Dear Friends, Aspiration is a defining characteristic of the Archbishop Curley Notre Dame Community. We have been called repeatedly to move into unchartered waters. Notre Dame Academy and Archbishop Curley High School emerged with the passing of the parish high schools – St. Mary’s, Gesu’, Sts. Peter and Paul, and St. Patrick’s. The new high schools broke the race barrier, later welcomed the Pedro Pan youngsters, and eventually merged into co-education.

Choosing life at ACND has involved a major advancement effort. This magazine, the web site, the “There’s a school for that!” campaign and a continuous flow of press releases describing the vibrant activity on campus are bearing fruit. Our efforts have attained national recognition with significant grants for campus improvement from the National Football League and Major League Baseball. Additionally, our faculty welcomes the enhanced professional development opportunities that have come with our recognition as a Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History Affiliate School and our partnership in the North American Network of Edmund Rice Schools.

Student and family satisfaction is especially high and has been affirmed in the re-accreditation report of the Quality Assurance Team of the AdvancedED Southern Association of Colleges and Schools’ Council on Accreditation and School Improvement this past year. Recent graduates and alumni from decades past are proclaiming the ACND message and a new generation of Knights and Lady Knights are responding with enthusiasm. Aspirations T he
resonance of soccer fever can still be felt both worldwide and close to home. 2010 marked the 19th FIFA World Cup as well as the highly anticipated 2nd Annual ACND Soccer Tournament held at the end of May! Eight teams with over 80 participants vied for the 2010 Curley Championship Cup and, for the first time, over 20 Lady Knights competed for the 2010 Ladies Cup. The day’s main event proved to be the “Legends” game where players in the 40+ age group rallied together to demonstrate that ACND’s legacy for great athletics began years ago!
With the opening of its doors, the 6-7-8 Brother Rice Academy hopes to allow younger students to prepare themselves for Catholic high school in the way that the blessed Edmund Rice envisioned education. The Congregation of Christian Brothers believes that the greatest national resources are the minds and hearts of our children. They believe that the quality of the education provided to children has a direct and profound effect upon the quality of life we all will share in the next century. The greatest investment that we can make, as a society, is to provide our children with a strong, value-centered education. We must create the structure that will enable these young people to grow into healthy citizens who can contribute positively to our community. The Congregation of Christian Brothers has successfully provided this education for almost 200 years in 250 schools and colleges throughout the world.
With thanks to Pat Collins (’96), Billy Davis (‘86) and a group of alumni supporters, the event proved to be an enjoyable and memorable one for people of all ages. The tournament boasted activities suitable for all including BBQ specialties by Greater Miami Caterers and Football Subs, DJ, bounce house and, of course, some actionpacked games! Just as no other sporting event unites nations quite like the FIFA World Cup, so will this new ACND event prove to be a great way for alumni to stay connected. ACND and FIFA share a similar mission working for the next generation.
The continued strength of ACND’s future will be dependent on every one of us ‘coming to the field.’ From the newest alums featured at the beginning of this magazine through to two featured alums celebrating their 40th and 50th anniversary, ACND’s success will reveal itself in the stories told.
In his remarks to the Sports for Peace Gala in Johannesburg, United Nation’s Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon says, “As we cheer the teams on the football pitch, let us remember: achieving the MDGs is not a spectator sport. It takes every one of us on the field.” MDG’s refers to the Millenium Development Goal - eight internationally-agreed targets which aim to reduce poverty, hunger, maternal and child deaths, disease, inadequate shelter and gender inequality by 2015. Mr. Ban concludes, “If we work together, we can score a victory over poverty. We can defeat ignorance, discrimination and want. We can ensure every man and woman, every girl and boy has an opportunity on the playing field of life.”

Welcome New Alums May 15, 2010, families and friends celebrated Othen Saturday, success of 87 graduating seniors at Corpus Christi Church. Class Valedictorian Adela Marie Hurtado was a member of the National Honor Society, Support the Troops, and Book Club. She received the Presidential Academic Excellence Award and Presidential Volunteer Gold Service Award for completing over 250 hours of community service. Adela is now a freshman at New York University.

Salutatorian Laura Angela D’Ovidio was on the volleyball and softball teams. She was a member of Youth For Life, Support the Troops, National Honor Society, and Edmund Rice Community. She received the Presidential Academic Excellence Award and Presidential Volunteer Gold Service Award. Adela Marie Hurtado and Laura is now a freshman at Laura Angela DʼOvidio Barry University. The 57th graduating class’ accomplishments include a NYU Martin Luther King Scholar, two University of Miami Dickinson scholars, two FIU presidential scholars and two UCF Pegasus Gold scholars, 8 district championships in 4 different sports with 5 separate teams, numerous appearances at state tournaments, and produced 1st team all-county and state athletes in 3 sports, 5000 hours of community service and raising thousands of dollars in mission money and organizing relief efforts for disasters at home and abroad.

New Chapters: The Velasco Siblings Prior to graduation, Jessica Velasco received the Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Student Award. Recognized for her ability to “lead instead of follow,” she has set a great example for future ACND student leaders by distinguishing herself in roles of leadership and community building that include participating in the National ACTION Student Leadership Workshop sponsored by the Christian Brothers and the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Program. Jessica is now a freshman at Iona College in New Rochelle, NY.

Jessica’s older brother Jay (’06) graduated this year from Cornell University’s College of Human Ecology with a major in Policy Analysis & Management (PAM). He is recipient of the Scott Maynes award which is given to a senior PAM major who shows “the greatest potential to contribute to free market functioning and consumer welfare.” Jay is on the 2010 Dean’s List and received the Robinson Award for Academic Excellence. He is currently employed as a Human Capital Analyst for Deloitte Consulting in New York City and hopes to eventually return to school and earn an MBA or MPP.

Celebrating Achievements A t the Spring Athletic Banquet held on May 20, 2010
Students, faculty, and members of the law community celebrated the high school’s 5th annual Red Mass and Law Symposium on Saturday, April 17th. Celebrant Fr. David Russell encouraged the assembled members of the legal profession to reaffirm their commitment ACND Principal, Br. Patrick Sean to justice and faith and Moffett, CFC, senior Pedro Porro students to learn from their and senior Adela Hurtado stand example. Following the with the Honorable Beatrice A. Red Mass and breakfast, Butchko (NDA ʼ81), a Notre Dame Academy alum and judge in Notre Dame Academy alum Floridaʼs 11th Judicial Circuit, and Florida Circuit Judge, during the 5th annual ACND the Honorable Beatrice A. Red Mass and Law Symposium. Butchko (NDA `81), led the assembly in a lively conversation on the theme of the symposium: ‘Justice Issues of the New Millennium.'

In March, 11 ACND students were inducted into the National Honor Society. Chosen for their outstanding scholarship, leadership, service, and character, the new inductees were Sophia Anilus, Vanessa Aristide, Anne-Christie Gedeon, Michael Green, Jenieve Wright, Christina Blanchard, Jessica Blanchard, Ciddjyne Chery, Josie Norteus, Jesus Vasquez, and Celine Wassaf.
The Cross-Country Team had a very successful season qualifying and competing for the sixth consecutive year at the Florida Athletic High School Association (FHSAA) State Finals held this past November at the Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City. Team member, Sanjay Singh set a new school record of 16:50 for the 5K distance (3.1 miles) and finished seventeenth in the state. Freshman Fernando Cruz proudly displays the trophy he brought home for the 2010 United States Chess Federation School Championship in Columbus Ohio. The event brought together 1300 young chess enthusiasts from around the country, including the ACND team and moderator Dr. Lawrence Goodall.
Led by Music Director, Mr. R. Lee Johanson, the ACND musicians performed on stage at the University of Tampa on April 30, 2010 following adjudication as an ‘Instrumental Concert Ensemble.’
Alum Cynthia Massillon (ACND ’08) has received the prestigious Louis D. Brandeis Social Justice ‘World of Work’ (WOW) Fellowship from Brandeis University for her commitment to social justice, her personal integrity and the skills she has developed for addressing social issues. The highly selective fellowship supports the recipients in performing an unpaid, full-time summer internship in an agency whose mission addresses issues of social justice. Cynthia will continue her social justice work with the Empowering Through Education (ETE) Camp, a grassroots organization developed by Brandeis students that offers a free, five-week academic summer camp for children in Hinche, Haiti. Cynthia, who is pursuing a joint degree in Politics/Legal Studies and Education was also awarded the highly selective Gates Millennium Scholarship her senior year at ACND.
Parents and supporters of participating high school bands were delighted by the students’ performance that clearly earned them a ‘Superior Rating’ and as a reward for their hard work, the Troubadours spent the rest of the day at Busch Gardens before returning home.

s. Kimberley Lumpkin, an ACND Reading Specialist and member of the Language Arts faculty, and Mr. David Monaco, an ACND Community Studies faculty member, were chosen out of ten recipients to be granted the prestigious 2010 Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History Scholarly Fellowship. Ms. Lumpkin will use the research fellowship at the University of Boulder in Colorado to conduct research on Environmental History of the United States and how it has influenced society. As an avid researcher of U.S. History, specifically the Founding Era which encompasses the French and Indian War and extends through the Presidency of George Washington, Mr. Monaco will join a research group at Columbia University in New York City examining the English view of slavery during the Revolutionary period. By focusing his literature on the writings of the first abolitionists, he also is interested in discovering the different ways the Colonies viewed slavery.

John Corcoran headed the 13th annual “Summer Fun Runs” where up to 36 participants walked or ran courses each evening designed for all ability levels.

On April 22 and 23rd over 50 students from Archbishop Curley Notre Dame High School as well as six 8th grade students from St. Mary’s Cathedral performed Disney’s version of “Beauty and the Beast” for families and friends. One week later, the Troubadours and Knightingales held their Spring Concert performing various works such as the Suite from “Battlestar Galactica” and Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf.” Finally, on Memorial Day weekend, the Troubadour’s were invited for the second year by the Miami Shores Village Place committee to perform for the community during the promotion of the business district at their first annual Village Walk as well perform with the Miami Shores Community Band at the Memorial Service recognizing the living and deceased veterans of the village.
6-7-8 Brother Rice Academy The 6-7-8 Brother Rice Academy opened its doors on August 23rd. Currently registered students were admitted based on the criteria of working at or above grade level and having the skills and enthusiasm to profit from this unique educational opportunity. The curriculum, while based on the Florida Sunshine Standards, is shaped to respond to the unique interests and capacity of each student. Enrichment rather than acceleration is the guiding principle. Students both individually and in small groups are encouraged to explore subjects in greater depth and to seek unique applications of what they are learning. A typical day includes, an extended school day in which students are encouraged to develop skills in at least one other world language, to learn a musical instrument and to participate in community service projects; individualized programming and small group engagement; advanced level courses in mathematics, science and languages; and access to the full resources of the ACND Prep campus and activities (including: music, art studio, speech and debate, journalism, cross country, soccer, football, basketball, wrestling, volleyball, baseball, softball tennis, track and field).
Developing The ‘Total-Student’ All Year Round The Summer Knights Athletic camp offered students between ages 8 and 17 an opportunity to train in the areas of basketball, football, volleyball, tennis, and softball. The Performing Arts camp focused on theatre and music performance skills culminating in a community production inspired by the music of the 1920’s titled, “Club Harlem.” The Remedial Summer Academic Program offered currently registered students an opportunity to improve a particular subject area, and Foundations Program gave a group of incoming freshmen an opportunity to strengthen their math and reading skills. Kathlynn Pierre-Griff (’99) is a Research Associate for the Fischler School of Education and Human Services at Nova Southeastern University. She previously worked with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Office of Community Services as an Educational Specialist in the Office of Parental Involvement. Currently a doctoral student at Nova, Kathylyn completed her undergraduate studies at the University of South Florida, a certificate in French Civilization from the University of Paris, La Sorbonne, and a masters degree in Human Resource Development and Urban Education from Florida International University.

The ACND Advisory Council is made up of primarily school alumni who bring a wealth of expertise in areas that will improve enrollment, facilities, events, grants and foundations, and finance. Members are nominated by the Council for a term of three years. In April, ACND fulfilled the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Council/ Accreditation and School Improvement (CASI) re-accreditation requirements. Founded in 1895, SACS CASI accredits over 13,000 schools and school systems throughout the United States and overseas. To demonstrate educational quality, accreditation is used by education providers of all types and serving all ages of students from toddlers to adults. Accreditation engages the school community in meeting high quality standards, implementing a continuous improvement, and engaging in quality assurance through internal and external review.

Advancement Team Members Lisa Morales, Public Relations Specialist (news@acnd.net): Lisa has an Honors BA in Cinema Studies/English Literature from the University of Toronto, ARCT status in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the Royal Conservatory of Music, and certificate in Business Marketing from Ryerson University, Toronto. She has worked in public relations as student spokesperson for Canadians Concerned About South Africa and Niko Cosmetics, and for Carder Gray Advertising as Assistant to the Creative Director. Since moving to Miami she has taught grade school, piano and early childhood music, and is the current Vice-President of Publicity for the Miami Music Teachers Association. Her written work supporting the importance of the arts in education has been featured in the Davie, Ranches, and Weston Magazine.
We in the Advancement Department are here to serve you. Our team is responsible for philanthropic giving, public relations, alumni affairs, and special events. Among our many activities, we are in the process of updating the alumni directory in collaboration with the company HARRIS CONNECT. While the school has accurate contact information for most alumni, not all have remembered to report their various moves. Please respond when you receive your alumni information update request in the mail; or go to www.acnd.net and use the online update form. Further plans of the new advancement department include, the continued publication of a semiannual alumni magazine, and a constant flow of communication regarding school events and social opportunities via networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Peter Sahwell, Director of Advancement (psahwell@acnd.net): Peter has worked for more than 20 years in fields of social services, higher education, and philanthropy. Before coming to ACND, he spent ten years as Director of Foundation Relations at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Previously, he evaluated grant proposals and made grants in the Community Initiatives Program at the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. While living in New York City he worked for an agency that provides homeless housing and social services. Peter has a B.A. in English and a Master’s in International Affairs from Columbia University, and served as a Peace Corps teacher in Kenya. He lives in Surfside with his wife, Maria, and their two children.
David Gerhardt (’77), Admissions Director (dgerhardt@acnd.net): David graduated with a B.A. from Alfred University, NY magna cum laude and attended the University of Miami Law School, J.D. For over twenty-five years he practiced law primarily in the areas of workers’ compensation, claimant, and defense. David and his wife Mary have two children who attend St. Rose of Lima School. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus and the South Florida Emerald Society. Julie Martinez-Araujo, Advancement Assistant (jmartinez@acnd.net): Julie is a graduate of Miami Dade College. For twenty-five years she worked for the Miami Herald and, prior to joining ACND, for the Pastoral Center, Archdiocese of Miami. Julie enjoys working with the public and making people feel good about their visit to ACND. She also enjoys watching the students grow and eventually graduate from the school.
Amanda Gonzalez, Alumni Relations and Events Coordinator (alums@acnd.net): Amanda graduated from ACND in 1999 and has a BA in International Studies and a Masters Certificate in Museum Studies from Florida International University. She is currently completing a Masters in Public History. Amanda has worked for WSVN Channel 7, the Historical Museum of Southern Florida, and the United Way of Miami-Dade.

With 29 years of dedicated service, Mrs. Benjamin was one of the most respected faculty members on campus. In 2006, she was recognized as “Teacher of the Year” by the Department of Schools of the Archdiocese of Miami.

Mrs. Diaz came to ACND as a teacher in 1984 choosing ACND as the future high school for her own children. After a leave of absence in 1986 to dedicate time to her children, she returned in 1983 to teach and chair in the Science Department and was appointed to Vice Principal for Academics in 2005. In retirement, she plans to travel with her husband Jose and devote more time to her work with the Respect Life movement.

Brother James DePiro will return to an administrative role as ACND’s new Vice Principal for Academics having previously served as the Area Coordinator for Mathematics and Science. Br. DePiro is a favorite mathematics teacher and soccer coach. Before coming to ACND in August of 2000, he was the Principal of Essex Catholic High School in New Jersey.

ARCHBISHOP CURLEY NOTRE DAME 2010 HALL OF FAME One of the most important missions of Catholic schools is to form students into future Catholic leaders. ACND proved that this mission was accomplished based on the five most recent inductees into the Hall of Fame. They were: •
Dennis Michael McCarron, class of 1965, is executive director of the Florida Catholic Conference;
•
Liz Balmaseda, class of 1977, is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winning journalist;
•
Ed O’Dell, class of 1968, is a former Miami television anchor;
•
Bruce Keller, class of 1968, is a business entrepreneur; and
•
Jim Husk is a legendary wrestling coach who led Curley to several championships.
All were honored at a dinner-dance held on April 24th at the Eden Roc Hotel in Miami Beach. Masters of Ceremony were Spero Canton andHelen Aguirre-Ferre ’75. Alum Spotlight The Centennial Celebration of the
ACND Alum Charles Justiz, Ph.D. (Class of 1970) retired June 1, 2010 as a highlyrespected NASA instructor and examiner pilot, but begins a whirlwind adventure launching his book “Specific Impulse” – a scientific thriller! Charles is a native of Miami whose parents originate from Havana, Cuba. Following graduation from Archbishop Curley, Charles Justiz joined the U.S. Air Force Academy where he graduated in 1973. With an interest in the mechanics of flight, the Air Force made Charles a test pilot at Eglin Air Force Base and by 1980 he joined NASA to train astronauts. He also holds a doctorate degree from the University of Houston in Thermo Physics and Plasma Dynamics and is a NASA Doctoral Fellow. He lives in Seabrook, Texas, with his wife, Dayna Steele (also an author) and their three sons.
Statue of Liberty and the return of Halley’s Comet inspired glass artist Stan Saran to create this glass tribute to our great lady in New York Harbor. This stained and etched glass artwork was selected by the US Department of the Interior, National Park Service and was displayed in the 5th Avenue lobby of the Empire State Building in 1986. “I stepped on the artistic MERRY-GOROUND when I was 21 years old and have been involved in various artistic disciplines for the past 48 years. If I’ve learned anything while in the business of art, and it is a business, is that experience is the best teacher and to always put your faith in God to lead the way.” In his written memoirs, Stan recalls his career as musician, artist, and writer. During the 1960’s he moved from Miami to Chicago to record music with entertainer Rick Martin, a 41-piece orchestra, and backup singers for Universal Recording Studios. By the early 1970’s, he began designing clothes that sold in upscale department stores such as Bloomingdales and Saks 5th Avenue and designed textiles for famous designers Oscar de la Renta, Pierre Cardin, and Anthony Muto. In 1998, the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York commented on his unique textile printing process: “The garments are dynamic and timeless with an exotic ethereal quality, and the textiles from which they are made are not only beautiful, but innovative and inventive." In 1998, Stan settled in Marco Island where he opened his own glass studio and gallery. For 17 years, he has carved glass artworks of which many have been installed in some of the most elegant and costly homes throughout the United States and Canada including famous celebrity Judd Hirsch of “Taxi.”
When asked about his days at Curley, Charles can recall vivid memories. In referring to his Calculus teacher Mr. Blitzer he recalls, “This class was not your traditional class where they bored through the book and tested at a pace prescribed in some curriculum. This guy actually loved this stuff! He brought the subject to life for me and made me understand why we should even bother with such trivia. Because of him, I understood calculus better than most of my fellow cadets when I got to the U.S. Air Force Academy. It was an immeasurable advantage to a budding engineer.”
During a visit that celebrated his 50th anniversary since graduating from ACND, Stan had an opportunity to retrace his steps down the halls of Curley he recalls many great memories. He is very grateful for the education received in Catholic school. He says, “Over the years, it became evident to me, that the religious and academic training I received from the religious and lay teachers in the hallowed halls of Curley, gave me a solid foundation to go out into the big, bad world and succeed.” Graduates then and now must overcome the challenges that accompany this transition period. Stan concludes his recollection with some words of advice to this year’s graduates advising, “To all those graduating Curley this year, 2010, be content that when you leave Curley you will have the social tools and oral wisdom to take on the world and make it a better place for all of us.”
Two other Curley teachers influenced his appreciation of literature. Spanish teacher Dr. Garcia-Montez, a former Cuban lawyer and Bay of Pigs prisoner of war, would bring history to life as well as quote entire pages of Spanish poems. To this day, Charles occasionally refers to his copy of “La vida es sueno” (Life Is A Dream) studied in high school and values that Dr. Garcia-Montez taught him to appreciate the texture and timbre of the written Spanish word. Charles also refers to classical English literature teacher Br. Vincent de Paul, CSC: “Because of him, I have a dozen Shakespeare soliloquies stuck in my head. Although painful at the time, I thank him almost daily now.”

Alum Notes Matt Pendleton ’01 was married to Leslie Hahn on April 9, 2010 at Palm Valley Gardens in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. Dean Taylor ’01 was in their wedding party.
Liam James Wouters Almeida son of Gina Wouters (’00) and David Almedia was born on November 30, 2009 at 12:40pm Dennis Wouters ’98 is engaged to Michele LoPresti and plan to get married on May 14, 2011.
Richard Tejedor ’74 is the new Assistant Professor of Medicine in Pulmonary/ Critical Care Section at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. He received his fellowship training at LSUHSC and is boarded in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine. For the past 10 years, he was Chief of Pulmonary Medicine and Respiratory Therapy at the Biloxi VA Medical Center. Rick will attend on the Pulmonary Consult and Critical Care Services at both Ochsner Kenner and University Hospitals.

Br. Martin Joseph Fragala, CFC was laid to rest on Friday, July 16, 2010 in Schenectady, New York. Br. Fragala joined the ACND faculty in 1990, having previously served at Tampa Catholic. Until 1999 he taught theology and became engaged in a variety of activities working in the Sabal Palm Tutoring Program, moderating the National Honor Society, and directing of the ACND bookstore. He was a founding member of the mission of the Brothers to post-Katrina New Orleans. His work at Café Reconcile, a career development center for young former convicts, earned him special recognition from church and civic leaders of the city. This year marked his golden anniversary of membership in the Congregation of Christian Brothers. His approach to teaching was best described in his address to the ACND Class of 1991 where he stated, “Have faith in yourself. Think good things about yourself. Invite God into your life and always have hope in what you do.”

Recent gifts of the a full church organ and an electonic keyboard from Victor Pianos came as another expression of the families enthusiasm for promoting music at Archbishop Curley Notre Dame. Mr. Victor Tibaldeo, Sr. is an ACND alumni parent and grandparent. Victor Tibaldeo, Jr. graduated from ACND in 1976, his daughters were also Knights: Lisa Tibaldo DiRaimondo, Christina 2003 and Jeanna 2008.
IN MEMORIAM Manuel Alvarez de la Campa, father of Carmen, Bertha and Emma, Notre Dame Academy classes of '78 ’70 and ’69 respectively, passed away on May 31, 2010. Joseph James Zavertnik, father of John Zavertnik passed away in June Berta Dieguez, mother of Angel Dieguez `99 passed away in May, 2010 Ellena Mary Storti, NDA Class of 1974 passed away on October 24, 2009. Ellena along with her twin sister Ellen Theresa and younger sister Mary attended St. Rose of Lima and later Notre Dame Academy. Ibis Diaz, NDA Class of 1980 passed away on Wednesday August 12, 2009. She was considered by her classmates to be a dear friend and magnificent lady! Steve Longo, Archbishop Curley, Class of 1957 passed away on Monday, August 9, 2010.
