ust when I think I’ve seen everything St. Louis has to offer, we get struck with what seems to be a wave of new obsessions. This spring/ summer it came in the form of new eateries: Mad Tomato, Bocci Bar, PW Pizza, Half & Half and Salt, to name a few. I’ve got every weekend night lined up with somewhere new to try, and I can’t wait. St. Louis always seems to have a way of surprising even this native.

I was recently reminded yet again of how great St. Louis is when ALIVE Senior Account Executive Brigid Pritchard and I enjoyed lunch with the GM of the Four Seasons, Alper Oztok. What a great reminder that our city is full of fascinating people, amazing food (and drinks) and spectacular landscapes. Every time I walk onto the pool deck at the Four Seasons, it gives me a fresh and exciting perspective on Downtown. There is even a bit of beauty in the barges floating by when you’re pool-side eight stories up. The next time you’re there, don’t forget to try the newly invented poptails. Yes, these cocktail-inspired popsicles are simply genius. One of my favorite events to work on is our LAUNCH series for aspiring entrepreneurs. On July 14, Washington University’s University College has lined up a stellar panel to enlighten us on the international resources we have right here in St. Louis. Talk about inspiring—these panelists, all with different backgrounds and experience, could each teach their own lecture series on the subject (and some do!). Flip to p.31 to learn more and meet our panelists. Working on our July Health & Beauty Issue gave me a few other reasons to get excited. Our Fitness Success Stories special section introduced me to two amazing trainers in St. Louis, each offering a fresh take on getting fit. Check out their stories starting on p.46. Personally, I’ve been on a fitness journey of my own this year with the training I’m doing for the 2011 Florida Ironman. This journey is taking me all over the metro area from a very different vantage point—the seat of a bike. I’ve formed a new appreciation for the beauty of Madison County, the severity of West County hills and the serenity of Clayton Road at 6am...well, almost.

don’t know many people— myself included—who haven’t hit a rut or two (or three) when it comes to their fitness routines. Whether it’s the St. Louis humidity bringing your once diligent runs to a screeching halt or the complete and utter boredom I find inevitably ensues after too many rounds on the elliptical, there’s always a reason to swap your tired workout routine for something with a little more “oomph.”

Having spent way too much time on said elliptical as of late, I have to admit—I was more than ready to uncover the latest and greatest workouts to hit the St. Louis scene (and spare myself from another blip of elliptical madness) for our Health & Beauty Issue. From hula hoop classes and aerial arts to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and high oxygen training, what we found (p.66) was anything but ordinary—and it sure beats spinning my wheels on the elliptical!

Girl-about-town Pamela Raymond uncovers the truths behind sex and relationships.

The new workout trends we discovered spanned further than our local gyms. A lot of city dwellers are realizing the benefits of two-wheeled transportation for fitness and utility with the help of the new Downtown Bicycle Station (check out our guide to its amenities on p.28). The heat certainly isn’t keeping the STL biking community off the streets either. They’re biking to compete (at the Urban Assault Ride), to deliver food (via South Grand Delivered) and even to get cocktails (on Trailnet’s Heels on Wheels rides)— providing even more proof that the St. Louis fitness scene packs some serious punch.

parentpop

If you’re in need of more convincing, look no further than the local fitness accessories shops—like Little Shark Athletic Co. and Blue Moon Activewear—now offering tons of performance-enhancing gear in bright and trendy neon shades (p.44). Hey, no one ever said you couldn’t look good while working out. But fitness is only one piece of the puzzle. Skincare is another major factor, especially this time of year. So we turned to the skincare experts for our “Saving Face” feature (p.88) to give us the good, the bad, the ugly—and the answers—to the skincare challenges we all encounter, whether we’re in our 20s, 30s, 40s or beyond.

Lisa Bertrand on parenting in the age of products and pop culture.

thechicgeek 963c bringing you your requisite amount of hi-tech health.

If it’s happening in STL,

I highly doubt our cover girl, actress-slash-pop-star Kate Voegele, is worrying about “saving face” amidst her current “Less Is More Tour” with Natasha Bedingfield, which stops in St. Louis on July 9. It was good to see the Ohio native hasn’t forgotten her Midwest roots. In fact, she spent a good portion of the interview (p.64) singing its praises. The cultural reference “Cleveland rocks” even made its way into the dialogue—but I’m sure Kate would forgive me for saying that another Midwest city, in my opinion, “rocks” a little bit more.

carmen troesser

sarah quatrano

St. Louis photographer Carmen Troesser looks forward to her time in the ALIVE studio shooting the latest fashion trends. The monthly shoots are a nice change for Troesser, who also photographs a lot of food. “A pair of boots don’t melt or wilt after five minutes,” Carmen says with a smile. View more of her work at carmentroesser.com.

Sarah Quatrano has been living in St. Louis for the past five years and has loved every minute of it. However, new opportunities recently brought her back east, and she will soon be living in New York City. But this hasn’t stopped her from contributing illustrations to ALIVE every now and then (see her latest on p.32). Visit quatrano.com/sarah to see more.

Kylah Brown

jennifer wells

After five years in Indonesia working as a magazine and newspaper editor, Kylah Brown returned to St. Louis to pursue new adventures. When she’s not writing or blogging for local publications, she’s baking for Torta Bella, a business she coowns with her friend, Sharon Harter. She balances the sampling calories she encounters with yoga practice as a certified teacher—so it certainly was no stretch for her to take on ALIVE’s fitness feature, “The New Workout Plan” (p.66), for the Health & Beauty Issue.

Shopping is already a major pastime for Jennifer Wells, so scouring the area’s trendiest destinations in search of top picks for ALIVE’s Haute Hostess (p.48) and High Impact (p.44) articles was second nature. Resisting the urge to purchase said items proved to be much more of a challenge. In addition to working as a fashion blogger for Corridor40, Jennifer recently launched stylishsuburban. com, a shopping and lifestyle website for Southern Illinois.

7 Things you must do this month

2

Witness a Legend

Visit phd Gallery through Aug. 6 to see a collection of original graphite drawings by art icon Tom of Finland—the first exhibit of its kind to be featured in St. Louis. Also known as “Touko Laaksonen,” the well known artist made a memorable impact on the art world during the ’60s and ’70s. His figures embody an idealized hyper-masculinity that has empowered gay men for decades to embrace their sexuality unapologetically. For more info, visit phdstl.com/tom_of_finland.html.

3

Work it Out

Get fit with some of the best instructors in St. Louis during the ALIVE Summer Shape-Up event, presented by Famous Footwear, on July 23. Women of all ages and skill levels are welcome, as long as they’re ready to sweat. The event, hosted by the St. Louis Aces at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park, will keep you on your feet with the latest workouts from The Lab Gym, Sweat, Body-Botics and Denay’s Fitness. Cool down with a fitness fashion show featuring lululemon athletica and Famous Footwear, and snack on healthful treats, courtesy of Monster. Purchase tickets at alivemag.com.

1

4 Have a Beautiful Day

Don your Bono shades and head to Busch Stadium to see U2 when the legendary band stops by St. Louis on July 17 as part of its spectacular 360° Tour. Hailed “the largest tour production in history,” the show’s stage will cover the entire field at Busch—so don’t miss this “One” because it’s happening “With Or Without You.”

Purchase tickets at cardinals.com/U2.

Think Big

Join Washington University and ALIVE Magazine on July 14 for LAUNCH, a panel discussion on “Living Locally, Thinking Globally.” Learn about international business opportunities and the resources available to St. Louis entrepreneurs to help them expand globally. Hosted at the Regional Arts Commission, the forum will feature panelists from the Missouri Partnership, World Trade Organization and Kaldi’s Coffeehouse, among others. Arrive early to network with other local professionals while sipping cold Bud Select and Select 55 brews. For more info and to purchase tickets, visit alivemag.com.

Each night closes with a dazzling display of fireworks that’s sure to have you bursting with American pride. For more info, visit celebratestlouis.org.

Roam the streets of Maplewood and enjoy art, live music and wine at the “Let Them Eat Art” festival on July 8—the city’s tribute to Bastille Day, a holiday celebrating the end of the French Revolution. Warm up your palate with some sips at Saint Louis Cellars before the festival, and spend the rest of the evening flitting from local shop to restaurant to galleryfor live art demonstrations, performances and a costume contest—not to mention a film screening, public art unveiling and photography show opening. Ride it Out The Downtown Bicycle Station kicks into high gear. By Matt Sorrell | Photos by max campbell

> If you’ve been thinking about joining the rising number of St. Louisans converting to a two-wheel commute, the Downtown Bicycle Station might be just what you’ve been waiting for. The station, a project of The City of St. Louis, with help from Trailnet, Partnership for Downtown St. Louis and Big Shark Bicycle Co., opened in late spring and offers cyclists a place to secure their bikes, stash their stuff, get a shower and repair their rides. A $20 application fee and $20 a month (or $150 a year) gives you full access to the station and its amenities. So, throw on your helmet and check it out—because two wheels are the new four. 1. Central and secure The sta-

tion is located in the center of Downtown at 1011 Locust St., so no matter what your destination, chances are it’s a short walk away. It’s also two blocks from the 8th and Pine MetroLink station and bus routes if you don’t feel like hitting the bricks after dismounting. Members can access the facilities by scanning a small plastic key to unlock the entrance, which is well lit and monitored by cameras.

1

2. Bike Racks The 120 bike racks

inside the station are available to members on a first-come, first-served basis, so there’s always a secure, weather-protected place to park. 3. Locker Rooms One of the biggest hurdles of pedaling to work is finding a place to freshen up and stow your gear, but the new bike station has it covered with clean lockers and shower facilities available from 4am to midnight. 4. Support Services Adjacent to the station is Urban Shark (shown here), a spot for members to get 10 percent off repairs and retail items and 5 percent off bikes—plus, access to a mechanic. The shop offers lock rentals, towel and laundry services, bike valet and storage. It’s sort of like having your own pit crew at the ready.

Above the station, you’ll find Trailnet’s new office, where you can connect with fellow bikers and join its latest community, shiftyourcommute.com. It’s also the launch pad for sporadic Heels on Wheels rides, where city commuters join for a spin around town before landing at a local happy hour. 28 ALIVE STL JULY 2011

Job Envy Jeff Jarrett has made a career out of professional partying (and rubbing elbows with celebs), but that’s not to say his coveted role doesn’t come with an equal dose of hard work. The sweat he pours into each event is a fair trade-off for the unbelievable stories he’s gained along the way—one of the things he’s most looking forward to at his all-time favorite gig: LouFest this August. interview by jennifer dulin wiley | Photo by attilio D’agostino Jeff Jarrett, 30 Project Manager / Producer at Contemporary Events and Talent Buyer for LouFest Music Festival Breaking into the Biz I’ve always loved music. I worked for a record company in college, and three hours after my last final, I was managing a load-in at NBC for Conan. Then, I was on the road touring with Jesse Harris, and subsequently, the Trampoline Records tour. When the job at Contemporary opened in 2004, the idea of having somewhat of a daily routine was a welcome change. I’ve been there ever since. Education I have majors in business and communications and a minor in English from Saint Louis University. Best Work Day Ever Announcing the LouFest lineup each year. I’m fortunate to have the job of recommending, negotiating and securing the bands, many of whom I have relationships with—and I love the feedback and attention that comes with dictating what bands people will see. I’m all about any event that gives people a reason to have fun. Why His Job Rocks My work centers around activities that people covet in their free time. I’ve experienced a lot of outrageous moments (hanging out with Gilbert Gottfried comes to mind) and talked with great people (Johnny Marr, Anthony Bourdain, President Obama). Sitting in an office or wearing a uniform has never appealed to me. I’d rather be on the side of a stage watching a band behind a pair of Ray-Bans. Typical Day A typical day doesn’t exist; it’s hard work. A producer is the first to show up and the last to leave. One day I could be producing a fundraising gala for a nonprofit, and the next could be spent setting up tents and lounge furniture for a birthday party. You

definitely a moment. Sonic Youth appearing at Live on the Levee was also amazing. But, earning the respect and friendship of those I admire in the industry is most rewarding.

Best Job Perk It has to be all the outrageous things I’ve witnessed behind the scenes. The stories I could tell would make you mental.

Goals for the Future We’d like to expand the scope and size of our events. Who in this business wouldn’t want to produce the PostOscar Party for “Vanity Fair”? Introducing new concepts and designs to this market and moving into new markets is the ultimate goal. I’m also really looking forward to the future of LouFest. It has unlimited potential.

Proudest Moment LouFest, for sure, because I’ve always wanted to program a major festival. The Cards Opening Day Ceremony at the new Busch Stadium was

Back to the Garden ALIVE’s green blogger weighs in on the growing trend. By Jeff McIntire-Strasburg | illustration by sarah quatrano

> Own a recycling bin you put on the curbside every week? Replaced incandescent bulbs with CFLs? Take your reusable bags to the store? Congratulations: You’ve officially “gone green,” according to common belief. Now you can sit back, turn the AC down a few degrees, and crank up the big screen. Okay, I’m being a bit sarcastic, and I do think CFLs, reusable bags and recycling bins have their place in terms of reducing environmental impact. I’m glad to see many people have embraced a few “green” practices. And, yes, I do all of these things. But when the initial self-congratulations subside (it’s okay to give yourself that pat on the back), do you really feel like you’ve changed your life for the better? Sure, you’ll probably see a small drop in your electric bill because of the light bulbs, but do you feel healthier, happier, more connected to the natural world? Probably not, and if we really want people to “go green,” we have to come up with activities and practices that do more than make people feel like they’ve “done their duty.” If you really want to “green up” your life in a manner that will make you feel more fulfilled, my advice (which is in no way original to me): start a garden. A garden? With digging and planting and weeding? Yeah, that sounds like work. But gardening doesn’t have to be back-breaking labor, and it can provide rewards that no CFL ever will—a bit of exercise, a sense of accomplishment, some down time and, of course, fresh, tasty produce that beats anything in the grocery store. It’s no wonder that gardening has seen such a huge resurgence in recent years. People not only want better food than what’s offered by largescale production and distribution, but they also want to be involved in an activity that feels meaningful. If the meaning you seek involves your own environmental impact, consider the resources you save with a garden. Many will point out that the tomato you buy in your grocery store travels about a thousand miles from farm to plate, but that’s only a part of the story. Growing, harvesting and storing those tomatoes takes energy and water. Those tomatoes are likely packaged for at least part of their lives (more resources). And, to top it off, up to 10 percent of a crop can be thrown away because it either doesn’t have the right appearance for store sales, or it doesn’t get purchased before it has outlived its shelf life. A “yard-to-table” tomato clearly eliminates much of this resource use, and greatly shrinks the rest (especially if you choose to garden organically). If you’re still concerned about the digging, planting and weeding, let me tell you: I’m not a master gardener (there is such a designation), but I’ve done it for a few years with some success—all while meeting my other obligations. Here are some ways to keep it manageable:

32 ALIVE STL JULY 2011

R Start small. You don’t have to grow a huge plot of food; you can even start with plants in pots. Pick the herbs and vegetables you really want to eat: tomatoes, basil, cucumbers, whatever, and start from there.

R Use a raised bed. If you want a bit more than what you can get from pots, build a raised bed (or buy one). Mine’s made from leftover bricks stacked on top of each other; it’s much easier than digging.

R Buy good seeds or plants. Nothing’s more disappointing than plants that don’t grow or produce, so check with more experienced gardeners about their sources. Sites like gardenweb.com can be tremendously useful, too.

R Spend a little time each day with your garden. And I do mean a little: watering, if needed, and weeding, which is much easier if you do it regularly, or just checking the plants; it’s kind of meditative.

R Don’t reinvent the wheel. If you really want to keep it easy, check out Mel Bartholomew’s book, “All New Square Foot Gardening,” which walks you through the entire process of creating a nearly pain-free garden. Is it worth it? When I served up a pan of eggplant parmigiana to my family, made with eggplant and basil right out of my garden, I couldn’t have imagined a greater reward. Working to save the planet is great; doing it in a manner that makes people, including myself, happy is not only priceless—it’s genuinely motivating. So take that, canvas shopping bags!

Vito Racanelli Jr. serves up another hit with the opening of Mad Tomato. By Cristy Miller | Photos by jennifer silverberg

> With Mad Tomato, Vito Racanelli Jr. adds another dimension to his repertoire of St. Louis restaurants. Yes, it’s Italian, but that’s where the similarity ends between the veteran chef’s successful Onesto Italian eatery in South City and his new Southern Italian destination in Clayton. You could classify Mad Tomato as a fancier version of the playful, family-friendly restaurant in South City with flavors and ingredients that reflect an authentic Southern Italian meal. The interior, while minimally adorned, is chic and eclectic with red metal chairs contrasted by lines of photographs along the walls and a sleek, 34 ALIVE STL JULY 2011

A Taste of Italy What I like most about the menu is the range of options; I can order adventurous with the trippa Napoletana (tripe with onions, olives, tomato and breadcrumbs) or stick to a classic comfort with roasted eggplant skins or a salumi platter. Pizzas are delectable, made with hand-tossed dough and baked crisp in the restaurant’s woodburning oven. The taste variations are incredible; combinations include the wonderful margherita with standard ingredients and a sweet and savory salsiccia with Italian sausage, peppers, onion and whole garlic cloves. Chef Vito gets much of the menu’s ingredients from local farms and buys seasonal, which is evident in the quality and taste (and also means menu items change frequently, so be sure to check madtomatostl.com for the latest updates). Fresh wild mushrooms play well with smoked mozzarella and arugula in the fungi pizza, and the bianca was a hearty and satisfying blend of roasted garlic, fresh ricotta, onion and oregano. Focaccia bread comes pre-meal with olive oil. (It’s definitely a challenge not to fill up on

the warm and airy serving.) The Hunter’s egg appetizer was quite possibly my favorite menu item; I loved the unexpected textural outcome of combining polenta with bits of pancetta and beans and a perfectly cooked egg in the center. Pasta options are fresh and vegetable-laden—like the fettuccine and braised rabbit with carrots and fava or a to-die-for egg yolk ravioloni with roasted asparagus, and pancetta, with pecorino cheese and black pepper. You’re in good hands with Chef Vito and his pasta—or any of his entrées, like the lamb meatballs with fingerling potatoes or chicken spiedini with creamy asparagus risotto and pea tendrils. The desserts add another element; think classic tiramisu with hazelnut bark and chocolate, cannoli served crispy with ricotta cream and candied orange, and an absolutely amazing pistachio tart with salted caramelized pistachios and chocolate.

Micro-Booze Raise a glass to craft spirits—and the local distilleries putting St. Louis on the map. By matt sorrell | Photos by ben rieder

Square One Brewery & Distillery

> Everyone knows St. Louis is a serious beer town—but beer isn’t the only thing brewing at local distilleries. A couple of popular brewsky spots are branching out and creating fine spirits along with their craft beers. Square One Brewery & Distillery in Lafayette Square and Amalgamated Brewing Company in Soulard both began distilling operations within weeks of each other just a few years back, and in that short time, both have received national recognition. Square One recently snagged a bronze medal in the American Whiskey category at the American Distilling Institute’s 2011 Craft Distillers Conference for its J.J. Neukomm Whiskey; meanwhile, its whiskey liqueur, Vermont Night, won gold and a “best of” category designation. Only blocks away, the dark version of Amalgamated’s flagship 85 Lashes Rum beat out 61 competing countries and took home a silver medal at the 2011 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. As Amalgamated’s head distiller

36 ALIVE STL JULY 2011

Jake Jones says, “We’re doing really well with what we’re doing.” Doing well indeed. For relatively small operations, these two distilleries put out quite a bit of product. Square One currently distills 13 different spirits in-house, not counting one-off specialty creations like their pineapple and jalapeño infused tequila. In addition to its rums, Amalgamated’s locally distilled offerings include grappa, gin, peach brandy and sambuca. Fans of the locally distilled trend can find these custom spirits on the shelves of select local liquor stores, and of course, in Square One’s eponymous brew pub or Amalgamated’s restaurant, The Stable (straight or in cocktail form). They’re even known to pop up in the makers’ kitchen creations, as well as on cocktail menus around town. However you shake it, these spirits are making waves. Square One owner Steve Neukomm says he sees the same thing happening with microdistilleries that occurred in years past with

boutique wineries and breweries, as craft boozes build their followings. “They’re attracting their own fan base of spirits aficionados,” he says. “It’s a different crowd than the beer drinkers. The people who come in and have our spirits are coming in specifically for that. It’s a passion thing.” Current success aside, Amalgamated and Square One are continuing to look for new spirits frontiers to conquer. Neukomm is hard at work on a wheat vodka, and Jones is currently aging a bourbon, dubbed Batch One, which will be ready for drinking in 2013. For now, these two distilleries are the only ones of their kind in St. Louis, but there are some stirrings outside the metro area. Crown Valley Brewing & Distilling Company in St. Genevieve recently debuted its first vodka offering, and is reportedly aging an American whiskey for release in the next 18 months, as well as a white whiskey, to be enjoyed as early as this fall. Who knows, maybe someday St. Louis will be known as much for its booze as it is for its beer.

> A mere glance at a recent Katy Perry video or the Dior Spring/Summer 2011 runway provides sufficient evidence of fashion’s current obsession with pinup-girl style. Seemingly inspired by those who forged the sexual revolution, the latest takes on trends that first appeared in the ’40s include a vampy, campy array of high-waisted shorts, tie-front bandeaus and accessories made even more girly with the addition of bow and flower embellishments. With so many cute, curve-hugging, retro pieces being hyped as must-haves, the season is no doubt a modernized throwback to the type of flirty femininity made famous by Betty Grable and Bettie Page. The Modern Polo Retro elements update the casual go-to. By Jill Manoff | Photo by Carmen Troesser > There are very few instances in which it is socially acceptable to wear items purchased at a sporting goods store—other than in water, in an arena or on a designated field on which things are swung. However, somebody somewhere designated polo shirts the wearfor-all-occasions exception. It’s time to B-E aggressive. This summer, step up your style game with a retro take on your go-to uniform. THE LAB GYM Client - mIKE MARKER Dear Mike, I was recently thinking about our journey together, about all the milestones we reached together. Remember when we first met? You walked in with a big smile on your face, ready to go, and all I could think was, “Uh oh, this is serious.”

I still have your old pants hanging on my wall.

Do you remember when we had to check your blood sugar every day to control your diabetes and blood pressure? How about all the doctors you were seeing?

You have a lot to be proud of, on behalf of them and myself, I want to thank you for having the courage to take this journey, the road less traveled, and seeing it through to the end. You are their champion, and you are my champion. You have set the path for so many others and are truly the first true ‘lab rat’ and founding member of our esteemed little society.

Do you remember all the weights you lifted, the bear crawls, the boot camp conditioning, the stretching, the mobility work? How awesome was it when you first lost over 100 pounds, and we counted the calories that we burned off of your body? Do you remember when you came off all of your diabetes and heart medications? How about when you did 100 pushups in a row on your 50th birthday?

I want you to know how much working with you has changed me and how it made me better at what I do. Your story is now helping many other people take matters into their own hands and change their lives, too. There has been a ripple effect that has saved many.

Haute Hostess Designer Trenna Travis talks the trend of fresh entertaining. By jennifer wells

> Local interior and graphic designer Trenna Travis knows a thing or two about entertaining, and her spot-on sense of style is always in demand. “Color is very of-the-moment,” she says. “Fresh and sunny shades in particular are currently on my radar.” ALIVE spent some time with Trenna perusing the area’s hottest home décor destinations for the latest takes on the fresh color trend, and we found plenty, but the journey didn’t end there. Our haute hostess also chose a fab entertaining outfit that represents her casual, yet elegant style. Judging by Trenna’s picks, we’re certain of her entertaining abilities—we just hope we get an invite to her next stylish shindig.

Slide Me Another These tasty mini burgers are the perfect crowd pleaser. By gwen ragno

Whether it’s your annual Fourth of July celebration, a family reunion or a potluck picnic with friends, sliders are the perfect choice for feeding a crowd. This unique beer burger slider recipe from the master chefs at Schnucks Cooks is sure to make a flavorful and versatile addition to any summertime menu—thanks to a sweet Hawaiian roll twist that balances out the bite of the slider’s traditional braised onions. Be sure to make plenty; it’s impossible to eat only one!

{Take it Up a Notch} Simply Dip-licious Because no slider experience is complete without getting a little saucy first. Chunky Tomato Chutney 1 large garlic clove, minced, 1 c. chopped onion, 2 tsp. vegetable oil, 1 can (28 oz.) drained diced tomatoes, 1/4 c. red wine vinegar, 2 tbsp. brown sugar, 1/4 tsp. salt.

R Cook garlic and onion in oil over medium-low heat, covered, until very tender. Stir in remaining ingredients and cook, uncovered, 25 minutes or until very thick, mashing tomatoes with rubber spatula.

blue cheese sauce 1/2 c. crumbled blue cheese, 1/4 c. mayonnaise, 1/4 c. sour cream, 2 tsp. cider vinegar, 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce.

R Mix and serve. Horseradish-Dijon Mayo 1/2 c. mayonnaise, 2 tbsp. refrigerated horseradish, 1 tbsp. whole grain mustard.

R Mix and serve.

Beer Burger Sliders With Braised Onions (Serves 8) WHAT YOU NEED: • 1 1/2 pounds extra-lean ground beef • 2 tablespoons and 1 cup dark beer, such as Samuel Adams® Boston Lager, divided • 1/2 teaspoon Schnucks Worcestershire sauce • 1/2 teaspoon Tabasco® sauce • 2 tablespoons Schnucks unsalted butter • 1 large onion, cut in half and thinly sliced • 1 teaspoon sugar • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 2 packages (8.8 ounces each) sweet Hawaiian snacker rolls, each cut in half • 16 slices snack-sized sharp cheddar cracker cuts

50 ALIVE STL JULY 2011

WHAT TO DO:

1. Line rimmed baking pan with plastic wrap. In medium bowl, add beef, 2 tablespoons beer, Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco and mix until well combined. Form beef mixture into 16 very thin patties, then place on baking pan. If desired, shape patties into squares to resemble a classic Midwestern slider. Cover patties with a second sheet of plastic wrap; freeze 10 to 15 minutes or until firm. 2. Meanwhile, in large skillet, melt butter over mediumhigh heat. Add onion and cook 5 minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally. Stir in 3/4 cup beer, sugar and salt. Reduce to medium and cook 15 to 18 minutes or until onion begins to brown and sauce reduces and thickens. Stir in remaining 1/4 cup beer and cook 2 to 3 minutes longer or until most liquid evaporates. 3. Preheat grill pan over medium-high heat for 2 minutes. In batches, add frozen patties and cook 4 to 5 minutes, turning once, or until internal temperature reaches 155°F for medium doneness. Place sliders on bottom halves of rolls; top with cheese and braised onions. Place top halves of rolls on sliders to serve.

{Perfect Pairing} Sam Adams Light Nothing complements a pile of burgers like a nice, cold beer. The slider recipe already makes good use of the rich, caramel smoothness of Samuel Adams Boston Lager, so you’ll want to choose a lighter option to stock the cooler. Sam Adams Light has a smooth, complex flavor that will play nice with the body and bite of the burgers—without being overpowered. With a healthy dose of malt flavor balanced with a touch of fruity Noble hops, this beer may be light on calories but definitely isn’t light on taste. (Complete selection of Sam Adams beer available at area Schnucks stores.)

The PNC Foundation is bringing fine arts into the spotlight in a big way with the new PNC Arts Alive grant program. Supporting everything from dance and theatre to music and visual arts, PNC Arts Alive will disperse a total of $500,000 during the first year of the initiative among a variety of St. Louis arts organizations to increase accessibility and engagement in the arts among diverse audiences. “PNC Arts Alive will enable these creative organizations to expand their programming and provide more opportunities for residents and visitors to access the arts,” says Jill McGuire, executive director of the Regional Arts Commission. “With so many worthy organizations struggling to meet operating costs and often competing for funding, PNC is helping overcome many obstacles in a challenging economy.”

*ARTS ALIVE The foundation has been working with the Regional Arts Commission and the Arts and Education Council to bring PNC Arts Alive to the St. Louis area. Over the next two years, $1 million in grant money will inject new life into the local arts scene, breeding creativity in the St. Louis community and creating exciting opportunities for budding young artists.

Sixteen organizations will put grants ranging from $20,000 to $60,000 to good use within the community. For example, The Center of Creative Arts will use the money to present a family theatre series with free performances for disadvantaged school groups and online resources for families. The Contemporary Art Museum of St. Louis will create a mobile art studio to bring visual art into communities with art teachers, supplies and iPads featuring exhibit images and interactive learning tools. And, The Shakespeare Festival will launch a live theater program using the streets of St. Louis communities as a stage, residents as the actors and local culture as the script.

Get Involved: One Meal at a Time With Cooking Matters, helping area kids make healthy eating choices is easy as pie. BY Emily barlean | Photos by eric lawton

> Team up with the dedicated staff of Operation Food Search, and you’ll be helping kids across St. Louis trade in meals with snap, crackle and pop for a skill set that allows them to sauté, sizzle and chop. How? By getting involved in the Share Our Strength Cooking Matters program—an initiative committed to making sure underprivileged kids not only have enough to eat, but also learn proper nutrition so they can lead healthy, active lives. Thanks to Operation Food Search volunteers and the Cooking Matters program, hundreds of St. Louis kids can take advantage of classes that teach them how to prepare healthy meals and adopt better eating habits. 52 ALIVE STL JULY 2011

Marian Middle School is just one participating school that offers Cooking Matters’ hands-on training with real chefs. Once a month, the school’s lunchroom transforms from a pizza-tossing cafeteria into a health-conscious culinary study group when a team of Operation Food Search volunteers and a group of fifth graders put on their chef’s caps, cinch up their aprons and prepare to learn healthy cooking habits.

says, ‘Mom let’s cook dinner tonight,’ you might get a family to sit down for a meal together—and that’s something.”

During the most recent class at Marian, the chopping and mixing was supervised and taught by Chef Lauren McCabe. Formerly a part of the corporate scene, McCabe left the business world to open Meal Thymes, an in-home chef service that brings meals straight to your kitchen. By following her passion for cooking, McCabe is thrilled to have the unique opportunity to work in a profession where she has time to give back.

“I’ve met kids who didn’t know that a peach had a pit,” she says. “You would be surprised at how many of them don’t realize that the chicken on their table used to be alive.”

“If kids leave these classes wanting to eat something that isn’t packaged, you’ve made a difference,” she says. “You might not change the world, but if a kid

Although healthy eating may seem like a cakewalk (minus the cake) to some, over the course of her time at Cooking Matters, McCabe has realized this is not always the case, especially for underprivileged students.

Luckily, with hands-on meal preparation, practical nutrition information and food budgeting skills, the children of St. Louis are learning, one meal at a time, that dinner doesn’t have to be cooked in a microwave. So, the next time you sit down to enjoy a meal at your favorite restaurant, remember there are kids in St. Louis who don’t know where their next meal is coming from and others who think chicken nuggets and gas station burritos are the ultimate feast. With Cooking Matters, you can team up with top chefs like McCabe to help end hunger and encourage proper nutrition—and maybe even pick up some healthy cooking habits of your own. front woman Kate Voegele might have stolen Hollywood’s heart, but the actressslash-pop-star is still Midwest every step of the way.

by

Jill Manoff photographs by

Erin Shimazu cover photo by

Christy Kurtz

Her new album title says “Gravity Happens,” but you’d never know it by Midwest native Kate Voegele’s rapid rise to Hollywood stardom. Though she packed her bags for LA just two years ago, the popular singer/songwriter/actress/free-spirit—who will pause in STL this month with Natasha Bedingfield’s “Less Is More Tour”—has already experienced success in both music and TV (as a recurring character on the CW’s “One Tree Hill”), leaving no doubt that she is on the fast track. However, not so surprisingly, she’s quick to own that she is still “Ohio” at heart; as they say, Cleveland rocks. DEFYING GRAVITY Oddly enough, the story of Voegele’s rise to fame reads much like the far-fetched plot of an oftguilty pleasure-serving teen drama. An unlikely series of events defined by a number of recurring highs, the 24-year-old songstress’ career has only just premiered—and already young fans are so sucked in, you’d think they were following a TV love triangle. Like, say, that of Chase, Alex and Mia, the latter of whom she’s been playing on “One Tree Hill” for the past four seasons. An Ohio-bred musician, Voegele was practically thrust into the CW’s notoriously angst-ridden spotlight (that has ignited A-list stars like Michelle Williams and Katie Holmes) following an audition her manager merely mentioned to her, and which she attended, “Ya know, for the heck of it.” She had already recorded her first album, 2007’s “Don’t Look Away” (composed of what she now calls “great grassroots stuff ”) under the MySpace Records label—making her at least partially qualified for the planned four-episode part that called for a singer-slashactress. Still, it seemed a long shot. “I never had [an acting] coach, and it was the first acting I had ever done,” Voegele admits. “But it actually came really naturally to me. I concluded that a really good way to go about it was to just be the character, rather than be too methodic about it—to bring things from my own life to Mia, rather than try to act like her, if that makes sense.” It made perfect sense to “One Tree Hill” producer Mark Schwahn, whose hunch about a green talent proved true and resulted in a golden platform for Voegele’s first love, made less temporary as a result of great fan support. She joined the cast in the midst of the series’ fifth season as Mia Catalano (a young artist who signed with central character Peyton Sawyer’s record label)—whose lyrical sound pulled from Voegele’s own songbook, and whose free-spirited nature Voegele likens to her own. “[Mia’s] friendly, she likes everybody and she’s very casual,” Voegele says. “I love that she’s very non-pretentious; I’m like that as well.” Ironic, considering the show’s popular theme song, in alivemag.com

which Gavin DeGraw holds, “I Don‘t Want To Be Anything Other Than Me.” A more recent song debut was Voegele’s own “Heart in Chains,” which she performed on the season eight finale (made part of the plot that played out the day before our interview). Not so coincidentally, it was on the same day her third album, “Gravity Happens,” dropped. And it read like a milestone. Seeing her in her element, singing her heart out onstage before excited fans (even if they were placed on marks and cued to scream), few would believe Voegele was once a timid high schooler who preferred to keep her guitar playing—a passion from the time she picked up the instrument at age 15—a secret because “it was cooler to play on the soccer team.” Luckily, her father intervened. “My dad snuck up to my room, took the demos that I was writing and played them for people around Cleveland,” Voegele recalls. “I was really mad at him until he started getting me gigs. I started getting booked as the opening act around Cleveland, and the radio stations started paying attention and were excited. I don’t know what it would have taken for me to go out there and get that myself. I needed that push, and it really helped me gain confidence to see that positive response so early.” TAKING DOWN WALLS Those who have followed her work can claim witness to the fact that her confidence continues to grow with time, especially in her songwriting. “I was never someone who was comfortable showing my feelings; so, when I first started writing, I wasn’t as close to it,” Voegele explains. “I didn’t want people to know I was writing about my own life.” But, for “Gravity Happens,” the walls came down. “This record is definitely the most honest I’ve ever been with my writing and my performance… it’s one of those things where you can’t help but be inspired by your own life and the people in your life,” she admits. “I think it makes it so much more relatable if you can be as straightforward as possible. And it’s kind of fun being able to put out there exactly what it is that I want to say.”

In one album highlight, “Sandcastles,” the lyrics, “I don’t have a plan at all, but I got this six-string religion” point to the “craziness” associated with growing up and finding comfort in music. “It’s probably my favorite song on the album,” Voegele professes. “The idea came about while I was on the beach watching some kids make sandcastles; it was at a time in my life when I had to make some pretty tough decisions about my career, and I was thinking that what they were doing looked a lot easier. Ultimately, what got me through that time was music.” And it’s safe to say she wasn’t tuned into a Top 40 station. “I grew up with my dad playing me James Taylor songs before bed every night,” she recalls. “I’ve always loved classic songwriters like Carole King, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, and one of my favorite artists is Patty Griffin— she is just an unbelievable singer and songwriter. Hers was one of the first records I bought when I started playing guitar. It’s just her and her guitar; she can really make the magic happen with just those two ingredients.” For Voegele, the same recipe—paired with life lessons learned in Cleveland—has spelled success. “I grew up in a community where people helped each other out because it was nice, without expecting anything in return,” she says. “That spirit taught me that being a musician should be about giving people something to make their day better, to inspire them.” It would only seem appropriate that Voegele is currently serving up “pockets full of sunshine” across the US as the opening act on Natasha Bedingfield’s tour. As much as her life has imitated her art and vice versa, it’s safe to assume it’s only a matter of time before she graduates to headliner. Mia’s days as a background singer and keyboard player expired long ago, of course, but the real-life musician and artist at heart is up for whatever the future holds. “I just want to be making music and making a living being creative,” Voegele concludes. “I hope to be making a lot of people smile.”

Today’s workout repertoire has come a long way since the monotonous days of Jazzercise and step aerobics. Today, it’s all about fitness with a twist, so there’s no excuse for getting stuck in a workout rut. Sick of the gym? Try Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Want to tone while getting flexible? Get off the ground with aerial arts. These trendy routines will get you fit—and keep you entertained— whether you’re shaking your butt in Zumba or getting it kicked in boot camp.

Be Hard Core

Jennifer Aniston and other toned-up female celebs have proven that muscles aren’t just for men. But the look is not for the faint of heart. That all-over tone and definition only comes from being hard core à la boot camps and other rigorous full-body workouts fit for the militant and athletic-minded. If neither apply, proceed with caution, but know the payoff is oh-so-worth-it.

7 Places to Go All Out R Think you’re up for the same grueling routine performed by the Israeli Defense Force? Put your bod to the test at Xtreme Krav Maga & Fitness, which teaches the form of self-defense that Israeli soldiers are trained in. The program is sure to kick your butt into gear and give you the skills to put a world of hurt on someone, should you find yourself in a spot of trouble. Fenton, 636.577.1226.

R Punching and kicking your way to a better physique is also a great way to relieve stress. At Sweat Poud 4 Pound, you can unleash your inner fighter—and get rock-hard—with boxing and kickboxing classes, as well as resistance and core training. Hit it like a pro with the Boxer’s Workout or burn up to 1,000 calories per hour at Thai Kickboxing. Clayton, 314.725.2714. alivemag.com

R Another form of self-defense that doesn’t require kicking and punching is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a martial art-based system that’s as strenuous as it is controlled. Learn from one of the best—UFC fighter Kyle Watson, who offers classes at various gyms around town. watsonbjj.com, 260.255.4785.

R Boot camps have been topping the hardcore, get-fit list for some time, and for good reason. Leave it to the pros at Ellipse Fitness to push you to your limit with their four-, six- and 12-week camps. The 12-week AMP’D program combines muscle-toning resistance training, fatburning cardio, interval workouts and nutritional coaching in the proven boot camp environment. South County, 314.846.0003. R If you’re not up for a collective butt-kicking— and one-on-one is more your thing—The Fitness Edge offers unmatched personal training in

hard-core fashion. Designed by Michael Jaudes, a two-time honoree on the “Men’s Health” Top 100 Personal Trainers list, these sessions are sure to test your willpower and get you into top condition. Creve Coeur, 314.993.3343.

R For a different type of intense, look no further than CrossFit, a no-nonsense regimen that’ll have you working out Police Academy style, using the same get-fit moves trusted by Olympic trainees and pro athletes. Try it at CrossFit St. Louis. Brentwood, 314.323.8233. R The newest method to hit the hard-core lineup is High Oxygen Training, and you can find it locally at Illuminate. The new turbo approach turns resistance weight lifting into an aerobic exercise, which does double duty on your bod—and kicks traditional anaerobic resistance training up a serious notch. Just Dance

Everyone knows the best workouts are the ones where you don’t even feel like you’re working out. Hitting the dance floor is one of the sneakiest and most satisfying ways to work every muscle in your body, melt fat and incinerate calories. Opt for graceful ballet or racy burlesque; an hour of either can easily burn 1,000 calories—and make you work up a serious sweat.

5 Ways to Shake It R Dancers and ballerina wannabes are flocking in droves to try The Bar Method. With a focus on stretching and toning, this workout provides similar benefits to the dance form itself. But don’t expect an easy workout. These routines will sculpt your body by working muscles you didn’t even know you had. Town & Country, 636.527.9797.

R If ballet isn’t your bag, maybe you’re more at home with the saucier gals showing off their fancy footwork at Fit Chix Fitness Studio, a trendy go-to for burlesque and pole dancing. If you’re not quite ready for the pole, try their hip-hop classes. Creve Coeur and Clayton, fitsexybody.com.

R Zumba has been muy caliente and shows no signs of cooling. Mixing fast footwork with Latin flair, Zumba gets your heart rate up with hip movements and hot beats. Literally meaning “to move fast and have fun,” Zumba is great for the joie-de-vivre set who like to dance and sweat. “Shake your bon bon” at Xtreme Zumba Fitness. Fenton, 636.577.1226.

R Belly Dancing is a sexy way to learn an old art form while having fun and losing weight. The core-enhancing routine produces flexibility, rhythm and gentle muscle tone—and who doesn’t love bare midriff outfits that jingle? Find classes at Lotus Arts Studio. Benton Park, 618.530.5416. R Nothing is more reminiscent of childhood summer fun than hula hooping. The classes popping up around town, courtesy of STL Hoop Club, promise to maximize waist-whittling results. Whether you want to hula like a pro or just have a laugh while working up a sweat, classes are a ton of fat-burning fun. Around town, stlhoopclub.com. 68 ALIVE STL JULY 2011

Become a Yogi There’s nothing more legit than a fitness format

that’s been around for thousands of years. And what better way to enjoy the undeniable physical and mental benefits of yoga than to try it with a few twists? These modern interpretations of the fitness classic are as great for beginners as they are for pros looking to rejuvenate their tried and true routines. So the next time you grab your mat, think yoga…plus.

6 Ways to Plus it Up R Certain things just go together, like bare feet and yoga mats. When masterfully paired, pilates and yoga are a match made in heaven. Purists may resist Yogalates, but for those who love strengthening and stretching, this fitness fusion is one to try. Find it at The Center for Mind, Body & Spirit. Clayton, 314.725.6767.

R Liberal yogis are cashing in on an unlikely combo—yoga plus spinning. Tone and burn on the bike, then stretch and relax on your mat during a unique hybrid class offered by St. Louis’ Original Spinning. Yoga-spin enthusiasts will tell you there’s no better way to wind down from an intense cycling session than with the relaxation of yoga. Brentwood, 314.645.7746.

R A love-it-or-hate-it brand of yoga, Bikram has a cult-like following, and the 105 degrees of heat (believe it or not) can become highly addictive. But this yoga-plus isn’t for the faint of heart. While the heat helps you get deeper into poses, it’s important to come properly hydrated lest you leave feeling woozy. Try it at Bikram Yoga St. Louis. Clayton and Chesterfield, yogastlouis.com. R If you’re more of a traditionalist looking for some extra “oomph,” look no further than Power Yoga, a format based on a series of movements and breathing exercises that increases concentration and builds heat and energy in the body while helping you release stress and develop strength, focus, balance and flexibility. The Pilates and Yoga Center of St. Louis offers private instruction in power yoga and a variety of other techniques, so you can tap into your inner yogi one-on-one with an experienced trainer. Ladue, 314.569.9400.

R Finding the time to exercise with a new baby can be as elusive as a full night’s sleep. Mommy and Me Yoga at Urban Breath helps moms get their pre-baby bodies back—while simultaneously bonding with their little ones. Fitness plus mental well-being sans nanny? Now that’s an equation moms can get used to. Dogtown, 314.421.9642.

R For those who really want to get creative with their yoga practice, Marbles Yoga offers Acroyoga, a blend of yoga’s spiritual wisdom, the dynamic power of acrobatics and the therapeutic element of Thai massage. The unmistakable combination will leave you weak in the knees—and coming back for more. Benton Park, 314.225.7701.

Formal & Fabulous

real weddings

A well known St. Louis couple’s black-tie affair to remember.

M

Marcie Epstein and David Siteman Garland didn’t think much of their first encounter during a casual dinner with their respective dates at The Drunken Fish in the Central West End. But after the newly single David and Marcie kept bumping into each other, Marcie decided to take their chance encounters to the next level and asked David out. After a handful of dates, an eightmonth courtship and a surprise proposal that nearly knocked Marcie off her feet, the well known St. Louis couple began planning their spectacular black-tie wedding. Not ones to take themselves too seriously, David and Marcie opted for a formal yet fun affair that emphasized their festive and free-spirited personalities. The Details

The Dress Finding a dress that would reflect Marcie’s classic taste was of utmost importance. During a trip to California, Marcie found her dream dress: an A-line Amsale gown that was as elegant as it was classic. As a personal touch to the designer gown, Marcie added a Swarovski crystal sash that emphasized her petite waistline and enhanced the delicate silhouette of the dress. An amazing diamond necklace on loan from David’s grandma perfectly complemented the gown and took care of her “something old” for the day.

The Ring After trying on a bevy of styles, Marcie found the perfect ring at Elleard Heffern Jewelers in Clayton. Drawn by its unique design, Marcie knew she had found “the one” in a round-cut diamond with a diamond encrusted square setting. Adding a touch of tradition to the modern ring, David’s mother gifted Marcie her wedding band, which she customized with simple jewel details. The Venue The couple knew they wanted a venue with a formal ambiance and contemporary style. The Four Seasons turned out to be the perfect place for their traditional Jewish wedding ceremony and black-tie reception because it held an irreplaceable sentimental value. “The Four Seasons was really special to us because it was one of our first dates,” Marcie explains. “We went there after we got engaged to celebrate so we thought it would be nice to come full circle and celebrate our wedding there.” One hundred and seventy-five of the couple’s family and friends looked on as Marcie and David exchanged hand-written vows underneath a contemporary chuppah—one of their favorite memories of the day—before dancing the night away during the fun-filled reception. The Flowers Blush-pink peonies and roses made up Marcie’s stunning wedding bouquet while David’s boutonniere matched his bride with a single blush-toned rose. The centerpieces were filled with breathtaking Esperanza roses submerged in tall modern vases, which magnified the oversized pink blooms. The Fun Marcie and David hired the Laughing Penguins Photo Booth Studio to capture the evening’s most entertaining moments. Costume props were provided so the dressed-up guests could pose with everything from feather boas to top hats. A projection screen captured each funny moment for guests to see during the reception, which was a huge hit the entire night long. Not only did David and Marcie provide their guests with fun-filled entertainment throughout the evening, but they also incorporated a less than traditional snack. At 11pm, guests were treated to cookies and individual milk cartons, a fun and delicious surprise that guests really enjoyed. “We tried to make it formal and nice; people could dress up, and have a blast while doing it,” David explains. “We’re not ‘things’ people; we’re much more ‘experience’ people.”

How We Met I met Sam through a friend in 2006 after mentioning to her how hard I thought it was to find an attractive guy with good morals. She said I should meet her boss and convinced me to visit her at work. As I walked in, I spotted Sam and froze with shyness. I tried to escape, but he walked over and asked my name. For a week, we talked on the phone until he asked me out. Our first date was at Lucas Park Grille, and Sam quickly picked up on my habit of wrapping my drink in a napkin to prevent cold hands. Soon, he was doing it for me, and that won me over. It wasn't long before we became inseparable, and once I met his family, I knew I could spend the rest of my life with him.

How We Met It was April 2010, and I had been working at the same company as John for about seven months when we started becoming friends. As our conversations at work grew, he asked if I’d like to hang out sometime. Because I was already having friends over for drinks on my patio that evening, I invited him over, too. We had an absolute blast, and all of my friends loved him! The more we got to know each other, the more I thought he was a sweetheart. Our friendship grew into something so much deeper as time went by. When Christmas came around that year, friends and family had already been asking when we were going to get engaged. They definitely saw the spark between us.

The Proposal Three and a half years later, we went to Sugar Creek Winery. On the way there, I tried to put my hand on Sam’s lap, and he pushed it away. It was strange, but I didn’t worry about it. At the winery, we chose a spot with a beautiful view and sat down. He asked me to sit, too, but I didn’t want to get grass on my clothes. He got down on one knee, and I saw the ring. In between our crying, he asked me to marry him, and I said, “Yes!” Soon after, I realized the reason he pushed my hand away in the car was because the ring was in his pocket! The Big Day September 23, 2011 at Mount Pleasant Winery in Augusta, MO.

How We Met Justin and I crossed paths at Mizzou as undergrads when we had classes in the same building. We smiled at each other and said hello, but it never went beyond that. I graduated from Mizzou in 2007 and returned to St. Louis, and he went back to Kansas City after graduating in 2009. One day, I was surprised to see he had messaged me on Facebook and asked how I had been. Soon, we went from just occasionally messaging each other to frequently talking on the phone. Finally, he asked me out. We met in Columbia, MO to have dinner and see a movie. It was the first weekend of many that we spent together. Justin and I traveled back and forth between St. Louis and Kansas City nearly every weekend after that. It was definitely hard, but worth it. The Proposal Justin and I went to Las Vegas for my birthday. On the first night, we celebrated with dinner at Tao, and then Justin suggested we go to the Eiffel Tower. The view was beautiful. We asked an attendant to take a photo of us, and I saw Justin say something to her. I thought he was telling her what to capture in the background. After a couple of photos, he said, “I have one more surprise for you. I saved the best one.” With that, he got down on one knee, pulled out a ring and asked me to marry him! I was shocked, so my first response was, “Are you serious?” and then I said, “Yes!” It was the perfect birthday with the perfect guy.

The Proposal It was one of the worst winter days of the year. John drove through a blizzard to pick up the engagement ring—he was too excited to wait to propose! After a romantic dinner at our house, he ran out to his car, came back inside and asked me to join him in the other room. He closed the door, and I saw he had bought a dozen red roses and our favorite wine. Getting down on one knee, he held out a box and opened it up. There was my beautiful engagement ring! He asked, “Jamie, will you be my wife?” and I said, “Yes!” The Big Day December 17, 2011 in Cancun, Mexico. Reception on February 25, 2012 at The Quail Ridge Lodge in Wentzville, MO.

The Big Day May 26, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church and The Palladium.

The Perfect Fit St. Louis brides-to-be say “yes” to custom engagement rings. By gwen ragno

The Euro Shank two-carat round cut diamond on a band with hand-engraved edges

Five-carat cushion cut diamond on a Mavrik Eternity Band, surrounded by two-carat round cut diamonds

“I’d say 99 percent of the rings I sell are not the ones on display, but custom designs,” says Igal Alon, owner of Mavrík Fine Jewelry, a Kirkwoodbased jeweler specializing in diamonds, fine gems and original jewelry. Whether you’re shopping alone or as a couple, it helps to do some research before you hit the stores to learn the lingo, get comfortable with what’s out there and begin forming an idea of what you want. Alon spends about 10 minutes with new customers to educate them about the basic structure of a ring and the endless possibilities for customizing the design while staying within a budget. “Many of the customers who come into my shop have no idea of the style they want when they begin; we help direct their search through questions about her personal style and lifestyle,” Alon explains. “Does she prefer yellow gold or white gold? Is her clothing style more contemporary or vintage? All of these things come into consideration when designing a ring.”

74 ALIVE STL JULY 2011

No matter where you go, a good place to start is with the five Cs of diamonds: carat, color, clarity, cut and certificate. Color and clarity have a lot to do with the price of the diamond and are measured by ratings that indicate where it falls on the quality scale—from colorless to light yellow, or from no flaws at all to very small ones that aren’t visible to the naked eye. The cut determines the style of the ring and how the center stone will be set in the band. The next step is to start shopping. Visit several diamond shops to see what’s out there and what qualities strike you as attractive in different rings. If you don’t absolutely fall in love with any of the rings on display, don’t settle—consider customization instead.

The Michelle three-carat cushion cut stone set in a platinum band with a micro-bit setting

Use the jewelry displays as a source of inspiration and a showcase of what’s possible rather than a rigid selection. Figure out what elements you like about several different rings, then sit down with the jeweler and work out a design that combines all of them. The result: a perfect ring no one else can ever claim. The turnaround for custom engagement rings varies. At Mavrík, it takes about four weeks, once the design is finalized. Giving a nod to Mavrík’s motto that “the customer is the designer,” Alon names each customized engagement ring after the bride-to-be it was created for—a nice touch any groom can use to his advantage.

Beautiful skin at any age

By Sheniqua Faulkner

ith thousands of skincare products that promise to lift, plump, firm, diminish, enhance, smooth, tone and everything in between, it can be intimidating to know which is right for your skin. And because our skin and its needs change as we age, it seems that once we think we have it all figured out, our skin freaks. With these nofuss tips, you’ll solve the skincare puzzle and maintain healthy, beautiful skin for life. 88 ALIVE STL JULY 2011

20s Prevent

The Good Your skin is a

collagen-producing powerhouse, which lends plumpness to the surface that reflects light for a youthful glow that women in their 30s, 40s and beyond envy.

The Bad An “I’m young

and invincible” attitude can make it tempting to skimp on your skincare routine or cause you to be unnecessarily harsh on that baby face.

The Ugly Breakouts, oili-

ness, large pores and tired eyes with dark circles from late nights of studying—or partying.

The Answer

Practice a gentle, simple routine in your 20s, but stick to it. Establishing good habits now will be the best investment you can make in your skin for the long haul. X Cleanser

Moisturizer

Nighttime Treatment

Seek a mild cleanser and skip those with perfumes or dyes. Harsh cleansers strip skin of natural oils that are useful for lubricating the surface and keeping the pH of the skin mantle. If your skin is dry, use a milky or creamy cleanser; if it’s oily, choose a gentle foam or gel.

Take your pick; just be sure it has an SPF of at least 20 and wear it every day (any UVA/UVB protection your makeup might have is typically not enough). If your face tends to be an oil slick by mid-morning, look for a moisturizer that’s oilfree. Also, check the label for ingredients such as rice protein and silica— they’re great mattifiers.

Most dermatologists recommend 20-somethings start using a retinoid, vitamin A-derived prescription such as Retin-A or Tazorac that are fabulous for treating acne, smoothing fine lines and keeping collagen levels up. Gentler, over-thecounter retinols are also effective. Before bed, use a pea-sized amount all over your face.

Lifestyle Tip

Stop smoking! If you smoke, now is the time to quit while your skin has resiliency. In addition to the scary health risks, smoking leads to premature skin aging. Nicotine causes the blood vessels in the outermost layers of your skin to narrow, which impairs blood flow to your skin. This means it doesn’t get as much oxygen and important nutrients, such as Vitamin A. What’s more, many of the 4,000+ chemicals in tobacco smoke also damage the collagen and elastin that give your skin elasticity. So, put down the pack for good. Smokefree.gov has great information and tools to help you quit.

alivemag.com

30s Repair

The Good By now, you’ve

probably established the importance of a skincare routine and likely have an overall confidence in your appearance that younger women may lack.

The Bad Old habits die hard;

now is the time to transition from young-adult skincare to a more serious anti-aging approach, which can be difficult if you’re dealing with breakouts and fine lines at the same time.

The Answer

At this age, it’s all about using the right type of products—and applying them consistently—to fight acne and fine lines simultaneously. Look for products with dual-preventing ingredients to treat both sides of your skin during this tricky in-between age. X Cleanser

Moisturizer

Nighttime Treatment

In the morning, wash with a cleanser that contains alpha hydroxy acids. AHAs encourage cell turnover, which can begin to slow down as you age. At night, use a more soothing, creamy or milky cleanser.

Continue to moisturize with a product containing UVA/UVB protection during the day, but now look for one that has a boost of antioxidants, such as Vitamin C. Puffy eyes? Use an eye cream that contains caffeine. Plagued by dark under-eye circles? Seek one with brightening soy, kojic acid or licorice.

Continue with your diligent retinoid or retinol treatment. More so than in your 20s, this step is vital for combating fine lines and loss of firmness. If you notice your overthe-counter retinol treatment is not as effective as it was in your 20s, talk to your dermatologist about getting more potency with a prescription.

The Ugly Sun damage, discol-

oration from melasma (“the mask of pregnancy” or from birth control usage), fine lines and wrinkles—some deepening, especially those around the mouth and eyes.

40s

Lifestyle Tip

Stress less, sleep more! Stress of daily life can manifest itself on your face in the form of out-ofnowhere acne eruptions, blotchiness or all-over dullness. One of the most effective ways to bust stress is to get plenty of sleep. Not only is snoozing restorative to skin, it gives you the energy you need to conquer things that might otherwise send you into a stress-induced tizzy. Skin (and sanity) saved!

and beyond

Rejuvenate

The Good You’ve seen fad

products come and go, and by now, you’re sharp enough to discern gimmicks from what really works.

The Bad

If you haven’t been maintaining a good skincare regimen, it can be difficult to start being diligent now. But it’s not impossible, and the results will be well worth it.

The Ugly Deepening lines,

creases and wrinkles, saggy skin, cumulative sun damage, loss of moisture, dullness.

alivemag.com

The Answer

Now it’s time to take your skincare routine to a whole new level with extra measures of protection and prevention. And don’t be afraid to involve a dermatologist to assure you’re doing what’s best for your complexion. X Cleanser

Moisturizer

Nighttime Treatment

If your skin is dry and tight or irritated after washing, be sure to use a rich, creamy cleanser and avoid ones with salicylic acids or AHAs. 40- and 50-something skin is thinner than that of its younger counterparts, so harsh acids can strip the skin easily. If your skin is a little oilier, seek a wash that has a very mild AHA and use it only once a day.

You should still be slathering on a broadspectrum sun protection daily, and be sure to wear sunglasses and a hat when necessary. Depending on your specific skincare concerns, add a serum, lotion or cream containing peptides (helps with sagginess), antioxidants or humectants such as hyaluronic acid, shea butter or argan oil.

In your 40s and beyond, a prescription retinoid treatment is ideal for smoothing deeper lines, breaking up dark patches and boosting firmness, all of which will help recapture luminosity. You can skip an eye cream by using your retinoid carefully around the eyes.

Lifestyle Tip

Stay hydrated! At 40 years old and beyond, skin’s natural hydration is diminished. Because skin is 75 percent water, it’s important to drink plenty of water throughout the day in addition to applying topical moisturizers. Hydrated skin is plumper, smoother and healthier.
