“What really sets Allegheny apart is the

sense of community that permeates the whole campus, a feeling that I didn’t find anywhere else.” Rachel Robertson ’17

“Most schools were not open to combining Biology and Spanish. When I discovered Allegheny’s

emphasis on unusual combinations, I knew it was the college for me.” Mamina Norman-Wokoma ’17

“I chose Allegheny because of how effortlessly they’ve combined a rigorous education with an enjoyable and

dynamic learning experience, in terms of both social and intellectual growth.” Troy Dinga ’17

At Allegheny College, when we talk about unusual combinations, we mean it as a tremendous compliment—a compliment that recognizes the unique character of each one of us. At Allegheny, we not only recognize human complexity, we value it‌we embrace it. Look around and you’ll see a college president who studies decision-making by modern American presidents and then rolls up his sleeves for grassroots community service; an aspiring diplomat singing in the choir and building a bike path; a future physician who edits the college newspaper and pole vaults on an international stage. Unusual combinations, yes, but at Allegheny they are everyday examples of students exploring all of their talents, all of their passions. And it is our students who make Allegheny the vibrant, creative, and innovative place that it is.

“Small and Mighty Campus of Excellence” Hillel’s Foundation for Jewish Campus Life recognizes Allegheny as one of 20 “small and mighty campuses of excellence.” Why “mighty”? Innovative Jewish programming, our growing Jewish population, dedicated leadership, and a commitment to serve Jewish students of all backgrounds.

Students believe Allegheny “is very understanding of how different each student is and tries to help each student excel in his or her own way.”

Unlike most colleges and universities, Allegheny does not require a prescribed set of courses that all students must complete in advance of beginning their major. Rather, you work closely with your advisors to choose a certain number of courses from each division—the Humanities, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences divisions, and Interdivisional programs. Jump right in to the courses that interest you most!

The emphasis Allegheny places on writing is important for practical work—for example, writing grant proposals, publishing your work, and generally communicating your research.” Faculty mentorship played an important role, too, as Dr. Patrick Jackson, Allegheny’s National Scholarship Advisor, was there to guide her. “All nationally competitive awards at Allegheny start with a large pool of potential candidates; from there, they are then narrowed down.”

Students play a vital role in College decision-making. The Allegheny Student Government is an extremely active and influential organization that also coordinates programs of a co-curricular nature and sponsors more than 100 student-run clubs and organizations. Students serve on every major college committee, including faculty searches, sustainability efforts, and strategic planning. Their sought-after presence exemplifies the importance placed on student participation and represents the influence students have on the institution.

But student impact doesn’t stop there. Allegheny students are assisting communities in need, both here and abroad. They are implementing sustainable carbon- and energy-reduction strategies. They are acting as advocates for populations that need a voice. They are changing the lives of countless individuals—as students and after graduation.

@VeneskyLab Awesome fact about @alleghenycol: student groups stalk lunch meetings & take leftovers to women’s shelter & after-school programs. 30

Making an International Impact As part of his study away experience, John Watt ’15 spent the last semester interning with the largest human rights organization in India, the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL). “PUCL aims to protect the civil liberties of all people of India, especially those who aren’t in a real position of power and/or find themselves discriminated against,” says John. “I got involved in this kind of internship because I wanted to throw myself into something new… I thought it would be a great opportunity to explore my interest in politics and society from a perspective I had not possessed before.” Among his internship duties, John analyzed local periodicals for evidence of injustice toward those accused of crimes against the state. “I saw families that were devastated. When the news talks about individuals [who are suspected of a crime], you typically don’t think about their families. This was a very powerful experience for me,” he says. “Try to keep in mind that knee-jerk reactions aren’t always correct, skepticism is important, and that all people should have their basic human rights respected. I certainly will.”

“I’ve developed a desire to learn about as many subjects as I can.”

Allegheny’s campus is perched on a hill overlooking Meadville, a county seat that has been recognized as one of the Top 100 Places to Live. Meadville anchors an area of 15,000 residents and is where Allegheny students do everything from enjoying live local music to taking in the latest movies, from creating art installations to participating in service. Venture even farther afield and you’ll discover that Allegheny students live in a section of the country that most people get to see only on vacation. In an effort to show that Allegheny students support their local Meadville community, a group of students created the Meadville Challenge. This is a project that asks students to pledge to shop at local businesses for the month of September and to continue that practice throughout the year.
