PORTL AND P: 800.288.2007

FUN FUN RECORDS pg 10 As a member of the now defunct Skankin’ Pickle, Mike Park released five full-length records, toured 14 countries, and made his mark in the independent music world. In 2006 he welcomed his first child, daughter Maggie Elizabeth, to the world. A year off from music and a second child in 2008 (Moses Young) brought much change, but Park’s newfound love for fatherhood also gave him new direction. On August 20, 2011, he released his first children’s album, Smile. After the album’s success, musician friends continually asked about releasing their own kid-friendly records, and Fun Fun Records was born with the goal of keeping DIY punk ethics intact while providing quality and educational music for kids! Spectral Voice Recordings pg 19 Spectral Voice Recordings was formed to release the disparate music of today’s forward-thinking labels, composers, and performers. Not stylistically aligned with any specific genre, Spectral Voice’s mission is to present recordings as they were envisioned by the artists who created them, and to support the diversity that defines our world today. This month, Spectral Voice presents Rest Assured, a unique New York-based imprint dedicated to taking the best elements of favorite musical traditions and turning them inside out. Formed in 2012 by composer/guitarist Rafiq Bhatia and composer/producer Alexander Overington, Rest Assured eschews genre boundaries in favor of a hyper-realistic and ornately detailed aesthetic. DENOVALI RECORDS pg 23 Denovali Records is a Germany-based independent music label founded in 2005. Not confined to a specific genre, the label supports worldwide sound researchers. The repertoire varies from improvised dark experimental sounds, ambient, drone, and electronica to dark jazz, jazz, and piano-and-string-driven modern compositions. Artwork and packaging are as essential as the music, and the combination of both results in a coherent piece of art.

With every new album from The Birthday Massacre, we see a band that has created not only its own distinct niche in the musical landscape, but also seems to have created its own world. This time, we play hide and seek in that world. The new album opens with rain and ends with the sounds of waves; in between we are given songs about lost girls, lost love, and lost time. The delicate interplay between Chibi’s vocals and the ambiance created by Rainbow, M. Falcore, Rhim, Owen, and Nate is on full display. Dark new-wave hooks and haunting synths turn sinister as Rainbow and Falcore’s guitars lead Hide and Seek into ever darker, ever more beautiful corners of The Birthday Massacre’s world.

“A velvety voice, crashing guitars, awesome bass line, haunting vocals & keys, and melodic gothic rock performed to perfection.” — MUEN MAGAZINE

When an artist has critical and commercial success, they often hide in the safety of previous formulas for their follow-up. Unsurprisingly, Caustic’s Matt Fanale is not that artist; the follow-up to the popular club stomp The Golden Vagina of Fame and Profit is a massive 18-track musical extravaganza. The Man Who Couldn’t Stop is loosely inspired by the classic, awesomely pretentious James Joyce novel Ulysses. The album is like a sonic marathon, spanning electronic genres from digital hardcore to atmospheric trip-hop. It showcases Caustic’s warped, expanding electronic range and also explores new depths, lyrically and creatively. Like Ulysses, it contains layer after layer of meanings and relationships for the listener to decipher. Grass Roots is a new collective devoted to creating music that combines soul and fresh, contemporary songwriting. Alto saxophonist Darius Jones has been sharing his voluminous gifts with the world since the release of his debut Man’ish Boy (A Raw & Beautiful Thing). Drummer Chad Taylor has contributed to the greatness of both the Chicago and New York music scenes; his long-running Chicago Underground project with cornetist Rob Mazurek has brought his greatest acclaim to date. Alex Harding is one of the few modern musicians who has mastered the baritone saxophone, and he has performed and recorded with David Murray, Aretha Franklin, Sun Ra Arkestra, and Angélique Kidjo. Bassist Sean Conly has been active in numerous New York jazz scenes since the mid-1990s, touring and recording with Andrew Hill, Regina Carterm, Paquito DeRivera, and Stefon Harris. Their sectional arrangements evince great thought and attention to detail; the performances always bring the soul of unfettered expression. The final piece on the album creates an alien landscape rich with flora and fauna, and then proceeds to explore that landscape from the perspective of a giant dragonfly.

Machinefabriek Secret Photographs

Genre: Electronica Label: Important Records CD: IPT 366 Price Code: P (SRP $16.99) Number of Discs: 1 Digipak, Box Lot 30 Street Date: 10/9/12 D

This release features beautiful new soundtrack work from Machinefabriek to accompany a film made by Mike Hoolboom using photographs taken by notorious bank robber Alvin Karpis. One of the most notorious bank robbers of the 20th century, Karpis was named Public Enemy #1 and arrested by J. Edgar Hoover in 1936. When he was released on parole in 1969, he wrote a bestselling memoir and became a photographer, but never showed his work to anyone. Hoolboom found these photos and presented them in a film, which features the still images slowly dissolving into one another. Intensifying the slow, hypnotic pace and transitions, the musical score follows the three parts of the film with dream-like sonic structures. On this album, the original score is presented in its pure, unhurried form. The music combines elements of ambient, modern classical, minimalism, drone, and field recordings. • A film inspired by musicologist, essayist, and radio producer Daniel Caux. • Features many artists who rarely appear on film, including John Cage, Pauline Oliveros, La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Meredith Monk, Gavin Bryars, and Richie Hawtin. • Directed by Jacqueline Caux.

This film was inspired by Daniel Caux, a musicologist, essayist, and radio producer who made endless discoveries in the fields of experimental, minimalist, postmodern, and techno music. After studying fine art in Paris and devoting himself to painting for several years, Caux became known as an expert in the field of new jazz, new American vanguard music, and all sorts of fringe music. His recent passing has reversed the roles, and many of the musicians that he ardently supported wished to be included in this film, including John Cage, Pauline Oliveros, La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Meredith Monk, Gavin Bryars, and Richie Hawtin. • A new film about one of the great electronic pioneers. • Directed by Anaïs Prosaïc.

Now in her eighties, Eliane Radigue is a justly celebrated figure in electronic music. Her work has roots in Europe’s post-war avant garde, and she has been linked with the pioneers of American minimalism such as Terry Riley, La Monte Young, and Steve Reich, but her monumental meditative compositions have taken a singular path, transporting the listener into new realms of sound. In June 2011 in London, the Spitalfields Summer Music Festival paid tribute to Radigue’s entire body of work, and the “Grande Dame” of long duration music was enthusiastically welcomed by a new generation of admirers young enough to be her grandchildren.

Genre: Alt Rock/Folk Label: COP International & Trisol Music Group CD: COP TRI 391 Price Code: R (SRP $17.99) Number of Discs: 1 Digipak, Box Lot 25 Street Date: 10/9/12 D

This surprising new star on the apocalyptic folk scene sprouts from the punk and singer-songwriter genres, combining these attitudes with somber, experimental folk with a strong personal imprint. Rome is about emotive songs that are both catchy and disturbed. These songs awake memories of love and death, with the reoccurring themes of despair, loss, guilt, grief, might, and war. With the cynical opening line “Once we learned to speak, we learned to fail,” the band sets a grand tone for this exquisite candy piece of six exclusive songs. The first edition of this debut mini-album has long been sold out since its release in 2006. Now, COP International and Trisol Music Group are honored and proud to finally make the release available again. • Re-release of Rome’s Nera, which has been unavailable since the first edition sold out in 2006. • Digital promotions via MySpace, Twitter, and Facebook.

Rome was founded in 2005 as the main output for songs by Jerome Reuter. It has been a long time since a debut album was so eagerly awaited, and Nera is “black” indeed. The atmosphere weighs heavy on the soul, but Rome includes warmth and affection in its cold world of steel. The main characters in this lurking language are defeated men in seedy places. The album represents a marching and counter-marching of doubtful armies luring our love away with illicit grace and icy, bitter irony. The music presents gentle phantasms of desire, reversals of sympathies, aspects of eternity, spiritual hunger, treachery, corruption, shame, and honor. Nera is the meticulous patience of rage. Get it now and make it your friend before it devours you!

Only a few months after the release of its first full-length album Nera, Rome came back to show they were here to stay. Confessions d’un voleur d’ames is a call from a world where love and despair are locked in an embrace; it is a black craving in the fangs of war and the joys of stealth in a riot of blossoms. This second album is calmer and more personal than Nera. The confessions are often dark and poetic, sometimes brutal, but most of all intimate. It has traces of all types of obscure music genres: ambient, neo-classical, dark wave, apocalyptic folk, and martial industrial. Rome couldn’t care less about genre boundaries. The tone is less militant, the main themes being treachery, sacrifice, temperance, and composure. With a distinctive slice of suicide pop fiddled into their exquisitely dark sound, Rome has established itself as one of the liveliest and most interesting experimental folk acts around. These confessions prove that the group is a force to be reckoned with. After two successful albums, Nera and Confessions d’un voleur d’ames, Rome blessed the world with its 12-track knock-out Masse Mensch Material, which holds more than one musical surprise! Rome’s particular brand of post-industrial folk, combined with new-wave songwriting and neo-classical arrangements, takes on a new and poppy twist. But these outstanding songs have too much depth to be dismissed as mere pop music. This third album has a more subtle darkness, and is one of Rome’s best works to date. A work of art of extreme sincerity, Masse Mensch Material revolves around the themes of love, faith, and endurance. Rome created a fascinating world of contradictions that each song lays out with clarity, all the cruelty and kindness intact.

This recording is the culmination of Bhatia’s experiences to date, from early days spent bootlegging hip-hop singles on cassette tapes to later years experimenting with electronics and apprenticing under jazz greats. Bhatia’s music is not a recombination of genres; rather, it’s the sound of a breadth of experiences and influences filtered through a unique perspective. It’s an entirely new beast.

One of the most in-demand pianists in jazz, David Virelles makes his Pi Recordings debut with Continuum, a collaborative effort with bassist Ben Street (Danilo Perez, Kurt Rosenwinkel), legendary drummer Andrew Cyrille (David Murray, Cecil Taylor), and Cuban folkloric percussionist/poet Román Díaz. Virelles’ compositions are inspired by Afro-Cuban religious practices; systems that include music, poetry, storytelling, dance, symbols, art, divination, and magic. He draws specifically from the rituals and myths surrounding the Abakuá, an Afro-Cuban secret society. Román Díaz helps bring that tradition to life, spinning poetry that speaks to the multi-layered fabric of Cuban culture. Virelles has become a regular performer at the Village Vanguard, and his work as a leader has garnered critical acclaim for its innovation and maturity.

“Hard to define … he made the piano misbehave: it grew argumentative and disruptive; it mumbled and receded dramatically, like smoke after a shelling. But throughout his lines retained rhythmic authority and a kind of instant-composition coherence, and very little of it came through the usual routes of jazz piano history.” — NEW YORK TIMES

On Talk Normal’s sophomore LP Sunshine, the Brooklyn duo unveils songs that sparkle with melody and dissonance. Jarring rhythms and feedback-drenched guitar tones lace Sunshine’s nine surprisingly songful tunes, creating a sound informed by their predecessors (Cocteau Twins, Velvet Underground, Laurie Anderson) yet strikingly new. Featuring Sarah Register’s flowing, nearly drony riffs and Andrya Ambro’s finely choreographed beats, the end result is a natural sonic cohesion. It may not be the sunshine you’re used to … but rays within which you’ll want to bask.

Chris Vrenna garnered a name for himself in the early days of Nine Inch Nails, and later produced and co-produced various artists (including Marilyn Manson, Rasputina, Xzibit, Lords of Acid) and provided remixes for U2 and Weezer (among others). In 2001, Vrenna composed the dark, eerie instrumental soundtrack for American McGee’s Alice. It was also in 2001 that Vrenna unveiled his tweaker project. Best described as a blend of alternative pop/rock and electronica, tweaker blends an intriguing mix of influences and atmospheres. Dark and moody, call the time eternity is an electronic fever dream ride through a late night breakdown. Machine-gun staccato percussion blends with strings and synths to create a cohesive work. Where the free jazz caravan dropped off a Sonny Sharrock-like guitar tone near a Williamsburg indie rock spot with instructions to respect the spaces around and between the notes, you will find the duo Giant Dwarf. On their Engine Studios debut, drummer Jeremy Carlstedt—a longtime protégé of master drummer Chico Hamilton—and guitarist Martin Philadelphy evoke all manner of moods: slow, epic earth/space traveling; indie rock shimmy shake; the floating of textures and waves; old school freak-punk throwdown and even some swing. Giant Dwarf is a ragged funhouse grab bag of guitar/drum sound for your listening pleasure.

Kidd Jordan returns with his unique brand of fire-blues-free-jazz. When you hear his staccato phrases circling Harrison Bankhead’s skewed bowing in the opening of the 25-minute first track “Speaking in Tongues,” you know that everybody, including the listener, is gonna get pushed around. Sandwiched between the two extended pieces that open and close the record, the Jordan/Bankhead duet “Waves of Birds” is a tightly-knit and undulating saxophone/cello flyover. On Fire 2 wraps up with the tender “Coming Down Blue” as the rapid-fire bursts make way for the mournful wailing sound of three underrecognized free jazz veterans keepin’ on down the road.

Lonely Women’s Club is a hallucination of sound that slumbers in a parallel universe located somewhere between the smoke-filled bars of 1940s film noir and 1960s post-cocktail functions. An organist lurks in the corner of this space. The performance is slow; it merely stirs. Long notes ring out, overlay, and swell into the slowest crescendo imaginable. Uncomfortable figures support themselves at the bar, submerged in a thick atmosphere of harmonic organ tones.
