History in the Making
Brigid Dorsey & Jennifer Richmond at the ALIVE Client Appreciation Event.
Living in an age of omnipresent images has given us the ability to
feel a sense of nostalgia for eras we have never experienced. Through movies, television and photography, we’ve developed emotional connections with decades past. This month’s fashion editorial transports us to an era that’s as familiar to us as if we’d lived it ourselves, remembered through imprints of history captured on cellulose—Casablanca, The Philadelphia Story, the famous “Kiss by the Hotel de Ville” photo by Robert Doisneau and the iconic “VJ Day Kiss” photo of an American sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square in 1945. Escape into your dreams and live your fantasies as you dress this spring; become a heroine in hats, red lipstick and polished suiting.
>
In February’s Buzz List Issue, Tuan Lee captured images of St. Louisans that will live on in history. We had the honor of celebrating with all featured at the Buzz List Launch Event at Lucas Park Grille. Friends from Mercedes-Benz of Progress Point, Brown Shoe, Studio Branca, Salon Branca, Salon Professional Academy, Weinhardt Party Rentals and Gebbs Total Video joined us to mingle with the city’s elite and sip Sam Adams and Absolut Mango drinks. We wouldn’t have had the opportunity to deliver the striking portraits of so many St. Louisans to our readers without the generous support of our clients, advertisers and partners. On February 18, we toasted Pearl Vodka cocktails to them at Black Label, where ALIVE VIPs including Dennis Duncan, Ola Hawatmeh, Steve Buesching and Vito and Michele Racanelli networked and enjoyed Gregory’s Catering.

letter from the editor project design This month, we celebrate ALIVE’s sixth birthday. I’ve always
thought of birthdays not only as a time to celebrate who you are and what you’ve accomplished, but as a perfect opportunity to re-evaluate your goals. Over the last few months, the ALIVE team has done just that. We spent time celebrating our devoted readership, wonderfully supportive advertisers and the amazing team of entrepreneurial, dedicated and talented people we get to work with every day. We also spent time looking to the future, and we couldn’t be more thrilled about the direction we’re heading. We hope that excitement shows in the magazine you’re holding—a redesigned ALIVE that better reflects the evolution of our city, our readers and our goals. Redesigning a magazine is much like building a new home and then moving into it. It’s a process that involves defining your foundation (bringing readers more relevant, relatable stories), creating a blueprint (after scores of creative sessions), determining what to keep and what to toss (more on this in a minute…), and finally, bringing it all together before moving day arrives (kudos to Art Director Reshma Chamberlin, who put countless hours into the conception and execution of the redesign).
We hope you enjoy the renovations we’ve made—let us know! Drop us a line at letters@alivemag.com.

That said, the choice to launch our new look this month was anything but arbitrary. Besides being a birthday gift to ourselves, our redesign coincides with our annual Home & Design Issue. This month’s feature story “Ready, Set, Renovate!” (p.58) aims to help homeowners and all DIY’ers by giving them ideas and resources for sprucing up their living spaces, whether it’s finally putting in that backyard patio or giving Mom’s antique furniture a makeover.
We’re also debuting two new regular features: Weddings (p.40), a monthly story covering the nuptials of a St. Louis couple, and Hot Block (p.34), a page dedicated to a buzzy local neighborhood. And with design so top of mind, we caught up with this month’s cover guy, fashion designer and “Project Runway” runner-up Jerell Scott (p.56), who comes to St. Louis this month to judge Project: Design! at Saint Louis Fashion Week.

Jennifer Dulin Wiley vividly remembers the serious time and organization it took to plan a wedding. So when she interviewed Susan Hindupur about her twoday, double-ceremony Indian wedding extravaganza, she was totally impressed. Jennifer talked planning, expectations and culture infusion with Susan and fellow bride Lindsey Terry, who pulled off a combination Jewish-Catholic ceremony in style. Jennifer is the managing editor of Art Business News, a national fine-art magazine, and a regular contributor for ALIVE.
According to ALIVE fashion photographer Steve Garnett, “A photographer’s job is to tell a story with a lens—a story that takes on new definitions depending which eyes are trying to decipher meaning. I think this gray area is what makes it art.”
alivemag.com
Contributing Editor Natalie Kurz is no stranger to home renovations. As a newly anointed real estate investor (having purchased a four-family rental property last year), it was fun to share some of the latest trends and tips for home renovations in this month’s feature (p.58)—many of which she’s tried during kitchen and bathroom renovations in her own home. A few things she’s learned: there’s no such thing as too much closet space and pullout pantry cabinets make it hard to hide candy from toddlers.
A first-time contributor to ALIVE, L.A.-based fashion photographer Michael Dar welcomed the opportunity to once again photograph good friend and top designer Jerell Scott for the April issue. Michael said it was apparent from their first meeting seven years ago that Jerell “was not only a model; he was designer.” Michael’s passion for photography continues to mold the models of today into the supermodels of tomorrow. Blue Ocean Sushi serves won’t-break-the-bank-priced sushi and well-crafted cocktails. By Cristy Miller | Photo by Josh Monken As diners look to stretch their dollars these days, chefs and restaurateurs across the country
are taking notice, offering pre-fixe fare and discounted dinners. The folks at 609 Restaurant & Lounge in The Loop also noticed, and recently rolled out a new restaurant more fitting with the times, Blue Ocean Sushi. The concept: high-quality, all-you-can-eat sushi, at low price points. The new spot is located in the old 609 restaurant space, and while it’s under the same ownership—and roof—Blue Ocean Sushi is an entirely new restaurant and dining experience. The menu offers three price levels, ranging from $14.99 to $24.99 for lunch and $19.99 to $29.99 for dinner, and includes a selection of salads, soups and rolls to choose from. Popular rolls include the spicy salmon roll, cucumber roll and spider roll with soft-shell crab. Adjacent to the restaurant, the 609 Lounge remains a hotspot for hipsters and Loop-goers, offering a mix of DJs, drink specials and dancing in a sexy setting. With a rotating line-up of DJs, you can hear anything from house to hip-hop to Top 40. Saketinis are a hit here, like the Blue Ocean Saketini, made with sake, Absolut and Blue Cuaraco. 609 also features drink specials through the week on beer, and on Saturday, patrons can enjoy $100 Absolut bottle service all night. Who knew dining and drinking on a budget could be this good? (609 Eastgate Ave., The Loop, 314.721.9168)

Begin your organization overhaul at Beyond Storage.
3 ways to get
organized By Sheniqua Faulkner Face it: Your closet is chaotic. So frenzied, in fact, that the piles of shoes, stacks of sweaters and assorted accessories teeter on the verge of a rayon-cotton-cashmere-blended avalanche every time you open your closet door. You need an organization intervention.
Your messy closet isn’t just an eyesore; it could also be draining your wallet. (How many times have you purchased an article of clothing only to find a perfectly good version balled up in the corner of your closet?) De-clutter your closet with these three local resources that, over the long haul, will save you both time and money.
Custom Creations
Begin your organization overhaul from the ground up with a revamped closet from Beyond Storage, a St. Louis area custom closet and storage design company. Beyond Storage designs, manufactures and installs closet and organizational systems according to your individual specifications. With a variety of finishes and hardware to choose from, and the ability to add options such as drawers, hampers, sliding jewelry trays—even watch winders and pull-out mirrors—there is a solution for every closet conundrum. Once you conquer your closet, Beyond Storage can also help you organize your laundry room, garage, pantry or home office (2033 Concourse Dr., Creve Coeur, 314.997.0150).

“Getting organized is one thing, however staying organized is another,” says Ola Hawatmeh, founder of MomMeMakeover—a local company that specializes in helping working women and men better their lives through image consulting and life coaching. To organize their closets, Hawatmeh shows her clients how to assess what they should keep and what they can spare to lose. “I then show them how to make better use of their wardrobe by using accessories to mix and match with what they already have,” Hawatmeh says. “My clients learn to spend less, use what they have and only buy what they need.” (314.456.3936, mommemakeover .com).
3. Storage Solutions
With all the money you’ll be saving by not buying clothes you don’t need, you can invest in some organizational accessories that make the clothes you do have easier to locate. After all, if it’s not easy, you won’t stick with it. We like Martha Stewart Collection’s new Closet Shop line ($9.99-$29.99) available exclusively at Macy’s. Collapsible storage boxes, over-the-door shoe pockets, pop-up hampers and streamlined hangers make a big organizational impact while taking up minimal space. Now when that must-have dress finally goes on sale, you’ll actually have a place to hang it (Macy’s, 1550 Saint Louis Galleria, Richmond Heights, 314.726.1810).

interview
Jane Says A conversation with Jane Seymour. By Jill Manoff | Photo by Charles Bush With a career that spans more than twenty years, actress, writer, producer and designer Jane Seymour opens up about life’s ups and downs, becoming a comedian and sharing her personal artwork with St. Louis this month.
jill manoff: Tell me about your artwork. Jane seymour: Whereas some artists do a lot
of the same thing, I do a variety of artwork. Sometimes people come to my shows and they ask which pieces are mine; when they’re told it’s all my work, they’re in shock. At the Wentworth Gallery, there will be everything from classic watercolors to vibrant oil paintings—very impressionist pieces, then I have a series of single flowers that some compare to Georgia O’Keeffe’s work, some landscapes and then—of course—the whole Open Hearts collection, which is inspired by my jewelry. JM: What inspires your paintings? JS: I started painting 18 years ago when I was

going through a terrible crisis in my life. I had lost all of my homes, my money, my marriage, everything. I was beyond bankrupt and sued by every major bank and the FDIC; it was about as bad as it gets—so that’s why I really understand what people are going through right now. My mother always told me to go out and do something to help somebody else when life seems insurmountable. I was at a fundraiser for a child abuse charity I worked with called Child Help; there was a silent auction that I bid on for an artist to come to my home and do a drawing of my children. He saw the finger paintings that I’d done with my kids and thought they were very good; he offered to give me a couple of free lessons—so that’s how I started. It became a healing for me. I really process a lot of feelings through my art. So, that’s why my art is so personal. JM: How did your jewelry collection come about? JS: I was going through a really tough time about a year-and-a-half ago when my mom was very sick. I decided to make myself a single diamond pendant to wear just to remind myself to keep my heart open, as that was always my mom’s advice to me. I was just randomly wearing it one night at a dinner and two of the people at my table were very curious about my necklace. It turned out they were with Kay Jewelers. The Open Hearts design actually came from a sketch I did on the back of a napkin in a fast food restaurant! I am always thinking up new concepts and ideas; I usually carry a sketchbook.
On March 27 (7pm-9pm) and March 28 (5pm8pm), Jane Seymour will appear at the Wentworth Gallery to present her “Jane Seymour: A One Woman Show” art exhibition, which will include original oils, acrylic and watercolor paintings, as well as limited-edition artwork—all available for purchase (West County Center; for more information, call 314.821.8884).

JM: I know you also have a book titled Open Hearts. JS: It has a lot of my artwork in it and it also has writings—by me, by people I met on the Internet who told me their inspirational stories, by friends; it includes pieces by Shakespeare; Martin Luther King, Jr.; Kennedy; the Pope; Mother Teresa; Rudyard Kipling; Eckhart Tolle—different people talking about what it means to live life with an open heart. JM: What has been your favorite acting role? JS: Dr. Quinn basically saved my life. I had
declared bankruptcy and I told the networks that I was willing to do anything out there; I am
fully ready and available. The “anything” that turned up was this little movie called “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.” They decided to make it into a series and signed me on for five years. It surprised everyone and lasted for seven years, and is still is shown in 98 countries around the world. JM: What was it like on the set of Wedding Crashers? JS: Hysterical. Vince Vaughn is really funny; Isla Fisher is hysterical; it was a wonderful experience and I’ve done a lot of comedy since then. In fact, now I’m mostly known for comedy. It’s like I have a whole new career now—it was Jane Seymour, the actress; now it’s Jane Seymour, the comedian. JM: Tell me about your experience on “Dancing with the Stars” (Season 4)? JS: It was one of those extraordinary experiences in my life that I will never forget. I remember how hard it was to do. I was beyond sore; I mean—nails falling off, blood everywhere, pulled muscles. I had to have injections in my ribcage because my ribs were so badly strained, all while going to therapy three times a week for back issues I had before the show started. But I loved it. JM: It seems like you never age; what’s your best beauty secret? JS: Jane Seymour Natural Advantage; I use it all the time. I have an alpha hydroxy for day and I use a retinol cream at night—and it works. That’s all I use; I use it every day and it makes a huge difference. I don’t do Botox, I don’t do facelifts, I don’t do dermabrasions or laser peels or any of that stuff. I don’t even have facials!

get ready for swimsuit season
Reduce the appearance of cellulite with SmoothShapes. By Natalie Kurz
For most women, the phrase “swimsuit season” is preceded by the word “dreaded.” Who wants to put their lumps, bumps and imperfections on display for the entire world—or at least, the entire pool area—to see? That’s where SmoothShapes comes in. It’s a new, painless laser treatment that’s FDAapproved to reduce the appearance of cellulite—music to the ears of the 85 percent of women who suffer from cottage-cheese thighs and dimple-butt. Based on six years of research to reduce cellulite, SmoothShapes uses laser and light energy, plus rollers and suction, to help liquefy and break up fat cells from stomachs, thighs—wherever!—without injections or pain. The 30-minute treatment really just feels like a deep tissue massage, with the similar side-effect of slightly sore muscles, akin to a strenuous workout. Smoother, tighter, less dimply skin can be seen in as little as two treatments, with optimal results appearing after about four bi-weekly treatments, with long-term results lasting as long as six months. Some patients even report losing up to one inch off each thigh after a single series of treatments—now that’s a reason to buy a new bikini. SmoothShapes is available exclusively at St. Louis Center for Preventive & Longevity Medicine, owned by Dr. Richard Bligh, who was recently featured as a “trailblazer in anti-aging medicine” in the national beauty magazine New Beauty. Dr. Bligh specializes in a wide range of treatments to help manage age from the inside out, including hormone replacement therapy, a neutraceutical program, liquid face lifts (done with injectables), ProFraxel, Thermage, Botox, microdermabrasion and more. For more info on SmoothShapes and other treatments Dr. Bligh offers, call 314.994.1536 (777 S. New Ballas Rd., Ste. 200E, Town and Country, drblighmd.com).

summer shades Go incognito with two new collections from Sama. By Jill Manoff For ten years, elegant designs,
exclusive materials and revolutionary technology have kept Sama Eyewear at the forefront of the eyewear industry. So, to celebrate a decade of success, Sama Eyewear founder and designer Sheila Vance recently introduced two new sunwear collections—Incognito and Sahara. Perfect for the off-duty celebrity, the Incognito line features darker lenses and thicker, more opaque-colored frames and includes multiple men’s and women’s designs. And, as seen for the first time on a Sama Eyewear design, each incorporates a signature brand emblem—a three-dimensional pyramid in silver or gold. The Sahara collection, inspired by Vance’s recent, “magical” trip to Egypt, is based on ancient iconic Egyptian jewelry. Incorporating intricate details, each of the six styles is named after a mythical goddess. So shop the latest by Sama, but be forewarned: the fashionable frames already have a reputation for triggering style envy and unpredictable urges to sing “Walk Like an Egyptian” (Destination: Sama, Saint Louis Galleria, 314.725.0214).

savvy custom diamond shopping
[ How To ]
By Jill Manoff You’ve coveted your friend’s customized rock and have fantasized about your own dream
ring—a designed-by-you stunner you figured your significant other could never afford. You were mistaken. At Mavrik Jewelry, the specialty is beautiful, custom diamond jewelry that fits any budget. From one of the largest diamond-cutting families in the business, Igal has unparalleled access to the
world’s finest gems. If custom is what you’re seeking but this economy has you looking for bargains, head to Mavrik and let Igal either assist you in choosing from his collection of classic or contemporary settings—or use your ideas to create a piece of dream jewelry that is all your own. Either way, you can shop confidently knowing that—finally—you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for at a price you can afford. Brilliant! (200 S. Kirkwood Rd., #104; Kirkwood; 314.909.6818)
Whether you’re preparing to buy a diamond this year or dreaming of a custom-designed engagement ring that you just can’t wait to show off, everyone could use a little expert shopping advice. Igal Alon, owner of Mavrik Jewelry in Kirkwood, reveals three insider tips on picking your perfect stone. 1. Understand that quality equals value. Remember that diamond prices are always based on cut, color, clarity and carat weight. If you stumble upon a one-carat stone that is being sold at an outrageously low price, one of the other “four C’s” is likely far less than stellar. 2. Learn about cut and polish. An excellent cut combined with a high-quality polish gives a diamond ample “sparkle.” If there is little light refraction, chances are the diamond’s facets are not smooth and there are polishing imperfections.
hot picks: custom creations Three one-of-a-kind designs by Mavrik Jewelry.
3. Insist on examining several stones side by side. Because no two diamonds are alike, you can train your eye to spot differences in quality simply by comparing multiple stones of the same shape side by side. Alyssa Engagement Ring 3 carat cushion-cut center stone with an 18k white gold mounting.

behind the seams Fashion Designer and “Project Runway” alum Jerell Scott on inspirations, reality TV and showing at Saint Louis Fashion Week. By Jill Manoff photograph by Michael Dar Best known as the third runner-up on “Project Runway”’s Season 5, Jerell Scott is already a success in the world of fashion design. Showing a collection at New York Fashion Week, opening his own boutique (Jane Doe John Doe in the heart of Los Angeles) and remaining a likable favorite for his duration on a fashion-based reality show are just a few of the fabulous accomplishments he can report on his résumé. In addition, he can soon add Project: Design! judge. No stranger to design competitions, the tables will turn at Saint Louis Fashion Week on March 25 when Jerell will send five hopeful contestants back to their drawing boards until next season. But, known as the lighthearted contestant who provided assistance to his opponents, we’re betting his words of dismissal will be much more consoling than “Auf Wiedersehen!”
Jill Manoff: What’s your first memory of
fashion?
Jerell Scott: It’s actually kind of a funny
story. I was like six years old, and I was playing with my sister and her dolls and we were playing awards show. I was looking at the doll’s dress and thinking, “Oh my gosh, this needs to be fancier,” so I got one of my dad’s tube socks and I cut the bottom off to make a dress with a train. That was the first kind of fashion-y thing I ever did.
JM: Have you always been so fashionable? JS: I think I was always really an individual. I
always did my own thing. At any time in my life, had you asked, I probably would have described myself as being very fashionable, but in retrospect, there were some questionable things. I think when you take risks in fashion and you dare to be different, you’re bound to stumble at times. I remember this whole bleached corduroy phase; very questionable.
JM: What designers inspire you?
56
|
alive stl april 2009
JS: I’m a huge fan of very opulent, ornate stuff, which you can probably tell from my work. So I really love Alexander McQueen, Karl Lagerfeld, Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood…people who aren’t afraid to really push it and do something different; who like the more opulent, the more regal; who are good at making unexpected things that look expensive. I’m into the show of it all, you know? The fantasy of it.
JM: Do you look to clothes for expression? JS: I have a lot to say, and I definitely see de-
JM: What sort of fashion design training did you have? JS: I’m self-taught. I’ve always been a very creative person. I’m very good at visual things—I can do interior design, I’ve done landscaping, I’ve done set design, hair, makeup, all sorts of stuff like that. But I used to model, and that was what actually led me to this career. I was living in New York and getting opportunities to go to all of these really great parties, but a brother did not have the money to go and spend on the cool clothes—so I had to teach myself how to work them out.
JM: Describe your experience on “Project Runway.” JS: It was the absolute most fun and hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. It was really difficult because there is no time for self-doubt. Plus, you’re competing; you’re constantly being filmed; you know the world is going to see your every move, so there’s that pressure—at one point, while working on my collection, I was like, “Damn! Anna Wintour’s going to see this!” We slept between four and six hours a night; the longest work day we had was 36 hours. The further you go in the competition, the more sleep deprived
signing as a means of expression. I consider my clothes wearable art. I feel really privileged to have found what my passion is so early in life, because I think so many people go through life just doing what they have to do and they never really get a chance to explore what it is that really makes them happy.
alivemag.com
“When given the opportunity, you better rise to the occasion, or get out of the way.”
you become. It’s extremely demanding, and people don’t really get that when they just watch the show because they’re getting it in their one-hour, bite-size pieces. It’s so easy to sit at home and question or criticize, but—all I can say is—when you’re in it, it’s ridiculous. Nobody works like that in real life. Then again, when given the opportunity, you better rise to the occasion, or get out of the way. JM: Were you heartbroken that you didn’t make it to the top three? JS: First off, it’s a show. People say I was cheated or whatever, but I don’t really look at it that way. I loved my wedding dress [Jerell was eliminated after the Wedding Dress Challenge] and, if it wasn’t to the liking of the judges, what can I really do? I think, for all of us on the show, it got to the point where we just wanted to be true to who we were. You can’t compromise yourself to appease anybody. If it’s not a true representation of who you are, there’s really no worth in it. Each week that I stayed on meant that I had more time to show the world what I can do.
alivemag.com
JM: Are you still friends with the other contestants? JS: Yes! I just opened a store here in Los Angeles called Jane Doe John Doe; I really wanted a place that would bridge the gap between the designers, who have no marketing experience, and the consumer. I carry my line, I’ve got Korto’s line, I’ve got Leanne’s line, I’ve got Stella’s line, I’ve got Emily’s line, plus there’s a host of new designers that have yet to be discovered by the world. JM: So you’ve been busy since the show? JS: It’s been crazy! I feel so blessed and privi-
leged to have been given this opportunity. I just want to use it. I’m really excited to be showing at Saint Louis Fashion Week because it’s given me great reason to create some extraordinary clothes. I am all about the drama of it all, which you will see when I deliver my delicious collection. I’m going to kill it! JM: Where do you see your line in five years? JS: My ultimate plan is global domination. What
I love is to create gorgeous, opulent, museumquality garments. That’s what I’m about. I’m not as much into the ready-to-wear, but in the next 5 years, it would be good to have kind of a lower-end line because, honestly, that’s where the money is. But what’s important is that I’m still doing what I love and that I’m happy. JM: As judge of Saint Louis Fashion Week’s Bakers Project: Design! competition, do you have any advice for the contestants? JS: Just express who you are as a designer. I am all about the individual, and you can tell when someone is trying to do what someone else has done. We are all inspired by other people, but I personally do not want to see blatant knockoffs of other people’s work. Just be original and have fun—and may the best designer win! 1.
Get Floored
With the huge range of flooring available now—ranging from inexpensive, but realistic-looking laminate to gorgeous, long-lasting hardwood—no one should have to put up with shag carpet. There’s a flooring solution out there for every taste and budget. While always the top choice for homeowners, wood floors are seeing a trend toward wider, more distressed planks and exotic woods like Brazilian cherry, mahogany, teak and walnut, as opposed to plain maple or oak. And if you can’t decide, that’s okay too—mixing woods from room to room or by creating borders is also increasingly popular. For those looking to shake things up a bit, there’s been a big surge in large ceramic tile (especially in bathrooms), stained concrete (great for the loft look), travertine (adds instant elegance) and green flooring options like cork and bamboo.
3.
5.
Fun With Fabric
Take any room from bland to bold by just adding some inviting fabric to windows, floors and furniture. Custom curtains transform sterile shades into a welcoming window, while the right accent rug can perk up a hall, great room or bedroom. Throw rugs are also a great way to tie rooms together or highlight a piece of furniture—a dining room table looks awfully lonely without an oversized rug beneath it. Add a few bright, contrasting throw pillows and watch as your space goes from sparse to spectacular.
2.
The Great Wall
One of the simplest, least-expensive ways to liven up a room is to infuse the walls with new color or an innovative accent. Color palettes are tilting toward very vibrant, versatile hues inspired by everyday life—think spices, flowers, water, the Far East. And if you just want to add a splash of interest, paint one accent wall of a room to create an instant focal point. You can also add texture to walls by using special textured paint or having them re-plastered. For a dramatic redo, try wallpaper—but not the kind with the oversized flowers or farm animals. Today’s wallpaper is pure high-end design with metallic textures, modern patterns and elegant designs. Cover a whole wall, install it above a chair rail or even run a border. For something really dramatic, commission original wall art in the form of a mural or typography, which are both increasingly popping up in celebrity homes.
When Old is New Again Furniture restoration is a resourceful way to breathe new life back into outdated, damaged or just plain ugly pieces— it’s not only cheaper than replacing perfectly good furniture, but it reduces environmental waste as well. Most furniture restoration places can reupholster chairs and sofas, refinish and repair wood furniture (including grandma’s old armoire) and even design and build custom pieces to your specifications. Just imagine digging your dingy dining room set again…
6.
Grow Your Garage
4.
Go Green
There are more ways than ever to make your dwelling more eco-friendly, from the floor to the roof—literally. Green flooring options are hugely popular, with bamboo, cork and reclaimed wood topping the list of materials. And solar, reflective or PV roofs (which create and store carbon-free energy for home use) are not only better for the environment, but they can drastically reduce your energy costs. From quick fixes like insulating hot water pipes or hanging a clothesline (to reduce energy consumption) to larger projects like installing a skylight or energy-efficient ceiling fan, greenifying your home will make a difference in the energy cost for both you and the environment.
Want to add more functional space to your home without paying the hefty price tag of a full addition? All you need is a garage—at least, a well-organized one. Garage customization is a cost-effective way to increase usable space by creating a work area for home improvement projects, installing cabinets for more efficient storage and redoing floors for easier maintenance and cleanup. You can tailor cabinets, storage solutions, work benches and more to your exact specifications, so there isn’t any wasted space or wasted money.
7.
Closet Clean-Up
One of the top complaints of homeowners? Not enough closet space. But what they really mean is poorly organized closets—the right closet configuration can dramatically increase its usable space, translating to less stuff without a place to go. If there’s a more efficient way to use your closet space—whether it’s a pantry, office, kid’s room, bedroom walk-in or utility closet—companies that specialize in closet customization will find it using every imaginable combination of baskets, cubbies, shelves, drawers, hooks, trays and pull-outs.

9.
That’s Entertainment
Recliners with built-in fridges and more cup holders than a full-size SUV, jumbo flat-screens, pool tables and video games galore—adults are getting their dose of fun by creating personalized game rooms so enticing they could charge admission. Make your home the hangout du jour with oldschool arcade games, a pimped-out stereo system, virtual golf, billiards, a jukebox and more. Keg-erator optional.
10.
The Great Outdoors
Whether you want a peaceful oasis or the perfect pool patio, investing in the outdoors offers an endless return on your investment. For big impact, pools, hot tubs and water features can’t be beat for backyard improvements, while repaved stone walkways, decks, privacy fences and new outdoor furniture offer easy updates for exteriors.
Entry Enhancements
Doors and windows do more than protect and insulate your home—they add brightness, warmth and character too. While dual-pane windows offer superior insulation (and can help reduce heating and cooling costs), many purists prefer to refinish and re-glaze older windows to preserve their historical beauty. Floor-to-ceiling windows are a huge trend now, as they add tons of natural light and ambiance to a room. A new front door can change the entire look of your home, adding a splash of color, embellishment or classicism to its appearance.
11 . 12 .
Cabinet Members
With as much time as we spend in our bathrooms and kitchens, it’s frustrating when they look outdated and old. Replacing or refinishing bathroom or kitchen cabinets is not only an affordable way to modernize the space, but it increases the value of your home. For current trends, look to rich colors like cherry, ebony and mahogany, while heavy carvings and elaborate moldings are moving over for more sleek finishes and trim. Storage customization is also a must when redoing cabinets, with pull-out drawers, built-in spice racks and display space shelves or glass-paneled doors.
13. 14. |
There’s no need to redo an entire kitchen to update the look—just replacing the counters can make a stale kitchen feel brand new. Now considered the standard of every modern kitchen, granite countertops are even getting a makeover with bolder colors and more exotic pattern options. Other exotic natural stones, including soapstone, slate or onyx, are becoming increasingly popular because they offer the durability of granite with a more contemporary look. For a more industrial feel, some kitchen rehabbers are turning to stainless steel or poured concrete counters, which offer superior durability and a modern aesthetic.
Quick Fixture Fixes
Design is in the details, so don’t overlook the effect that new hardware, faucets, appliances or fixtures can make. Trends tend toward the completely modern (with brushed nickel, wall-mounted faucets and commercial-grade stainless steel appliances) or original period details (with ornate dresser sinks, antiqued bronze and retro-colored appliances). Regardless of which design route you take, home owners are hankering for modern convenience with hand-help sprayers, dual rain showerheads and high-performance appliances with all the bells and whistles.
The Light Way
Add an instant update to any room in minutes by simply swapping out the light fixture. The most popular options now are sleek, colorful and sometimes whimsical, with a focus on recessed lighting, hanging pendant lights and three-light chandeliers. People are more focused on kitchen lighting as well, adding unique under-cabinet illumination for more precise task lighting. Of course, energy-efficient bulbs are always a wise investment.

Increasing Curb Appeal
First impressions speak volumes, so it’s imperative that the outside of your home fits your personality as much as the inside. People underestimate the impact that tuckpointing and brick work can do for the overall appearance of a house, especially older homes in more historic neighborhoods. Adding points of interest, like a stone walkway, retaining wall or custom outdoor lighting can also add instant curb appeal while improving functionality. alivemag.com

tradition with a twist Two St. Louis couples design their own outside-the-box big days. By Jennifer Dulin Wiley
lindsey& jack Photos by Steve Seebeck
The Bride: Lindsey Schwartz, 30, Yoga Instructor/Public
Relations Specialist
The Groom: Jack Terry, 32, Attorney
A priest standing under a chuppah or a rabbi reciting the Lord’s Prayer are hardly the sights of a conventional ceremony, but they were the very events that made Lindsey and Jack Terry’s wedding truly their own. Intent on creating a stunning multi-denominational affair and with the help of Cosmopolitan Events, the couple performed such Jewish rituals as the signing of the Ketuveh and the breaking of the glass directly alongside the Christian rites of exchanging vows and rings. Holding the ceremony and reception at a single site (The Rialto Ballroom) helped them achieve a second important union—an elegant fusion of modern and romantic tastes. Guests of the June 7 affair entered the space to find a stunning antique crystal chandelier (brought in specially for the bride and groom) set against modern, clean-lined lounge furniture. All enjoyed the celebratory atmosphere of the indoor-outdoor setting, which played host to the famous Horah dance and ended with a duet performance of “Sunrise, Sunset” by the bride and grooms’ fathers.

Timeless Tradition
The bride found a beautiful antique tapestry to hang atop the chuppah during the ceremony. Here Comes the Bride
The couple’s adorable golden retriever, Hanna, precessed down the aisle just before Lindsey with a sign announcing “Here Comes the Bride.” Modern Romance
The couple transformed The Rialto Ballroom—an urban loft-inspired venue that appealed to Jack’s more modern tastes—by incorporating a few classic elements (white wash, candles and light-pink roses) that achieved the more intimate, romantic ambiance Lindsey desired. guest book with a Twist
Guests partook in a modern version of the traditional guestbook, which asked them to draw pictures of themselves and offer newlywed advice or other fun-filled anecdotes. Personal Touch
Tin Can (the place where they first met), 4/26 (the date of their engagement) and 7351 (the address of their old house) were just a few of the creative table names the couple used in lieu of traditional table numbers.

susan& sandeep Photos by Brent Kuhlmann
The Bride: Susan Cohen, 28, Intensive Care Unit Nurse, Barnes-
Jewish Hospital
The Groom: Sandeep Hindupur, 29, Cardiology Fellow, Barnes-
Jewish Hospital
Susan and Sandeep Hindupur pulled off a wedding extravaganza that few people can claim. Not only did they plan two ceremonies over three days with five meals and separate themes, décor and attire, but they did it in exactly one year. On the morning of October 18—a mere 364 days after Sandeep proposed to Susan near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco (the locale of their first romantic getaway)—the two were anxiously preparing for what would be a 7am to 1am cross-cultural celebration of their union as husband and wife. A three-hour Hindu ceremony, conducted in Sanskrit amidst traditional Indian décor and a sacred fire of prayer, was the first of two nuptials witnessed by some 350 wedding guests at the Chase Park Plaza. While the bridal party had its photo op, guests were treated to a midday meal of both Indian and American cuisine before being ushered into the Khorrasan Ballroom for the civil ceremony. A lively reception, cast in the autumn-inspired colors of the second service, finished off the cross-cultural affair and integrated such American wedding traditions as the first dance and bouquet toss.

details
Double Vision
Two separate invitations were sent out for the fabulous affair: one printed in India with vibrant colors and designs and one printed on traditional ivory paper with brown accents in a silk envelope. Bollywood Style
A pre-wedding party held in the Chase’s Lindell Ballroom kicked off the weekend of festivities with traditional Indian Bahangra dancers and henna artists, who adorned the bridesmaids and other female guests with the ancient art form. Majestic Entrance
True to custom, the groom entered the Hindu ceremony atop a white horse, surrounded by cheering guests who danced to the sounds of a dhol (an Indian drum). Dressed to Impress
The bride pulled off two distinct looks fit for each ceremony, starting with a stunning red and gold sari, traditional Indian bangles and henna designs on her hands, arms and feet. The civil ceremony saw her in an ivory and gold Pronovias gown with a sweetheart neckline. Cultural Flair
The colorful draped fabric, beaded pillows, statues and flower garlands that adorned the Hindu ceremony were brought in straight from Natasha Décor, as was the traditional Indian attire worn by the bridal party and the majority of guests who stayed at the Chase.

Fontbonne University Fontbonne University OPTIONS Program
For anyone who may be interested in leaning more about Saint Louis University’s business programs or about the school as a whole, look no further than Troy Turnipseed. After completing his degree in Organizational Studies/ Communications at SLU, Troy eventually ended up working in the John Cook School of Business. It was there that he decided an MBA was the next logical step in his career.
After achieving success in the corporate world, Holly Halverson-Finazzo strived for more. Her next move would be to find an MBA program that would make her more marketable and competitive in higher management positions. As she searched for the school that was right for her—a busy mom with a full-time career—Holly knew she required a program that was both flexible and challenging. She found both in Fontbonne University OPTIONS Program for working adults.
In his search for MBA programs, Troy says that the importance of the program’s reputation was paramount. SLU was an attractive option to him, not only because its MBA program is well known and highly respected in the St. Louis business community, but also because the business school’s 7,500 local alums meant endless networking opportunities.
“From the moment I interviewed with the admission counselor I knew I was welcomed,” Holly says. “I knew the course work would be challenging, productive, applicable, timely and fun. But equally important, I knew that I would be treated as an integral part of the program, not just another student.”
Furthermore, SLU’s John Cook Business School’s impressive accreditation from the AACSB also appealed to Troy. AACSB accreditation is the highest business school standard with only 15 percent of business schools worldwide attaining the accreditation. “When looking at MBA programs, it is the best to do your research and make a decision that is best for you,” Troy says. “Do your homework: Find an AACSB accredited university. It makes a difference.”
Today, Holly puts her MBA from Fontbonne to work in her position as an account manager for Radi-St. Jude Medical Systems. “The Fontbonne University OPTIONS Program MBA provided me with the tools I needed to more effectively and efficiently lead my employees to greater success.”

Washington University Washington University’s University College One Brookings Drive, St. Louis, MO 63130 314.935.6700 • ucollege.wustl.edu After a glamorous and successful career in the field of fashion and design, Carol Epstein returned to school to take care of what this lifelong learner calls her “unfinished business.” Carol’s academic journey from a single class in Israeli Politics culminated in her graduation from Washington University last August with a Bachelors, a Masters and a minor. Carol is an active Wash U. alum, and stays involved with the university that gave her so much. In fact, as a direct result of her Masters thesis, Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum is working with Carol and one of her professors on creating an exhibit featuring Native American art and iconography, bringing it to Washington University in January 2010. “I would heartily recommend Washington University’s University College to anyone interested in pursuing their academic goals,” says Carol. “Whether one’s objectives are simple or perhaps more complex, the professional staff and superior faculty at the college make continuing education a most worthwhile endeavor.”
While attending community college in Colorado, Ben Chapman decided he needed a change. He wanted to find a program where he could not only cultivate his gift for working with students and pursue a degree in English Education, but also a school where he’d be an integral part of a close-knit community. When he decided on Missouri Baptist University, it was a perfect match. “At so many colleges, it is really easy to get lost in the crowd,” Ben says. “MBU is a smaller campus, so you feel much closer to all of your fellow students and teachers. It really does feel like a family.” Ben experienced MBU’s familial warmth as soon as he met with the school’s admissions personnel and academic advisors. Ben says they were genuinely interested in his success—they helped him create a plan of action for his coursework and kept him up-to-date on all of the scholarship opportunities available to him. Come 2010, when he will receive his B.A. in English education, the many students Ben will have in his classroom will surely benefit from the worldclass education he received at Missouri Baptist University.

slice of heaven Honest Italian cuisine in the heart of South City. By Cristy Miller | Photo by Liz Reiff Sloan Chef Vito Racanelli Jr. and I have something in common: We’re both Star Wars fans, although he’s
probably a true fanboy and unabashedly discloses that fact more than I do. He even brought along a Yoda figurine to each round of last summer’s 2008 Taste of St. Louis—maybe that helped him win the Top Chef title. But our George Lucas love affair aside, I’m a fan of Vito for his food and the experience to be had at Onesto Pizza & Trattoria. And this month they celebrate their one-year anniversary. Located at the corner of Macklind and Finkman, Onesto resides in a less-obvious dining neighborhood, but it’s oh-so worth the trip. Honest, fresh, homemade food at prices perfect for the penny-pinching diner. The front of this one-year-old restaurant features a waiting area with a few tables and visible pizza prep station, and pays homage to Star Wars with vintage posters and a few of Vito’s personal collectibles. The adjacent main dining room resembles more of a cozy trattoria—although the bathrooms are unique, one is droid-themed with an R2-D2 life-sized trashcan (the other bathroom represents Vito’s wife Michele’s love for Betty Boop). The menu is a clever combination of well-crafted pizza, homemade pastas and artisan sandwiches. Like any good Italian restaurant, bread is served first—and Onesto presents warm garlic knots with olive oil as a mouthwatering substitute. The Arancini is filling; a softball-

size rice ball stuffed with beef, parsley and Parmesan, deep-fried and served over Bolognese sauce. I enjoyed the salami roll with delicate salami, pepperoni and provolone rolled and baked in pizza dough. The selection of sandwiches, which are all served with wonderful hand-cut French fries (or choice of salad), are inventive yet retain their Italian roots; Take for instance the parmigiana, featuring layers of tomato sauce, parmesan and mozzarella and the Virginia Ham sandwich with creamy fontina layered with apple slices, smoked ham and stone ground mustard. But the pizza is what you’ll likely always end up ordering here. The pizzas, which include ten specialty brick-oven baked pies and a build-your-own option, are similar to New York style; semi-thin crust and a crisp center, most topped with a slightly sweet plum tomato sauce. The Queen Margherita tastes like a caprese with a twist, and is topped with fresh basil, mozzarella, olive oil, grated asiago and Parmesan cheeses, and the classic spinach pie. What it lacks in colorful toppings, it more than makes up for in taste with a tangy mix of creamy ricotta, Parmesan and Romano cheese with garlic and spinach. The Gut Buster pizza has more meat than you can imagine, and is covered with sausage, pepperoni, ham, bacon meatball, a handful of different veggies like mushrooms and black olives, and the kicker—extra cheese and sauce, and anchovies. There’s also a nice smoked chicken pizza with pepper bacon and roasted jalapeños over barbeque sauce and an “all about the veggies pizza” for those with a meat aversion. Cap off your meal with a rich tiramisu or a baked-to-order chocolate chip cookie topped with vanilla ice cream, which, all in all, will have you thinking, “Come back to Onesto, I will.”

get you fired up for the start of summer. The sevenyear-old restaurant’s new general manager and chef, Kyle Metzler, oversees a menu packed with south-ofthe-border classics, and he shares the recipe for one of his favorites: a traditional pork dish perfect to grill at home or showcase for a summertime party.
