One of our favorite things about springtime is the return of our outdoor location shoot. For our June fashion feature, we rounded up the posse and headed west to Golden Hills Trail Rides & Resorts in Raymondville. There, we discovered the beautiful landscape of Southwest Missouri; complete with tall bluffs, blue rivers and rolling hills, it was the perfect location for highlighting this season’s westerninspired trends. The scenery’s charm, depicted beautifully by photographer Tuan Lee (p.56), was matched only by that of our hosts, Kay and Chuck Golden. Location shoots are even more of an adventure when scheduled the morning after one of our late-night parties. Our entire team was fashionably groggy following our Sixth Anniversary celebration at Sol Lounge, where we were joined by such local celebs as Y98’s Paul Cook and St. Louis Rams Kicker Josh Brown. ALIVE “Man of Style” alum Mike McMillan lived up to his title, while Amy Johnson, Ola Hawatmeh and Talent Plus’s Christina Klobe and Paul Gibson were also dressed to the nines. Savile Row’s Wendy Jones was seen chatting up Igal Alon, owner of Mavrik, and Curt Parker was overheard discussing car trends with Tom Akers of Plaza Land Rover and Chris Klugesherz of Plaza Audi. Brian Young mixed and mingled with Dominic Michael Salon’s Dominic Bertani, while Sam Adams’ Carissa Sweigart caught up with DSly. The Silver Lady, a.k.a. Lori Shifter, sipped cocktails with Advanced Laser’s Pam Bligh, while Sol’s Brian Schmitz played host to a slew of revelers, including Dennis Duncan, Chef Gregory Mosberger and Vito and Michelle Racanelli. This month, join us at The Pepper Lounge on June 6 for our annual Hot List Event, where we’ll celebrate our favorite St. Louis spots. Then, on June 27, head to Novak’s for Ultra, PrideFest’s always-popular VIP party.

letter from the editor Red-Hot Issue Summer really heats up at ALIVE in June, when we put out our annual Hot List issue. What wouldn’t warm your heart about taking some time to pay tribute to the best local businesses, cultural institutions and people that continue to make our city a great place to live? The entire ALIVE team has a great time planning the annual “Hot List” that names awards in over 150 categories—first, we get to spend hours listing all the reasons we love living in St. Louis right now; everyone has something to add and each year the list of why our city is a happening place grows longer. Then, we generate our mega-list of St. Louis’ top spots to eat, drink, party and play, from this year’s best new restaurant to the best place to score the latest trends on a budget. Once the winners are chosen, ALIVE’s writers, editors and designers get busy putting together our longest feature of the year. Ensure your summer is a hot one—check out this year’s awardees in the story, starting on p.66.
It’s an especially hot issue anytime we get to sit down for an interview with a favorite St. Louis Cardinal. An avid Redbirds fan since birth, ALIVE Managing Editor Cristy Miller was stoked to catch up with Cards pitcher Chris Carpenter over lunch at Cielo restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel. Joined by his wife Alyson, Chris talked candidly about his teammates, injuries and achievements to date, which are plenty. But Chris is someone to admire for more than his killer curveball. This Cy Young winner and World Series Champion has been a St. Louis favorite since joining the team in 2003 due to his down-to-earth, gentle demeanor and approachability on and off the field.
We hope you enjoy this year’s winners as much as we do. Join us in celebrating them at our Hot List Event on June 6 at award-winning nightclub, The Pepper Lounge. See you there!

The crew that produced this month’s cover shoot couldn’t have agreed more. Wendy Jones of Savile Row Custom Clothiers provided Chris with dapper duds, while Amber Weiner of Paul Mitchell (St. Louis Academy-Paul Mitchell Partner School) readied him for his close-
up. ALIVE Fashion Editor Jill Manoff and Art Director Reshma Chamberlin helped photographer Jay Baker get the perfect shots for the cover and story on p.64. Special thanks to Amanda Cook from the Four Seasons for allowing our crew to take over Cielo for the day. With its clean lines, floor-to-ceiling windows and unmatched view of Downtown St. Louis, the Hot List award-winning restaurant was the picture-perfect spot to capture St. Louis’ favorite athlete.

After researching all the top St. Louis arts and culture spots available to explore for free, Jennifer Dulin Wiley can’t wait to hit some of them up herself. A look at the city’s best health and fitness options rounded out her contribution to this year’s Hot List (p.66). Jennifer is a regular contributor to ALIVE, a promotional copywriter and marketing consultant for area businesses and the managing editor of national fine-art magazine Art Business News.
Writing about the city’s best pizza, beignets and burgers for this month’s Hot List (p.66) made contributing writer Natalie Kurz very, very hungry. Which proved counterproductive for her ongoing efforts to drop the excess baby weight from her son—who’s now almost 3 years old. Guess she can’t keep using that as an excuse anymore...

Jay Baker spent a lot of his time growing up in a darkroom printing pictures with his father. “It never occurred to me that I could make a living at this at the time, but I guess something just sunk in. Photography just came quite naturally to me.” Jay is a Kansas City area native who moved to St. Louis in 1995. He has been shooting with FK Studios since 1999. This month, Jay photographed cover boy Chris Carpenter (p.64).
“Shoot first. Ask questions later.” That’s the motto of photographer Brian Cummings. A creative director in a former life, Brian spent 15 years on photo sets directing shoots. “Photo shoots were the best part of my job. It was where all the energy was.” Realizing that photographers do have more fun, Brian took the plunge and started a journey into photography. “I need to create, whether it be through photography or a concert poster for a band you never heard of.” This month, Brian lends his skills to ALIVE’s “Hot List” feature (p.66). Currently, you can find Brian shooting away at Rob Grimm Photography (Rggphoto.com).

Open seven days a week until midnight, this shirtand-shoes-optional spot brings the look and feel of a festive, party beach replete with lounge chairs, live music and plenty of margarita and beer specials. There’s also a street-cart-style taco stand by the courts to enjoy fresh tacos on the sidelines.
Get Served
What would a beach party be without cold brews? Wave Taco offers happy hour specials daily, like $1 beers on Monday from 5pm-8pm, a $6 mini bucket on Saturday and tequila specials like a $4 beer with a shot of El Set reposado on Thursday. Friday offers one of the best deals in town with $5 all-you-candrink beer and margaritas from 4:30pm-6pm. And for those interested in volleyball games, leagues fill up fast—so sign up now. This is a beach party we definitely dig (1335 Convention Plaza, Downtown, 314.241.8226).

Post Office Square

hip to be square
Located in the heart of Downtown, Post Office Square attracts visitors with beautifully renovated buildings, urban living spaces, exclusive-to-STL shops and budget-friendly eateries. The core of this thriving district, the Old Post Office, was majestically restored in 2006 and provides the defining framework of the neighborhood. In April, a 30,000 square-foot open space was unveiled across from the building and the Old Post Office Plaza was born, further establishing the area as a destination neighborhood. The Thaxton Speakeasy You’d never guess while merely strolling by, but this recently renovated Art Deco events space serves as a swinging underground speakeasy on the weekends. Owners Peter Venezia and Kim Pitliangas have created a refreshingly different and unpretentious atmosphere for partygoers looking to try something out of the ordinary. For an authentic speakeasy experience, patrons must utter a secret password to a white-bearded bouncer through a metal door in a shady back alley to gain entry. That’s no jive, cool cat.

5 Reasons We Love Platinum
3 Must-Have Platinum Pieces
With shoppers seeking fine jewelry that will stand the test of time, platinum is at its peak.
1.
By Jill Manoff
It’s naturally gorgeous.
Platinum’s natural white luster provides a beautiful setting for diamonds and looks stunning when paired with other jewelry.
From Katy Perry in posh Neil Lane accessories at the 51st Annual
Grammy Awards to Penelope Cruz and Nicole Kidman in carats of Chopard at this year’s Oscars, it seems platinum has established itself as celebrities’ choice fine jewelry metal. Foregoing piles of trendy, over-the-top bling in favor of one or two pieces of statement platinum jewelry, the Hollywood set has been “going back to basics,” opting for quality over quantity and classic over flashy. Today, the masses are following Tinseltown’s lead by picking platinum as their accessory of choice. This season, shop smart; invest in a stunning, in vogue piece of platinum jewelry—and wear it for years to come.
2. It stands the test of time.
Platinum jewelry is a perfect choice for everyday wear. Its incredible density and weight make it more durable than other metals and provide high value for its price.
3. It’s always in style.
Wear to work or on a special occasion; platinum posts look equally chic for day and night. Four-carat Asscher Empress Stud Earrings available in Asscher, cushion, round or yellow radiant diamonds.
Stackable Rings
When worn solo, they say simple elegance; when with an entourage, thin platinum rings make a bold statement. Uternity Bands available in diamond and pink sapphire, diamond and ruby, and sapphire or round-brilliant diamond combinations.

A Classic Necklace
A literal “ring around your collar,” a platinum necklace, like this six-stone Asscher Cross Pendant (1.50 carats to 12 carats each), is the perfect finishing touch to most any evening ensemble.
4. The opportunities are endless.
The strongest of jewelry metals, platinum holds precious stones firmly and securely and allows for more design possibilities.
5. It’s the most bling for your buck.
Platinum does not wear away and decrease in volume like other metals, so your one-time investment is guaranteed for life.

Blast Fat Fast! New Vaser Lipo technology selectively slims with minimal downtime. By Sheniqua Faulkner
Fast Fact: In a 2008 survey of U.S. VASER Lipo physicians, 95 percent of respondents would recommend the VASER Lipo System to another physician or facility.
When diet and exercise aren’t enough to melt away stubborn love handles and jiggly thighs, women have turned to more high-tech solutions for targeted fat removal with treatments like liposuction and fat-melting injections. But recently a new ally on the fat-fighting front has entered the fray, a cutting-edge treatment called Vaser LipoSelection.
What makes this FDA-approved procedure so revolutionary is that it first breaks up fat before it is suctioned away, translating to much less downtime, bruising, swelling and pain than traditional liposuction techniques. Dr. Richard Moore, who treats hundreds of satisfied Vaser Lipo patients each year as the medical director of Clayton’s The Lifestyle Center, explains that “the Vaser LipoSelection process is not a fad treatment like many of the other treatments out there for reducing fat.” It’s fast becoming a favorite procedure for physicians because of its consistent results and minimal downtime and has been featured on almost every major news network, morning show and makeover show on TV.
How Vaser Lipo Works: Vaser Lipo is a selective technology that targets fat cells using the gentle power of ultrasound energy, the same type of energy used in ultrasonic tooth brushes and fetal ultrasound monitoring. With Vaser Lipo, that technology is harnessed to

break up and liquefy fatty tissue so that it can be gently suctioned away with minimal disruption of the surrounding tissue.
Why it’s Different: “Vaser Lipo is different from other fat removal and body-smoothing procedures because the selective nature of the treatment leaves blood vessels, connective tissue and nerves intact,” Dr. Moore says. The result is smoother, tighter skin with less downtime, swelling, bruising and pain. Most patients only need over-the-counter pain relievers following the procedure. Who it’s For: The best candidates for Vaser LipoSelection are
individuals who live healthy lifestyles, but have stubborn problem areas, such as abs, buttocks, thighs, neck or chest that don’t respond to diet and exercise.
Where to get it: “At The Lifestyle Center, we have a reputation for
providing excellent service at an affordable price,” says Dr. Moore. Finally, women can have a smooth, sexy silhouette with minimal pain and without breaking the bank.
For more info about Vaser Lipo and the other spa and medical services offered at The Lifestyle Center, call 314.863.5556 (7642 Forsyth Blvd., Clayton, thelifestylecenter.com).

Earth-Friendly “I Dos” A St. Louis couple plans a wedding that represents their love for each other and for the environment. By Kristin Stefek Brashares | Photos by Jon Koch Photography | Wedding planning by Chasley Bradbury of Cosmopolitan Events For Jessica Kingsborough and Kevin Navarro, planning a dream wedding meant more than having the perfect dress or a well-fitting tux; it also meant creating an eco-friendly celebration. From canvas tote bag party favors and a poster declaring the dangers of plastic bags to locally grown blooms and elegant, outdoorsy décor, this eco-conscious couple beautifully blended their passion for each other and the environment into a super-stylish, sustainable celebration.
The Couple: Jessica Kingsborough, 27, Social Services Director at Parc Provence, and Kevin Navarro, 34, Assistant Head of School at The College School. The Big Day: The ceremony was held on June 28, 2008 and featured an altar of arched pussy willow branches and soft-glowing candles that created an enchanted-forest feel in the First Unitarian Church in the Central West End. Chasley Bradbury of local event planning powerhouse Cosmopolitan Events worked side-by-side with Jessica to design the ceremony’s key touches and elements that made her “sustainable” dream wedding a reality while keeping the theme elegant. The couple’s dog, Seabiscuit, delivered the rings. The Dress: Jessica fell in love at first sight with her strapless Carolina Herrera gown from Saks (314.567.9200). She accented two bands of black lace that decorated the bodice and draped down the train with a black diamond necklace and ultra-comfy black Taryn Rose sandals. The bridesmaids donned specially ordered dark-plum Vera Wang dresses.
The Flowers: Designed by Botanicals Design Studio (314.772.7674), the bride’s bouquet featured ivory and green florals with dangling amaranthus, and the groom’s boutonniere consisted of twigs, leaves and berries.
The Reception: Shadows of uplit trees projected onto the ceiling and mismatched centerpieces of locally grown orchids channeled the outdoors and elegantly embellished the already stunning Coronado Ballroom. Party Arts (314.781.1400) decorated chairs and tables with specialty linens.
The Food: Steven Becker Fine Dining’s (314.367.4848) world-class chefs custommade a foie gras pâté first course in honor of Jessica’s favorite childhood dish from her time in the south of France, and a special salad celebrated the couple’s love for locally grown heirloom tomatoes. The Coronado recycled and composted as much as possible and donated extra food to a homeless shelter. For dessert, guests were treated to a scrumptious strawberryand-champagne cake and a gourmet coffee bar featuring espresso drinks, liquors, cheeses and chocolates to cap off the evening.

The Stationery: Custom-made, leafembellished save-thedate cards and invites designed by Cheree Berry Paper (314.533.6688) and printed with soy ink on recycled paper set the tone for the earth-friendly affair. The couple’s monogram mimicked the universal recycling logo. In lieu of a guest book, friends and family signed paper leaves and hung them on a tree before the ceremony.

Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter talks camaraderie, winning a World Series championship and overcoming obstacles. By Cristy Miller Photo by Jay Baker Sitting across from Chris Carpenter and his wife Alyson at Cielo restaurant in the Four Seasons Hotel, I hardly felt like I was interviewing an ace pitcher with a Cy Young Award and World Series Championship under his belt. His down-to-earth attitude and friendly demeanor made it easy to talk with him about everything, from the current team lineup to the string of injuries that have flecked his seven-year career with the St. Louis Cardinals. You could say that the New Hampshire-born pitcher, who broke into the majors in 1997 with the Toronto Blue Jays before signing with St. Louis in 2003, has had a rough go of it, struggling to stay healthy throughout the seasons—he’s only taken the mound a few times during the last two because of elbow surgery and was recently sidelined in April by a torn oblique muscle. But Chris remains one of the best pitchers in baseball; this right-handed ace, known for having a killer curveball, pitched his best year to date in ’05, achieving a 2.83 ERA (earned run average), the fifth best in the National League. The following year, Chris’ status as a top Cards pitcher was sealed when he shut out the Detroit Tigers in Game 3 of the World Series. After his cover photo shoot on a Monday morning in April, we chatted about his teammates, bullpen hazing and his proudest achievement to date. Cristy Miller: I know it’s still early in the
season, but the Cards seem to have a solid lineup and have been kickin’ butt. What do you think about the 2009 team? Chris Carpenter: I’m excited about our team. We have a core veteran group of guys that have been established in this league for a long time; Albert [Pujols], myself, Dennys Reyes, a new left-handed pitcher we acquired, Trever Miller. But then also you bring in young players, experience-wise, like [Rick] Ankiel, Chris Duncan and Skip Schumaker. You put all that young excitement back into the older players that have been around a long time, and it brings together a team that has a lot of energy. We’ve got good, talented players that love to play, and I think our starting staff is one of the best in the league. We have a chance to win. alivemag.com
CM: You mentioned the starting staff—let’s
talk about the pitchers in particular; who are the ones to watch this season? CC: To be honest with you, all of us have the ability to be really good. [Todd] Wellemeyer won 13 games last year, [Kyle] Lohse won 15 games, [Adam] Wainwright missed a few months and won 11 games, and [Joel] Pineiro has won a bunch of games in his career. I think at any given time, no matter who goes out there, every single night we have a chance to win. Everybody has shown they can pitch and have success in this league. CM: Speaking of Wainwright, when we interviewed him going into the ’07 season, he mentioned you as one of his biggest mentors. How would you describe your relationship with the younger pitchers? CC: If a younger player has a question and I have an answer, I’ll help him out. But just because you are a veteran in the game doesn’t mean you have all the answers. I’m still learning every day. Adam and I have had a good relationship since he first came up. I know he loves the game and loves to compete. I see a lot of myself in him, when I was younger. He’s obviously become a really good professional, and he’s going to be a quality pitcher in this league for a long time. CM: Are there any initiations or rites of pas-
sages for the rookies?
CC: One tradition is that we have the rookie
in the bullpen carry a pink bag or Barbie backpack with snacks, gum and seeds. We had [Kyle] McClellan last year drive the little scooter out to the bullpen with a pink bike helmet on. It’s the youngest guy in the bullpen who has to do that. I had to do the pink bag in the bullpen.
CM: You signed with the team prior to the 2003 season, but you didn’t get to pitch one game during your first season due to a torn labrum. I think St. Louis was definitely disappointed we didn’t get to see you pitch that year. Do you feel like the fans supported you, even through your string of injuries over the last few seasons?
CC: Absolutely. [The fans] love baseball and are super supportive. That’s the one thing they’ve done for me over the seven years I’ve been here. No matter what has happened with me, the ups and downs, they’ve continued to support me. There’s no question that the fans here are a lot better than other fans in the league. After we won the World Series [in 2006], fans would say “thank you” to me. We [Alyson] would be out at breakfast at First Watch and fans would come up to me say “thanks” and buy our breakfast. It’s just different here than anywhere else. CM: It’s definitely been a rollercoaster for you over your seven years as a Cardinal, only starting a few games in the ’07 and ’08 seasons. How does this affect you mentally? CC: At first it was hard, but I’ve gotten over it. I keep myself in good shape, and I do everything I can to keep myself on the field. I’ve come to the conclusion that injuries are a part of sports—people get hurt and it takes me a little while to deal with it when it happens, but then you move on and start focusing on getting better. But it’s hard, there’s no question that I want to go out and play. This is my life; this is what I’ve done since I was 8 years old. This is what I know; this is what I love doing. CM: Despite all your injuries, you’ve had many career highs as well. You won the National League Cy Young Award in 2005 (an honor given annually to the best pitcher in each league), you were voted into the 2006 All Star Game and won a World Series Championship. What do you consider your biggest achievement? CC: The World Series was probably the biggest highlight for all of us [his family], as much for her [his wife Alyson] as it was for me. She’s been with me since I was in the minor leagues and been there through every step and every up and down. And when we won the World Series, we were both crying and we had the kids [Sam, 6 ½ and Ava, 3 ½] with us. It was a pretty amazing moment.

WE LOVE THAT THERE are MORE SHOPPING AND FASHION DESTINATIONS HERE THAN MOST PEOPLE REALIZE. From the runway to the racks, St. Louis has become a hub of high fashion. Anna Sui, Missoni, Vivienne Tam and Diane von Furstenberg are just a handful of fashion’s top names that can currently be found in area boutiques—and the list just keeps growing. As the city establishes itself as a fashion capital, stores are expanding their offerings to include labels once exclusive to the coasts—and browsing the local shopping districts has never been more fun.
Best New Boutique: Ivy Hill
If you have yet to hear it through the ’vine, freshly planted Ivy Hill houses a garden of fabulous finds—think Ali Ro dresses, Free People separates and an array of fresh jewelry just waiting to be plucked. 304 N. Euclid Ave., Central West End, 314.367.7004.
Best Boutique: Valerie Mills

Best Women’s Boutique: Blush

Jefferson Ave., Kirkwood, 314.965.4411.

These specialists protect our air; make our water safe to drink; monitor the soil where farmers plant our food; beautify our neighborhoods, parks and nature reserves; and keep us safe from natural disasters. They also fabricate eco-friendly products and technologies that help us all lessen our impact on the earth. Experts in this area make the green by going green, and are expected to continue to do so into the next decade.
Why: Even in lean times, companies hire individuals who not only understand the latest computer technologies but more importantly, the proper way to implement them so that they best benefit a specific project or company. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, computer software engineers are expected to be among the fastestgrowing occupations through 2016. These tech-savvy pros don’t just keep businesses afloat in a rough economy; they help them prosper. Where To Go:

Memphis-Style Barbecue Heats Up Downtown St. Louis Smoking Joe’s Bar-Be-Que, Downtown’s new upscale BBQ hotspot, is the perfect summer stop-in. By Cristy Miller | Photo by Josh Monken
The beef brisket platter with sweet potato fries, coleslaw and baked beans.
Smoking Joe’s bar-be-que At first glance, you’d never guess that the latest addition to Downtown’s dining scene is a barbecue
restaurant. There’s a fireplace and artwork. There’s a swanky lounge and floor-to-ceiling windows. LCD TVs adorn the walls and there’s a full bar. But Smoking Joe’s is a tried-and-true barbecue joint with all the pulled, spicy or smoked offerings you’d find at other popular ’cue spots. And, who says corn on the cob can’t go with a cocktail, anyway? A Pioneer in the Neighborhood Located on Washington Avenue between 19th and 20th Streets, Smoking Joe’s is in the newly renovated Tudor Building and is one of the growing number of retail and restaurant businesses setting up shop in the multi-million dollar development. The restaurant, which occupies a prime corner space of the building, is the first full-scale restaurant to open in the new neighborhood—and it has convenient hours for city dwellers, serving until midnight Monday to Saturday. The block has come a long way—new 45-degree parking spaces and lots of storefront retail space have had a positive impact on the neighborhood. But it still has a long way to go, and I appreciate that this didn’t deter owner Joel Rozelle from opening his place. Smoked To Perfection The décor leans more upscale, but Joel keeps the food true to its laid-back Memphis roots. You order at the counter and your meal arrives in paper-lined basket trays. Meats are slow cooked and well prepared; my half chicken was delicate and moist and served atop a slice of Texas toast—I ordered it with a side of green beans and paid a little extra to swap the choice of potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans or corn on the cob for French fries, which were served semi-thick and crispy. Platters provide diners options like pulled pork and chicken, an amazingly tender beef brisket, turkey breast and sausage. The loin back ribs (a.k.a baby back ribs) are available in several portion sizes and are of a perfect tenderness that many chefs spend years hoping to achieve. And nothing says summer like al fresco dining—Smoking Joe’s recently put in a patio that expands onto the street, adding yet another reason to sup at this hot new destination this summer.

Sweet Sensation
Light and crisp: Franco’s Orange-Basil Tuile Bowls filled with berries and cream.
Whether you dine in or make at home, Franco’s deliciously simple French desserts will steal the show on your table. By Amy De La Hunt | Photo by Liz Reiff Sloan
Summertime calls for light, airy desserts, preferably low in calories and great with berries. In a word, summer calls for tuiles. These versatile cookies are strong enough to hold fillings yet melt-in-your mouth delicate and can be sweet or savory, flavored with lemon, chocolate, almond or sesame. And, as one of the seven basic types of French cookies, they’re almost obligatory on French menus.
No-Fuss French Franco meets the challenge with Orange-Basil Tuile Bowls filled with strawberries and cream. The Soulard restaurant’s seasonal dessert menu is a crash course in French treats like the upside-down classic, apple tarte tatin; white chocolate mousse and hazelnute crème anglaise layered into a chocolate terrine; and profiteroles, cream puffs with chocolate mousse and caramel glaze.
Kitchen Confidential Make your own light-as-air French cookie with strawberries and cream with this dessert recipe from Franco Executive Chef Matt Abeshouse.
Orange-Basil Tuile Bowls 1 pint strawberries, rinsed and stems removed 1/4 cup sugar 2/3 cup + 1 tbsp flour 1 tsp salt 6 egg whites 1 cup + 3 tbsp sugar 5 tbsp melted butter 1 tbsp Grand Marnier Zest of 1 orange 3 large basil leaves, very thinly sliced
{ where to eat }
franco Open since early 2007, Franco has quickly established itself as one of the city’s most talked-about (floating Chinese noodle ceiling) and most visited (for the hearty, contemporary French cuisine) restaurants. Franco’s up-and-coming Executive Chef Matt Abeshouse specializes in classic French techniques—his goal is to make veggies (fresh from nearby Soulard Market), foie gras and even sweetbreads approachable and fun. If you haven’t been to this spot lately, stop by and enjoy the newly opened patio, the extensive wine list and of course, the delicious French desserts (1535 S. Eighth St., Soulard, 314.436.2500).
Combine salt and flour in a small mixing bowl. In another bowl, combine egg whites with remaining sugar, melted butter, Grand Marnier and orange zest. Slowly whisk the dry ingredients into the wet until just combined. Add basil and let rest for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place a full-size Silpat mat on a baking sheet (or use a greased bakery pan liner). Spoon 2 tablespoons of batter onto the mat. Repeat, spacing the cookies 3 inches apart to allow for spreading during baking. With a small spatula, smooth each into a 4-inch circle, making sure to keep the same thickness all the way to the edge. Bake 8-10 minutes, until the edges turn golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool just enough to handle. With a small spatula, pick up a corner and lay cookie inside a small soup bowl. Carefully push the center so it forms to the shape of the bowl. Let cool, then remove from the bowl. To serve: Wash 1 pint of strawberries and trim off the stems. Toss them with 1/4 cup sugar. Set aside for at least 1 hour. If desired, stir in 1/4 cup Grand Marnier. Just before serving, spoon berries into tuile bowls and top with crème anglaise or whipped cream.

THE PARTY:
For six weeks, over thirty St. Louis bartenders competed in an online battle to win the most votes by readers and win one of six spots at the ALIVE Bartender Contest. The top six bartenders, Herbie’s Heather Dodderer, The Pepper Lounge’s Lauren Zoanetti, Flamingo Bowl’s Roy Richardson, Cielo’s Mike Cook, Erney’s 32 Michelle Sanchez and Ari’s Richard Jennings then faced off in an “Iron Chef”-style competition, caught on camera by Gebbs Total Video, at Blu Cityspaces for the first leg of the contest. Celebrity judges Kevin Johnson, Katie Becker, Allyson Mace, Josh Roland and Cristy Miller watched as the bartenders poured-off through three rounds, creating drinks using Pearl Vodka, Blue Moon, Red Bull and an array of fun ingredients, including ginger, which helped Michelle Sanchez take top ranking, giving her a $100 advantage at the final round. The Raymond Experience’s Pamela Raymond chatted with Gilberto Pinela and Dwight Carter while onlookers Julie Zubar and Jamie Kelly were also sighted in the crowd.
