WILLIAM PARKER

DOUBLE SUNRISE OVER NEPTUNE

Press Quotes “Noteworthy solos featured Lewis Barnes on trumpet, Dave Sewelson on baritone saxophone, Shiau-Shu Yu on cello, and Brahim Fribgane on oud. Joe Morris started on banjo and moved to guitar, where his interaction with violinist Jason Kao Hwang was electrifying. However, the beauty of this piece was not defined so much by the individual soloists but rather by the collective sound of the group. Credit writer and leader William Parker for bringing together this eclectic mix of musicians and constructing the musical canvas for them to create this masterpiece.” — Jazz Review

Overview An orchestral work featuring immensely gifted individual and collective voices from around the world, meshing as one. Features Hamid Drake and Gerald Cleaver on drums, a full string section, young Shayna Dulberger on bass, and renowned Indian Classical vocal master Sangeeta Bandyopadhyay (flown in from India for this auspicious occasion) singing William Parker’s lyrics on one piece. This is some serious (other)worldly teleportation music that achieves psychedelic proportions of sonic interplay. The specially commissioned world premiere of Double Sunrise Over Neptune took place in June 2007 at the opening night of Vision Festival XII. As there were technical difficulties that affected the recording, the musicians reconvened the following afternoon to perform and record the piece a second time. That entire performance is presented here, followed by the second half of the premiere performance.

“As with so many of Parker’s largeensemble works, it was the entrancing ebb and flow—and the sparkle of silence after a crescendo—that made a lasting impression.” — Village Voice ALSO AVAILABLE

THE PACK A.D.

FUNERAL MIX TAPE

Press Quotes “Tintype’s gutbucket guitar/drums blues ultimately swaggers to its own, rugged groove. The grime and aggression are offset by lonesome saloon ballads and stretches of mournful classical piano that suggest that, unlike the Stripes’ Jack White, Black isn’t joking about being down and angry.” — Toronto Star

“Take the sonic minimalism of Young Marble Giants, add Andre Ethier’s countrified lamenting and a dash of Sleater Kinney’s anger, and you’ll have a fairly accurate notion of what these Vancouver-based gals sound like.” — Chart Attack “Exceptional.” — TV Guide (HHHH) “Hit me hard with a girl who can whine. Vancouver two-piece The Pack A.D.’s first disc delivers solid blues-inspired songs from first riff to last. Becky Black has the essential rock ‘n’ roll voice: she spits, she moans, she agonizingly teeters between feelings and then pushes herself over the edge.” — NOW Toronto Selling Points • Sophomore effort on Mint Records, recorded by Jesse Gander at The Hive Studios (Pride Tiger, Tranzmittors, The Doers). • Voted Best Local Band 2007 by Nerve Magazine, Vancouver BC. • Digital promotion by Toolshed Media. • Publicity and college radio service by Pirate Promotions. • Ads with Magnet, Big Takeover, and Under the Radar.

Overview Funeral Mixtape arrives hot on the heels of The Pack A.D.’s Mint Records debut Tintype. Recorded live off the floor to analog tape at The Hive Studios, Funeral Mixtape encapsulates the intensity and warmth of The Pack A.D.’s musical relationship. This studio production captures the power of Becky Black’s vocals at their best (especially on tracks such as the New Orleans death march “Oh Be Joyful”). How can a duo generate such a massive sound? Becky Black’s vocals have been compared to Janis Joplin, and the combined duo’s live show to long established acts like The Black Keys. All comparisons aside, though, The Pack A.D. exhibits an ability to present the sound and vision of the blues in their own way: brooding, explosive, and unrestrained.

“Genuine and heartfelt, taking strength in the tiny flaws that align the album with classic blues records of yesteryear.” — All Music Guide ALSO AVAILABLE

Press Quotes “This Leeds foursome’s fuzzed-out dream-pop recalls not only JAMC, but also the willowy female vocals of C86 alumni the Shop Assistants. However, rather than revive the sexualized gore of the ‘80s movie underground—or the black-leather tropes of recent retro noise-poppers like the Raveonettes—the Manhattan Love Suicides’ self-titled debut throbs with the giddy vulnerability of the scene that the NME’s C86 compilation helped spawn.” — Pitchfork

Overview The Manhattan Love Suicides have a mission. They want to write, record, and release songs on their own accord. The DIY ethic is in their blood. press quotes “Bounce Around is rather glorious. Kaye Woodward’s songs are pretty, delicate pop numbers that, for the most part, float over chiming guitars.” — London Times “This is a gorgeous collection of pop songs, so bright and fresh you can practically see them sparkle … dizzying layers of guitars, keyboards, and even a charango, this is simply a joy to listen to … Pure, pretty pop with passion.” — The Press [HHHH1/2] “Charming, melodic, and upbeat pop that will bring sunshine to your ears.” — NZmusic.com “These songs fly on delicate wings … from ‘New Broom’s’ skiffley melodies [and] ‘Wintersweet’s’ minor key confection to the soaring ‘Big Blue Sky,’ Woodward’s voice and the assured playing are highly infectious.” — Real Groove “Catchy riff after catchy riff—Paul’s bass blasted out across the packed room and Kaye’s vocals inspired punters to dance … as catchy as any of the Bats’ singles and a real crowd pleaser.” — The Package

Selling Points • First release of a new group that includes members of The Bats, who have a huge following as part of the New Zealand/Flying Nun sound. • Minisnap have shared the stage with Salmonella Dub and Greg Malcolm, and have toured with Fur Patrol. • Print/new media mailing in-house. • College radio by Vitriol Promotion.

Overview Minisnap’s Bounce Around is the first release by members of The Bats without lead singer/songwriter Robert Scott. Kaye Woodward takes the lead with her strong yet delicate vocals, and takes a turn at songwriting. The same rhythm section is there, so the comparisons are hard not to make: a folky Velvet Underground sound, chugging along with Woodward’s vocals leading the way.

It all began, like most bands do, back in 1998 when Jón Björn Ríkarsson, Gunnlaugur Lárusson, and Hörur Stefánsson got together and started jamming some seriously heavy tunes. Selling Points • Roadsaw’s first new album in just under a decade. • Will tour the US and Europe in support of this release. • Recorded and produced by Andrew Schnieder (Cave In, Sasquatch, Scissorfight, Puny Human) and Benny Grotto (Solace, Dixie Witch, Ironweed, Dixie Witch). • Have toured with Nebula, Orange Goblin, Scissorfight, and more. • 500+ finished copies to press, specialty radio, and retail. • Online features at KNAC, StonerRock.com, Hellride Music, Sirius Radio (on the Contact High program with host Bobby Black of High Times), and many more. Overview There are scores of bands out there claiming to have the status of “legend” but few really merit the term. Boston’s Roadsaw is among that elite. Formed in the mid-’90s by Craig Riggs and Tim Catz, they raised the bar for riffloving hard rock, proving that the West Coast didn’t have a lock on what most considered “stoner rock.” After a single on Man’s Ruin, three albums, and more, they went on the dreaded “indefinite hiatus.” For the faithful, the best thing to do was to replay those classic albums and hope for a miracle. Crack open a cold one and get ready to rock the fuck out, because Roadsaw is back! After a successful US tour in 2005, an absolutely jaw-dropping cover of Led Zeppelin’s “When the Levee Breaks” on the latest Sucking the ’70s compilation, and appearances at both CMJ and SXSW, the band reconvened to record a new album. The core lineup is back, with bassist Tim Catz, Riggs on vox, guitarist Ian Ross, Dave Unger on keys, and longtime friend and fan Jeremy on drums. This is the culmination of every great riff, every memorable melody. This is the “fuck you” attitude that defines rock ‘n’ roll. This is Roadsaw.

“Whether you’re listening to it in ’02, ’07, or, by some miracle of time travel, 1977, chances are you’ll find Roadsaw’s universal brand of heavy blues rock perfectly ‘contemporary’ with that of ’70s icons like the James Gang, Ted Nugent, or hometown heroes Aerosmith.” — All Music Guide ALSO AVAILABLE

Press Quotes “Sexy and eclectic, it’s world music for the cool kids.” — SPIN “If you can imagine a band where a Cambodian beauty queen shares the stage with Rasputin, Barry White, Allen Ginsberg, Michael Hutchence, and Brian Wilson, you’d have a pretty good idea of the group Dengue Fever.” — L.A. Times “Her voice is swathed in reverb, becoming instantly mythic.” — The Wire “The culture clash inherent to this band gives its debut a dynamic flair.” — Time Out New York “Dengue Fever is at the vanguard of an emerging global pop sensibility, making familiar yet eerily unique music.” — KEXP

Overview Fronted by Cambodian pop star Ch’hom Nimol, who sings in Khmer, Los Angeles sextet Dengue Fever blends the rhythms of sixties Cambodian pop—heavily influenced by American surf, rock, and early psychedelic garage bands—with their own eclectic mix of American and international styles. Unlike the world music bands of the late eighties, Dengue Fever is more concerned with a universal groove and breaking down musical barriers than with notions of authenticity. There are echoes of Bollywood soundtracks, Ethiopian soul, American R&B, Cambodian folk, Spaghetti Western weirdness, and girl-group angst in the mix, but the resulting concoction is the band’s own. On Escape from Dragon House, the sound is denser, thicker, and richer than on the group’s 2003 self-titled debut. Escape from Dragon House is also darker, both musically and lyrically, with a fully realized style that melts all of the band’s influences into one realized voice that is pure Dengue Fever.

Nail welcomes eat your heart out to its roster! The brand new imprint from the folks behind Digital Hardcore is part label, part promoter, part booking agent, a supporter of established faces in music, and a helping hand for new and upcoming talent in the city.

Press Quotes “More thrilling torment from one Empire that will never crumble.” — NME [8/10] “So forward-thinking it suggests an afterlife composed of people not even born yet.” — Clash “If this is Empire’s golden foretaste of heaven, pray you never have to taste hell.” — Out in the City “This is a terrifying album that should find a place in your record collection. In short, it’s fantastically dark; file next to D.E.A.T.H.” — Electric Roulette

Selling Points • Brand new album from the legendary Atari Teenage Riot frontman. • Released to coincide with the Monitor Pop DVD Alec Empire/Atari Teenage Riot: Sixteen Years of Videos. • In-house mailing to press, web, and radio outlets.

Overview The energy, the political savvy, and the aggression are all still there, as are the industrial sounds, the barrage of electronic distortion, and the throbbing beats. But also thrown into the mix are a melodic quality and an awareness that the youth of today discover more about themselves and their world on the dance floor than anywhere else. Alec Empire is many things to many people: a man with an extraordinary recording history, the musical revolutionary behind avant-garde noise-punk outfit Atari Teenage Riot, an electronic music experimentalist who has made records on a Gameboy, and a consummate musician who has worked with an extraordinarily broad range of peers. He has remixed artists as diverse as blues legend R.L. Burnside, Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, Björk, Rob Zombie, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Slayer, Einstürzende Neubauten, and members of the new hip-hop generation like Company Flow and Prince Paul’s Handsome Boy Modeling School. He has toured with Rage Against the Machine, Wu-Tang Clan, Beck, Ministry, and Nine Inch Nails.

nail welcomes LATEST FLAME RECORDS to its roster! Latest Flame Records began as an indie/punk label in 2002 in Milwaukee. The label focuses mainly on Chicago and Milwaukee-based bands that inspire them, whether they’re bringing the abrasive, raucous noise party of IfIHadAHiFi; the reflective, thought-provoking style of The Gunshy; or the pure pop sheen of Testa Rosa. Press Quotes “A record that’s so refreshingly professional it’ll make you realize how truly amateurish most indie releases are. Well arranged and emotionally engaging.” — Detroit Metro Times “Part prog, part pop, part punk, part jazz-rock fusion, S&S seems to have hit the perfect mixture of instrumental prowess and accessibility.” — Amplifier Selling Points • Engineered and recorded by Larry Crane (Sleater-Kinney, Elliott Smith, Death Cab For Cutie) at Jackpot! Overview System and Station returns with its fourth full-length, A Nation of Actors, and delivers its most ambitious and most cohesive work to date. Principle songwriter and anchor of the band, RFK Heise, introduces elements of the gentle—at times plaintive—ambiance formerly reserved for the quasi side project Protest Hill, and the effort pays big. A Nation of Actors rides through poppier terrain than its predecessor, Here Is Now, yet doesn’t sacrifice the angular guitar work nor the two-ton rhythm section. System and Station formed as a three-piece in Boise in 1998. Since its inception—through moves to Madison and back to the West Coast— singer-songwriter and mainstay RFK Heise has guided the band through three full-length records, three EPs, and 18 national tours. A Nation of Actors sparkles from beginning to end.

Selling Points • A mixture of punked-out electronic music that recalls the likes of Six Finger Satellite, Glass Candy, and The Chromatics, this great post-punk album is one of the most anticipated ever in Montreal. • Duchess Says is known for its infernal live show. Currently the band has tours planned for Europe, with Canada and the US to follow in Fall 2008. • College radio service. Publicist will be hired for national and regional media coverage. overview Montreal’s Duchess Says fuses the fury and intensity of a punk rock comprised of screaming guitars, moaning bass, and relentless drumming with keyboards and the explosively sexy stylings of vocalist Annie-C. While the band may not be reinventing the wheel with their blend of electronics and post punk, there is something breathtakingly original about Duchess Says. One listen to Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs will cement that impression. Despite the lack of a full-length release, Duchess Says has become one of the poster bands of Montreal, having performed at most of the major festivals in their native Quebec as well as representing Montreal at the prestigious Montreal showcase at SXSW. During this time they also performed alongside the likes of Depeche Mode, Sonic Youth, Juan Mclean, Dinosaur Jr., and Les Georges Leningrad. Overview Author, activist, painter, and sound artist Masami Akita has been at the foreground of experimental music for over 25 years. Inspired by psychedelic rock, free jazz, early electronic composition, and physical arts—especially Kurt Schwitters’ Merzbau—Akita has created a musical language all his own. Dolphin Sonar is Merzbow’s full-length protest album against the annual brutal slaughtering of some 2,500 dolphins in Japan. This is an angry album full of beats, blasts, and broken glass. Clattering smashes are pursued by pulsing analog whirls like the heart of a dolphin being chased through the bloodied water. Overview Basement Echo is the historical meeting point of two generations of the Japanese underground. Kawabata Makoto, leader of the Acid Mothers Temple, and Michishita Shinsuke, leader of LSD March, are together for the first time in a guitar duo. Though Makoto and Shinsuke are from the same scene, the fact that they are from different generations means they bring different energy to the collaboration. This fact is extremely exciting for Makoto, who refers to Shinsuke as “one of the most promising musicians in the Japanese underground.” Both artists agree that Basement Echo was a step into the unknown, with neither knowing what the resulting sounds would be. For Shinsuke, the collaborations have been a dream come true. He describes Makoto as having a “soul of rock that never burns out.” After the recordings were complete, the two friends sat down and raised a triumphant toast. Recorded at Snowflake Sound in Sapporo in October 2007. Totally improvised with no editing/overdubbing. In 1984 Vortex Campaign invited Coil and The New Blockaders to collaborate. The result, unofficially referred to as “Dolbied,” was released on cassette in an edition of 50. The release has since gone on to become legendary, showcasing two of the most influential groups in the scene at the early stages of their development. The Melancholy Mad Tenant is an authorized release, sanctioned by all three groups. Formed in 1983, Coil’s output has ranged from the avantgarde to experimental neoclassical. Coil was mainly a studio group, but in 2000 they commenced a successful series of tours that proved to be extremely remarkable events. The New Blockaders began in 1982 with the release of the debut LP Changez Les Blockeurs, cited by many as a defining moment in the history of noise music. The group has gone on to influence a generation of artists, from Japanese noise maestro Merzbow to noise punks Wolf Eyes.
