly.” On regrets: “There was a period when I wore lots and lots of neon; everything! I make a lot of mistakes. When you’re someone who takes risks, it’s gonna happen.” Celebrity muse: “If I could design for anyone, it would be Cyndi Lauper in the ’80s when she was totally hot.” The Gaga Effect: [Lady] Gaga is making it tough for designers; it’s getting harder and harder to be original.” Style, defined: “Style is not what you choose to wear, but how you choose to wear it.” R Versace jacket, pants and shirt available at Saks Fifth Avenue, Plaza Frontenac, 314.567.9200

On the fall of Ed Hardy: “I used to wear a lot of Ed Hardy tees, then Jon Gosselin came along. One guy ruins everything. I still wear them, though–to the gym.” Fop worth copping: “George Clooney. He doesn’t try too hard, and he doesn’t try to be anyone else. He’s like a modern-day Cary Grant.” Family tradition: “My dad wore a three-piece suit to work every day, so I knew I wanted a job that would require my wearing a suit. Now my son has decided he wants to wear a suit every day to work like I do.” On-air dress code: “Fashion and style are very important to the job; people are going to listen to you more if you look good.” Opposites attract: “[My wife’s] not the type of person who will go out and spend $500 on something; she’s practical. Me? I’m overthe-top.” On designer ties: “Cigars and watches are the only things I spend money on. $100 on a strip of silk? I don’t think so.” On adult dress: “I used to wear sports jerseys; I think I grew up. Oh, and I’m 46-years-old; we don’t pop the collar.” Q Andrew Marc overcoat and Hugo Boss pants, shirt, tie, belt and shoes available at Saks Fifth Avenue, Plaza Frontenac, 314.567.9200

On classics: “I like pieces that will stand the test of time. My favorite piece is a Ferragamo chocolate brown vest; it will last forever, will never go out of style and can be worn in a variety of settings.” Signature style: “Well-fitting clothes are my signature. My favorite brands are John Varvatos, Prada and Theory; they fit perfectly off the rack.” Seal of approval: “I shop for myself, but I won’t take the tags off until my wife sees it.” Changing the rules: “I used to have a rule: no jeans; they’re too casual. Now jeans are my favorite thing to wear.” Choice extra: “I have one good watch: a Cartier Roadster that has a silver, a black and a brown band and can look casual or dressy. I like it so much, I lost it and bought the same one again.” On getting noticed: “I used to go for more color to stand out. Then I realized less is more.” R Calvin Klein shirt and pants, Gucci belt and Hugo Boss shoes available at Saks Fifth Avenue, Plaza Frontenac, 314.567.9200

Good luck charm: “The gold [double-C] ring I won at the U.S. Chess Championship is my lucky charm. It’s a reminder to keep pushing forward, to keep trying.” On dressing up: “If I’m competing against a great player, I’ll dress up out of respect. If I’m wearing jeans, I don’t respect you.” Rebel yell: “I dyed my hair red about four years ago; I wanted to do something different. I thought it was interesting. Let‘s just say it didn’t quite work.” On influences: “I grew up in New York City, and spent a lot of time in the Soho area. Now, I’m traveling a lot to Europe. I’ve always followed the trends I see out and about.” Real men wear pink: “My style is a bit wild. I’ll wear pink shirts; I have a pink polo that I’ll wear with jeans–skinny jeans, if I’m in the mood.” Band mates: “My two favorites are Green Day and Metallica.” Q Hugo Boss blazer; Polo Ralph Lauren jeans; Saks Fifth Avenue sweater vest, shirt and tie available at Saks Fifth Avenue, Plaza Frontenac, 314.567.9200. The New All-American If you a dmit to watching “Gossip Girl,” think “WASP” à la Chuck Bass. Otherwise, your own high school will likely suffice as a reference point for the latest incarnation of must-have preppy; smart and traditional, the trend is best described as polo player-meets-valedictorian—but, thankfully, is splashed with Americana instead of school-specific shades. Black and gold were never your colors.

Lucky for you, designers are feeling the nostalgia associated with leather, motorcycles and “boys will be boys”— recently revealing plenty of urbanized takes on your choice bomber and blues. HOUSE OF SAVOY HotelumiÈre 901 N. First St. 314.881.7830 lumiereplace.com
House of Savoy offers authentic Italian cuisine so good it rivals the flavors and ingredients found in Tuscany. Located in HoteLumière, House of Savoy opened in 2008 and instantly became an excellent option for both hotel guests and St. Louisans looking for a savory, home-cooked Italian meal. The Menu The newly revamped menu, under new Executive Chef Paola Bugli, features delectable pastas, seafood and grilled meats. When you think of Italian, fresh pasta immediately comes to mind—and at House of Savoy, perfectly prepared pasta makes appearances in dishes like the wild mushroom stuffed ravioli, served with melted butter and sage and the equally delicious Linguine Pescatore with tender linguine, shrimp, mussels, clams, scallops and your choice of spicy tomato broth or garlic white wine herb broth. Risotto, penne and spaghetti also make for fine options and embody traditional Tuscan flavors. Healthy & Delicious At House of Savoy, the focus is on ingredients, using the best Extra Virgin Olive Oil, seasonal ingredients and fresh spices and herbs. So your meal tastes wonderful but is also healthy and well-balanced. True Italian is more than just pasta—the cuisine features delicate meats, flatbreads and seafood. House of Savoy’s menu features items like Scaloppines, a very popular Italian dish with lightly breaded, pan-seared veal, and the Pollo Parmigiana with juicy chicken breast, mozzarella and marinara sauce. There’s also a well-rounded selection of prime choice dry-aged meats, grilled to perfection and served with grilled asparagus and baked tomato. If seafood is more your style, then you’ll love the Zuppa di Pesce, a delicious seafood stew with a slightly spicy tomato broth, mussels, clams, shrimp, scallops and calamari, and served with roasted garlic bread. A great Italian meal absolutely must end with desser t—and thankfully House of Savoy has several that will satisfy like ricotta pie, crème brulee and a sinful chocolate tar te.

How to make sure I don’t let anything slip past in any moment. What is your personal motto? Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. In another life, you’d be: I think we only get one shot. What is your current obsession? Electronics.
