thegreenery Longtime green blogger Jeff McIntire-Strasburg digs into the sustainability scene—in St. Louis and beyond.
New boutiques are opening (welcome, Brando!), old favorites are returning (congrats, Cortney Gene), new lines are launching (hello, Vogue Footwear) and local fashion professionals are landing in the national spotlight (bravo, CENTRO Models)—just in time for fashion's most important season. I, for one, have definitely been inspired by what I'm seeing and hearing on the local style front (p.18). Bright colors and energetic patterns (as spotted on the runways by Jill, p.34-38) have given me the boost I need to power through what's left of the cold weather. And, as if I needed any more excuses to embark on yet another spring shopping spree, the 50-plus local boutique and luxury department store looks in seasonperfect pastels, daring lace and updated florals that we've highlighted throughout the issue are ones I simply can't pass up. The hottest trends in cosmetics and skincare are a new area of focus for me this season (as anti-aging products keep sneaking into my beauty drawer), and our ALIVE Health+Beauty book (p.75) couldn't be a better place to start. Runway inspirations again took center stage as we uncovered the top hair, makeup and skincare trends and brought them to real life with the help of St. Louis' best beauty pros (p.80). Cutting-edge beauty offerings like Dr. Paul Rottler's Latisse eyelash-enhancing application, local makeup artist Christina Passanise's cosmetic airbrushing services and Regal Image Salon's new hot-for-Hollywood dip and dye coloring are all on my list of immediate must-haves on the beauty front. As for the latest minimally-invasive beauty procedures on the STL market (read about the Top 10 on p.76), photofacial skin rejuvenation has certainly caught my eye—but is more likely to make my 10-year list. Because a true fashion and beauty follower can never plan too far ahead.

f there's one thing this year's Spring Fashion and Beauty Issue has shown me, it's that the St. Louis fashion scene is alive and well. From the swanky book party, hosted by Susan Sherman, that I attended for our cover man, STL-bred “fashionisto-in-chief” Derek Blasberg (read more about the fashion insider on p.58), to the pages and pages of runway looks our Fashion Editor extraordinaire, Jill Manoff, and I planned for the Spring 2012 Runway Report (p.68), there's no doubt that spring fashion has sprung in a big way in St. Louis.

Jennifer Wells
Lily Liu
When researching this month's Spring Beauty Manual (p.80), Jennifer Wells was happily surprised at how much St. Louis has to offer. “From cutting-edge technology to world-renowned makeup artists—there's definitely no shortage of beauty solutions in St. Louis,” Jennifer says. She thoroughly enjoyed talking tips with the area's most sought-after beauty professionals, but her favorite task was shopping for the photo shoot. “Isn't it every girl's dream to scour top shops for the ultimate beauty cache?”
In her search for all things beautiful, photography has become the preferred medium for Lily Liu to share her original perspectives. She thrives on finding interesting and distinctively different angles of every beautiful creature and scene. A photographer for ALIVE for the past year, Lily enjoyed this month's shoot at Half and Half (p.20). Lily is an event and portrait photographer, as well as a full-time buyer for a local eye care company. See more of her work at lilyliuphoto.com.
Carmen Troesser
Kate Allen
Photographer Carmen Troesser was excited to experiment with some of the cosmetics and beauty products featured in the Spring Beauty Manual (p.80). Her absolute favorite was the Hanley Fold Farm Lip Balm, made with all-natural ingredients—which will have to be alternated with the Bobbi Brown red lipstick, of course. More of Carmen's work can be seen at carmentroesser.com.
Mizzou grad Kate Allen knows weddings. Whether she's attending them, planning them or covering them for ALIVE, she knows the ins and outs of “I Do's.” The marriage of Mizzou alums Elma Hadziselimovic and Garry Garrison was a perfect fit for our Real Weddings contributor. Read more about this happy couple, and their big Mizzou-inspired day on p.48.

Valerie Steele
ALIVE catches up with fashion powerhouse Valerie Steele, just in time for her St. Louis appearance.
Brando
Spring Fever
Interview by Jill Manoff
The curator of more than 20 enticing fashion exhibitions, and author of an impressive number of as-alluring books (including “Fetish: Fashion, Sex and Power”), Steele will be in town April 13-14 to serve as the honored guest at Craft Alliance's ARTrageous Baubles Ball, and give a lecture at Washington University. ALIVE: Fashion is your career; what do you say to people who pooh-pooh it? Valerie Steele: I've always found it fascinating that there's so much hostility towards fashion. It's so often dismissed as being frivolous, or downright negative; it's “consumerist,” “bourgeois,” “conformist,” “vanity,” whatever—which means it's hitting a nerve. The fact that fashion is so controversial and often seen as negative just makes me feel more interested. A: Why your interest in the corset? VS: I did an exhibition and a book about
Eva Adams
corsetry, in which I explored some of the myths surrounding it. Women wore corsets for 400 years—often in defiance of male authorities. The corset functioned to make you look more attractive, younger and slimmer, more upperclass. In a way, the corset never really disappeared—it's just that fashion became more revealing in the 20th century. Corsetry has been replaced by diet and exercise, even liposuction. A: Are high heels closely related? VS: High heels, like corsets, are prime symbols of erotic femininity. It's all about the stories we tell ourselves about shoes—that only women wear high heels, high heels are sexier, etc. And, they do change the way your body looks. High heels tilt your pelvis back and your bosom and bottom out,
A: What was it about Daphne Guinness that inspired your latest book and exhibition? VS: I think Daphne is the most exciting and inspiring fashion icon—the only real fashion icon in the world today. Fashion for her is an art form, and she's fearlessly independent about what she wears. I think she flies the flag for individuality. In a time when people are dressing more and more alike, that's really inspiring. A: What's your next big project? VS: I'm working on a big exhibition for 2013 called “Queer Style,” about the relationship between gay people and fashion over the last 100 years.

Double Identity
Old Rock House has launched “Live and Local STL,” a new monthly music series that pairs local craft beers with indie bands. It’s the brainchild of manager Brian McCormac who realized that many music fans are also interested in the craft beer movement.

> When Mike Randolph, owner of The Good Pie, opened the breakfast and lunch spot Half and Half in Clayton last summer, it immediately garnered rave reviews. Now, Randolph is opening his third St. Louis restaurant—without moving an inch. Clayton restaurant space doesn't come cheap, and Half and Half was sitting idle during the evenings. Randolph considered simply extending the hours of Half and Half, but quickly shelved that idea in favor of transforming it into a spirited Mexican eatery, dubbed Medianoche (Spanish for midnight), after hours. Creative Comida Adhering to his philosophy of making approachable food that he loves and does well, Randolph says Mexican cuisine was a natural choice. The Good Pie was born of his love for pizza, and his enthusiasm for breakfast and lunch foods led to Half and Half. Now, Medianoche gives him the outlet to serve his unique brand of Mexican cuisine. For appetizers, Medianoche offers such fare as guacamole (prepared tableside), chilled avocado soup with poached shrimp and a variety of salsas in the $2-$9 range. A selection of tacos, served simply with red onions and cilantro, are $8-$10 for three, with options like fried pork belly, lamb barbacoa and pork carnitas on lightly-crisped homemade tortillas from Cherokee Street. Entrées from $12-$16 feature sweetbreads, chicken leg and thigh confit, pork chops and seared red snapper with mole verde. By using traditional Mexican food and 20 ALIVE STL MARCH 2012

techniques with a touch of his own culinary style, Randolph hopes to change his customers' perception of Mexican food. Libations include a varied selection of margaritas and a beer list of both American craft brews and traditional Mexican lagers. The cocktail lineup focuses on Southwestern-inspired rum-based drinks, derived from classic cocktails—but with a “south of the border” twist. Midnight Makeover The menu isn't the only thing that takes on a new identity when Half and Half closes its doors each night. The décor transforms as well—enough that Randolph says people can eat there during the day, then come back in the evening and feel like they're in
a different place. Original photographs of Mexico, taken by family friends, hang on the walls with various Mexican-inspired decorations. Candles grace the tables, and low lighting plays a role in recreating the atmosphere for night. There is no new outdoor signage. Instead, Randolph is relying on word of mouth to let people know it's there. So, read our lips: The sign may still read Half and Half, but after hours, it's the alter-ego Medianoche you're dining with.
> Half and Half and Medianoche are located at 8135 Maryland Ave. in Clayton. Medianoche is open for dinner Tues.-Thurs., 5-9pm, and on Fri. and Sat., until 10pm.
The beers selected will always be new, and sometimes even exclusive releases. Whichever descriptive words the brewery uses to describe the beer, McCormack finds a local band he thinks shares the same attributes. The first concert in January featured Schlafly Scotch Ale and a performance by Celtic music duo Joe Stickley and Sean Canan. The next “Live and Local” event is set for March 13, with Urban Chestnut’s Calypso IPA and local band Big Brother Thunder & The Master Blasters. The concerts will be held about once a month, whenever the venue has an opening. Doors open at 7pm with a talk and beer tasting by the featured brewery. alivemag.com

Hot Spot: Hamburger Mary’s Fall down the rabbit hole—and into the whimsical world of this new Midtown burger joint. By Cristy miller | Photos by Jennifer Silverberg
> “Eat, Drink and be…Mary” is the mantra of this new Midtown hangout with flair, and rightfully so. In its twomonth existence, the whimsical burger joint is already infusing a unique brand of food and fun into the neighborhood, and positioning itself as a friendly spot for “open-minded” people. Loud and Proud The story of this longestablished franchise dates back to 1972 with the opening of the first Hamburger Mary's in San Francisco. It began as an eclectic late-night beer and burger joint and quickly became a go-to hangout for the LGBT community. Forty years and 11 locations later, Hamburger Mary's has gained a reputation as a come-one-come-all hotspot, and a chain that actively markets itself to the LGBT community. The St. Louis location, which was spearheaded by a group of partners led by Mark Erney, is the second to open in Missouri. After a show-stopping soft opening with a VIP guest list of creatives and politicos alike, Hamburger Mary's has been buzzing ever since—and not just among the LGBT community.
Head up to the second floor to find a sports-barmeets-rec-room with large TVs and a lively area overlooking the main floor. Or, snag the “Sweet Charity” table (seats eight to 10) in front, where 70 percent of all food sales go to the highlighted charity of the month. Burger Bliss The menu is just as wonderfully wacky—with a mix of appetizers like “Hot Wangs & Thangs,” a generous selection of burgers and sandwiches, and a dessert menu that includes fried Twinkies. Among the burgers, a popular favorite is the classic Mary Burger, a half-pound charbroiled 22 ALIVE STL MARCH 2012
selection served with your choice of sweet-potato fries, onion rings, soup or salad. Other takes on the classic include the Queen Mary burger, loaded with cheddar cheese, grilled onions and bacon, and the Big Kahuna with bacon, grilled pineapple and cheese. The Spicy Mary burger is no joke—with a fiery blend of hot sauce, jalapeños and melted jack cheese. Wrap options include turkey, bacon and avocado on multigrain and a chipotle chicken wrap with black beans and ranch. Don't leave without trying one of the Mary-tinis or Special-teases— delectable drinks that live up to their array of cutesy names like the Sweet Buns, with Smirnoff Fluffed Marshmallow vodka, or the Scarlet O'Hara, with Southern Comfort and cranberry.
where to go
Alice Meets Wonderland It's hard to label just what Hamburger Mary's is—maybe because it's not just a restaurant—it's a flamboyant dinerthemed eatery with a stage and grand piano. The space is open with lots of personality and colorful diner décor. The half-pound burgers are a definite draw, but so is the multi-level bar, VIP lounge, stage, outdoor patio and nightly entertainment lineups. After your chili burger and tater tots, you can join a game of bingo, belt a few tunes during karaoke night or watch a drag show.

Mad Scientist Oddball cocktail ingredients make one delicious experiment. By Matt Sorrell | Photo by Jules Brown
M&W Sanctuaria, The Grove In this drink: tequila, rye whiskey, lemon juice, cinnamon syrup and chipotle paste. The result of a collaboration between bar manager Matt Seiter and chef Wil Pelly (hence the M and W), this concoction uses chipotle paste to bring a bit of smoky heat.
24 ALIVE STL MARCH 2012
> Cocktails have always provided a creative outlet for wild imaginations. Many classic libations begin with curious bartenders who pick up a bottle of this and a bottle of that and wonder what would happen if the contents were combined. But, these mad scientist experiments aren’t limited to mysterious spirits found in the dusty recesses of the back bar. Many mixologists take a cue from the kitchen and incorporate unlikely culinary ingredients into their drinks to create unique tastes. Some of these items might seem odd to combine with alcohol, but the results speak for themselves. If you need further convincing, look no further than these three cocktails from local watering holes. They contain ingredients that, at first glance, might not seem all that intuitive to include in a drink, but make all the difference in the final tipple.
Bacon and Egg Fizz Eclipse Restaurant, The Loop In this drink: bacon-infused bourbon, egg white, lemon, maple syrup and creme de cassis. Like breakfast in a glass, this concoction uses good old-fashioned maple syrup as the sweet component to balance the lemon and the meaty bourbon infusion.
Ab-Duck-Tion Taste, Central West End In this drink: duck-fat-infused Grand Marnier, Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur, lemon, mascarpone, pepper, lavender bitters and absinthe. The duckfat Grand Marnier commands attention in this drink by Travis Garner, but it’s the mascarpone that caught our eye. The Italian cheese creates a creamy texture and balances out the ultra-rich infusion.

Bill Donius
“Thought Revolution” STL’s Bill Donius on the recent release of his first book. By Gwen Ragno | Photo by wesley law
> Bill Donius isn't the first to recognize the largely untapped creative potential of the brain's right hemisphere (Roger Sperry won a Nobel Prize for that discovery in 1981). Nor is he the first to publish a book about tapping into that creativity—(“Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” by Betty Edwards has been required reading in art classes since its 1979 release). What Donius has done is to make the concept useful for the mainstream, not just scientists and artists. A self-help book in the truest sense, “Thought Revolution: How to Unlock Your Inner Genius” shows readers how to ask their own brains for solutions to their problems. The process is so simple that it tricks our logical left hemispheres into cooperating. Write From the Right The methodology behind “Thought Revolution” involves tapping into right-brain creativity simply by writing with your non-dominant hand. Activating the right hemisphere is particularly helpful when you're dealing with a struggle or a mental block of some kind. “We get ingrained in our thought 28 ALIVE STL MARCH 2012
processes, and sometimes it's hard to take a different path,” Donius says. The beauty is that it's your own brain telling you how to break the pattern, not someone else. The book describes the process through eight case studies on people who Donius has worked with personally. He shares the issues each of them were working through—from losing weight to marital problems to not succeeding at work—and describes how the process showed them what lies they were telling themselves and what they could do about it. Book and beyond Donius has been holding right-brain writing sessions with individuals and small groups for a few years now, and he has been amazed by the transformational experiences he's witnessed. The decision to write a book about them came from a series of right-brain exercises of his own, a process Donius says is a journey, not a one-time revelation. “One session with me isn’t enough,” he says. “The book gives a protocol to change your life.” Because the process is so hands-on and visual, there is already a production company talking with Donius about the possibility of picking up the concept for a reality series or talk show. The show would follow someone through the process, showing their writings and drawings as they make meaningful changes in their lives.
> Attend the March 21 book signing and discussion at the St. Louis Public Library Schlafly Branch (225 N. Euclid Ave., 314.367.4120).
Bar Manager Matt Seiter is immortalizing Sanctuaria’s cocktail club and menu of 150 masterfully mixed cocktails in a book titled “The Stick.” Not your typical cocktail book list of recipes, “The Stick” does it all in the context of the cocktail club and the unique interaction between its members and mixologists. The book paints a picture of the Sanctuaria scene and describes the origins and culture of the cocktail club, including photos from events like Cocktails By Candlelight, before launching into a drinkby-drink tour of the menu. For the first 80 cocktails, “The Classics,” Seiter gives a recipe for the Sanctuaria version and points to other books where readers can find the recipe it was based on. Cocktails 81-150 are Santuaria originals, so he shares the story behind each one’s creation. In a “Home Cooking” chapter, Seiter even describes how to craft some of the house-made syrups, tinctures and bitters Sanctuaria uses behind the bar. Seiter isn’t too worried about giving his secrets away, he says, because “we share information across the bar all the time—why not do it across the nation?” The book will be available first at Sanctuaria, so keep an eye on sanctuariastl.com to find out when you can get your hands on it.

Do You (e)Read Me? Why modern bookworms read from a screen. By Jen Rieger and Chris Rubin De La Borbolla | illustration by sarah quatrano
> Unless you've been living under a piece of parchment, you've probably heard of a little device called an eReader. After all, eReader sales in the US have more than quadrupled in the last two years (according to eMarketer)—and in 2012, it's predicted that 28.4 million (12 percent) of adult Americans will have an eReader or similar device. The two most popular models are currently the Nook from Barnes and Noble and the Kindle from Amazon. Even a technophobe is likely aware of these devices, but many people don't realize the range of capabilities, options and price points that are available. And, we're willing to bet there's one out there ideally suited to you. Aside from joining the 21st century, a huge advantage of eReaders is the fact that they're lightweight and highly portable. They also have the ability to underline, annotate or add notes to books, PDFs and other documents. You can connect to the web via 3G or wirelessly (depending on the device you choose). Plus, they're very versatile—you can take them anywhere and even read in bright sunlight (with most models). And, who can ignore the price point? Depending on your selection, the Kindle has seven varieties that range from $79 to $379, and the Nook has three devices priced from $139 to $249. Kindles range from the original model (sans color and touch screen) to the latest and greatest, the new Kindle Fire—with a full-color touch screen, streaming video, web browsing, access to books, magazines, newspapers and videos, the ability to lend books and much more. The Nook has a simple black and white version and ramps up to the Nook Tablet—with similar features to the Kindle Fire. If you opt for the higher-end models of these devices, you can also install and enjoy many great apps. So, which one should you buy? We could spend hours debating—but really, the bottom line for many is to ask yourself, “Am I an Amazon power user?” If you purchase from Amazon on a weekly basis, have multiple wish lists and use Amazon as your homepage, then the Kindle is for you. If not, we recommend spending some time with each device either on the website or, better yet, in person. Hands-on, you can't go wrong. Assuming you go all out and opt for the Kindle Fire, the Nook Color or Nook Tablet, you can run thousands of great Android-based apps. Just like apps for your smartphone, they can really customize and expand the features of your eReader—so much so, that we couldn't help but “bookmark” these four exciting apps (for eReaders and smartphones alike) for the e-reading-inclined. 30 ALIVE STL MARCH 2012
Wanna Get Social? Try Goodreads. Did you ever wish you could combine your love of reading with social networking? Snap! Enter the Goodreads app. Goodreads is a large social network of people who love to read. The app currently boasts more than 5 million readers and 8 million book titles. You can create a personal profile, follow other people, find book recommendations from friends and other readers, check user updates and read friend and community reviews of any book, as well as write your own. Indie Spirit? Try IndieBound. We love shopping at our local bookstores, as well as supporting indie pubs in general. Trouble is, many of these may not be available directly on your eReader. That's what the IndieBound reader offers. Independent bookstores have partnered with Google to sell Google eBooks and make them available as ePublications. News Junkie? Feel the Pulse. We can't say enough about how much we love the Pulse app—it rocks! Pulse allows you to keep up on the latest news, blogs and seemingly endless stream of online posts. You can easily customize, sort and browse the news you choose—whether it's a local blog or a national news feed. You can also share news with others via Facebook, email or Twitter. Playing reporter has never been easier, or more fun! Wanna Get Smart? Heed these final words. Everyone needs a little fun. Since we're focusing on reading-related apps, we can't help but point out that both devices allow you to play Words With Friends. This wildly popular and highly addictive game based on Scrabble allows you to play asynchronous games with other friends. chicGeek The chicGeek blog is brought to you by Jen Rieger and Chris Rubin De La Borbolla at 963Collective, a boutique agency offering uniquely crafted digital media, websites and smart design, with the goal of bringing all things tech-sexy to the digitally minded reader. alivemag.com

> She calls Ashton Kutcher and Karlie Kloss friends—and spends much of her year on a Fashion Week world tour of NYC, Paris, Milan and beyond. Such is the reality of STL-based international model manager/scout, Mary Clarke, who founded a highly successful biz with her husband, Jeff, in the unlikely Midwest. Call it a Heartland pipe dream come true. Interview by Jennifer Dulin Wiley | Photo by Attilio D’Agostino
Mary Clarke, 50 Founder, Mother Model Management How She Got Into the Biz. It began as a hobby back in Iowa—doing local fashion and hair shows—and eventually working at a local agency. From there, I began my own business and eventually held scouting events in Iowa, where agents flew in from around the world. We quickly became 32 ALIVE STL MARCH 2012
known for having an eye, which is an invaluable commodity in the fashion world. Education/Training. I’m self-taught, a good listener, constant observer, lifelong learner, avid reader and bold dreamer. Best Work Day Ever. I was just about to throw in the towel in February 1997, realizing the absurdity of what I was attempting to do and where I was doing it. By that July, I was in NYC with my new find, Chris “Ashton” Kutcher. I was bombarded with agents wanting to represent him, and we attended the Calvin Klein show. He was wearing what we affectionately called “Salvation Armani” (the entire look was under $25), and I was in a black department store dress and Payless shoes. We kept glancing at each other in disbelief of where we were and how two against-the-odds dreamers from Iowa ended up in that room. Why Her Job Rocks. We make a living walking out into the world every day expecting to discover a star; we go up to strangers and open a new world to them, and ultimately, we help people make their dreams come true. It doesn’t get much better than that.
Typical Day. Every day is an adventure. During show season, we travel with the models and go to castings, fittings and shows. During the off-season, we scout at music festivals, fairs, concerts, malls, camps, sporting events, dance competitions and campuses, searching for a needle in a haystack, a diamond in the rough. Proudest Moment. Every “first” we get to experience: the first time we saw Kutcher on TV and on the big screen; Karlie Kloss’ first Calvin Klein exclusive; her first walk in the Victoria’s Secret show; Ryan Mertz’ first Calvin Klein exclusive; Katie Fogarty’s first Prada exclusive; Lindsay Lullman’s first fashion week; every model’s first show, first editorial, first campaign, first cover...the joy we feel celebrating with them is immeasurable. Goals for the Future. Helping our models achieve beyond their dreams, a bigger platform and voice for Mother, an annual benefit fashion show in St. Louis, a New York Times bestseller (or two), speaking and scouting tours where we can inspire young women and change their understanding of true beauty, and a highly regarded TV docu-series. Bleach Job Designers threatened a clean sweep for spring—turning out an abundance of pieces in sleek, bright white. By Jill Manoff | Photo by Carmen Troesser > White is making noise this spring, and it's music to the ears of every shopper in need of a break from the somber top-notes of numerous collections past. Seen bleaching out such extras as handbags, heels and high-fashion sunnies, the color succeeded in stealing the show that played out on many a recent runway. At Stella McCartney, a flower-embossed clutched bag with a chain that referenced the classic Chanel 2.55 contributed to a fresh feel; at Alexander Wang, a pointed-toe pump made for a mood of futurism. Altogether, the season's effortlessly prominent accessories communicated a powerful message: In a world accustomed to “heavy-metal” antics and “more, more, more,” remaining classically clean is a surefire way to get noticed.

The Clash Designers are causing a visual ruckus—braving bold, new combos of energetic brights and busy prints. By Jill Manoff | Photo by Carmen Troesser > If you have long avoided color, get set to squirm— or face your fear. From the looks of spring runways, anything and everything goes this season. Megacolor is on the menu, thanks to such unforgettable looks as Jason Wu's gleaming red carpet gowns and Bottega Veneta's street-slanted cocktail wear. Getting graphic is also strongly encouraged—especially when it means mashing explosive prints in the signature style of Mary Katrantzou. Both ideas translate from ready-to-wear to accessories, and are at their hottest when worn together—in a borderline-chaotic style that leaves little room for error, or basic black.

Waist Land Acing menswear’s dominant trend is a cinch—just belt it out. By Jill Manoff | Photo by Carmen Troesser
> You can't deny it: On a style spectrum that spans from “Greasers” (wearers of denim, black and basic tees) to “Socs,” you're at the latter end, which permits pastels, khakis and cardigans. Lucky for you, designers are overwhelmingly on your side this season—encouraging those who have long rebelled against trends to befriend color—and, giving the green light to fashion insiders like yourself to stay in gold (and red and green and blue). This spring, regardless of your taste, opt to meet the menswear authorities in the middle by settling with a vibrant belt that pairs just as well with Levis as it does with salmon-colored Dockers. Among our favorites are Smathers & Branson's needlepoint numbers—which will prove perfect when you can't figure out which cincher pairs best with your new rainbow-bright Topsiders. Oh, preppy boy problems…

Red Fitness Lounge
High Class Fitness The new Red Fitness Lounge raises the bar of the standard workout. By Ettie Berneking | Photo by Virginia Harold
> Nothing about Red Fitness Lounge screams “gym.” Deep-red walls, black crystal chandeliers and glass-topped cocktail tables fitted with martini-glass candles make this newly opened Clayton fitness center feel more like a highbrow nightlife spot than an exclusive workout facility. Not Your Average Gym It might sound too frilly for an iron-pumping gym, but one look at owner and designer Jamie Mushlin, and all doubts subside. Mushlin didn't want to open a gym that looked or felt like another YMCA. Instead, he decided to create a gym and dress it up as a cocktail lounge. It might be unorthodox, but Mushlin has a 44 ALIVE STL MARCH 2012
very specific clientele in mind. Red Fitness Lounge caters to busy professionals who spend most of their time traveling and don't have time for the hassle of a regular gym—as well as those who are simply wary of the idea of “face time” and all the bells and whistles associated with more traditional gyms. With this targeted customer in mind, Mushlin built a workout facility with as little equipment as possible to show clients that they can get a full workout without the hassle of complicated machines—or the lines that often come with them. Workout with Wherewithal With just a few 10-pound dumbbells, Mushlin can create an individualized fitness routine that requires minimal gym time. This fitness buff has spent 25 years in the business; he's opened other gyms and trained business professionals, pro sports players and celebrities. As a result, he knows how to individualize each workout regimen for ultimate results. That's why there's only one cardio machine in the whole building. It's a concept that works to Mushlin's advantage, since Red Fitness Lounge is just 1,500 square feet. Privacy was a major factor in the fitness lounge concept. After all, who doesn't hate schlepping
around the gym in last year's ratty sweats only to run into your boss or a client? Here, gym-goers cannot simply show up—appointments must be made with one of the four independent trainers. Mushlin doesn't want clients working out by themselves, though. “We train together,” he says. If normal metal dumbbells are rough on clients' hands, Mushlin directs them to the easy-grip rack. If a client wants a workout using only a jump rope, he creates a cardio routine with plenty of doubledutch included. And, once the sweat has been wiped from their brows, clients can take a breather at the front lounge and enjoy a drink—swapping gin or vodka for vitamin B and antioxidants with the selection of vitamin shakes and antioxidantrich beverages available. The Verdict Those who have experienced “the other side” argue that it's quite possibly the perfect way to work out. No machines to wipe down, no questionable locker rooms in which to avoid eye contact—just a comfy chair, a tasty drink and a great workout routine that can be easily repeated on the next business trip. alivemag.com

Recently Ringed Three St. Louis couples share their engagement stories.
Elizabeth Smith, 28 & timothy Linck, 29
How We Met We were so different when we first met each other: I hated the Church, and she loved Jesus. I rapped and loved hip-hop, she played the guitar and sang worship. But then, something happened. I surrendered to Jesus and started building a relationship with God. I met Danielle again, and we started seeing that we weren't so different after all. I thought she was hot, and she thought I was cute. I loved her voice, and she loved my rhymes. I knew God's love, and she knew God's power. Most importantly, I knew how to make lemonade, and she loved lemonade; I loved dancing, and she loved it when I danced. I started to like her (a lot), and she started to like me (a lot). God told me that she was the one, and He told her the same thing.
How we met Tim says the first time he laid eyes on me, he knew I was the one. It was at Companion Café in Clayton on a warm fall day. I was just joining the Companion family, and we were gathered for a management team meeting. I don't really remember that day, but he has reminded me. We worked together for months and became friendly, but we were always more than just friends in Tim's eyes. In October 2007, he asked if I'd be his date to a friend's wedding. I didn't know that it was the last first date I would ever go on.
The Proposal Darren proposed to me on Aug. 23, 2011 at the park where we had our first date. He was incredibly nervous! He made me sit down and watch a romantic video he had made about us on iMovie. At the end of the video, the words, “This is the part where you look at me,” ran across the screen. I looked at him, and he froze. Then he said, “This is the part where I am going to ask you to marry me!” It was amazing and so cute. I said “yes!” He got down on one knee, but when he went to put the ring on my finger, he freaked out because it didn't fit. Turns out, it was the wrong hand! We went to our best friends' house, and they had baked us a heart-shaped cake to celebrate. The Big Day August 2012 at Lafayette Square Park.
The Proposal We were in Ottertail, MN, which is a very special place to me. I have many fond memories of spending my summers on the lake there, and when my mother passed away, we planted a special tree overlooking the lake with her ashes at the roots. That Sunday was Tim's 29th birthday, and it was a lovely, sunny afternoon. After I gave Tim his birthday present, he said he had something for me, too. As the two of us crossed the street, Tim held my hand, and we shared a quiet but intense moment. Then, he brought out the ring and told me that the best birthday present that I could give him would be to agree to marry him. He told me that I made him the happiest he had ever been, and he wanted to make a promise of forever. I was overcome with emotion and shed tears of joy as I said “yes.” My engagement ring started as Tim's grandmother's gold wedding band, and was then inlaid with diamonds, my birthstone and a brilliant-cut center diamond. The Big Day October 20, 2012 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church and reception at Hendri's Banquets & Catering.
Tiffany KaltenBach, 33 & David Unger, 32 How we met Dave and I first met in high school, and I never thought in a million years that over a decade later we would be tying the knot. We were great friends who loved dancing at festivals and traveling all across the country to see our favorite band, The Allman Brothers. As we got a little older, our trips with friends were less frequent because everyone was getting married, having babies and embarking on adulthood. We would see each other randomly, but that was it. In March 2009, we met up to plan a much-needed trip to Chicago for a concert. After a night of planning and reminiscing, all of our friends left while Dave and I continued chatting. We were both single, and the spark was there—the rest is history. We spent that trip together in Chicago as a couple, dancing the night away. The Proposal I sensed that a proposal was coming, but each weekend I was left a little disappointed. I had repeatedly told him that I didn't care how we got engaged and that I would be happy with a charm bracelet. One Saturday afternoon, he came home and presented me with a beaded bracelet that his 10-year-old niece, Mia, had made. I laughed and responded, “very funny.” Then, he dropped to one knee and pulled my grandmother's 60-year-old emerald-cut engagement ring from his pocket. He told me that it would be the biggest mistake of his life if he didn't make me his wife, and popped the question. It means the world to me to have my grandmother’s diamond, and I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with the most caring, kind man on the planet. I haven't taken the ring or my sweet charm bracelet off since! The Big Day June 9, 2012 in Dave's parents' backyard.

M-I-Z…I-Love-U A St. Louis couple brings their alma mater to the Coronado for an unforgettable wedding. By Kate Allen | Photos by Jon Koch
>The story of Elma Hadziselimovic and Garry Garrison can be described as nothing less than fate. Unbeknownst to them, the couple had woven their way in and out of one another’s lives since 1998. Both undergraduate students at The University of Missouri-Columbia, they must have brushed shoulders a million times, but it wasn’t until one evening after college in 2005 that they first locked eyes. 48 ALIVE STL MARCH 2012
Both working in the pharmaceutical industry, Elma and Garry happened to be out entertaining clients at Annie Gunn's on the same night and were introduced. This could have been the end of their story, but Cupid had other plans and brought the couple face-to-face again just a few days later. Fast forward to the winter of 2010, and Elma and Garry were planning a romantic getaway to Mexico. Convinced that Garry would pop the question while south of the border, Elma made no mystery of her suspicions, which is why Garry
knew he had to throw her off. During one of their favorite “date night” activities, dinner and a movie at the Chase Park Plaza, Garry asked a friendly concierge to take a photo of them in front of a stunning Christmas tree. Just as the concierge raised the camera, Garry dropped to one knee and proposed to Elma in her native Bosnian language—and the rest, they would say, is istorija. Golden Glow The first time Elma and Garry visited the Coronado, they knew it would be the perfect place to host their nondenominational ceremony while maintaining alivemag.com
the romance and intimacy they were looking for in a location. Pillar candles and yellow rose petals lined the aisle as guests flowed into the Coronado's Bradshaw Room. As Elma anxiously awaited her grand entrance, two sets of ring bearers and flowers girls preceded her, the first carrying the traditional flowers and ring pillow and the second carrying mini Bosnian and American flags. Following a lighthearted reading, “The Prescription for Marriage,” written by a good friend of the groom and playing off of the couple's professions, Elma and Garry exchanged rings and their first married kiss. School Spirit After the ceremony, guests were treated to a cocktail hour, complete with a yellow vodka martini, affectionately named the “Love Spark.” In an effort to pay homage to their time at Mizzou, Elma and Garry opted for rich gold tones and black accents in the alivemag.com
ballroom, styled by Yara Holt of Plume Events. As the cocktail hour came to a close, guests took their seats for dinner, which ended with a special treat—Bosnian Baklava, homemade by the bride's grandmother and aunt, in addition to traditional wedding cake. Cultural Cadence At a young age, the bride and her family left their native Bosnia, but the country and its traditions have never left them. In addition to the delicious desserts, the Hadziselimovics taught their guests to dance the Bosnian Kolo, and Elma and her father shared a very special dance to a Bosnian favorite, “Sarajevo, Ljubavi Moja” (“Sarajevo, My Love”) written for the country's capital city. Each of the couple's dinner tables was named for a city where the bride had lived during her many moves, in addition to cities Elma and Garry had traveled to together. Following a delayed honeymoon in May
2012, Elma and Garry will be able to add Italy and Croatia to their ever-growing list. Gifts from the Heart Prior to their trip down the aisle, Elma and Garry each presented their future mothers-in-law with embroidered handkerchiefs. Garry presented Elma's mother with a heartfelt note thanking her for being the woman that she is, and for all of the sacrifices she has made for Elma over the years. Elma thanked Garry's mom for raising the man of her dreams; both women were moved to tears. But, perhaps the most sentimental exchange of gifts was between the bride and groom. At the end of the day, they both removed their wedding bands for the first time to read the custom inscriptions chosen by their other half. The evening came to a tearful close as the couple discovered they had chosen the exact same inscription, “My Love, My Best Friend.” MARCH 2012 ALIVE STL 49

Get Involved: Growing Community Put your green thumb to work and improve your habitat this spring. By Samantha Taylor
> Spring cleaning takes on a whole new meaning, thanks to these two local organizations that give the green light for people to clean up and beautify their neighborhoods. The best part? There are plenty of ways for you to get involved this time of year. Dig In Gateway Greening was founded in 1984 as a volunteer program to help educate at-risk youth and improve lives in inner-city neighborhoods. Its gardens help provide affordable, fresh foods to residents, while turning vacant lots into tools to educate and beautify. Gateway Greening has since introduced several more volunteer programs, including the City Seeds Urban Farm, which offers job training in green horticulture for veterans and horticulture therapy for people overcoming homelessness, mental illness and prison release. The Community Garden program serves to unite a community by bringing its residents together to 52 ALIVE STL MARCH 2012
create and maintain gardens or greening projects to better their neighborhood. Gateway Greening supports more than 200 community gardens around the city by providing supplies, tools and training. Bell Demonstration Garden in Grand Center was a series of 22 vacant lots before Gateway purchased the land in 2001. A living example of what volunteers and hard work can accomplish, the garden now supplies over 8,000 pounds of fresh food to Food Outreach and other local shelters and pantries each year.
Brightside also supports more than 600 community gardens around the city by providing flowers, shrubs and grass, as well as a wealth of knowledge about sustainable landscaping practices. Last summer, the organization partnered with volunteer Marines to build and plant a demonstration garden and learning center near their headquarters in the Shaw neighborhood. This summer, it plans to expand the garden with the help of a grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
Gateway Greening is always looking for volunteers to join and lend a hand in existing community gardens, and it encourages the most ambitious to start community gardens in their own neighborhoods. Aspiring gardeners can fill out an application for a small grant to help with start-up costs, and receive expert advice on how to begin a successful garden. Gateway believes that three things are necessary for a successful garden: committed gardeners, established meeting times and work days, and identification of garden resources.
The main focus of Brightside is beautifying community areas, like parks, medians, entrances to neighborhoods and the grounds of schools and churches. Executive Director Mary Lou Green believes that participating in community greening efforts like these helps strengthen residents’ ties to the neighborhood, and encourages them to make it a nicer place to live. The organization distributed more than 300,000 flowers around St. Louis last year and doesn't plan on slowing down any time soon.
Flower Power Operation Brightside is one of the area’s oldest nonprofit cleanup and greening organizations, and it's easy to see why. To celebrate 30 years of service, the group is taking on a new name, Brightside St. Louis, and plans to plant half a million daffodils around the city this spring. Brightside provides St. Louis with beautification and greening programs like Graffiti Eradication, Flowers for Downtown and Project Blitz, a twoweek-long citywide cleanup effort each spring.
Branch Out Getting involved in your community has never been easier or more rewarding. Volunteer on your own, or as part of a group—in your own neighborhood or away from home. Along with the sense of having created something beautiful and useful, you’ll likely go home with a few new friends—and perhaps even some fresh vegetables.

Social Scene: Go Red for Women Luncheon February 3 ∑ It was a sea of red and Louis Vuitton handbags at this year’s annual Go Red For Women Luncheon. Nearly 700 women gathered in the Ritz Carlton ballroom to learn more about the prevention of heart disease and raise money for the American Heart Association’s fight against what has become the leading cause of death among women in the United States. The ballroom glittered with red lights and sequin dresses as guests settled in for a delicious lunch and listened to inspirational survivor stories. Photos by Virginia Harold/ALIVE Scene Team. A peek into the jet-set life of fashion's most popular gent, STL-bred Derek Blasberg.

It was mid-September of 2009 and the close of my first face-to-face encounter with Derek Blasberg. He'd signed off to report to his customary VIP seat—this time, at the runway showing of the Michael Kors Spring 2010 collection. Among the many more “regular” people who had piled into the Bryant Park tent, I was hip to the young insider's reputation for reporting fashion news before such esteemed sources as Women's Wear Daily and The New York Times—and so had a hunch his abbreviated report of the spandex-peppered, cutout-heavy lineup that later played out would come through my Twitter feed about as fast as I could take it in. Confirmed. Even before the lights dimmed, he was tapping on his Blackberry—setting the scene, heralding the spot as hot. “Whoa! Fabien Baron and Mario Testino are—no joke—having a front-row dance-off.” It was the sort of fly-on-the-wall banter for which I had known him—and that continues to fuel his star status among most everyone with a Style.com app. Routinely recounting (@derekblasberg, which counts 70,000+ followers) such surreal outings as a private party at the home of temperamental supermodel Naomi Campbell or dinner alongside fashion's Great Scot, Christopher Kane, Blasberg seems to possess an all-access pass to the beautiful people and every place they
Boy Next Door Locally, the invites were sent by well-known arts patron Susan Sherman. A fan of Moda Operandi, she made time before guest arrivals to catch up and inquire about the connection to his fellow guest of honor. “Lauren is, like, my best girlfriend in New York,” Blasberg answered, while perched on a kitchen stool in Sherman's Clayton estate. “You have a lot of those,” she rolled her eyes. “You had four other girls with you the last time you were here.” He remembered
sip cocktails. While his current posts as editorat-large for Harper's Bazaar and senior editor at VMAN and V Magazine likely permit many an “in,” it's safe to say he's welcome regardless.
that an “amused” Chloe Sevigny was among them. Defined by Steak 'n Shake, Ted Drewes and Value Village thrift store, Blasberg's STL stomping grounds would likely amuse much of his prepschooled circle—a theory that, no doubt, plays into his enthusiastic Midwest pride. Always one to entertain, he's been known to post family videos on YouTube (including one of his Aunt Mary twirling a baton at the family's Lake of the Ozarks vacation home), and whips out “y'all” whenever within hours of his uncle's Hillsboro farm. If he's not rep'ing his roots by way of a Cougars tee or a Cardinals Halloween costume, there's a good chance he's working a suit, and powermingling—which, he admits, is not always the glamorous experience he's known for portraying. In fact, his less favorable observations—of young women's rampant irreverence for themselves, specifically—are what motivated “Very Classy” and its predecessor. Though mentioned by name just once, Snooki was a repeated topic of our conversation, which was centered on a clear message. If Blasberg has his say, girls will put p's and q's over GTL—and will decide that keeping up with current events is more important than “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” They'll ponder before going out in a mini, sans panties, and they'll listen to the beau that resides on their right shoulder, versus Lindsay Lohan on the left.
New York Minutes As he's a contributor to a growing number of books, literary projects and publications, spying a Blasberg byline these days is about as common as hearing an editor hype florals for spring. His “party pics”driven “Fast & Louche” column in Interview is among the many regular assignments for which he somehow makes deadline. “I think, in New York, you can't help but get caught up in that excitement of doing, doing, doing,” he says. “But, that's why I like to come home so much.” His mother, Carol Blasberg, echoed this sentiment while making the rounds at Sherman's impressivelyattended St. Louis soiree. “New York is a whirlwind, so he comes to St. Louis to relax,” she says. “He's always working; I think we're enjoying an Elton John concert, and he's taking notes on who's there.” Obviously driven by the rule, “Don't rest on your laurels” (a phrase he quoted, twice), Blasberg's career is ever-evolving, and it's proof that hard work pays off. Take his road to TV—marked by several video snippets for Harper's Bazaar, Louis Vuitton and Michael Kors. Together, they paved the way for his fresh appointment as a judge on Lifetime's “24 Hour Catwalk.” A bright spot on the Alexa Chung-hosted series, the sockless third chair can be counted on to deliver a witty review of each featured contestant's hurried designs (he labeled one model's Native American-inspired look “Poca-hot-mess”). Still, Blasberg has no plan to be TV's next fashion doyen, or—despite his new blog, “Mr. Blasberg”—the web's most-clicked style source. Really, other than completing his inthe-works third book that's “more technical” than its predecessors (“I don't want to jinx it,” he said, before changing the subject), he has few plans at all. “That's the thing about fashion—it's cyclical; it changes every six months by its nature. It can be, ‘Spandex is so out right now.’ And then, in two seasons, everyone could be wearing spandex. So, I don't have a master plan; I don't know what's next,” he shrugs. “And, that's sort of exciting.”
the Classy Fashion Insider An industry veteran at just 29 years old, Blasberg launched his fashion career in 2000 upon graduating from Affton High School at the top of his class, and hightailing it to NYU. “During college, I worked at Elite Model Management, then I did PR at David Yurman—and I finally got a job at W, working part-time,” Blasberg recalls. “My first full-time job, right out of college, was working at Vogue.” It was there that, true to form, he made friends with editor Lauren Santo Domingo, who, at the time of our interview, was joining him in St. Louis as the official co-host of their joint nationwide tour. Meant to hype both Blasberg's new paperback, “Very Classy: Even More Exceptional Advice for the Extremely Modern Lady,” and Santo Domingo's foray into luxury ecommerce, Moda Operandi, the junket made stops in ritzy hotels and the living rooms of wealthy socialites from New York to LA. “The tour is just as big,” Blasberg insists, regarding his dramatic move from sitting in bookstores to plug 2010's “Classy,” his New York Times bestseller, to partyhopping in celebration of its sequel. “I just made it so I didn't have to feel like a pig at a state fair.” alivemag.com

Epic Pale A drastic departure from their high-contrast pairings and psychedelic prints for fall, designers decided to go pastel for spring—offering up countless servings of sorbet-hued separates and Easter-perfect frocks in subtle pink, purple and mint. Among the many who embraced the light this season were Philip Lim, whose color-blocked offerings begged references to Neapolitan ice cream, and Calvin Klein, whose melt-worthy slipdresses were clear standouts among the season's many palette cleansers. Confections, you have our attention. march 2012 ALIVE STL 69

Garden Party This season, everything is coming up roses (and daffodils, daisies and lilacs) as designers reveal a shared mindset that seems stemmed from flowery fields. Together, their shows read like a garden party, with a number of head-to-toe prints proclaiming “the more, the merrier”—and, at last, the return of flower power. Among the most memorable pieces plucked from designers' garden varieties were a playful pinafore at Christopher Kane, combat-boots-turnedflower-pots at Ashish and a rose-embellished skirt at Prada that oh-so-perfectly read like icing on a cake.

Although typically reserved for lingerie, wedding gowns and lingerie-as-wedding-gown styles (think Madonna performing “Like a Virgin”), lace is having a major moment in ready-to-wear. In fact, Chantilly has never been so chic. Woven into an overwhelming number of collections by way of sheer evening gowns (at Erdem and Badgley Mischka) and delicate day dresses (at Louis Vuitton), the holey look is hot for any occasion—and is surprisingly easy to wear. Simply pick up a prim skirt with dainty mesh trim, or think “doily” when deciding on your next statement dress—and be prepared to hit the lingerie department. Regardless of what the pop stars are doing, you'll want to wear panties.

Twin Peaks
Hailed a comeback in fall, once dormant double-breasted jackets saturated the spring runways like never before. Apparently sold on the fact that the style can skew as informal as any, influential designers from New York to Milan introduced an abundance of blazers with rows of parallel buttons—for work and play, and in new proportions. The most lightweight and comfortable of all options (to those who fear change, anyway) were part of suits by Band of Outsiders and Salvatore Ferragamo. But, then there was Corneliani's bright white rendition, which should definitely be reserved for those ready to handle a double-take.

General Idea Spring 2012
Black Light Special When it comes to what to wear this spring, man up and don't shy away from color—because among designers' brightest ideas for the season are neon takes on your go-to staples. At Gant by Michael Bastian, the trend played out by way of a fluorescent polo and a plaid DayGlo blazer—shown paired together, which made for a bold, preppy look not likened since the '80s. On the same page were Louis Vuitton's electric scarves and Marc by Marc Jacobs' candy-colored suits (shown in green, orange and hot pink), both of which teetered between appropriate dress for a country club and a rave. It seems, this season, it's go loud or go home.

10 STL beauty procedures you need to know about. By Ettie Berneking
For years, getting cosmetic surgery meant going under the knife, but some of the newest and hottest beauty procedures are sneaking out of Hollywood and showing up in doctors' offices and med spas around St. Louis. These minimally invasive procedures will not only have you looking younger and more rejuvenated, but they also require little to no recovery time—making it even easier for the newand-improved you to get out and strut your stuff.

Smize
Eyes by Thermage uses radiofrequencies and doses of intense heat to tighten the skin around the eyes, decreasing wrinkles without any surgery or injections. The heat helps stimulate collagen production while tightening existing collagen (Padda Institute; 12401 Olive Blvd., Ste. 100, Creve Coeur, 314.275.7300). $$$$
Slim Fast
VelaShape is a non-surgical medical device that helps get rid of those extra curves and reduce cellulite. Using elos technology, this procedure eliminates unwanted fatty tissue by heating the area. Skin is then smoothed and reshaped using a vacuum and tissue manipulation to reveal a tighter figure (The Lifestyle Center, 7642 Forsyth, Clayton, 314.863.5556). $$

Time Travel
Non-surgical liquid face-lifts use FDAapproved injections of fillers and Botox to restore volume, smooth out wrinkles and give you a more youthful appearance with no scars. The results of this outpatient procedure are dramatic and long-lasting, with minimal recovery times when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon (Dr. Judith Gurley Plastic Surgery, 14825 N. Outer 40 Rd., Ste. 350, Chesterfield, 636.812.4300). $$$

Be Clear
Using the power of light, Photofacial Skin Rejuvenation penetrates the tissue with a laser and is absorbed by the melanin within the skin, which triggers collagen production, reduces age and sun spots, as well as the redness caused by rosacea (Renew Cosmetic Spa, 7700 Clayton Rd., Ste. 301, Clayton, 314.645.3885). $$
5 6 7
Pucker Up
The most popular method of lip augmentation implants hyaluronic acid (like Juvederm) into the skin. One injection is usually sufficient to produce those plump lips you've always wanted, and has the added benefit of helping eliminate lines and wrinkles around your mouth (BodyAesthetic Plastic Surgery & Skincare Center, 969 N. Mason Rd., Ste. 170, Creve Coeur, 314.628.8200). $$$
Revitalize
DiamondTome Microdermabrasion uses a wand covered with diamond chips to resurface your skin. Fine lines and wrinkles are diminished after removing the topmost layer of skin while stimulating the dermis to improve skin elasticity and overall appearance (Infinity Laser, 141 N. Meramec Ave., Ste. 317, Clayton, 314.862.1000). $
Show Some Leg
You'll never want to hide your legs again after Sclerotherapy. By sealing off abnormal veins from the rest of the vein network in your leg, this procedure eliminates pesky spider veins without any surgery or pain medication needed (Vein Clinics of America, 12400 Olive Blvd., Ste. 203, Creve Coeur, 314.878.2104). $$
8 9
Turn Up the Heat
Fractionated Laser Resurfacing can help rid you of pesky acne scars and wrinkles by providing targeted heat that penetrates the skin's surface. The result is younger, tighter-looking skin (West County Plastic Surgeons of Washington University, 1040 N. Mason Rd., Ste. 124, Creve Coeur, 314.996.8800). $$$
Tighten Up

Doctor's Orders
Your burning beauty procedure questions answered. Whether it's wrinkles or age spots, lips, legs or eyes, finding the beauty procedure that's right for you is no easy task. We talked with skincare guru Dr. Madhavi Kandula to get your most frequently asked beauty procedure questions answered. DHow important is age when considering one of these procedures? Very important. You can be too young or too old. For instance, gel fillers can slow down the appearance of aging, so it's better to start at a younger age, around your mid-30s or so. D What questions should patients ask when looking for a doctor? Who will be doing the procedure? You don't want to go in, meet the doctor and then have the nurse walk in to do the injection. It's also important to ask how often the doctor performs the cosmetic practice you want. If someone is only doing one Botox injection a week, that's not enough. D Are there any complications with non-surgical procedures like these? Bruising is often the biggest one. But, another complication is simply the overuse of fillers. People tend to overdo it and end up with overblown lips. If a procedure like this is done well, no one should be able to notice. D Are there tricks to reducing the amount of downtime? Yes. For injections, apply ice before and after the procedure; this will help constrict blood vessels and minimize bruising and pain. Also, avoid Vitamin E and fish oil. D What's a common concern patients have? They don't want to look like the “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.” They want to look natural. D What's a major misconception about cosmetic surgery? People think Botox or fillers have worked if suddenly they can't frown. That's not what you want. It's like when Nicole Kidman says she's never had work done. Yeah right; her forehead doesn't move! D What's the most common “problem area” for patients? People mostly fix the creases between their eyes or crow's feet. But often, patients focus on one area that bothers them while missing an even more obvious problem area. I always take a picture of them not smiling, and it's worth a thousand words. You see yourself at rest, which can offer a very different perspective. D What new procedures are you in love with? There's a new one called Ultherapy that's fantastic. It tightens skin for men and women by pulling the muscles in the skin. But, it's not for everyone. A good candidate has good skin tone and texture. They can't smoke or tan, and they can't have an abundance of fatty tissue in the face. They also have to be extra patient, since it takes three to six months to get results. Dr. Madhavi Kandula, 845 N. New Ballas Ct., Ste. 310, Creve Coeur, 314.692.0221.

Tricks of the Trade
The Brow Is Back! Guilty of some serious tweezing? Tami Scott, local makeup artist and creator of her own line, Tami Scott Cosmetics, says the first action to take is no action at all. Once you're back to au natural, you can determine where your brows should be with these “Tami Tips:”
1
Rest your makeup brush handle next to the side of your nose, and extend vertically. Find the point where the brush hits the brow bone; this is where your inner eyebrow should start. Then, fill in as needed in a color one shade lighter than your own.
2
Rest the brush handle next to your nose, and extend it towards the outer corner of your eye. Where the brush rests on the brow bone is where your eyebrow line should end. Again, fill in as needed.
3
Big Red
To keep brows meticulously maintained, Scott recommends the brow sculpt duo from her line, which contains a wax and powder (2027 S. 11th St., Soulard, 314.346.8834).
Seen on the runway at Duyos. Bold and sassy, a bright-red lip is best paired with an otherwise neutral palette—and, of course, a winning smile. Get the look: Imperative to this power trend is major color saturation. Invest the time (and extra cash) in a lip color with strong pigment and a stay-put attitude, like Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet in La Fascinante #38 and NARS Red Square Velvet matte lip pencil. For the poutiest pout, Mary Slay, cosmetics and fragrances manager at Saks Fifth Avenue, recommends adding volume by dabbing a bit of high-shine gloss right in the center of your mouth to give the illusion of a fuller lip (Saks Fifth Avenue, Plaza Frontenac, 314.567.9200). Want even more “pow” to your pout? Visit St. Louis Cosmetic Surgery to discuss lip enhancement options, including fat transfers and fillers (17300 N. The Cat's Meow
Seen on the runway at Jakarta Fashion Week. Dramatic and sexy, the dark, sleek look of the modern cat eye reads “bombshell” like no other. Get the look: Local makeup maven Candace Kolios, who's worked with such big name brands as Chanel and Bobbi Brown, suggests starting with a neutral eye shadow and keeping the emphasis on the signature sweep of dark, dramatic liner. Her most important tip—don't skimp on the mascara! Kolios swears by the Chanel INIMITABLE line and finishes the look with Bobbi Brown's gel eyeliner (Candace Kolios: 314.852.0600, mymakeupartistry.com; Bobbi Brown and Chanel cosmetics available at Saks Fifth Avenue, Plaza Frontenac, 314.567.9200).
Center of Attention Seen on the runway at Moisés Nieto. A model's go-to, the minimalistic center part is a great way to showcase a smoky eye or statement lip. Get the look: Phi Trinh, an expert stylist at Dominic Michael Salon, says the center part is all about giving a nod to the classic glam of the '60s and '70s (think Cher and Twiggy in their glory days). To smooth hair and add sheen, Trinh swears by L'Oreal Mythic Oil and also uses the brand's Texture Expert products to add a modern, voluminous element to the classic part style (8220 Forsyth Blvd., Clayton, 314.721.4230).

Local Lines We Love Bee Natural
It's the all-natural ingredients that make this Hanley Fold Farm line of fabulous little lip balms so special. In addition to Shea butter, Vitamin E and olive oil, this lip balm also contains bees wax, an unexpected alternative to standard waxes or petroleum jelly (hanleyfoldfarm.com).
Up and Away
PLant the seed
Blissoma products run the gamut from botanically active skincare to artisan perfumes— all carefully concocted by STL founder Julie Longyear, a purist by nature. The line's all-natural, 100-percent botanical perfumes are a must-have for the astute vegetarian and the socially conscious (iriestar.com; Whole Foods, 1160 Town and Country Crossing Dr., Town and Country, 636.527.1160; Local Harvest Grocery, 3108 Morgan Ford Rd., Tower Grove, 314.865.5260).
Seen on the runway at Honor. Perfect for when you're tight on time, this unstructured up-do works for day and night. Get the look: The key to the unstructured up-do is working with what you have. Embrace your texture— maybe even tease it a tad with a comb, suggests Lee Ann Weeden from GLAM. The unconstructed look is best achieved by separating the front from the back and then securing the back into a pony tail. Pull small, random sections from each side, sweeping and pinning them around the pony tail to complete the look (2724 Chippewa St., South City, 314.771.1175).
Coming Up Roses
Punk Princess Seen on the runway at Peter Som. A subculture no more, the punk look (a tad subdued) is going mainstream.
Local mom Jean Scholtes started making non-irritating products to care for her family's sensitive skin, and in turn, unwittingly formed a successful brand of skin and hair care products. Our favorite? KIND Soap's Rosewater Creme; we love it not only for its fabulous hydrating qualities, but also for the crave-worthy packaging (43 S. Old Orchard, Webster Groves, 314.517.2868).
Get the look: If it's pink, purple or orange you're craving, Illusions Color Spa sells a great temporary product called Color Bug by Kevin Murphy. It works best on light hair and includes multiple applications, so you can achieve the “punk princess” look any time the mood strikes (4579 Chestnut Park Plz., South County, 314.845.0118). Not quite ready for rainbow color? Try Regal Image Salon's new hot-for-Hollywood dip and dye coloring. A major Hollywood trend, the hair is dyed to get lighter toward the ends (located in Metro Design Studio Salons, 612 N. McKnight Rd., Olivette, 314.629.4902).

Top It Off A runway staple, it seems the fashion world can't get enough of the top knot. Get the look: There are many tricks to perfecting a top knot, and Vita Kaiser, a stylist at LookAfter Hair Company, knows them all. She suggests starting with a simply pony tail, and wrapping the length of the hair around the base. Secure the look with bobby pins, and finish with an extra-hold hairspray for maximum shine. Bronzed Goddess
Seen on the runway at TCN. A must-have look for your spring makeup repertoire, this warm-weather staple works particularly well with spring's icy pastel hues. Get the look: Start with a good base tan—faux, of course. While you're at it, make the most of your tanning time with a faux glow containing a hydrating treatment and built-in anti-aging ingredients (Shine Sunless Tanning, 5 Brentwood Promenade Ct., Brentwood, 314.962.3628). Once your sunless tan has set (four to six hours), finish the look with a bronzing powder in a rich, earthy hue. We like Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess with bronzing and highlighting elements (Neiman Marcus, Plaza Frontenac, 314.567.9811).
Pro Picks Three skincare products you can't live without.
1
The Product: Azfasst Green Tea Gel The Expert: Dr. Anne Riordan, dermatologist and creator of Azfasst Why it's a must: According to Dr. Riordan, it's the combination of the three key ingredients that make the gel so unique and effective. Natural green tea extract coupled with salicylic and lactic acids help alleviate brown spots and fine lines—giving you a clearer, more refined complexion. Where to find it: Online at azfasst.com, or at Wildwood Dermatology, 16516 Manchester Rd.,Wildwood, 636.458.8400.
2
The Product: Skin Medica's TNS Recovery Complex The Expert: Mary McKaig, RN BSN Why it's a must: If McKaig and her coworkers refer to something as “liquid gold,” it must be good. In as little as three months, experts say you'll see a difference in the texture and firmness of your skin—plus a noticeable decrease in wrinkle depth. With growth factors, soluble collagen, antioxidants and matrix proteins, the ingredients mimic those found in healthy skin. Where to find it: Laser & Dermatologic Surgery Center, 1001 Chesterfield Parkway East, Ste. 101, Chesterfield, 314.878.3839.
Tricks of the Trade
The Nail Files Don't call it a comeback (they've been here for years), but the newest nails are undoubtedly more graphic than we've seen in a while. From spring's Easteregg hues (perfect in beige, pink or robin's egg blue) to the latest take on dark nails (a navy Gothprep lovechild), this season, it's pretty much anything goes. The only exception? Length. The style-conscious are decidedly leaning toward a mid-length look with a square shape, according to Melissa Vitalis, assistant spa and salon director for The Spa at the Four Seasons. The long nail look is over! Drop by the Spa at the Four Seasons to get pampered while you get the look, or recreate it at home with the help of State Beauty Supply nail polishes (999 N. 2nd St., Downtown, 314.881.5800; 2351 Millpark Dr., Maryland Heights, 314.423.9599).
3
The Product: Image Daily Defense Ultimate Preventive Moisturizer The Expert: Dr. Amy Miller Why it's a must: Dr. Miller says that using a daily sunscreen (rain or shine) is still the best way to protect your skin from premature aging. She opts for Image Daily Defense Ultimate Preventive Moisturizer because it performs double duty as an effective sunscreen and daily moisturizer. Where to find it: St. Louis Skin Solutions, 13100 Manchester Rd., Ste. 250, Des Peres, 314.543.4015. alivemag.com

If DIY is more your style, try Sephora's Perfecting Cover Foundation with a good balance of matte and shine. Test two or three shades on your jawline (not the back of your hand), and blend well, working from the middle of your face outward. Finish by lightly buffing your chin and neck to camouflage any contrast in color (Sephora, Saint Louis Galleria, 314.863.2600).

Wet & Wild
Seen on the runway at Roberto Torretta. No time to blow dry? No problem. Running out after a shower has never been easier, or more stylish, now that the “wet” look is so on-trend. Get the look: Hair stylist Robert Govero says achieving the wet look at home is possible; you just need a few essentials. For ultimate hold, he recommends a combination of Osis Flexwax and L'Oreal Lumi Controle Wax. Use your hands to evenly distribute a liberal amount through the hair, and sculpt the look with a rat tail comb. Finish by securing strands into a low, tight pony tail or tucking behind the ears (8111 Maryland Ave., Clayton, 314.725.6179).

Do the Twist Seen on the runway at Majaco. It's rare that an accessory is both decorative and utilitarian—the head-perfect scarf is all that and more. Get the look: Meggan Decker of Pixies Hair Design takes the head scarf look from runway to real life with a few simple tweaks. She often twists the scarf into a modern headband, securing it at the nape of the neck and allowing the length to hang down. For extra soft or fine tresses, secure the scarf with a bobby pin to avoid slippage, or purchase one with texture for a more secure hold (2709 Sutton Blvd., Maplewood, 314.605.8417; scarf available at Ivy Hill, 304 N. Euclid Ave., Central West End, 314.367.7004). alivemag.com
No Pain, No Gain There have been countless advancements in the skincare industry, and in-office procedures are still the gold standard for achieving and maintaining the look of your skin. Botox, resurfacing and peels are the go-to procedures at many spas and doctors' offices. But, first, be sure you know the basics. Botox: Once reserved only for the furrow lines between the brows, Botox is now being used for a few additional purposes. On the face, it can help diminish stubborn crow's feet. It's also proven to be a breakthrough for those who suffer from certain types of excessive sweating. (Find out more at Plastic Surgery Consultants of St. Louis at St. Anthony's Medical Center, 10004 Kennerly Rd., Ste. 365B0, South County, 314.842.5885) Laser Treatment: For real results in just one session, Fractional CO2 promises to improve texture, tone skin and soften wrinkles. The laser targets just a fraction of the skin's surface at a time, which for many, translates to quicker healing and minimal downtime. (Find out more at St. Louis Skin Solutions, 13100 Manchester Rd., Ste. 250, Des Peres, 314.543.4015.) Peels: The probiotic peel is the answer for those consumers looking for minimal downtime. According to Michelle Somers, director of Synergi MedSpa, the peel is unique because it works from the inside out to rejuvenate skin and improve tone and texture without the typical downtime associated with other peels. Synergi recommends a package of three for maximum results (17000 Baxter Rd., Ste. 100, Chesterfield, 636.530.6100).

Vaginal Surgery and Urogynecology
Dr. Dionysios Veronikis Vaginal Surgery & Urogynecology Institute 621 S. New Ballas Road, Suite 2002 B 314.251.6753 stlvaginalrejuvenation.com Our Specialties: Vaginal hysterectomy that is cosmetic, non-invasive and scar free for uterine problems and uterovaginal prolapse, stress urinary incontinence, management of vaginal mesh complications, complicated re-operative vaginal and gynecologic surgery for recurrent/ persistent incontinence and prolapse, vaginal rejuvenation and cosmetic vaginal surgery. What We’re Known For: Vaginal Rejuvenation is the fastest growing segment of vaginal cosmetic surgery among women between the ages of 25-40. It counteracts functional alterations from childbirth and aging by reconstructing and sculpting the tissues in the vaginal walls—allowing women to reexperience the sensations they enjoyed pre-pregnancy. On the Cutting Edge: We are further expanding the learning center on our website to help educate women and their families on the pelvic floor and surgical options. It currently includes an Anatomy Library with colorful images of common conditions and procedures, as well as an extensive Resource Library that discusses common surgical conditions and treatment options. Our next phases include the addition of video educational resources, as well as private access to actual anatomy images for those patients considering Vaginal Rejuvenation, Labialplasty and/or other procedures. Expert Advice: We commonly treat women seeking relief from a current condition or a previous surgical procedure performed elsewhere that did not meet the expected result. My hope is to better educate women on their surgical options, so that they can
make better, more informed decisions on choosing a surgeon and minimize the risk of complications. It should be stated that although a procedure like Vaginal Rejuvenation is considered a cosmetic procedure, not all cosmetic surgeons have the same level of experience in sculpting the vaginal canal, tissues and the labia. This is earned through years of experience, focus, expertise and the surgeon’s artistic ability. There are a handful of vaginal surgeons in the nation who truly qualify in performing Vaginal Rejuvenation procedures, and we’re proud to be part of this very specialized group.

I achieve this by providing a full spectrum of dermatological care in a comfortable office with a friendly and highly skilled staff. Importantly, we strive to see patients in a timely and efficient manner, always making room for the dermatologic emergency—even for new patients. Expert Advice: We all know that skin cancer is directly related to ultraviolet exposure, making tanning beds a major culprit in the recent dramatic increase in skin cancer, particularly in young people. We also know how difficult it is to pass along this message to our children. But remember, our children are smart—it is not enough to warn them of the dangers and instruct them on protective measures to minimize their risk of skin cancer. YOU must model safe sun practices by staying away from tanning beds and using proper protection in the sun.

Our Specialties: Our team of board-certified plastic surgeons offers some of the top cosmetic surgery procedures available, including breast augmentations, tummy tucks, facelifts, rhinoplasty, “mommy makeovers,” post weight loss surgery and more. What We’re Known for: We are the only plastic surgeons in the St. Louis area to offer Vectra 3D imaging, which maps your anatomy and simulates images based on the procedure you are considering. This is especially beneficial
for those wary of what his or her results from plastic surgery will look like. We go through each of these images, discuss all your options and help you choose the best procedure based on these simulated possibilities. Expert Advice: Choose a board-certified plastic surgeon. There are many surgeons out there who do cosmetic procedures, but finding a surgeon with the education, training and ethics required of boardcertified physicians is imperative for optimal surgical results.
