You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket: it is set on a lamp stand, where it gives light to the whole house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father. Matthew 5: 14-16 Dear Treasured Alumni and Friends, As we enter the 60th anniversary of Catholic Education here at Archbishop Curley Notre Dame Prep, we need to heed the words of Jesus that we must let our light shine to glorify our heavenly Father. Our diamond jubilee gives us an opportunity to let our light shine and talk about the rich and wonderful history of Archbishop Curley High School, Notre Dame Academy and ACND Prep. The accolades of what the three schools have meant for generations of students who have walked the halls of our beloved institutions say it all: FAITH, FAMILY, EXCELLENCE. These words, the memories and the stories paint a history that is impactful for our community of faith and the surrounding community of Miami. We stand as a beacon of light to the community and a promise that God’s work on earth continues and flows through the young people we have served and will continue to serve at ACND. So we will let our light shine as we continue to be the school that has a rich 60-year tradition of quality academics, advancing the scholars of tomorrow, forming championship caliber sports teams that honor sportsmanship and competitiveness, and a nurturing soul that caters to the individual and allows them to see the needs of others around them. We are the ACND family from the first students that walked into classrooms in 1953 to the students who walk into class in 2013. A school that celebrates the differences in each of us, which in turn makes for a better learning environment and better community. We invite you to join us on campus to commemorate this wonderful anniversary. I look forward to a great year. Let us live the words of Jesus and let ACND’s light shine today and every day. Very truly yours,

A changing neighborhood enhances the educational opportunities of the verdant ACND fourteen acre campus. Come see what is new.

Congratulations to our newest graduates and welcome to your new life as alumni!

Hard work and achievements earned the Class of 2013 acceptances into colleges and universities across the country. The Class of 2013’s Valedictorian and Salutatorian open the Fall Alumni magazine with some advice for our 60th year graduating class.

Khalil Saieh ‘13, Valedictorian – 5.03 GPA (received more than $80,000 in scholarships) “Be involved in your school and make the most of opportunities that are given to you. My experience here has made me who I am today. The courses I took prepared me for what I will encounter in college and the friends I made are a big part of my life. I could not imagine my life without them.”

Khalil is attending Florida International University with plans to transfer to either the UF or FSU in two years, and finish studies in either Industrial or Computer Engineering. What influenced your post-secondary education /career decisions? Celestyn wants to become a doctor because no one in her family has ever had this opportunity. She was influenced by Dr. Ben Carson’s book, Gifted Hands in which she learned that, despite all obstacles, she too could become a doctor. Khalil was primarily influenced by conversations he had with his siblings and their friends who offered advice about studying engineering and other majors. Favorite course, club, teacher, or coach? Celestyn chose drama and Khalil chose Mrs. Medovaya. Favorite community service project? Celestyn most enjoyed volunteering at St. Vincent de Paul every Saturday morning where she helped distribute food to the homeless and needy. Khalil’s favorite project was HungerFest that taught him about fasting, world hunger, and the rewards of providing lunches to the poor. What makes ACND “home?” Celestyn – “Compared to larger schools, ACND has a more homey feeling, everyone knows your name, and I feel safe and secure when I walk around campus.” Khalil – “ACND is not just a school, it is a home. Its warmth and closeness are welcoming and make any student feel ready to learn. ACND offers something unique and that thing is family.”

Grounded In Faith

Where are they now? Celestyn is on a pre-med track at the University of Florida. She hopes to achieve a minor in music while studying to become a doctor.

ARCHBISHOP CURLEY NOTRE DAME PREP

Celestyn Angot ‘13, Salutatorian – 5.00 GPA “Happy Birthday Curley! I offer words of encouragement and say finish off strongly. Your high school journey is coming to a close, and, in the blink of an eye, you will be walking the aisle to receive your diploma. Never give up!”

The Ortiz Family My experience at Curley helped me to love “family” including my personal family and my extended families at Curley, at work, in my parish, and in charitable organizations that I am quite involved with. – Joseph A. Ortiz ‘67 This year’s motto, “Faith, Family, Excellence” defines our unique Catholic education experience for today’s students as well as the place that we call home for all of our graduates dating back to 1953. Whether you attended our Opening School Mass on August 29th, or plan to attend any of our anniversary events, we welcome you home.

Family

Joseph Ortiz graduated from Archbishop Curley in 1967. He and his wife Rita (Madonna ’67) have been married for 45 years and together they have four sons who graduated from ACND: Joseph A. Ortiz, Jr. ‘86, Nicolas’91, Mathew ’97, and Richard ’00. One of their eight grandchildren, Desi Cuadrado (son of Nicholas) graduated in 2009. Joe and his wife are Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers at their church and are active members of the community. He loves to remain involved at ACND so that he can help keep the spirit of his high school alive. After Curley, Joe attended Miami Dade Junior College for six months and then entered the apprenticeship program with the International Union of Elevator Constructors in June, 1968. He then worked for Otis Elevator in Miami for two years followed by Imperial Elevator for five years and in 1975 formed his own elevator company which he still runs today. We asked Joe to share some of his school memories with ACND and offer some words of advice for our future graduates.

What is your fondest school memory? The great wrestling teams coached by Jim Husk and the Varsity Basketball team’s trip to Gainesville to participate in the finals of the State Tournament.

Who influenced you the most while at Archbishop Curley? Brother Tom Dudley – A fun filled, loving, and caring teacher and senior class moderator. Coach Phil Petta – Taught me many life lessons and is a good friend. Coach Jim Husk – Made me the wrestler that I was.

What high school activities did you participate in? Senior Class President, Student Council, Wrestling, and Football Joe advises the Class of 2014 that success can be defined in many ways. Speaking from his own experience, not attending college did not make him a ‘failure.’ For him, success is family, hard work, and having the opportunity to run his own business. He believes that his four years at Curley taught him the life lessons needed to reach his goals. “I hope that you will take whatever you have learned and experienced at ACND and become a success in whatever career you choose,” he advises. “You may not know it now, but these are the best years of your life! And, one last thought -- always live simply, love generously, care deeply, and speak kindly.”

Br. James DePiro, CFC Visits Ireland

The three groups discovered their spiritual beginnings inspired by the work of Nano Nagle – a rich The Ruah 2013 Participants at a Mass Rock celebrating woman from Cork who lived in the mid 1700’s and liturgy at Ballygriffin founded schools for poor girls, as well as the Presentation Sisters (PBVM); and Blessed Edmund Rice – a rich man from Callan who founded schools for poor boys and founded the Congregation of Christian Brothers (CFC), as well as the Brothers of the Presentation (FPM). To this day, the three religious communities continue the work of their founders around the globe and have been coming together to collaborate in ministry. Ruah began with the group meeting in Dublin, Ireland, at the Marino Institute of Education, the former training facility for the Christian Brothers. On June 19th, all 41 participants moved on to their respective retreat experiences and Br. DePiro chose to go to Glendalough, the location of the ancestral monastic community of St. Kevin in the 11th century. The focus of this four day retreat was to explore and reflect on the pillars of Celtic spirituality – the basis of the spiritual heritage of Nano Nagle and Edmund Rice. Once reconvened, the group visited Callan the Nano Nagle Heritage Center in Ballygriffin, and Cork where they visited the Presentation Sisters and Brothers.. “This 14 day journey to and through the spiritual roots of Nano and Edmund were noted by prayer, reflection, discernment and celebration,” concluded Br. DePiro. “This truly remarkable experience allowed me to reflect on my role in the Church as I continue to minister to people at the margins.” From the founding of Archbishop Curley High School and Notre Dame Academy in 1953-54 and through the eventual merger in 1981, ACND has been enriched by the educational traditions and charism of the Priests of the Archdiocese of St. Augustine and Miami, by the Sisters, Servants of the The Br. ACND’s History Founded on Faith

On June 16th, Br. James DePiro, CFC joined 40 other pilgrims in a program called Ruah, Hebrew for ‘Spirit of God.’ Ruah is a collaborative spiritual renewal program of the Christian Brothers, the Presentation Brothers, and the Presentation Sisters. Fellow pilgrims consisted of 3 Christian Brothers, 3 Presentation Brothers, 25 Presentation Sisters and 10 associates of the three groups representing 11 countries.

ACND is now a 6 to 12 school with grades 6 to 8 added in 2010. For more information, visit www.acnd.net.

Excellence Through the years, our school has strived for ‘excellence’ in many areas such as academics, athletics, and service. Through this magazine and events such as our annual Hall of Fame, ACND Prep proudly recognizes an illustrious group of alumni – all of whom have gone on to become model citizens and, continue to live keeping in mind this year’s motto: “Faith, Family, Excellence” Speech and Debate team members Shelby Charles and Darby Vilme placed 3rd in the Duo Interpretation category at the South Florida Catholic Forensic League (SFCFL) Grand Finale Regional Championships qualifying them to participate at the National Championships in Philadelphia.

Here are some of this year’s highlights with a flashback to the past:

Many times, people have dreams but don't have the motivation or education needed to pursue them. This program will give me the chance to receive valuable lessons and information from people who have risen above their circumstances and have become great, as we all have the power to do. – Aisha Lewis, Senior Aisha (then a junior) was one of the three South Florida students selected to participate in the Disney Dreamers Academy (at Walt Disney Resort, Orlando) with comedian Steve Harvey and Essence Magazine. From 5,000 applications, Aisha was among the 100 selected students from all over the country who have demonstrated that, with hard work and a little magic, dreams can come true. Aisha hopes to attend Columbia University and study to become an OB-GYN.

The 1999 Speech and Debate Team

The Girls' Softball Team captured the District Championship by defeating Miami Country Day 15-6. And, 8th grade student, Sarisha Wiggins (now a freshman) had a stellar first year playing softball and was recognized by the Miami Herald and Miami Marlins for her efforts as an ‘outstanding student athlete.’

ACND Prep's Diversity Action Team is "Brewing hope for Haiti" by cleaning out and separating Haitian grown, damaged coffee beans from the good ones. A Miami-based proprietor then roasts the beans for sale in the United States.

The ACND Gallery of Art Art transforms lives by helping us explore the many facets of our abilities, without a worry or fear of making mistakes, or doing something incorrectly. Art helps us realize that there are many avenues to achievement. There is no ‘wrong answer’ in the art world (or the classroom), but there is an infinite amount of possibilities as to what we can create. – Lorie Setton (teaches art at the David Posnak Hebrew Day School in Davie and is a resident artist at Yo Space Gallery in Little Haiti.) On Saturday, September 14th, 7 teaching artists from Miami and Broward schools showcased their work at the 2nd Annual Teaching Artist Exhibit - “Art Transforms Lives.” This year’s participants were: Alena Beasley (Our Lady of the Lakes); Yunier Cervino Oliver (ACND Prep); Caryne Havican Mender (DASH/ACND Prep); Lorie Setton (David Posnak Hebrew Day School); Silvana Soriano (Arts for Learning); Kerry Ware (St. Patrick); and Catherine Wichmann (St. Anthony.) Caryne Mender, ACND’s gallery manager served as curator. Amanda Sanfilippo, Development Associate from Locust Projects located in the Miami Design District spoke about how art has transformed the areas neighboring ACND Prep, and the LAB (Locust Art Builders) summer program for high school students. Visit www.acnd.net to see photos from this event. Lisa Boccard ’80 presents, “The Cure Package” - Photos by Lynn Parks Lisa speaks and presents her exhibit to coincide with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. When 29, she was diagnosed with Stage Three breast cancer and has been in ongoing treatment again since 2003 for metastatic breast cancer. A tireless cancer advocate, Lisa is also the author of "The Cure Package", a photo exhibit depicting her travels with breast cancer. She appeared on the Rosie O'Donnell Show and represented the state of Florida in 1993 by presenting President Clinton with 2.6 million signatures requesting the resources needed to end the breast cancer epidemic. She is a co-founder and a member of the National Breast Cancer Coalition and serves on several committees for the American Cancer Society. In 2003, her brother Vincent and his wife Terry founded the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund that helps provide funding for screening mammograms for women who cannot afford them. Silvia Lizama ’75 presents, “Sights of Construction” This exhibit, curated by Tracie Heller, is a collection of photographic images of endless tracts of dirt stretching toward horizons set amidst the exquisite drama of tropical skies. Silvia has turned her camera lens to a scene so common the brain has learned to erase; the omnipresent barren acres of earth awaiting construction of highways, shopping malls, office parks and subdivisions. Stripped of vegetation and other identifying content, the photographs contain an ambiguous sense of time and place. Her work leaves the viewer with a sense of discovery and a wonderment of what was and what will be. Carl Juste ’81 presents, “A Retrospective” Carl will present a selection of his work dating back to his first exhibit at the ACND Gallery. Although he intended to be an engineer, he could not ignore the photographic inner voice that had spoken to him since childhood. Responding to a clear relationship he shared with the visual world, Carl vigorously pursued photojournalism and, since 1991, has served his community through his work at the Miami Herald. He has received numerous awards for his work from Picture of the Year, Pulitzer Prize, Society for News Design, Best of Photojournalism, and the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award. Carl is founder of both the IPC Visual Lab and Iris Photo Collective.

Other Exhibits: 5th Annual Middle School Art Festival - Exhibit runs from January 29 to February 28, 2014 Budding middle school artists representing Miami-Dade Catholic schools participate in a professional style exhibit with their artwork evaluated by Design District, Wynwood, and Downtown art professionals. All students are awarded at an opening reception event held in conjunction with National Catholic Schools Week. ACND’s Inaugural Artist and Son/Daughter Aspiring Artist Exhibit - Opening Reception: Saturday, May 4, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. A special end of year tribute to honor mothers and fathers who work as professional artists. Participants (selected through a call for entries) will exhibit a piece of their work alongside one of their child’s creations or a collaborative art piece.

“Service to the Community is the best work of life.” – David Wessel ‘56 For the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps, Archbishop Curley graduate David Wessel received a special award for his dedication to the Corp. At a large, celebration event held in New Orleans, David spoke about his many adventures. He was also able to join a few thousand people who gathered in Washington D.C. at the National celebration of 50 years of Peace Corps Volunteers and their missions. Following graduation from Curley, David would graduate from Loyola University in 1962 with a degree in history and minor in sociology and political science. Shortly after, David received a telegram inviting him to join the Peace Corps. In pursuit of adventure, David applied, took a test, and soon after, was accepted to participate in an eight-week Peace Corp training program. He would become the first Peace Corps Volunteer from the state of Louisiana. His years of service began in Puerto Rico and, later, continued in Colombia where he was part of a group that put together a tomato co-op, latrine program, and helped build a road for better farm product movement between rural areas and more populated villages. David is most proud of helping to build a small library and, in 1994, on the 30th anniversary of service in the Peace Corps, he returned to the Colombian town. To his delight, the library had blossomed. “There were kids working at computers, it was incredible,” he remarked. David’s experience with the Peace Corps changed his life for the better and he considers all of his adventures to be life lessons. “I learned that everyone is of value and a member of the community...that what is good for one person or group must be beneficial to the whole, or it is selfish.”

Following graduation from Curley, Don attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York where he would earn a degree in Civil Engineering. He served for 11 years in the Army as a Combat Engineer completing various assignments around the world. After leaving the military, Don moved his family to Central Florida where he worked for 5 years with the Florida Department of Transportation. He would later become the Public Works Director for the City of Riviera Beach and, in 2007, became the County Public Works Director for Putnam County. Don and his wife are now retired.
