from the publishing team

W

e have always been passionate about being healthy, staying active and delivering our readers more ways to care for their bodies and minds in St. Louis. When we first began ALIVE, we started the magazine with the hope of providing information on healthy eating, fun ways to workout and ways to live a happy and balanced life. Although our editorial mission has expanded over the last seven years, we are happy to return to our roots and launch our first Health Issue. Writer Matt Sorrell scouted area parks, trails, gyms and fitness centers to bring you over 25 ways to be active in St. Louis right now. From marathons to bike trails to kickball leagues, there are a variety of ways to get in shape and get moving this summer. We hope you find it to be not only a great tool for inspiration and motivation, but also as a guide to help protect and maintain your health today. Sometimes the biggest hurdle to achieving any fitness or exercise goal is the mental aspect. Whether you’re trying to lose 25 pounds or trying to build up to running 25 miles, being mentally tough is just as important as being physically ready. This issue profiles three St. Louis triathletes who approached the challenge of completing a triathlon head-on and shares what they do to stay motivated. With regard to food and health, we happen to think the food we eat, the farms that food comes from and the environment that affects all of the above are some of the most critical issues today regarding not only our personal health, but the health of our entire community. That’s why we decided that Jean Ponzi was the perfect person to feature in our “Archetypes” interview this month. We hope that Jean and the work she does will inspire you to plant an herb garden or begin to recycle so that together as a community, we can continue to improve and protect our health by improving and protecting the health of our environment. We also invite you to check out our new media property ALIVEMag.com where we hope to become your resource on where to go, what to do and how stay active in St. Louis.

CARRIE IGGULDEN

An avid fitness runner who has been known to do some cycling on occasion, Matt was inspired by all of the triathletes he talked with for this issue’s “Try a Tri” (p. 48), though not enough to commit to taking the triathlon plunge himself anytime soon. When he’s not pounding the pavement around Richmond Heights, Matt spends his time at home with his wife, Beth, and their assorted dogs and cats.

Carrie Iggulden, 24, graduated in 2009 from Missouri State University with a BFA in Photography and a minor in Art History. Last June, she returned home to St. Louis to pursue exciting photography opportunities. While freelancing for ALIVE, Jon Koch Photography and Blacktie-St. Louis, Carrie works full time as a Photography Specialist. Carrie’s work will be on display at Mudhouse in Springfield June 1-August 1, and she hopes to have her work featured at many other galleries in St. Louis this summer.

JENNIFER SILVERBERG

Wesley’s doppleganger is no longer Javier Bardem due to a recent haircut. Graduating from the SI Newhouse School of Communication at Syracuse University, he has since lived and worked in many cities such as London, Boston, LA and NYC. His most recent assignment for ALIVE was a portrait of the green activist and KDHX radio host, Jean Ponzi (p. 120), photographed at the Earthways center in Grand Center. “After working in film, I learned to make the background more important than the foreground. Your subjects will always be beautiful, but it’s their environment that often need the most work,” says Wesley.

Exploring St. Louis restaurants has become a favorite pastime for photographer Jennifer Silverberg. Whether photographing or dining, St. Louis’ ever-growing food scene has something for everyone. For this issue, she visited South Grand’s newest tapas restaurant & bar, Mojo (p. 26). It’s hot out; go to Mojo and have some sangria. And to see more of Jennifer’s photographs, maybe while sipping that sangria, go to jennifersilverberg. blogspot.com.

In this presentation, four visual artists share their unique view of the ordinary and the extraordinary. Beth Jatcko uses mixed media to create topographic landscapes that can be interpreted as either a far-off satellite views or a microscopic inspections. Sculptor Nick Lang uses a variety of materials to express personal narratives and explore how humans share common bonds. Eric Nichols, a sculptor, designer and commissioned public installation artist, currently works in mixed media on paper, and layers two- and three-dimensional imagery. Photographic artist Curt von Diest utilizes old-world craftsmanship and modern digital techniques to reveal that even the most everyday objects have simple beauty. In its Muny premiere, this Broadway musical tells many sides of this historical moment that the Hollywood blockbuster didn’t. En route to America to fulfill dreams and lead what they hoped would be better lives, more than 2,000 passengers boarded the luxuriously grand RMS Titanic. Their high spirits crumble when disaster strikes on that fateful, freezing night when an iceberg collision sinks the ship the whole world called “unsinkable.” Cost: Free-$66. ERIK SPEHN: TAPE DRAWINGS Through September 18, The Sheldon Art Galleries

For the last three years, Erik Spehn has used masking tape to create visually stunning art; he would apply tape strips to the canvas, paint over them, then peel them off, tossing the used tape once his works were complete. Over time, Spehn recognized that the discarded tape could be used to create a new body of work. In this collection, exhibited for the first time at The Sheldon, Spehn sheds light on the working process by which most of his art comes to life. Miso Hungry For More

Shop Talk Caravan Girl Formerly behind Maplewood’s French Twist, interior design expert Jenny Baca’s latest venture caters to the vintage lover. Housed in the same building as longstanding knitwear company Skif International, Baca set up her shop—JIPSI, which sells everything from vintage clothing and antiques to decades-old furniture she paints and often reupholsters—on the Hill in April (2008 Marconi Ave., 314.303.5499).

> To call Miso on Meramec in Clayton a must-visit destination for sushi and a hot scene is an understatement. Sure, they serve it, but it was almost ten years ago in St. Louis that they started it—the sushi with a scene trend. The concept combined fresh sushi with a chic downstairs lounge where you could catch DJs spinning nightly and order a saketini or cocktail. Still going strong, Miso continues to evolve—whether it’s mixing up the nightlife scene with themed nights and hot drink specials or changing up its menu. Recently, Miso not only added new menu items and lunch service, but it also expanded its first floor space, adding more dining space and fittingly chic bamboo-esque chairs and tables. The new space is a breath of fresh air—as are the new “Miso Revolution” rolls, a dozen options that include a satisfying Godzilla roll with smoked salmon, unagi, masago and cream cheese and the Magic Mushroom with fresh salmon, enoki mushrooms and topped with chile aioli. And watch the chefs at work when you order the Papasan roll: spicy snow crab, cucumber and avocado topped with striped bass and a jalapeno wafer with chile aioli, rolled then seared with a blow torch. Talk about a hotspot (16 N. Meramec Ave., Clayton, 314.863.7888).

Bar Hop at The Pour house A new bar and grill is now open in the space that previously housed Wicked Fresh Subs in the Tudor Building. The Pour House features classic pub fare like chicken wings, chili dogs and sandwiches, a great beer selection and plenty of games from shuffleboard to darts and six large TVs (1933 Washington Ave., 314.241.5999).

The expansive, globally inspired tapas and fresh fruit cocktails carry the charm at this new South Grand locale. By Cristy Miller | Photos by jennifer silverberg

> Maybe it was the orange-ginger salmon gravlox or the lamb sliders with apricot— or the ginger caipiroska cocktail—but something charmed my taste buds on my first visit to Mojo. Located in the space at South Grand and Arsenal that once housed Erato Wine Bar and then Parkside Lounge, Mojo has a low-key vibe and a something-for-everyone menu of small plates, sandwiches and fresh-fruit concocted spirits. Globally Inspired Tapas The broad menu pulls its influences from around the globe; Latin, Caribbean and even classic American ingredients, herbs and spices are present throughout. Among the twenty-plus tapas items, Chef Erhard rounds out the menu with a few dishes that are a little less adventurous, but that are enjoyable all the same. The mixed green salad, while small, was satisfying with pine nuts and carrots and currants tossed with a light orange sherry vinaigrette. The chopped tomato salad had a nice Mediterranean touch with mozzarella and pesto with balsamic vinaigrette. Entrées include well-prepared tagliatelle; the pasta was tender and light with sautéed chicken in a thyme butter sauce, but my favorite was the smoked salmon club, a mini version of the classic with hot smoked salmon and a zesty lemon pepper aioli, served on a pretzel bun.

French fries—who said they don’t go together? I enjoyed the wild mushroom flatbread with creamy goat cheese and truffle oil one evening and ordered it with the shrimp with lime, two skewers with mini shrimp delicately cooked and served over rice. But these pairings and the overall span of the menu isn’t so unexpected once you know a little bit about the chef. Chef and Owner Eric Erhard has had a hand in several local restaurants, many as varied as his own menu at Mojo. Stints at the departed Café Mira and Crazy Fish and more recently, at the respected Annie Gunn’s and Harvest and Mike Johnson’s tapas ventures, Momos and Boogaloo are evident in Chef Erhard’s menu and he ties together dishes like salt cod and potato cakes, jerk chicken skewers and roasted pork empanadas effortlessly.

There’s an effortless mix of hustle-and-bustle and laidback ease that I really enjoy about Downtown Clayton. During the day, businesspeople rush from their offices to grab lunch and run errands. After dark, friends meet up to watch their team at a boisterous bar or groove to live music at a chic lounge. There’s also a more subdued side of Clayton where co-workers unwind with happy hour cocktails and couples enjoy romantic dinners al fresco. On the weekends, families happily stroll the Clayton Farmer’s Market, indulge in brunch or enjoy one of the many special events happening in Clayton during the summer months. It’s this combination of urban action and suburban relaxation that makes Downtown Clayton a Hot Block standout.

Where I Live

City Couple at Heart

When it came time to become a homeowner, Rachel Hadfield faced a tough decision. “When I was ready to buy, I looked at houses, but my heart was in the city. I looked at a lot of the loft buildings before deciding on The Syndicate. I think what sold me were the amenities: the 9th floor deck, rooftop balcony, the large gym, the art galleries and especially the art workspace. What other building has a large common area where you can go and do messy things— and it’s perfectly fine? I loved that.”

Located in the Old Post Office District, The Syndicate is within walking distance of all

the great features of Downtown. “Being so close to Culinaria is great. If it’s raining or cold, Drew and I have a connection through the 9th Street Garage—we never even have to step foot outside! Also, being so close to the Post Office Plaza, there are so many great things going on over there in the summertime: live music, movie nights, art shows and the new farmers’ market.”

Incredible Views Included

In addition to gourmet kitchens, spacious walk-in closets and open floorplans, The Syndicate offers stunning city scenes with large, “Chicago-style” windows. “The view is our favorite thing for sure. We have a corner unit and the view is just spectacular.”

Diversity: The Spice of Life

“The Syndicate is a great community. It’s eclectic! There are artists, students, young professionals, empty nesters, kids, babies, big dogs, small dogs—everyone! But what we love the most is how friendly most everyone is. There’s always a smile and a ‘hello’ in the elevator. The sense that your neighbors know who you are, are watching out for you and want to be your friend is really great. Plus, my parents live in the building!”

To The Heart of It Author Emily Giffin talks about creating complex characters, writing and what’s at the heart of her latest book. Interviewed by Elizabeth Tucker New York Times bestselling author Emily Giffin may have five books under her belt, been called “a modern-day Jane Austen” and have a movie in the works based on one of her books, but when I chatted with her over the phone before her appearance at Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis, it felt less like an interview and more like a conversation between friends.

ALIVE: Your characters are complex and completely relatable. I know that while I’m reading your books, although a character doesn’t always do the right or best thing, I can empathize with them. What’s the secret to writing these characters in such a real, relatable way? Emily Giffin: I spend a lot of time on character development. I really get to know my characters and that allows me to have freedom with them so that they can do surprising things while still being themselves. It sounds funny, but I feel like my characters become separate from me at some point in the process. So when someone asks me, “Why did you make Darcy do this or why did Valerie react this way?” I want to respond with, “I didn’t make Darcy do anything. Darcy decided for herself.” ALIVE: What’s your writing process? EG: My writing is very character-driven and

organic. With this latest book, Heart of the Matter, I wanted to explore how one moment can change everything. And I knew I wanted to explore two very different mothers. So the premise comes first, then the characters. Then I come up with their back stories—who they are, what their families are like and eventually after that, the relationships form. The relationships drive the plot. I have a very vague sense of beginning, middle and end when I first start writing. When I sit down, it all unfolds and honestly, as I write, I don’t know what is going to happen either. ALIVE: Your latest novel, Heart of the Matter,

explores serious themes of marriage, infidelity, and ultimately, forgiveness. Why the title Heart of the Matter? EG: I wasn’t sure what this book was going to be 30 ALIVE STL JUly 2010

about when I first started it. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be about true love or being true to yourself. Or compassion, trust or friendship. But what ultimately emerged was forgiveness. It goes along with empathy—it’s a lot easier to forgive someone if you can see something from their point of view. For me it was a journey of discovering that forgiveness really was the heart of the matter. ALIVE: Your first book, Something Borrowed, is cur-

rently being made into a movie starring Kate Hudson, John Krasinski and Ginnifer Goodwin (2011 release date). Tell me about that whole experience. EG: Having a movie made was much of a surprise. I didn’t expect to be involved, but I ended up bonding with the producer and director, so I’ve been really into the whole process. They’ve been great, nice people. At one point, I was the person arguing that something should not be the same as it was in the book. I was like, “That can change!” and they were all about keeping it true to the book.

I think they nailed the cast. And I am shamelessly into celebrities, subscriber of US Weekly, you name it! I have a huge crush on John Krasinski, which consequently means I know him the least. I’ve had a lot of exchange with Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson but whenever John comes around I am like, “Hi. I am really honored that you are playing this part.” I become this weird, formal person. But overall, I’m not disappointed about anything. The fact that my book tour is overlapping with the filming of the movie makes life pretty crazy right now, but I was telling my cousin the other day that my life is really boring 90 percent of the time. For more information about Emily Giffin and her new book, Heart of the Matter, log on to emilygiffin.com.

To say that Emily is down-to-earth is an understatement, and I quickly learned how this sassy, smart and genuinely personable woman is able to write such page-turning, complex and relatable characters—because she’s so completely real herself, even telling me she mistakenly ate a Greek salad with onions just before she headed to an event. A big fan of hers for many years, I was excited to get the opportunity to discuss book themes, creating her characters and her new book, Heart of the Matter.

Suit Yourself! Three summer suit styles to try right now.

> Not since the ’80s “power suit” era have so many designers been excited about sets. From the borderline-masculine pant suits at Chloé (in white) and Christopher Kane (in black) to a slew of new, feminine takes (Versace paired a box-shaped jacket with a matching tweed mini; Valentino’s twin pieces were sheer chiffon, printed with black orchids), two-pieces are undeniably a top trend for SS10. This season, stock up on lightweight, ladies-only suits in innovative shapes and fabrics. Wear one style to work, another on the weekend; wherever you go, you’ll have no choice but to look put-together. A no-fail outfit? Now that’s powerful.

Go Green The season’s most covetable gemstone. By Jill Manoff | Photos by Curt parker > If the last time you sported anything of color was while wearing your team uniform in high school, there’s a new mandatory reason to make an exception to your must-blend rule (what’s that about, anyway?); emeralds are one of the hottest trends in fine jewelry, and everyone from Carrie Underwood to Angelina Jolie is going green. A covetable gemstone since ancient times, a fine emerald is often categorized as more valuable than a high-quality diamond of the same carat weight, and is a much less expected option to wear or give as a gift. This season, liven up a simple black dress (you know you have plenty) with a classic, statement-making emerald. Not only will you wear the investment piece for years to come, you’ll score points with your lineup of daring, fashion-forward friends—and it’s always nice to feel like part of the team (Curt Parker Jewelers, 10192 Conway Rd., Frontenac, 314. 989.9909).

The Light Stuff Schnucks Cooks has created a delicious and easy summer recipe that’s light in calories and loaded with flavor. By Stephanie Kratschmer

In only 35 minutes, you can easily prepare this succulent Southwestern-style turkey breast tenderloin, sprinkled with a spicy ancho rub and surrounded with fresh bell peppers and sweet onions—all for only 300 calories a serving. This delicious dish is as satisfying as it is easy, leaving you plenty of time to lounge by the pool. And you’ll still look great in your bikini.

Southwest Turkey Tenderloin (Serves 4)

WHAT YOU NEED: • 1 package (about 1 1/2 pounds) fresh turkey breast tenderloins • 2 tablespoons Culinaria Southwest ancho sear-n-crust rub • Schnucks nonstick cooking spray • 2 large poblano chile peppers, trimmed, cut in half and seeded • 1 large red, yellow or orange bell pepper, trimmed, cut in half and seeded • 1 large sweet onion, cut through root end into 1/2-inch wedges • 2 tablespoons Culinaria Arbequina extra virgin olive oil WHAT TO DO:

1. Place tenderloins on 12-inch

2. Preheat oven to 375°F. For easier clean-up, line largerimmed baking pan with foil. Lightly spray foil with cooking spray. Arrange poblano peppers, onion and bell pepper in single layer on foil. Bake 18 to 20 minutes or until edges of onion begin to brown and vegetables are tender. Transfer vegetables to cutting board; when cool enough to handle, cut into 1/2-inch pieces. Place vegetables on serving platter; toss with oil and keep warm.

3. Meanwhile, preheat grill pan over medium heat 2 to 3 minutes or prepare outdoor grill for direct grilling over medium heat. Cook tenderloins, covered, 14 to 16 minutes or until turkey loses its pink color throughout and internal temperature reaches 165°F, turning tenderloins to brown all sides. Transfer tenderloins to cutting board; let stand 5 minutes before cutting into 1/2-inch-thick slices. Arrange turkey over vegetables to serve.

Frei Brothers reserve Sauvignon Blanc Flavors that are fresh, crisp and light are the perfect combination for any summertime meal—and those flavors are exactly what the 2007 Frei Brothers Sauvignon Blanc delivers. With notes of lemongrass, citrus peel and vibrant bursts of passion fruit, this wine’s lively flavor aptly stands up to the bold Southwest heat of this dish. Seeking a low-oak influence in the end product, the expert winemakers at Frei Brothers only age half of this wine’s grapes in previously used French oak barrels for two months, resulting in a very subtle oak flavor. Heralded as a great summertime wine, Frei Brothers’ medium-bodied Sauvignon Blanc is a refreshing choice throughout the sunny season ($18.49 for a 25.4 oz. bottle at Schnucks).

sheet of aluminum foil. Sprinkle both sides of tenderloins with rub, pressing so that it adheres. Fold foil over tenderloins and let stand at room temperature 30 minutes.

The 2008 Russian River Sauvignon Blanc’s lively acidity is complemented with aromas of citrus, melon, and fresh cut grass with hints of vanilla and cream. The aromas extend through to the palate and culminate in a crisp, light enduring finish.

Try a Tri Three St. Louis triathletes share why they love competing in this popular swim, bike and run challenge. By matt sorrell | photos by carrie iggulden

From its humble beginnings on the beaches of California and Hawaii—the triathlon, that crazy combination of swimming, biking and running—has become one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. Membership in USA Triathlon, the sport’s national organization, has increased from just under 16,000 in 1993 to more than 107,000 in 2008. And to cement its legitimacy, the sport has been an Olympic event since 2000. Once these races were solely the purview of extreme athletes. Tris were originally a grueling amalgamation of a 2.4 mile open-water ocean swim, more than 100 miles of road-race cycling, and capped off by a marathon run. But now there are triathlons of all distances and for all levels of athletes. Though not exactly known for its beaches, the St. Louis area is becoming a hotbed of triathlon activity. The metro area now plays host to several triathlons annually, like the Tour de Kirkwood, Innsbrook Adventure Max and Big Shark New Town triathlons, and fosters a competitive, supportive community of athletes who like to train hard and race even harder. Here are three area triathletes who are the embodiment of that community.

Mary Czarnecki >Already a fitness buff, Mary was prompted to try a tri by her cousin. Her first race was Tour de Kirkwood, and she took third in her age group; in her next race, she got third overall. She’s completed more than 10 tris since. Besides the fitness, she enjoys the social part of training for a triathlon. “When you ride with people for 70 or 80 miles, you get to know them pretty well.”

{The Rundown}

Kristin Moore >A friend encouraged Kristin to buddyup and attempt a triathlon with her in 2001, and after that first race, Kristin was “totally hooked,” and has lost count of how many tris she’s done since. Her favorite distance? The 1/2 Ironman. She especially appreciates how the sport makes use of both the athletic and analytical sides of her personality.

“Our staff and speakers from other agencies also teach life skills classes that address health, relaxation, budgeting and money management, spirituality, recreation, arts and crafts,” says Weingarth. Children’s programming includes preschool and a four-day after-school program where youngsters have access to computers, tutors and homework help. Children’s Advocates assist mothers with obtaining the necessary records to enroll their children in new schools, locating affordable day care and exploring sources of support for children with special needs. The Lydia’s House staff also provides educational, cultural and recreational activities for children during school and summer breaks.

In 1994, four St. Louis women recognized the need for longer-term, transitional housing for women suffering abuse, and a year later, Lydia’s House was formally established as a 501(c) (3) not-forprofit. “We offer women and their children safe, confidentially located and fully furnished apartments that they can choose to live in for up to two years,” says Lisa Weingarth, Development Director at Lydia’s House. “We also surround our women and children with options for services, including personal advocacy, support groups, spiritual support, economic literacy, community and family activities and access to community resources.” This year, the organization commemorates its 15-year anniversary. Each day at Lydia’s House, Women’s and Children’s Advocates help survivors with challenges such as locating housing, acquiring education or job training, finding employment, obtaining an order of protection, securing a divorce, establishing custody arrangements or immigration status, accessing health-care needs and maintaining personal safety.

GET INVOLVED

Help Lydia’s House by organizing a donation drive for items on the organization’s Wish List or hold an event to benefit the organization at your home

or workplace. Or, as Weingarth suggests, consider hosting a dinner party at your home and requesting that friends make a donation to Lydia’s House as a part of your party. “We are fortunate to have a wide variety of volunteers ranging from individuals who assist with the after-school program and child care, fundraising, community outreach and board membership, to those who clean and decorate apartments, do yard work and gardening, make repairs or complement the Lydia’s House staff by providing music, arts, writing and photography classes,” says Weingarth. “Some people think that our work here must be dreary, but really, it is quite the contrary,” says Weingarth. “The women that live at Lydia’s House work very hard to rebuild their shattered lives, and I feel blessed to work among the transformation, the metamorphosis, that occurs here at Lydia’s House every day.” For more information on how you can get involved with Lydia’s House, log on to lydiashouse.org. {Do Good}

RECYCLE FOR LYDIA’S HOUSE Is your corporation, business or family upgrading to new cell phones? Send the old ones to Lydia’s House, which then sends the phones to a national organization for recycling. For their efforts, the recycling company sends Lydia’s House a donation. Your kind gesture not only assists Lydia’s House with fundraising, but also helps the environment by keeping electronics out of our landfills. Double good deed!

>Last year alone, nearly 20,000 women in St. Louis received help from a local domestic violence program. And with harrowing statistics that say that one in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime, these programs are vitally necessary to help women and their children escape their abusers and get the medical, legal and other resources they need. Most emergency domestic violence shelters provide 30 to 90 days of safety for women and children, which is often not enough time for families to secure a safe, permanent living solution.

INVEST IN A BETTER FUTURE Tools for financing your higher education From deciphering intimidating federal forms to meeting stringent deadlines, figuring out how to finance your education can be daunting, whether you’re heading to college for the first time or returning after time away.

SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY

Regardless of what area of study you choose or where you attend, nearly every institution of higher education offers financial aid counselors who can help answer questions and ease confusion every step of the way. Kate Goedde, Coordinator for New Students and Outreach at Saint Louis University, knows that the process can be overwhelming and encourages students to speak up and ask questions. “Don’t be intimidated,” she says. “I can’t tell you how many times students apologize for having too many questions, but they really shouldn’t. This is our job, and we’re happy to answer questions.” After years of answering students’ financial aid questions, among others, she says there are four avenues to funding higher education that every student should explore.

Scholarships Goedde notes that scholarships are one of the best forms of financing your education, because they do not have to be repaid. Students typically receive scholarships in recognition of academic ability, special skills or talent. Scholarships can also be awarded based on the student’s area of study, community service, ethnicity, religious background or other criteria. File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

By completing the FAFSA, you may become eligible for needbased aid. This aid can be awarded in two forms: grants or loans. Grants can be awarded from the federal or state government or the institution. Loans are another great option to lower your outof-pocket expense. Student loans are financed through the federal government and can be interest free or carry very low interest rates while you are completing your degree. Goedde encourages students to verify institutional deadlines before submitting their FASFA. You can still complete a FASFA for the 2010-2011 academic year at fasfa.gov.

Outside Sources These are usually funds that you or your family

contributes. Perhaps you or your family has contributed to a special savings account to fund your tuition, or maybe your current employer will pay part of all of your tuition expenses as part of their employee benefits package. Regardless, money from outside sources is another ideal financing option because it typically does not have to be repaid.

Private Loans Private/Alternative loans can also help cover

expenses not covered by the above sources. These loans would be in the student’s name and may require a credit-worthy co-signer. The interest rates on these loans vary during the time the student is completing the degree. Goedde notes that it is important to speak directly with your financial aid counselor in order to make sure you have maximized all other sources of aid before pursuing a private loan.

TENNIS MEGASTAR AND FASHIONISTA VENUS WILLIAMS BARES ALL ON WINNING, LOSING AND BELIEVING IN YOUR DREAMS.

On the tennis court, Venus Williams has never been one to do things the ordinary way (case in point: the “bare-all” lace corseted tennis dress she sported at the 2010 French Open). And, from the looks of her recent offthe-court endeavors—a new athlete-inspired book, the expansion of her design firm, V Starr Interiors, and new heights for her sporty clothing label, EleVen—she’s not about to start now. The first African-American ever to reach the No. 1 ranking as a professional in men’s or women’s tennis, Williams was already turning heads at age 14, when she exploded into the professional tennis scene and beat the No. 50 player in the world in her very first match. Williams’ doubles pairings and rivaled matchups with sister, Serena, have kept the tennis world abuzz to this day, as the bold, sassy and undeniably sexy duo continue to playfully challenge the game’s stodgy status quo. Seven Grand Slam singles championships and three Olympic Gold Medals later, Williams is still operating with the same, fierce drive and anything-goes attitude with which she started. And even though Williams is channeling this same energy to reach new heights outside the tennis court, her new book Come to Win clearly states: She’s not retiring anytime soon! With just one day back in her Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., home following the French Open before jet setting to London to begin training for Wimbledon (She’ll hit St. Louis July 10 for a match against the St. Louis Aces and a signing at Leftbank Books), the stylish Williams slowed down a pace to chat with ALIVE, proving that she’s not afraid to “bare it all” in more ways than one.

ALIVE: You’ve said before that Compton, Calif., where you grew up, isn’t exactly the most likely place to breed tennis stars. How did you make it happen? Venus Williams: I started tennis when I was four, so it’s always been a lifestyle for me. I don’t even remember the first time I picked up a racquet. I practiced at least five hours a day, every single day of the year from a really young age. I was good at it, too, so that definitely helped. My parents always told me I would be at the top of the ranks. That was the whole philosophy I was taught growing up; It was never really a question. ALIVE: What are some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way? VW: Always be positive and know that you have to put the work in. Do something that you love, and most importantly, always believe in yourself– never doubt. That’s not always easy, I know. It’s a work- in-progress for me. ALIVE: What’s it like to have your parents as coaches?

together with your investment in the Miami Dolphins [the sisters became limited ownership partners in the team in August of 2009]. How do you balance that fine line between sisterhood and professional rivalry? VW: When we play the match, we play the match, and we don’t take what happens off the court. It’s just that simple. When we’re not on the court, we love to laugh, gossip, shop … just regular things that sisters do. She’s a great person and a great sister. I know I can always rely on her, and she’s always with me no matter how far away she is. ALIVE: Both of you are known as much for your tennis careers as you are for your personal style, and your recent outfit at the French Open certainly turned some heads. What do you want your style to say about you? VW: It’s fun, classic and very feminine, like me. I like to be able to do things that haven’t been done before, that are unique, but that you can also wear 10 years from now, no problem. It’s about exploring new boundaries on the court–like wearing jewelry, or having Dianne Von Furstenberg design my Wimbledon dress (before high fashion designers were really doing athletic wear). I did lace at the French Open this year because it had never been done in a tennis dress, and I’m happy I did. ALIVE: Many would call you fearless in your fashion choices. What would you say to the naysayers out there? VW: You’re right! I am fearless. I try whatever I dream up, and I go for it–that’s what makes it fun. There have been a lot of naysayers, but theoretically I’m not even supposed to be playing professional tennis. Where I’m from, nobody really does, so I’ve already beaten the odds. ALIVE: How do you keep it all in perspective, even when you’re not having your best match? VW: You can’t judge yourself by the downs. You can’t even judge yourself by your last shot. If there are bad plays, you can’t assume the next one is going to be bad, too. It’s easy to do that sometimes. You just really have to live in the moment and believe that you can do better. And know that you can’t believe in the person across the net more than yourself. ALIVE: In your “spare time,” you’re the owner of two businesses—V Starr Interiors and EleVen designer clothing line [Venus earned her degree in fashion design from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in 2007]. Where did you get your entrepreneurial mindset? VW: Definitely from my dad. He always taught us to work for ourselves. Thankfully with tennis you do work for yourself, and now I’m my own boss in the business world as well. The best part is being able to have the creative direction and freedom, but it takes some serious time to really make it work.

VW: They’re great coaches, and lucky for me, they know what they’re doing. They’re my parents, and I respect them as my parents and as my coaches. I don’t have any problems separating the two.

ALIVE: What’s the story behind the name EleVen, and what do you currently have in the works for the label?

ALIVE: You and your sister, Serena, seem super close—competing with each other and against each other, and most recently going into business

VW: Eleven is a good number—it was part of my address growing up in Compton, and it represents the best of the best, because people always say,

one out of 10, but it's an 11. So you can be more than your best in EleVen. The line is about trying to push the envelope on the court. I’m working to bring fun patterns and zippers and other things I like onto the court with the line. This whole year has been about the illusion of bare skin, and even though I said recently I wouldn’t do anymore, (giggles) I probably will. ALIVE: Many of the lessons you’ve learned from tennis—learning to lose, putting in the work, pushing yourself to the limit—that you now apply to business are big reasons why you decided to write your first book, Come to Win.

HERE HAVE BEEN A LOT OF NAYSAYERS, BUT THEORETICALLY I’M NOT EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE PLAYING PROFESSIONAL TENNIS. WHERE I’M FROM, NOBODY REALLY DOES, SO I’VE ALREADY BEATEN THE ODDS. VW: There are so many lessons in sports that can be applied to business. From the experiences I’ve had across the board, on the court and off the court, I’ve used the lessons I’ve learned in tennis to be successful. So I started thinking about other people in sports and how they incorporated sports lessons into the rest of their lives, and I felt it was an important lesson worth sharing with others. ALIVE: You had the chance to interview a lot of really inspiring people for the book—Bill Clinton, Condoleezza Rice, Vera Wang and Phil Knight, among others. What was it like to have such candid conversations with such an influential group? VW: I was so nervous to do all the interviews, especially Condoleezza Rice because she’s someone I’ve always looked up to. Everyone is so busy, and I felt so lucky to be able to work with so many smart, successful people on

alivemag.com

this. After I got over the initial jitters, it was really fun actually! It took a lot of time and effort, but it was a really interesting project that taught me a lot from people who are at the top of their fields. ALIVE: You’ll be in St. Louis on July 10 to promote the book and play with the St. Louis Aces, where you’ll do tennis clinics with local kids after matches. It must be really rewarding to be able to give back to kids who love tennis. VW: It is. I love seeing the kids hit and have a great time and giving them pointers and encouraging them. I try to keep it pretty simple, and always talk about the things that I didn’t do right, so hopefully they can learn. Basically, I make fun of myself, and they laugh. It works. ALIVE: Gender equality is a cause that began with your tennis career but will likely follow you long after. Why this cause, and what have you done most recently to support it? VW: Tennis is the largest sport in the world that features female competitors, so I’ve always felt a responsibility to help empower the females that follow us. I worked with the WTA to develop a partnership with UNESCO (a UN-affiliate organization) that targets global gender equality concerns and now serve as the founding ambassador, helping to recruit other tennis players to participate and identifying projects around the world. We’re in our third year of the partnership, and we now support programs in over 25 countries. ALIVE: You seem like someone who has it all. What would you say to those who say you can’t have it all? VW: You can always have more. I’ve been blessed with a supportive family and the opportunity to make a living playing a sport that I love. I want to win every Grand Slam, I want to be No. 1 and win another Olympic gold medal in singles and doubles, but these things don’t always happen. One of the best things about what I do is setting new goals and pursuing them with everything I’ve got.

Get Active! 25 ways to get in shape, get outdoors and slim down in St. Louis this summer. By Matt Sorrell

Explore the 17 miles of trails at Castlewood State Park.

From hiking trails to running groups to early morning bootcamps, St. Louis has a slew of ways to get—and stay—active. All it takes is a little motivation and know-how on where to go and what to do. And whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or fitness newbie, there’s a workout or race out there for you. Check out our list of ways to get moving—without getting bored. Get Started You wouldn’t just jump in the car and head out on that cross-country roadtrip without looking at a map or peeking under the hood, right? The same logic applies to your fitness routine. Setting a fitness goal is a necessity to stay motivated and committed. Maybe it’s weight loss or running a race or just spending a set amount of time every week on your physique. If you need help getting started, Go! St. Louis (gostlouis.org) offers beginner training programs for runners, and the YMCA of St. Louis (ymcastlouis.org) has entry-level fitness counseling. And most area gyms will do a fitness assessment for you to see where you should begin and what goals you should set your sights on.

Plan your hike online at trails.com and localhikes.com—they have lists of trails in Missouri and Illinois with maps, photos and trail reviews. The Missouri Department of conservation (mdc.mo.gov) is also a great resource for trail info and if you feel like running for the hills, literally, Stltrailrunning.com has info on local areas to run off-road if you’d like to pick up the pace on the trail.

Add Adventure

Get Motivated By Giving Back

Take the road less traveled. Way less traveled. Mountain biking is the perfect way to combine your love of cycling with your passion for the great outdoors. Plan a trail ride with singletrack. com or trails.mtbr.com, both of which have trail reviews along with maps and photos so you know exactly what you’re getting into. Explore parks like the 17 miles of trails at Castlewood State Park or find one that fits your fancy at Gateway OffRoad Cyclists (gorctrails.com).

Get active and give back through local nonprofits that help you train for a big race while fundraising for a cause. Team In Training (teamintraining.org), can help you train for a marathon, half-marathon, triathlon, 100-mile bike ride or hiking event, all while benefitting leukemia and lymphoma research. Team Challenge (ccteamchallenge.org) helps you train for cycling and running events while supporting colitis and Crohn’s Disease research. If you’re just looking for a single race, try the St. Louis to Peoria Run (stjuderuns.org) August 6 and 7 to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. If shorter distances are more your style, try the Hope For Haiti 5K (hopeforhaiti5k.com), July 10 at Frontier Park in St. Charles, or the Multiple Sclerosis 10K sponsored by Ghisallo Running (goghisallo.com) July 3 at St. Louis Community College at Meramec in Kirkwood. Cyclists can get in on the action too with the MS 150 to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, with a two-day, 150mile ride September 11 & 12.

Buddy Up Almost everything is more fun if you do it with someone else—and having someone to hold you to your workout is an added benefit. Take tennis lessons or just hit the courts at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park. (dwightdavistennis.com). If four-wall action is more your style, try racquetball at Vetta Sports (vettasports.com), or the St. Louis Jewish Community Center (jccstl.com). Or get hands-on with a game of handball at the Forest Park Handball Club (fphcbigblue.com), one of the oldest handball clubs in the country.

Scenic Cycling Leave the asphalt jungle behind and take to the

Gear up! Everybody knows that accessories make the outfit. Well, they can also make the workout. The right gear can make your routine more enjoyable, efficient and safe. Sports watches nowadays do much more than tell the time. Companies like Garmin and Polar offer watches that have GPS capabilities and heart-rate monitors among other high-tech accoutrements. The new Garmin Forerunner 310XT (garmin.com) is even water resistant to 50 meters, perfect for you aquatic athletes. Don’t get so dazzled by tech toys, though, that you forget the basics. Take socks, maybe the most basic piece of gear, but definitely one of the most important. Step up to Teko Socks (tekosocks.com). They’re made in Boulder, Colorado with organic merino wool or certified 100-percent recycled poly material. Runner’s World gave the Teko Merino Midweight Minicrew its “Most Versatile Sock” rating for 2010.

If you’re serious about achieving a certain fitness or athletic goal, put it on the calendar. Nothing will keep you going back to the gym or putting in the miles like having an event to work toward. Cyclists can plan on the Moonlight Ramble (moonlightramble.org), August 21, or the Missouri State Criterium Championship (bigshark.com), August 1 in Jefferson City. Racewalkers can set their sights on the Summer Racewalk Series at the Pattonville High School track, courtesy of the Racewalker’s Club of St. Louis (racewalkstl.org). Thinking about a triathlon? Try the Beginner Indoor Triathlon, August 1 at the Chesterfield Family YMCA. The St. Louis Track Club (stlouistrackclub.com) and stlbiking.com keep extensive calendars of what’s happening all over the metro area, and shops like Big Shark and Ghisallo (goghisallo.com) also have lists of events they sponsor. Just don’t stand yourself up.

countryside. There’s an abundance of bike trails all over the metro area just waiting for you. The Katy Trail (bikekatytrail.com), Castlewood State Park (mostateparks.com) and the Chubb Trail (stlbiking. com/Trail-Chubb.htm), provide miles of scenic riding. On the east side, Madison County Transit (mcttrails.org) boasts 80-plus miles of bike trails. And if you decide to stay city-bound, Forest Park (forestparkforever.org) has a newly revamped series of paved bike paths that will take you past all of the parks attractions. For more ideas, stlbiking.com can give you a rundown of all of the cycling opportunities literally right outside your door.

Pump It Up Nobody says a workout is supposed to be easy—just ask the Navy SEALs. You can train like one at the TRX Hard Core class at Rock Gym (rockworkout. com) or push yourself with a kettlebell class at St. Louis Self Defense, Cross Fit or Sweat. Heat up your yoga routine with Bikram-style yoga sessions at Yoga St. Louis (yogastlouis.com) or get off that run-of-themill exercise bike and take to the virtual hills for a ‘for real’ workout with a spinning class at Bally Total Fitness (ballyfitness.com).

Go Vertical The sky really is the limit when it comes to climbing workouts. For a true aerial adventure, Upper Limits Rock Climbing Gym (upperlimits.com) has an indoor rock climbing wall and offers outdoor classes as well. The Center of Clayton (centerofclayton.com) has a climbing wall that can be used with or without ropes, while REI in Brentwood (rei.com) has a climbing wall right in the store and offers instruction, as well as a full selection of gear should you get the itch to hit the rocks for real.

Bumbershoot Aerial Arts Studio

Try Something New Bust out of that rut and shake things up. St. Louis has all sorts of options that provide unique workout opportunities that will put the spark back into your fitness routine. How about dodgeball or aerobics classes on trampolines? That’s what Skyzone Recreational Center in Chesterfield (skyzonesports.com) is all about. Or get airborne with a trapeze class at Bumbershoot Aerial Arts Studio (thebumbershoot. com) or just explore a new class that you never considered before, like poolside core conditioning at Santé at the Chase (santechase.com).

toughen up Sure, a bootcamp or 25-mile ride will kick your butt into gear, but the ultimate way to challenge yourself is through hard-core Lara Croft-style classes. Learn fighting moves that keep you fit with boxing and kickboxing classes at Sweat (sweatstlouis. com), St. Louis Workout (stlouisworkout.net) or St. Louis Self Defense and Fitness (stlouisselfdefense. com). St. Charles Brazillian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts (stcharlesmma.com) and Finney’s MMA (finneyskickboxing.com) have jiu jitsu and mixed martial arts classes Finney’s also has a fighter development program that will train you to get in the ring and fight for real.

Feel The Beat Be it Lady Gaga or Metallica, music can help motivate you and make your workout a lot more fun. But don’t just hit shuffle on your iPod and go, craft a playlist that’s right for the activity you’re doing. Inthegym.net has user-submitted playlists that are categorized by musical genre and workout. For some really eclectic music to include on your list, go to bestplaylists.com. or try askthetrainer. com, which has playlists and advice on how to make your own workout mix.

Feed Your Mind and Body Increase your physical, mental and spiritual flexibility with yoga. Studios like Southtown Yoga (southtownyoga.com) and St. Louis Yoga Source

(stlouisyogasource.com) have a range of classes for all levels. Once you have your body tuned up, make sure you’re filling it up with the right fuel. Hammer Bodies Custom Fitness (hammerbodies.com) and Nutriformance Fitness, Therapy and Performance (nutriformance.com) offer nutrition counseling to ensure you’re putting what you need into your body to get the most out of your workout.

Dance Your Butt Off Who needs machines and weights? Sometimes all that’s required for fitness is you, a partner and a little bit of rhythm. Try your hand at tripping the light fantastic and take a dance class. Club Viva St. Louis (clubvivastl.com), Casa Loma Ballroom (casalomaballroom.com), The Studio Inc. (thestudiobrentwood.com), and The Dance Co-op St. Louis (dancecoopstl.com) can teach you everything from salsa to waltzes, foxtrot to swing. Back at the gym, Club Fitness (clubfitness.us) has hip-hop aerobics. And if you want classes in a less-formal setting, Atomic Cowboy in the Grove (atomiccowboystl.com) sponsors swing dance classes every Thursday.

Get Rolling If your idea of roller skating involves disco balls and satin short-shorts, think again. Skating is a good way to stay active, and the St. Louis area has plenty of rinks. Take a class or participate in an open skate at St. Nicholas Roller Skating Rink (stnicholascatholicchurch.com) or Rollercade Roller Skating Rink (rollercadeskating.com). If you’re interested in any type of skating, especially inline, check out SpeedskateSTL (sports.groups.yahoo. com/group/SpeedskateSTL/), where you’ll find an avid local skating community and lots of info. Want to put your wheel skills to the test? Think about inline hockey; All American Inline Hockey (allamericaninlinehockey.com) has lessons and leagues once your skills are up to snuff.

Think Outside The Box /

Gone are the days of P.E. class push-ups and sit-ups. A key to sticking to any workout is to mix it up and have fun. Get sexy with your workout and take a zumba, strip cardio or chair striptease class at The Fitness Studio (fitsexybody.com), or hit the pole at the Michelle Mynx Academy of Pole Dance (michellemynxacademy ofpoledance. com). The Arch Rival Rollergirls (archrivalrollergirls.com) roller derby league periodically takes on new recruits as needed to mix it up on the track.

Join The Bootcamp Craze Get in on the bootcamp phenomena and get fit military-style, without the mandatory haircut. There’s a bevy of bootcamps available in STL; Cross Fit St. Louis (crossfitstl.com) and Santé at the Chase (santechase.com) both have bootcamp classes for various fitness levels. St. Louis Fitness Results has sessions specifically for the ladies (stlouisbootcampforwomen.com). Some classes are held outside for that real basic training feel, like the Tower Grove CoEd Bootcamp (meetup.com/towergrovebootcamp) in Tower Grove Park, where you’ll focus on strength training and endurance from head to toe during the one hour meet-ups. alivemag.com

Must-Try Trends Your wedding invitation is the first chance to make an impression and statement about your wedding. Show your guests you’re stylish with an of-the-moment matrimony invite with one of the three top trends from The Service Bureau Inc. Letterpress The biggest trend is letterpress; your invites set the expectation for your wedding and letterpress makes a bold and unique statement with a classic look and feel. Letterpress also allows brides to choose their paper—organic, tree free—and colors are bright and vivid. Dual Colors Brides-to-be are loving this latest trend; using two colors on the printed invite instead of one. A great way to mix-it-up, you can combine colors like spring green with turquoise or hot pink and orange with a bright-yellow backing. According to The Service Bureau, paper trends start long before the fashion trends—what you see new today in paper you will soon see in the fashion industry tomorrow. A Personal Touch Adding something very personal to your wedding invitation has been gaining popularity. This trend allows you to add tender sayings like “He loves me, he loves me not, he loves me!” or even a poem to the envelope or invite—whatever you choose, adding your own personal touch of individuality will make your invite more memorable (The Service Bureau Inc., 9773 Clayton Rd., 314.991.1104).

TOP TIPS

Weddings Receptions Rehearsals

Take your wedding reception from blah to brilliant with these top—and easy—tips from the experts at Weinhardt Party Rentals. Dress It Up Although white for weddings is eternally classic, try upgrading your table linens for more color and texture. Coordinating colors like Silver and Victorian Lilac, Gold and Camel, Navy and Yellow, or any monochromatic scheme will give you wow factor.

For more information about planning your wedding reception, please call Allison Walters at (636)946-6250

www.bogeyhillscc.com

Set Up Stations Adding mini-parties around the room will make any space exciting. Create themed food stations or personalized specialty drink bar. Design a dessert bar or candy station to tantalize your guests’ sweet tooth. Dinner Is Served Say goodbye to informal buffet lines and reintroduce yourself to the sit-down dinner. Start with small plates and transition to a formal dinner course. Or create a more comfortable ambience by serving dinner family style and share with family and friends. Center Of Attention Simple centerpieces will go a long way to personalize your space, but don’t limit those to just the tables. Use glass cylinder vases or small square vases throughout the room with candles and flowers to draw your attention to every detail. Curtain Call You can dramatically change your space by using pipe and draping around the venue. Drape the walls with white curtains, create a backdrop behind the head table and add LED lighting for a color-changing effect. Green Way to Serve and Impress To help the Earth and your budget, use china and glassware instead of plastics and disposable serving items. As oil prices rise, so does the price of plastics. Using china and glassware will not only give your event the look you want, it will also give you less to throw away (Weinhardt Party Rentals, weinhardtpartyrentals.com). alivemag.com

alive bride | engagements

Recently Ringed Three St. Louis couples share their engagement stories.

How we Met: John and I met 12 years ago while he was a student at Saint Louis University High and I was attending Ursuline Academy. We hung out with the same group of friends, but never thought of each other in a romantic way. We went our separate ways for college—John went to Indiana University at Bloomington and I went to the University of Dayton. During the holidays, we would see each other at parties, but nothing happened. It wasn’t until John returned to St. Louis after a few years living in New York City that we started to talk on the phone, go out and get drinks. Then one night he kissed me, and things were never the same.

The Proposal: John and I were supposed to be going to a St. Louis Blues game one Friday in October. I wasn’t feeling very well that day, so I left work early to rest before the game, stopping at my mom’s house on the way home. When I finally arrived home, John called me around 5pm and said that he was stuck in traffic and would not be able to go his house and change out of his suit. He arrived at my place, and after pacing for a few minutes, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I started crying and said “yes.” We then went to a romantic dinner at Sydney Street Café, followed by a surprise gettogether with my family and friends at Square One Brewery. The Big Day: November 13, 2010

The Couple: Christie Pollihan, 27 & Tony Vatterott, 32 How we Met: Tony and I met through mutual friends three years ago. The week Tony and I began dating, he lost his brother Joe in a car accident. I was just getting to know Tony, and before I knew it, I was at a memorial service for his brother, who I never even had the opportunity to meet. For a while, I thought I should take a step back to give Tony the time he needed to grieve this immense loss, but instead, we would get coffee almost every night that winter and eventually grew closer. Before long, he had swept me off my feet. The Proposal: The week of our engagement also happened to be the week of my birthday, and Tony said he wanted to go to dinner on Saturday night. I went to my friend Abby’s salon that Saturday to get a haircut and when I arrived, it was decorated with birthday banners, balloons and decorations. Apparently Tony wanted me to have a relaxing morning and had paid for all of my services. As I was getting my hair done, six-dozen roses were delivered. Then Abby came out of the back room with a beautiful black dress and shoes and said that Tony had gotten these for me and wanted me to be ready by 1pm. He then showed up and took me on a special day, starting with lunch at the Saint Louis Art Museum, then a walk in the Japanese Garden at the Missouri Botanical Garden. As we were walking along a bridge in the garden, Tony asked me to hold his camera. As I turned around, he was down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. The Big Day: December 11, 2010

84 ALIVE STL JULY 2010

The Couple: Krista Brown, 22 & Dustin Attarian, 23 How we Met: Dustin and I met in middle school, at Academic Athletic Academy Busch in 1998. I remember seeing him walk into the gym the first day of sixth grade and nudging the girl sitting next to me, and whispering, “He’s cute!” Years later, we went to separate high schools and kept a close friendship. One week after passing his driver’s test, Dustin picked me up for our first date at Ronnie’s 20 Cine and we saw Bend It Like Beckham. We began our relationship after (when we were both 16), fell in love and dated all throughout high school and college (I went to Fontbonne University and Dustin attended SIUE for undergrad, where he is currently earning his Master’s). The Proposal: After about six years of dating, Dustin decided it was finally time to pop the question. Dustin later revealed he had an elaborate plan of surprising me at work during lunch (I am a Teach for America teacher) and had even called my boss to set up the half-day off. But, as St. Louis weather would have it, a lovely blanket of snow covered the city and I had a snow day on the planned day. So, instead, the proposal was spur-of-the-moment—we went driving around the Holly Hills neighborhood, trying to figure out where to buy a sled so we could go sledding. All of a sudden, Dustin quickly pulls the car over and parks next to Carondelet Park and cranks up the radio, which was playing one of our favorite songs, “Say Hey (I Love You)” by Michael Franti & Spearhead. He jumped out, opened my car door, got down on one knee in the snow, pulled out the ring and asked me to marry him. The Big Day: March 12, 2011

Lucky in Love

Erica Di Cresce & Brandon Twitty April 24, 2010

A second chance to get to know each other brought this couple closer than ever before. By Kristin Stefek Brashares Photos by Linda Rivard, Rivard Photography Erica and Brandon ran in the same circles in high school, but it wasn’t until he returned from a stint in the U.S. Marine Corps that they went from acquaintances to admirers. They clicked instantly while hanging out with mutual friends, and three months into dating, Brandon told Erica he intended to marry her. On New Year’s Eve that year, he made good on his promise, as he got down on one knee just after midnight at a friend’s house party. On April 24, the couple exchanged vows in front of 125 of their closest friends and family members. THE VENUE: The Thaxton (314.323.3146, thethaxton.com) served as an all-inclusive site, with each part of the big day—the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception—taking place on a different floor of the historic multi-level facility. The ornate Art Deco environs struck a perfect balance of fun and formality. THE ATTIRE: Erica (25, Account Manager at Business Training Library) was every bit the beautiful bride in a head-turning Mori Lee A-Line gown from Happily Ever After Bridal in Chesterfield (636.536.3837, happilyeverafterbridalstl.com). Strappy, bejeweled heels from Wild Pair and Swarovski earrings—a day-of gift from Brandon (26, Value Stream Lead at Mark Andy, Inc.)— complemented the intricately beaded bodice. Bridesmaids sported sophisticated black chiffon deep V-neckline Maggy London dresses accented with silver brooches. THE SWEETS: Whipt Cream in Chesterfield (636.532.0020, whiptcream.com) concocted an ultra-creative cupcake tower with a six-inch round on top. Charm-like diamond ring, black bow tie and wedding dress sugar dollops decorated each minitreat, and a fondant bride and groom figurine topper added a touch of whimsy. THE FLORALS: Chic Events by Angie (chiceventsbyangie.com) worked wonders with allwhite flowers. A bundle of star lilies made up Erica’s bouquet, and bridesmaids cradled long-stemmed white calla lilies bunched by a black ribbon. Reception centerpieces featured more white florals submerged in tall, skinny cylinder vases.

A Perfect Match In a fabulous fall affair, this nature-loving duo channeled a bit of the very thing that led them to the altar: the outdoors. By Kristin Stefek Brashares PhotosbyMorganMatters,MorganMattersPhotography Breanne and Mike lived across the street from each other for years in college, but they didn’t meet until their senior year when mutual friends introduced them. Smitten right from the start, they soon found themselves inseparable. After graduation, he moved to D.C., and she went to Chicago. When they could no longer bear the distance between them, he moved to Chicago in March 2008. They had ventured to an outdoor museum of trees—the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, IL—eight months later when Mike (25, Analyst for McDonald’s Corporation) decided to make it official. Waiting for the right moment to present itself, he seized the opportunity to get down on one knee after spotting a sign for selecting the right landscape shrubbery that read, “Finding your perfect match.” THE VOWS: Breanne (25, recruitment specialist at

Kustom Seating Unlimited) knew exactly where she wanted to have the ceremony: Eden United Church of Christ in Edwardsville, the same place her parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles tied the knot.

THE PARTY: A cocktail hour with a pianist and

pomegranate martinis kicked off the reception at The Westin St. Louis (314.621.2000, starwoodhotels. com), and live music by Arvell and Company (314.721.9090, arvellandcompany.com) capped off the celebration.

Breanne Bourisaw & Mike Kasprzyk October 24, 2009

THE FARE: Many of the 200 guests raved about

the Westin’s food stations at dinner. The favorite: a “mashed potini” bar featuring mashed potatoes in martini glasses and a selection of popular toppings. Out-of-towners got to try Breanne’s favorite taste of St. Louis: toasted ravioli.

THE CAKE: A champagne ribbon matching the one on Breanne’s dress wrapped around the bottom of the four-tiered cake by Sugaree Baking Company (314.645.5496, sugareebaking.com), and a burgundy rose splashed a bit of color. THE DECOR: The bride’s and bridesmaids’

bouquets—artfully assembled by The Rebel Florist (314.962.3232, therebelflorist.com) with brightly colored roses and fall foliage—doubled as decorative pieces at the head table. Amber lighting cast a beautiful glow overhead and created a twig-shaped shadow design on one of the reception-room walls.

Boswell and Dr. Leroy Young began mastering both qualities while residents at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. In 2002, they combined their years of experience and familiarity with new technologies to build BodyAesthetic Plastic Surgery. After his residency, Dr. Boswell earned two prestigious plastic surgery fellowships where he received advanced training in different face, eye, and brow techniques. His expertise also includes body contouring, transferring fat from one body area to another, and nonsurgical facial rejuvenation with injectable fillers. Dr. Young is nationally regarded as an expert in breast surgery (especially with implants), patient safety, and body contouring following massive weight loss. In addition, he serves on numerous leadership committees of the major plastic surgery professional societies, where he focuses on educating other surgeons. In 2008, Dr. Young and Dr. Boswell started the BodyAesthetic Research Center to conduct clinical trials of drugs and procedures and help determine which are safe and effective. Services Internal Medicine Concierge Practice • Age Management Practice • Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Practice Transitions Weight Management Program • Advanced Laser Clinic: Cosmetic and Laser Procedures The limited amount of time and attention patients typically receive at most medical practices can leave them feeling like a nameless face, trapped in the managed-healthcare “time crunch.” Dr. Richard Bligh’s patients never feel rushed; his personal attention and progressive diagnostic techniques used to detect early deficits associated with the aging process set his practice apart. By using genetic details and pertinent lifestyle conditions to screen for significant risk factors, St. Louis Center for Preventive and Longevity Medicine focuses on you, the patient. Board certified in internal medicine and anti-aging medicine, Dr. Bligh explains his approach: “Each patient is treated with a customized healthcare plan which empowers the patient to make informed and proactive decisions on their well being.” The choice to age does not exist, so Dr. Bligh emphasizes prevention and lifestyle modifications to look and feel great no matter what a patient’s age. The one-on-one time Dr. Bligh spends with each patient allows him and his staff to get to know each one on a deeper level, which helps him make personalized recommendations that address the overall well being of each patient under his care.

Day of the Dead artifacts adorn the two-room space and complement the food as a captivating and conversation-worthy backdrop. Award-winning chef Christopher Lee has crafted recipes that utilize local farms and Sanctuaria also created its own garden to allow for the freshest ingredients possible in dishes like the vaca frita, a succulent Angus steak dish that’s a personal favorite of the restaurant. The wild tapas theme is at work in dishes like the piquillo poppers; oak roasted red peppers stuffed with a goat cheese blend, and the grilled lamb chops; tender Colorado bone-in lamb chops, marinated in smoked paprika and served atop savory pear and pine nut salsa.

You’ll love the Cuban influence of the frita, a traditional Cuban pork and chorizo slider topped with crispy Yukon gold potato strings and served on a Cuban sweet roll with house-made citrus herb sauce. The Chihuahua and guava empanadas are a must-try! The tender, flaky, sweet and savory filled turnovers are served with a zesty aji amarillo sauce, so incredible that you’ll want to order more. Pair these delectable dishes with a fresh-fruit cocktail or a local brew from Cathedral Square (now serving Iglesia Agave Ale) for a guaranteed “WILD” experience.

Kabobs, baked feta and dolmades compliment some of the hot mezes as you cap off your Greek getaway with a crisp, cool sangria, mojito or other offerings from their specialty menus.

For a fresh and unique mix of Turkish and Mediterranean cuisine, there is only one place to go.
