Simple. Effective. Beautiful. Looking your best is important at any age. Over time, the facial muscles you use to frown, laugh or squint can contract, creasing your skin. Eventually those creases may deepen into permanent lines that can leave you looking angry or worried. Fortunately, there are simple, effective, non-surgical treatments to relax those muscles and restore your youthful, natural look. Many people have used Botox ® Cosmetic with excellent results. Dysport™, which has been used successfully overseas for nearly 20 years, is also now available here and may be an option for you. Talking with a plastic surgeon is the best way to determine which treatment is best for you. Visit our website to learn more or call us for a consultation. We can help you get rid of those unsightly frown lines and wrinkles, quickly and easily.
No one will know. Everyone will notice.

Can you really get fit with just one 20-minute workout a week? Just ask the doctors.
After age 30, we lose 8 to 10 pounds of muscle a decade. Once we hit 50, it gets worse. But there’s a way to stop muscle loss.
Changing the way you look at exercise…forever
“
This workout routine fits perfectly with my lifestyle and produces excellent results. It has increased my strength and improved my muscle tone.
So many doctors work out here, in fact, that we call it “The Doctors’ Workout.” And all it takes is one 20-minute session a week.

ver an adventure, pulling off the shoot for this month’s fashion editorial was more like a miracle. Every spring through fall, we repeatedly transport our photo crew to small Midwest towns to take advantage of their ideal, picturesque landscapes while the weather permits. This time around, the destination was a cabin on the Meramec River in St. Clair, MO; the surrounding farmland was the perfect backdrop for our wardrobe, centered on classic American fashions from Saks Fifth Avenue. We were lucky that hours of heavy thunderstorms flip-flopped with periods of beautiful sunlight, making our outdoor shots possible. The week before, we were excited about our annual Sexy & Successful party, always one of the biggest bashes of the year. This year, the event doubled as a launch party for Red Kitchen & Bar, the new hotspot located in Downtown’s Hyatt Regency St. Louis Riverfront Hotel. Attendees including Amit Dhawan, designer Michael Drummond and local lenswoman Katherine Bish sipped drinks by Ecco Domani, Coors and New Amsterdam and chatted up Sexy & Successful nominees Allyson Mace, Godfried Addae and Laura Nicol. After months of anticipation, the dramatic unveiling of the top four honorees, Emily Clark, Teddy Blackett, Carissa Sweigart and Joey Giliberti, complete with crowns, was a highlight of the evening. Later in the month, we made our way to Midtown for the one-year anniversary of EXO Restaurant & Lounge. The crowd enjoyed appetizers and Bud Select on the popular patio and mingled in the modern, loft-like interior with owners Harry Michel and Fred L. Finley. Join us this month at the Saint Louis Fashion Week wrap party on Thanksgiving Eve, Wednesday, November 25 at Red Kitchen & Bar. For more info, log on to alivemag.com.

M
ost of us know Mark Twain’s famous adage, “Clothes make the man,” a saying as true today as it was in his time. As one of Missouri’s original men of style, the author and social critic was well aware of the impact clothing could have; he used it to manage his public persona—rocking a crisp white suit year-round—and described in his many books and essays the wardrobes of people from King Arthur’s era to that of his own. A century later, his observation couldn’t be keener. The right clothes can transform a man from guy to gent, and men can rule the room with the right wardrobe choices (and, of course, the confidence to pull them off). This month, we dedicate our annual “Men of Style” feature to seven St. Louis boys who do it best. Rule the room they do—from the newsroom to the dressing room; from the boardroom to the locker room. And, during the two days of photo shoots for the story on p.76, they ruled the ornate hallways, shadowy staircases and dark alleys of Downtown’s Roberts Orpheum Theater. Built in 1912, the historic structure proved the perfect setting for our noir-inspired photo editorial shot by Tuan Lee and directed by David Hsia. In scenes that evoke drama and mystery, these sharp-dressed power players don classic suits from Saks Fifth Avenue to play heroes reminiscent of those in classic films like Rear Window and The Maltese Falcon. SLSO’s Principal Cellist Daniel Lee slips in the stage entrance door (shot the day before his stellar solo performance at Powell) while Erik Johnson of the St. Louis Blues owns the dark alley. The only things missing from the stunning images are the archetypal femme fatale and a haze of cigarette smoke—though we did have a lot of fun with a smoke machine. When it comes to ruling the room, I really have to give it to this month’s cover boy, Jack Dorsey. As creator and CEO of the ubiquitous social networking utility Twitter, the St. Louis native pretty much rules a whole new world (aka Twitterverse) complete with its own language (aka Twinacular). After he came to town in September to receive the key to the city from Mayor Slay (@MayorSlay)—who even versed his Jack Twitter Day proclamation in 140 characters or less—Jack’s St. Louis roots became known to local Twitter users (aka Tweeps). ALIVE contributor Moira Dorsey had the inside track, however, as his cousin, and got to spend some QT with Jack while he was here. We can’t think of a better representative of today’s “modern man” as Dorsey—known to the over five million Twitter users as simply @jack. He shares his thoughts on entrepreneurism and future plans for his business on p.84.
Living by one’s own rules? Always in style.
Cover boy Jack Dorsey’s “Life Lessons,” posted in his San Francisco home.
Headshot by Tuan Lee; Right photo by Jack Dorsey.
Other must-reads for guys this month include entertaining tips by man-about-town Bill Donius, one of St. Louis’ most stylish, successful gents, and “Guy’s Guide,” a list of must-haves for the modern St. Louis man written by local entrepreneur, businessman and TV host David Siteman Garland. Men, take note. Ladies, take notice…

In hunting for hot happenings around town for the monthly arts, culture and entertainment calendar (p.40), contributing writer Kristin Stefek Brashares has found herself cramming even more outings into her already-packed agenda. Discovering more to do in The Lou has proven OK, though, as she gets stir crazy sitting around the house too long. Outside of ALIVE, Kristin is the managing editor of DECOR, a national art-and-framing magazine based in St. Louis.
Photographer Tuan Lee is happy to report that his new studio Downtown has been an incredibly satisfying adventure. “Working in the studio at any given time, for testing light, ideas or collaborations, is a wonderful experience. It’s easy to see why scientists spend hours realizing they need to go home, shower or eat.” Tuan Lee is an active contributor; this month he photographed the annual “Men of Style” feature (p.76).

Hair designer, clothing stylist, fashion writer and runway coordinator are just a few of the positions Moira Dorsey currently holds. As a fashion assistant on ALIVE’s fashion photo shoots and a hair artist, stylist and contributing writer for online magazine Corridor40, she is happy to be contributing to ALIVE this month as the writer of the cover story on Jack Dorsey (p.84). It’s no coincidence that the two share a last name; the Twitter creator also happens to be her cousin. So much for journalistic integrity.
The luxury of a mid-afternoon chocolate break at Café Cioccolato (p.42) is an assignment Amy De La Hunt wouldn’t mind repeating every month. The busy mom of two boys (ages 6 and 3) writes freelance articles on restaurants, food and cooking for a variety of clients, including Missouri Life magazine and Gayot.com. She’s also the contributing editor at St. Louis Kids magazine, where her favorite topics include education, parenting and familyfriendly destinations.

Hit for the holidays: Leinenkugel’s Fireside Nut Brown.

wine menu that includes unoaked Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet, Pinot Noir, Chianti and port. (Cocktails, liqueurs and beers are in the works.) Then there are the brave souls who select chocolate-covered ganache infused with curry, chili, paprika, cardamom or allspice. And, as you’d expect in a shop that sells exquisite chocolates, there are the lovers, who’re often in the mood for the Divine Calvados Hearts, white chocolate with a burst of apple liqueur under a candy-red exterior. There’s more to the café than those alluring display cases. The upstairs event space has been booking parties since early fall, and the retail shop includes the same goodies as previous Cioccolato locations, including perennially popular single-origin and dark chocolate bars. There’s room to expand, and we can only imagine the delicious possibilities that lie ahead (816 Olive St., Downtown, 314.241.6368).
Try pairing Leinenkugel’s Fireside Nut Brown with Schnucks’ Spiral Sliced Turkey. The roasted malt flavor of the lager enhances the glazed turkey and is a perfect pairing to serve for Thanksgiving. For additional beer and food pairings, log on to schnuckscooks.com.
Brio tuscan grille Sure, you can stop by Brio Tuscan Grille for lunch or a nice dinner of grilled seafood and plate of fresh pasta. Maybe you’ve even dined for brunch. But you haven’t experienced Brio until you’ve been during happy hour. What could be better than hours of apps specials in the beautiful Tuscan-themed bar? Brio makes it easy to sample from their appetizers with the Tuscan Taster Bar Menu (available weekdays from 3pm-6pm and 9pm-close) as well as $2.95 appetizers. Stop by every Wednesday and enjoy $2 off martinis while mingling with the well-heeled hotties and professionals who frequently converge at this upscale Frontenac dining and drinking destination (1601 S. Lindbergh Blvd., Frontenac, 314.432.4410).

> As fruits, grapes and cacao don’t have much in common. But refined to perfection, their end products—wine and chocolate—are a match made in heaven. Café Cioccolato, a new Downtown venue from a longtime importer of fine European chocolates, invites chocoholics and wine lovers to join forces six afternoons a week plus Friday and Saturday evenings. It’s possible to buy Belgian, Swiss, Italian and French truffles or bonbons to go from the elegant shop’s display cases, but customers who stay are in for a luxurious treat— while they relax on sofas, the staff brings their selections on silver trays.
Nothing says fall like a wellbalanced lager with flavors like hazelnut and maple that imbue warm and cozy sensations synonymous with the holiday season. Just in time for the holidays, Leinenkugel has rolled out their fall brew, Fireside Nut Brown, a well-balanced Englishstyle lager that is deliciously satisfying. With caramel, hazelnut and chocolate notes—yes, chocolate—this aromatic lager is sweet and complements most holiday meals.

At Home with Bill Donius Take it from this STL socialisto; these five party-planning tips make holiday hosting a cinch. By Sheniqua Faulkner | Photo by Carmen Troesser
> Bill Donius—an influential St. Louis businessman and philanthropist known for his outgoing personality and put-together personal style—is the consummate host. Sure, his stunning home and natural knack for working a room help, but Donius tells us that hosting our own at-home fête can be done stress free. We’ll definitely be putting his advice to use this season for our own memorable holiday soirees.
1.
Create a palatable vibe. “My favorite party-planning task is setting the mood,” says Donius, who suggests keeping a simple and constant theme throughout, from the invitation to the decorations, lighting and music. Donius also encourages hosts to send invitations through the mail instead of an email for a more elegant, memorable touch. “Mailed invites are the best way to set the expectation for the event; and, they generally get a better response,” he says. TOP TIP: Make your invitations stand out from junk mail; use highquality paper in a theme-appropriate color. Further illustrate the theme with an eye-catching photograph or commission a designer to create a one-of-a-kind graphic.
2.
I t’s all in the numbers. “I look at estimating the number of guests for my parties a bit like the airlines estimate their flight load,” Donius says. “I assume 20% will not be able to attend; I also assume that there will be another 10% who come that I didn’t expect, as guests might bring another guest or two in some cases.” TOP TIP: If you’re expecting more guests than you have parking, consider asking guests to park their cars at a nearby church or school and using a transportation company to bring them to your home by shuttle.
3.
if you feed them, they will come. Even the time-pressed and non-chefs among us can serve delicious food at their holiday parties, says Donius. “Fortunately, there are many great caters in St. Louis that make it easy. Three that I use are David Schwartz, Tim Brennan and Bryan Young.” TOP TIP: Don’t have the budget to hire a caterer? Donius suggests picking up prepared appetizers from Schnucks, Dierbergs or Straub’s.
4.
That’s the spirit! Purchasing alcohol for your event can get expensive. To remedy, Donius suggests creating a special cocktail that fits the theme. Provide beer and wine in addition to your signature drink, and everyone should be able to enjoy something they like. This season, Donius will serve a festive holiday cocktail of vodka, white cranberry juice and a peppermint candy garnish. TOP TIP: Control your guests’ consumption by serving drinks in smaller glasses, says Donius, who reminds us that a good host monitors guests’ alcohol intake and ensures their safe return home.
5.
Mind the time. Do as Donius does; keep your party short and sweet. “If your party is spread out over five hours, it may never reach critical mass,” he says. Keep the energy up by compressing the duration of the event. After all, the more friends you can get into one room, the merrier. TOP TIP: Be sure to include guests from your different social circles. “I always try to include guests that don’t know each other well,” says Donius. “It makes for a more interesting, livelier party.”

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS If you’re playing holiday host to a full house this year, the recently built Homewood Suites by Hilton, across from the Saint Louis Galleria, is the ideal place to put up out-of-town guests. It offers all the comfy amenities you’d expect in an all-suite hotel—spacious, clean rooms with equipped kitchens, free high-speed Internet and a fitness center with a personal trainer on site. The coolest feature of this hotel is the Suite Shop, a fully stocked gift store where locally produced St. Louis favorites— Schlafly beer, Ted Drewes frozen custard, Bissinger’s chocolates, Dad’s Scotch Oatmeal Cookies, Switzer’s licorice, Lucia’s toasted ravioli and Fitz’s root beer (the hotel sits on the grounds of Fitz’s original drive-in hamburger stand location)— are available 24 hours a day. So when your friends and relatives stay at Homewood Suites this holiday season, you can feel confident they’ll receive a deliciously fulfilling STL experience (8040 Clayton Rd., Richmond Heights, 314.863.7700).

Hot Block: East Loop This month, ALIVE’s Sheniqua Faulkner takes in the eclectic strip of Delmar that lies east of Skinker Boulevard.
it has a vibe that is unlike anywhere else in St. Louis. Amazing dining, specialty shopping and the heart of St. Louis’ music scene call this block home. Whether I’m there during the day to do some shopping or coiffing at my hair salon, or visit at night for a bite with friends or to take in an energetic show at The Pageant, the East Loop is a Hot Block that rocks around the clock.

When I was a new St. Louisan a little more than two years ago, I discovered the awesomeness that is the East Loop out of sheer necessity—make that vanity. My first visit to the block was for a hair appointment at V. VEGAZ, a funky salon that, among many things, specializes in curly hair. I regularly visit Helen, my go-to gal for hair nirvana, and usually end up spending the day in the area.

As I step out of the salon, the divine aroma of freshly made pizza at PI replaces the scent of shampoo and aerosol. The delish deep-dish San Fran-style pizza and ecologically sustainable practices won over Obama—and all of St. Louis, it seems. Even at the busiest times, when the wait can peak at two hours, patrons happily wait for a table. So worth it. My favorite variety is the Bucktown: mozzarella, roasted chicken, artichoke hearts, red bell peppers, green olives, red onions, feta and sun-dried tomatoes. Delish!

For after dinner drinks with friends, there is no better view of the Loop than atop the MOONRISE HOTEL’s rooftop bar. Everything about this quirky-cool boutique hotel is eyecatching, from the dazzling lighted staircase to the stunning Chihulyinspired chandelier in the lobby. The ALIVE team stayed at the hotel for our annual staff retreat in August, and the amenities and service are out-of-this-world. Hotel sales manager Harry Lunt tells me that Moonrise even caters to four-legged guests; pooches get the posh treatment with special pet-friendly rooms and a pampering session at a local dog groomer such as Delmar Doggie Design. Makes me want a puppy that much more…

With the holiday season approaching, I will definitely be spending some money in this end of The Loop. I love the one-of-a-kind offerings at CULTURE CAFÉ, an eatery/art gallery. Across the street at BIG SHARK BICYCLE CO., I look at some accessories for my boyfriend, who is a recreational gear-head. I’m sure to find something he doesn’t have among the rows of bikes and apparel. As I walk up the street toward my car, I stop in to KILLER VINTAGE, a new-ish store to The Loop that specializes in buying, selling, trading and repairing guitars. Resident guitar gurus Dave Hinson and Jimmy Griffin tell me they are the only place in St. Louis you can score original Frank Campagna art (Campagna is the artist known for creating the panels the House of Blues uses to announce coming artists). The beautiful vintage guitars that line the walls are art in and of themselves. I make a mental note to put a shiny candy-apple red one on my own wish list.

Select, Collect, Effect Two national companies team up to benefit a local nonprofit that helps nourish St. Louisans living with HIV/AIDS and cancer. By Sheniqua Faulkner
> This month, three influential organizations
will come together for a common cause. The Boston Beer Company—maker of Samuel Adams—Applebee’s and Food Outreach launch “Select, Collect, Effect,” a canned food initiative that urges St. Louisans to donate goods at participating Applebee’s locations. The goods will help Food Outreach in its mission to provide nutritional support to those living with HIV/AIDS and cancer in the Metro area. In addition to the month-long food collection drive, 30 St. Louis Applebee’s locations will also host an event called “Let’s Dish” on November 17. Applebee’s will donate 15% of the night’s proceeds to Food Outreach.
A HISTORY OF KINDNESS
Recognized as much for their commitments to giving back to their communities as they are for their award-winning products and services, The Boston Beer Company and Applebee’s have been involved with hundreds of charitable efforts in all areas of need. “When I met [Food Outreach’s Executive Director] Greg Lukeman and the Food Outreach team, I fell in love with the staff and what the organization is about,“ says Carissa Sweigart, The Boston Beer Company’s National Account Manager for the Colorado,
Kansas and Missouri region. Sweigart and Applebee’s Steve Longenecker put their philanthropic energies together with that of Lukeman and Food Outreach’s Director of Development, Becky Reichardt, to create Collect, Select, Effect. “Sam Adams and Applebee’s are to be commended for their innovative approach to ensure people living with HIV/AIDS or cancer get enough to eat,” says Lukeman. GET INVOLVED
In its 21-year history, Food Outreach has provided over three million meals to over 10,000 clients, a feat that would not be possible without the help of canned food donations. Throughout the month of November, stop in to a participating Applebee’s and drop off your canned food donation. Each time you donate, you will receive a raffle ticket to win a party at Food Outreach as a thanks for giving back. Then, on November 17, visit one of the 30 participating Applebee’s between 6pm-9pm for “Let’s Dish.” That night, 15% of your check will automatically be donated to Food Outreach. You’ll leave with both your hunger and your inner do-gooder satisfied. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT “SELECT, COLLECT, eFFECT” AND A LIST OF PARTICIPATING APPLEBEE’S LOCATIONS, VISIT ALIVEMAG.COM.

FOOD OUTREACH Twenty-one years ago, Food Outreach began as a small group of friends gathered at a local church kitchen to cook meals for seven friends who were living with HIV/ AIDS. The prepared meals were later supplemented by a satellite grocery offering everyday food staples. Three years after that, Food Outreach opened its current 10,000 square-foot facility in Midtown, where the freshly made meals and grocery are available to clients in one convenient location. In 2006, the organization unanimously voted to include low-income cancer patients in its important mission. Today, 600 dedicated volunteers help the Food Outreach staff average a production of 1,100 meals per day, putting the organization on pace to serve 410,000 meals this year to clients in need.

Guy’s Guide Must-haves for the modern St. Louis man.
> There may not be a manual for the up-and-coming modern STL man, but guys, don’t despair. Staying up-to-the-minute on the latest trends isn’t as daunting as it seems. This month, we asked David Siteman Garland, businessman, entrepreneur and host of “The Rise to the Top,” to share his picks—from gotta-get gadgets to stylish suits—for every man on the move.
By David Siteman Garland
TURN THE PAGE I’m always reading. Outliers , by Malcolm Gladwell, is one of those stops-you-in-your-tracks books. It reveals that success isn’t just genetic; it’s about being in the right place at the right time. I find myself quoting this book when I meet with clients—it’s a great book for any young professional (Left Bank Books, 314.367.6731).
SUIT UP My favorite no-pleated-pants suit option is Indochino, one of the largest online designers of men’s suits (indochino.com). The suits are sleek and fit great because they are completely custom-made and shipped to my door in about two weeks. My favorite style is their “Berlin Means Business” suit (Navy Pick Stitch, shown).
SMELL OF SUCCESS Nothing is worse than an unsexy smell. Tom Ford brings a little crispness to my life whether I’m on set or meeting with a client. Something about Tom Ford’s creativity spurs mine (Neiman Marcus, 314.567.9811).
TUNE IN Before the show, I like to get geared up by listening to my favorite St. Louis band, Ludo, on my iPod. I love the latest version, equipped with a video camera for impromptu taping when I’m out and about (apple.com).

Do-It-Yourself Style One fashion editor’s afternoon at a DIYStyle workshop reveals an uncharted facet of fashion.
T he Loo k for L ess
GET CRAFTY Since its launch in 2007—by mother-daughter duo Cindy Cummins and Allyce King, fashion designers/ instructors/writers who noticed the sewing industry’s untapped twenty-something market—DIYStyle has evolved into a popular style source for young, highfashion-inspired “Creative Chicks” who love to sew, craft and make. In addition to regular on-site sewing
54 ALIVE STL november 2009
classes and how-to workshops, DIYStyle is widely known for its website, which is home to weekly vodcasts, a project database and an online community. STYLE MADE SIMPLE
So, while I took comfort in fashioning a pair of panties (my choice introductory DIY attempt; a masterpiece, if I do say so myself) under the guidance of an expert, you can choose to play out your inaugural project in the confines of your home. Some are more conservative about their fashion choices (diystyle.net).
For a crash course in all things DIY, head to the Do-It-Yourself Diva’s Expo November 13–14 at the St. Charles Convention Center. For more information, go to diydivaexpo.com.
When you have your heart set on a hot designer accessory but can’t justify forking over nearly $1,000 for a piece of fashion, DIYStyle’s Cindy Cummins is the perfect gal to know. Inspired by Oscar de la Renta’s FW09 Embroidered Roll Clutch, which carries a $990 price tag, Cummins created a dazzling doppelganger, which incorporated Crystallized Swarovski Elements, for under $40. All in a day’s work for this “Creative Chick.”
diy For info on how you, too, can create a luxe look for a lot less at a DIYStyle workshop, log on to diystyle.net.

> When it comes to do-it-yourself projects, my parameters extend about as far as glittering shoes, abusing a Bedazzler (I add studs to everything!) and putting scissors to dresses I consider too long (unfinished hems are hot, right?). Still, as a fashion editor whose job is clothesfocused, I’ve always been fascinated by the elaborate school projects of my fashion design student interns—and have deemed it “just wrong“ that I have never, in all of my life, put my foot to the pedal of a sewing machine (aka, minefield). So, when I heard about a recent DIYStyle workshop that promised sewing stations and more, I rounded up some gal pals and set my sights on draping, dress forms and a Tim Gunn-style mentor of my very own.

3 Covet-Worthy Coat Trends for Fall Masculine and feminine takes on outerwear’s most sought-after styles. By Jill Manoff | Photos by Josh Monken
> When you were younger, you could swipe your significant other’s performance fleece on your way out the door and call it a day. Since then, your tastes have evolved; your style is more defined and you have a look that’s all your own. While designers continue to come out with classic outerwear styles that are similar for both sexes, most are specialized with tweaks, pleats, ruffles and more—as what works for you won’t likely work for the next guy. Or girl.

If purchasing high-fashion footwear is outside your realm of possibilities, you’ll understand my love for Bakers’ Buckley boot. Obviously inspired by Balmain FW09 footwear, there are a few important differences: the Buckley has a chunkier heel, is made of leather versus suede and sells for about one-tenth the cost of its designer counterpart; basically, everything I would have changed about the original. Available at Bakers, Saint Louis Galleria, 314.725.6155.

Watch Out After seasons of men’s ready-to-wear heavy in black on black, it’s about time watches for him followed suit. By Jill Manoff | Photos by Josh Monken
> For many men, it seems, the decision to sport most any accessory is a question of courage (i.e., “Can I pull off a cuff?” or “Does this messenger bag look too much like my girlfriend’s purse?”). A timepiece is practically the only safe haven for that trend-timid male who longs to accessorize-slash-wear style on his sleeve with confidence. For him, going bold this season best translates to investing in a timely, monochromatic watch. The color of the moment? Surprisingly, his go-to: black. So, it’s not so much as taking a flying leap as it is placing his hands at 10 and 2 and heading to his local jeweler; it won’t earn him daredevil status, but it‘s a tick in the right direction.

Audi’s ads tout progress, and that’s exactly what’s been made with the S4. Based on the roomier new A4, four new technologies make the 2010 model the most athletic S4 yet: a lighter supercharged V6, a quick-shifting 7-speed dual clutch automatic, Drive Select—to personalize the car’s feel and responses—and the Sport Differential that varies speeds between the rear wheels to help steer the car. Added to Audi’s peerless design and construction, they make the S4 one of the most versatile yet desirable sedans on the market. —Daanesh Chanduwadia, carcounsel.com.

In honor of our Men’s Issue, the expert culinarians at Schnucks Cooks have created a meal that the guys in our lives would happily devour, or if we’re lucky, actually get in the kitchen and cook themselves. This juicy rack of lamb and rich and creamy Gruyère potato gratin dish dresses up his favorite meat and potatoes dinner with delicious results.
What you need:
What to do:
• 1 (8-rib) frenched rack of lamb (about 2 pounds)
1.
• 1 1/2 tsp kosher salt • 1/2 tsp coarsely ground black pepper
reheat oven to 425°F. Rub lamb with salt and P pepper; place lamb, fat side up, in small roasting pan. Roast 15 minutes.
2. M eanwhile, from lemons, grate 2 teaspoons peel. In food processor with knife blade attached, pulse garlic until finely chopped, occasionally scraping bowl with rubber spatula. Tear bread into pieces and add to processor with parsley and lemon peel; pulse until finely chopped, occasionally scraping bowl.
• 2 lemons • 3 garlic cloves • 2 slices Schnucks white bread • 2 cups loosely packed fresh Italian parsley leaves
3. R emove roast from oven; carefully press bread
• 2 tbsp Schnucks butter, melted
crumb mixture on top of lamb. Drizzle bread crumb mixture with butter. Roast lamb 15 to 20 minutes longer or until instant-read thermometer inserted in center reaches 145°F for medium-rare and coating is golden brown. Let roast stand 5 minutes to set juices. Transfer lamb to cutting board; cut between the rack bones into individual chops to serve.

WHAT YOU NEED:
WHAT TO DO:
• 1 1/2 cups Schnucks heavy whipping cream
1.
• 1 3/4 tsp salt • 1/4 tsp ground red pepper (cayenne) • 3 pounds russet potatoes (about 6 medium),

Preheat oven to 425°F. Lightly grease shallow 3-quart or 13 x 9-inch glass or ceramic baking dish.
2. I n 4-quart saucepan, combine cream, salt, and ground red pepper; heat to boiling over mediumhigh heat. Add potatoes and cook 3 minutes or until mixture thickens slightly, stirring occasionally.
3. T ransfer half of potato mixture to prepared baking dish; sprinkle evenly with 1 1/2 cups Gruyère. Top evenly with remaining potato mixture and 1/2 cup Gruyère.
4. B ake gratin, uncovered, 35 to 40 minutes or until potatoes are tender when pierced with knife and top is golden. If necessary, cover gratin with foil during last 10 minutes of cooking to avoid over-browning. Let gratin stand 5 minutes before serving.

Sterling Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Standing in the wine aisle dumbfounded? Most of us understand that red meats pair better with red wines, but not all reds are created equal. Schnucks Cooks have selected the ideal wine to bring out the delicious flavors of the rack of lamb. Sterling Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, with its heady aromas of black cherry, blackberry and subtler hints of cedar and mocha, is potent enough to stand up to the hearty flavors of the dish without overpowering or falling flat. Fourteen months of barrel-aging add toasty oak notes that highlight the slightly nutty quality of Gruyère cheese, while the wine’s ripe fruit flavors, touched with clove and allspice, add to the silky, rich mouthfeel of the lamb. Sterling Vineyards Napa valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($25) is available at Schnucks.

for wine lovers with
impeccable taste.
Sourced from distinctive terroir throughout Napa Valley—along with one Knights Valley vineyard— our Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon expresses spicy black cherry, briary blackberry, and mocha aromas and flavors. Hints of clove and anise persist over the lengthy finish, and ripe tannins add structure and plush texture on the palate.

> Long-distance relationships aren’t always known to last, but this couple beat the odds with an unbreakable bond that started when they were teenagers. When Bradley went to college in Indiana, and Tiffany stayed back in St. Louis, they continued to date—logging lots of miles on their cars and racking up hefty phone bills. Soon after graduation, Bradley popped the question in front of Tiffany’s entire family during a New Year’s Eve party. THE BIG DAY: With towering ceilings and end-
less rows of pews, the First Presbyterian Church of Kirkwood proved the perfect fit for the couple’s gigantic guest list and desire for a grand ceremony. Tiffany tracked down the original score for a song from one of her favorite movies, One Night with the King, and a string quartet replicated the tune for her walk down the aisle. With Joel Marion Photography (636.861.2400, joelmarionphoto.com) on hand to capture the ceremony and every moment, the couple exchanged vows on May 30 against a beautiful backdrop of stained-glass windows.
THE DRESS: Tiffany fulfilled her lifelong wedding-day dream of becoming a princess bride with the help of a barely-fit-through-thedoor beaded-bodice dress from Maiden Voyage

Bridal (636.394.5858). One and a half inches taller than Bradley, she traded heels for white, silver-sequined, slip-on Sketchers tennis shoes from DSW, so she wouldn’t tower over him. THE PARTY: Guests gathered at the Heart of St. Charles Banquet Center—the same place Tiffany’s parents hosted their wedding reception 30 years ago. An in-house caterer served delicious dishes of chicken, pork tenderloin, scalloped potatoes and veggies, and St. Louis radio personality Dodie Rahlmann, owner of Celebrate Disc Jockey Service (636.928.7400), packed the dance floor. THE FLOWERS: Tiffany unleashed her penchant for the color purple into her cascading calla-lily bouquet and the hydrangea-heavy centerpiece florals from Bozzay Florist (314.965.4838).
THE RINGS: The Shane Company (314.968.9700)
soldered Tiffany’s wedding band and antiquestyle engagement ring.
THE CAKE: Simple but striking, a pearlized ribbon delicately decorated each layer of the stark-white, five-tiered wedding cake from McArthur’s Bakery (314.894.0900). SPECIAL TOUCH: ChapStick party favors
labeled with the couple’s names and a love note played off Tiffany and her father’s professions in orthodontics.

DANIEL LEE
Principal Cellist, Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra There are two sides of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra’s Daniel Lee. On one, there‘s the dedicated cellist who is inspired by Beethoven, practices five to six hours a day and performs Elgar and Shostakovich concertos in sold-out shows while wearing full dress tails. On the other is the messy former skater who listens to Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Radiohead and works a “casual, punkish” wardrobe consisting of cool tees collected on his many travels and Marc Jacobs shades. This Seattle native’s signature style once consisted of baggy jeans, a wallet chain and wild hair; today, it seems, he still longs to rebel. Whether he was so excited about his upcoming solo due to his performance or the allowance to stray from his typically required tux was somewhat unclear.

MICHAEL DRUMMOND Designer, The Exquisite Corpse
While it may have taken two decades for Michael Drummond to confidently define his true style, it was well worth the wait. Transitioning from a timid school boy who consistently buttoned his top button to a “bohemian disco ball” defined by dirt and glitter, the designer has reached a very happy medium; today, he invests in classic and edgy pieces from American Rag, statement shoes from yoox.com and hats, scarves and jewelry from H&M. While a fan of Alexander McQueen, Yohji Yamamoto and Viktor & Rolf, he admits to being too focused on his own designs (best described as intricate, “askew,” high-fashion knitwear) to know what other designers are currently doing. We’ll avoid telling him high-buttoned collars are back…
On Michael: Boss vest and pants, Calvin Klein shirt and Prada shoes available at Saks Fifth Avenue, 314.567.9200. Cap, his own. 78 ALIVE STL NOVEMber 2009

LEWIS REED
President, St. Louis Board of Aldermen As a suit is standard dress for most any politician, St. Louis Board of Aldermen President Lewis Reed–whose style icons include Martin Luther King Jr. and Rat Packers Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.–is lucky; he owns just two pairs of jeans (one blue, one black) and enjoys dressing up. Hitting Macy’s, Sam Cavato and Saks Fifth Avenue for dark suits (he owns 15), he has his shirts custom made and accessorizes with his City of St. Louis Seal cufflinks. Still, sporting Ray-Bans and managing an active Twitter account, the politico is much more progressive than one might imagine, which also fares well; fearing change is rarely a positive trait in a politician. On Pres. Reed: Loro Piana overcoat, Armani suit, Ike Behar shirt, Brioni tie and Gucci shoes available at Saks Fifth Avenue, Plaza Frontenac, 314.567.9200. JAMES BUTLER Safety, St. Louis Rams
A fact that will likely leave most women dumbfounded, St. Louis Rams Safety James Butler discovered fashion through football. First signed by the Giants in 2005, the Georgia native credits his four-year New York stay with opening his eyes to fashion, and his new teammate Ron Bartell with inspiring his “simple, yet effective” style–defined by True Religion jeans, Banana Republic tees and Nike Dunks for day and threebutton suits post-game. As for the details, he rarely leaves home without a David Yurman necklace, a Breitling watch and 2(x)ist boxer briefs. Coincidentally, he made no mention of accessorizing with a beer helmet or foam finger; men of the world, take note.

DOUG CURTIS
Founder, London Calling and Clockwork Productions “It’s come as you are,” says Doug Curtis, aka London Calling’s DJ Clockwork, of his twice-monthly London Calling hipster dance parties, where music and fashion have collided since 2006. For Curtis, that usually translates to a mix of indie rock- and ‘60s mod-style pieces picked up everywhere from thrift stores to local boutique Splash. A fan of Fred Perry, Ben Sherman, bandanas and cool concert tees, it only makes sense that the man behind the turntable–like the lead singer on a stage–is among the best-dressed in the venue. His style icon? Paul Weller of The Jam.

JEFF SMALL
News Anchor, KSDK NewsChannel 5 When it comes to fashion advice, KSDK news anchor Jeff Small has but one tip: “Don’t let the clothes make you.” Easy for someone who’s “model size” and has a face for TV. Still, the Alton native has been having fun with fashion for as long as he can remember; he was voted Best Dressed in eighth grade, spent most of his high school years finding creative ways to get around the Cardinal Ritter dress code and was tying bow ties when most were learning to tie their shoes. Today, he keeps his closet stocked with conservative and elegant suits for work, track jackets, jeans and fedoras for play. “I don’t care if it’s $50 or $5,000, if it works for me.” And, really, what wouldn’t? ERIK JOHNSON Defenseman, St. Louis Blues
Men like Erik Johnson are a rare breed. A six-foot-four athlete, for starters, he showed up fashionably on time to his Men of Style interview (wearing a Siva tee, 7 For All Mankind denim and Lacoste sneakers) and took off his game face to talk openly about fashion brands (favorites include Armani and Wet Cement tees and John Varvatos) and fashion icons (Hugh Jackman, Jamal Mayers and Matthew McConaughey). What’s more, he uttered the single statement every man should ingrain in his brain (“When shopping with a lady, let her make the decisions; it’s not worth the battle.”), and admitted to listening to Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA” to get psyched for a game. Now that’s style…

What are you doing?
140
Interviewing #STL native and Twitter creator @Jack Dorsey! Here’s the scoop. By Moira Dorsey, aka @cousinmoira Photo by Gabriela Hasbun
W
hat are you doing?” That is the question Jack Dorsey set out to answer when he created Twitter, the ever-popular social networking utility, in 2006. And answers he got; now, over five million users tweet 140-character-or-less updates on Twitter and continue to extend the useability of his invention. @Jack and his team have changed the way the world communicates. Celebs from Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk) and Yoko Ono (@yokoono) to politicos and do-gooders from Al Gore (@algore) to Lance Armstrong (@lancearmstrong) have rushed to the micro-blogging service as an unfiltered means of advocating causes, sharing content and connecting with fans (aka “followers”). But long before he created the paradigm-shifting communication tool, the 33-year-old programmer had fallen in love with cities, mapping systems, and—above all—the ways individuals interacted with (and within) both. If this sounds kind of complex, it is, and it’s something that’s fascinated Dorsey since his teenage years, growing up in the South St. Louis neighborhood of Compton Heights. As a teen, he was captivated by the streets of St. Louis and spent weekends walking “aimlessly” around Downtown and calls the city his “first love.” St. Louis recently showed Dorsey some love as well; Mayor Francis Slay proclaimed September 18 “Jack Twitter Day” when he was in town receiving Webster University’s 2009 Person of the Year Award. That day, I got to show him some love, too—it had been a while since I’d seen my cousin, and I (@cousinmoira, get it?) was stoked to get to catch up with him. Here, Jack shares his thoughts on Twitter, iPhone apps, entrepreneurship and his love for St. Louis. @AliveMagSTL: So, cousin Jack, how does it feel to be such a superstar in your hometown? @jack: It feels awesome! Great to be home. St. Louis will always be home. I feel a sense of energy when I first see the Arch as I drive down [Interstate] 44. @AliveMagSTL: Why did you settle in San Francisco? @jack: I moved to San Francisco in 1999 to start a company. The reason I moved out there was because it was a technology-focused company and it’s very easy to
update
find programmers there, easy to find people that know technology. I was fairly new to it and moved out there to learn from the giants. @AliveMagSTL: How many employees did you start with and how many do you have now? @jack: Twitter started out with myself, another engineer, my co-founder, Biz [Stone], and about six or seven people. Now, the company has 75 full-time employees. @AliveMagSTL: Take me back a little—after graduating from high school (Bishop DuBourg, 1995), you went off to Missouri University of Science and Tech. What did you set out to study? @jack: I was deciding between political science and computer science. I’ve always been fascinated by policy and politics, but I figured I could learn more if I went the computer science direction because I could actually play with policy in a tangible way. @AliveMagSTL: Your parents started their own businesses, too. How did their entrepreneurial backgrounds influence you? @jack: When my father was 19, he and his friends started a pizza restaurant [in St. Louis] called Two Nice Guys. Then he pursued an engineering career and took that to a point where he could once again start another company [MATech, specializing in mass spectrometers]. He’s had that company for over 20 years. My mom had her own coffee store [Shenandoah Coffee in Compton Heights] and a real estate practice. So their independence and desire to create something new was definitely an influence. @AliveMagSTL: How did the idea for Twitter come about? @jack: The idea came from my fascination with how cities work and my desire to understand and visualize how things flowed within them on a day-to-day basis. I got into programming because I really wanted to put a map up on the screen, then I wanted to put dots on the screen, then I wanted the dots to move around. I had all that working, but I basically just had a bunch of dots moving around on a screen; there wasn’t much to it. So I needed to figure out what the dots represented, and I looked to Manhattan for that [After college, Jack moved to New York to work as a programmer for a dispatching company]. There was all this public data about where they were and what they were doing and it was being recorded in real time. So I started hooking my dots to that information, and now I had dots that moved around and were actually meaningful. Then I had this really gorgeous mixture of how the city was working. @AliveMagSTL: What happened next? How did all these pieces of the puzzle come together? @jack The biggest thing that was missing was that my friends weren’t able to update with their locations and what they were doing. So I tried to build a system in 2000 with the first Blackberry. I was the only one I knew with the Blackberry, so
I built this little system that allowed me to email from a Blackberry to a program, then the program would email those updates to all of my friends. I found out quickly that since no one else had this system, my friends really didn’t want to know what I was doing at the time. It was just bad timing in 2000. In 2006, SMS [texting] got really big in this country and it reminded me of this idea, and the ability to be anywhere, away from a computer and report what was going on with me and also, at the same time, receive updates from my friends. That is where it came from. The first users were my co-workers. After those seven people joined, it was my parents and family. @AliveMagSTL: Now, Twitter has more than five million users. Your invention has really changed the way we communicate. Was that a goal? @jack: It was not an intention to change anything about the world, necessarily. The original intention was to go out and walk the city and share what I was doing and keep all of my friends in my pocket at the same time, so that I always felt a connection. I had no idea how far people would take it and how they would define it. That’s been the most exciting thing. @AliveMagSTL: How much of your day do you spend online? @jack: Does SMS count? @AliveMagSTL: Yes. @jack: Pretty much all day.
"START HERE, START NOW, START SMALL." @AliveMagSTL: What are your top three favorite iPhone apps? @jack: Only three? I love SMS, it allows me to reach Twitter and it just feels like a good way to communicate with people. The second? The new iPhone has a compass, so you can see where you are, but you can also see where you are pointed, which is awesome. The third is an app called Foursquare. It turns the city into a game, so you go around the city and check into places, like Ted Drewes, Starbucks. The greatest thing about it is that it makes the city more useful; it exposes what’s going on in different cities. @AliveMagSTL: What, in relation to Twitter, are you most proud of? @jack: That we created an open system that allowed people to build their own value upon it. We didn’t dictate too much of the usage; we allowed people to figure out how they wanted to use it and then built on that. It’s very hard to create a platform like that, and I think we’ve done a pretty good job. @AliveMagSTL: You’re on the cover of our Men Of Style issue. How would you describe your personal style? @jack: Rustic elegant. I wear jeans every day, usually a collared, button-up shirt and a jacket or blazer of some sort. @AliveMagSTL: Any favorite designers? @jack: There are a few. My favorite designer in the past was Issey Miyake. Also Scott Morrison (Paper Denim + Cloth, Earnest Sewn, now at Evisu). For shoes, simple, black YSL loafers. @AliveMagSTL: What kind of advice would you give other entrepreneurs? @jack: The biggest thing is to get started, right now and right where you are. It’s a big challenge. My advice is always to start as soon as you can and get that start out of the way; then you’ll know very quickly if this is something you should continue with or if its something you should close. Start here, start now, start small.

GARDEN PARTY Located in the Citygarden Downtown, The Terrace View restaurant fits perfectly within St. Louis’ newest jewel. By Cristy Miller | Photos by Liz Reiff Sloan
The patio at The Terrace View overlooks the Citygarden.
> Like the Citygarden, there’s a long list of things to love about The Terrace View. The Citygarden, which debuted Downtown in July, features three fountains and a stateof-the-art water spray plaza. The Terrace View, which opened its doors one month later, features an all-glass exterior and a cool, minimalist space. The Citygarden engages visitors with 24 large-scale, classic and abstract contemporary sculptures. The Terrace View engages—and entices— its visitors with a Mediterranean tasting menu that draws upon seasonal and local ingredients. And the Citygarden (among too many other interesting features to name here) provides stimulating entertainment with an audio tour and an LED screen displaying video art and movies, while The Terrace View offers dining with a view; the charming patio is an urban oasis that overlooks the city’s newest jewel. DINING WITH A VIEW Located on the northern edge of the garden along Chestnut Street, The Terrace View has become an attraction to both city residents and tourists in the short time it’s been open. Much like you’d find in New York’s Central Park, the restaurant offers an enchanting view coupled with sophisticated cuisine. Jim Fiala—established restaurateur and chef of The Crossing in Clayton, Liluma in the Central West End and Acero in Maplewood—delivers both with finesse. The menu is not only creative and complex, but also supports local farms. The Terrace View is open for both lunch and dinner and reservations are

recommended, but note they can only be made for inside seating, not for the prime patio space. GOOD THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES Diners looking to get more for their money won’t find any bailout plan here. Dishes are true tastingmenu style. Appetizer portions are small, often two to three bites. Entrees, while much larger, are still conservative in size—a bold decision considering the economy is still rebounding. But, as one of my fellow diners put it one evening, the food is incredible, and you’re also paying for the stunning view. I agree, and I do think The Terrace View is worth the price. I had the warm goat cheese served with pickled cauliflower florets and fresh field greens and was delighted with the freshness of both the greens and goat cheese. Acero restaurant lovers will appreciate the use of fresh pasta here, like in the tomato tagliolini made with a house-made ricotta. The Acero Gnudi is a dish that I’d order on every visit. I loved the soft gnocchi-esque pasta dumplings filled with ricotta and resting on a tomato and extra virgin olive oil sauce with guanciale. Entrees rely heavily on protein, with pork and lamb as the standouts, but there’s also a nice Missouri Rainbow Trout that’s grilled with pancetta in a Dijon-shiitake mushroom sauce. There is also a selection of grass-fed and antibiotic-free steaks, served with frites or seasonal veggie, which on one trip was crisp, well-peppered corn. And when it comes to my desserts, I need to be wowed. The options—chocolate cake, a warmed peach with a homemade cookie, lemon semifreddo—all were appealing, but it was the latter that received the most excitement. The delicious, cool, creamy custard was served hockey puck sized and left a slight hint of tartness in my mouth after each bite.

A Milestone in Midtown EXO celebrates a year of combining art, music and cuisine. By Amy De La Hunt | Photo by Liz Reiff Sloan
The open loft-like space at EXO
Last September, when the Midtown nightclub was barely two-months old, EXO hosted a party with Ludacris on Election Day, November 4, 2008. As Barack Obama sealed the presidential victory, over 1,000 people celebrated at EXO. Outside the packed club, where Ludacris was rapping from his new album, passersby on Locust craned their necks to see the LCD projection of election results from EXO’s patio onto the wall next door. “We had another couple hundred people just standing in the street,” co-owner Harry Michel recalls. A HOT CONCEPT Lucky for Michel and his business partner Fred L. Finley, their concept for EXO relies less on recreating the euphoric election experience every weekend and more on being an escape from everyday cares. It’s a lounge where music fills the air, artwork graces the walls and the aromas of soul cuisine waft from the kitchen. The two-story venue
Partygoers pack the bar at EXO in Midtown.
100 ALIVE STL november 2009
has plenty of space for dining on Southern-influenced chicken, fish, cornbread, sautéed green beans or chillin’ with a cocktail—see if you can guess the secret ingredient in the fruit-infused EXO Surprise martini. Or, dance next to the VIP area and DJ booth. A SUCCESSFUL YEAR EXO’s demographic tends to be more mature on Fridays for Timeout, followed by Breathe; while the 25-and-up clientele makes its appearance on So Sexy Saturdays. Parties pepper the calendar—the next two months bring celebrity guests on both Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve. But the owners are focusing more on smaller celebrations, like holiday parties, corporate meetings and private receptions, to make full use of the space throughout the week. They’re also planning a once-a-month supper club to show off what EXO’s kitchen can do. Michel, who’s spent 15 years with Finley in the St. Louis nightlife business, calls EXO’s first year “a nice 12-month introduction” but says one of the goals for 2010 is to publicize the club to a wider audience. “There’re still a lot of people that really aren’t aware we’re even here.” (3146 Locust St., Midtown, 314.534.1500, exostl.com).
{ Back Story }
When Harry Met Fred How this duo came to be St. Louis nightlife veterans When high-schoolers Harry Michel (De Smet Jesuit) and Fred L. Finley (Parkway West) met during a business etiquette program, they discovered common interests in “sports, girls and hanging out,” jokes Michel. Both pursued college degrees elsewhere but returned to St. Louis, their friendship morphing to a business partnership. When an urban marketing venture with Anheuser-Busch took off, Michel quit medical school—ditching a full-ride scholarship—to pursue it. In 1995 the duo bought the First Fridays franchise for Missouri and began organizing monthly events for an African-American clientele that combined socializing, networking and dancing. Ten years later, they opened an upscale nightclub, Seven. After its successful three-year run, the owners’ interest in real estate development led to new concept: a “hang suite” with art, music and cuisine. EXO opened in 2008.
