ALLEGRO CLASSICAL WELCOMES

DELTA CLASSICS

p. 18

After many successful years with the label Capriccio, label manager Philippe Sautot presents the new Delta Classics label, focusing on a mixture of niche repertoire and popular new productions. Delta Classics comes to Allegro Classical via Codaex.

CYPRES

p. 20–21

Frontline artists, quality programs, pure sound, outstanding presentation— Cypres mixes it all together to offer you the finest and most surprising musical discoveries! Founded just over a decade ago, the Cypres catalog now contains about 100 titles in repertory that ranges from medieval to contemporary music. From Guillaume Dufay to Luc Brewaeys, from César Franck to Henri Pousseur, Belgium has produced an impressive number of superb composers! The past several years have seen the constant development of the label, as well as growing interest in its innovative, intelligent programming, justly rewarded by the international press as well as a faithful public.

OBOE CLASSICS

p. 40–41

Jeremy Polmear founded Oboe Classics in 2002 to provide a home for a wide variety of oboe music and players. The first set of eight releases in this month’s NR book is a typical cross-section of the label’s catalog, a mix of world-class artists from both sides of the Atlantic with contemporary and core repertoire. In addition, historical recordings have proved a popular inclusion. It has always been the label’s intention to add value to their physical products in order to distinguish them from digital downloads, so all CD booklets are 24 pages, with photos and extensive program notes that can’t be found on the web. Oboe Classics CDs have attracted favorable press comments in both the US and the UK. The label believes that the back cover of a CD is nearly as important as the front, and each CD back includes a relevant press comment in addition to details about the works, the performers, and the booklet. Oboe Classics is part of The Classics Labels, which come to Allegro Classical via Launch Music International.

Many musicians also undertook this arduous journey to hear their famous contemporaries’ music, and get to know their musical tastes and dialects. Viewed against this background, it is hardly surprising that the early 18th century saw the emergence of a “mixed style” in one country after another. A Cavalier’s Tour sends early music ensemble Concerto Grosso Berlin on a musical journey with period instruments, taking it beyond the Baroque strongholds of England, France, Italy, and Germany. The result is a motley round of diverse compositions, distinguished not by their differences but by their similarities, bringing the spirit of bygone Europe alive through the medium of this hitherto unknown repertoire.

The perfectly attuned German piano duo of Friederike Haufe and Volker Ahmels presents an exceptional program of rarely performed works for piano four-hands by composers of the 20th century whose lives were marked by persecution, exile, or murder.

Versatile pianist Marialena Fernandes and her duo partner Ranko Markovic´ prove that an enormous orchestral apparatus is not necessary for rendering the intentions of great symphonic works. On the contrary, the works come alive, expressing their origins and how they matured in the composers’ minds into the full orchestral versions customary today.

Avie Records Daniel-Ben Pienaar: piano BEETHOVEN: 13 Variations on a waltz by Anton Diabelli, Op. 120 • Bagatelles, Op. 126 “A completely satisfying account of this music.” — Fanfare Daniel-Ben Pienaar follows his acclaimed recording of Bach’s groundbreaking Goldberg Variations by scaling the heights of Beethoven’s monumental 33 variations on a waltz by Anton Diabelli. These late works are some of Beethoven’s most adventurous, suitably challenging for Pienaar’s technical wizardry and probing intellect. He complements the set with Beethoven’s last great work for solo piano, the Bagatelles, Op. 126, which are no mere trifles. As with his previous releases, Pienaar contributes in-depth notes that delve deep into the music’s enigmas. Combined with his sometimes provocative, always enlightening interpretations, Pienaar has once again created a highly satisfying release for the committed classical listener.

Release Date: October 9, 2012 L’Orfeo Baroque Orchestra Michi Gaigg: conductor RAMEAU: Zaïs – Orchestral Suite • Hippolyte et Aricie – Orchestral Suite In 1733, when Jean-Philippe Rameau staged his first opera at the age of 50, no one thought that the composer would come up with 20 enthusiastically acclaimed musical dramas over the next 25 years. Hippolyte et Aricie is based on Racine’s tragedy Phèdre. The dances and arias comprise expressions ranging from pressing longing to relaxed happiness, variedly orchestrated with woodwinds and strings. With specifically dark instrumentation, stomping rhythms, and rapid tempi, Rameau depicts the rage of the characters’ and underworld gods’ furies. The ballet Héorique Zaïs combines a typical pastoral subject with freemasonic ideas of the emergence of an orderly world from the chaos pictured in the overture and prologue. Award-winning conductor Michi Gaigg leads the L’Orfeo Baroque Orchestra in this stunning rendition.

Variation is one of the oldest and most popular methods of composition in music history. The native Volga German Alfred Schnittke used a different form of variation in each of the three movements of his concert for piano and chamber orchestra. A glimmer of romantic melancholy opens the piano trio, ending with a fluttering note by the violin, which fades away in the distance. In his Piano Quartet, Schnittke grapples with Gustav Mahler, whose tonal language he considered to be a “guiding principle” for his own work. One of the earliest poly-stylistic works by Schnittke, and probably the most-often performed piece of his oeuvre, is the Piano Quintet dedicated to his deceased mother. One of Europe’s most dedicated contemporary music interpreters, pianist Ewa Kupiec, is featured on this beautiful recording.

Inspired by the last moments of Richard Wagner’s life and his interrupted opera project Die Sieger, Jonathan Harvey’s Wagner Dream centers around a Buddhist revelation given to Wagner “in the blink of an eye” with the help of librettist Jean-Claude Carrière. The drama—composed of nine scenes situated alternately in Venice at Wagner’s deathbed and in India, the spot where the opera takes place in his mind—is sustained by a real-time electronic contraption that creates a link between dream and reality. In opposition to Wagner’s music’s expressive violence, Harvey focuses on translating the inherent humanity of the opera’s characters through a delicate style that appeals to the soul rather than to the senses, rejuvenating the operatic genre by proposing a new Buddhist view of the representation of emotions onstage. Harvey’s originality serves a profound spirituality and a universal thought reconciling Wagner, Buddhism, technology, operatic tradition, and the musical.

Written at a tight pace between late July and early September 1723, they underscore the composer’s obvious effort to establish original musical proposals. He continually showed musicians and listeners that he was not serving them routine “cantor’s music,” but was writing sacred music as a true Kapellmeister. In this first volume of Bach cantatas for the PHI label, the Collegium Vocale Gent interprets some of the cantatas for the first time.

The Piano Quintet Op. 89 remains little known for reasons related to its composition as much as its history. Regarded by Koechlin as one of Fauré’s finest works, it serves as a transition to the composer’s final stylistic period. The Piano Quintet No. 2, Op. 115, surprisingly less melancholy than its predecessor, is one of the composer’s last productions. In the evening of his life, Fauré demonstrated his supreme mastery and prodigious creative power, giving French chamber music one of its finest monuments.

Doulce Mémoire Denis Raisin Dadre: conductor Ensemble Kudsi Erguner Selections of Western Christian and Ottoman Turkish music from the time of the fall of Constantinople This disc tells a story of interactions between musicians of the Ottoman court and European musicians who had settled across the way, on the Galata Hill, at the time of the fall of Constantinople in 1453. The program opens on the Christian side with the motet of lamentation composed by Guillaume Dufay in 1453. The “Lamentatio sanctae matris ecclesiae Constantinopolitanae” is a dazzling testimony to the repercussions of this fall during the Occident. On the Ottoman side, the court musicians respond with an original repertoire; a synthesis of every influence present at the Sublime Porte. After times of war and conquest come times of exchange, as relations between Christian and Muslim communities became more cordial and business between the two continued.

We associate the concepts of impressionism and post-impressionism in music with the string quartets of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Debussy’s denial of classical forms had a systematic character, and in many ways coincided with the spirits of Russian composers such as Mussorgsky, whom both Debussy and Ravel rated highly. Contemporary critics note the evident similarity of Ravel’s composition not only to Debussy’s style but also to Russian music, which attracted the two since the time of Beliaev’s concerts in Paris in 1889. The “Russian footprint” left in Debussy’s and Ravel’s works by Mussorgsky and Borodin did not remain unnoticed by the musicians from this quartet, named after Alexander Borodin. Their interpretation vividly reveals genetic links with the “new French school” and the “new Russian school,” marked by freshness, originality, and the extraordinary force of their vision.

The work of the same period, “Ode,” was composed in memoriam of Sergei Koussevitzky’s wife, who died in 1942. STRAUSS: Ein Heldenleben, Op. 40 Herbert von Karajan’s Mozart, especially in a musical theater setting, generates an unforgettable sensation of an almost childlike clarity, lightness, and radiance. But the nature of the Divertimento does not require any exceptional type of work on gathering together the movements of such a diverse musical plot. The addition of intrigue and enhancement of romantic qualities of the repertoire from the classical period was always untypical of Karajan. Instead, the performances here are written in the form of a peculiar and rather motley divertimento, connected integrally by its single image themes.

Charlotte de Rothschild Fairy Songs

The harp perfectly accompanies these songs, and Danielle Perrett skillfully adapts the piano accompaniments for her instrument. The release features settings of poetry by late 19th- and 20th-century composers. R. STRAUSS: Don Quixote & Vier Letzte Lieder

Born in 1962, Matthias Kirschnereit studied at the Detmold Music Academy with Professor Kretschmar-Fischer. His work with Claudio Arrau, Bruno Leonardo Gelber, Oleg Maisenberg, and Murray Perahia also contributed to his artistic development.

Don Quixote was premiered unsuccessfully in Paris in 1900, despite (or perhaps precisely because of) its progressive aspects. This disc contrasts the work with Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder (Four Last Songs, 1948), his swan song in this genre.

J.S. BACH: Sonatas & Partitas for Solo Violin, BWV 1004–1006

Recording these works alone, François Fernandez used an experimental approach to the reading of these pieces. Fernandez’s intention is to glorify Bach more than the violin or the interpreter.

The second part of this series includes Fernandez’s interpretations of Bach’s compositions for solo violin. Almost all of the recordings were made in the peaceful atmosphere of a small church in the Belgian Ardennes.

Sergei PROKOFIEV & Alfred SCHNITTKE String Trios

Kolja Blacher: violin/Johannes Moser: cello/Walter Küssner: viola/Vassily Lobanov: piano SCHNITTKE: String Trio • PROKOFIEV: Violin Sonata No. 1, Op. 80 • Five Melodies, Op. 35a Composer Alfred Schnittke saw himself as a German, a Russian, and a Jew, a “poly-identity” that influenced his views on composition for his String Trio. His works feature collages, citation techniques, distortions, and cross-fadings of the past and present. Sergei Prokofiev’s Violin Sonata No. 1 in F minor, Op. 80 is one of the darkest and most brooding of the composer’s works. Prokofiev experimented with the techniques and tonalities of the human voice, making his instrumental treatment of it a globally recognizable, influential technique.

DAUVERGNE: La Vénetienne

This year marks the 400th anniversary of Giovanni Gabrieli’s death, and this CD presents an unusual selection of organ pieces and other works in which cornets are used, either in elaborately ornamented higher voices or in dialogue with the organ.

La Vénitienne

Antoine Dauvergne’s final operatic work follows none of the established genres of the period. Taking a libretto written during the reign of Louis XIV in 1705, he drew on the best of his talent and skill to create a synthesis of everything that was modern at that time.

On this debut release by fortepianist Natalia Valentin, the instrument used was built by an anonymous master in late 18th-century Germany. These works, representative of Beethoven’s early career, are a mix of passion and an almost juvenile grace.

Stradivarius

Patrick Bismuth’s art of the violin is a reflection of the diversity of influences that contribute to his personal style. Improvisations, folk traditions, and gypsy music are as much a part of his artistry as the Western classical canon.
