The Belgian coastline is mainly manmade along its entire length (from east to west) and is cut transversally (from north to south) by water at the ports: Zeebrugge, Blankenberg Ostend and Nieuwpoort. In particular, we have analyzed this confrontation of the land facing the sea at the level of Ostend. There are 3 ways to manage this limit: - natural limit (the dunes east of the port) - built and habitable boundary (the Atlantic wall west of the port) - industrial boundary (the port in the center, fracturing the city) In this way, the land borders the sea, the sea flows into the land but the land never ventures onto the sea. After defining the different TYPOLOGIES of the limits in Ostende, we have established an ideal VISION for them: the creation of a new thin limit on the sea, a pier, solving several problems in the city. To achieve this we proposed 3 STRATEGIES which individually refelct the 3 main functions of the city (housing, industry or nature). A SCENARIO bringing together the strong points of each strategy finally emerged, allowing to free the port from the city, improving the urban and the seaside environment. Indeed, it allows a management of industrial nuisances, a natural lagooning and the emergence of new ecosystems but also the production of fresh water and a beautiful promenade on the sea.

Project

Rehabilitation in Ottignies, a residential town 20km from Brussels, the Douaire (huge space without charm, with shopping center and parking). Building a hundred collective housing units, enhancing social exchange in the heart of the city. Create an identity for this place full of potential.

85 housings

Built along a major national road, Ottignies is a town of passage. No central pole or meeting point is defined. Therefore, this project aims to rehabilitate the Douaire by installing collective housing in harmony with nature and the city’s commercial needs. The site will be bordered by a green promenade to the west, a mineral ‘grand place’ to the east and a soft mobility commercial street to the north. All of this will flow down to the banks of the Dyle, small river rehabilitated in the south. Six housing units are attached to this sloping terrain. They function as a duo, offering garden spaces (private or common) in the center and parking and circulation zones on the sides. In addition, each unit includes a large common area, accessible to the entire housing complex: music room, library, laundry room, etc. These spaces are connected by the outside, encouraging social diversity and encounters. As far as the program is concerned, there are 4 types of apartments, ranging from 1 bedroom to 4 bedrooms (duplex). Designed on the basis of 5x5m square modules, the layout and adaptability of these is very flexible.

‘Dumbpossible’

request

·· ·· ··

Activate, in all seasons, the ‘champ des possibles’ (vast industrial wasteland in the Mile End district of Montreal). Imagine a program serving the surrounding industrial district. Develop this program in a pre-defined capable volume.

location Located on a wasteland, our project is borded by indus-

trial buildings, a monastery and the railway line. This industrial wasteland has been invested by a local collective called « les amis du champ des possibles ». This collective aims to develop and preserve the biodiversity of the space, to enhance the place as a location for gathering and education.

Project

The morphology of our cultural center is the result of a predefined dumbox from which a volume has been extruded, creating a vast central void ideal for gathering. Two boxes are then distinguishable on the sides, providing private spaces. The whole is finally covered with a large glass skin forming a vast greenhouse, in the continuity of the ‘champ des possibles’. Two types of spaces are defined: on one hand open spaces allowing encounters and on the other hand boxes for offices, workshops and auditoriums. The final aim is to interconnect all these spaces in order to promote social contact.
