“If there were a Mount Rushmore of jazz drummers, one of the faces on it would undoubtedly belong to Elvin Ray Jones…Jones secured his place in jazz history by his tenure with John Coltrane (1960 –1966), but the drummer also made other bold statements during his 55-year recording career. One such gem that fell between the cracks is Jones’ 1975 album On the Mountain. The title track, like most of the disc, straddles the fence between acoustic jazz and electric fusion – all triggered by Jones’ subtle-to-slamming playing. He may not have been known as a fusion drummer, but this disc – which is unlike the remainder of his catalog – proved that Jones could play any style.” — Jazzizz Elvin Jones, drums/Jan Hammer, piano, Moog synthesizer/ Gene Perla, bass

TANENBAUM Plays HENZE Royal Winter Music David Tanenbaum, guitar HENZE: Royal Winter Music
From David Tanenbaum’s notes: “…in 1983 Henze came to California for a festival devoted to his music. I stayed there for a week listening to his music and waiting for a chance to play for him. Finally on festival last day he called. We went out on the porch and I started playing for him...after the second movement he said: ‘I’m writing you a concerto.’ It was such a shock I almost started to shake. Later he wrote me a letter that contained the following: ‘It made me very happy that you are by far the best guitarist I know. It seems that you have found the key to my music and you can move about in it now as though it was on quite familiar soil. I have never heard such a skillful and musically moving performance, and such mastery.’” CD: STV 33670 (R) File Under: Classical

Joseph Martin Kraus (1756 –1792) was one of the most original composers in late 18th-century Europe. He was appointed chapelmaster at the court of Gustav III of Sweden in 1787. The works for piano comprise a fairly limited number of compositions; nonetheless, they are of the highest quality. His main piano works are two large sonatas, while the others are short pieces written over roughly ten years. His central work for piano is undoubtedly the monumental Sonata in E major, containing all the main characteristics of Kraus’s music: a predominance of dark tone-colors and minor keys employed for dramatic effect, the huge expansion of phrasing and overall discourse, and the supremacy of musical narration over form. Mario Martinoli performs on a Granziera pianoforte, after Andreas Stein, ca. 1782.

CLASSICAL Gustav HOLST The Planets Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria/Adrian Leaper, conductor HOLST: The Planets, Op. 32 • The Perfect Fool, Op. 39 (Ballet Suite)
Holst’s suite The Planets has long been one of the most popular orchestral works ever written and is familiar to even the beginning classical listener. Less familiar is the other work included on this well-filled CD. Holst composed the comic opera The Perfect Fool between 1918 and 1922. He had carried the piece around fully worked out and completed “in his head” for some considerable time before it was committed to paper. The opera is seldom performed; one is far more likely to hear a concert performance of the highly enjoyable Ballet Suite. The Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria has been in existence since 1845. Since the 1994 season, Adrian Leaper has been Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the orchestra.

Three of his best concerted works for violin and orchestra are performed here by Jan Pospichal and Florian Zwiauer, both lead violinists with the Vienna Symphony; Mr. Zwiauer is also the founder of the Franz Schubert Quartet. The Vienna Symphony is one of the world’s greatest orchestras, and Marcello Viotti is one of today’s most versatile and popular conductors, both at the opera and at concerts. Ludwig van BEETHOVEN String Trios, Op. 9 ORDER DATE JULY 22, 2005
Kandinsky String Trio (Kathrin Rabus, violin/Hartmut Rohde, viola/ Nikolai Schneider, cello) BEETHOVEN: Trio in G, Op. 9, No. 1 • Trio in D, Op. 9, No. 2 • Trio in C minor, Op. 9, No. 3 Beethoven’s early String Trios, Op. 9 (1798) are already full-fledged masterpieces which set new standards for the genre. They represent Beethoven’s final preparatory step for the composition of string quartets. The Kandinsky String Trio was founded in 1990 during a summer academy at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago. Its warm richness of tone and temperamental style of interpretation soon turned the ensemble into one of the few string trios in international demand; they conducted tours through Germany, Europe, central Asia and the U.S. The trio’s debut CD, with works by Dohnányi, Roussel and Villa-Lobos, was published by Arte Nova in 1998.

Nikolai MEDTNER Forgotten Melodies Irina Ossipova, piano MEDTNER: Forgotten Melodies: Cycles 1 & 2 for Piano, Opp. 38 & 39
A large part of the compositional output of Nikolai Medtner (1879 –1951) is dedicated to the piano, which is no coincidence, as this Russian composer of German origin was considered one of the most brilliant virtuoso pianists of his time. Both Cycles for Piano Op. 38 and Op. 39, collectively known as Forgotten Melodies, were composed between 1918 and 1920. The music is characterized by two worlds: in Medtner’s compositions, Russian folklore and Western music — here particularly Brahms and Schumann — result in a synthesis. Pianist Irina Ossipova graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 1974. Ms. Ossipova has won both the International Marguerite Long/Jacques Thibaud Competition in Paris in 1979 and the First All Union Rachmaninov Contest in Moscow in 1983. Currently she is professor at the Piano and Concertmaster Faculty at the Moscow Conservatory.

Classic historic performances of Brahms masterworks from Carl Schuricht, an acknowledged master from the Golden Age of German conductors. His unmannered performances were praised for their warmth and attention to detail. Carl Schuricht was noted for his musical intelligence and especially his ability to transmit his understanding of a work directly to the players in his orchestra.

A side-by-side comparison of the compositional styles of two great German composers, Johann Sebastian Bach and Johannes Brahms, in music for the organ. Lorenzo Ghielmi teaches at the Civica Scuola di Musica di Milano. He is also organist on the Ahrend organ (1991) of the Basilica S.Simpliciano in Milan, where he played in 1992– 93 the complete organ works of J.S. Bach. He has won prizes in several international organ competitions, given concerts throughout Europe, and made many radio and CD recordings. He combines his concert activities with a passion for musicological research, bringing out editions of music by Frescobaldi and composers from Milan as well as studies dealing with 16th-17th century organ building and with Bach interpretation. He was a founder of the well-known ensemble Il Giardino Armonico.
G.F. HANDEL Concerti Grossi, Op. 3 Combattimento Consort Amsterdam HANDEL: Concerti Grossi, Op. 3 — complete
CD: CHR SACD 72140 (T)
Founded in 1982 by violinist Jan Willem de Vriend, the Combattimento Consort Amsterdam has developed into a close-knit ensemble specializing in music from 1600 –1800. Their wish not to focus solely on the standard repertoire has resulted in many interesting programs featuring remarkable and little-known works, some of which are only available in manuscript. In this case, however, the music is well known: the earlier of Handel’s two sets of ‘concerti grossi’— music for orchestral ensemble with multiple solo instruments. It is actually a compilation of pre-existing works by Handel, assembled as ‘Op. 3’ by the unscrupulous publisher John Walsh. Originally, one of the concerti was not even by Handel, a subterfuge corrected in the second printing of the works.

OPERA “I was beguiled by Moonlight Sonata. It opens with an extended piano recital in which we hear Chopin’s ‘Heroic’ Polonaise, Liszt’s Second Hungarian Rhapsody and a fragment of the title piece. The playing is mesmerising and there are wonderful overhead shots of the pianist’s hands. No one would dare to put so much uninterrupted music in a movie today.” — Classic Record Collector Ignace Paderewski, Marie Tempest, Eric Portman Moonlight Sonata (complete 1937 film)
Ignace PADEREWSKI Moonlight Sonata DVD: BCS DVD 24 (T)
• “Seated at his piano, the Polish artist and patriot offers a noble study of a creative interpreter. With no suggestion of pose or exaggeration he addresses himself to the music of Chopin, Beethoven, Liszt and himself with overwhelming confidence and utter simplicity. He casts his spell directly, and the shifting camera never once discovers a flaw in the expression of his face and body or in the behavior of his hands. He is completely absorbed in his own playing and so is the audience.” — New York Post (1937) • “Moonlight Sonata reveals much that Paderewski’s records can’t: you can see that he keeps his fingers bent except for the pinkies, which he often holds straight. With the left hand he often strikes the lowest note first, the rest of the hand follows and then the right hand comes down. His rhythms are flexible within a strict overall tempo. Serene playing. Casts a spell.” —Stefan Zucker • 1937, B&W, 86 min.

J.S. BACH The Well-Tempered Clavier, Vol. 2
• Julia Cload was born in London and educated at the Royal College of Music, where she won a three-year scholarship to the Liszt Academy in Budapest • She has performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Mozart Players, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, working with conductors such as Sir Adrian Boult, Sir John Pritchard, and Bernard Haitink • A recent highlight of her career was playing Bach’s Goldberg Variations at the 2001 Besançon Festival • Her recording for Meridian of the Goldberg Variations won critical raves; Classic CD called it “illuminating playing” • Julia Cload is also recording the complete Haydn keyboard sonatas for Meridian • In a discussion of all recordings of the Haydn sonatas, the Piano Magazine critic wrote: “Of all the pianists considered here…the greatest ‘find’ for me, also the least known, is Julia Cload. Of all the records under discussion, these, for me, are the most haunting…the most eloquent and the most lastingly illuminating.”

• Although it is a surprisingly simple setting of Psalm 50 for two choirs, Allegri’s Miserere is perhaps the best-known work of the entire repertory of 17th-century Roman church music • Allegri’s Miserere has a haunting beauty despite its unpretentious structure, and was sung annually for years in the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican during Holy Week, being reserved for that venue • It was Mozart who “stole” the music of the Miserere and gave it to the world, by attending a service at the Vatican and memorizing the entire piece and then transcribing it note for note from memory later on • This new album joins the Allegri work with a dozen others by his contemporaries, ranging from the very famous (Palestrina, Frescobaldi) to the little-known (Orgas, Qaugliati) • The authoritative performances, in the authentic style of the period, are by the famed Choir of St. John’s College, Cambridge, under the direction of George Guest, with chamber organ accompaniment by Adrian Lucas

MANFREDINI: 6 Sonatas for 2 violins & basso continuo
Giovanni Battista Martini (1706 –1784), better known to history simply as “Padre Martini,” was an ordained priest as well as a superb musicologist and teacher whose illustrious pupils included no less than Johann Christian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. His best-known composition is the hauntingly beautiful song “Plaisir d’amour,” which has been recorded by everybody from the great opera singers to Joan Baez — but he wrote a great deal of music in larger forms, as demonstrated on this CD.
Francesco Manfredini (1684 – 1762), though not among the most famous of the Italian Baroque composers, is far from unknown. Some of his Concerti Grossi have continued in the repertoire over the centuries and been not infrequently recorded, but much of his music has been lost, including all the choral works, and what is left is seldom heard. This album seeks to redress the situation with recordings of his dazzlingly rich sonatas for two violins.

Francesco Spagnoli Rusca (1634 –1704) is among the almost totally forgotten composers of his era, despite the fact that he wrote a vast amount of music, all of which is preserved in the archives of the Como Cathedral. Though he was maestro di cappella at the cathedral from 1660, he seems never to have published his works, so this first recording is of immense historical importance for lovers of Early Music.

16 selections of Hebrew synagogue chants
Paolo Buconi is dedicated to restoring authentic traditions in Jewish music. During the later Middle Ages, the ancient synagogue music made compromises with Catholic musical styles in a gesture of conciliation. Today, Paolo Buconi and his ensemble bring this repertoire back to life, with discreet instrumental accompaniment, in a style that is respectful of historical performance practice but enjoyable to the modern listener. The singing utilizes an older pronunciation than is commonly heard today.

Most famous for writing the librettos for Verdi’s final two masterpieces, Otello and Falstaff, Arrigo Boito wrote two operas on his own: Mefistofele, which today is popular worldwide; and Nerone, which was never finished. Completed by Arturo Toscanini from sketches, it has been revived and this is the first-ever budget recording of this fascinating and powerful opera based on the life of the Emperor Nero. VERDI: Aroldo (complete opera)
There have only been a couple of recordings, ever, of this “early” Verdi opera, and certainly none at budget price! Aroldo is an 1856 rewrite of 1850’s Stiffelio, which failed not because of its music, but because of its story about the marital trials of a Protestant minister — not a popular subject in Catholic Italy. Aroldo gives the same music a new story about Medieval knights in armor — plus a whole new, extra act! Live performance, Milan, 1975.
DEBUSSY: Pelléas et Mélisande (complete opera)
This great opera — “one of the supreme seminal works of the 20th century” (Wilfred Mellers) — receives a splendid performance by one of the century’s great conductors, with three great singers in the lead roles. A budget Pelleas is a rare event indeed, and a reading of this quality besides is beyond rare – it is unique. The legendary German lieder singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in one of the great French roles is a tour de force all by himself. Live performance, 1972. AUGUST 2005

“If you like swing music, you ought to check out John Sheridan and his Dream Band…[a] spirited octet that can boast of excellent soloists, elegant arrangements, and a chemistry that could only have been cooked up in a very hip kitchen. Sheridan is a gifted pianist, arranger, and bandleader; the stylistic cohesiveness of the Dream Band has much to do with his range of talents. This band has an instantly recognizable sound that suggests jazz history is in the making.” — All About Jazz
“A member of Jim Cullum’s band since 1979 and the main arranger for the Riverwalk, Live From the Landing radio series, pianist John Sheridan has spent most of his career exploring pre-bop styles. A big fan of the swing era, when Sheridan was given the opportunity to lead this date for Arbors, he quickly put together a list of favorite songs that included a few standards and many obscurities…recommended.” — All Music Guide

DANA GILLESPIE
• After 40 years in music and over 50 albums, Dana Gillespie is well qualified to sing the blues. During a career that has combined radio, theatre and film, Gillespie’s music has evolved from folk in the ‘60s through ‘70s Bowie-esque glam-rock to the raunchy, in-your-face blues she performs today! • In the beginning of her career in the ‘60s, Gillespie sang folk tunes. In the ‘70s, she moved on to rock. By the ‘80s, she turned her attention fully to one of her first loves: the blues. In between all that recording, Gillespie stayed in the spotlight on the theater stage in shows like Jesus Christ Superstar, and in films like The Hound of the Baskervilles • Dana Gillespie has worked with Donovan, Bob Dylan, David Bowie and more

“Magic Slim & The Teardrops proudly uphold the tradition of what a Chicago blues band should sound like. Their emphasis on ensemble playing and a humongous repertoire that allegedly ranges upwards of a few hundred songs give the towering guitarist’s live performances an endearing off-the-cuff quality: you never know what obscurity he’ll pull out of his oversized hat next.” — VH1.com • Magic Slim is the greatest living proponent of the intense, electrified, Mississippi-to-Chicago blues style that spawned much of the music played by modern blues artists and rockers. It’s no wonder that Magic Slim & The Teardrops, considered by many to be “the last real Chicago blues band,” have become one of the busiest and best-loved blues bands around! • Magic Slim conjures up raw, rocking blues magic. The high priest of blues voodoo taps into an elemental force that casts an enchanting spell on any lover of roots music. This is no-frills, unapologetic, straight-no-chaser, bewitching blues for the ages • Slim’s slashing guitar lines and mountain-moving vocal power propel a back-alley excursion in true blues. It’s a joyful journey – a kind of musical sleight-of-hand – but it’s all real, it’s blues, and it’s magic!

Tuff City has spent two years researching and collecting Hitson rarities – and this CD contains many rare recordings that, in some cases, fetch upwards of $500 on eBay! • Includes a number of unreleased recordings taken directly from master tapes, including an unsweetened mix of the song Hitson is most known for, the title tune “You Are Too Much for the Human Heart” • Contains an eight-page booklet filled with Hitson’s compelling life story and a number of previously unpublished photos from various stages of his career • This music holds up today as the grade-A+ work of a singer, songwriter and guitar player who excelled in the pleading southern soul style

“Author/illustrator Virginia Lee Burton’s classic tale comes to life in this jubilant orchestral rendition. Composer and conductor Stephen Simon makes use of strings, brass, winds and percussion in the telling of the tale, but no other instrument is used as effectively as the Irish bagpipes that present Mike’s theme. Narrated by Yadu, this production faithfully follows the story of Mike Mulligan and his steam shovel, Mary Ann, as they prove their worth in the face of new technology…Burton’s story still strikes a chord despite its 1939 copyright, and Simon’s joyful orchestration is sure to win new fans.” — School Library Journal

“The Andrews Sisters were the most successful female vocal group of the first half of the 20th century in the U.S.…they boasted an exuberant, close-harmony style well-suited to cheery novelty songs, and their intricate vocal arrangements and rhythmic ability mirrored the sound of swing bands…no other female vocal group, and very few male ones, came close to their success from the late ‘30s to the early ‘50s…[and] their reign is all the more remarkable given that they swam against the current of contemporary music trends while making it seem effortless.” — All Music Guide DISC ONE Woodpecker Song • Shoo Shoo Baby • Rum And Coca Cola • Strip Polka • Beer Barrel Polka • Rhumboogie • Oh!
