My name is Aljoša, a mason learning to speak Latin, , an architectural adventurer. My ambitions do not always lead me to make the most reasonable choices, but I prefer to follow the mysterious in search for new challenges. One might say this is a rather gullible proposition, but to sail the horizon of architecture I rely on the best tools, always ready in my pocket – knowledge, experience, scientific legacy and passion. I admire fragile, contextual architecture that knows how to defy common architectural degradation with its strong, elegant appearance – a lighthouse which guides and inspires young, ambitious prospects, among which I humbly think I belong. To sail this sea is to follow our collective goal: to responsibly co-create and share space. CURRICULUM VITAE about me name nationality born e-mail telefon

A B S T R A C T The purpose of this theoretical and research thesis is a study of Edvard Ravnikar’s architectural design of a place of reverence, which researches the architect’s beliefs and thematic references in designing mass graves of the National Liberation Struggle. It is based on a large volume of field documentation and a thorough review of Ravnikar’s personal archive. This resulted in the discovery of the yet unpublished Ravnikar’s manuscripts on The Book of Tea by Okakura Kakuzō of 1950, and a collection of articles from journals on Japanese culture and art of the 19th and 20th centuries. The dates and contents of the above-mentioned material draw new parallels to and influences on Ravnikar’s design of a place of reverence. Simultaneously, new facts have been uncovered regarding the integral design of the memorials and their chronological order, which have a significant impact on our understanding of the architect’s creative process. These new discoveries are broadening our perspective on known facts. H Y P O T H E S I S When designing the theme of the National Liberation Struggle place of reverence, Edvard Ravnikar also referred to the culture of Japan. In his design he fused spatial concepts and aesthetic elements of Mediterranean Antiquity and traditional Japanese art. The two can be defined as cultures of building in stone or wood, respectively. The former culture aspires to relative permanence, and the latter to restoration and transience. The Japanese spatial concepts that are based on worshipping the transience of nature are most clearly reected in his first works after writing the manuscript; in other words, after 1950. In the mass graves in Vojščica, Begunje and Draga, one can observe the aesthetic principles of arranging a Zen Buddhist Karesansui rock garden, and in the memorial complex in Kampor on the island of Rab the spatial sequences of an Early Christian basilica and the Zen Buddhist Chaniwa garden as a place for a tea ceremony.

The basic unified structure of single units resonates with the nearby tree trunks, while ceiling compositions interact with the treetops. A similar narration and idea about the use of the same material that speaks differently in different compositions, is nicely expressed in Muuratsalo, by architect Alvar Aalto.

| R E V I T A L I Z A T I O N S T A R A C E R K E V design studio III | FA UNI Ljubljana | 2010 prof. Jurij K O B E , doc. Rok Ž N I D A R Š I Č The area in question deals with the importance of revitalisation of the historical village centre in Spodnja Šiška neighbourhood in Ljubljana. First settlement here was built in the 12th century, when the area served as a staged entrance to the town, well-known for its trade and wine. Today, it is a degraded area, without a clear vision for architectural and urban heritage. This is especially evident in the lack of will to preserve the identity of Stara Cerkev (The Old Church), renewed by architect Jože Plečnik.
| design studio III | F A U N I L J
By placement of a new cultural programme, the importance of the old village centre is enhanced, and so it gains its old feature of being the hub of the Šiška neighbourhood in Ljubljana. This intervention wishes to create a quality scenography for Stara Cerkev, and in this way, to visually and contextually emphasize it. On the ground floor, a new cultural programme in the form of a library (with workshops and bookstore) serves as a connecting element. A spatial change on the ground floor creates semi-open atriums and an external auditorium, which spread the library activities outwards. At the same time, the ground floor platform serves as a walkable flat roof, or as an anteroom with access to the apartments on the upper floors. Existing deteriorated roofing is replaced by new lofts, which are designed to resonate with the surroundings with their numerosity and together with the church bell tower, serve as a reminiscence of the urbanism of the old village centre.

The skyscraper in question is not a result of an attempt to find a relationship between newly built and existing context. It is a study of high rise building’s spatial orchestration and the result is its visual manifestation. In its sense, and at times very pragmatically, it reveals dematerialization through its fragility and vertical growth in relationship to the distribution of the programmes.

| HOUSING DEVELOPMENT GLARUS cunstructive studio | ZHAW Winterthur | FS 2014 Beat W E B E R, Alain R O S E R E N S Glarus represents a strong connection to cultural and urban heritage, which is reflected in the building typology of terraced houses with front gardens and inner yards. The wish is to express the genius loci of space and of living between buildings (Jan Gehl). Greenfield land in the vicinity of the city centre, serves as a connecting part between two different urban scales where apartment and industrial areas meet. The design is inspired by the microcosm of existing gardens and yards, which are laid out in unpredictable patterns. They are a clear indicator that the residents tend to live outside of their houses too, in surrounding green spaces.
| constructive Studio | Z H A W
The main design concept is to lay the space functionalities of being, living and communicating on the emptiness of the yards. This time differently, firstly is design the emptiness of the yard, which is later embraced by the apartment tissue.

The construction is designed as an industrial building based on a frame of 8.1 mx8.1 m, from the underground car park to the roof. The slabs in slight overhang of the three floors characterize the architectural expression. The spatial concept of the upper floors is a radically open open-space with a plurality of work plateau in various configurations in a way to form an interior space in terraces.

| | | SAVSKI SQUARE Competition | 2. prize | RS, BELGRADE, 2019 atelier Medprostor Architecture: Rok Žnidaršič, Jerneja Fisher Knap, Aljoša Kotnjek, Dino Mujić,Katja Ivić, Dejan Fortuna The principal landscape element of our proposal for the redesign of Savski Square is a large, green ‘grass carpet’ in shape of a dramatic bowl with a slightly extended edge toward the roadway; the shape uses and accentuates the mild inclination of the existing terrain. The design of the element is a response to highly demanding edge conditions (noise, traffic safety) while establishing a continuous green layer above the remaining underground part of the sewage pumping station on the south-east part of the site. The extended edge of the ‘green bowl’ provides a gentle visual barrier between the square and the car traffic while attaining the visual presence of renowned surrounding buildings. In contrast to this large green grandstand is a flat, paved plaza on the lower level which acts as a forespace of the Monument to Stefan Nemanja and the future museum in the old central railway station. In this open space, the green masses of groups of trees seem to appear as anomalies, spatial pauses in form of voluminous park-like plantations of trees and as high-quality shading of paved surfaces respectively.
| atelier M E D P R O S T O R
The ‘green crease’ on side of the roadway enables for the programs such as a playground or public toilets to be placed in the central part of the area in a subtle manner, without considerable visual exposure.

The design of the pavement originates in the urban scale of the regular semi-circular shape of the square, but it could also relate to flaky skin structures of freshwater fish – a reminder of the former topographical feature of the site. Due to its modularity, the pattern can be adapted to respond to the scale of the open space, its appearance and its meaning. The sizes and layout variations of pavement blocks are dictated by the sizes of corresponding micro-locations while different types of natural stones provide for a variety of colors and color combinations. The pavement layout changes according to the corresponding space - from a distinctively neutral, almost solemn pattern in the vicinity of the monument to an almost art-deco-like arrangements in front of the main entrance to the old railway station, while the market area south of the monument is carpeted with an expressive pattern and the playground is defined by a petite pattern with spacing between pavement blocks.

| | | URBAN RENEWAL OF MEDICAL AREA VODMAT competition | 1. prize | SI, Ljubljana, 2021 with Katušić Kocbek architects Architecture: Aljoša Kotnjek, Davor Katušić, Jana Kocbek, Karla Jelić Balta, Antonija Andelić The urban design upgrades the unfinished concept of University Clinical Center (architect Stanko Kristl) and existing Faculty of Medicine in a way that defines two balanced urban axes: Šlajmer‘s street and the rectangular new urban axis (newly named Vodmat Campus promenade) which also extends across the Ljubljanica. In this way, a balance is achieved with the existing unfinished spatial tendencies and with the flexibility of future inputs of urban qualities. Šlajmerjeva street is deepened for motor vehicles and the ground floor of which is also a common traffic / service area. New promenade serves a hub for public transport, since to it is attached main street and river public transportation in means of busses, boats and city rental bikes. Zaloška cesta is arranged as a common shared space area. The green system successfully integrates greens with health programs. The buildings are designed as higher volumes, but in this way they release the adjacent land, which is intended for public urbanism areas, service areas and green park areas. New arrangements of Ljubljanicas shore resonates with Jože Plečniks approach in how city river can enhannce public life. In that manner existing pedestrian and cycling along the river can extends from city center all the way to the Vodmat area and even further. Oppurtunity of crossing the river via bridge simultaneously becomes a place of gathering and junction of public transportation.

| | | ISLAMIC CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL CENTER competition | HR, Zagreb, 2021 Architektur: Aljoša Kotnjek, Karla Jelić Balta, Tin Pugelnik The new spatial complex of cultural and educational center with its juxtaposition to the existing mosque in Zagreb, seeks to respond to the insufficiently urbanistically defined context of the Borovje settlement, in a way that its design enables flexibility of future interventions in space. Therefore, the Center rises from the ground floor, and in addition to generating new public space, allows the formation of two new public and humanized axes, which connect migration axes in the immediate vicinity. They are intended for pedestrian and bicycle traffic and have an absolute advantage in space use. The axes also support the organization of car access, delivery and intervention, by setting up a clear spatial framework for zoning among different users. The second urbanistic element is a ramp which streches through all floors and its intention is to distribute and extend qualities of open public space in ground floor in section. Symbolicly design resonates with an idea of non-political movement of largest islamic peacful gathering Biswa Ijtema, where under commnon tent people demonstrate of world peace, unity, solidarity, mutual love and respect.

The dominant position of the Kušljan Villa at the end of the topographical cape in Brežice‘s old city centre, offers an exceptional view of alluvial plain at the confluence of rivers Krka and Sava, with newly built hydroelectric power plant Brežice. Therefore, a position which spontaneously inspires thinking parallels about the importance of managing nature to gain energetic independence, which so strongly resembles the importance of managing the castle building‘s estate, placed on such a powerful strategic position, directly cradled by later built city villas. In the case of reshaping the valley, it is not a demonstration of power, but a promotion of the energy usage of the watercourses and other renewable sources of energy, which goes hand in hand with the simultaneous natural design of the banks of the reservoir lake and its dedicated green areas, which offer new opportunities for sport, recreational and leisure activities.
