By D’Marco Farr

I have done a lot of things in my life. Played pro football. Won a Super Bowl. Done a TV show. And now ESPN radio. But here’s one thing I never thought I’d ever do: work out next to a 68-year-old grandmother. Her name is Sonja Nelson-Stough, and she is in amazing shape. She and I both work out at 20 Minutes to Fitness, a place that provides a medically based form of fitness training that takes just 20 minutes a week. But before you start thinking I have joined some sort of geriatric fitness club, let me add this: In all my years in the NFL,

Okay, I may lift a few pounds more than Sonja and most of the other folks here. But muscle failure is muscle failure. As medical research has proven again and again, achieving it is the first step to toward growing stronger and healthier – no matter what your age or physical condition. The truth is, the 20 Minute to Fitness workout can be fine-tuned for people of any fitness level – from overweight kids, to elite high school athletes, to stay-at-home moms, to timestarved professionals, to 80-year-old grandmas, to former pro athletes like me.

I never had a strength-training regimen as tough, or as effective, as this one. Don’t believe it? You can watch I’ll explain. When I played for the Rams, strength training was a numbers game. We were required to lift a certain amount of weight, a certain number of reps, three times a week. I was spending nine hours a week in a gym, building muscle, but damaging my joints. But at 20 Minutes to Fitness, the medical approach is completely different. Here, I work out on special physical therapy equipment. Everything we do is in ultra slow motion. My personal coach doesn’t really care how many reps I do, or even how much weight I’m lifting. All she is concerned about is that I achieve muscle failure – that I get to the point where I can’t lift another ounce.

a video of me doing the workout at 20minutestofitness.com, or 101espn.com. Sonja’s there, too! You’ll see what I’m talking about. To any of you skeptics out there who say you can’t possibly get fit by working out this way for only 20 minutes a week, I have only three words to say: Just try it.

NFL Super Bowl Champion and Rams’ broadcaster D’Marco Farr shares something in common with Sonja Nelson-Stough, a 68-year-old ballroom dancer from Ballwin.

For more information on 20 Minutes to Fitness, call its studios in Clayton (314-863-7836) or Chesterfield (636-536-1504) or visit www.20minutestofitness.com.

By Sonja Nelson-Stough

So D’Marco Farr never thought he’d be working out alongside a 68-year-old woman. Well, I can do him one better than that: I never thought I’d work out AT ALL – much less next to a Super Bowl champion. You see, for the first 65 years of my life, I hated the gym. Oh, I tried. I would tag along with my husband, Larry, when he went to play squash, intending to work out.

For the past three years, Larry and I have worked out every Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. at 20 Minutes to Fitness’ Chesterfield studio. A half hour later, we’re done for the week. And that’s a good thing. Because in addition to my golf game, I’ve got tap lessons twice a week and ballroom dance competitions to prepare for – not to mention an occasional friendly arm wrestling contest.

But I dreaded it all day long. And I was miserable the entire time. As I started thinking about retirement three years ago, I realized my attitude toward physical fitness was going to have to change. I was on the verge of having osteoporosis, and was getting a little thick around the middle. I could see where I was headed, and that’s NOT how I wanted to spend my retirement years. Then I read an article in a national golf magazine about how 20 Minutes to Fitness had changed the life of another woman who felt like I did. The rest, as they say, is history.

For more information on 20 Minutes to Fitness, call its studios in Clayton (314-863-7836) or Chesterfield (636-536-1504) or visit www.20minutestofitness.com.

I’m absolutely better at all of them, thanks to 20 Minutes to Fitness. My strength, my stamina, my balance and flexibility, my posture and my energy are all better than they’ve been in years. That’s what having strong muscles does for a person. More importantly, I’ve found an exercise regimen that I can stick with. I will do this for the rest of my life.

And by the way, D’Marco, whenever you’re ready for a rematch, just say the word.

letter from the editor

Y

ou know the holidays have arrived in St. Louis when KEZK’s playlist switches over to a perpetual loop of holiday hits, which was happening as we went to press on this issue. Not that I’m complaining—I’m one of those über-festive folks whose all-holiday, all-the-time music mentality keeps passengers in my car either entertained or annoyed from Black Friday to New Year’s Day. In addition to inspiring me to spread holiday cheer, the seasonal soundtrack gets me in the mood to start seeking out the perfect presents for people I love.

So, with Deano as my wingman and an eggnog latte in tow, I hit the shops that carry unique gifts, of which St. Louis has scores. Luckily, unique doesn’t have to mean break-the-bank, which should comfort local gift givers—a recent survey of St. Louis shoppers found that most local shoppers plan to cut their holiday gift budgets by shopping for less expensive gifts (43 percent plan to spend less than $500 on gifts and 78 percent plan to spend $1,000 or less). And although about two-thirds said they planned to do some holiday shopping online, the poll showed that most will still do it the old-fashioned way—by hitting the retail stores, twice-checked shopping lists in hand. With those things in mind, we bring you an issue stuffed with gift-giving advice fit for the times. We think you’ll appreciate our guide of “Hot Gifts Under $100” (p.80)— arranged by price point, this present-packed resource considers budget-friendly finds for everyone on your list, from the fashion-forward friend to quirky coworkers. To make your shopping excursions more organized, we compiled an authoritative guide to the St. Louis shopping scene (“Shop Saint Louis,” p.88). Eliminating some of the guesswork, we even called ahead to shop owners for the inside scoop on what they consider their hottest gift items this season. Other ideas abound throughout the issue, from the ubiquitous stocking-stuffer scarf (p.52) to the best dresses fit for any holiday celebration (p.50) Speaking of gifts, for an up-close conversation with a St. Louis girl made good, turn to p.78 for an interview with Pooja Kumar, a St. Louis native whose film Bollywood Beats showcased her talents at the St. Louis International Film Festival last month.

Happy holidays from ALIVE’s family to yours,

Headshot by Tuan Lee.

Autumn Sij photographed by Egan O’Keefe; Kristian Cortez photographed by Attilio D’Agostino; Moira Dorsey photographed by Bob Pitts; Megan McCalla photographed by Attilio D’Agostino.

An interning stylist for ALIVE fashion editorials since September 2008, Autumn has worked backstage at Saint Louis Fashion Week for three seasons and recently added fashion writing to her résumé. Aside from immersing herself in all things fashion, she also teaches ballet at a local dance studio and coaches a high school dance team. This month she put her styling skills and shopping savvy to work for “Hot Gifts Under $100” (p.80).

Hair designer, clothing stylist, fashion writer and runway coordinator are just a few of the positions Moira Dorsey currently holds. A hair artist, stylist and writer for online magazine Corridor40, she’s a regular fashion assistant on ALIVE’s fashion photo shoots and is stoked to be contributing as a writer for a second issue. A self-proclaimed shopaholic, Moira was proud of the fact that she didn’t spend one dime while conducting research for “Hot Gifts Under $100” (p.80), which involved carousing the racks of many of St. Louis’ hottest boutiques. It’s tough job, but somebody has to do it…

A part of this issue’s contributing editorial team, Kris happily reports he had fun shopping for “Hot Gifts Under $100” (p.80). When he’s not designing and sewing for his ready-to-wear line, Kristian Cortez, he writes and sketches stories in the world of graphic novels. Kris is also a stylist and says, “When it comes to my style DNA, I’m all about luxe and keeping things modern.”

A recent graduate of the University of MissouriColumbia, Megan McCalla received her degree in Magazine Journalism. She’s freelanced for various fashion publications, worked as a lead dresser for Saint Louis Fashion Week and is an editor for Corridor40. She loves vintage shopping, so putting her in charge of specialty and vintage shops for “Hot Gifts Under $100” (p.80) was right up her alley, and she enjoyed exploring the city and discovering new St. Louis shopping hotspots.

Westward Expansion Customers blaze a trail toward Wildwood’s Table Three restaurant. By Amy de la Hunt | Photo by Josh Monken

{ The Buzz }

And the winner is…

The lamb porterhouse entree at Table Three

CONTEMPORARY CUISINE Williams owns Cuisine d’Art in Creve Coeur, a lunchtime eatery that’s an offshoot of her 16-year-old catering company of the same name, but Table Three is her first foray into evening dining. Given her long history in the business, it’s no surprise she and Chef John Buchanan have come up with creative touches like quiche in puff pastry and a meltingly tender pate aux choux crust on the fruit tart. The onion soup hits the spot—lots of caramelized onions—and leads off both the lunch and dinner menus. Midday fare

is simple, mostly salads and sandwiches; the dinner menu offers a wider variety of entrees plus many versions of flatbread pizzas. Table Three’s cocktail list aims for a light touch that’s fine for happy hour, but the drinks aren’t as food-friendly as the wines. And though it’s not billed as a wine bar, Table Three draws a wine-drinking crowd, from lunch until late in the evening. It’s become a popular place to meet girlfriends for lunch or significant others for dinner, and reservations are a very good idea. Come spring, the meticulously landscaped patio’s the place to be, but for now, ask to be seated in the smaller front dining room, where fabrics in warm red and browns buffer some of the hubbub of a full house (16765 Main St., Wildwood, 636.458.4333).

BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD Sammy Scott’s Sandwiches & More is now open in Creve Coeur. A creation by culinary partners David Miller (grandson of restaurateur/developer Lester Miller), Don Tamillo, Anthony Dahl and Tim Laughlin, the restaurant serves familiar and creative takes on the classic sandwich and panini, as well as homemade salads, wraps and soups. 12766 Olive Blvd., Creve Coeur, 314.439.5100.

WE’RE ALMOST FOAMING AT THE MOUTH The long-awaited Foam Coffee & Beer is now open at Jefferson and Cherokee. By day, the bar-slash-coffeehouse serves coffee drinks and snacks—at night, it turns its focus to beer. 3359 Jefferson Ave., Benton Park, 314.772.2100.

38 ALIVE STL DECEMber 2009

Eric Kelly from Scape restaurant took home the title of ALIVE’s Top Chef at the All-American Throwdown: Search for St. Louis’ Best Burger on Sunday, October 25. Chef Kelly beat out five other talented local chefs in a close competition and impressed the judges and event attendees (who voted on their fave) with his fresh take on the burger. “It’s a classic, so I thought, don’t try and reinvent it. I took the basics and built on each of them to create the most mouth-watering burger on the planet,” says Chef Kelly. Combining sirloin, chuck and scraps from a dry-aged prime striploin, Kelly seasoned the beef with onion and black pepper and then cooked it on a woodburning grill. A homemade English muffin, Tillamook cheddar and homemade pickles from a family recipe rounded out his amazing creation, “The 48 Prime Burger.”

Rise Together Companion and eight local chefs collaborate to create delicious dishes. By Amy De La Hunt | Photos courtesy of Twist

> You don’t see too many chefs encouraging diners to visit another person’s restaurant. That is, unless you’re Josh Allen, co-owner of Companion and creator of CollaBREADtive, a program that brings together eight St. Louis chefs to create custom breads and use them in special menu items to serve in their restaurants. The series, now in its second year, kicked off in September with Chef Maurice Reed of Eclipse Restaurant and his Frosted Flakeencrusted French toast, made with Companion’s sweet potato country bread. All three Companion locations, Schnucks, Dierbergs and Straub’s stores will carry the special bread. Creative Campaign The program is the St. Louis bakery’s way of reminding locavores about locally made bread—and the chefs serving it, like Bill Cardwell, who incorporated Companion’s Bavarian pretzels in his dish, which is available until December 6. Companion sells about 2,000 units a day, and each loaf presents an opportunity for Allen to promote partner restaurants. Business aside, CollaBREADtive’s underlying purpose is to spark conversations. That’s why the selection rotates. If you miss the pretzels, no worries. A new bread hits shelves the next day and every six weeks thereafter until late summer 2010. For more info, recipes and to watch a video about the program, visit companionstl.com/collabreadtive.

The CollaBREADtive Chefs

CollaBREADtive chef Bill Cardwell used Companion’s Bavarian pretzels in his Cranberry “Hogwash” Glazed Pork Loin with Apple Slaw and Smoked Gouda. Enjoy the sandwich until December 6 in his restaurants, Cardwell’s at the Plaza and BC’s Kitchen.

Swirl, Sniff, Savor Certified Specialist of Wine Dave Birkenmeier’s best bets and tasty tips for giving, receiving and enjoying wine this season and throughout the year. > People often reach for wine when they need to grab

Certified Specialist of Wine Dave Birkenmeier

a last-minute gift for the holidays. It seems simple: Just spring for the one with the fanciest-looking label or funkiest bottle. Not so fast.

Dave Birkenmeier, manager of Schnucks’ Frontenac location, knows wine can be intimidating—he’s studied the subject for over 20 years. For over three years, Dave has conducted wine classes in his store and has hosted wine classes at over 20 Schnucks locations. Suffice it to say, Birkenmeier knows his Bordeaux…and Zinfandel and Riesling and Cabernet. But don’t worry if you don’t; with his tips, you can give, receive and enjoy wine this holiday season like a seasoned oenophile (20 years of study not required).

wine wisdom 1

Great wine doesn’t have to break the bank.

Great wines are available at every price point and budget. “It all starts with figuring out your budget and what type of wine you enjoy,” says Birkenmeier. “Our store carries all types at all price ranges, so after you decide price, let the wine expert in store go to work for you and help you find the right wine.” wine wisdom 2

When gifting wine, keep the recipient top of mind. Really consider the recipient when wine shopping. Pay attention to the types of wine they select when ordering at a restaurant or the bottles you’ve noticed in their home. Do they lean toward reds or whites? Sweet or dry? “A safe bet for giving is a Chardonnay for a white and a Cabernet for a red,” advises Birkenmeier. wine wisdom 3

Have a newbie wino on your shopping list? Consider keeping the wine local.

Not sure how many bottles you need to buy for your next bash? Do a quick calculation at thatsthespirit.com.

“Missouri wines are great for the person who is just starting out on the wine journey,” says Birkenmeier. “[Missouri wines] cover all areas of the spectrum from sweet to the heavy, full-bodied Norton.” The Show-Me State also makes some excellent dessert and Port wines. wine wisdom 4

When you’re stuck, let the wine aisle or store setup be a clue. “When you’re unsure of what to get, look at the displays in the store,” says Birkenmeier. Special displays highlight fast-moving, popular brands of wine at great prices. Stores would rather not waste floor space on slow-moving products, so these displays are a great guide to what other customers are buying and enjoying. Chances are, you’ll like it, too.

42 ALIVE STL DECEMber 2009

Decant the Dialect This crash course in wine words will have novices speaking like sommeliers just in time for holiday cocktail party convos. Aperitif A wine sipped by itself (sans food) or before a meal to stimulate the appetite. Appellation The defined area where a wine’s grapes were grown. Regulations on delineated areas vary across countries. Brut General term for dry Champagne or sparkling wine, often the driest in the line of wines made by a particular producer. Cult Wine A wine that buyers are willing to pay top dollar to purchase because of its high desirability or rarity. Nebuchadnezzer A giant bottle holding 15 liters (20 standard bottles) of wine. Tannin The tart substance (mostly in red wines) derived from the grape skins, seeds and stems, but also oak barrels. Acts as a natural preservative. Varietal A specific grape type, such as Chardonnay or Merlot.

wine wisdom 5

Complement your holiday feast with the right wine for a flavorful, memorable meal. The right wine can make delicious food truly outstanding. If you’re strapped for time or just need a second opinion on how to pair wine with food, ask an expert. Schnucks stores have wine specialists on hand to help. To get you started, Birkenmeier notes that Sauvignon Blanc and Pino Grigio pair well with light cheeses; Chardonay with heavy cheeses and heavier appetizers. Full-bodied reds complement rich cuts of beef or lamb, while light Pinot Noirs bring out the delicate flavor of turkey. Serving ham? Try Merlot. “Looking for something to go with all that holiday chocolate?” asks Birkenmeier. “Try Cabernet; it goes perfectly with it.”

A Call to Action

Words of Wisdom Kathy Osborn’s five must-read biz books

Regional Business Council Executive Director Kathy Osborn advocates a power-in-numbers approach to strengthening the St. Louis region. By Kristin Stefek Brashares | Photo by Carmen Troesser

> Regional Business Council Executive Director Kathy Osborn has

a passion and vision for St. Louis. Ten years ago, she spearheaded the formation of the RBC, almost single-handedly calling on the St. Louis region’s top business brass to come on board. Since then, Osborn has become a critical connection between presidents and CEOs of 100 of the area’s largest companies. By creating collaborations and partnerships through big businesses, Osborn and the RBC work tirelessly to put plans into action that greatly impact the region’s civic and philanthropic development and enhance the vitality of St. Louis. Here, she talks about community involvement, her commitment to St. Louis and staying ahead of the game in the business world. ALIVE: Growing up, had you always envisioned yourself as a businesswoman? KO: When I was younger, I was quite intrigued by science and aspired to be a scientist. Along the way, my passion for the community overrode that desire. I worked from the time I was 14. In high school and college, I got involved in community work. At that time, in the early 1970s, there was a real focus on getting involved in the community. For me, the challenge was balancing work, school and community activities. Most of my community work was inner-city work, which has really helped in my job today. Some of the things the RBC does center on city issues, so the fact that I have experience in it is an asset. ALIVE: How did your interest in community work lead to a career in business? KO: I’ve had three distinct careers in my life. I didn’t plan it; it just evolved this way. My first was in nonprofit management, then educational administration and now business. What linked them all together is that I realized early on that to get things done, you have to know how to work with and support others to take action, and I’ve been able to do that throughout my career. I’ve always had a keen interest in business.

46 ALIVE STL DECEMber 2009

My background in nonprofit and educational management is a real asset as the RBC takes on initiatives in these areas. ALIVE: Is there an RBC cause that you’re particularly passionate about? KO: I am most passionate about helping to make the region grow and prosper. We are a 16-county region with two rivers, and rivers can divide people. By bringing large employers together from different parts of the region, we can develop a mutual understanding. We have to work together as a region. When I look at any one part of the region, I think about how it affects the entire region. The more we work together collectively, the greater chance we’ll have at being successful on the world stage. ALIVE: Since day one, you’ve helped double membership and increase the amount of contributions (last year, the RBC raised $10.4 million for United Way). You’ve clearly dedicated much of your life to making the St. Louis region a better place. What appeals to you about the area? KO: St. Louis is a city that’s large enough that there’s all the culture and sports and richness that you could have in any city. It’s also a size that you can really make a difference. Here, if you stand up and say, “Let’s get something done,” you can make that happen, and your contributions will make a difference. One thing that I very distinctly remember at a young age is that I always wanted to make a difference. That desire has been a huge part of my career development. We often arrive at places we don’t necessarily plan, but when we get there, we know it’s right. Now that I’m here developing the RBC, it makes all the other things in my life make sense. ALIVE: What’s the key to staying ahead in the professional world? KO: Being able to get things done. Too often, we plan to plan and forget to act. I have a bias toward action, and there’s absolutely no doubt that the RBC does. It’s important to be flexible and to look beyond today and see what’s ahead. You’re more likely to be successful and less likely to be mired in the present or past. alivemag.com

You may be overdoing it. Wearing your denim jacket with your trusty True Religions? Unless you want your friends to call you “Jean,” you should probably reconsider. Stay Centered This Season Six surefire ways to stay stress-free during the holidays.

With crowded malls, house-crashing in-laws and rowdy kids running amok, seasonal stress might seem unavoidable. If this time of year makes you growl more than it makes you gleeful, ditch the Scrooge routine and relieve holiday headaches with these six stress-busting tips that work wonders year round.

By Natalie Kurz | Photos by Josh Monken

Breathe deep at Ullola yoga studio in the Central West End.

1. stretch yourself

There’s a reason people are told to take deep breaths while in the midst of a panic attack—it has a direct calming effect on the nervous system and relaxes the muscles of the artery walls. Yoga is an amazing way to master the art of breathing, while also relieving muscle tension by strengthening and realigning the body for better posture. Newbies can try Yoga Basics at CWE’s Ullola yoga studio—specializing in holistic, well-rounded yoga practices — while more advanced practitioners can try their hand at Power Yoga (14 N. Sarah St., Central West End, 314.534.1878, ullolayoga.com). 2. Jot Your Thoughts Similar to therapy, journaling can alleviate stress and anxiety by helping to clarify conflicting emotions or traumatic events. By engaging both hemispheres of the brain, the very act of writing down troubling thoughts can help shed new light on them. To keep your thoughts safe in style, try Keys to Life’s Lessons, Taupe Blank Journal by local artist Stephen Lot (etsy.com) 3. schedule tea time For over 4,700 years, people have been drinking tea to enhance their health. Not only do tea leaves possess amazing anti-oxidants that boost immune function and stave off disease, but amino L-theanine (found almost exclusively in tea plants) has been shown to increase brain-wave

56 ALIVE STL DECEMber 2009

activity and enhance alertness, which can be crucial for combating holiday burnout. Bag yourself a selection of tea at Local Harvest (314.865.5260, Tower Grove, localharvestgrocery.com). 4. De-stress Your Space Whether used in conjunction with meditation or alone, aromatherapy candles are one of the simplest ways to calm the nerves. Certain scents have been shown to alter brain waves, increase contentment and promote sleep. The locally made vegetable and soy candles at K Hall Designs (314.961.1990, Brentwood, khalldesigns.com) deliver 60-100 hours of a fragrant, clean burn powerful enough to radiate through an entire room. Try scents like sandalwood, lavender and jasmine for super-soothing benefits.

5. heat things up When it comes to easing tense muscles, nothing does the trick more than heat and massage— combine the two together for a seriously stress-relieving experience. Try the Warm Stone Massage at the Four Seasons Hotel (314.881.5800, fourseasons.com/stlouis) for 90 minutes of uninterrupted anti-anxiety ecstasy. The warmth of the heated stones penetrates muscles to ease pain and increase blood flow while gentle or firm massage pressure helps loosen stubborn knots in the back and neck. 6. wear a reminder One of the first things we forget to do when we get busy and distracted is to take a minute to just relax. Enter meditation beads. Typically worn on a bracelet or necklace, the small beads act as a constant reminder to stop, take a second and breathe. With each deep breath, move a bead to the other side of the string and keep going until all the beads have been moved. Find some at MacroSun and get your “ohm” on (314.421.6400, Downtown, macrosun.com).

Winter Wonder This happy couple hosted a warm and intimate affair despite a chilly wedding date. By Kristin Stefek Brashares | Photos by Signature Studio

The C ouple

Laurie Strath man, 2 Attorn 7, ey at B rinker Doyen & , L.L.P, Brand and on Loe schne IT Inte r, 29, rnal Au dit Ma nager at Rub inBrow n

> Laurie Strathman realized she had landed herself a good man on her first date with Brandon Loeschner. She had been feeling under the weather that day, so he came over to her place with movies and sat by her side. The sweet gesture led to more time together and eventually another romantic move: a surprise proposal during a two-week Florida trip. They had traveled to Orlando to attend his family’s reunion. Knowing Laurie would want to share the news of their engagement in person with her parents soon after, Brandon secretly invited them. He took Laurie out to dinner one night, where her mom and dad joined them. Stunned, Laurie got up to ask them why they were there and then turned around to Brandon on one knee. THE BIG DAY: A posh party destination, HOME nightclub (homenightclubstl.com) in Ameristar Casino Resort Spa, struck a perfect balance of formal and fun for the ceremony and reception, all captured by Signature Studio (signaturestudio.com). Soft lighting, auburn-hued walls and two lit fireplaces at the altar warmed up the February 28, 2009 nuptials. Lined up in rows, love seats and oversized chairs in the lounge area served as cushier versions of pews and made for an extra cozy and intimate experience for the 150 guests. Later guests danced all night to music by Chris Johnson and CJ’s DJs.

58 ALIVE STL DECEMber 2009

THE FARE: Catered by Ameristar (ameristar. com), the sit-down dinner featured filet mignon, grilled shrimp and a chocolate-covered strawberry at each place setting. An ultra-creative three-tiered custom cheesecake from Russo’s substituted for wedding cake. The impressive presentation featured different-sized layers glazed with raspberry sauce and suspended on a modern silver-looped platter. THE DRESS: Laurie looked elegant and sophisticated in a strapless, form-fitting Paloma Blanca gown from The Ultimate Bride (theultimatebride.com, 314.961.9997). A lace-trimmed veil beautifully accented the all-lace bodice, and a simple satin bow tied just below it added an extra element. Bridesmaids donned different-style lace-topped black Jim Hjelm dresses. Burgundy clutch bouquets added a pop of color. THE FLOWERS: Alex Waldbart Florist (alex-

waldbartflorist.com, 314.644.3566) replicated Laurie’s bouquet from a picture she’d seen in a magazine and draped her grandmother’s necklace in memorandum. Four centerpiece designs struck a modern tone with alternating arrange-

ments of bamboo, twigs, burgundy florals, beach pebbles, white candles and black boxes.

THE JEWELRY: From engagement rings to day-of gifts, this affair showed no shortage of bling. With the help of the couple’s personal jeweler, David Kodner (314.725.3233, davidkodner.com), Laurie designed Brandon’s decorative-etched, blackdiamond-dotted band, and he selected a Martin Flyer-style ring with a round-cut diamond for Laurie. Brandon bought Laurie the diamond-studded dangler earrings Kodner let her borrow for the wedding, and she gave him black stingray-skin cufflinks.

Motivated volunteers rally behind the Metro St. Louis/Greater Missouri Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to help the organization raise funds to treat, cure and ultimately prevent diabetes. By Sheniqua Faulkner

> Juvenile diabetes, also known as type 1 or insulin-dependent diabetes, is the most severe form of the disease; each year, 15,000 U.S. children and adolescents are diagnosed—that’s 40 new diagnoses every day. In those with type 1 diabetes, the pancreas ceases to function effectively. Needed to convert blood sugar into energy, the pancreas is a vital organ; when it does not work, the patient requires a lifetime of multiple injections of insulin daily or a continuous infusion of insulin though a pump. Insulin is not a cure, nor does it prevent the inevitable long-term health complications of the disease: kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, nerve damage, stroke and amputation. Half of all new cases are diagnosed in people over the age of 18. THE CAUSE: The disease is being carefully studied, however researchers and

clinicians are unsure of the cause. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is working to change that with the help of dedicated volunteers and staff who help raise funds to support research and research-related education toward a cure.

LOCAL IMPACT: Lauded as

one of the most successful interest groups supporting a disease in terms of lobbying and fundraising, JDRF has awarded more than $1.3 billion to diabetes research since its founding in 1970 by a group of parents of children with diabetes. Last year alone, the organization raised over $150 million. The Metro St. Louis/Greater Missouri chapter of JDRF has much to do with these impressive numbers. Marie Davis, executive director of the Metro St. Louis Chapter of JDRF, emphasizes that because diabetes research is so dependent on adequate funding, her staff and volunteers focus on creating fun and functional outreach events that get St. Louisans excited about getting involved—think resume-writing workshops and happy hour events geared toward young professionals.

JDRF’s award-winning social networking site, Juvenation, provides members with a web-based community created for those with type 1 diabetes, their families and advocates across the nation to connect, discuss and support one another.

Alive’s 2009 Company Retreat planning was made FUN and CONVENIENt AT the loop’s OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD BOUTIQUE HOTEL. Apollo 8 meeting room

I

n the short time since the Moonrise Hotel opened its doors on the Delmar Loop, the quirky boutique hotel has already been recognized by locals and visitors as one of the best choices for both leisure and business travel. It’s no surprise that satisfied guests are speaking out, as the Moonrise has since become the top-rated St. Louis area hotel on TripAdvisor.com. This year, ALIVE was pleased to hold its annual company retreat at the Moonrise, taking advantage of both the hotel’s well-appointed business facilities as well as the lavishly luxurious accommodations. From the moment ALIVE’s team stepped inside the Moonrise, the hotel’s unique charm was obvious. The most noticeable feature is the spectacularly illuminated main staircase. The eye-catching staircase has been nominated for this year’s Hotel Design “Design of the Year” award. The rest of the hotel’s décor is just as impressive, featuring a space-age theme with moon artwork, vintage toys and memorabilia from the Apollo missions. The Moonrise offers plenty of meeting space for your corporate event, meeting or get-together. The executive conference rooms, which can be arranged-to-order based on any particular meeting’s needs, are aptly named after the Apollo 8 and Apollo 11 moon missions. The state-of-the-art meeting rooms are equipped with amenities such as high speed wireless internet, high-definition audio-visual projectors and delicious

refreshments. Moonrise’s friendly and attentive staff are always willing to take the extra step to make meetings especially productive—something the ALIVE staff greatly appreciated while making plans and setting goals for 2010. After sunset, ALIVE staffers packed up their laptops and headed upstairs to Moonrise’s airy rooftop terrace. With its panoramic view of Downtown St. Louis, punctuated by the Gateway Arch, the starlit rooftop bar was an idyllic spot to enjoy a cocktail and appetizer after a hard day’s work. As night fell, the team retired to their guest rooms, each featuring luxurious furnishings like flatscreen TVs, iPod docks and “Enrapture” eurotop beds. Bathrooms likewise featured indulgent details, including spa-worthy waterfall shower heads and H2O+ bath products. The Moonrise offers guests a taste of St. Louis without ever having to step into a car. As the Moonrise’s tagline says—a claim to which the ALIVE team can now fully attest—the difference at this charming boutique hotel is night and day. few minutes with Bollywood actress Pooja Kumar is all it takes to decide she’s the perfect combination of brains and beauty. And let’s not forget class, personality and passion—the additional three traits that are immediately recognizable in this St. Louis-born Indian-American entertainer, who before her big break into the Hollywood/Bollywood scene was a political science and finance major at St. Louis’ own Washington University.

ington University end up in Hollywood/ Bollywood? Pooja Kumar: (Laughs). I’d have to say karma and destiny. I grew up in St. Louis doing a lot of classical Indian dance. I was performing at an Indian-American function in Chicago, and they asked me to represent young Indian-American women in a beauty pageant, and I thought, “Are they crazy?” I’d never competed in a pageant, but decided to give it a try. I ended up winning the Miss India Tribune and went onto the national competition, Miss India USA—never thinking I had a chance of getting anywhere—and ended up winning that as well. Then things just started happening from there. It’s amazing what destiny can do and the things it can bring to your life if you just keep your eyes open.

ALIVE: What projects are you working on right now? PK: Right now, my focus is on promoting two films (Drawing with Chalk and Bollywood Beats, which was recently featured at the St. Louis International Film Festival). I’m one of those actors that very much believes in the projects I do, so I try to help the filmmaker as much as I can as far as getting it out there and meeting with distributors and getting it into film festivals. I’m very hands-on in that sense.

“ It’s sort of surreal. Growing up, you don’t think something like this is ever going to happen to you.”

ALIVE: What was it like growing up with two dominant cultures? PK: Looking back, I think, “Gosh, I’m really lucky because I know two different worlds.” I’m blessed that I had parents that wanted their kids to be American and know this way of life while also blending in our Indian culture. They introduced India in a fun and interesting way and didn’t force it on us and just let us experience it. They took us to India every summer, so that’s where I learned ALIVE: Speaking of hands-on, you’re all the beautiful things about my herit- also a producer. When did you get into age. that role? PK: You know, I never really thought ALIVE: How do you think that experience about [producing] until I had been acthas shaped you as a person and an actress? ing for a couple of years. I just couldn’t PK: As an actress, I feel like it has given pass up the first short film I produced me many more perspectives, emotions (1001 Auditions) about a struggling and characters that I can tap into. All of New York actress who realizes her true this has helped me to be open and have karma. I just loved the concept because knowledge of what’s going on in the I could identify a lot with the character, world and how different cultures react who was going through the day-to-day to different things. Personally, it has life of an actress living in New York, tryALIVE: So, how does a girl who majored given me a broader point of view that ing to make rent, going to auditions and getting rejected and going out there in political science and finance at Wash- I’m extremely grateful for. Quickly proving that academics were far from her only forte, Kumar claimed the Miss India USA crown in 1995 and then burst into the TV and film industry, starting as a video disc jockey for Asian music network Channel [V] and quickly moving into TV and feature film appearances for both Hollywood (She played the Assistant District Attorney on “Law & Order” and received the Screen Actors Guild Emerging Actor Award for her role in “Flavors”) and Bollywood, where she recently starred in the first-ever Hollywood-Bollywood TV collaboration (“Bollywood Hero”) with SNL comedian Chris Kattan and guest actor Keanu Reeves. Now, with more than 10 feature films under her belt, numerous TV shows, major ad campaigns (for “Bombay Dreams,” Pepsi, Verizon and others) and a recent shift into producing, Kumar is living proof that Hollywood—and Bollywood—dreams really do come true.

again. Producing is tough, and it’s not for everyone. But as an actor, I feel I should be producing and creating because each of us has an individual voice, and if we’re willing to share it, we’ll have much more interesting content and be more satisfied within our own careers. ALIVE: Sounds like you stay pretty busy. PK: Normally, I have at least two or three meetings a day in regards to projects I’m working on. Today I had a meeting with my team on another feature film that I’m producing, starring and acting in. It’s an untitled romantic comedy that’s in preproduction right now, and I’m really excited about it. Whether I’m reading a script, going to an audition or meeting with a director, I’m always working. Basically, I live the typical life of a New Yorker, which is having no time and always keeping busy. ALIVE: How you do unwind? PK: I do yoga at least four times a week and drink a glass of milk every morning. It’s just so detoxifying and clears your mind and refreshes your whole body. Shopping is another outlet. My apartment is in New York’s Flatiron District, right off of Fifth Avenue, which is great most of the time, but it can be a difficult task to walk down Fifth Avenue and not go into a shop. ALIVE: What is it like to suddenly see yourself on billboards and in major magazines? PK: It’s sort of surreal. Growing up, you don’t think something like this is ever going to happen to you, and then people are calling you the Indian Sarah Jessica Parker. I love that label, by the way. But most of all, I love when people appreciate the work. All of the other things are just an added bonus.

Go Exotic Mango’s Peruvian cuisine turns up the flavor on the Downtown dining scene. By Cristy Miller | Photos by Liz Reiff Sloan

The Pescado alo macho served with white rice and golden potato

> Expanding can be a daunting undertaking for any business owner. Expanding during a recession is even riskier. Add the fact that this particular restaurant serves Peruvian cuisine, which is more of a niche and strays from the comfort food most diners seek these days, and suddenly there’s a lot on the line. Luckily, Mango owners Jorge and Nori Calvo and Paul and Sherry Sawchak aren’t easily dissuaded—after five successful years in Shrewsbury, they decided it was time to open a second location of their established spot. So this September, Downtown welcomed its first Peruvian restaurant. AN URBAN SPACE The space, which was previously inhabited by Mosaic, is contemporary with sandalwood overtones, and is a far cry from the forced festive décor that many Latin restaurants often employ. Faux-burning candle lights hang parallel above the dining room’s center bar and create a serene feel in the open, loft-like restaurant. Paintings and artwork occupy several of the walls and owners plan to rotate collections by local and regional artists. DIVERSE DISHES Peruvian cuisine is a melting pot of influences—and while known most notably for ceviche (Mango serves a well-prepared version with mussels and shrimp), its 104 ALIVE STL DECEMBER 2009

repertoire includes a variety of hearty, healthy and flavorful dishes. Mango’s menu features plenty of options—both vegetarian-friendly items, like rice and fresh vegetables and spaghetti noodles tossed in pesto spinach sauce, and heftier meat dishes like grilled beef loin and a savory empanada filled with Spanish olives, beef and raisins. A big hit is the sweet yuca frita appetizer—the starchy root is fried and served with huancaina, a slightly spicy sauce that combines white cheese with aji amarillo, the Peruvian yellow pepper. Or the chicken or beef kabobs marinated with the yellow pepper sauce and served with corn. The ensalada de palta channels the spirit of Latin cuisine, with a colorful blend of fresh avocado, chopped vineripened tomatoes and queso fresco, mixed with oregano, citrus and olive oil. I also enjoyed several bites of one of my fellow diners’ seco de carne; flank steak strips, infused with cilantro and simmered with onions and hot pepper—the meat was tender and well seasoned. Spaghetti noodles make many appearances throughout the menu, most combined with pesto and creamy spinach sauce and served in a generous bowl with grilled steak or chicken. Some of my favorite dishes at Mango were also the simplest— the pollo a la parilla, two perfectly delicate chicken breasts marinated in white wine and served with slices of oregano-touched tomatoes and potato halves, and the saltado de langostinos, succulent shrimp sautéed with red and green onions in white wine and cilantro and served with rice.

Soulard Hotspot Expands Molly’s merges a hip hangout with an elegant eatery. By Amy De La Hunt | Photo by Liz Reiff Sloan

Diners enjoy a late-night meal at Molly’s.

Bar-hopping in Soulard is pleasantly predictable, in a jeans-and-bottledbeer sort of way. Those of us who live in the neighborhood are almost guaranteed to run into someone we know—it’s like “Cheers” multiplied by 20. When Luke Reynolds and Sam Berger bought Molly’s six years ago, they bought into the Soulard bar scene wholeheartedly. The only thing that could have made Molly’s better, in their eyes, was a kitchen. MORE TO LOVE When Norton’s Café next door closed earlier this year, Reynolds and Berger saw their opportunity to expand. They just had to figure out what to do with it. “We didn’t want to destroy the feel of Molly’s—mainly because we like it,” Reynolds said. “It’s tough to wear more than one hat.” But they knew what they didn’t want: the same bar food already available in a couple dozen other Soulard watering holes. As if he sensed their dilemma, Eric Brenner of Moxy—who’s built up a considerable side business as a consulting chef— called them up. Ideas flowed. “The space reflected the traditional Soulard architecture at the turn of the century,” Reynolds said. “The menu we developed from there, with Eric.” Starting from a classic French bistro feel, they’ve added winter items like cassoulet and are considering southern French and northern African influenced-dishes—and wait a second, are we still in Soulard? Can I still wear a baseball cap? Yes, because even though Molly’s has a nice French wine list now, plus single-malt Scotches and higher-end 106 ALIVE STL DECEMBER 2009

brandies and cognacs, its bartenders are not too gentrified to serve candy-flavored shots or bottles of Bud Light. Which beverage category you choose depends whether you’re west of the patio (Molly’s bar) or east (Molly’s restaurant). The fabulously huge patio is a melting pot of both. The décor, too, flows from exposed brick and flat-screen TVs in the bar to exposed brick and upholstered banquettes in the dining room. Berger credits their new partner, local fashion photographer and director Rick Gould, for “using his artistic flair” on the interior design—and for coming up with the iconic black-and-white image of “Molly.” The best thing about the new Molly’s, from a neighborhood point of view, is that the nightlife is spread out over more hours. “Without food, 75 percent of our business was after 10 o’clock at night,” Reynolds said. Now there’s a whole menu full of reasons to head to Molly’s all evening long (816 Geyer Ave., Soulard, 314.241.6200).

he intimate ambiance of Soulard’s Restaurant proved to be the perfect setting to host ALIVE’s Power Players dinner, presented by Peoples National Bank. The laid-back vibe of this fete, the fifth in a series of decadent dining, was a cozy complement to the special menu of refined comfort food that Soulard’s created for the occasion. “I wanted to feature some of our signature dishes we offer at Soulard’s,” says owner Dan Badock. “We have been in business for 32 years, but a lot of people have not experienced what we do.” The longstanding and beloved St. Louis restaurant warmly welcomed guests with their choice of two wines specially selected to pair with the evening’s fare. “I chose elegant wines that would complement our food,” says Badock, a certified sommelier. A vibrant red wine, Napa Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, and two whites, Folie a Deux Chardonnay and Trinchero Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc from the revered Trinchero Family Estates Winery—2009 Wine Enthusiast American Winery of the Year—fit Badock’s parameters and were poured throughout the evening.

In the fifth Power Players Dinner, ALIVE’s signature by-invitation-only dining event, some of STL’s most respected business VIPs were selected to indulge in an evening of delicious food, fine wine and networking at Soulard’s Restaurant. PHOTOS BY JOSH MONKEN

As guests mingled during the 6pm cocktail hour, servers presented a trio of palette-pleasing appetizers from Chef Russel Byers including Soulard’s bruschetta, a bite-sized grouper cake and Ahi tuna served in a vodka vinaigrette. After sampling and sipping, guests were seated at the elegantly appointed linen-topped tables for dinner. Soulard’s famous house salad, the first course of the four-course dinner, was a light and refreshing foray into the comfort food classics to come. For the second course, Soulard’s chefs presented succulent BBQ shrimp served with flash-fried spinach. The main course, a perfectly seared petite filet, was served over savory garlic mashed potatoes, fresh asparagus tips and tender red bell pepper. For dessert, guests indulged in a not-too-sweet Amish cheese pie—a decadent home style take on your standard cheesecake—topped with whipped cream and fresh raspberries and drizzled with a tangy-sweet raspberry sauce. ELIZABETH’S NEW VISION With the advent of technologies such as LASIK surgery, it is no surprise that people are saying goodbye to their prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses. Tired of the hassle and expense of contact lenses and the need to constantly remember her eyeglasses, ALIVE’s Elizabeth Tucker received her LASIK treatment from Crown Laser Center, one of the top 25 LASIK surgery practices in the USA and part of St. Louisbased Crown Vision Center. LASIK is a visioncorrection surgery that can reduce or eliminate common vision conditions. But, as with any surgery, Elizabeth had fears and concerns when deciding to go through with the decision that changed her life. Here, Elizabeth shares her personal LASIK journey to clear vision.

contacts since the fifth grade, so it was going to be a big change. The caring team at Crown Laser Center answered my remaining questions and helped me decide which procedure was right for my needs. Dr. Chris Ullrich, Crown’s chief LASIK surgeon, did a fantastic job on the day of my surgery, calming my fears and guiding me through the procedure.

THE DECISION While making the decision whether to have LASIK, I had the same fears anyone would have before receiving eye surgery. I was worried about the possibility of my eyes getting worse and how long the recovery time would be. “Will it work?” I asked myself.

However, after speaking to the doctor, I felt very calm about the procedure. He was soothing while giving me the facts. He said the procedure would save me money in the long run and that there are just as many risks with contacts as with the eye surgery. He let me know that there was hardly any recovery time needed. Most people who get LASIK walk out of the doctor’s office with nearly perfect vision! That aspect alone was very appealing to me.

The team at Crown Laser Center addressed many of my concerns. While doing my research, I discovered that Crown Laser Center’s helpful website (CrownVisionCenter.com) had frequently asked questions, qualifications and testimonials that helped ease my mind. I had been wearing

THE PROCESS When I first went to Crown Laser, I didn’t think LASIK would be something for me. I thought I was too busy to have the procedure and that I didn’t have enough time for recovery. I was afraid of the risks and I thought it was too expensive.

I decided to move forward with the surgery, because after hearing all the facts, I knew that it was a good decision for me. Although I was

nervous, I was excited with anticipation. The staff at Crown Laser was kind, sincere and knowledgeable and made the whole process easier. The procedure took less than 10 minutes. I couldn’t believe how fast it went! THE AMAZING RESULTS After a short recovery time, I’m back to my normal, busy self. Only now, I can see clearer than ever before! I am excited to save money by skipping contact lenses and glad to no longer have to fumble with eyeglasses. As a busy professional, LASIK is life changing! I can wake up in the morning and see the alarm clock clearly, ride my bike safely and see my computer screen much better. I just opened my eyes underwater for the first time since the fifth grade. It was so satisfying and life altering to be able to throw my contacts and solution away, and I love the convenience and comfort of having perfect vision. I urge people who are considering LASIK to visit the ALIVE website to see my personal LASIK story on video at alivemag.com/ elizabethlasik. LASIK eye surgery is a fast, effective procedure that can make a positive impact on your quality of life, as it did for me. Contact Alysia at 314.368.5354 for your FREE LASIK consultation from Crown Laser Center and begin your own journey of clear, crisp hassle-free vision!
