LIGHTNING A Speaker System for Highest Requirements Way Beyond Mainstream. A combination of a perfect sound performance with a reasonably sized cabinet of an individual design resulting in an exceptional speaker system. The line arrangement totalling 32 bass-midrange speakers and 12 tweeter magnetostats create a rare sound experience. The Lightning is able to develop finest music details, from piano to tutti fortissimo, from solo performances to large orchestras, from romantic pop music to heavy metal and at the very next moment, it is able to ruthlessly radiate huge dynamics without showing any sign of compression which commonly occurs in most HiFi speakers. Original quote from a listener: "… I was most impressed by how perfectly and completely different the Lightning "delivered" the music to the listening room of MONACOR compared to any other speaker I have ever listened to before. They should not be tested in direct comparison with standard speakers, otherwise all the others will certainly sound just like preschool …" Due to the directional sound radiation, the Lightning is also suitable for rooms with difficult acoustics, because reflections from sound-reflecting walls, ceilings and floors are far less prompted.

Subwoofer WILD THING (Speaker building concept, see "Speaker Building NOW!", K-2008-LSB) The Lightning features a radiation range of 100-20,000 Hz, thus additional subwoofers are required for bass reproductions. With regard to appearance and sound, the WILD THING is an absolutely perfect addition. In dual arrangement and equipped with an efficient active module SAM-2, a clear and powerful bass reproduction can be provided which is satisfactory for performing with the Lightning. Furthermore, the active module SAM-2 features a high-pass filter for driving the amplifier of the Lightning. Thus, the small bass-midrange speakers are balanced, their excursions are minimised resulting in a significantly decreased modulation distortion in the midrange which is vital for the sound.

Mounting Apart from the 53 mm Forstner bit for drilling the 32 holes for the bass-midrange speakers, customary workshop equipment will be sufficient for mounting the Lightning. Beside a drill and a fret saw, a routing cutter with a 45째 cutter with a spacer disc and a radius cutter R8 to R10 are recommended. Instead of the Forstner bit, a hole saw could also be used. However, the result may not be of the same standard as with the Forstner bit. 1. Mark the central drilling points for the bass-midrange speakers onto sound wall A and the cutouts for the magnetostats onto sound wall B. The "uneven" measurements were chosen in order to separate the individual chambers with continuous partitions. 2. Drill the 53 mm holes and saw the cutouts for the tweeters. 3. Make a 5 x 45째 chamfer at the back and a 1 x 45째 chamfer at the front of the 53 mm drill holes. The front chamfer is used as a sealing surface for speaker SP-6/8SQ. The rear chamfer is required to ensure the speaker's radiation. In case, a routing cutter is not available, these chamfers can also be made by a rasp or file (see photos A + B). 4. Glue sound wall A and sound wall B together at the sides. The speakers must be set up mirror-inverted! Place the parts onto an even surface in order to achieve a protrusion of 2 mm. 5. Glue together the speaker cabinet. For this, place the glued sound wall onto an even surface. Level out the 2 mm protrusion on the front by using paper strips. Now, glue the side walls, bottom, cover as well as the chamber partitions. Place the partitions in such a way that each chamber will contain 8 bass-midrange speakers and 3 tweeters. 6. Please ensure a precise cutting and glueing of the square ledger strips on which the rear wall is screwed on later. Glue the square ledger strip onto the partitions, too. The distance from the edge of the side walls to the square leger strips is 13 mm (see photo C).

7. Mark and cut the cutouts for the bass-reflex openings (30x190 mm) onto the rear wall. Please ensure to work carefully in order to prevent the rear wall from breaking at the 10 mm partition walls which are created. 8. Glue on the bass-reflex partition walls. Please ensure that the rear wall can easily be inserted into the cabinet. If this is not the case, regrind a little. 9. The side walls can be designed as desired. However, please ensure that the walls at the protruding front wall are chamfered or at least bevelled in order to prevent corner reflections. The side walls should be screwed on the inside of the cabinet in order to hide the drillings. 10. Now, you can lacquer the cabinets. 11. Now, insert the speakers. Please ensure that the soldering tags of the connecting terminals of each speaker are facing upwards! This greatly facilitates the subsequent soldering. In order to achieve an almost straight alignment, please make sure to insert the first and the last speaker as straight as possible, predrill screw holes and tightly screw them in. Now, position a levelling bar (small straight board) on the side of both of these speakers and each subsequent speaker can now be aligned to this levelling bar. It is important that the little protrusion at the basket of the bass-midrange speaker is neatly positioned in the 1mm chamfer of the 53 mm holes. Then, predrill all the screw holes and tighten the speakers. Insert the tweeters RBT-95SQ with thin sealing tape MDM-5 and align them with the protrusion of the sound wall. The bassmidrange speakers will seal at the 1 mm chamfer (see photo D). 12. The side walls should be mounted prior to soldering in order to prevent damage to the speakers when fitting the cabinet. 13. Now, solder together the individual speakers according to the drawing plan. Drill holes into the partitions between the chambers for the cable connections. After pulling the cables through, seal the holes with a sealant.

The crossover network can either be set up on the rear wall near the lower chamber or inside the cabinet itself. Insert the connecting terminals into the rear wall and connect them with the crossover network. 15. Each chamber has to be filled quite firmly with 2 bags of MDM-3 each for dampening. Position the dampening in such a way that the bass-reflex openings will not be covered.

16. Glue sealing tape MDM-35 onto the square ledger strips prior to inserting the rear wall. Measure the hole spacing on the square ledger strips for screw connection of the rear wall. Predrill all the screw holes in order to prevent the square ledger strips from splitting open. Remember the base plate before screwing on the rear wall. It is still possible at this stage to screw it on from the inside.
