The Montana Historical Society is celebrating its 150th birthday and we invite you to share this special year with us.

A

s the steward of Montana’s stories and its history, the Montana Historical Society is the best place to begin a Montana adventure. Whether you are a visitor or a resident, we warmly welcome you to explore the exhibits that tell Montana’s stories, search your Montana roots in our research center, and take home Montana treasures and books from our unique gift shop.

Founded in 1865, just months after the creation of Montana Territory, the Montana Historical Society is the second oldest historical society west of the Mississippi. Unlike other similar organizations, the Montana Historical Society was born during the days of the gold rush as the state’s very foundations were being laid. Its inception was not a nostalgic look backwards at events past. With astounding foresight, our founders realized they were living history as it happened and wanted the events remembered. The society’s initial purpose was “to collect and arrange facts in regard to the early history” of the territory. Today, it does that and much, much more.

Collections of all kinds fill its galleries, library, archives, and storage facilities. The society’s six programs are committed to education, research, and preservation that reach across the state in many ways. The research center includes 95 percent of all newspapers published in Montana; 18,000 reels of microfilm; 14,000 maps; 32,000 books and pamphlets; and 500,000 photographic images. Our publications include the award-winning quarterly Montana The Magazine of Western History. The museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate, collects, preserves, and interprets fine art, as well as historical, archaeological, and ethnological artifacts related to Montana and its adjoining geographic region. It houses over 48,000 artifacts as well as textiles and extensive art collections. Its diverse 6

exhibits, both temporary and permanent, are world class.

Your Montana museum experience might begin with the Montana Homeland Exhibit, tracing the prehistory of the state from the time when buffalo roamed the prairie and early inhabitants hunted with stone tools. As you work your way through Montana’s story, you’ll pass through Native American lifeways, the fur trapping era, the turbulent gold rush and vigilante period, cattle and sheep ranching, the struggle for statehood, the advent of the railroad, the technological advances of the twentieth century, and much more.

If you are a fan of “Cowboy Artist” C. M. Russell (1864-1926), the society’s Mackay Gallery of Russell Art features 2,000 square feet of major oils, watercolors, pen and inks, pencil sketches, bronzes, sculptures, and illustrated letters by Montana’s most celebrated and beloved artist. If Russell is not familiar to you, this gallery is the place to fall in love with him. Russell lived and loved the cowboy life and captured it in the various mediums of his art.

The gallery includes some of Russell’s finest work expressing the quintessential spirit that is Montana.

“Neither Empty Nor Unknown” offers a kaleidoscopic look at Montana when Lewis and Clark trekked through the state in 1805 and 1806. This groundbreaking exhibit is set against a backdrop of unforgettable landscapes where grasses grew tall, stars shone like diamonds, and people lived off the land and prospered. Montana’s topography, animal life, and native plants surround the visitor, immersing him in the natural world while interactive displays and “stations” pack the 4,600 square feet.

Explore cultural and environmental perspectives through featured sites that were places of spiritual and/or economic importance to Montana’s Native peoples. They were also crucial to the Lewis and Clark Expedition. These areas provide a common thread and the key to understanding Montana’s Native peoples and counters Lewis and Clark’s impressions that Montana was largely uninhabited.

“Big Medicine” is perhaps the Montana Historical Society’s most visited exhibit. This rare white buffalo, born on the National

Bison Range on Montana’s Flathead Indian Reservation in 1933, was the culmination of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes’ efforts to recover a bison population for their reservation.

Big Medicine was a true white buffalo, not an albino. He had blue eyes, tan hooves, a brown topknot and a snow-white coat.

At his prime he weighed 1,900 pounds. He was so revered and well cared that he lived to a great age. In the early 1950s, the Montana Historical Society arranged for Big Medicine to be preserved upon his death and moved to the state’s museum. That came to pass in 1959. Because of his age, Big Medicine’s coat was in poor condition. Despite its white color, the worn hide speaks of the many years Big Medicine saw and reinforces the ageless power many believe he still possesses.

The society’s most recent exhibit tells the story of “Our Forgotten Pioneers: The Chinese in Montana.” It promises an unprecedented glimpse at a little understood chapter in the history of the state and the West. The western gold rushes initially drew a male population from the province of Guangdong in coastal China where famine, overpopulation, and civil war claimed hundreds of thousands of lives. These western sojourners came seeking their fortunes, and by 1870 comprised ten percent of Montana’s territorial population.

taxes, and provided services. The male-only population, however, necessarily dwindled as they returned to China or died here on foreign soil. Their abandoned neighborhoods fell victim to urban renewal. Their culture, never well understood, became the stuff of myth and legend. “Forgotten Pioneers” traces a people whose history in the West is only now beginning to emerge.

The society offers something for everyone, even the youngest visitors. “Neither Empty Nor Unknown” features a hidden mouse that appears along the pathways through native places. A real buffalo robe in the “Homeland” draws children into the tangible past, and a wall of interactives in “Forgotten Pioneers” teaches the art of Chinese calligraphy. But best of all, a hands-on gallery just for the younger set encourages children to try on, try out, and play with all kinds of touchable artifacts.

The Montana Historical Society also offers tours of the nearby Montana State Capitol and maintains the must-see Original Governor’s Mansion, a fully furnished house museum that was home to Montana’s governors from 1913 to 1959.

What: The twin spires of the Cathedral of St. Helena may be the Queen City’s most recognizable landmark. The cornerstone for the cathedral was laid in 1908, and took nearly 20 years to complete the building. The church is modeled after Vienna’s Votive Church of the Sacred Heart, in the Gothic style. The Cathedral is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and was built with limestone from Bedford, Indiana, considered to be a sturdier stone than Montana sandstone.

An extensive restoration of the Cathedral has been taking place since 2002.

HELENA FIRE TOWER What: One of the few remaining wooden fire towers in the nation. Built in 1874 after a fire destroyed most of the downtown business district. Nicknamed the “Guardian of the Gulch.” Where: Follow Cruse Avenue south just past where it crosses Broadway – the Fire Tower will be up to the left.

last CHANCE GULCH HELENA’S WALKING MALL What: The state’s only downtown, outdoor walking mall featuring restaurants and shopping. The mall marks the site where gold was first discovered in Helena in 1864. The site takes its name from the Four Georgians who discovered gold in this area. Helena was their “last chance” to discover gold before giving up and returning home. The Walking Mall runs from 6th Avenue to North Broadway on Last Chance Gulch.

HELENA ARBORETUM What: More than 53 acres of various plant species labeled with genus and species names.

LAST CHANCE TOUR TRAIN What: One-hour narrated tour of Helena attractions ranging from the Queen City’s oldest cabin to the Victorian mansions of former millionaires. No tours on Sunday.

LEWIS AND CLARK COUNTY COURTHOUSE What: Home to the courtrooms and chambers for the First Judicial District’s judges. The historic, four-story building was constructed between 1885 and 1887.

It was originally a full story taller, but the earthquakes of 1935 required the removal of the building’s clock tower. During the 19th century, the building was the territorial and the state capitol. LEWIS AND CLARK LIBRARY What: Established in 1868, the Lewis and Clark Library is the oldest library in the state. It features books, DVDs, CDs, magazines, videos, computers and more.

HIKING AND BACK PACKING

From the heights of the Continental Divide to Canyon Ferry Lake, the Helena area offers an opportunity for fresh air and sunshine, no matter what your passion.

MOUNT HELENA CITY PARK Mount Helena City Park, listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, is Helena’s most noticeable landmark, featuring many trails of various levels of difficulty across the park’s 630 acres.

Maps of those trails are located at the base of the mountain in a kiosk at the Adams Street parking lot (turn right off of Park Avenue and follow the directional signs through Reeder’s Village).

TROUT CREEK CANYON TRAIL This easy, three-mile trail provides spectacular views of steep-walled limestone formations within a canyon northeast of Helena in the Big Belt Mountains. From Helena, proceed northeast on Highway 280 to York.

Continue driving northeast past York to the end of the road and Vigilante Campground.

REFRIGERATOR CANYON This canyon located northeast of Helena is a fantastic destination on a hot summer day. Temperatures within the small canyon remain cool year round. Travel 16 miles east of Helena on State Highway 280 to York, then 8 miles north of York on County Road 4 to Nelson, then east on Forest Road approximately 4 miles to signed trailhead.

CASEY MEADOWS TRAIL This easy walk in the Elkhorn Mountains features a gradual elevation gain of about 1,300 feet on the three-mile route to the meadow. Other trails intersect at the meadow for hikers seeking additional recreational opportunities. From Helena, take Interstate 15 south to Montana City and turn right at the school. Follow this road past Saddle Mountain Estates to Forest Road 294 and the Casey Meadows Trailhead.

CROW CREEK FALLS To get to Crow Creek Falls, travel south to Townsend on Highway 12/287 for 30 miles to Indian Creek Road (FR 360).

Follow this road for approximately 11 miles to the junction with West on Creek Road (FR 4031). Travel about 2.5 miles on FR 4031 until its junction with Weasel Creek Road (FR 405). Follow FR 405 to the Eagle Guard Station. The trailhead is west of this station. From the trail-head, hikers can take two routes to the falls: (1) Follow Trail 112 for approximately one mile to the Trail 134 Trail-head. Trail 134 will take you the remaining two miles to the falls. (2) The trailhead for Trail 109 is east of the Eagle Guard Station and leads hikers 3.5 miles to the falls.

GEOCACHING Helena is no novice when it comes to treasure hunts. In July of 1864, four miners, down on their luck, gave it one “Last Chance” and struck it rich in Helena. The region, named Last Chance Gulch, grew almost overnight, producing an estimated (in today’s dollars) $3.6 billion in gold over a 20 year period.

150 years later, Helena appeals to treasure hunters of a different kind.

HOLTER LAKE Holter Dam was completed east of Wolf Creek in 1918. Today, the Holter Lake area features a variety of recreational opportunities including fishing, boating and camping. Shore camping areas include Juniper Bay, Log Gulch and Departure Point.

FLOATING

The Helena area provides a variety of canoeing, rafting and kayaking opportunities for residents and visitors to the area. Early summer is the best time for high water with many of the area’s best rivers flowing out of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex to the north.

Mount Helena Ridge Trail Along a scenic ridge in the Helena National Forest, the Ridge Trail runs through stands of trail ends at Mount Helena City Park. » To ride the Ridge Trail Loop (15 miles), ride out of town on West Main Street (at the south end of downtown), and veer right onto Grizzly Gulch. In about five miles, turn right at the hamlet of Park City and ride a few hundred yards to the trailhead. » To cut the ride in half, leave a car at the parking lot at Mount Helena City Park and take another car up to the trailhead. Note: On Saturday mornings in the summer, the merchants of Downtown Helena sponsor the “Trolley to Trails” shuttle that takes hikers and bikers to the Park City trailhead.

More info: (406) 447-1535 Grizzly-Unionville-Orofino loop (11 miles) Ride out of town on West Main Street (at the south end of downtown), and veer right onto Grizzly Gulch. At Park City, stay left on the main road toward Unionville. In about a half-mile, turn left at the junction and continue uphill to Unionville. The road turns to pavement and heads back to town. Several other trailheads are located off the route.

Mount Helena The park offers a variety of trails for mountain bikers. The most popular trail follows the 1906 Trail around the north side of the mountain, into the saddle between the mountain’s two summits, and up onto the peak. Check the map in the kiosk in the parking lot for details.

Wakina Sky Ridge Ride out of town on West Main Street (at the south end of downtown), and veer right onto Grizzly Gulch. Turn left into the hills about two miles from downtown.

After about a half-mile ride on the dirt road, where the road makes a switchback to the left, follow the trees and open meadows. The Squaw Gulch Trail, and continue straight ahead. Climb about a mile up to the meadow, then turn around and enjoy the ride down.

Geocaching, mountain biking and a historic walking app are some of the unique assets that Helena offers to residents and guests of our city. Programing such as the Geocaching GeoTour and Bike Helena have garnered national recognition for this small capital city. And, the historic walking app has helped unite Helena’s mining history with the technology of the current era. Helena’s GeoTour Helena is no novice when it comes to treasure hunts. In July of 1864, four miners, down on their luck, gave it one “Last Chance” and struck it rich in Helena. The region, named Last Chance Gulch, grew almost overnight, producing an estimated (in today’s dollars) $3.6 billion in gold over a twenty-year period.

Just over one hundred and fifty years later, Helena’s main street is still called Last Chance Gulch, but GPS units have replaced sluice boxes. In lieu of a gold vein, caches are hidden.

Helena is booming with modern-day prospectors, geocachers.

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunt where cachers use GPS coordinates to locate hidden caches. Geocaching is a free, interactive adventure.

Helena is featured in the 2015 Rand McNally Road Atlas as the “#1 Town in the US for Geocaching.” Helena’s geocachers have created an official GeoTour. Highlighting the best of Helena, the GeoTour brings cachers to thirty-eight destinations including Two Camps Vista, where both Lewis & Clark camped along the Missouri River during different parts of their journey West.

Others bring cachers to places like the historic and charming Last Chance Gulch Walking Mall, scenic Mount Helena and the Elkhorn Ghost Town.

The stories behind these men who made their fortunes often overnight and went from rags to riches are fascinating. To read these stories, while standing directly in front of their homes will bring you eye to eye with the weathered miners turned polished millionaires of the 1800s.

The app also includes three select hikes so if you are after hiking or biking Helena’s 75 miles of singletrack trails, we will get you started with the confidence of having the trail routed out for you. The most popular of our hikes on the app is the 1906 trail to the top of iconic Mount Helena.

Bike Helena If you are a mountain biker on your way to Helena, Montana, you’re in for some epic rides. Designated an International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) Ride Center, Helena showcases 75 miles of classic singletrack. Helena’s South Hills Trail System is the result of years of planning, preserving and promoting our local trails. The efforts have been led by the Prickly Pear Land Trust and the City of Helena Parks Department.

Visit www.bikehelena.com for information on the trail system, recommended routes and bike events. Also on the web site you will find the schedule for Helena’s Trail Rider, a FREE shuttle that brings bikers and hikers to Helena’s surrounding trailheads. The shuttle runs five days a week June-August and weekends in September.

Helena has also developed the Vigilante Bike Park located at Centennial Park. The bike park is located at the northwest corner of Centennial Park.

Parking is located in the main parking area of Centennial Park, off of N. Last Chance Gulch. Restrooms are only available during the summer months when the city places porta potties in the parking area, near the softball fields. Water can be found, in the summer months, at a drinking fountain located near the dog park.

If toting your bike along for the trip is not an option, Big Sky Cyclery (located at 801 N. Last Chance Gulch, phone 406-442-4644) offers rentals. Stop by one of the bike shops that also include Great Divide Cyclery, Capital Sports & Western and The Garage to talk trails upon your arrival to town.

Free maps can be found at www. bikehelena.com, but if you prefer a traditional map, you can pick one up at the bike shop or local outdoor stores for $8.

Reeder’s Alley & The Pioneer Cabin Preserving Helena’s treasures is something that the community takes pride in. Reeder’s Alley and the Pioneer Cabin located south on Park Avenue offers you the chance to step back in time. The new Reeder’s Alley Visitor Information Center at 105 Reeder’s Alley is located in a building dating back to around the 1870s. Current hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, but information is also available in our outdoor kiosk. Free parking is available in the Reeder’s Alley Visitor Parking.

The Pioneer Cabin, also located off Park Avenue in the Reeder’s Alley neighborhood, is the oldest documented dwelling in Helena and offers a glimpse into Montana pioneer life. The cabin will be accessible 8:00 am to 5:00 pm weekdays, but if you’d prefer a tour be sure to visit from 12:30-1:30 pm.

No matter how long you stay in Helena, there’s plenty of activities to keep you busy.

But we can’t blame you if you want to take a day and get in the car to check out some fantastic Montana scenery. Fortunately, Helena is within an easy day’s drive of a number of fascinating communities and attractions, all of which will give you a taste of the Treasure State and still get you back to Helena in time for dinner.

ANACONDA -PINTLER SCENIC HIGHWAY ROUTE What: This is a 60-mile drive between Anaconda and Drummond. Along the route, pass by Philipsburg, Georgetown Lake and Granite ghost town.

To get there: The scenic route can be accessed from Interstate 90 at either Drummond or Anaconda.

AUGUSTA What: If you like a town with real Western flavor, try roaming the streets of Augusta. Visit the general store, stop in at the old-fashioned saloon, buy souvenirs in the local stores and purchase Western wildlife photos from the studio of nationally known photographer Gus Wolf. To get there: Go north on Interstate 15 to Wolf Creek, take the Highway 287 exit and cross Highway 200. Stop at the Hutterite Colony along the route to purchase fresh vegetables or chicken.

BOULDER HOT SPRINGS What: Within a half-hour’s drive from Helena is the historic Boulder Hot Springs – a unique bed and breakfast offering fully restored bedrooms in the 100-year-old grand inn. To get there: Here are four routes you can drive over the divide: » MacDonald Pass: MacDonald Pass is a paved route that provides a scenic turnout on the east slope of the 6,323-foot pass south-west of Helena. To take this route, follow U.S. Highway 12 West. » Flesher Pass and Stemple Pass: Flesher, at an elevation of 6,350 feet, is about 39 miles from Helena and paved all the way on Highway 279 to Lincoln. Stemple Pass, 28 miles from Helena, has an elevation of 6,349 feet with access on a gravel road. To

Stay on Lincoln Road to the top of the divide to get to Flesher Pass. » Mullan Pass: Mullan Pass is rich in history that includes its discovery by U.S. Army Capt. John Mullan in 1853, and a campground at the top of the divide that was the site of Montana Territory’s first Masonic meeting in July 1862. To get there, drive west on U.S. Highway 12 and turn north at the Fort Harrison sign. Once you pass the fort, cross the railroad tracks and you’ll be on Birdseye Road. Follow it to the sign for Austin and turn left onto the gravel road. After crossing the divide, the road rejoins U.S. Highway 12 at the western foot of MacDonald Pass. Fourwheel drive is recommended.
