The new divisare books are small format pocket-book size, in limited editions of 200 copies, high-resolution digital printed, bound, with a hardcover, finished in fine English paper. Titles on the cover are silver foil hot stamped. We attach great importance to the tactile quality of the book as an object as well as, of course, its contents. Unlike the web that runs fast and vanishes faster, leaving no trace, Our books have the aim of lasting in time. The idea is simple: printed paper instead of pixels; we just want to invite you to get away from the screens of your devices for a moment, to sit back in a favorite armchair and enjoy a good read, in the old fashioned way.

The image of cardboard still remains that of a packaging material, but in the last few years, at home and abroad, different projects have been built using cardboard. This article gives a broad spectrum of projects and products using cardboard. Cardboard tubes are being used by Shigeru Ban as a means of construction in a show of light and open space. Ad van Kil applies the specific texture of honeycell board. The lightness and the ability to recycle are properties fitting a short lifespan and temporary applications. As a result of these properties, two temporary theatres and one party tent have been built. Cardboard is a lightweight, cheap and environmentally positive material. The packaging industry has a lot of knowledge on cardboard as a packaging material, in the building industry it is still a largely unknown material. To acquire a significant role in architecture, the mechanical and physical properties will have to be researched and determined. In principal, the fire and damp resistance problems could be overcome. Research also will have to be done into the possible areas of appliance, considering its characteristic properties. The lightness of the material and the possibility to fold and slide it, already led to a number of designs for temporary housing in disaster and war stricken areas.

Nestled in the ground floor corner of the 1929 Eastern Columbia Building, Aesop Downtown, the company’s largest store to date, is situated in Los Angeles’ historic theatre district, at the edge of its Fashion District and adjacent to the famous Orpheum Theatre. Taking cue from the neighborhood culture and the empty bolts of fabric strewn about costume shops and fashion houses, the environment consists of 6-inch round cardboard tubes to create walls and furniture. This natural palette is warm and inviting, projecting a soft glow to the store’s interior and onto the street and sidewalk. Countertops are made of recycled paper, complimenting the cardboard tube wall finish. Product esting sinks are of a vintage style and floors are the natural concrete of the 1929 historic building. 1

Conscious surface, occurred in 14th Feb. 2009, is the second stage presentation of a three stage experimental form finding by “AEW, the Art of Engineering Workshop”. In this exhibition many exciting and yet stable and load-bearing forms are generated via a single folded cardboard surface through the simple folding patterns. The Dome: the big cardboard dome is only an example of the many possibilities of the folded forms“the conscious surface”. With 5.5 meter diameter, the dome is made up of 5*16=80 pieces of folded cardboards temporarily held together by means of paper clips. It can get assembled through 2 hours and disassembled in about 6 minutes. some of modules can be detached for catching light and creating airflow. All cardboards were folded by the folding table, as shown in pictures, that was created for this project and all cutting lines were cut by hand.

Together we found a place: it was an old slaughterhouse. Nice! There were rails, carriages, columns and capitals. “-It’s perfect buddy! We can recover the iron and these old fashioned wood beams and after that we have to design an out of the box kind of furniture. -Right. Maybe we can think to hang everything to the ceiling rails. So with the carriages we change the aspect of the shop every time. -Yeah man! Everything should be movable: the dressing room, the mirror. Hey, by the way for the mirror I want a two faces mirror. Baudleaire said that a real dandy should aspire to be uninterruptedly sublime, he should live and sleep in front of a mirror. -Right bro! Maybe we can imagine a dressing room as gold cage where locking up the dandy in front of a two faces mirror. -Man you are crazy! -Yes I am…… Sublime is a project that stems from the collaboration between Est platform and Nerd Srl an experienced firm in sustainable materials and technologies for furniture production. This incredible men’s wear store is divided in two areas: the first one is dedicated to the exposition of clothes while the second, smaller, is a marvelous room for men’s accessories. The first space is defined by a lattice of rails that restored the old soul of the slaughterhouse in renovated way, the second is characterized by a handmade wall-paper composed by a collage of portions 2

that belong to a more than fifteen famous paintings ( from Botticelli till Brueghel). The cardboard furniture of the shop includes: a cash desk, a radial counter, a drop ceiling/chandelier (tailored for the accessories’s room) and a cardboard wall. The main innovation consists of assembling components without any kind of glue and so in the possibility of a quick and economic substitution of any single components whenever these appear deteriorated or

Every year, at the French Institute in Barcelona the Primavera Francofona (“French – Speaking” Spring) is organized. For one night, the French – Speaking countries turn the 8 floors, the basement and the main façade of the Institute into a public space.

Specific activities to the French culture take place at each floor of the building: starting with theatre, poetry, clasical music concerts, photo exhibitions, movie screenings, chocolate, cheese or wine tastings and ending with a dance (per se) on the building façade. The space we were allocated to undertake the temporary project was right among those activities: the main staircase. In French, trait obviously stands for feature but also for stroke or drawn line. We proposed a “vertical curtain”, which would connect the events of each floor and would turn the staircase into a scene on which the space users become actors, pointing the beginning and the end of the party. As a result, the neutral transit space of the rationalist building made in 1975 by José Antonio Coderch de Setemenat, regains its representation role and develops into a vertical interaction and socializing space. The construction material is the honeycomb cardboard used in carpentry for making doors. When the exterior surfaces of these thick panels are taken out, the material changes its rigidity features, while preserving its geometrical structure. It can therefore be spread, undulated, folded, rolled, allowing the control of light and sound intensity and providing a variable transparency between floors. The diagrams explain the positioning and the amount of material used to generate the shape for each floor. We connected the structural elements with a nylon thread structure on which we fixed the cardboard modules. The material has a 3x2m surface at first, but after the transformation we get a standard 1,5 x 2 m module, which can be adapted when assembled. 3

The positioning of the modules resulted following the perspective points and the activities on each floor. The light spots and the nylon threat net are used as secondary elements in the perception of the project, to value the resulted shape and manipulate the visual and tactile features of the surface.
