Fall 2011 All About Cabo Vistor’s Guide 3
Basics: Getting There Arriving by plane
If you are arriving in Cabo via plane, you will most likely be flying into the Los Cabos International Airport (SJD). The airport is located just north of San Jose del Cabo, approximately 45 minutes from Cabo San Lucas. Taxis are available at the airport, but it’s best to book a shuttle or private transporation ahead of time. Be aware that the planes do not go to a gate, so you will need to walk down a set of stairs and then walk outside to the immigration entrance.
Arriving by Cruise
Most Mexican Riviera cruises stop in Cabo San Lucas. The cruises anchor in the Cabo San Lucas Marina, however they do not dock. You’ll go to the tender platform and a smaller boat will bring you to shore. From there, you can walk around the marina or catch a taxi to one of the beaches or many activities.
Customs
If Los Cabos is your Mexican entry point, you will recieve a Mexican Tourist Card and a Customs Declaration Form to fill out. You’ll need to present the top part of the Tourist Card with your passport at immigration and the bottom part you will need to exit Mexico. After picking up your luggage, you will need to put your belongings through an x-ray machine and then you will give your customs form to the customs officers.
Learn the Language While most people in Cabo speak English, it’s helpful to know a little bit about the local language: Spanish.
Hola Hello No lo Quiero I don’t Want it Cuanto Cuesta? - How Much is it?
Como se dice How do you say... Donde Esta Where is it? Gracis Thank You
Time zone and power
Los Cabos is on Mountain Time (MT) and the power is 110 Volts, the same as the United States and Canada. There is no need to bring any converters.
Money and Currency The currency in Mexico is Pesos although US Dollars are still widely accepted. New rules and regulations have been put in place to curb Dollar use. Be aware that because retailers and hotels can only exchange a certain amount of dollars into pesos, larger purchases may need to be done in pesos or with a credit card. Visa, Mastercard and American Express are widely accepted throughout Los Cabos. There are also many ATMS throughout the area.
Weather
With 360 days of sunny weather, you are basically guaranteed nice weather for your Cabo vacation. During the high season (December through late April), the weather is usually 80ish during the day and cooler in the evenings and night. The summer season (July, August and September) is when the weather reaches hotter temperatures. September and October are the “rainy season.” Hurricanes do hit Los Cabos sometimes, but this is rare. 4 All About Cabo Vistor’s Guide
Fall 2011
Basics: LOS CABOS Cabo San Lucas Cabo San Lucas, more commonly known as Cabo, is located at the bottom of the Baja Peninsula, where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. Cabo San Lucas was originally a small fishing village which has grown into one of the most popular tourist spots in Mexico. Famous Cabo San Lucas attractions include Land’s End, the Cabo San Lucas Marina, Medano Beach and party spots like Cabo Wabo, El Squid Roe and Baja Junkie. Almost all of of downtown Cabo San Lucas is walkable.
The Corridor
The Cabo San Lucas - San Jose del Cabo Corridor is the 40km stretch of highway between the two towns. Along the corridor you will find many hotels and championship golf courses. You will need a taxi or car if you want to go to either of the towns.
San Jose del Cabo San Jose del Cabo was originally founded in the 1700s as a Jesuit mission. Rich with culture and art, San Jose del Cabo is the more traditional of the two Cabos. Downtown San Jose del Cabo is known for its shopping, art galleries and the famous San Jose del Cabo Mission which dominates the town square. Many all inclusive hotels line the beach to the south. East of town is home to the San Jose Estuary and the new Puerto Los Cabos Marina. Most of downtown San Jose del Cabo is walkable.

transportation
Airport Transportation The Los Cabos International Airport is located in San Jose del Cabo, which is about 30-45 minutes from Cabo San Lucas. It is highly recommended that you book your transportation before arriving in Los Cabos. A taxi ride from the airport to Cabo San Lucas is about $65 dollars. It’s less if you are staying in San Jose del Cabo. There are many private transportation service companies which offer airport transfers for $65 to $140 per trip, based on the number of people and how far you are going A less expensive option is a shuttle called a “collectivo” which costs around $15. This means that you will be sharing your transportation with other travelers. Ask your hotel if they provide a shuttle to and from the airport. Many times it’s included with the cost of your room.
A private driver loads up at the airport A typical taxi cab in Los Cabos.
Exploring Los Cabos
Downtown Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo are both accessible by foot. Within walking distance, you can visit restaurants, shops and even the beach. If you are close to either towns, it’s relatively easy to get a taxi to take you downtown and you can walk from there. There are also buses that can take you around town which are rather inexpensive. Rental cars allow you the chance to really get to know Cabo, but they can be expensive and the insurance options can be confusing. However, if you are staying in the corridor or at a villa, a rental car might be a good idea. Private Transportation is also available. You can hire a private driver to take you to restaurants or activities. You can also book a day trip to a near by town like Todos Santos or Santiago.

ishing put Cabo on the map. With an extraordinarily high catch success rate at 70-100%, Los Cabos is perhaps the best known deep sea fishing spot in Mexico. The weather in Cabo is sunny and warm almost year round so you can count on a beautiful day while trolling for your catch. No wonder the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black and Blue - is held in Cabo San Lucas! Most people who head to Cabo are hoping to catch one of the giant marlin that swim just off the coast. Marlin and other large fish like tuna are usually caught on a fishing charter - either a fishing yacht or a panga. Luxury yacht charters are usually more expensive, but they will hold more people and often can be booked as all inclusive packages (complete with drinks and a freshly cooked meal). Fishing licenses are required, but are usually included in a charter package. Remember to ask just in case. They are about $13 dollars per person. The best spots to book a fishing charter are either the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the Puerto Los Cabos Marina. While many people suggest
“los Cabos is the marlin Capital of the World”
heading to the marina in the afternoon to ask others how their charters went, there are also a lot of reputable companies that you can book your charter with before you even get to Cabo. It’s important to remember to tip your captain and crew. 15-20% is the standard rate. The most popular type of fishing is deep sea fishing, but it is also possible to go fly fishing in Cabo. Roosterfish are the most sought after fly fish catch.

olf in Los Cabos consists of some of the best courses in Latin America. Designed by golf giants like Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman, Cabo’s mountain and desert terrain has been transformed into a golfer’s paradise. Expect long holes, par threes that require you to drive over giant arroyos and stunning ocean views throughout all of Cabo’s courses. Most of the courses in Cabo are along the Corridor - the 20 mile stretch between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Plenty are public or semi-private meaning that as a visitor, you can definitely play. Green fees in Cabo can be quite steep - Cabo del Sol commands over a $300 price tag during the high season. If you are looking to golf for less, look for packages or visit Cabo during the low season (Summer and Fall). Most of the golf courses offer practice ranges and putting greens. The use of such facilities are usually included with your round. As courses are long and the sun is strong, golf carts are usually included. The club houses at most of the golf courses have a place to grab lunch or a quick snack. Some also offer fine dining options for a special occasion or nice dinner. Most courses offer club rentals and private lessons for additional fees.

Playa Solmar-
This beach on the Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas is great for whale watching and beach walks. Playa Solmar’s large waves make it unsafe for swimming, but great for photographers.
Surfing in Cabo started in the ‘50s, but the location became a hot spot during in the 80’s. Most of the popular surfing spots are in the Corridor, like Zippers, El Tule, La Roca, Monuments and Acapulquito (Old Man’s beach). You will find a lot of surf shops near Costa Azul and Playa Acapulquito as well as surf schools like the Mike Doyle Surf School. Boards, rash guards as well as private and group lessons are available. Towards Todos Santos you will find the famous Los Cerritos Surfing Colony and La Pastora and Pescadoro are not far away. To the East there are also some waves like Shipwrecks. If you are looking to surf on some bigger waves, you should head to Los Cabo from March to November. However, there are beginner waves in the area year round and the season for the Pacific side (Like Cerritos) is during the Fall and Winter. Fall 2011 All About Cabo Vistor’s Guide 31

ightlife is one of Cabo’s top draws - offering visitors a chance to escape and enjoy themselves. The nightlife in Los Cabos is a mixture of a low key surfer vibe and the sophistication that comes with being a top tourist destination. You’ll find bungalow style, open air party spots like Baja Junkie and more comsmopolitan clubs like Pink Kitty and Mandala. 80s lovers can rock out at Cabo Wabo and Spring Breakers can party the night away at the multi-level El Squid Roe. The nightlife spots in Cabo San Lucas are all within walking distance from each other and it is not uncommon to see groups of friends traveling from bar to club throughout the night. Nightlife in San Jose del Cabo is a little calmer, more focused on restaurants with bars. However, the newer Red Martini has become a popular party spot. The drinking age in Los Cabos is 18 and the bars and clubs are open until around 4am. Most people head out to the bars around 11pm. Ladies Night is a common promotional tool - women can drink for free during a certain time period, usually until midnight. More about Cabo nightlife

SHOPPING
A vacation to Los Cabos would not be complete without a shopping expedition. Mexico in general is known for reasonably priced silver jewelry, handicrafts and artwork. The Los Cabos area offers a variety of shopping places for you to choose from. Shop the quaint town of San Jose del Cabo and stroll through the many stores that line the streets. Visit downtown Cabo for mall shopping with familiar brand names. Explore the boutiques that fill the out- door walking mall at the Shoppes at Palmilla in the corridor. It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for something authentically Mexican or searching for something familiar and close to home, Los Cabos has it all. You can also find many one of a kind hand crafted items such as pottery, blown glass, jewelry and more. Whether you are shopping for clothes, accessories, furniture or jewelry, you’ll be sure to find the perfect treasure.
Sign at the Shoppes at Palmilla Downtown Cabo San Lucas is one of the premiere shopping scenes. With everything from traditional mall shopping at the Puerto Paraiso mall to many souvenir spots around town and the marina flea market. The Corridor has many shopping centers as well as large stores like Costco. Right outside of downtown San Jose del Cabo, the Shoppes at Palmilla offers luxury shopping with boutiques, art galleries and more. Downtown San Jose del Cabo is full of smaller boutiques and jewelry stores. You’ll find most shops here close to the Zocolo, or along Calle Zaragoza and Boulevard Mijares. San Jose del Cabo shopping is known best for its silver and opal jewelry, beautiful home furnishings and upscale resort wear.

Ask: The All About Girls “What
is the best time to visit Cabo?”
There’s no “bad time” to visit Cabo. It’s almost always sunny, warm and full of lots of things to do. But there are certain things that you might want to schedule your trip around. The high season is early December to late March / early April. This is when the most people visit Cabo. The summer is cheaper, but hotter. December to March is the best time for whale watching and August and September are good for sea turtle releases.
Q. I’m thinking about
traveling to Cabo. Is it Safe?
A. Cabo San Lucas is over
1,000 miles from the US/Mexico border where most of the drug violence is right now. Los Cabos depends on tourism and the resorts, restaurants and other businesses make sure to watch out for visitors. Just like any place you travel, make sure to be smart and alert.
Q. Is the water safe to
drink? Fruits? Veggies?
A. Almost all of the hotels and
resorts in Los Cabos have their own filtered water systems and most the restaurants use purified water. Few people have a problem with the water, fruits or vegetables in the main parts of Cabo, but if you are still worried bottled water is available all over Cabo.

Last Glance: LAnd’s End
Finisterra
Finisterra is Spanish for the end of the land. In Los Cabos, Land’s End or Finisterra is a rock formation that stretches out into the water where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. One of the most famous landmarks in Los Cabos is the arch- El Arco, which is part of Land’s End. Most of the time, water and waves fill the bottom of the arch, but every few years the tides will make a small beach under the arch. Cruises (sightseeing, snorkeling, sunset, etc) will take you close up to take your own photo of the arch - a must for any Cabo San Lucas vacation photo album. You can also buy a variety of souviners with arch on it - including bottles of tequila!
