Original Design POPULLEY is an interactive suspended installation that consists of a bunch of creatures, who reside in a children's oncology hospital. This is an installation that aims to encourage the target group (children with cancer who are taking therapy in the hospital) to be more physical and socially active.
The creatures are paired through a pulley system and when one of them is pulled in the vertical direction the other creature will go up and emit light and play a random sound. Other creatures will be activated by the sounds and in this way the Populley triggers children to play with it.

Different characters
Weaker
- 6 characters with different ‘personalities' that are expressed by corresponding appearance and interaction factors 4
Different strength needed to pull the creatures - change in the pulley system enable children with different strengths to play with Populley
2
Basic shape of the creature - water drop shape shows the use cue - stakeholder requirement
5
Sound feedback based on pulling speed - more matching interactive pattern between user action and product feedback
6
Stronger loading capacity - can bear the impact from a grown up with safety factor 5
7
Simplified electronical/control and power supply system - designing the creature as a detachable individual unit for easier maintenance

Important details Wood handles gives the user a warm feeling, and gives the creatures as well as the indoor environment a natural feeling. T-rubber used to cover the edge of the shells, and help connecting two shells. Painting from inside can avoid the lacquer being scratched easily; the sticker of different creature can be pasted on the inner side of the shell as well.
Limiter is mounted on the rope to stop the creature from hitting the pulley when it is over pulled.
Wider handle designed to avoid children hanging on the creature, by making them unable to grasp the handle completely. Lacquer Sticker PETG Shell

Project information: Group research & individual design | 02/2013 - 07/2013 | Advanced Concept Design Course
MY COFFEE COMPANY
is a system made up of a personal coffee maker and an ingredient refill machine. This design provides user a personal and flexible coffee experience, which meets the need/trend of having coffee time in a multi-environment workplace and personal schedule. The main innovativeness of the concept is the specific interaction between coffee and the user and changes of the office coffee ritual.
PERSONAL PORTABLE COFFEE MAKER Making fresh coffee according to user’s setting (amount and strength), user can make coffee whenever and wherever he/she wants.
PUBLIC INGREDIENTS REFILL STATION User can refill his/her personal coffee maker with water, freshly ground coffee here.

Key factors from research
- Most people take coffee break as “energy buffering” to support their work; - People require efficiency ; - Most people have fixed personal preference for coffee - Coffee corner is an important social occasion; - Few people think coffee from the ‘big black box’ (coffee machine) has high quality; - People do not have special impression of coffee at work.

Styling Metaphor: ripple moment - a stone falling into water
Use experience & styling: Provide user a elegant and interesting experience when he/she is taking action, by evoking his/her memory about the ripple moment. It is the result of combining functional and aesthetic needs.
The curve makes it easier to people to take the bottle out from the refilling cell and take it walk around. And the shape of outlet implies people where to pour coffee out. The button on the lid is used to open the outlet of thermal bottle.
plug for power supply
The marks on the strength adjustment ring and water amount control ring tell the user their settings directly.
The groove on the coffee bean bin makes it easier to take out the bins for the bean refilling.
The round edge enables makes it easy and comfortable to grasp the wheel, no matter for the right hand or the left hand.
The LED light make the wheel looks lighter, and add shading around the coffee beans, make it more attractive.

Key words_Home accessory, social Local Resources, Life style Nostalgia, longing for the good old days. What we can retrieve from our memory? The "MEMO" series is a set of modern home accessories origin from the pieces from past, which make people think about the good old days and the contrast with life today. Objects reflect the lifestyle of a certain period, they, like human beings, can “remember. Therefore, in my design, I used "one day in the life" as the trail and selected typical nostalgic products people used at different time points, then give them new life in modern life context.
Target user - People born in 70-80’s Hope for the future boost young people work hard; memory of happy time in the past give them comfort in their stressing city life. So many people who are born in 80’s have special emotion about their childhood. It is a main reason why nostalgia of youth culture is so popular currently.

future = exciting but uncertain
Products show what is changed, what is preserved. They are like the memo that records our culture, society, emotions, etc.
?
MY VISION I want to provide people who are born in 70-80's a product that gives them a piece of warm moment, by bringing back the memory about good old times to their life nowadays.
How is life different in a day PAST
Be awaken by alarm clock with chicken pointer and mum to eat breakfast.
After the ringing of clock bell, the campus was full of sounds and laughers.
Hearing a warm voice from far away was a magic. Conversation could be endless.
Having tea from an enamel cup is a daily ritual related to your social status.
Quiet office cell, can only hear the tick-tack from the clocks on the wall.
We are more exposed to a wider world with more senses.
More ways to show your taste and status today.
TODAY
Be awaken by alarm in the phone to catch the rush hour sub-way.

What can / should we eat? Something is missing.
We are too busy to gardening now, no space or time for it.
Now let’s share on the cloud!

“Little Friend” Night-light Design for leftover children | 2011 | “ New Channel” social innovation summer campus
parents working in city
Tongdao is an under-developed area inhabited by ethnic minorities. There are many leftover children there whose parents are working in big cities to feed their families. In the day, they can play with their friends, but in the evening, most of them are alone with their old grandparents, since most of them are the only child in their families. "Little friend" night lamp is designed as a pet-like toy for these leftover children to relief their fear and loneliness in the dark evening, by bringing them light and companion.
"Little friend" night lamps act like pets that will keep accompany near their beds at night for these leftover children. It is also a toy that these children can play with, children can give their “little friends different faces by combining different felt facial features pieces.
1
Most children in Tongdao are living with their grandparents and could meet their parents only once or twice a year.
Thus they need even more company than the children who have the parental love.
Usually, they spend the whole day with their close friends.
But in the evening, when they go back home, they are alone because of the one child policy in China.
Tongdao is an underdeveloped area, children there have little thing to play with, which limit the chance to practice their creativity. "Little friend" provide children the chance to create their own creatures by making the features with cardboard. In Tongdao, there is massive bamboo and bamboo weaving craft. This can be used to make these toys locally, besides, with the support from Markor furnishing, it is possible to develop this bamboo craft further to provide more job opportunities for local people.
