History in the Making

Living in an age of omnipresent images has given us the ability to

feel a sense of nostalgia for eras we have never experienced. Through movies, television and photography, we’ve developed emotional connections with decades past. This month’s fashion editorial transports us to an era that’s as familiar to us as if we’d lived it ourselves, remembered through imprints of history captured on cellulose—Casablanca, The Philadelphia Story, the famous “Kiss by the Hotel de Ville” photo by Robert Doisneau and the iconic “VJ Day Kiss” photo of an American sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square in 1945. Escape into your dreams and live your fantasies as you dress this spring; become a heroine in hats, red lipstick and polished suiting.

In February’s Buzz List Issue, Tuan Lee captured images of St. Louisans that will live on in history. We had the honor of celebrating with all featured at the Buzz List Launch Event at Lucas Park Grille. Friends from Mercedes-Benz of Progress Point, Brown Shoe, Studio Branca, Salon Branca, Salon Professional Academy, Weinhardt Party Rentals and Gebbs Total Video joined us to mingle with the city’s elite and sip Sam Adams and Absolut Mango drinks. We wouldn’t have had the opportunity to deliver the striking portraits of so many St. Louisans to our readers without the generous support of our clients, advertisers and partners. On February 18, we toasted Pearl Vodka cocktails to them at Black Label, where ALIVE VIPs including Dennis Duncan, Ola Hawatmeh, Steve Buesching and Vito and Michele Racanelli networked and enjoyed Gregory’s Catering.

letter from the editor project design This month, we celebrate ALIVE’s sixth birthday. I’ve always

thought of birthdays not only as a time to celebrate who you are and what you’ve accomplished, but as a perfect opportunity to re-evaluate your goals. Over the last few months, the ALIVE team has done just that. We spent time celebrating our devoted readership, wonderfully supportive advertisers and the amazing team of entrepreneurial, dedicated and talented people we get to work with every day. We also spent time looking to the future, and we couldn’t be more thrilled about the direction we’re heading. We hope that excitement shows in the magazine you’re holding—a redesigned ALIVE that better reflects the evolution of our city, our readers and our goals. Redesigning a magazine is much like building a new home and then moving into it. It’s a process that involves defining your foundation (bringing readers more relevant, relatable stories), creating a blueprint (after scores of creative sessions), determining what to keep and what to toss (more on this in a minute…), and finally, bringing it all together before moving day arrives (kudos to Art Director Reshma Chamberlin, who put countless hours into the conception and execution of the redesign).

That said, the choice to launch our new look this month was anything but arbitrary. Besides being a birthday gift to ourselves, our redesign coincides with our annual Home & Design Issue. This month’s feature story “Ready, Set, Renovate!” (p.58) aims to help homeowners and all DIY’ers by giving them ideas and resources for sprucing up their living spaces, whether it’s finally putting in that backyard patio or giving Mom’s antique furniture a makeover.

We’re also debuting two new regular features: Weddings (p.40), a monthly story covering the nuptials of a St. Louis couple, and Hot Block (p.34), a page dedicated to a buzzy local neighborhood. And with design so top of mind, we caught up with this month’s cover guy, fashion designer and “Project Runway” runner-up Jerell Scott (p.56), who comes to St. Louis this month to judge Project: Design! at Saint Louis Fashion Week.

Jennifer Dulin Wiley vividly remembers the serious time and organization it took to plan a wedding. So when she interviewed Susan Hindupur about her twoday, double-ceremony Indian wedding extravaganza, she was totally impressed. Jennifer talked planning, expectations and culture infusion with Susan and fellow bride Lindsey Terry, who pulled off a combination Jewish-Catholic ceremony in style. Jennifer is the managing editor of Art Business News, a national fine-art magazine, and a regular contributor for ALIVE.

According to ALIVE fashion photographer Steve Garnett, “A photographer’s job is to tell a story with a lens—a story that takes on new definitions depending which eyes are trying to decipher meaning. I think this gray area is what makes it art.”

Contributing Editor Natalie Kurz is no stranger to home renovations. As a newly anointed real estate investor (having purchased a four-family rental property last year), it was fun to share some of the latest trends and tips for home renovations in this month’s feature (p.58)—many of which she’s tried during kitchen and bathroom renovations in her own home. A few things she’s learned: there’s no such thing as too much closet space and pullout pantry cabinets make it hard to hide candy from toddlers.

A first-time contributor to ALIVE, L.A.-based fashion photographer Michael Dar welcomed the opportunity to once again photograph good friend and top designer Jerell Scott for the April issue. Michael said it was apparent from their first meeting seven years ago that Jerell “was not only a model; he was designer.” Michael’s passion for photography continues to mold the models of today into the supermodels of tomorrow. The folks at 609 Restaurant & Lounge in The Loop also noticed, and recently rolled out a new restaurant more fitting with the times, Blue Ocean Sushi. The concept: high-quality, all-you-can-eat sushi, at low price points. The new spot is located in the old 609 restaurant space, and while it’s under the same ownership—and roof—Blue Ocean Sushi is an entirely new restaurant and dining experience. The menu offers three price levels, ranging from $14.99 to $24.99 for lunch and $19.99 to $29.99 for dinner, and includes a selection of salads, soups and rolls to choose from. Popular rolls include the spicy salmon roll, cucumber roll and spider roll with soft-shell crab. Adjacent to the restaurant, the 609 Lounge remains a hotspot for hipsters and Loop-goers, offering a mix of DJs, drink specials and dancing in a sexy setting. With a rotating line-up of DJs, you can hear anything from house to hip-hop to Top 40. Saketinis are a hit here, like the Blue Ocean Saketini, made with sake, Absolut and Blue Cuaraco. 609 also features drink specials through the week on beer, and on Saturday, patrons can enjoy $100 Absolut bottle service all night. Absolut Mango Mojito 4 parts Absolut Mango 2 parts simple syrup 2 parts lime juice 1 splash sugar, superfine soda water mint leaf mango slice Fill a chilled highball glass with crushed ice. Add Absolut Mango, lime juice, simple syrup and sugar. Top up with soda water. Garnish with 1 slice mango and 1 leaf mint leaf.

nowserving DOWNTOWN NEWS Downtown dwellers have had a healthy dose of good news lately. Construction began in February on the new Culinaria-A Schnucks Market at 9th and Olive, slated to open this summer. We’re also excited to see the “Re-Opening Soon” sign outside Copia and look forward to the debut of the 12th Street Diner this spring.

Trade in your so-so Cosmo for a new signature drink for summer. Ask your bartender to mix you one of these Mango cocktails (or create them at home) and pack your passport for your trip to paradise.

By Jill Manoff | Photo by Charles Bush With a career that spans more than twenty years, actress, writer, producer and designer Jane Seymour opens up about life’s ups and downs, becoming a comedian and sharing her personal artwork with St. Louis this month.

jill manoff: Tell me about your artwork. Jane seymour: Whereas some artists do a lot

of the same thing, I do a variety of artwork. Sometimes people come to my shows and they ask which pieces are mine; when they’re told it’s all my work, they’re in shock. At the Wentworth Gallery, there will be everything from classic watercolors to vibrant oil paintings—very impressionist pieces, then I have a series of single flowers that some compare to Georgia O’Keeffe’s work, some landscapes and then—of course—the whole Open Hearts collection, which is inspired by my jewelry. JM: What inspires your paintings? JS: I started painting 18 years ago when I was

going through a terrible crisis in my life. I had lost all of my homes, my money, my marriage, everything. I was beyond bankrupt and sued by every major bank and the FDIC; it was about as bad as it gets—so that’s why I really understand what people are going through right now. My mother always told me to go out and do something to help somebody else when life seems insurmountable. I was at a fundraiser for a child abuse charity I worked with called Child Help; there was a silent auction that I bid on for an artist to come to my home and do a drawing of my children. He saw the finger paintings that I’d done with my kids and thought they were very good; he offered to give me a couple of free lessons—so that’s how I started. It became a healing for me. I really process a lot of feelings through my art. So, that’s why my art is so personal. JM: How did your jewelry collection come about? JS: I was going through a really tough time about a year-and-a-half ago when my mom was very sick. I decided to make myself a single diamond pendant to wear just to remind myself to keep my heart open, as that was always my mom’s advice to me. I was just randomly wearing it one night at a dinner and two of the people at my table were very curious about my necklace. It turned out they were with Kay Jewelers. The Open Hearts design actually came from a sketch I did on the back of a napkin in a fast food restaurant! I am always thinking up new concepts and ideas; I usually carry a sketchbook.

JM: I know you also have a book titled Open Hearts. JS: It has a lot of my artwork in it and it also has writings—by me, by people I met on the Internet who told me their inspirational stories, by friends; it includes pieces by Shakespeare; Martin Luther King, Jr.; Kennedy; the Pope; Mother Teresa; Rudyard Kipling; Eckhart Tolle—different people talking about what it means to live life with an open heart. JM: What has been your favorite acting role? JS: Dr. Quinn basically saved my life. I had

declared bankruptcy and I told the networks that I was willing to do anything out there; I am

fully ready and available. The “anything” that turned up was this little movie called “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.” They decided to make it into a series and signed me on for five years. It surprised everyone and lasted for seven years, and is still is shown in 98 countries around the world. JM: What was it like on the set of Wedding Crashers? JS: Hysterical. Vince Vaughn is really funny; Isla Fisher is hysterical; it was a wonderful experience and I’ve done a lot of comedy since then. In fact, now I’m mostly known for comedy. It’s like I have a whole new career now—it was Jane Seymour, the actress; now it’s Jane Seymour, the comedian. JM: Tell me about your experience on “Dancing with the Stars” (Season 4)? JS: It was one of those extraordinary experiences in my life that I will never forget. I remember how hard it was to do. I was beyond sore; I mean—nails falling off, blood everywhere, pulled muscles. I had to have injections in my ribcage because my ribs were so badly strained, all while going to therapy three times a week for back issues I had before the show started. But I loved it. JM: It seems like you never age; what’s your best beauty secret? JS: Jane Seymour Natural Advantage; I use it all the time. I have an alpha hydroxy for day and I use a retinol cream at night—and it works. That’s all I use; I use it every day and it makes a huge difference. I don’t do Botox, I don’t do facelifts, I don’t do dermabrasions or laser peels or any of that stuff. I don’t even have facials!

By Jill Manoff photograph by Michael Dar Best known as the third runner-up on “Project Runway”’s Season 5, Jerell Scott is already a success in the world of fashion design. Showing a collection at New York Fashion Week, opening his own boutique (Jane Doe John Doe in the heart of Los Angeles) and remaining a likable favorite for his duration on a fashion-based reality show are just a few of the fabulous accomplishments he can report on his résumé. In addition, he can soon add Project: Design! judge. No stranger to design competitions, the tables will turn at Saint Louis Fashion Week on March 25 when Jerell will send five hopeful contestants back to their drawing boards until next season. But, known as the lighthearted contestant who provided assistance to his opponents, we’re betting his words of dismissal will be much more consoling than “Auf Wiedersehen!”

Jill Manoff: What’s your first memory of

fashion?

Jerell Scott: It’s actually kind of a funny

story. I was like six years old, and I was playing with my sister and her dolls and we were playing awards show. I was looking at the doll’s dress and thinking, “Oh my gosh, this needs to be fancier,” so I got one of my dad’s tube socks and I cut the bottom off to make a dress with a train. That was the first kind of fashion-y thing I ever did.

JM: Have you always been so fashionable? JS: I think I was always really an individual. I

always did my own thing. At any time in my life, had you asked, I probably would have described myself as being very fashionable, but in retrospect, there were some questionable things. I think when you take risks in fashion and you dare to be different, you’re bound to stumble at times. I remember this whole bleached corduroy phase; very questionable.

JM: What designers inspire you?

JS: I’m a huge fan of very opulent, ornate stuff, which you can probably tell from my work. So I really love Alexander McQueen, Karl Lagerfeld, Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood…people who aren’t afraid to really push it and do something different; who like the more opulent, the more regal; who are good at making unexpected things that look expensive. I’m into the show of it all, you know? The fantasy of it.

JM: Do you look to clothes for expression? JS: I have a lot to say, and I definitely see de-

JM: What sort of fashion design training did you have? JS: I’m self-taught. I’ve always been a very creative person. I’m very good at visual things—I can do interior design, I’ve done landscaping, I’ve done set design, hair, makeup, all sorts of stuff like that. But I used to model, and that was what actually led me to this career. I was living in New York and getting opportunities to go to all of these really great parties, but a brother did not have the money to go and spend on the cool clothes—so I had to teach myself how to work them out.

JM: Describe your experience on “Project Runway.” JS: It was the absolute most fun and hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. It was really difficult because there is no time for self-doubt. Plus, you’re competing; you’re constantly being filmed; you know the world is going to see your every move, so there’s that pressure—at one point, while working on my collection, I was like, “Damn! Anna Wintour’s going to see this!” We slept between four and six hours a night; the longest work day we had was 36 hours. The further you go in the competition, the more sleep deprived

I feel really privileged to have found what my passion is so early in life, because I think so many people go through life just doing what they have to do and they never really get a chance to explore what it is that really makes them happy.

you become. It’s extremely demanding, and people don’t really get that when they just watch the show because they’re getting it in their one-hour, bite-size pieces. It’s so easy to sit at home and question or criticize, but—all I can say is—when you’re in it, it’s ridiculous. Nobody works like that in real life. Then again, when given the opportunity, you better rise to the occasion, or get out of the way. JM: Were you heartbroken that you didn’t make it to the top three? JS: First off, it’s a show. People say I was cheated or whatever, but I don’t really look at it that way. I loved my wedding dress [Jerell was eliminated after the Wedding Dress Challenge] and, if it wasn’t to the liking of the judges, what can I really do? I think, for all of us on the show, it got to the point where we just wanted to be true to who we were. You can’t compromise yourself to appease anybody. If it’s not a true representation of who you are, there’s really no worth in it. Each week that I stayed on meant that I had more time to show the world what I can do.

JM: Are you still friends with the other contestants? JS: Yes! I just opened a store here in Los Angeles called Jane Doe John Doe; I really wanted a place that would bridge the gap between the designers, who have no marketing experience, and the consumer. I carry my line, I’ve got Korto’s line, I’ve got Leanne’s line, I’ve got Stella’s line, I’ve got Emily’s line, plus there’s a host of new designers that have yet to be discovered by the world. JM: So you’ve been busy since the show? JS: It’s been crazy! I feel so blessed and privi-

leged to have been given this opportunity. I just want to use it. I’m really excited to be showing at Saint Louis Fashion Week because it’s given me great reason to create some extraordinary clothes. I am all about the drama of it all, which you will see when I deliver my delicious collection. I’m going to kill it! JM: Where do you see your line in five years? JS: My ultimate plan is global domination. What

I love is to create gorgeous, opulent, museumquality garments. That’s what I’m about. I’m not as much into the ready-to-wear, but in the next 5 years, it would be good to have kind of a lower-end line because, honestly, that’s where the money is. But what’s important is that I’m still doing what I love and that I’m happy. JM: As judge of Saint Louis Fashion Week’s Bakers Project: Design! competition, do you have any advice for the contestants? JS: Just express who you are as a designer. I am all about the individual, and you can tell when someone is trying to do what someone else has done. We are all inspired by other people, but I personally do not want to see blatant knockoffs of other people’s work. Just be original and have fun—and may the best designer win! While always the top choice for homeowners, wood floors are seeing a trend toward wider, more distressed planks and exotic woods like Brazilian cherry, mahogany, teak and walnut, as opposed to plain maple or oak. And if you can’t decide, that’s okay too—mixing woods from room to room or by creating borders is also increasingly popular. For those looking to shake things up a bit, there’s been a big surge in large ceramic tile (especially in bathrooms), stained concrete (great for the loft look), travertine (adds instant elegance) and green flooring options like cork and bamboo.

Take any room from bland to bold by just adding some inviting fabric to windows, floors and furniture. A priest standing under a chuppah or a rabbi reciting the Lord’s Prayer are hardly the sights of a conventional ceremony, but they were the very events that made Lindsey and Jack Terry’s wedding truly their own. Intent on creating a stunning multi-denominational affair and with the help of Cosmopolitan Events, the couple performed such Jewish rituals as the signing of the Ketuveh and the breaking of the glass directly alongside the Christian rites of exchanging vows and rings. Holding the ceremony and reception at a single site (The Rialto Ballroom) helped them achieve a second important union—an elegant fusion of modern and romantic tastes. Guests of the June 7 affair entered the space to find a stunning antique crystal chandelier (brought in specially for the bride and groom) set against modern, clean-lined lounge furniture. All enjoyed the celebratory atmosphere of the indoor-outdoor setting, which played host to the famous Horah dance and ended with a duet performance of “Sunrise, Sunset” by the bride and grooms’ fathers.

Susan and Sandeep Hindupur pulled off a wedding extravaganza that few people can claim. Not only did they plan two ceremonies over three days with five meals and separate themes, décor and attire, but they did it in exactly one year. On the morning of October 18—a mere 364 days after Sandeep proposed to Susan near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco (the locale of their first romantic getaway)—the two were anxiously preparing for what would be a 7am to 1am cross-cultural celebration of their union as husband and wife. A three-hour Hindu ceremony, conducted in Sanskrit amidst traditional Indian décor and a sacred fire of prayer, was the first of two nuptials witnessed by some 350 wedding guests at the Chase Park Plaza. While the bridal party had its photo op, guests were treated to a midday meal of both Indian and American cuisine before being ushered into the Khorrasan Ballroom for the civil ceremony. A lively reception, cast in the autumn-inspired colors of the second service, finished off the cross-cultural affair and integrated such American wedding traditions as the first dance and bouquet toss.

Two separate invitations were sent out for the fabulous affair: one printed in India with vibrant colors and designs and one printed on traditional ivory paper with brown accents in a silk envelope. Bollywood Style

A pre-wedding party held in the Chase’s Lindell Ballroom kicked off the weekend of festivities with traditional Indian Bahangra dancers and henna artists, who adorned the bridesmaids and other female guests with the ancient art form. Majestic Entrance

True to custom, the groom entered the Hindu ceremony atop a white horse, surrounded by cheering guests who danced to the sounds of a dhol (an Indian drum). Dressed to Impress

The bride pulled off two distinct looks fit for each ceremony, starting with a stunning red and gold sari, traditional Indian bangles and henna designs on her hands, arms and feet. The civil ceremony saw her in an ivory and gold Pronovias gown with a sweetheart neckline. Cultural Flair

The colorful draped fabric, beaded pillows, statues and flower garlands that adorned the Hindu ceremony were brought in straight from Natasha Décor, as was the traditional Indian attire worn by the bridal party and the majority of guests who stayed at the Chase.

slice of heaven Honest Italian cuisine in the heart of South City. By Cristy Miller | Photo by Liz Reiff Sloan Chef Vito Racanelli Jr. and I have something in common: We’re both Star Wars fans, although he’s

probably a true fanboy and unabashedly discloses that fact more than I do. He even brought along a Yoda figurine to each round of last summer’s 2008 Taste of St. Louis—maybe that helped him win the Top Chef title. But our George Lucas love affair aside, I’m a fan of Vito for his food and the experience to be had at Onesto Pizza & Trattoria. And this month they celebrate their one-year anniversary. Located at the corner of Macklind and Finkman, Onesto resides in a less-obvious dining neighborhood, but it’s oh-so worth the trip. Honest, fresh, homemade food at prices perfect for the penny-pinching diner. The front of this one-year-old restaurant features a waiting area with a few tables and visible pizza prep station, and pays homage to Star Wars with vintage posters and a few of Vito’s personal collectibles. The adjacent main dining room resembles more of a cozy trattoria—although the bathrooms are unique, one is droid-themed with an R2-D2 life-sized trashcan (the other bathroom represents Vito’s wife Michele’s love for Betty Boop). The menu is a clever combination of well-crafted pizza, homemade pastas and artisan sandwiches. Like any good Italian restaurant, bread is served first—and Onesto presents warm garlic knots with olive oil as a mouthwatering substitute. The Arancini is filling; a softball-

size rice ball stuffed with beef, parsley and Parmesan, deep-fried and served over Bolognese sauce. I enjoyed the salami roll with delicate salami, pepperoni and provolone rolled and baked in pizza dough. The selection of sandwiches, which are all served with wonderful hand-cut French fries (or choice of salad), are inventive yet retain their Italian roots; Take for instance the parmigiana, featuring layers of tomato sauce, parmesan and mozzarella and the Virginia Ham sandwich with creamy fontina layered with apple slices, smoked ham and stone ground mustard. But the pizza is what you’ll likely always end up ordering here. The pizzas, which include ten specialty brick-oven baked pies and a build-your-own option, are similar to New York style; semi-thin crust and a crisp center, most topped with a slightly sweet plum tomato sauce. The Queen Margherita tastes like a caprese with a twist, and is topped with fresh basil, mozzarella, olive oil, grated asiago and Parmesan cheeses, and the classic spinach pie. What it lacks in colorful toppings, it more than makes up for in taste with a tangy mix of creamy ricotta, Parmesan and Romano cheese with garlic and spinach. The Gut Buster pizza has more meat than you can imagine, and is covered with sausage, pepperoni, ham, bacon meatball, a handful of different veggies like mushrooms and black olives, and the kicker—extra cheese and sauce, and anchovies. There’s also a nice smoked chicken pizza with pepper bacon and roasted jalapeños over barbeque sauce and an “all about the veggies pizza” for those with a meat aversion. Cap off your meal with a rich tiramisu or a baked-to-order chocolate chip cookie topped with vanilla ice cream, which, all in all, will have you thinking, “Come back to Onesto, I will.”

parties, cool cocktails and summer entertaining. For inspiration on all of these, we turned to Maya Café in Maplewood. It has one of the most unique outdoor bars around—an old tugboat is the patio’s centerpiece—and its fresh-squeezed margaritas and housemade salsa will

get you fired up for the start of summer. The sevenyear-old restaurant’s new general manager and chef, Kyle Metzler, oversees a menu packed with south-ofthe-border classics, and he shares the recipe for one of his favorites: a traditional pork dish perfect to grill at home or showcase for a summertime party.

Puerco con Café For the Cuban Pork Rub 2 cups brown sugar 2 Tbsp chili powder 1 Tbsp cumin 1 Tbsp granulated garlic 1 Tbsp onion powder 1/2 Tbsp paprika 1/2 Tbsp cayenne 1 Tbsp black pepper 1/2 Tbsp oregano 1/2 cup coffee grounds

For the Black Bean and Corn Salsa 1 cup black beans (if canned, strain) 1 cup cooked corn kernels 1 cup diced tomatoes 1/4 cup diced red onion 1 Tbsp chopped cilantro Juice of 1 whole lime Salt and pepper to taste

Mix all the ingredients together for the pork rub in a bowl. In a separate bowl, mix all ingredients for Black Bean and Corn Salsa. Season pork cut of your choice with salt and pepper, then rub in a generous amount of rub mix. Grill the pork. Serve over white rice and top with the salsa.

Over 1,000 people joined us in toasting ALIVE’s 2009 Buzz Listers at Lucas Park Grille, where VIPS such as Pamela Raymond, Pat Shannon-VanMatre & Gary VanMatre sipped Absolut Mango cocktails and mingled with Buzz Listers Retta LeRitz-DiFate, Cynthia & Michael Uthoff, Kacie Starr Triplett, Chris Loesch and David Fisher. Attendees arrived to two beautiful Mercedes on display on Washington Avenue from Mercedes-Benz of Progress Point. Guests Mel Pashea, Kaylene Cohen, Ola Hawatmeh, Morris Wisdom and Cabanne Schlafly sipped Samuel Adams in the VIP area while Igal Alon, Debra Bass and Jeff Small were seen watching the behind-the-scenes video reel, created by GTV, from the Buzz List photo shoot. The video included photos of Buzz Listers such as Rams wide receiver Donnie Avery, Scott Wibbenmeyer and Ludo as they were styled by the experts at Studio Branca, Salon Branca, Salon Professional Academy and enjoyed food from Companion and Revival. At 8pm, Carissa Sweigart from Samuel Adams made a toast to the 2009 Buzz Listers including Terri F. Reilly, Nick Loftis, Tom Carnahan, Jesse Jones, Todd Beckman, Cindy Bambini, Patrice Mari and Mike Glodeck in the VIP area as Jan Anderson mingled with Jen Hengst and Buzz List photographer Tuan Lee.
