ear St. Louis,

Consider this less a “letter” than a big, fat, gushy thank you note. Since its inception in late summer of 2002, ALIVE has undergone a few facelifts, but it's always been a place where readers can find a sophisticated, sincere (but never too serious) and upbeat take on St. Louis fashion, culture and people. This month, we're excited to roll out a new look for ALIVE just in time for our 10th Anniversary Issue. Special kudos to Executive Editor Jennifer Dulin Wiley, Associate Art Director Kristin Kellogg, Associate Editor Gwen Ragno and the amazing editorial interns and contributors for making this milestone issue even more special. After 10 years of publishing, we can safely say that the only reason ALIVE still exists is because of the tireless work poured into it by our fearless staff and all of the creative and collaborative minds who do the job because it inspires us, it thrills us, and because we can't imagine doing anything else. It's a passion—with a streak of insanity— shared by many crazy publishers and other creatives in the industry. We are only able to show up and stay so inspired, thrilled and insanely passionate (or passionately insane) because of our generous clients and partners in the community. To them, we are grateful for the love and support over the years—for believing in us and for creating a community with us. To our readers, thank you for joining us in our explorations of St. Louis over the past 10 years—for reading us on your treadmill or picking us up at your favorite restaurant or coffee shop. Thank you for partying with us, celebrating with us and creating new exciting things with us. The list of people who we want to thank is simply too long to cover in these pages. We are truly in awe of how some of the most amazing people we know have rallied together to transform ALIVE over the years from a magazine into a community. We are one of several local businesses celebrating milestones this year, and we feel lucky to say that. We are grateful to be here, in St. Louis…ALIVE. Thank you, St. Louis—

time I saw ALIVE Magazine. I was a journalism student about to graduate from Mizzou, and I was absolutely ecstatic to see a hip new lifestyle publication introduced in my hometown. I made it a point to meet the editors, began taking on articles and have been passionately involved in the magazine—in one way or another—ever since. Looking back over my seven years of contributing articles, supporting events and, now, leading the day-to-day of the magazine, there's not an issue to date that I've been more excited to share than our 10th Anniversary edition. Preparing for the Anniversary Issue meant looking forward as much as we looked back. We're thrilled to introduce a fresh new look throughout the pages of the magazine this month, thanks to Associate Art Director Kristin Kellogg. Our 10th anniversary also felt like the perfect time to add more editorial pages, based on the feedback we received from you, our readers, in our 2011 Reader Survey. By popular demand, we've added more dining, style and arts and culture content—doubling the size of both our dining (p.101) and events sections (p.111), as well as adding new pages to the book. Be sure to check out our new “My Style” concept (p.46), where we'll highlight the unique personal styles of our readers, the revamped Engagements page (p.86) and our expanded STL Now section (p.19), featuring news related to shopping, dining and the arts. We're so grateful for the support we've received from the community—you'll see ads in this month's issue congratulating ALIVE on 10 years in St. Louis, and many of our past cover celebrities also took the time to wish us well in a special “Toast to 10” editorial (p.62). In addition to the new content you'll see on the masthead (p.8), which will feature staff picks and opinions based on our issue theme each month, you'll also see the names of a diverse set of community members in St. Louis who have graciously agreed to serve as the inaugural members of our first Editorial Advisory Board. I'm honored to be collaborating with Rhonda Broussard, Sara Burke, Reena Hajat Carroll, Sam Foxman, Sara Hentz, Cabanne Howard, Damon Johnson, Tuan Lee, Rosa Mayer, Pamela Raymond and Darin Slyman—who all serve St. Louis in diverse ways and have been valued friends and partners of ALIVE for many years. Our anniversary wouldn't be complete without a fabulous party. So, in true ALIVE style, we'll be throwing a can't-miss event, featuring fashion celebs Michael Drummond and Laura Kathleen (and perhaps a few more surprises), emcee extraordinaire Lola van Ella and entertainment by Dawn Weber and the Electro Funk Assembly and DJ Alexis & The House Kings, on Friday, April 13 at Peabody Opera House Downtown. Knowing I'll be rubbing elbows with fashion's finest authorities is more than enough motivation to start shopping my black-tie look. And, something tells me I won't be the only “Project Runway” fan “making it work.”

behind the issue

Cover in the Making ALIVE's 10th Anniversary Issue marked a new milestone: our first illustrative cover, designed by contributing Creative Director David Hsia. “For ALIVE's first non-photographic cover, our team brainstormed and exchanged a slew of ideas for months,” Hsia says. “In the end, we decided to keep it simple with design inspiration coming from the ALIVE logo itself.” Hsia came up with a bold concept that integrates ALIVE's signature A—which he created in 2009—as the background of the cover. Special metallic ink sets the whole concept apart, completing our commemorative 10-year cover.

Spring Fashion “When it comes to ALIVE's wellknown Fashion Features, sometimes an idea inspires the model selection, and sometimes a model inspires the idea. When considering the April fashion shoot (p.74), it was a little bit of both. We knew that Indianabased Mother model Grace Hartzel would be in town, so we immediately thought to break out a fun-and-flirty concept that was season-specific, but had been on the backburner. When Grace showed up to the set wearing pink floral socks, it confirmed that we had the right girl. She spent the day noshing on Twizzlers and Dubble Bubble, and endured February weather and cat calls in a pair of spring-essential short-shorts. 963's Chris Rubin de la Borbolla lent his U City home to the crew for the day, and we utilized our resources— from his artwork, toys and cats that served as props, to the stores within walking distance; we popped into Vintage Vinyl for a colorful backdrop, and hit up Ziezo for an of-the-moment collar on the fly.” – Fashion Editor Jill Manoff Heart attack

Fresh New Look ALIVE prides itself on staying fashionable, so after three years of wearing the same layout, it was time for a fresher look. “We went for a more current design to complement the sophisticated city magazine ALIVE has grown into over the past decade,” says Associate Art Director Kristin Kellogg. The design refresh coincided with the addition of more editorial pages and a restructuring of departments. At readers' request, we doubled the calendar listings and expanded our dining, arts and style coverage. “We couldn't be happier to unveil this fresh look and expand just in time for our 10th anniversary,” says Executive Editor Jennifer Dulin Wiley. 14

Stuff Fashion Boys Say

Sewing up loose ends with Project:Design! winner Stephen Curd.

by Jill Manoff

In reviewing Stephen Curd's rÉsumÉ,

few would guess that the St. Louis native graduated from college just four years ago (Lindenwood University, specifically, where he majored in fashion design with a focus on menswear). Already peppered with runway shows and accolades, it backs what those who've seen his work firsthand already know: He's destined for success. Catching Up With Curd

The 2011 winner of Saint Louis Fashion Week's annual Project:Design! competition, Curd earned the love of online voters and judges with his impeccable “gender-bending” GaricStephens collection. “I love a great menswear pant that looks both flattering on a male, and sexy on a woman,” he says. “My signatures are my use of vintage fabrics and the tailoring of my clothing—they're things I have worked on for years to perfect.” Currently living in Chicago, Curd can't say enough about the competition's networking opportunities and what it did to jumpstart his business. Since the big STL win, he's shown in Chicago Fashion Week and has had his line picked up by several boutiques.

Come Fall 2013, Curd's loyal fan base can shop his latest brainchild—a collection motivated by the Velvet Underground song, “I'm Waiting for the Man.” However, for Spring 2013, he'll be focused on the inspirations of another designer. Curd recently returned from New York, where he completed an internship under designer Raul Penaranda. “I was hired to create four looks for his Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week show,” Curd says. “It was a complete honor and dream-come-true.” And, obviously, he made an impression. “He has offered me a job as a senior designer, and I will be moving to New York in July to get started!”

Judging from his long-term goals, he'll be back in the Midwest soon enough. “My plan is to soak up as much information and experience as possible in New York,” Curd explains. “I want to return to Chicago stronger, open a few boutiques and travel all over—to take on the fashion world, one state at a time.”

Mighty Fine Furnishings Eating local is one thing, but what about the table and chairs? The new Goebel & Company Furniture offers locally-sourced, hand-built solid wood furniture, perfect for everyday use. STL owner Martin Goebel and his team design each piece with 3D modeling technology, then produce in small batches to keep the price tag affordable. Because they use quality regional timber, the designs are able to highlight the natural beauty of wood grain. “Our pieces are created to be affordable heirlooms that will be enjoyed for generations,” Goebel says. Urban Sprawl The new Midtown hotspot Plush brings multilevel entertainment to new heights. by Christopher Reilly

Occupying four sprawling floors of a Midtown building

that was formerly home to high-end lofts, Plush St. Louis combines a bar, diner, espresso bar and concert hall all under one roof. Owner Maebelle Reed opened Plush St. Louis and modeled it after her Tuscon, AZ, club of the same name. The space, with its artistic décor, is as eclectic as the customers it seeks to attract—a wide range of people from different ages and socioeconomic backgrounds, mingling and enjoying quality entertainment together. The multipurpose environment emphasizes creativity in the kitchen, décor and entertainment. concert hall

Accommodating up to 800 people, the two-story concert hall on the first floor presents national, regional and local talent nightly, playing every genre from indie rock to punk to hip-hop. Many of the performances are free. For lesser-known names, the online event calendar notes similar bands to give you an idea of what they sound like. Some of the larger regional acts to date have included Javier Mendoza and The Voodoo Blues Band. On April 5, catch the White Rabbits.

The circular main bar curves from the café into the concert hall with pedestal stools and funky art-deco chandeliers. Bartenders serve up classic cocktails and a large selection of beers, from Stag to local craft brews. The selection of single-malt whiskeys includes Glenmorangie and Glenfarclas. Sláinte!

If you're in the mood to play, ascend to the second floor for a game of shuffleboard or ping pong. You can also enter the balcony space of the concert hall—complete with its own bar—to get a bird's-eye view of the show below. Or, step onto the outdoor patio for a breath of fresh air.

The 10,000-square-foot fourth floor serves as a small venue for intimate concerts or private functions like wedding receptions. Stripped down to its industrial state, the 300-person space allows for complete transformation to fit the event being hosted.

Nico

A Mediterranean-inspired restaurant in The Loop opens with well-known restaurateur Tom Schmidt firmly behind it. by Cristy Miller The “little brother” of Tom Schmidt's popular

French bistro, Franco, has no intention of taking a backseat with its Mediterranean flair and finely crafted cuisine. Nico's soft, fresh focaccia bread, made in-house and served warm with a touch of olive oil and salt, certainly will not disappoint—nor will the open-faced roasted red pepper and cucumber sandwich, drizzled with a light basil-yogurt spread and served with house-made yukon potato, turnip and celery root chips. Such is to be expected from Schmidt and his masterful chef Chris Williams, who opened the new Loop restaurant in late February in the former Brandt's restaurant space. A Family Affair Nico is the little brother of

Franco both literally and figuratively. Named after Schmidt's nephew, Nico takes the same farm-totable approach as Franco, but with a smaller menu and slightly lower price points. Although the menu reads a little more refined Where To Go on paper, the Mediterranean-inspired dishes 6525 Delmar Blvd., are accessible and played The Loop 314.727.0200 down on the plate. The Entrées: $15-$21 range of influences evident Hours: Sun.-Thurs., in the list of starters, sand11am-10pm; Fri.-Sat., wiches and entrées is also 11am-11pm; Sat.-Sun., appreciated, with Spanish, brunch 9am-2pm French and Italian flavors all making appearances. Even Moroccan notes show in dishes like the lamb entrée, served with couscous and house-made harissa. Global Cuisine The Crudite Trio with chilled

beets, celery root remoulade and carrot-raisin is a traditional appetizer served with a modern twist, but Williams' house-cured salmon with champagneorange vinaigrette is a light and flavorful option to start. Dishes adhere to Schmidt's affinity and devotion not only to local and seasonal ingredients, but also to making as much as possible in-house. Pork belly is cured onsite and used expertly in the carpaccio starter, with frisee, green beans and Banyuls-Grain mustard dressing. Pappardelle is made from scratch and combined with Ragu Napolitano of tomato, pancetta, pork shoulder and pork belly for a hearty and tender entrée. The chicken paillard is layered with the robust flavors of capers and served with basil polenta and brocollini, and the skate wing is also satisfying with a brown-butter sauce and potato cake. Desserts include a chocolate flan, madeleines with stewed fruit and a nice play on sweet-and-

Get Your Read On books

On World Book Night, thousands of volunteers will descend on St. Louis to spread the written word. by Christopher Reilly On Monday, April 23, a few people will arrive on the Arch steps, sit down one by one and begin to read books. The group of readers will grow larger and larger, until the mob forms giant letters that spell “Read Books.” Quite possibly the world's first reading flash mob, the event will be recorded and posted on YouTube. It's all part of St. Louis' participation in World Book Night. Designed to spread the joy and love of reading, World Book Night began in the UK in 2011 as a charitable initiative that recruited volunteers to take to the streets and hand out free books to strangers. Its success last year was unexpected—one million books were handed out—and this year, Ireland, Germany and the United States are eager to get in on the action. The St. Louis Independent Bookstore Alliance is sponsoring the event locally, with Nikki Furrer, owner of Pudd'nhead Books, leading the effort. Book 'em, Danno Nationwide, the goal is to get 50,000 volun-

teers involved. Titles to be distributed include both old and new books, such as “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins, “Friday Night Lights” by H.G. Bissinger and “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou. The tomes are specially printed as World Book Night editions, paid for by publishers, distributors and authors. The point of World Book Night is to get great books into the hands of people who seldom read. Volunteers will give the books away on street corners, at the office, on the MetroLink and elsewhere. Give and Get Furrer says the event is truly a win-win. Those

who give away books get to celebrate their own love of reading, and those who receive them get something that can last a lifetime. The bookstores hope that it also translates into more people buying books in the future. While it's too late to volunteer, there's still plenty of time to get in on the flash mob at the Arch—just show up!

Fontbonne University and Mustard Seed Theatre have teamed up to present their first annual New Play Festival. Out of more than 60 plays entered by new playwrights from across the country, this year's winner is “The Geography of Nowhere” by hometown actor, director and writer Joshua Cook. The story is a twisted journey of three individuals who have little in common, but are united by the drive to build a spiritual utopia. A second play by Cook, “An Invitation Out,” and a play by another St. Louisan, DJ Sanders, also finished in the final four. The submissions were judged blindly by Seth Gordon, Mary Ann Hogan, Linda Kennedy, Bobby Miller and Deanna Jent, Mustard Seed Artistic Director. Contest rules stipulated only that the plays must deal with faith or social justice. “The Geography of Nowhere” will be presented in staged readings at 7pm on April 22 and 23 in Fontbonne's Fine Arts Theatre, 6800 Wydown Blvd. Tickets are $10. To make reservations, call the Mustard Seed box office, 314.719.8060.

Collaboration and Planning Many don't

think of creating a board and allowing others you choose to collaborate on the content. This feature can help savvy users like yourself with anything from wedding planning, to gift giving, to where to go for the next guys' night out, to office brainstorming for that big meeting. The best part is that you have a visual history that all members can share. Friendly Competition Want to get some ideas

on what main dish to serve at your next dinner party? Why not crowd-source some answers from your friends and create a little friendly competition via a Pinterest board? Allow your friends to submit their replies, and offer a fun prize to the person who wins. Create a Gallery Don't want to spend a ton of money to share the photos or videos from a big event? Create a photo or video gallery on Pinterest, and share with all of the guests. Selling Businesses and individuals who sell products online can use Pinterest in smart ways to gain new customers. You can create great product boards, even add pricing, and link back to an online shopping cart. Portfolios You can also use Pinterest to

“pinning” last night, then it's time you checked out one of the hottest new social media trends, which has not only landed on the Top 10 list of social networks, but was also named by Tech Crunch as the best new startup in 2011.

The creative social sharing network allows users to make visual bulletin boards online and share their inspirations with the world, and it's proven highly addicting for everyone from artists and other creative types to parents and college students. But, does Pinterest actually stand up to all the hype? We put pinning to the test to see if this creative network is really the next big thing. Pinterest generates some of its hype by being exclusive. No, you don't need a Members Only jacket, but as of March, you have to be invited or request a membership to join. But, not to worry— if you ask around, you'll probably find that you already know a few pinning peeps who will gladly invite you to join. And, if not, the request

on the website doesn't take that long to process. Once you're “in” and have had enough time to gloat, you can begin creating your own themebased inspiration boards full of images, videos, text and other media that you find relevant. Like other social sites, you can follow others and be followed. And, if people really like what you posted, they can re-pin your content, just like being retweeted on Twitter. Most of you have likely already caught the bug, and are familiar with the basics. But, there might be some other features you haven't considered. Beyond just pinning pictures to your board, how can you use Pinterest to your advantage? This is our cue...

advertise your services or post a crafty version of your personal résumé or online portfolio. With some clever curating and effort, you can create a visually stunning brag board of your professional skills and work. Blogging Tired of blogging? Or, perhaps you

never became a blogger (but kind of wanted to) because of the time required to keep up with all the writing. Now, you can create your own version of a visual blog (or multiple ones) through the various boards you create. And, like people do with blogs, you can grow your own fan base of followers. Directing Traffic Pinterest has a large fan base that might not be following you on your other social media channels. You can create your own boards to drive those folks to additional goodies you have up on your website, blog or other hotspot. Get Hashing Like Twitter and Google+, Pinterest can also support hashtags. These hashtags can be applied to any of the ideas above to help drive even more eyes to your board.

Jacob Laws 29, Senior Designer, CURE Design Group Interview by jennifer dulin wiley

Call it an obsession with beautiful things—Jacob Laws would. The award-winning interior designer has dedicated his life to perfecting the living spaces of others. The best part? There's still plenty of “room” for more. How He Got Into the Biz Unofficially, rear-

ranging my parents' and family friends' houses at age 4; I just couldn't help myself. Officially, I got my start at a firm in West County, which is where my now business partner and I had an immediate connection. Eventually, we launched CURE, and the rest is history. Education/Training I went to school for Art History, which contributes to my work every day. But, growing up surrounded by all forms of art and design is definitely what initially inspired me. My parents enrolled me in summer classes at Saint Louis Art Museum when I was very young, and I fell in love. Also, seeing the international design projects of my wildly talented Uncle Phil-

lip opened my eyes to the endless possibilities my industry provides. Best Work Day Ever Having a client who gave me carte blanche on both vision and budget at our first meeting. That's a rarity and such a compliment to have someone really captured by your previous work and hand over that kind of trust, which allows me to flex my design muscles.

check-ins with my contractors on jobs; followups with clients; showroom searches; texts, texts, emails, emails; great music while I'm driving from project site to project site…hopefully, in the evening I can get to a spin class, which helps me unwind, then dinner with friends or a date with my DVR while I work a little more. Proudest Moment It can be something as little

as finding the perfect Milo Baughman chairs that cost next to nothing at a flea market, or having a client tell me that the work I've done has exceeded expectations. As far as accolades go, I'm very proud to have been named “One of the Top 7 Designers in St. Louis” and to have won six industry awards in two years. Best Job Perk Having access to the best pieces

Why His Job Rocks Being able to get up every

day and be grateful to be doing what I love. How that influences my quality of life is something that is truly priceless. Also, being able to utilize and harness my creative energy and implement it in a way that also influences my clients' quality of life is fantastic. Typical Day Starbucks has become a close personal friend. If it's a good morning, the gym comes first, followed by a call to my business partner, Sara (she's my better half ). Next comes

through the design trade. If some people are addicted to shoes or clothes (which come in a close second for me), my addictions are furniture, fixtures, vintage lighting and one-of-a-kind finds. Goals for the Future To keep building our brand is No. 1, and creating beautiful, innovative and functional living spaces that are dynamic and transcend trends. I'd eventually like to have a product line that would make my aesthetic accessible to a larger demographic than just private clients.

Natural colors and wild chevron prints journey out of Africa. by Jill Manoff So, a Kenyan excursion is not in the cards. Maybe it's for the best. Your idea of a fab vacation never really involved wielding binoculars and bouncing around in a jeep. Still, witnessing vivid landscapes, being “one with nature” and wearing the cute khaki clothes that seem crucial for “roughing it” have always (since Meryl Streep did it, anyway) been appealing. Luckily, thanks to a number of designers' African mindsets for spring, dressing the part is definitely doable. Simply sport geometric tribal prints—like those shown by Proenza Schouler—or, work pieces in the same earthy color palette backed by fashion's arbiter of luxe, Michael Kors. You'll instantly look safari-chic. As for canoodling with the wild, you can always go out without bug spray.

tie, standing out from the other suits can be complicated—unless you're George Clooney. Luckily, a new combo is making waves: the spread-collared shirt and Windsor-knotted tie. The wide-open space between the shirt's two collar tips serves as the perfect frame for the hefty knot, which draws attention to your fashion expertise— and upwards to your clean-shaven face and perfectly-coifed 'do. For perennially sharp gents long “up-in-the-air” about how to make a statement, consider the pairing your perfect match. 1 / Tommy Hilfiger shirt and tie available at Macy's, Saint Louis Galleria, 314.726.1810. 2 / Eton shirt and Robert Talbott tie available at Woody's, Frontenac, 314.569.3272. 3 / Armani shirt and Hickey Freeman tie available at Saks Fifth Avenue, Plaza Frontenac, 314.567.9200.

In a month notorious for being soggy and damp, you may find yourself (unlike years past)

cringing at the thought of brighter days ahead. Designers of wellies—most notably, Hunter— have recently released a downpour of poppy takes on your longtime wet-weather essential. Defined by orange, cherry-red and lemon varieties, their latest incarnations are enticingly fresh and perfect for color-blocking in the rain. While you'd likely be willing to forego flowers in order to wear them through May, you're better served to slip on a pair in your fave hue while you still can. Not only will they remind you to look for a rainbow, but they'll also serve as a hint to those less savvy: There are no rain checks in fashion.

my style

Lindsay Pattan Founder/Owner/Vintage Curator, Miss Ohio Vintage & Social Media Coordinator, Bakers Footwear Group

Describe your personal style. A little feminine with some harsher qualities. My standard is a girly blouse, flared denim, suede booties, a leather jacket, a clutch and bangles. What are you wearing today? A BCBGMaxAzria dress, vintage earrings, vintage bracelets and a vintage lion belt from Miss Ohio Vintage; vintage rings and bracelets from BelleStyle; a Bakers collar necklace and “Jacquie” booties; and vintage tights from an estate sale. How do you curate vintage pieces for your personal wardrobe? I look for two things: bold basics (in classic cuts and great fabrics that will pair well with anything, but also stand out alone) and eccentric statement pieces—think over-the-top garments and accessories in hot prints, textures and shapes. What's one item from your closet that you cannot live without? I wouldn't make it without my leather jacket from BCBGMaxAzria. What's your go-to piece? Shorts and tights are my go-to, but if it comes down to one piece, it's definitely my boyfriend blazer with leather sleeves from BCBGMaxAzria. Which designers are you obsessed with? Acne, Altuzarra, Band of Outsiders, Dion Lee, Alice + Olivia, Jil Sander, Marni, Balenciaga, Zac Posen, Theyskens' Theory, Thakoon and BCBGMaxAzria. What trend are you loving right now? I am dying for pops of color and eccentric prints. Where do you shop in STL? Estate sales, Eve's Apple Vintage, Miss Ohio Vintage, BelleStyle Bijoux, Ivy Hill, Sole & Blues and Ziezo. What's your biggest fashion pet peeve? It totally irks me when I find a piece I love, but the quality is iffy. – Interview by Jill Manoff

Hue to Tango

Tangerine Tango is the bold new color stepping right off the runways and into your home. by Ruth Lee Every year, the Pantone Color Institute

has the daunting task of choosing the Color of the Year. The organization scours the latest runway and home shows to see what's hot, what's fashion-forward and what shoppers won't be able to get enough of in the next few months. The organization also adds psychology into the equation—considering the specific emotions a certain color can elicit. True to its name, the Tangerine Tango 2012 Color of the Year is vibrant, warm and bursting with energy. The statement this bold color can make was proven on the runways by the likes of Sita Murt, Tommy Hilfiger and Elie Tahari, who turned to Tangerine Tango to spice up their latest collections. But, the red-orange power hue works just as well off the runway—it just takes some balance. Pamela Calvert of Savvy Surrounding Style says the key to incorporating a vibrant color like Tangerine Tango is starting with a neutral base: think gray, beige or brown. A clean palette is crucial, as is utilizing a variety of accessories where Tangerine Tango can shine. Vases, pillows and frames are just a few of many that can work, but any infusion of the hot new color is sure to revitalize a tired-looking room that's ready to emerge from winter hibernation. “Spring is an excellent time to freshen your home with a beautiful pop of runway color,” Calvert says. We couldn't agree more.

Old is New The Monk Vase makes Tangerine Tango look chic and sophisticated by accenting it with black. The design is reminiscent of ancient pottery, but with a modern-day finish. Niche, 314.621.8131. Center of Attention Spread light and energy with these candlesticks that are sure to complement any dinner party. Use them as centerpieces, and maximize their potential by choosing place settings with Tangerine Tango accents. Savvy Surrounding Style, 314.432.7289.

From House to Home A fusion of passion and profession, modern and vintage, results in a shabby-chic oasis. by Kate Allen When Sara and kurt Hentz first laid eyes on the 100-year-old Ladue estate that would become their home, they couldn't help but have vision. As a successful commercial real estate broker, Hentz had big ideas for the traditional farmhouse property, a 3,000 square-foot main house with a detached garage. With a little imagination, and the expertise of the ultra-creative Euro Trash design team, she embarked on a mission to create a larger-than-life outdoor pavilion and detached carriage house, featuring the clean lines of modern architecture and vintage details that make a house a home. Come One, Come All There's something for everyone in the Hentz's carriage house. The modern, open floor plan includes a large living space, kitchenette and work station. French oak-framed mirrors and a frame-free display of antique pressed botanicals welcome guests into the space while antique greenhouse doors offer privacy to the full bath and guest bedroom—allowing Hentz to achieve a high-end space on a “TJ Maxx budget.” Outdoor Couture Open to the

elements on the West end, the pavilion serves as an open-air extension between the main house and the carriage house. Hentz envisioned the pavilion to be constructed from reclaimed elements, so Euro Trash owner Annie Brahler collected the reclaimed beams, planks and roof sheathing to create the outdoor oasis, as well as the salvaged limestone for the large fireplace. The outdoor kitchen and floor-to-ceiling fireplace add sophistication to the seasonal space. Discarded furniture that Hentz found while working on a commercial project made the final touch. With a dash of DIY and pinch of TLC, the outdoor lounge, with designer handbag dust covers as pillows, is the epitome of class and style.

Form & Function Between their careers and their children's schoolwork, there was a definite need for dedicated workspace in the Hentz's blueprints. The custom project desks were handmade by Euro Trash with reclaimed oak, plumbing conduit and industrial wheels to accommodate the needs of the family at the drop of a hat.

ceilings with exposed duct work create an industrial feel, the guest room, comprised primarily of European elements, is warm and inviting. The raw, unfinished oak flooring is warmed with a chic zebra rug, and the greenhouse doors are flanked with vintage photos of Kurt and Sara Hentz's parents.

Personal Touch To preserve their identities in the primarily industrial space, Hentz infused it with personal effects. The work space and cantilevered shelves are filled with old books, vintage posters and photos of her husband from his glory days on the high school football field. The Euro Trash team was even able to repurpose a vintage Dutch filing cabinet to display their collection of National Geographic magazines.

HIGHER EDUCATION AccelerAte Your cAreer: How Having a bacHelor’s degree can provide career stability and advancement in an uncertain economy.

The ambiguity of the current job market shows a growing demand for versatility in this increasingly competitive economy—even for those who are already gainfully employed. Having a bachelor’s degree not only increases your ability to be hired if you ever need to change jobs, but it also ensures that you are prepared for any career obstacles that may be thrown your way. Adult programs at local universities such as Saint Louis University and Fontbonne University understand the conflicts employed adults face when continuing their educations. Thus, affordable tuition and convenient class times have become key in helping professionals expand their knowledge and capabilities.

Saint LouiS univerSity Saint Louis University’s School for Professional Studies, or SLU for Busy Adults, provides a comprehensive and unparalleled educational program for adults searching for career advancement and security. Offering degrees in areas such as Organizational Leadership and Technology/Computer Science, the faculty and staff understand the needs of adult students taking their careers and résumés to the next level. SLU for Busy Adults offers eight-week

accelerated terms five times a year, with courses specifically tailored for working men and women. The private institution is renowned for its high quality of education, and SLU’s School for Professional Studies offers accelerated curriculums at half the cost of regular tuition, making it easily affordable and accessible for those who feel they don’t have the time or money for extended undergraduate and graduate study.

Fontbonne University has been distinguished for its OPTIONS program, which provides evening, weekend and online classes for working professionals of all ages. Linda Maurer, dean of the Eckelkamp College of Global Business and Professional Studies at Fontbonne, notes, “We believe that in the long run, a bachelor’s or master’s degree is worth it, financially and professionally, and we try to make the experience as flexible and convenient as possible without ever compromising academic quality.” She cites a recent study showing that a bachelor’s degree can help you either advance in your current job or jumpstart a new career, and earn 66 percent more over the course of your lifetime. The faculty and staff at Fontbonne understand factors like family and job obligations, so they work diligently to develop programs conducive to working with—not against—adult students’ everyday lives. OPTIONS offers a broad selection of class times and formats, including online courses, in eight-week sessions held five times throughout the year. Accelerated courses engage students with faculty members who both teach and work in their fields, providing first-hand experience and knowledge for those digesting a new course of study. Designed to be accessible and affordable for any schedule, OPTIONS makes earning a bachelor’s degree manageable for adults who may otherwise be intimidated by the idea of going back to school. In today’s competitive market, having a bachelor’s degree from an esteemed university can make all the difference in the world. MORE INFO

The Bride

Melissa Kimmick,

28, Registered Nurse, Pediatric ICU, St. Louis Children's Hospital The Groom

Ryan Hill,

28, Project Manager, ICS Construction Services

The Ride of a Lifetime Love soars to new heights at a City Museum celebration.

by Kate Allen

Their Story Melissa Kimmick and Ryan Hill will always be kids at heart. It was a fact made certain not

only by their engagement, but the carefree and whimsical wedding day that would follow. After a chance encounter through mutual friends in 2005, the two passed in and out of one another's lives for the next two years, and kept tabs on each other through friends. Finally, in 2007, they made their relationship official. Three years later, Ryan took “official” one step further and showed up on Melissa's doorstep on Christmas morning to “borrow some wrapping paper.” Once he had finished secretly wrapping several items from the bride's own living room, he presented them to her. Disappointment and confusion began to show on her face, just as Ryan got down on one knee to give Melissa her real gift. The newly engaged couple shared the holiday, and their excitement, with family and friends, and immediately began planning their big day.

Up and Away The couple chose City Museum in

Downtown St. Louis for its vibrant atmosphere and proximity to Washington Avenue nightlife. Little did they know, the rooftop Ferris wheel at sunset would provide some of their fondest memories—and most talked-about photos!

Photos by beth Berry Photography

In Perfect Tandem After choosing a stationary

suite featuring a tandem bicycle, the couple couldn't believe it when they spotted a discarded bicycle built for two, left out with the trash one morning. Before they could turn around to scoop it up, another passerby had beaten them to it. A fearless Melissa chased him down and pleaded her case. Needless to say, the treasure perfectly accented the couple's big day.

One FINE Day On the day of her wedding, Melissa

walked down the aisle of All Souls Catholic Church, the same aisle her parents had walked down years before. Wearing a Mori Lee gown, and flanked by both of her parents, Melissa met Ryan at the altar to exchange “I Dos” in a traditional Catholic ceremony. The couple's prize pooch, Petie, shared in the excitement, joining Melissa and Ryan for post-ceremony photos in Tower Grove Park. Soon, Petie will be joined by a baby brother or sister, as the newlyweds welcome their first child.

DIY Details Melissa and Ryan showcased their DIY handiwork on several wedding details, including centerpieces, place cards and desserts. Melissa created beautiful vintage centerpieces with dried flowers and potpourri in Depression-era glass mason jars. Handcrafted place cards, accented with buttons and push pins, were displayed on a bulletin board that the bride covered with tandem bicycle-printed fabric. The couple's cake was a family affair, created by Three Cake Ladies, a business started by Melissa's extended family. The bride also treated herself and each of her bridesmaids to handmade clutches from Etsy.

Captivating Couple Following a Mediterranean-

inspired dinner, courtesy of Russo's Catering, Melissa and Ryan kept City Museum's Architecture Hall energized with a playful version of the traditional photo booth and the sounds of St. Louis' Downtime Productions band. Longtime Lady Gaga fans, the couple shared their first dance to the pop queen's “Captivated.”

Recently Ringed

Three newly engaged St. Louis couples share their love stories.

Gina DeGenova, 26 & Stephen Rau, 28

The Proposal: Stephen proposed on the steps leading up from the riverfront to the Arch. It was extra special because we met on a riverbank as well, on a float trip in 2010! Our “Meet Cute”: I told my friend, “I'm going to marry that guy someday,” as I pointed at this tall guy with long, curly hair. I knew after he shook my hand and introduced himself that this wouldn't be the last time I'd see him. We hung out at the campfire, and he asked for my number. He didn't have a pen, so he said he would memorize it. Sure enough, he called, and we went on our first date. I dared him not to fall in love with me—he lost! Our Song: “Hooked On a Feeling” by Blue Swede. The Big Day: April 20, 2013 at St. Genevieve Church and Chaumette Vineyards & Winery.

Alice Coulter, 26 & Jon Benner, 27

Michelle De Villar, 26 & Nick Cook, 26 Occupations: I'm a professional ballet dancer for St. Louis Ballet, and Nick is a law student at SLU Law. The Proposal: Nick proposed atop a cliff in Lanai, Hawaii, with a breathtakingly beautiful view. First Impression: When I first met Nick, I thought he was attractive, but too full of himself. Once I got to know him, you could say he grew on me. Now, we've been together for 3½ years! Our “Meet Cute”: The night after our first date, my car got stolen. The next day, it was recovered, but having just moved to St. Louis, I had no one to call to help me pick it up. Nick came to my rescue, and after spending four hours together, we felt like we'd known each other forever. Five days later, Nick's car got stolen from a different location. We started our relationship on a roller

coaster and have been along for a fun ride ever since. We now look back and can laugh at our misfortune and how it was, in fact, the best thing that could have happened to us. Our Song: “Smile” by Madeleine Peyroux. Our relationship in three words: Funny, inspiring and adventurous. Believe it or not: We are both a little nerdy and like to play video games. Together, we like to: Watch movies, go out for good food at St. Louis' great restaurants, see shows at The Fox, go to Cards games and to Forest Park when it's nice. Home Sweet Home: We will hopefully stay in St. Louis, possibly in the Clayton area. The Big Day: August 11, 2012 at Randall Art Gallery.

The Proposal: Jon proposed at the graduation party I threw for him, with a speech in front of our friends and family. It was fabulous! He managed to keep the secret from me for months. Our “Meet Cute”: We were 13, and he caught my eye by doing back flips in my front yard! We dated in high school, broke up before he went to college, then got back together in college. Our Song: “Stuck Like Glue” by Sugarland. Believe it or not: Our average fight lasts about 30 seconds before we both burst into hysterical laughter. Perfect date night: Dinner at Harvest, dessert at Cyrano's and Netflix at home. The Big Day: May 25, 2012 at Our Lady of the Pillar Church and SqWires.

Celebrating a decade in st. lous By Kelly Hamilton and Elizabeth Tucker

When we wrote the very first issue of ALIVE, we weren't setting out to create a

widely distributed fashion, culture and lifestyle publication for St. Louis. We weren't planning on producing large-scale events in the city, or launching anything like Saint Louis Fashion Week. That isn't to say we didn't take ourselves seriously…we just didn't know where that first little issue would lead us. We set out with a mission to share useful information, and like most ambitious young people (we were 20, 25 and 30 at the time), we were open to the serendipity that life and business bring you when you're really passionate about something…and just a little fearless. Looking Back Kelly: I met Elizabeth in 2001 when I showed up to apply for a parttime job at Attilio's Discount Supplements, the emerging retail chain Attilio had started a few years before that was a competitor to GNC. Elizabeth: We grew very quickly over the next few years and expanded from just a few stores to 12. We noticed that we were getting more calls every day from people who were not only interested in our vitamins and health products, but information on how to live healthy lifestyles. We talked about starting a newsletter for our customers to inform them on how to eat healthy and exercise, which would help them get better results. Kelly: I remember sitting on the stoop of Attilio's Central West End house, and Elizabeth saying, “Let's go on a trip; we need a vacation anyway. We'll hole up in a cabin, and come up with things to write about. It'll be

fun.” Attilio told us that when we got back, he'd figure out how to lay it out and get it printed.

Road trip of a Lifetime Elizabeth: Our company lawyer, Mitch Margo, told us we could use his cabin in Vail, CO, for a few days. So, we road tripped it to the mountains. It was August 2002, a beautiful time to be there. We listened to John Denver as we rolled through Golden and stopped off in Boulder for a night. In Vail, we spent two days punching out the four or five articles that went into the first issue—one on yoga, one on eating healthy and one on weight loss. Kelly: We weren't sure how it would be put together, but I imagined it would fit nicely into one of the Microsoft Word templates, or if we wanted to get “fancy,” we could invest in Microsoft Publisher. When we got back, Attilio taught himself rudimentary Adobe Illustrator skills

The Early days

2002-2004 and laid it out using some stock images and a header that said “Alive: Your Journal for Personal Wellness.” We had a name. Back then, we had no concept of high-res imagery or how textheavy our articles really looked. Jim Bowe from Trio Printing helped us print our first issue, and we beamed with pride when the first copies arrived. Elizabeth: People started picking them up and asking when the next one would come out. We knew we had something that people wanted, so we started looking at how we could put them in more distribution locations. Printing was expensive, so we decided to find someone in a similar industry who might want to help sponsor the printing. Without necessarily recognizing it, we were looking for advertisers, which created a new business unit for us—with its own very unique challenges.

Building A Dream Team Elizabeth: We knew we didn't have a chance unless we hired people who knew the industry. Luckily, we found ourselves quickly connected to some of the top talent in town. A few of those initial conversations with key staffers stand out. We sat down with Jill Gubin, our first advertising salesperson, at Starbucks in Olivette. She flipped through the magazine, pointing out things she liked and things she didn't. She told us about some of the influential people she knew in town. (Her trademark was that she always knew everyone's phone number by heart.) “Sure, I'll help you,” she said. At that moment, we felt like we had struck gold. Here was an experienced person in the industry who wanted to come work for us, a new pub with no ads. Within just a couple of months, she already had sold dozens of ads for the next issue, and had taught us how to set up our advertising production team.

The Write Stuff Kelly: At that time, we were writing everything ourselves, and because we were adding pages with each issue, we needed writers. We met Cristy Miller, who was finishing up her degree in nutrition. Cristy was the perfect fit because of our healthfocused content, but quickly became an integral part of the ALIVE team and our managing editor. She helped us build the editorial department from the ground up and approach our operations, which were rapidly becoming more complex. We also hired Natalie Kurz, an editor with national experience, to help take our content to the next level. Elizabeth: To complete our core team, we really needed a strong photographer, especially for our covers. I knew some local 78

photographers from when I was a Talent Plus actor, so I called up Rick Gould and asked if he'd help us. He was reluctant at first, but, after seeing how excited (and crazy) we all were, he agreed to give us a shot (literally).

Face Time Kelly: It wasn't long before we met Darin Slyman. Darin had been working in the fashion, media and photography fields for years and had contacts to whom he recommended we reach out. We were considering local celebrities to shoot for our first official magazine cover, and he suggested Heidi Glaus, who was on “Show Me St. Louis” at the time. I remember feeling nervous calling KSDK—back then, no one really knew who we were, and we were not confident media types yet! But, she agreed, and I remember that first cover shoot with Heidi at Suzy Gorman's Midtown studio very well. Rick photographed Heidi for a few hours, then took our first staff headshots. Rick continued to shoot all of our big features and every cover for the first few years. We owe a lot to him; he really helped us set a tone for how we wanted to approach editorial photography, and taught us all a hell of a lot about how to concept larger-scale shoots and to communicate with all the creatives we would come to work with over the years.

A Focus On Fashion Elizabeth: In 2004, with more and more fashion boutiques opening around town, it felt important to add a style component to the magazine. Our readers, who were 25 to 55 and mostly women, weren't getting info on where to find the trends locally—but the stores were there, and we felt fashion was just not getting the attention it deserved. Kelly: So, we went on a search for a fashion writer. I put ads out in the RFT and got scores of emails from aspiring writers. Jill Manoff was one of those. I asked her to write a “how-to” on at-home pedicures as a test. As good as it was, it was really her amazingly written cover letter and memoir piece she had already submitted that landed her an interview. And, once we met her, we knew she had to be a part of the family. Her trademark effervescence, wit and smart writing launched our fashion department, which soon became a central part of ALIVE's identity. Elizabeth: As ALIVE started to grow, it felt like the business we were creating was happening at the right time in the right place. Saint Louis City was starting to see a real renaissance—loft developments Downtown were opening their doors and selling their units at a rapid pace, more fashion boutiques were opening each year (and in more neighborhoods) and more independent restaurants were emerging around the city. St. Louis was changing, and we saw that ALIVE could—and should—change along with it. There was a new opportunity emerging to speak to the young professionals and active people who were out and about, engaged in the community and enjoying the momentum that was building around the city. Kelly: We became a cheerleader for St. Louis...and a mirror. We felt like we were just showing St. Louisans what was cool and exciting about their own city. We took that on as our job, and people really started to respond to that approach. It's no secret that St. Louisans can sometimes be down on the city—not seeing all the great things we have here. To be honest, we get a thrill from changing that perspective a bit. By 2004, we had expanded our editorial content significantly, adding stories on local personalities, cultural events, fashion and, of course, party pics.

ALIVE and Growing 2005-2008 On The Scene Elizabeth: It was around that time that marketing and public relations guru Cheresse Pentella reached out to me, and we scheduled lunch at Sekisui across from our office on Grand. She was very glamorous in her fur coat—she looked like a supermodel. Because we were drawing the attention of the young professional and fashionable crowd, she thought we should consider throwing parties. Sipping my Diet Coke, I sat there hoping that we could pull off an event half as cool as she thought we could. She asked us to be a partner on a party she was planning for her client, Miso. We called it “Miso is ALIVE.” Kelly: I remember the excitement of having about 400 people arrive to that event, and for the first time, really seeing our readers en masse. They came out in droves, and we realized that events would be a big part of ALIVE's future. We hired Maggie Rasp Pearson, who helped us get a marketing and events department off the ground. Elizabeth: The first party we actually produced was “Rock It Like It's Haute” at Pepper Lounge, which was also just a few years old at the time, and was the hottest place to party in town. Nightlife godfather Amit Dhawan and DJ Andrew Mullins helped us piece together our first event strategy. Not only were we producing a party, but we were also going to put on a fashion show. I remember Andrew pointing to Pepper's VIP area and explaining how the stage would be set up for the fashion show. It all seemed like a dream—who were we to be putting up stages and taking on fashion shows? At that time, there really weren't fashion shows happening in St. Louis, at least not for the 20- and 30-somethings. But, the party and show were a hit! The crowd loved seeing the local models on stage and seeing the pictures in the magazine the next month. Thankfully, this was the first of many events we produced with Amit, and our combined passion for putting on good events has changed the way St. Louis throws parties. Kelly: We assembled a board to help us answer some questions we were having around our place in the market. At one board meeting later that year, we sat around our conference table talking about ways we could further differentiate ourselves from the other lifestyle magazines in the city. We felt like something we really loved to do—and that we did well—was featuring people, so we decided to have national celebrities on the cover of every single issue. I remember walking out of that meeting feeling excited by the challenge, but a bit daunted. The only national celebs with a St. Louis tie that people were really talking about were Nelly and John Goodman. (This was before “The Office” or “Mad Men”). But, the hunt began, and soon, wrangling and interviewing some of the hottest up-and-coming entertainers for our covers became a favorite part of my job. And, most of the time, they were just as excited to be spotlighted in a glossy fashion and culture magazine in their hometown.

A saint louis fashion week Elizabeth: Meanwhile, our events were taking off. We hired Damon Johnson, who I'd known since middle school, to help us build a real marketing and events department. We were talking with Ecco Domani about how we could work together to market their wines. Within the hour, Liquid Style, our signature fall fashion event, was born. We hosted the first one in fall 2006 over the pool at Chase Park Plaza. It was our biggest fashion show to date, and we had all the local boutiques showing their collections. The turnout was insane; about 800 people were there. We were praying for no rain, and for no hitches, and we got it. Thankfully, we worked with event expert Sam Foxman. I'll never forget walking out onto the stage, heart beating, legs trembling. I distinctly remember seeing our new friends Sharon and Kim Tucci, Susan Sherman and Andy and Kellie Trivers, as well as our board members, Karen Carroll, Craig Kaminer and Stacie Mullen. They were looking up at us beaming, and their smiles made me feel like I could actually get the words out. Kelly: That really showed us that fashion was going to be our thing. We were already owning it in print, but we set out to help support and build an actual fashion community here. Attilio and Jill made it their mission, and soon, we were bringing together the local boutiques regularly for fashion shows, integrating fashion shows into other parties and hosting launch events for the boutiques that were opening. I remember the day Attilio said, “We should just have a Fashion Week!” Elizabeth and I were half thinking (half hoping) that he was joking because we were already producing an event every month as it was. But he wasn't, and within the year, we hosted the first Saint Louis Fashion Week, which featured five days of events and brought in national designers and brands. It became a major part of our business, and helped our big clients reach the fashion-conscious set of STL.

Surviving and Thriving 2009-2012 Elizabeth: Then came November 2008. You probably remember it as well as we do. It was the culmination of the financial crisis that affected everyone. Our big corporate partners halted their marketing plans, and our small business friends and partners were on shaky ground, which meant we were, too. We felt that it was only going to get worse, and knew we had to make a plan—and fast. Kelly: The only way we were going to stay “ALIVE” was if we could help our clients stay in business. On a Saturday that November, we sat around the table at our office in Maryland Plaza and talked about what had to be done. We pored over budgets and created Plan Bs, Cs, Ds…I think we ended up on something like a Plan G. It was going to be tough, and we knew it. Nothing seemed certain, and none of the possibilities seemed ideal. Elizabeth: We hunkered down and asked ourselves the tough questions: How do we remain relevant? How do we help our clients through this difficult time? That's how we approached our survival. We had a lot of great partners and advertisers who considered us an important part of their staying in business, too. Together, we're now back on track to thrive. We just feel so fortunate to work with such good people.

A Fresh Approach Kelly: As we were rebuilding, we met David Hsia, an art director at Momentum. David talked to us about our magazine's design and identity, and together, we began working on a new look for the magazine. We added more color and gave ALIVE a new logo, one that was more unique and gave us a stronger identity. Elizabeth: With the print business suffering, we also had the time to finally focus on overhauling our website, which was years behind where it should have been. We worked with Jen Rieger and Chris Rubin de la Borbolla of 963 Collective on the new alivemag.com, which relaunched on June 1, 2010, with all the capabilities we had wished for. I remember poring over the wireframes that we'd drawn up and making decisions about what widgets we needed and where. It was one of the most exciting product launches I can remember, and it led to spinoffs like ALIVE Daily Fix, the ALIVE Blog Posse and ALIVE Dates.

Looking Ahead Elizabeth: Over the last two years, we've been working to really improve our print and web products to give readers more of what they expect from ALIVE. We're excited about the new look we're launching this month (kudos, Associate Art Director Kristin Kellogg!) and to be expanding our editorial pages (with some very exciting additions) under the direction of Jennifer Dulin Wiley. Kelly: We're insanely lucky to have an amazing team of staffers with us every day at the ALIVE HQ—our editors Jennifer Dulin Wiley and Gwen Ragno, designers Kristin Kellogg and Stephanie Terry, our advertising rock stars Brigid Pritchard, Gina DeGenova and Molly Ross, our marketing and events manager Giana Calvello, Daily Fix coordinator Brian Donahoe, business and office manager Ellen Ramey and contributing creative director David Hsia. I can't thank all of our contributing writers and photographers enough— we are so lucky to work with them every month. And, being around this long means we have some kick-ass ALIVE alumni around to continue working with in new ways. Elizabeth: It's impossible to really tell the whole story of the last 10 years...the word count has to be managed at some point. Kelly: What about the experience at the Playboy Mansion, the retreats in Miami or the annual retreat party buses? Elizabeth: That's “off the record.” But, we can promise a night to remember on April 13... Kelly: Shameless plug: Road trip it Downtown to Peabody Opera House for the biggest party of ALIVE's lifetime. Then, just stay tuned, as we imagine the next decade brings even more exciting things for our city—and we intend to be a part of it!

To complete your French fantasy, order the classic croque-monsieur: Jones Heritage Farms ham, Swiss cheese, béchamel sauce and whole-grain mustard on toast. It shares the menu with delicacies like brûlée French toast with blueberry compote and waffles with

cappuccino-mascarpone cream. Or, let Executive Chef Fabrizio Schenardi transport you to his native Italy via a breakfast pizza, topped with tomato sauce, asparagus, Parmesan cheese and sunny-side-up eggs. Score a table by the floor-to-ceiling windows, or better yet, on the Sky Terrace if the weather cooperates—and you'll be treated to stunning views of the Arch, the Old Cathedral and our own venerable waterfront. No yachts, but Cielo does offer the occasional celebrity sighting.

Signing a waiver for the ménage à trois hot chocolate isn't really required. But, it's true that owner Araceli Kopiloff has hit on a dangerous combination of spicy chocolate, strong espresso, whipped cream and the spirit of your choice. Intoxicating libations aside, the pastries can also induce a case of throwing caution to the wind. And, then there are the trinkets from France, the handmade baubles, headbands and decorations for sale on the retail displays scattered throughout the dining room. Once you've fallen under its spell, this charmingly eclectic Lafayette Park café is hard to escape in oh-so-many ways. On weekends, the kitchen opens at 8am with pastries, frittatas and croissants. But, if you can hold off until 11am, you'll be treated to the weekend jazz brunch, with jazz and swing bands in an intimate setting and additional lunch items on the menu. Regardless of what time you arrive, the quiches and soufflés are a constant, in flavors like tomato mozzarella and spinach goat cheese.

Next Weekend…

After brunch Shop Local Saturdays have been a sight to behold ever since Soulard Farmers' Market started in 1779—though the weekend chef demo had yet to be invented. By comparison, the Tower Grove Farmers' Market, which re-opens on May 5, is a spring chicken. Old and new mingle on The Hill, where a shopping stroll leads from designer sweaters to housemade pasta, fresh cannoli and locally cured prosciutto.

Aya Sofia Try a traditional Turkish breakfast of cheeses, olives and tomatoes, or go the (slightly) more American route with a döner omelet at this exotic Sunday brunch (6671 Chippewa, 314.645.9919). Benton Park Café Rise and shine, because if you oversleep, the line will be out the door at this neighborhood hangout. Don't worry, though—the friendly staff will make

Breakfast Pizza

sure to save you a breakfast pizza (1900 Arsenal St., 314.771.7200). Black Bear Bakery These traditional artisan bread bakers offer a comfy weekend brunch, and they make their vegan friends at home with specialties like dairyfree muffins (2639 Cherokee St., 314.771.2236). Lemp Mansion This family-style chicken dinner pulls out all the stops—including applesauce, rolls, mac-and-cheese, ham, corn…and yes, it's on the table before noon (3322 DeMenil Place, 314.664.8024). Lily's If you love salsa on your huevos, the authentic Mexican breakfast at this family-run eatery will make you feel right at home (4601 S. Kingshighway Blvd., 314.352.1894).

Local Harvest Café Slingers with vegan chili and farm-fresh eggs? You betcha, and that's just the tip of the iceberg at this locavore-friendly café (3137 Morgan Ford, 314.772.8815). Molly's What could be better than biscuits and gravy? Buttermilk biscuits with andouille sausage gravy, that's what. Authentic Creole favorites pepper the entire brunch menu (816 Geyer Ave., 314.241.6200). Vin de Set The Sunday brunch buffet changes weekly at this rooftop bistro, but the buildyour-own omelet, prime rib and dessert stations never seem to disappear (2017 Chouteau Ave., 314.241.8989).

West End

Country Kitchen Café Osage | 4605 Olive St., 314.454.6868 Much of the food we eat travels 1,300 miles to reach

our plates. At Café Osage, some of it barely travels 1,300 feet. A garden across the street grows fresh produce for the restaurant during the spring, summer and fall, and a rooftop herb garden adds extra flavor. True, some provisions arrive by truck, like the bison products from Bowood Farm in Clarksville, MO, which also grows most of the plants sold in the greenhouse adjoining the café. Other products (seasonal and organic whenever possible) are sourced from local farmers and producers. The exquisitely simple breakfast menu highlights the natural

flavors of the eggs, bacon, chicken and dairy products. Take the biscuits and gravy: pillowy puffs of chives and cheddar are topped generously with creamed chicken, mushrooms and leeks. Whatever you order, get a side of the Bowood bison sausage. If you like it—and you will—ask if it's available frozen over in the retail shop. As the garden store gears up for spring, the ambiance in the café's outdoor seating area flourishes, too; it's one of the best places in town to get a flower fix. But, be forewarned—it's hard to leave without a little something to green up your life.

After brunch Go Boutique-ing and spend the afternoon browsing the independent shops in the CWE. Trees, fresh air, designer clothes, shoes, bags, menswear, jewelry…it's all here at boutiques like Ivy Hill, Mary Jane's, Moris and 10denza.

Next Weekend… 2Schae Café You can order breakfast any day of the week, but only on weekends do the eight-plus flavors of pancakes hit the griddle (275 Union Blvd., 314.361.5333). Bixby's You can't beat classic, locavore dishes in the atmosphere of the History Museum (5700 Lindell Blvd., 314.361.7313). Eau Bistro The only thing that could make this Sunday buffet better is if it came with a key to a guest room for an afternoon nap (212 N. Kingshighway Blvd., 314.454.9000).

Salt This 2012 James Beard award nominee offers a few popular dinner dishes on the brunch menu, like porkand-fennel meatballs and duck-fat frites (4356 Lindell Blvd., 314.932.5787). Scape The Sunday Champagne Brunch rises a notch above the ordinary with treats like farmer's cheese pancakes with lemon curd (48 Maryland Plaza, 314.361.7227). The Scottish Arms Come on in, laddie, for a bloody Mary and the Highland Hangover: Scotch eggs, baby bridies, toad in the hole and smoked salmon (8 S. Sarah St., 314.535.0551).

Next Weekend… Blueberry Hill The décor is what makes this a favorite weekend destination—though there's something to be said for a restaurant that offers a side of tater tots (6504 Delmar Blvd., 314.727.4444).

Fruit Crêpe City CoffeeHouse & CrÊperie After seeing the dozens of crêpe fillings available in this popular weekend hangout, everything else—even Belgian waffles and house-baked pastries—fades into the background (36 N. Brentwood Blvd., 314.862.2489). Lu Lu Seafood Restaurant You know the dim sum is authentic when the four main chefs hail from four different regions of China, and the dining room is likewise full of native speakers (8224 Olive Blvd., 314.997.3108).

Veggie Hash, Half and Half

Coffee and Confidence half and half | 8135 Maryland Ave., 314.725.0729 With a menu that's half breakfast, half lunch,

you'd be hard-pressed to find a more perfect place for weekend brunch. Owner Mike Randolph and crew are so confident of the winning formula, they go a little crazy—putting things like Brussels sprouts in the veggie hash. And, the chicken livers? From what we're told, they're good here. We can, however, personally vouch for the citrus and cinnamon-sugar doughnuts. There's also nothing halfhearted about the restaurant's dedica-

tion to coffee under barista Mike Marquard. The two rotating blends, usually roasted locally by Kaldi's, are served according to strength and brewing methods: espresso, cappuccino, latte, hand-brewed drip, woodneck cloth-filtered, AeroPress or the bottomless diner mug. If you're still only halfway convinced that this bright, open spot is the place to start your weekend, visit the blog and find out which coffees are in the grinder and what special delicacies are on the brunch menu.

while you're in the neighborhood Cozy Up at St. Louis' 1920s-era movie palace, the Tivoli Theatre, for an indie or foreign film that won't be at the megaplex anytime soon. The medium is different, but the passion is the same at Subterranean Books, where the staff stocks quirky literature from small presses and cult classics to indie bestsellers and more.

Oceano Bistro It's a Sunday brunch fit for King Triton, with seafood in every direction: salads, soups, flatbreads, fritattas, hash and even the hollandaise (44 N. Brentwood Blvd., 314.721.9400). Pomme Café and Wine Bar In this age of industrial everything, when a restaurant says it cracks your eggs, you know it's serious about simplicity and quality (44 N. Central Ave., 314.721.8801). The Restaurant at the RitzCarlton Special occasions call for a Sunday splurge, and this brunch buffet delivers, from caviar to a dessert selection that must be seen to be believed (100 Carondelet Plaza, 314.719.1450). Sasha's Wine Bar The definition of relaxation is a leisurely Sunday brunch, wine glass in hand, overlooking an urban park (706 Demun Ave., 314.863.7274). Winslow's Home The farmto-table relationship doesn't get much tighter than this, and the kitschy country store reinforces the wholesome vibe (7213 Delmar Blvd., 314.725.7559).

No Place Like Home Home Wine Kitchen | 7322 Manchester Road, 314.802.7676 Cassandra Vires has a knack for translating food from the rarified world of chefdom into a simple pleasure for her customers. In her hands, highfalutin' ingredients like duck confit, arugula and truffle oil take on a comforting familiarity. The owner and executive chef can do the reverse, too, elevating untrendy dishes like Eggs Benedict with grits, tasso, spinach and spiced hollandaise. On the newly launched spring brunch menu, Vires and her husband and co-owner, Joshua Renbarger, are expanding on playful combinations that customers are already familiar

with, like the balsamic chicken and rosemary waffle (a popular dish that, happily, is a holdover on the new menu). Just a few examples to whet the appetite: bread pudding French toast, blueberry pancakes with lemon and buttermilk syrup and shortbread sea-salt biscuits with Meyer lemon jam. As the name suggests, there are wines available, of course (at decent prices, too), but it's almost impossible not to fall for the Bloody Wilbur: bacon vodka, tomato juice and pickled asparagus. Toto, we're definitely not in Kansas anymore.

Next Weekend… Boardwalk Café Continue the party from the night before with a Fiesta Skillet: home fries, eggs, chopped sirloin and Tex-Mex topping. No lunch, just breakfast on Sundays (600 E. Lockwood Ave., 314.963.0013). Cyrano's A decision to have Sunday brunch at Cyrano's is really a ploy for the World's Fair éclair… the caramel brioche bread pudding… and the red velvet cupcakes (603 E. Lockwood Ave., 314.963.3232). Highway 61 Roadhouse The Cajun-style comfort food Sunday buffet offers everything from catfish to beignets to jambalaya. But, with true Southern hospitality, the kitchen will also whip you up pancakes, eggs and omelets—and pour a cocktail while you wait (34 S. Old Orchard Ave., 314.968.0061). Lubeley's Bakery & Deli This German-style bakery has been around long enough to know that its customers want to hang out and savor their doughnuts, strudels, stollens and breakfast pastries in the shop (7815 Watson Road, 314.961.7160).

Some local cocktail go-tos are taking the trend a step further and planting their own gardens onsite to spice up what the kitchen and the bar can create. Sanctuaria in The Grove has a garden surrounding its outdoor patio, which produces herbs like mint, lemon verbena and sage, among others, for the custom creations of Bar Manager Matt Seiter and crew. And, Blood and Sand Downtown has installed a “grow wall” behind the bar inside the restaurant to supply fresh herbs. Plans are also in the works for an outdoor garden for larger crops, according to co-owner TJ Vytlacil. Salt in the Central West End has a bevy of herbs and veggies sprouting in planters and in the green space surrounding its stately property, thanks, in large part, to the help of local farmer Greg Pusczek. The yield includes multiple types of mints and three varieties of basil, among other herbs, which frequently make their way onto Bar Manager Matt Obermark's drink menu in creations like the Sheboygan Sunrise. This garden libation, which he created with Jason Reed, features Nolet's gin, St. Germain, lime juice, honey syrup and Bitter Truth creole bitters, swizzled with mint and cucumber and topped with ginger beer. The result is a verdant and spicy drink that tastes like spring in a glass. Sure, some of these herbs and veggies are available at the local supermarket, but by the time they pass through all of the hands necessary to make it to market, they can be a little worse for wear. Tending a garden takes a bit of work, but Obermark says having one just a few steps from the bar ensures his drinks are as vital and delicious as possible. Let's just say, the proof is in the tasting.

Asparagus It might not be as sexy as the tomato or as versatile as the carrot, but asparagus can be pretty delicious. Whether it's boiled, grilled, roasted or seared, it's certainly one spring veggie worth salivating over. Follow these quick tips, and you're sure to become a veg-ilante. Recipe Ideas • Roast or grill with some olive oil, salt, pepper and lemon juice. • Blanch for a few minutes then add to a salad with plenty of summer fruit. • Combine with some blue cheese and cherry tomatoes for a twist on bruschetta. Pro Tips Prep: Cut the woody ends off 1.5 inches from the bottom. Roasting: Spread across cooking sheet in a single layer. Grilling: Wrap in aluminum foil slathered with seasonings. Boiling: Don't overdo it—no one likes soggy asparagus. Find it Locally • Soulard Farmers' Market • Local Harvest Grocery • Tower Grover Farmers' Market

Spring in St. Louis is the perfect time for a charming picnic in Forest Park, Tower Grove or the riverfront. Here's all you need to dine al fresco in style. Many include plates, wine glasses, napkins, silverware, salt and pepper shakers, a corkscrew and a tablecloth (Bed Bath & Beyond, 53 Brentwood Promenade Ct., 314.961.4900). Add a little sophistication to your meal with a Brillat-Savarin Affine Brie paired with Segura Viudas Aria Estate Brut, a sparkling Spanish wine (The Wine & Cheese Place, 7435 Forsyth Blvd., 314.727.8788). Enjoy the season's juiciest offerings with a custommade fruit platter, with fresh watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, strawberries and grapes (Straub's Fine Grocers, 8282 Forsyth Blvd., 314.725.2121). Mayor's Ball, A Mardi Gras Masquerade

February 17, City Hall Rotunda The merriment of Mardi Gras overtook me early this year, when I received an invitation to attend the Mayor's Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball. Well-known for being a spectacular see-and-be-seen event (feathered masks and all), I knew this enchanting ball would be one for the books, and I was right. The City Hall Rotunda was bursting with energy and life, as the dressed-tothe-nines crowd mixed and mingled in celebration of the second largest Mardi Gras festival in the country. Regal green and purple lighting bathed the historic hall—aptly highlighting the many court jesters, aerial artists and more, who entertained for the evening. Circus Flora's performers stole the show, as did the many St. Louis influentials roaming the court, including the honorable Mayor Francis Slay, KPLR 11's Melanie Moon, KTVI Fox 2's John Pertzborn, Ted Powers, Stacy Hastie, Timothy Lorson and more. Proceeds from the 2012 ball benefited the Mardi Gras Foundation, which has granted more than $120,000 to the Soulard neighborhood for community improvement projects since its creation in 2003. –Jennifer Dulin Wiley,

What is your current frame of mind? Energized and anxious. When and where are you happiest? When I'm with my immediate family. What is your favorite smell? Lavender. What is one word that describes you? Involved. What did you eat for breakfast today? Orange juice and half a bagel. Passionate to a fault. What trait do you most admire in others? The combination of sincerity and transparency. Who or what is the greatest love of your life? A tie between my husband, David, and my daughter, Meera. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? More balance. Which living person do you most admire? My sisters.

What is your most treasured possession? My Tiffany & Co. ring that I bought to celebrate my independence. And, my wedding ring. What is your greatest fear? Not realizing when I've failed. What is your favorite hobby? Traveling, playing tennis and…is getting a massage a hobby? Who are your heroes in real life? Eleanor Williams, my spiritual advisor from Los Angeles. If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive, who would it be? Eleanor Roosevelt. What are you most looking forward to? St. Louis becoming more inclusive. What is one thing you wish would happen? That everyone would take a Sociology 101 course so they would know how organizations and communities are built. What is something you still want to learn? Oh gosh, so much…how to raise a lot of money. In another life, you'd be? Someone who lived a simple life. What is one thing you'd like to see happen before you die? A stronger sense of community by recognizing that we are more connected to each other than we think. If you could say something to your younger self, what would it be? Travel more, and experience as many different cultures as you can before you have other commitments.

ALIVE MAGAZINE | April 2012

If you were to die and come back as a person or thing, who or what would it would be? It would be fun to come back as a tropical fish living in warm sea water (I still love watching “The Little Mermaid”). What is your greatest extravagance? Hosting parties at my home. Where would you like to live? Within walking distance of the beach. What is your favorite journey? Traveling to India and Africa with my parents. I learned a lot about our family history and culture on those trips. What is something interesting that you just learned? A mentor just said to me, “Your life experiences, regardless of whether they are good or bad, give you texture. And, texture is a desirable trait.” Interview by Elizabeth Tucker Photograph by Wesley Law ‘Archetypes’ are off-the-cuff interviews with St. Louis' most inspiring, well-known personalities based on the 19th century Parisian parlor game known as the Proust Questionnaire.
