HERE’S NOTHING LIKE a little spring fashion to pull you out of your winter woes. And even though we in St. Louis still have a little ways to go before warmer weather officially kicks in, it’s the perfect time to gear up for the season with all of your favorite local designers and shops. Fashion Editor Sarah Stallmann hit the streets in search of the top trends for our Spring Fashion Issue, which boasts 20 packed pages of the looks we’re loving now—from local designer finds by Grace Kubilius and Paulie Gibson to top boutique picks from across St. Louis. Be sure to check out the 2015 Runway Report for a rundown of the must-have trends and where to find them in STL (p.76). And our Jimi Hendrix-inspired fashion editorial, “Purple Haze” (p.66), is not to be missed. Special thanks goes to Saks Fifth Avenue Marketing Director Tania Beasley-Jolly for serving as contributing creative director on the unforgettable shoot. (Rock ’n’ roll vintage, designer duds and model Alanna Arrington’s crazy-fabulous mane paired with the show-stopping backdrop of The Fox…need I say more?) We’re continuing our tribute to spring shopping this month with a brand-new event highlighting local makers and their unique wares. “Saint Louis Made: A Makers’ Pop-Up” debuts Downtown on March 12, featuring a wide selection of local makers, innovators and entrepreneurs. Log on to ALIVEMag.com for more details, and be sure to follow our Style Notes blog for updates on participating vendors. Another STL shopping mainstay was the inspiration behind this month’s cover. When we heard that Left Bank Books was hosting famed fashion photographer and reality TV star Nigel Barker for an exclusive signing of his latest book, we knew an interview was a must (read the full cover story on p.62). And, true to the Nigel Barker you’ve seen on “America’s Next Top Model” and now his new Oxygen show, “The Face,” he’s as charming and down-to-earth as you’d expect. The fashion pro’s honest, tell-it-like-it-is approach to the industry is what he’s known for—and it’s easy to see why. His latest foray into the publishing world highlights 50 of the fashion world’s most influential models in a visual synopsis that examines their impact on the world of pop culture, allowing Barker to provide his no-nonsense take on several of his passions: modeling, photography and, now, writing. From the truth about reality TV life to the best career advice he’s ALIVEMAG.COM/WEHEARTSTL ever received, we asked him just about everything. And, true to form, he gave it to us straight.

BEHIND THE ISSUE
Fresh From the Runways With the approach of spring, it’s time to cast off winter’s tired sweaters and introduce new trends to our closets with the help of our Spring 2015 Runway Report (p.76). “I love fresh spring fashion, so curating this month’s Runway Report feature was a fun way to get excited about some of the new season’s most stylish looks,” says Fashion Editor Sarah Stallmann. “We have such a great selection of runway-inspired trends in STL, why shop anywhere else?”
Let’s Do Brunch
“As brunch’s popularity grows, restaurants are more free to put their stamp on their menus and dishes,” De La Hunt says. “It’s fun to have a favorite go-to spot for a casual weekend brunch, but there’s also something to be said for shaking things up now and then.” Heading out this weekend? Make sure to tweet us @ALIVEMagSTL with #LetsDoBrunchSTL, or Instagram your brunch (you know you want to) at the same handle and hashtag. Bon appétit!
That ’70s Shoot It’s never a bad day in the fashion world when Jimi Hendrix inspires a shoot. Shot in Grand Center’s opulent Fabulous Fox Theatre, the glamourous fashion spread is all things decadent, bohemian and bell-bottomed. In other words, the perfect sartorial ode to rock ’n’ roll’s legendary superstar (p.66). “Jimi’s new biopic, this season’s 1970s styles and [me and Stallmann’s] love of Wallis Simpson inspired Jimi and Wallis’ fictious lovechild: confident, sexy, artistic, daring and an arbiter of style,” says Saks Fifth Avenue Marketing Director Tania Beasley-Jolly, the Contributing Creative Director on the shoot. “Perhaps she’s not so much a figment of my imagination but truly today’s woman.”

If you’re anything like us, brunch has a prime spot on your weekend calendar, which means our feature on p.84 is your new go-to. Whether you’re hitting the latest hotspot or searching for the perfect hair-of-the-dog to revive you, Contributing Dining Editor Amy De La Hunt lays out St. Louis’ top picks for a relaxing Saturday or Sunday morning (or, let’s be honest, early afternoon) meal.

A FRESH NEW MENU THAT YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS.
NEW MENU:
The Chase Park Plaza
212 N. Kingshighway Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63108 314.454.9000, chaseparkplaza.com/dining There’s Sunday brunch, and then there’s Sunday brunch at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel’s Eau Bistro: the hotel was the first to pioneer lavish Sunday brunches in the Midwest, and the tradition continues to live on in the Bistro’s decadent rotating menus. Patrons relax in the Bistro, perhaps starting off with a cocktail to ease into the day: champagne, mimosas, bloody marys and blood orange gin fizzes are popular selections. Next: a look at the
menu, where popular fare—waffles made to order, cheeseboards, slow-roasted carved prime rib and an over-the-top choice of handcrafted pastries—is featured alongside a dynamic selection of dishes that change weekly, depending on the season and what is available locally. Jumbo shrimp and snow crab are must-haves for those seeking something a little out-of-the-ordinary, while seasonal salads featuring unique medleys are not to be missed by those seeking fortifying greens. Of course, there’s always the eggs benedict of the week, which

revolves according to what’s fresh and flavorful. It goes without saying that the Chase Park Plaza sets the standard for the Central West End’s cherished brunch tradition: from savory— charcuteries, carvery prime rib—to sweet—freshbaked pasteries and desserts—there’s a plated luxury for every palette. And with so many decadent menu items to suit every mood and fancy, there’s reason to return time and time again.

Taubman Prestige Outlets welcomes big names like H&M and Kate Spade Saturday into its exclusive retail roster. by by by SARAH STALLMANN CHESTERFIELD’S TAUBMAN PRESTIGE OUTLETS seems to be
growing by the minute as it entices customers to head west for its eclectic mix of both outlets and regular-priced retail options, many of which are the brands’ only Missouri locations. The open-air “village” boasts an impressive 310,000 square feet of retail space making up more than 50 stores that have kept folks flocking there since the grand opening a year and a half ago. Last year, Taubman welcomed 16 new retailers, and this year is shaping up to be just as strong with fashion-forward new additions that include affordable trendsetter H&M, luxury outlet Hugo Boss Factory Store, skincare stop Forever Flawless and weekend-wear staple Kate Spade Saturday.
Kate Spade Saturday popped up in mid-February, offering up feminine and spirited clothing, shoes and accessories that highlight the easygoing spirit of the weekend. The first in the region, the store carries signature items such as sassy separates, flirty party dresses and a selection of on-the-job suiting that can easily take you from the boardroom to the bar. This month, Taubman welcomes the 3,002-square-foot Hugo Boss Factory Store, housing outlet exclusives and past-season finds at a fraction of the price, followed by Forever Flawless—one of the top producers of spa-quality skincare—set to open later this spring. 26

Go With the Faux
A St. Louis designer elevates faux leather with the debut of Fauxgerty. by SARAH STALLMANN PASSIONATE ABOUT dispelling
the myth that faux leather clothing is second-best to the real thing, St. Louis native Chrissy Fogerty decided to launch Fauxgerty to create a sleek, vegan update to the modern motorcycle jacket. She took the design reins and brought on graphic artist Meg Ebaugh-Faris, and the two combined their skills in art and fashion to produce Fauxgerty’s first collection of vegan leather jackets, which debuted last November.
The fashion venture aims to revise common faux-leather perceptions by infusing their line with quality and design details that stand out from its counterparts. She concentrated on perfecting the elevated design of the vegan motorcycle-jacket-that-could by ensuring that each piece is crafted from the finest faux—designed locally and hand-sewn in New York. Her first collection launched Nov. 21 at Bissinger’s in the Central West End. Attended by St. Louis notables and editors, the event showcased “The Primary Collection.” Not just a play on words, the title collection also displays an intellectual approach to design, incorporating both creativity and deconstructed femininity with an emphasis on representing human emotions by deliberately selecting colors. The most basic color spectrum is
where Fauxgerty’s story begins. Black is classic and mysterious; blue is both somber and peaceful; red implies passion and courage. Fogerty’s collection expands with gray, which stands for safety and stability, while mustard represents spontaneity and optimism. Even the smallest details are taken into account: The linear-patterned lining was carefully designed and then sourced to a screen printer that shared Fauxgerty’s quality standard. “Primary” is embossed in Morse code on the upper right shoulder of each jacket—a unique brand signifier that creatively authenticates each piece. The result is an intellectual and ethically conscious view of a not-so-basic wardrobe necessity. Fogerty and Ebaugh-Faris are planning to release another collection of vegan jackets later this year in a new style before expanding their collection to include other garments. But first—and fresh up for spring 2015—is another twist on the classic: Ebaugh-Faris will be applying her own artistic talent by hand-painting art directly on Fauxgerty’s jackets. The Fauxgerty line is available for purchase on fauxgerty.com.

Cantina Laredo
Beyond the Burrito
When it comes to the flavors of our neighbors to the south, St. Louisans have moved well beyond Tex-Mex and chain taquerias. Meet four new concepts approaching the cuisine in fresh ways. by AMY DE LA HUNT
UNO

TRES
CUATRO
Fried tortillas stuffed with ground beef, tomato, lettuce and cheese are a staple in Mexican-American-meets-Midwestern cuisine, and these crunchy crave-ables are exactly why cars are lining up at Fort Taco’s drive-thru. Sauce-less enchiladas are its other main draw, but look for tamales and other goodies soon (8106 Manchester Road, 314.647.2391).
For a perfect example of Lücha’s “Mexican soul food,” owner Hugo Perez suggests sampling the pozole, a rich pork and hominy stew. But as you work your way through the menu to find your own favorites, he also recommends the brisket, the pork belly taco and the two lamb tacos, each flavored with different chiles (522 N. Grand Blvd., 314.833.9993).
The “Mexico City-style” food concept has made Cantina Laredo successful from London to Las Vegas. The menu features grilled or braised meat with complex sauces. An example? The camarones escondidos: shrimp “hidden” inside a chicken breast that’s topped with sautéed spinach and chipotle-wine sauce (7710 Forsyth Blvd., 314.725.2447).
A wood-fired oven is the main method of cooking at Público. Simple, yes, but owner Mike Randolph proved he knows high-end Mexican a while back with Medianoche. His newly opened tavern-style eatery has a crudo menu, snacks, flatbreads, tacos and, making good use of the fire, plenty of grilled meats (6679 Delmar Blvd., The Loop).

The Sounds of Music A symphony of fine instruments debuts at Link Auction Galleries. by KRYSTIN ARNESON In a game-changing move for the Midwest, Link Auction Galleries will debut a fine instrument auction on March 14. Typically, musicians and collectors have to venture to Chicago’s dealers, and virtually no auctions—a common way to purchase this caliber of instrument— exist outside the East Coast or Europe. Yet, the Midwest has no shortage of leading symphonies—Cleveland and Chicago are ranked among the top 20 in the world, while discussions of top US symphonies are incomplete without mention of St. Louis’ own.
have been crafted since the 1600s in Mittenwald, Germany. This violin was made by one of the first Klotz luthiers, Matthias, who studied under Amati. Potential buyers at Link can try a test scale or two in the gallery’s acoustically ideal space to get a feel for how the sound would resonate in a concert hall. Best of all, prices are reasonable for a professional musician—especially at auction: A Christie’s auction in 2012 estimated a similar Klotz at $1,500-$2,500, and it sold for $938 on the block. AN “INTRIGUING CELLO,” POSSIBLY
To rectify this imbalance is Link Auction Galleries’ Director of Musical Instruments, Emily Lane, who searched far and wide across the region to bring back instruments worthy of the Midwest’s musicians—even scoring a 17th century Guarneri, “a real showstopper” of a violin, from France (Guarneri and Stradivari—that Stradivari—were students of the first modern violin maker, Amati, in Cremona, Italy). It’s not just the name on the instrument that makes it special, but the generations of musicians who have played its strings, rubbed oil into the wood and carefully repaired it so that its sound could live on—and the stories that come with those years. KLOTZ VIOLIN, C. 1673, PRIVATE COLLECTION
A “player’s instrument,” Klotz violins
RUGGIERI, MID-18TH CENTURY, PRIVATE COLLECTION
Lane, a cello player herself, doesn’t quite know what to make of this instrument, but “there’s some kind of special aura to it,” she says. There’s also a bit of a mystery: “It has a Ruggieri label on it, but we don’t think it’s Ruggieri,” Lane says. Instead, she thinks it might be from Vienna, as opposed to the Ruggieri’s Cremona. Whatever the origin, it’s distinctive for its rich appearance and full sound, copycat characteristics of Ruggieri instruments—and also for its smaller-than-average size. Formerly a career instrument of a Metropolitan Opera musician, it was one of the first pieces she picked up for the auction. “I think it’s a sleeper instrument—you get the right eyes on it, someone’s going to jump on it,” Lane says.

Making Connections
Gladitood aims to connect the adventurous with goodwill projects around the world. Cofounder Ryan Brennell explains. by KRYSTIN ARNESON WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START THE COMPANY? In 2011, I was living in New
Zealand and took a trip to Samoa with some friends. On our second night, there was a tsunami warning, which was taken very seriously. We evacuated from our beach huts and climbed to the community safe house where we were welcomed into community leaders’ homes as family. People slept outside on the tombs of loved ones lost in a devastating tsunami two years prior, just to be close to them. We also learned that they were still trying to rebuild, and progress had been hindered because they hadn’t received the proper aid. We spent the rest of our time helping however we could. At the end of our trip, we left with a family in Samoa.
This trip had such an impact on me that when I got home, I started looking for opportunities to volunteer abroad. They were both difficult to find and too expensive. Our desire to do good was being capitalized on by opportunists with ill intentions. In most cases, it’s an agency charging thousands of dollars to volunteer in a community that doesn’t need the help of volunteers or hasn’t asked for it. I created Gladitood to solve two problems: I want communities all around the world to have access to the funding they need, and I want to flip the voluntourism market on its head, eliminating opportunist agencies that charge thousands and instead highlight meaningful, affordable volunteer opportunities. WHAT’S YOUR BUSINESS MODEL? Our platform for humanitarian and con32

servation projects is completely free, and it’s free to sign up for opportunities. We keep our lights on by applying a 5 percent fee to all money raised on Gladitood. WHAT’S YOUR TRAJECTORY? In May 2014, Andrew Baur, formerly of Southwest Bank, joined our team as CFO. Funding he helped us acquire propelled us to launch our first projects in September. International Peace Initiatives surpassed its $14,000 funding goal and is using the money to help Kenyan women and children affected by HIV/AIDS by setting up a beauty shop training program to provide women with sustainable life skills and sex education. This month, we’re running a project that supports St. Louis-based Solea Water and is centered on a World Water Day event on March 21. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU WOULD HAVE KNOWN BEFORE STARTING? I
think there’s a real advantage in only seeing a couple steps ahead of you in the beginning. You take those first steps, and then you see the next couple and take those. Before you know it, you can look behind you and see for miles.
WHERE DO YOU SEE THE COMPANY IN FIVE YEARS? Gladitood will have
helped to feed thousands of children, empower thousands of women, bring clean water to global communities, save endangered species and clean up oceans. We’ll have broadened our perspectives with a family scattered around the globe and have spread a whole new idea of what it really means to travel. PHOTO BY ATTILIO D’AGOSTINO

St. Louis’ inspiring women aren’t so “secret” Metro Theater Company creates “Secret Society” to honor inspirational women
The Metro Theater Company’s production of “Afflicted: Daughters of Salem” opens at the Missouri History Museum on Friday, March 6. Throughout the three-week run, nine women will be inducted into a “Secret Society of Inspiring Women” spotlighting St. Louis women whose lives inspire others. In “Afflicted: Daughters of Salem”, playwright Laurie Brooks imagines the lives of the teenage girls who became the accusers in the Salem Witch Trials, which resulted in 20 executions, mostly of women. She depicts young people who are full of potential but have neither outlet for expression nor opportunity for their own future. They can only claim power through gossip, creating a “secret society” that meets in the forbidden woods and forcing the slave Tituba to teach them “magic.” When caught, they feign possession and blame “witches.” “The girls in ‘Afflicted’ create their secret society because they have no hope and one to inspire them,” said Matt Neufeld, Managing Director of Metro Theater Company. “So we decided to honor women who inspire girls today by creating a ‘Secret Society’ we hope will be anything but secret. We have seen that when young people have no hope and no feeling of control over their futures, the result can be disastrous. If the daughters of Salem had had one inspiring role model, perhaps history would have played out differently. Fortunately, St. Louis has many inspiring women young people can look to: these are great role models who are invested in our community,” Neufeld said. A different inspiring woman will be honored at each weekend performance and inducted into The Secret Society of Inspiring Women. Whether household names or working diligently under the radar, these women are names you should know. For example: Dr. Robyn Wiens is the founding principal of Hawthorn Leadership School for Girls, St. Louis’ first single-sex charter school and opening this year. Driven by rigorous, college-prep STEM curricula, the school will ultimately enroll 500 girls in grades 6-12 by 2020. St. Louis is already a leader in STEM with a growing biotech and IT presence, and Wiens and her young scholars will make sure that women lead the charge in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Elizabeth Tucker is known around town as a serial entrepreneur: She’s ALIVE’s publisher and cofounder, cofounder of Saint Louis Fashion Week and the recent cofounder of the Saint Louis Fashion Fund. As publisher of ALIVE, she has driven its growth from an eight-page newsletter in 2002 to a successful lifestyle media group. Over the years, Elizabeth has also served as a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters and provided professional guidance for countless interns who have launched their careers with ALIVE. Dr. Amanda Luckett Murphy, former President/CEO of Hopewell Center, founded the Center with the goal of removing the stigma of mental illness and of stopping discrimination against those affected by it. The Center raises awareness about mental health issues, including labeling and stereotyping, prevents mental illness when possible and works to enact positive change in the community. Although Murphy retired in 2010, she continues to have a strong impact on the center and the community touched by it. Join Metro Theater Company at a weekend performance of Afflicted as each of these honorees are inducted into St. Louis’ very own...

MEET THE MEAN GIRLS OF SALEM Deep in the woods of Puritan New England, a clique of teenage girls make decisions that result in 20 executions, making them the most hated girls in history. Metro Theater Company and the Missouri History Museum present “Afflicted: Daughters of Salem,” a play inspired by the girls who forever established the legacy of Salem. In the tradition of the hit feature film “Mean Girls” and the popular television series “Pretty Little Liars,” the play looks inside teen politics where allies are found, power is taken and promises are made—and broken. Following each performance, the audience becomes part of the play as they decide whether or not the girls can be forgiven for their acts. Best for adults and ages 10 and up.

The “In” Tribe A new season calls for a fresh update to spring’s ever-popular safari. written and styled by SARAH STALLMANN PERENNIALLY A FIXTURE of spring wardrobes, the tribal
trend is back for 2015. This season, though, it’s better than ever, marching to a fresh beat that includes a more refined color palette and fringed details to boot. Designers like Zac Posen and Diane von Fürstenberg have given the style a new spin on the runway, inspiring trendsetters down the line to take notice. Countering the usual busy patterns and Santa Fe-style prints, this spring’s selection of graphics have taken a softer turn: Ikat and batik are boasting brights in simpler patterns, and threaded tassels have replaced fall’s heavy leather fringe. Even embellishments have taken the update in stride, showcasing ornamentation that includes beading, feathers and embroidery. Be still your boho heart—this trend is here to stay.

THIS SPRING SEASON is sure to bring out your
freshest face yet, with a cool crop of makeup shades that bring your beauty routine back to the basics. Take it from the runways of New York and London: Prabal Gurung showcased a nearly bare face highlighted with the palest pink; faded berry lids took over at Derek Lam; and the flushed cheeks at Thakoon really made a statement. While lip colors are rich and matte (see NYX’s new collection of matte liquids), skin is dewy and soft, bringing us back to the “no-makeup makeup” era of the ’90s and the birth of androgynous minimalism. Just add a bit of tinted moisturizer and finish off with a stroke of perfect pink blush. For the lids, a dab of color will do, preferably in a vibrant pastel hue with a punch of sparkle and shimmer. Now get glowing!

MY STYLE
Grace Kubilius Craft Alliance Fiber Artist-in-Residence
What are you wearing today? The shirt and necklaces are from my collection (available at Skif), pants and button-down from Gap and the boots are Chaps. Describe your personal style. It usually looks something like a 9-year-old boy. I am almost always dressed for working in my studio. In what ways do art and fashion go hand-in-hand in both your career and your wardrobe? My work reflects my interest in the intersection of fashion/ costume, sculpture and performance. I am drawn to interesting shapes and textures in both my work and my personal wardrobe. I prefer to keep the focus on what I’m making, so in dressing myself, I keep it lowkey. I need to be able to get messy and move around. What inspires you most when you are creating your wearable art pieces? The material, always. I deconstruct and reconstruct new and found materials. The process can either be very repetitive or immediate and reactionary, allowing me to create problems and solve them. My work deals with gender, identity, trauma and ugliness. What item from your closet can you not live without? I don’t get too attached to clothing. There’s no item I care too much about—it’s all replaceable. What is your go-to piece? It changes. I get really into something and buy multiples. I end up wearing it out in a month and move on to a new go-to. Most recently it was quilted sweatshirts. Who are some of your favorite designers? In the avant-garde category, I love Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garçons, Creatures of the Wind, Thom Browne and Maison Martin Margiela. For wearabilty, I really like STATE, Electric Feathers, Hackwith Design House, Ace & Jig, Elizabeth Suzann and Study NY—I’m a big fan of their zero-waste policy. Where do you shop in STL? Goodwill and Skif International. I also really like The Clover, Fable & Lore and Michael Drummond. STL has so many great local makers. What is your biggest fashion pet peeve? Focusing on what’s “flattering.” Clothing can show off what you love about your body and downplay your insecurities, but it’s also important to consider interesting fabrics, textures and how things are made. What if we let the garment transcend the body? What advice would you give to someone who is looking to find a way to express themselves through their personal style? I think people should do what makes them happy. The way you dress yourself can say a lot about you, but it doesn’t need to define you. Be comfortable. - INTERVIEW BY SARAH STALLMANN

Recently Ringed
Two newly engaged St. Louis couples share their love stories.
Micaela Land, 26 & Mike Hasenmueller, 27 Occupations: I am a product merchandiser at Roman Jewelry Company, and Mike is team leader at Swank Motion Pictures. First Sight: The first time I saw Mike was walking on the University of Missouri-Columbia’s campus. Little did I know the cute guy I noticed would later be my husband! First Date: Mike wanted to see the horror film “Saw” and invited me. I hate scary movies and would always say no under a different circumstance, but I really liked him and was so excited to go. Our Relationship: Mike and I have been dating for more than six years—since our junior year of college. The Proposal: Nov. 24, 2013 was a wonderful evening with all our favorite things: Chinese takeout, drinks, “Elf ” and family at our apartment. Decorating the Christmas tree turned into an even more amazing evening with a proposal! I had no clue it was coming. Mike had mentioned looking at rings together, but since we hadn’t looked yet, I wasn’t
expecting anything. When he proposed with my dream ring, I was floored. Together, We Like To: Spend time seeing the latest movies, going to concerts, taking weekend trips to visit friends and binge-watching TV series. Ideal St. Louis Date Night: Our ideal STL date is shopping and dinner in the Delmar Loop, then heading to a concert at the Pageant to end the night with music and friends. Our Quirky Relationship: Mike’s “Bachelor” and “Bachelorette” knowledge is growing with each season. Of course, this is a compromise for when football season starts. Three Words That Describe Us: Meaningful, silly and honest. Future Plans: St. Louis will always be our home! We love it here and plan to raise our family here. The Big Day: May 16, 2015, with a ceremony at Messiah Lutheran Church and a reception at Peabody Opera House.
Occupations: I am a senior operations analyst III at Corizon Health, and Tyler is an operations specialist for Shop ’n Save’s meat departments. The Proposal: Tyler proposed on Oct. 13, 2012 (my father’s birthday) at Carlyle Lake on the spot that Tyler’s father used to always camp at. I’m very close to my father, and Tyler’s father passed away about eight months after we became a couple. It’s a missing piece in the growth of our relationship. First Sight: I met Tyler’s mother in fall 2008 at a weekly networking group. Each week after, she tried to get me to meet her son. On Dec. 5, 2008, we met at Houlihan’s for a business lunch, and she called him to pester him to come up. As he sat down, his mother said she was late for a meeting and walked out. We went on our first date a week later. Our Unique Love: Tyler has worked in grocery store meat departments for more than 15 years. I’ve been a vegetarian for more than 16 years and was a card-carrying PETA member when we met. Future Plans: We bought a shortsale home in Shiloh, IL, in late 2011, and we continue to work on remodeling it and making it our dream home. The Big Day: May 15, 2015, with a ceremony at The Fabulous Fox Theatre, followed by a reception at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch.

Rain and Shine
Almost spoiled by a downpour, Grace and Dan’s Missouri Botanical Garden wedding blossomed into a picture-perfect day. by KRYSTIN ARNESON THEIR STORY It’s one thing to fall in love with “Wicked: The Musical,” but it’s quite another to fall in love during it. Such was the case with Grace and Dan. The University of Chicago students were good friends as they took their seats, but after the encore, they walked out of the theater holding hands—and everything had changed. “Neither of us wanted to let go, so we ended up walking for a few hours until late in the night—and the rest is history,” says Grace.

MARCH 2015
The couple dated for six years, three of them spent between Chicago and NYC. Then, Grace moved to pursue a Ph.D. in psychology at Wash U. “Those were some tough three years,” Grace says. “But after a year in St. Louis, we knew we wanted to be together despite the distance.” Despite careful planning, the proposal didn’t quite go off as planned: Dan had planned a beautiful moment on Chicago’s Navy Pier on
New Year’s Eve with fireworks exploding in the background. But due to an unexpected injury, Grace pushed her trip north up by a week. Dan stuck with his plan, coming up with a “silly excuse” to set up a camera on the pier (despite an absence of fireworks) to pop the question as the camera filmed the couple. After laughing for a “full minute” in front of Dan—who was not only nervous but now very confused— Grace gave him her answer. PHOTOS BY OLDANI PHOTOGRAPHY

AUGUST SHOWERS… “Natural, romantic and classic” was the order
of the day. Grace had always imagined a summer garden wedding, with plenty of green spaces where guests could bask in the evening’s glow. They found the perfect setting at the Missouri Botanical Garden, where a spot was open for Aug. 16. “The gardens are so classic and beautiful by themselves,” says Dan. But rain poured down all morning, and the couple had no backup plan. As the bridal party dressed at Chase Park Plaza and the groom got ready at best man Tony’s place, both parties kept an eye on the Doppler radar and prayed. Luckily, the sun came out just in time. The groom and his party, in their Hugo Boss and Vera Wang tuxes, respectively, looked picture-perfect in the classically elegant Gladney Rose Garden setting. Grace’s bridesmaid, Kei, led the bridal party in matching, pale pink BHLDN gowns, while Dan’s older sister, musician Angela Park, performed as part of a cello trio among the Gladney Rose Garden’s fragrant blooms—a wedding gift for the couple. “I remember the walk being so long, and it felt like time stretched for hours until I was standing in front of Dan and knowing, ‘This is it,’” says Grace, who wore a belted Liancarlo sample-sale find from Fleur de Lis. Grace’s younger brother did the first scripture reading, Colossians 3:12-4, in English, followed by Dan’s sister, Helen, who read in Korean to an audience including both mothers in their traditional hanboks in shimmering pastels. Dan’s roommate, also named Dan and, happily, a pastor, officiated the ceremony—even translating it into Korean for the couple’s families. …AND WEDDING FLOWERS After the ceremony, the couple’s almost
80 guests, most of whom had traveled from out of town, gathered at Spink Pavilion. Grace says that greeting all of them and taking photos was her favorite part of the big day. The naturally elegant interior of the LEED-certified space was enhanced by Les Bouquets’ floral arrangements: romantic garden and spray roses with soft eucalyptus and Queen Anne’s lace. Everyone enjoyed the field greens and braised short ribs from Catering St. Louis, finished off by The Cakery Bakery’s chocolate cake topped with mocha icing. When the speeches commenced, “Tony really touched us with how I was finally where I belonged: next to Grace after all this time, and that she was where home would always be for me,” Dan says. The couple’s first dance? An acoustic version of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.” “Our parents thought it was a nice slow song, but a couple of our friends got the reference,” Grace says. “The lyrics are actually very romantic and nice: The whole point of the song is pledging to never give up on the other person—a perfect wedding song, we say! And we got a little shared joke in the end.”

Premier Dermatology
What We’re Known For: Premier Dermatology provides a full spectrum of dermatological care in a comfortable office with a friendly and highly-skilled staff. We strive to see patients in a timely and efficient manner, always making room for the dermatologic emergency–even for new patients. We now have a second office location in Kirkwood with an additional board certified dermatologist, Craig Spenner, M.D. Our very personable and experienced physician assistant, Christine Edwards, provides further flexibility in accommodating the high demand for dermatologic care.
Our Specialties: We specialize in general dermatology for adults and children, as well as full-service cosmetic dermatology for those looking to improve and enhance the look and health of their skin. Our medical aesthetician on staff is available for detailed skin care consultations and treatments. Additionally, we offer comprehensive skin cancer evaluation with full body skin exams and skin cancer treatment including Mohs Surgery, a microscopically controlled procedure used to treat common forms of skin cancer.
Expert Advice: Sun protection and avoidance. We all know that skin cancer is directly related to ultraviolet exposure from the sun and from tanning beds. We also know how difficult it is to pass along this message to our children. It is not enough to warn them of the dangers and instruct them on protective measures to minimize their risk of skin cancer. We must lead by example. Parents themselves, need to model safe sun practices by using proper sun protection and avoidance and staying away from tanning beds.

FASHION’S JACK-OF-ALL-TRADES NIGEL BARKER TALKS FAME, FAMILY AND THE ADDICTING WORLD OF REALITY TV.
BY SARAH STALLMANN | PHOTO BY ZEV_SCHMITZ
ALIVE: What was it like to transition from 18 seasons on “America’s Next Top Model” to hosting “The Face”? Nigel Barker: For most of my time on “America’s Next Top Model,” I wasn’t really hosting—I was a judge and a photographer for a lot of the shoots. Some people I knew asked me why I would host if I’m a photographer, and I’m thinking, “Why shouldn’t I host?” It’s another thing I can try to do. I don’t want to be defined by one thing. When “Top Model” came to an end for me after season 18, I got a call from the guys at Oxygen a week later. They asked me if I wanted to host a show with Naomi Campbell, Coco Rocha and Karolína Kurková. I was very lucky because after coming off of “Top Model” for such a long time, I was able to dive right into another show of a very similar ilk. ALIVE: Reality TV can tend to have its own version of “reality.” Do you think the shows have portrayed you accurately as a person? NB: Yeah, I do. For me, that’s who I am. I feel like one of the reasons “America’s Next Top Model” was and has been such a success is because everyone on the show acts like themselves. I think as soon as people start to act or perform a character, the lack of authenticity shines through, and then people tune it out. I was lucky to be on a show like “Top Model” because a lot of the quirky craziness that makes good reality TV was played by other characters on the show. I was left to be the straight guy in the scene who was the voice of reason and down-to-earth, which was perfect for me. I didn’t want to be over-exaggerated or over-aggressive because it just isn’t my nature.

or more than 20 years, photographer, reality TV host and author Nigel Barker has played it straight in the whimsical world of fashion (ask anyone in the industry: it’s no easy task). And there’s no arguing that the fashion pro’s down-to-earth mentality and tell-it-like-it-is approach have served him well. What began as an “on a whim” dip into the fashion world as a model in the late ’80s has led to countless career highlights, including photography gigs with international publications such as Numéro Russia, GQ and Interview starring top models—among them Coco Rocha and Naomi Campbell—in addition to his now 13-year foray into reality TV’s dramatic highs and lows. And Barker’s ever evolving career isn’t about to

slow down now. Fresh off an impressive 18-season run as a judge and photographer on Tyra Bank’s “America’s Next Top Model,” Barker is channeling his expertise for several ventures that include hosting yet another hit show, Oxygen’s “The Face” (also starring Naomi Campbell), and releasing a new book, “Models of Influence,” which will bring the fashion maestro to St. Louis on March 11 for an event with Left Bank Books. The book, Barker’s second, highlights 50 of recent history’s most influential models in a visual synopsis that examines their impact on the world of pop culture. The effect is a stunning retrospective that allows Barker to provide his no-nonsense take on several of his passions: modeling, photography and writing. Which begs the question: Is there anything he can’t do?
ALIVE: Your newest book, “Models of Influence,” was released last month. Can you tell ALIVE a little bit about the book and why you decided to create this visual representation of modeling? NB: The concept of writing is another creative process that I love. Four years ago, I wrote my first book, “Beauty Equation,” and I wanted to do something very different. This [new] book talks about 50 of the most extraordinary women who’ve worked in the fashion business as models who not only defined an era but shaped generations. The book takes us through time, from the 1940s to now, and highlights 50 of the women who were the primary influences during that era and the first to accomplish various things—such as Naomi Sims, who was the first black woman to appear on the cover of a magazine. ALIVE: The book contains some beautiful, iconic images. What were your criteria for selecting the photographs? NB: It was very tough. I worked with a wonderful photo editor from Allure magazine. She and I pulled through archives, Getty Images and personally called photographers from Peter Lindbergh to Mario Testino. All in all, there’s an incredible list of photographers’ work in the book. We wanted to find pictures that spoke of the transitional moment where they transcended fashion and became pop culture icons. There are also a lot of pictures in the book that were never published before, which is really fun.
ALIVE: You’ve obviously researched a lot of these modeling eras and you’ve personally experienced a few of them as well. Do you have a favorite? NB: Selfishly, I think it’s probably my own. That late ’80s, early ’90s period where we transitioned from supermodels all the way to “heroin chic” was such an explosive moment in fashion. High fashion was in high demand in a way that it had never been before. Models were in music videos, fashion photographers were shooting the music videos, everything was super sexy. It was a very electric time. Then, there was a drastic change with the world’s recession. All of the models were completely flat-chested and super skinny. Although it wasn’t good for health reasons, it did speak a lot to the authenticity and rawness that the world was asking for at the time. ALIVE: You have two children, Jack and Jasmine. How do balance being a father and managing a very busy career? NB: I try my hardest. I try to involve them in everything I do. My wife runs my studio, so she’s very involved in my career. I always come home in between trips as much as I can. When I have days off, I try to take and pick them up from school and spend as much time with them as possible. I feel that a lot of it is about compartmentalizing. When I’m working, I’m working really hard, and when I’m playing with my kids, I’m completely focused on what they’re doing. ALIVE: Is there a piece of advice that you’ve received during your career that has really stuck with you? NB: I think the most important thing that came from my grandmother was that you have to be your own judge. You have to know when you’ve got it right. You can’t rely on other people to tell you that you’ve done a good job. As a photographer and as an artist, when you take a picture and you think you’ve got it, you have to know you’ve got it. Ultimately, you have to like it—otherwise no one else will. ALIVE: You’re dabbling in a lot of things in addition to your book. Is there something you’re most looking forward to in 2015? NB: I’m working on a few new TV program ideas that I’m really excited about. I can’t say too much about them other than they’re very interesting formats that are in development. Hopefully if things work out, you’ll see a new show in 2015 or early 2016. Left Bank Books presents Models of Influence at 7pm on March 11 at Boo Cat Club. The $45 tickets include one copy of the book, with the chance to have it signed, and are available at left-bank.com/ barker. $50 includes one copy of the book and two tickets to the event.

NEWBIES Rooster
Tower Grove South, 314.772.3447
When he added a second location of his popular downtown crêperie, owner Dave Bailey expanded everything. There’s more room (seating for 160, plus a patio), more drinks (including craft beers on tap) and more meals (a full dinner menu in addition to brunch all day). Savory crêpes are still the trademark—and really there’s no better way to get your blood pumping than with a spiced black bean crêpe and a michelada, a combination of Urban Chestnut’s Zwickel and sangrita (orange and lime juices, pomegranate and chiles). Even better, everything is made by Bailey’s team, from the ketchup to charcuterie. •Don’t Forget to Try: Known for sweets, Piccione Pastry proves its versatility with a savory weekend brunch (The Loop, 314.932.1355). Whitebox Eatery thinks outside the box with corn griddle cakes, breakfast salads and roasted pear oatmeal (Clayton, 314.862.2802). Meanwhile, Migas—scrambled eggs full of chorizo and other goodies—spice up the morning at Atomic Cowboy (The Grove, 314.775.0775).

Gamlin Whiskey House Central West End, 314.815.9500
We’re not saying rolling out of bed will be easy, but Gamlin’s Whiskey in the Morning cocktail will revive you. The magic potion: vitamin C (orange juice and lemon), strong spirits (Seagram’s 7 whiskey) and bubbles. But if all else fails, there’s The Hangover, with the perfect ratio of umami to spice to carbs: fried egg, Canadian bacon, maple bacon, turkey, cheddar cheese, American cheese, jalapeño cheddar, Cajun mayo and beer bread. •Hangover Cure Part Deux: Ask the Dressel's bartender for two things: the stockpot of the day and a custom hangover cure (CWE, 314.361.1060). Molly’s oyster shooters break down the cure for what ails you into manageable shots (Soulard, 314.241.6200). And, there’s nothing wrong with washing down Benton Park Cafe’s breakfast pizza with a beer. Bonus: Extra espresso shots are only 59 cents (Benton Park, 314.771.7200).

The most famous person at Corvid’s Cafe is Dr. Dan the Pancake Man for his artistic animals, celebrities and cartoon characters, but the chefs behind the brunch buffet and waffle bar are pretty talented, too (South City, 314.481.1522). With 8,000 feet of space, Lucas Park Grille is a sure bet for groups. With cinnamon-raisin French toast, it’s a good bet for kids, too (Downtown, 314.241.7770).

BRUNCH OUTSIDE THE BOX Scottish Arms
Central West End, 314.535.0551
If the threat of haggis is keeping you away from this brunch, never fear—there’s nary a sheep’s lung to be found. Instead, it’s stick-to-your-ribs fare seasoned with a hefty dose of history, starting with the owner’s 100-year-old family recipe for gravy. There’s also a traditional Scottish breakfast plate (house-made sausage, grilled tomatoes, baked beans, mushrooms, toast, eggs and bacon) or the sausage-wrapped Scotch egg as part of a platter purported to cure hangovers. The whiskey selection, naturally, is extensive. Even the house Bloody Mary mix is peat-smoked for good measure.
•Walk on the Wild Side: Aya Sofia’s Turkish breakfast is an authentic sweet-savory-salty surprise (St. Louis Hills, 314.645.9919). Start the morning with 3 Cs—chiles, chorizo and cheese—at Southwest Diner (Ellendale, 314.260.7244). Sure bets at Katie’s Pizza and Pasta: the smoked salmon pizza with goat cheese and arugula; pistachio cinnamon rolls or the signature fiori noodle with spicy arrabiatta sauce (Rock Hill, 314.942.6555). FAN FAVORITES Brasserie by Niche
Central West End, 314.454.0600
How does this perennial winner stay atop virtually every “best of” brunch list? With simple, classic dishes featuring perfectly prepped ingredients. Each one could stand on its own—the roasted chicken in the quiche, the ham in the croque madame, the lemon curd with the brioche French toast—but when assembled on the plate, they have a special synergy. The restau88

rant got its start thanks to owner Gerard Craft’s love of French-style brasseries, and he’s too savvy to mess with a winning recipe. But the wines could be an exception. There’s a new sommelier at the Niche Food Group, and it’s worth asking what new bottles of bubbly he’s putting on Brasserie’s list. •More to Love: Browse the store and nab a
table for the quiche when you can, because Winslow’s Home is always hopping (U City 314.725.7559). Come for the specialty coffee, but stay for Half & Half’s salmon hash (Clayton, 314.725.0719). Café Osage sources ingredients as local as it gets: across the street (CWE, 314.454.6868).
SWEET SPOTS
From apple pie pancakes to Nutella crepes, Scape is almost guaranteed to satisfy a sugar craving (CWE, 314.361.7227). Next door is similarly sweet at Crêpes Etc., where our main squeeze is a tie between the malted waffle, frosted pastry or fivelayer-high lemon meringue crepe (CWE, 314.367.2200). With more than 20 fruit, chocolate and dessert crêpes on the menu, City Coffeehouse & Crêperie has more sweet ways to fill the delicious delicacy than anyone else in the city (Clayton, 314.862.2489). And if brunch to you is just a precursor to dessert, Cyrano’s is your kind of place (314.963.3232, Webster Groves).

A couple years ago, the longtime owner of Atlas penned a tribute to Julia Child, in which he talked about the culinary legend’s respect, generosity, craftsmanship and appreciation of food. “When I cook with those four virtues [in mind],” he wrote, “my skills are sharper, the food is better and my guests and I are happier.” continued on p.94

At Avenue, Carr’s philosophy comes through in the classic, fuss-free dishes and the relaxed atmosphere. You get the sense that serving up three meals a day every day is a joy rather than a challenge at this new Clayton restaurant. BREAKFAST & BRUNCH
Avenue opens weekdays at 7am, when many of us are either grabbing a granola bar on the way out the door or snagging something at the drive-thru. A slice of Avenue’s quiche of the day is well worth skipping the snooze button— the spinach-and-feta version is delightfully light and fluffy. The Eggs Avenue is another winning dish: perfectly poached orbs atop a tower of bacon, spinach and tomato. The cheddar grits cakes are a delightful surprise, too. The flavor is sweeter than expected, and the texture is cakelike, good for soaking up the yolks. For about the same price as drive-thru fare (and far superior quality), Avenue offers hearty, healthy options like oatmeal with apples and raisins, yogurt parfaits and granola. Or there’s a breakfast sandwich with scrambled eggs, bacon, tomato, lettuce and cheddar. The price point rises a bit for all of these at brunch, and the offerings expand to include ham-and-egg crêpes, huevos rancheros and Avenue’s trademark blueberry-lemon pancakes. Avenue’s bar stays busy during brunch turning out classic cocktails—bloody Marys and mimosas, of course, but also sidecars, Sazeracs and Negronis. These pair better with the lunch options than the eggs, though nobody bats an eye at an early hair-ofthe-dog request either. LUNCH & DINNER It’s the little details in many of the salads that make them a winning order. The chopped chicken salad with cucumber, tomato, feta and arugula has chickpeas for texture; the sirloin and spinach salad gets extra umami from caramelized onions. And kale, that love-it-or-hate-it leaf, is excellent with farro, roasted apples, sugar snap peas and walnuts.
Soups and sandwiches, on the other hand, are pure comfort food, starting with the spot-on French onion soup. Only a couple of pasta dishes make the cut for lunch, but they’re more plentiful at dinner. In particular, the fresh fettuccine with lamb, red wine, garlic and mint is a blend of familiar flavors. Those who dined at Pomme, the restaurant and café Carr recently closed, might find good memories in entrees like the braised beef short ribs or in the duck confit with carrot flan. The décor may seem a bit familiar too: Carr’s wife, Diane, puts her

personal touch on the restaurants. But this is far from a carbon copy of Pomme—or, for that matter, of Atlas, Carr’s restaurant in the Central West End. It’s worthwhile to sample the roast chicken or the sirloin steak at both to get an idea of Carr’s exceptional ability to draw out flavors by varying techniques or tweaking ingredients. You will probably see Carr passing through the dining room from time to time. But there’s no open kitchen, no pageantry around the presentation. “There is plenty of extraneous diversion and digression available to lure us away,” Carr wrote in his ode to Julia Child, “but we cook best when we simply cook.”

Tour de Cherokee Street
The eclectic street’s watering holes feature dive bars, whiskey joints and cocktails aplenty. by MATT SORRELL ONE HAPPY PLACE where I always steer both uninitiated locals and curious out-of-towners is Cherokee Street. Cutting east to west through Benton Park, it’s populated with all manner of eclectic retail, cultural and culinary destinations. Some have been doing business for years; others are relatively new kids on the block, but this vibrant stretch of road has undergone a long-overdue renaissance in recent years. As a result, the neighborhood has seen a boom in bar openings west of Jefferson Avenue.
One thing I love about this area is that I can park and go about my business on foot. There’s a sign in the window of one of the buildings here that says “Walk Your Neighborhood,” and that’s good advice—Cherokee needs to be experienced at ground level. Thankfully, Cherokee hasn’t succumbed to bland gentrification and chain store banality. Instead, the area has been invested in by folks who wish to remain independent and go their own way, which is at the very heart of the neighborhood’s character. Sure, there are some (to paraphrase Anthony Bourdain) “sock-head hipsters” and faux-hippies twirling about, but by and large, this street is about solid, salt-ofthe-earth folks who are less interested in trends than putting out quality food and drinks in a convivial atmosphere. Of course, to get the Cherokee experience you have to experience the people and places for yourself. Here’s a recap of my last excursion to give you some inspiration: STOP 1: THE FORTUNE TELLER BAR
There are plenty of spirits and beers on the list here, and they also have a pretty extensive food menu ranging from snacks to sammiches, so come hungry. Make sure to set your fork down to play with the Magic 8 Ball and admire the fine examples of taxidermy gazing down upon you. And definitely try a house cocktail. On this visit 96

I indulged in the My Milk Stout Brings All The Boys To The Yard: a mix of 4 Hands Chocolate Milk Stout, Thunderbest Baby Buffalo Bourbon, orange bitters and a house-made chili pepper syrup (the title is bigger than the drink), and discussed the dangers of riding a scooter in South City with Dave the bartender (2635 Cherokee St.). STOP 2: THE WHISKEY RING
This joint specializes in (wait for it)...whiskey. And they have a pretty fine array in their collection, which occasionally includes hard-to-get bottles like W.L. Weller 12. They make a mean cocktail with all of those delicious brown liquors as well. This time around, I enjoyed a nip of Rittenhouse Rye while taking in the impressive collection of velvet paintings that adorn the walls—Stallone as Cobra is my personal fave—and eavesdropped on a spirited debate between two flannel-clad lads at the end of the bar about the relative merits of PBR vs. Stag. Consensus: both are cheap and pretty good but better when paired with equally cheap and good whiskey (2651 Cherokee St.).
you really need anything else? This time around, I downed a couple of well bourbons, chowed on a Companion pretzel with some horseradish and listened to Bad Company while rhapsodizing about Brooklyn with a heavily tattooed artist and her dog. The dog didn’t have much to say (3227 Cherokee St.). Let’s be honest: I only scratched the surface on this trip. You could probably spend a month on Cherokee and not experience all the goodness that abounds. So get up, get moving and experience the Tour de Cherokee and see for yourself. WHAT I’M DRINKING NOW: Lately I’ve been
STOP 3: ARTBAR
This is always a priority stop because co-owner Tom Halaska and crew never fail to make me feel like a regular, even when I haven’t been around in a while. Unfortunately, there was no burlesque performance happening during my latest visit, so I made due with a Negroni, a coloring book and some crayons. In addition to cocktails, beer and spirits, there’s grub to be had here as well—and not just bar food. Sausage crepe, anyone? P.S. The crazy mosaic floor here alone is worth the visit (2732 Cherokee St.). STOP 4: LIVERY COMPANY
Now this is what I call a true dive bar—in the best sense. If you don’t feel immediately at home here, you’re probably not living right. Just a bar, some booths and a kick-ass digital jukebox—do
on a sparkling wine kick. There are plenty of classics that utilize bubbles, and you can pretty much top an ounce or so of any liqueur with it and create an instant taste sensation. Sparkling is a great way to dry out a drink while adding a bit of personality.

Dec. 14, Downtown
The Hot Chocolate 15K/5K is called “America’s Sweetest Race” for a reason: This year, participants ran through Downtown St. Louis and straight into a post-race party with hot chocolate, fondue, treats, music and games, but that wasn’t the sweetest part. Archetypes
Mary Kogut
After almost 35 years with the organization, Mary Kogut was named president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri in November. Her career, she says, has allowed her to combine both her personal and professional beliefs—including the belief that everyone should have access to critical reproductive health and education services. In her day-to-day, Kogut oversees an agency that serves 50,000 patients annually, supported by 160 staff members and a $11 million budget for eight health centers and Planned Parenthood’s multiple divisions, including public policy, research, stewardship and education. What is your current frame of mind? Really positive, very excited. When and where are you happiest? When I’m doing something I really love and when I’m with people I love being around. What is your favorite smell? I love the smell of onions simmering in olive oil. What is one word that describes you? Fair. What did you eat for breakfast today? Normally oatmeal, but today I splurged with an egg and homemade whole-wheat bread. Which words or phrases do you most overuse? “Hey!” What is your greatest weakness? I’m time-challenged. I believe I can get anywhere in St. Louis in 20 minutes.
What trait do you most admire in others? Humor and equity. Who or what is the greatest love of your life? My husband, and I love my family too. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I would have been a natural redhead. Which living person do you most admire? Hillary Clinton. If you were to die and come back as a person or thing, who or what would it be? I would have been a dancer, like Cyd Charisse. What is your most treasured possession? Some of the things I got from my parents, whom I miss. What is your greatest extravagance? I think being able to spend time doing things that are kind of frivolous—like playing games. What is your greatest fear? That I don’t reach my potential in life. On what occasion do you lie? I don’t. I’m a really lousy liar. Who are your favorite writers? Alice Hoffmann, because she writes about women, love, family and conflict. Which artists do you admire most? Really good musical artists, like George Winston and Vladimir Horowitz. What is your favorite hobby? I love to cook and I love to entertain and I love to exercise. Where would you most like to live? If not St. Louis, the islands, especially the Bahamian chain. Who are your heroes in real life? Strong ALIVE MAGAZINE | MARCH 2015
women in my life have taught me the most— both those in my family and whom I’ve worked for. If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive, who would it be? For a serious dinner, Abe Lincoln; for fun, the cast of “Wait Wait... Don’t Tell Me.” What’s something interesting that you just learned? I don’t like talking about myself. What are you most looking forward to? I’m excited about this new position, the change, continuing to move forward. What is one thing you wish would happen? I wish women could be respected for making their own decisions and recognized as smart, autonomous, able to take care of themselves and able to do what they need to do for themselves and their families. What is something you still want to learn? A second language. I’d like to be more proficient in Spanish and learn Italian. What is one thing you want to do before you die? More traveling, of course.
